A letter from our Executive Director
I grew up on a cherry farm in Eastern Oregon doing what many farm kids do: pick up rocks, plant trees, move irrigation, chop firewood, plant a garden - the list goes on. As a teenager, I sold cherries on the side of the road to tourists, ladies who loved canning, grocery stores, and regulars who came to visit our family farm stand every year. I learned that people value food from local farms. I also learned the value of friendship and trust with the families who traveled two weeks of every year to pick cherries in July. With these families I shared authentic Mexican food and music and developed a strong sense of justice. I realized that it takes a community of people to grow, harvest, process, distribute, buy, and make our food. Food connects us to each other. Food nourishes our souls, food is necessary to live, and food access is the keystone to our lives. I cofounded the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance because I believe that everyone deserves access to good food from local farms, ranches and food businesses.

AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT
Supporting our farmers, ranchers, and food businesses is at the heart of our mission. We work with these superheroes to implement projects that improve their ability to provide food to Central Oregonians. We co-promote our family farmers and ranchers and food businesses through this Directory. We also provide educational workshops, networking events, training opportunities, and infrastructure grants to improve the health of our

COOKING CLASSES
Since 2014, our free Cooking Matters courses have been a resource for families throughout Central Oregon. We provide opportunities for individuals to learn how to shop, prepare, and cook healthy meals on a budget. The goal of each six-week course is to empower individuals and their families to feel comfortable in the kitchen by expanding or learning cooking skills and tips for incorporating more fresh foods into their diet. This knowledge can mean the difference between feeding a family for one night and having the resources to cook for a lifetime. We partner with our amazing home cooks, professional chefs, and nutritionists who volunteer their time and expertise to lead these hands-on courses in seven different communities throughout Central Oregon. Cooking Matters is funded entirely through grants and donations.

Our Impact: Since 2014, HDFFA has taught 36 six-week cooking courses impacting over 1,300 people in Central Oregon, thanks to more than 1,080 volunteer hours.

VEGGIERx
In 2018, we initiated the first fresh food prescription program in Central Oregon for individuals experiencing food insecurity and type II diabetes and/or heart disease, both of which can be improved through diet. The goal of VeggieRx is to increase the consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits and improve healthy eating habits, while also supporting our local farmers. We believe that healthy food choices need to be accessible and affordable to everyone. In partnership with health care providers, regional farmers, farmers markets, and NeighborImpact, VeggieRx will continue in Bend and expand to Redmond and Prineville. This program is made possible through grants from the Central Oregon Health Council, Pacific Power Foundation, and donors like you!

Get Involved! Volunteer as a VeggieRx Market Assistant during the summer or become a participant by using our onlineeligibility tool at hdffa.org/veggierx
Our Impact: In 2018, each of the 90 VeggieRx participants received $185 of fresh
vegetables and fruits at the farmers market for eight weeks. This provided $12,000 of direct income for farmers and a total impact of $20,676 on our local food economy.
HDFFA PROGRAM
GROW & GIVE
This is the only fresh food donation program of its kind in Central Oregon, and it’s operated in conjunction with local farmers markets, area farmers, gardeners, and the NeighborImpact food bank. During the summer, we host booths at regional farmers markets where YOU can buy or donate food, and gardeners and farmers can donate excess fruits and vegetables. When you donate money, HDFFA buys product at retail prices directly from the farmers at the market each week. This both supports their business and provides fresh foods to those who may lack access to it. HDFFA also coordinates Glean Team volunteers to glean (harvest or pick) excess produce from farmers’ fields every spring through fall, providing the majority of the food that we donate. We collect between 10,00015,000 pounds for NeighborImpact who distributes to their 50+ partner agencies throughout Central Oregon.

When you patronize those restaurants you help expand the impact - think of it as a food system investment! Restaurants may feature seasonal items to take advantage of local food at its peak flavor, source 3-5 ingredients regularly or on specials, or feature local farmers and ranchers at events. Keep your local food dollars close to home - next time you dine out, look for the HDFFA Partner logo and consider asking your server how the restaurant supports local food!

HIGH DESERT SEASONAL HARVEST CHART Every season, fearless farmers take on the High Desert’s seasonality challenges.
Thankfully, High Desert farmers are able to buffer these temperature swings with a variety of season extenders, from plastic row covers to greenhouses. These season extenders allow arugula to be available in April, or sweet carrots to show up on Thanksgiving tables. In 2018 HDFFA provided $8,500 to farmers for season extenders.
While most of us enjoy the bright sunny days and clear nights, these temperature variations can mean lots of plant growth during the day and damaging frost at night, which is a risk for farmers. And this can happen any time of year – even in the summer. SPRING MAR
