We’re closer than ever to taking back control, to the things we miss and the people we love. Getting there means keeping it up, just a little longer. It means wearing our masks, washing our hands and social distancing. It means keeping up the hope and belief that better days are coming. Let’s give it one more push. Whatever it takes, for as long as it takes. For all of us; because we’re all worth pushing for.

FAST FACT Owens is nicknamed ‘The Sheriff’ because his grandfather was the sheriff of Welsh county town Carmarthen

If they are to taste success in South Africa, the Lions must nullify the Springbok scrum. Owens will be central to a front row that shoulders this enormous responsibility.

Owens has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, but his return to fitness at the end of 2020 coincided with a return to form for the national side. He is recognised as the beating heart of the Scarlets and Wales and is a key leader for the British & Irish Lions too. As the most senior hooker on the tour, Owens may have the inside lane to the starting Test jersey against the Springboks. Though he’s a versatile all-rounder, Owens is particularly renowned for his abilities in the loose facets of play. Owens is deceptively quick for a man of his size while his compact build allows him to generate substantial power in the carry. He has previously featured at No 8 for the Scarlets – a testament to his attacking prowess. At set piece, Owens is robust and can lay claim to being the best scrummaging hooker in the squad.

The Lions have won 11 of their 12 matches against the Sharks (previously known as Natal), with one draw. In 1997, the Lions beat the Sharks 42-12, with flyhalf Gregor Townsend, replacement centre Mike Catt and flank Lawrence Dallaglio scoring tries. In 2009, the Lions scored five tries – via hooker Lee Mears, scrumhalf Mike Phillips, wing Luke Fitzgerald, fullback Lee Byrne and No 8 Jamie Heaslip – in a 39-9 win. Earlier this week, winger Duhan van der Merwe and fullback Josh Adams each scored a hat-trick of tries as the Lions claimed a 54-7 victory
