2020

EDITOR’S LETTER Hi, Folks!

What a strange new decade we landed in. We have gone through and experienced a year like no other. This marked that we have been living the new normal life for a year and it has also been a year since our last published issue about ‘Humans and Nature’. We are back again with a new theme, a time machine concept that recorded a massive revolution in the year of 2020 and bringing more deeper insight to you. Just like our previous editions that are special and unique on its own, this edition is personal and very close to all of us. We have decided to have “The Human Security” as our theme. With the Covid-19 pandemic going on, the concept of human security has changed into a modern concept, and individuals are aware more than ever. Security feels like a certainty that goes beyond than just a state’s security, and take communities, environment, and individuals into a state’s concern. Thus, our team has decided to publish this issue because we found it momentous to represent this life-changing era. In this issue, all articles are arranged in a chronological monthly order which will take you back in reflecting the missing time in 2020 and give you deeper insights on the human security as a perspective in an International Relations issues. We hope through this edition, we are able to reflect back to what we have gone through, not just around us but around the world and look forward with hope towards the uncertain world we live in and keep doing our best and a kinder human being to ourselves and to others. This year is momentous for a change; to acknowledge systemic flaws and improving to whatever ideas that could emerged for a better human security. Warm Regards,

Amira Maulidine Editor-in-chief

The Australian Forest Fires in New South Wales and Victoria

Source : https://www.abc.net.au/

The year of 2020 has been a year full of human security issues. One issue that has garnered the full attention of the world is the deadly outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that began in China around the start of the year and spread into numerous other countries becoming a full-on pandemic. However, there are also many other issues around the world which have occurred throughout the year - the Australian forest fires being one of them.

4

Highlighted News The forest fires plaguing Australia started as far back as September 2019 and have been raging on until January 2020. Authorities reported that at least 27 million acres of land have been lost due to these raging fires. According to sources, such as Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), bushfires are often the result of a combination of both the weather, terrain and the vegetation, where lightning strikes usually start fires, whilst the vegetation act as fuel for the fire. Furthermore, the terrain often contributes to the spread of the fire to nearby areas. However, at times fires are also the results of human activities of accidental or even deliberate nature. Forest fires have caused the deaths of at least 25 people, with some of these casualties amongst firefighters who were on active duty in attempts to contain the raging fires. In addition to the loss of lives claimed by the fire, the disaster has also destroyed almost 2000 houses. New South Wales officials have claimed that as much as 1.588 houses within the state have been destroyed and a further 653 more damaged. Meantime, the neighboring Victoria state authorities stated that around 200 homes were destroyed. At times Australia has had a problem regarding people being homeless and the recent forest fires have unfortunately made this case worse.

Amid the Australian fires tens of thousands of Australians have become homeless due the loss of their homes. This is a considerable added burden as in the previous year the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare had just recorded a total number of 300,000 people being homeless. Unfortunately, the forest fires had also caused the area to be filled with dense smoke and ash, becoming a health hazard for the population and animals that live in affected areas. As a result many were forced to abandon their homes to seek refuge away from the environmental dangers brought about by the fires. Many victims became temporarily homeless in the process. Around late January, the fires have eventually been contained due to the efforts of involved emergency forces. In addition, torrential rain in that season had helped to extinguish more than 30 fires around Australia. In the aftermath of the fire, many began to question the possible effects those fires might have upon the climate, experienced by Australia. Perhaps, this may be a sign of things to come in the future.

We have slowly adapted to staying at home, wearing masks, and attending online classes. Even though it was weird at first, we have adapted to the new situation for more than 6 months - so congratulations to us! During those months, we cannot help but to notice emerging ethics and social culture.

DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT US SOCIALLY? The feeling of insecurity that builds inside of us when we go out to crowded places urge us to stay at home and it builds a culture of only going out when necessary. It becomes normal for us to stay at home and it does make us feel safer from the virus. But it does not ensure safety inside some households or the safety of the mental state of individuals themselves. We find ourselves from time to time being contacted by friends or contacting friends, asking their wellbeing. And surprisingly the pandemic allows us to get in touch with friends that we weren’t really close before. Calling for hours and catching up, making sure they’re okay, becomes as a personal responsibility to look out for each other. Sometimes, we can’t help but to meet our friends in person. But unlike the ‘normal days’ we can’t hug our friends anymore or practice our secret handshake. We slowly adapt to a new way of greeting and being distant because being too close physically would also make a person uncomfortable. The pandemic has also forced us to wear masks every time we go out. Wearing a mask is seen as respectful towards other people’s health. This pandemic has clearly shown us that the action we take will affect everyone around us. By wearing a mask, we are preventing the virus from infecting not only ourselves but also other people we come in contact with.

12

This pandemic shows more vividly of how humans actually have the capacity to care about each other’s well being, but sadly it seems they needed a huge-pandemic-push to realize a bit of their potential capacity.

ZOOM ETHIC AND A POSSIBLE NEW WAY OF TEACHING Keeping the camera on during online classes or meetings, is slowly seen as being polite and respective. A bad habit that we must admit as students is that we sometimes do not respond to our lectures during zoom classes. It is funny to see the power students have now, even though it is not exactly the right thing to do. It does remind us of Najwa Shihab when she ‘interviewed’ the empty seat. Can we all agree that online classes are actually really helpful for students that live far away? And it also helps us to come on time without having any obstacles such as traffic or oversleeping. But there is another side to the coin: online classes make working groups and discussions much harder. Not to mention, that it has also made new students become unfamiliar with campus life. There will not be any stories to tell their future generation of how wonderful campus life is. Looking at a wider scale, the effect of the pandemic on education is mostly felt by students from unfortunate families. Remember, we live in a vast world with individuals from diverse backgrounds and

Features Meanwhile, unfortunate students are struggling in their pursuit of education. They find creative new ways to study, some use radio, some television, some even have a small study group in their area. Has the pandemic actually widened the disparity of education or has it opened a chance for the emergence of a new system, where education is carried out in small groups in one area of a community?

The pandemic shows that even though a country looks prosperous, that does not mean all citizens have equal access to education, but through solidarity and support we can find our way out.

ZIMBABWE’S Youth & Medical Syrup Addiction By Davin Richard

Whilst the rest of the world is currently wrestling with the Covid-19 pandemic, Zimbabwe is currently fighting 2 nation-wide emergencies that will effectively kill the progress and the future of the nation for tens of years to come.

14

Source : https://www.vice.com

Source : https://www.vice.com/en/article/kzvxyw/watch-our-new-film-about-zimbabwes-codeine-cough-syrup-epidemic

Humanity, a Gift and a Curse Human beings, no matter the ethnicity and color, are renowned for being extremely resourceful with what little they often have. Albeit this effective and efficient creativity is not without danger, this makes it the original double-edged sword. What we lack in ineptitude we make up for in hypocritical wisdom. This is the root of the problem in Zimbabwe, where Zimbabweans found a curious use for an over-the-counter medicine called ‘Broncleer’ or as the locals call it ‘Bronco’. As most of humanity’s invention purposes are to fill the glass of pleasure as much as possible to the brim, the sole potency of the human mind will inescapably open additional paths that will lead into multitude levels of perversion from its original purpose. ‘Broncleer’ is no exception to this unfortunate truth. The drug was created as a way to combat mainly cough, common cold, runny nose, and airway irritation. As we have discussed before, pleasure is the ultimate goal of humanity. Medicine might not entirely be aligned with the concept of immediate pleasure. In fact, the fact that almost all people hate taking medicine until recent years leads to ‘making medicine taste good’ - a goal that Broncleer and a lot of modern medicines have achieved through the use of sugar, opiate substances and alcohol in modest amount that creates sedative effect (codeine) which equals to morphine numbing the sensory input/intoxication as well as overriding the bitter taste when taking medicine. This, of course, makes cough syrup to be more capable in handling bodily issues more than just mere cough and common cold, but also insomnia and motion sickness thanks to the added secondary ingredients.

15

A Dangerous Solution The light usage dosage makes the drowsiness barely a side-effect to consider when the reward people get for using it is the relatively quick elimination of cough and runny nose which is not very pleasurable to experience for a long period of time. Although we wish that the story would end here, the world is not all benevolent. We mentioned the genius and danger of the human mind no matter the background - and the Zimbabwean Youngsters are a prime example of this. The use of Bronco in Zimbabwe is not mainly - or mostly not at all - to combat medical issues, as a single bottle of opiated liquid in the form of Bronco syrup in Zimbabwe equates the passing of a single day without the many stresses that extreme poverty produces. In other words 100ml of Bronco is a day of pleasure no matter the condition the consumers are in, as pleasure of ignorance is pleasure nonetheless, and as an ordinary Zimbabwean the luxury of options is just not really there. Of course Bronco was not meant to be consumed daily, but what does Adcock Ingram really has to say if their customers decide to use their product especially on consumers with a level of desperation they barely ever heard of, and let alone experience?

Unfortunate Circumstances

16

Being a citizen of the Republic of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) is no walk in a park and that is no surprise for a nation with 30 years of destructive authoritarian rule by the hands of Robert Mugabe. The people of Zimbabwe are left to their own to struggle for the end of the day with no room to think about the future. A destroyed economy and non-existent human rights catering, lead common people into desperation for any measure of sufficiency and/ or obviously, pleasure. With the amount of upper government areas being disastrously handled along with corrupt government members, the value of national currency went through a series of super inflations and eventually reached a famous hyperinflation case where the government gave up on national currency and switched into foreign currency such as US Dollars and South African’s Rand to be used on daily basis. Zimbabwe last year reported around 45% overall unemployed labour force aged between 15-35, with over 75% having informal employment status. To make things even more depressing, there are dilated wage gaps between high management positions and middle/low management positions, as well as wage thefts, which are habitual with the nature of informal jobs given no real guarantee of payment. Not to mention, the gender pay gap is a prevalent issue in Zimbabwe, too, with women earning almost 20% less than male counterparts do in the same field. All of this resulted in 9 million people falling below the poverty line and 6 million of those classified as being in extreme as of 2019.

Features

Blissful Lethargy The abuse of Bronco to essentially ‘Time Skip’ a day full of longing but no meaning to fulfill is a valuable capability in a life ever so short of meaning. The sedative effect for just less than USD 3 has become the first thing most Zimbabwean adolescents spend money on. The lethargic effect Codeine-infused syrup produces becomes noticeable once the dosage taken is 4-5 times the recommended amount. This as well as the low body tolerance young teenagers usually have leads into a full-fledged high experience for hours - the reason being why the Broncleer is usually referred to as Cheap High. Main reason why young Zimbabweans do this is the lack of something to do. Entertainmentwise, the internet has been permeating quite thoroughly among the Zimbabweans. But due to costs still higher than Bronco and the slow speed, the internet attracts only a little portion of the common citizenry. Non-entertainment wise, there really is either nothing to do or they just do not have the money to do anything beneficial for the mental health of the young generation. Even education is considered to be folly, as it is just as hard to get a job with a degree, and even if they did, chances are they still are going to make pretty much the same amount of money as they currently do thanks to the well rooted pay gap induced by the upper management. Broncleer addiction results in low blood pressure, weak pulse, nausea, vomiting, and even coma. As uneducated and drunk several young Zimbabweans may be, they know that over consuming something never leads to anything good. But that does not matter to them, because as far as they are seeing the trends in their lives, the immediate pleasure is worth sacrificing a potentially brighter future they may never have. This is the woeful truth that has been going on for 5 years, that will affect the nation for generations to come unless something changes - be it from inside or outside.

In between the wakes of major world events of recent decades, one could lose track with the latest ambitious scholarly trends in International Relations, though clearly the rhetoric of an Asian Century is neither new nor revolutionary. A first delineation of the hibernating potentials across Asia predate current observations and can be traced back as far as to the 20th century Japanese economic miracle. More contemporary observations seem to confirm that the trajectory of the global world order indicates an Asiancentric shift, particularly due to the increasing role of the Southeast-Asian region and some its member states such as Indonesia as well as the economic rise of India and China. Discourses have vastly been faced with optimism, fuelled by the projections of pan-Asian political and socioeconomic prosperity, yet the Asian Century as a term and an estimation of to which extent the institutionalized international

system with its various functions, including those of legal nature, might experience changes remain vague – resulting into uncertainties, amongst others to the future of human security.

Brief History The historic and contemporary conceptualization of human security as a principle of governance and its legal foundation in International Law, meanwhile, find their beginnings in the late 20th century after the fall of the Iron Curtain: the increasing scope of global economic, political and cultural interdependencies throughout the process of globalization with all its positive and negative effects,

required a broader notion of security, thus resulting into a leap towards non-traditional security including human security with its first meaningful reference in the 1994 United Nations Human Development Report. It is important to note that this concept of non-state-centric security and human security as well as its cultural underpinnings concerning governance and legal aspects prevail until today and that such were formed within the Westerndominated Westphalian World Order of the 20th century after the fall of traditional Realpolitik security perspectives. Consequently, we should question whether the cultural underpinnings of a prospective Asian-centric 21st century Eastphalian World Order might in fact challenge and ultimately alter the current notion of human security.

Yet, intriguingly some if not all of its principles – for instance the importance of peaceful co-existence, territorial integrity, and non-interference – rather seem to mirror the current statecentric Westphalian World order with its structural concept of sovereignty. Moving our attention to the Southeast-Asian region, we quickly recognize that the rising stars of ASEAN draw their socio-political and legal scope of inspirations from the 10 principles of the 1955 Bandung Conference which laid down the foundation of the NonAlignment-Movement. Nonetheless, said 10 principles simply resemble and extend the Panchsheel principles – much in line with a speech of India’s first Prime Minister in Colombo 1954.

Furthermore, contrary to common perception and its connotation, the NonAlignment-Movement did not assume a peaceful non-interference role. Instead however various of its member states utilized the dynamic frays of the Cold War for personal gains that clearly infringe the principles of territorial integrity, peaceful co-existence and non-aggression with atrocious and dire consequences to human security. The exploitations of the polarized Cold War era amongst Non-Alignment members manifested themselves in extremely state-centric motives as we can take from the military engagements and invasions of Indonesia in West Papa and East Timor. Unfortunately, the rise of the Eastphalian World Order seems to mirror the Westphalian World Order, whilst to some degree discrepancies between doctrine and state practices draw yet an even more dystopian picture for human securities should in fact global governance and International Law change in favour for Asian-centric perspectives. That is at least, if a pan-Asian hegemonic rise remains in ignorance to its self-imposed Buddhistinspired principles.

The world could be represented as a human body. Any problem occuring in a certain part of the body spreads and affects the entire affected individual. Let us imagine there are cancer cells developing in one of our organs. That problem may seem minor at first, since it has not affected another area of our body. However, these cancer cells will evolve into severe disease if we neglect it for a long period of time. The same thing goes for our world. One issue that happens in one part of the world can affect others. Wars and pandemics are two of the examples. Overlooking what is happening around the world and refusing to get involved in the betterment of it will only make things worse. We can no longer address the human security issues as ‘yours’ or ‘theirs’, but ‘ours’. Just because we have not witnessed an issue, that does not mean it does not exist.

Not all of us are capable of being frontline healthcare workers during a pandemic or to arrest human traffickers. On the other hand, it goes without saying that being apathetic and taking no action is not the answer. In terms of contribution, we need to keep in mind that a little step is better than none. The digital era gives us plenty of ways to connect with the world. Simple things such as spreading information or awareness about an issue, signing online petitions, and donating to a charity can be considered as contributions. Another question may appear in our mind regarding the examples mentioned above. Is the internet reliable enough to be our facilitator of participation? If yes, how does it work? We cannot only rely upon people’s contribution through the internet to deal with the issues going around us, for sure. Nevertheless, online social movement can be beneficial due to its ability to rapidly approach people around the world. Let us take a look at one example: in March 2020, an Indonesian male named F. Rozieqin Fen created a petition on an online platform called ‘change.org’ regarding a political security issue and attracted 20.000 participants within a month.

24

Features The petition was opposing the detention of an innocent farmer who was implicated in causing a wildfire in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. In this case the signers of the petition use their power to fight for justice by simply sliding fingers on their device screen. Yet, their journey does not stop there. According to the latest news regarding this case, the victim was released soon after the petition was published.

Just recently it came to my attention that the Indonesian government in all its wisdom has decided to inoculate its young labour force and public servants first. Clearly, this move is disturbing, considering Indonesia’s unexploited monumental potential of merciful, state-of-the-art policymaking that has been celebrated so much that minorities and student movements gathered in the breath-taking green oasis of Jakarta to cheer and celebrate together in tears. Later police forces joined those student movements to assist them in their celebration activities. In exchange for their good services, they are now amongst the roughly 18 million government personnel to receive the Chinese-made CoronaVac vaccine first. In fact, Indonesia has been fighting a fierce battle against Covid-19 and the decision to prioritize young labour forces for vaccinations is part of its economic combat at the Corona-frontline.

Invasions of investments, bonds, funds, and mountains of debts are much in line with the archipelago’s masterplan to outrun the global economic downfall with the power of money and productivity. Yet, the efforts seem insufficient. Holding the Holy Book in one hand, Mankiw’s 10 Principles of Economics in the other one, and balancing the Pancasila on my head, I declare my crusade against Covid-19. Equipped with vaccine injections in my bag, I inoculate healthy stock brokers, CEOs, machinery and assets, banks and creditors first. I walk along Jalan Sudirman and inject the cure into strong and young men, that will make Indonesia great again. They cheer at me because I go my priorities straight with phrases I do not fully understand because I got rid of Duolingo earlier this year to make space for the Zoom app. The air is now filled with clouds and tornados of testosterone. I put on my mask, like Bane did before he punched Batman’s face. I stay on the main road, because the disabled citizens and elderlies vegetating in the slums cannot comprehend the awesomeness that just broke loose. The Riders of Rohan emerge behind me. I inject some tiny bit into my wallet. Epic soundtrack. Some explosions and I do not even look back. I feel proud. Time to treat myself with cigarettes and coffee. Tomorrow I proceed with women and children last. Maybe.

Self Help

Lets Get Familiar With Self Help!

How much are you aware to your surroundings?

By Sheila Dirga

29

How much are you aware to your surroundings? Do you know about

the awareness of mental health? Mental illness awareness is a social issue that always grows from time to time in society, and it seems like more people are concerned about mental health each day because it is a vital part of your life and impacts your thoughts, behaviors and emotions. Being healthy emotionally can promote productivity and effectiveness in activities like work, school or caregiving. Each person assuredly has a different mental condition, hence each person’s self-help requirement is different. Mental illness, especially depression, could probably be disguised behind a person’s smile, laughs, and acts. There are countless suicide cases caused by depression which shows us that mental illness is obvious and could harm someone’s life. Then, what is depression? Depression is a mental disorder that may be described as unhappy feelings and the loss of enjoyment for a long duration of time, injured self-esteem, or feelings of unworthiness. Major depression can cause a variety of symptoms; some affect your mood, and others affect your body. Symptoms may also be ongoing, or reoccur on and off over time. There are several possible causes of depression, including family history, childhood trauma, brain structure, medical conditions, and drug use. Professional help is absolutely necessary if depressional symptoms are followed by attempts of self-harm. According to studies, one in four people in the world are affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.

30

Self Help However, there is a point in which someone could succour themselves, called self-help. Self-help is more focused on organizing yourself as to avoid depression triggers, including the transformation of lifestyle and mindset growth towards something that is more meaningful and positive. These are several ways to do a self-help to yourself during depression, such as:

1

Live a healthy life and maintain tidiness Appreciate Yourself!

Consuming healthy food, getting enough sleep, daily exercise and cleanliness are important for social, medical, and psychological reasons would improve how people see you and how you present and appreciate yourself.

Setting and achieving your goals

“What kind of obtainable goals can I set that will not stress me out?”

2

Start thinking about your life purpose and what kind of goals you want for yourself. Aiming for something meaningful and having a reason to get out of bed in the morning will be your greatest tool for keeping your life motivating. Setting self-help goals should start with identifying your needs and answering important questions that you can ask yourself, such as: “What changes do I need to make in order to make my life more meaningful?” “How realistic and achievable are those goals?” “What are some immediate decisions I can make right now to further increase the chances of accomplishing my goals?”

31

3

Get mutual support

All the important elements!

Self-help does not necessarily mean going through your troubles alone. Mutual support groups, support from family members, partners, and friends are incredibly important elements.

Distract and make yourself busy But dont let it jeopardize your time to rest!

4

Try to keep yourself busy with any kind of hobbies and interests. Maybe experiment with something new that could blossom into a new passion, could be journaling or drawing. According to studies, writing a journal, drawing, and painting is a great stress reliever, it gives you an outlet so that you can express your feelings and funnel out all your negative emotions. Assuming that it keeps you busy, it helps to distract yourself.

32

Self Help

3

Connect with Friends

Humans are still social creature too

Having a healthy fellowship, may boost your happiness and reduce your stress. Improve your self-confidence and self-worth. Help you cope with traumas, such as divorce, serious illness, job loss, or the death of a loved one. Encourage yourself to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits. Self-help ‘method’ is the most efficacious to comfort someone from difficulties, especially psychological difficulties, desire to make a change and encouraging yourself to motivate yourself is the paramount key to solve psychological difficulties.

Self Help

1

Patience

A year in this different, entirely new kind of ordinary. We discovered that everything takes time. We learned that we cannot rush into things. Learn, plan, do our best in the present. And then let it sleep in.

SelfGrowth

2

Our journey through 2020 has taught us that there is actually a lot of room for growth. Learned a new skill or discovered likings for something entirely new, even pursued a long neglected goal? Throughout this year, we found that there are lots of things happening around the world even to the individual level that execute teeny tiny impactful ideas. Did you acquire some down time for yourself at home? That counts as well.

3 Love Our definition of love varies, and it varies too for everyone. We cannot really define it, but when you make sense of its meaning love can be felt and its energy echoes to everyone who understands. Both, the meaning and its opposite try to take their part in teaching us about love itself. A sense of warmth or coldness. Happiness or sadness. A fortune or a tragedy. We learn to love what we had to leave behind for every decision we made. This year we found ourselves and for the people that surround us by large to adversities.

4

Gratitude

We were held back from eating together at restaurants, parties, handshakes, etc., when in fact, we did not see this coming, and we lost. Some of the things we were able to acquire freely before. 2020 was the year of gratitude. In simpler words, 2020 made us look back to our previous times. Wishing to relieve them, wishing to go back and value the minutes, cherish the moments when we felt less grateful. Though, we were grateful for the time we were given, to create and mostly to live.

DECEMBER 2019 Marked the beginning of the HIMAHI administration 2019-2020 following an earlier inauguration in IULI’s Guest House. The following day, the open recruitment publication was posted on HIMAHI IULI’s Instagram account. Soon after, in late January, HIMAHI IULI has filled its roster of administration. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting Indonesia whilst HIMAHI IULI was working on several events they had planned out for the year. Consequently, many changes had to be made with the initial and original plans practically completely scratched and to be replaced with new ones amid the pandemic.

struggle with the Covid-19 pandemic. In collaboration with Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa IULI (BEM), a donation drive was to be set in order to provide aid to healthcare workers. Both, BEM and HIMAHI IULI decided to donate money through Yayasan Budha Tzu Chi Indonesia, an organization that distributes medical equipment to hospitals and clinics that are struggling to handle Covid-19 patients. The donation ran for the whole month of May and received positive support from all of IULI’s stakeholders. Other student organizations in IULI assisted in the promotion of this program through their social media account. A total amount of IDR 1.9 million was collected and subsequently donated to frontline healthcare workers of Covid-19 via Yayasan Budha Tzu Chi.

The Coronavirus pandemic in 2019 (Covid-19) has major consequences for people’s social life. The Indonesian government has established policies of social distancing, including the implementation of work from home (WFH) to prevent the spread of the virus. It is undeniable that society is forced to adapt to changing situations that seem extremely drastic and fast, and this has had severe impact on the mental health of many individuals. HIMAHI IULI feels compelled to provide the public with information and knowledge necessary to maintain high motivation and productivity during the pandemic season. On May 20th 2020, HIMAHI IULI decided to organize a webinar about the current pandemic situation under the title of “Staying productive during Covid-19 Pandemic”. HIMAHI IULI realizes that many workers and students are affected in such a sense as that they feel under pressure during the Covid-19 pandemic. Two speakers were invited: Dr. Andreas Kurniawan, Sp. KJ gave advices from the medical perspective and Galurayuda Kusumasubrata, who provided the audience with an outlook from the perspective of a student and intern. The event was moderated by Aurelia Vizal, IULI INR student from batch 2019. The topics and bullet points discussed by the speakers throughout this event have certainly provided us and participants with a new mindset amid the ‘new normal’ life during the pandemic.

Participants were enthusiastic during the online talk show, as the speakers received a lot of questions regarding ways to maintain good mental health and motivation during the quarantine. Most importantly, this event has successfully provided a platform for a fruitful discussion regarding the matter. The future of an International Relations students can come with a lot of variety after graduation. As a multi-disciplinary subject, International Relations alows its practitioners to disperse into varieties of industries. From journalism, activists, diplomats, to corporate jobs – the professional playground for International Relations graduates is quite unique. In August 2020, HIMAHI IULI arranged another webinar along with the theme of careers in the field of International Relations. Named “Future Unlocked”, the webinar focuses on the options that are available for international Relation graduates creating a sharing session on how to become a diplomat for the Indonesian Foreign Ministry. The speakers that were invited were Mr. Darianto Harsono from the Foreign Ministry of Indonesia for America II and one of his staff, Mr. Samuel Tambunan. 85% of the webinar attendees were university students majoring in International Relations and high school students who have an interest in joining the International Relations major. An engaging discussion with the audience enlightened participants with knowledge on, for instance, how to become a professional after graduating with an International Relations degree. Positive feedbacks were received by the speakers and participants. HIMAHI IULI also dispatched its delegates to attend the yearly event of Pertemuan Nasional Mahasiswa Hubungan Internasional se-Indonesia XXXII Universitas Muhammadiya Yogyakarta – an event that is common for International Relations students to be attended. The event was supposed to take place in Yogyakarta, however, due to the pandemic, the event was held online via a video conference platform. Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Retno Marsuadi gave a keynote speech at the opening of the event, talking about the geopolitical situation during the pandemic.

To every mask worn, paper towel hoarded, Netflix series watched, Zoom scheduled, virtual concert watched, hand sanitizer sprayed, holidays missed, and horrible news heard. Here’s to hoping and look forwad for a (more) normal and kinder year.
