GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY A STRONG PERFORMANCE FOR SOUTH AFRICA ‘A’ AGAINST THE BRITISH & IRISH LIONS WOULD BOOST JOSEPH DWEBA’S SPRINGBOK HOPES
I
t’s fitting that the next stage in Joseph Dweba’s journey to the top of South African rugby coincides
with the start of the arduous, twisting Col de Portet stage of the Tour de France. His story is a lesson in perseverance and to just keep pedalling. A prodigious talent, Dweba is a product of the Golden Lions’ junior system having represented the union at the U16 Grant Khomo Week and U18 Craven Week. The Cheetahs came knocking in 2014 and Dweba opted to switch Johannesburg for Bloemfontein. Though his stock value had doubled by the time he left the Cheetahs, his

success there was far from immediate. Dweba was 18 when he arrived in the Free State with little money and no car. Biding his time as the fifth-choice hooker at the union while completing his final year of high school, Dweba borrowed Cheetahs head coach Franco Smith’s bicycle to make the 10km trip from school to training twice a day.
15
P L AYER F E AT URE | J OS E P H DW E B A He represented Free State in the 2014 SA Rugby U19 Championship, caught the eye of the national selectors and was called up to the Junior Springboks, making six appearances in two years. Dweba breaks away for Bordeaux Bègles against Bristol in the Champions Cup
in 2020 due to a contractual dispute. Bordeaux Bègles an enticing offer and Dweba signed for the French club, an inspired decision that has led him back to South Africa to fulfil the lifelong dream of playing for the Boks. Since making his debut for Bordeaux in November 2020, Dweba has been front and centre of the French club’s run to the semi-finals of both the Top 14 and European Champions Cup.

We’re closer than ever to taking back control, to the things we miss and the people we love. Getting there means keeping it up, just a little longer. It means wearing our masks, washing our hands and social distancing. It means keeping up the hope and belief that better days are coming. Let’s give it one more push. Whatever it takes, for as long as it takes. For all of us; because we’re all worth pushing for.

VERSATILE THREAT ANTHONY WATSON WILL TEST THE SOUTH AFRICA ‘A’ DEFENCE AT CAPE TOWN STADIUM TONIGHT
A
nthony Watson is enjoying his second trip as a British & Irish Lions tourist. In 2017
he started all three Tests against New Zealand in what proved to be a historic drawn series. The fleet-footed back
showed his international pedigree from a young age, coming up through England’s ranks playing representative rugby at U16 and U18 levels. A product of the London Irish youth academy, it was only a matter of time before Watson made his mark in the professional game.
MUZI NTOMBELA/BACKPAGEPIX
Following his victory with England in the 2013 World Rugby U20 Championship – in which the men in white triumphed over South Africa in the final – Watson joined English Premiership club Bath. He made his Test debut only a year later against the All Blacks during the 2014 autumn internationals.
