What’s On Highland Perthshire 01 Apr 2013 to 14 Sep 2013 Exhibition - 150th anniversary of the Perth to Inverness Railway Blair Castle Blair Atholl PH18 5TL In 1863, the railway between Dunkeld and Inverness was completed opening the Highlands to increased visitors and trade. Engineer Joseph Mitchell attempted to get the proposal passed for almost 20 years but struggled to get support due to the common view that it would be too difficult to build a railway line across the rocky terrain of the Highlands. The proposal was passed by parliament in 1861 and the railway line was completed only 2 years later on 9 September 1963. The 6th Duke of Atholl and 7th Duke of Atholl were heavily involved in the process, as the railway line crossed a large proportion of Atholl Estates. The 6th Duke insisted on having beautifullydesigned bridges across his land to cater for the new railway (the bridges that were built include the Bridge of Tilt, Killicrankie Viaduct and the Calvine bridge) and the 7th Duke took the first trial run on the line. To celebrate the 150th anniversary, Blair Castle has a number of artefacts on display in the Banvie Hall relating to the development of the railway, including watercolours, old photos of Blair Atholl station and a model of a Stevenson design locomotive which featured on the Antiques Road Show in 2011. section of the I&PJR was opened from Dunkeld to Pitlochry, on 3rd August 1863 the Forres-Aviemore section followed and on 9th September 1863 the Aviemore-Pitlochry section was completed, thereby forming the strategic main line across the Grampians. From these dates, the growth of many villages as tourist venues and service centres can be traced. In 1865 the I&PJR became the Highland Railway which was in existence for almost 60 years. In 1923 it became part of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), and in 1948 British Railways took over at nationalisation. Tel 01796 481232

What’s On Highland Perthshire Birnam Arts is very excited to welcome Diablito Tango, breaking off from their run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, with the enchanting and sultry voice of French Algerian Nesrine Belmokh, American Jazz Double Bassist Matt Baker and Bandeónist, Argentinian Javier Cárdenas. Diablito Tango was born as a mix of three cultures - tango, jazz and chanson and since their first appearance in 2010, they have quickly risen to critical acclaim, playing to sell-out audiences world-wide, including the USA where they received standing ovations and expanded their already wide fan-base. Their 2012 debut album was described as “addictive”. Outside Diablito Tango, the members of the trio are all musicians of the highest calibre and hold positions in the Valencia Opera Orchestra. Presenting concert tangos and milongas, (with the odd French chanson and Blues number thrown in for good measure!) Diablito Tango will transport you to the world of Tango in an intimate and electric evening of stunning, passionate music and song.
