Book Online: www.birkscinema.co.uk Book by Telephone: 01887 822845
It’s difficult to know where to start describing this month’s programme. With 42 separate Films or events we practically have something new every day! The spring into summer period is traditionally quiet for cinema but this year we have so much to catch up with. With such a large number of films they don’t screen for long – make sure you catch them while you can. It is with great pleasure that we announce the Tummel and Tay festival will return in June. The Festival is a collaboration of three cultural venues, The Birks Cinema, Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Birnam Arts. Linked by the paths of the rivers Tummel and Tay the festival aims to celebrate great cultural activities in our locality. For the Cinema that means we have the chance to expand our offering to include Comedy, Live Music, a little history and opportunities to meet local people. There’s plenty of interest to all age groups. So see you there! Amongst the film highlights this month two great Documentary’s stand out. The Mountain climbing story Meru and then the story of Scotland’s own cycling guru Graeme Obree. The Celebration of all things Shakespeare continues too. Come and See the Shakespearean Director and Actor of his generation Kenneth Branagh, beamed live from Belfast to do a Q & A ahead of a screening of Henry V. Simon Lewis General Manager The Birks Cinema

ROH Wherther
The Importance of Being Earnest
Based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of the poet Werther’s hopeless love for Charlotte, who is committed to another man.. The music is full of lyrical beauty, passion and emotional fervour, – small wonder that Werther is often considered to be the composer’s finest work.
First time at the Birks... The 2015 production saw one of Britain’s most respected actors, David Suchet play the role of the formidable Lady Bracknell. Oscar Wilde’s much loved and exhilarating masterpiece, with its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde’s most enduringly popular play.

Heartland Film & International HFS - Dheepan
Son of Saul
Sun 12 - Wed 22 Jun
Fri 27 May - Thu 2 Jun
On the losing side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier poses as the husband and father of two other refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving in France, the makeshift “family” sets about establishing a new life only to find themselves once again embroiled in violence on the mean streets of Paris. A heartrending saga of three strangers united by circumstance and struggle, Dheepan is both a tour-de-force thriller and a powerful depiction of the refugee experience.
In this searing drama, a concentration camp inmate tasked with burning the dead discovers the body of his young son, and must choose between participating in the clandestine uprising being planned among the prisoners, or securing a proper Jewish burial for his child. Grimly intense yet thoroughly rewarding, Son of Saul offers an unforgettable viewing experience. 107m Dir László Nemes Cast Géza Röhrig, Levente Molnár, Urs Rechn, Todd Charmont Hungarian with English Subtitles
115m Dir Jacques Audiard Cast Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan
Marguerite
The Daughter
Mon 23 - Thu 26 May
Mon 27 - Wed 29 Jun
1921, the beginning of the Golden Twenties. Not far from Paris. It is party day at Marguerite Dumont’s castle. Like every year, an array of music lovers gathers around a great cause at the owner’s place. Nobody knows much about this woman except that she is rich and that her whole life is devoted to her passion: music. Marguerite sings. She sings wholeheartedly, but she sings terribly out of tune.
Set in the last days of a dying logging town, Christian (Schneider) returns to his family home for his father Henry’s (Rush) wedding. Reconnecting with his childhood friend Oliver (Leslie) and Oliver’s family, wife Charlotte (Otto) and daughter Hedvig (Young), he unearths a long-buried secret. As he tries to right the wrongs of the past, his actions threaten to shatter the lives of those he left behind years before. Based on a play by Ibsen.
129m Dir Xavier Giannoli cast Catherine Frot, André Marcon, Michel Fau, Christa Théret French with English Subtitles
