A NOTE FROM THE HDFFA BOARD

T

HANK YOU for supporting the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance (HDFFA). We couldn’t do this work if it weren’t for the dedicated partners, sponsors, foundations, volunteers and community members. At HDFFA we are changing the Central Oregon food system to be stronger, more resilient and full of opportunities for farmers and eaters. In this report you’ll find information about our programs and their successes for the 2015 fiscal year.

ACCESS Seed to Supper

Cooking Matters

Seed to Supper is a volunteer led comprehensive 5-week gardening course teaching low-income novice gardeners the skills to successfully grow food on a budget for their family.

Cooking Matters is a volunteer led, 6-week food skills education cooking class that teaches low-income adults how to purchase and prepare nutritious and delicious meals on a budget of $10 for a family of four.

• Garden supplies provided to build and cultivate garden beds throughout the summer • 28 New garden beds were built in 2015 in Bend and Prineville

• Hands on learning each week and a grocery bag full of food to cook each meal at home • Classes held in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties and Warm Springs

The Food & Farm Directory is a one-stop shop reference guide for consumers and businesses to find the farmers and ranchers of Central Oregon.

Farmer Profiles

In 2015, HDFFA interviewed Central Oregon farmers and ranchers to put together profiles to be used as marketing tools for producers.

On-Farm Events

Crooked River Open Pastures (C.R.O.P) are free farm tours and pop-up farmers market throughout Crook County.

ACTION InFARMation

Taste Local Thursdays

HDFFA encouraged consumers to take photos and use the hashtags #TasteCentralOregon and #HDFFA on social media to highlight the local food that they purchased.

Teaming with Friends of Family Farmers, a farmer advocacy group, HDFFA held a series of events on different farm topics to educate community members and producers.

As as way to increase customers demand for local food, HDFFA held a Bend restaurant series. Each Thursday partner restaurants served a special featuring Central Oregon produced food products.

NEW PROGRAMS F

OOD RECOVERY, a NEW Program, supports our mission to assure all Central Oregonians have access to fresh local food. From June to September, HDFFA hosted a booth at the NW Crossing Farmers Market where consumers, farmers and backyard gardeners could donate fresh food. HDFFA also received a generous donation from the Jefferson County Wheat Growers Association which was used to purchase an extra 1,138 pounds of fresh produce directly from farmers at wholesale prices for pantries.

ROOKED RIVER OPEN PASTURES (C.R.O.P) is a farm tour and rotating farmers markets that was developed by the Crook County Small Farm Alliance in partnership with HDFFA. These FREE farm tours and family events took place throughout the summer in Crook County and rotated from farm to farm. More than 800 families and individuals were able to experience the “real farm life�.
