MEET JANE
HDFFA BOARD CHAIR
In 1968, I had my first garden and fell in love with growing fresh veggies for my young family. This passion blossomed into a one-acre garden and a 50-acre cherry orchard in Northeast Oregon, where some years we harvested 100,000 pounds of cherries. Living and farming on the land taught our family so many lessons. It gave us all a strong work ethic; my daughters worked the orchard and garden all year long, saving money for college. We also learned to be compassionate for the families who lived on the farm and worked alongside us, sometimes 12 hours a day for two weeks straight. Through our cherry orchard, I became intimately involved with local food systems, from the way food is grown, raised, harvested, processed, or packaged to how it is distributed. What I learned is that a strong local food system assures access to fresh food for every community member, whether they’re getting their food from farmers markets or food pantries. I see the value in helping Central Oregonians get fresh, healthy and locally produced food and understand the benefits of providing food skills education. I also appreciate how this supports our regional farmers, ranchers and food businesses. The mutual benefits create a full-circle food system. My story has shaped how I approach my food and my community, and it’s why I’m so passionate about the work we do at the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance. All food tells a story, and the food grown in Central Oregon tells the story of our farmers, our families and our land. Sincerely, Jane Sabin-Davis, Board Chair

OUR MISSION
is to support a community based food system in Central Oregon to increase access to fresh healthy food, support sustainable farm land use and foster relationships among farmers and consumers FOOD ACCESS PROGRAMS HDFFA improves food security in Central Oregon through programs that meet the needs expressed by you, our community. This includes: Cooking Matters food skills classes, Seed to Supper gardening classes, and Grow & Give fresh food drive and on-farm gleaning for NeighborImpact (food bank).
COOKING MATTERS Six-week nutrition-based cooking courses, empower individuals and families by teaching hands-on cooking skills to improve self-sufficiency in the kitchen, stretch food budgets and cook healthy, nutritious meals.

GROW & GIVE
This program increases the availability of fresh, locally grown food for families, food pantries and the NeighborImpact food bank. From spring through summer, HDFFA hosts booths at five regional farmers markets where consumers can buy and donate food, gardeners can bring home-grown food to donate, and farmers can donate excess fruits and vegetables. Donations are provided to NeighborImpact food bank and distributed throughout our region. This program is volunteer-driven. We depend on community members to both bring their produce to us as well as participate in collecting from farmers.

THE BENEFITS OF BUYING LOCALLY GROWN FOODS At the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance we are often asked, “Why should I buy local?” There are many reasons, including economics (more money stays in our community) and environmental (fewer miles traveled leaves a smaller carbon footprint). However, there’s one aspect that can have daily benefits for all of us: Nutrition. And while there may not be a universal rule about what “locally grown” means, we can tell you how HDFFA views it – and it’s right in our name: we consider food grown or raised in the High Desert (tri-county Central Oregon) to be local.
can lose 15 to 55% of vitamin C within a week; some spinach can lose 90% within the first 24 hours after harvest.” Not only do locally grown crops travel less distance, they are more likely grown using sustainable methods that promote healthy soil. Plants grown in healthy soil develop deeper, stronger root systems that enable them to more efficiently collect and retain nutrients, making them better for you.
A number of factors contribute to the nutrition levels of fresh fruits and vegetables: type of crop, the variety grown, growing methods, harvest methods, storing methods and more. Generally, fruits and veggies that ripened on the plant provide more nutritional value. This produce also travels less miles to get to your plate. In the U.S., the average piece of produce travels 1,500 miles. Fresh produce varieties that you may find in a conventional grocery store such as bananas, melons, apples, and tomatoes are usually chosen because they can be produced in high volume at reasonably fast rates and are durable for shipping. While fruits and vegetables from commercial grocery stores are better than no produce at all, chances are they have taken a hit in vitamin and mineral levels. The longer the wait time between harvesting and eating, the greater the loss of nutritional value. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, “University of California studies show that vegetables

If each local fruit or vegetable packs a greater nutritional punch, it stands to reason that you, the buyer, are getting more bang for your buck. This is important in a time when food insecurity is on the rise. as HdFFa works to bridge the gap between Central oregon growers and eaters, our goal is that every person can access and afford locally grown food as tool for nutritional success. LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF LABELS On average, supermarkets are filled with 42,000 different products – and what can feel like almost that many labels. Each of us has our own priorities for what we feel is important. It can be confusing to figure out what’s true and verified, or what’s unregulated or a gimmick. Understanding the basics of labels can help you decide what works best for you and fits your values. While some labels are legally defined, others are not. To help you navigate, the High Desert Food & Farm Alliance put together tips and information about some of the more common labels so you know what you’re buying.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Differentiating between the label and the actual farming practice or animal’s welfare is important. For example, chicken that is labeled “organic” does not necessarily mean that the hens were raised in a humane manner. 10
• A label is a claim – or a value statement – made on a product which may or may not be certified or verified by the government or another agency • A regulation is a rule or definition that is maintained by an authority • Certification means the product is verified to meet regulations set by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), or go beyond government standards
TIPS FOR SHOPPING SMART 3 look for a recognized symbol 3 look for a definition of the word 3 ask your farmer
LABELS Local
HDFFA defines local as the high desert (Central Oregon tri-county) region. Ask around and you’ll probably find that everyone has a different definition.
Free Roaming/Pasture Fed/ Meadow Raised These labels refer to the environments in which animals are raised and must either be connected to a certified symbol or have a definition on the product to verify the claim.
Grass-Fed/Grain-Finished/ Vegetarian Fed Labels referring to an animal’s diet clarifies what they have been fed throughout their lives, and requires that they have only eaten the diet claimed on the label.
natural This term has USDA guidelines, but no regulation, and suggests that a product does not contain artificial ingredients or colors and is only minimally processed. Individual companies can, and do, make up their own definitions for their products.
Cage-Free Chicken This is not a regulated label since conventionally grown meat birds are typically not grown in cages, but rather large open structures.
USDA REGULATED LABELS Cage-Free Eggs
Hens must be housed in a way gives them unlimited access to food and water, and freedom to roam during the laying cycle. This doesn’t mean they aren’t in cages at some point during their lives, or that they have access to the outdoors. Look for egg cartons with the US Grademark seal to verify USDA certification.
Free-Range Poultry This label is for poultry only and means that the birds must have access the outdoors. However, this may only be a “pop-hole” with no full-body access. There is no definition for non-poultry animals.
Raised without hormones Hormones are only approved for use in beef-cattle and sheep – they are not allowed with hogs or poultry
(including laying hens). If you see the claim on beef, it is valid if sufficient documentation shows no hormones have been used to raise the animal. Look for the USDA Process Verified Seal.
Raised without antibiotics Producers must provide sufficient documentation showing that no antibiotics were used in the feed, water or injections when raising the animal. Look for the USDA Process Verified Seal.
uSDa organic Farms must meet approved methods to protect natural resources and conserve biodiversity, and are only allowed to use approved substances.
CERTIFICATIONS GMo-Free
This label is verified by the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit, and is not government regulated. This label verifies that a product does not contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
organic & humane If you see these logos on your products, you know that your food has been certified and meets or exceeds USDA standards: the Oregon Tilth® logo tells you the product is organic, and the American Humane® or Processed and Certified Humane® logos ensure that animals are treated humanely in the way they are raised, fed and processed.
animal Welfare A Greener World is based in Terrebonne and is a HDFFA Sponsor. They certify that animals are raised following the highest standards. Only family farms are approved. Standards are unique to each type of animal and are very comprehensive. Sources: Consumer Reports, Greener Choices, USDA Labeling Guideline and USDA FSIS Compliance Guidance for Label Approval

CHEF’S COLLECTIVE
Chefs choose ingredients that express their creativity, at the same time responding to what consumers want to eat. Chefs also have the potential to propel demand for local food through the ingredients they choose to purchase and serve.
The High Desert Food and Farm Alliance is supporting the establishment of a Central Oregon Chef’s Collective. This resource for Central Oregon chefs is modeled after a national nonprofit designed to help local chefs support each other. At monthly meetings, chefs network, share resources, trade industry tips, identify educational opportunities, discuss co-marketing and plan events. If you’re a chef looking for resources, check out the Chef’s Collective.

HIGH DESERT SEASONAL HARVEST CHART Every season, fearless farmers take on the High Desert’s seasonality challenges. While most of us enjoy the bright sunny days and clear nights, these temperature variations can mean lots of plant growth during the day and damaging frost at night, which is a risk for farmers. And this can happen any time of year – even in the summer. Thankfully, High Desert farmers are able to buffer these SPRING MAR

WHAT IS COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA) A great way to get to know your farmer is to purchase a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). The concept is simple: you purchase a CSA or farm share directly from the producer, then enjoy your farm fresh products! What’s included in your CSA will vary and is dependent upon what type you choose.
Small ones feed two to three people and larger ones may feed a family of four or more.
Some include only vegetables, or you can mix it up and add eggs and honey or other farm products; meat and flower-only CSAs are available as well. Generally, vegetables and other products are harvested the same day as pickup. CSA shares are unique.
While the general structure is that you pay upfront for the entire season, many farmers accept payment plans or offer work-for-trade options. You can also pay with your SNAP benefits at farmer’s’ markets by using your SNAP card to purchase tokens that
