Highland Perthshire - a Cyclist’s Dream

intro wording Welcome toJr Cycle Highland Perthshire This is our sixth edition of the Cycle Highland Perthshire brochure. We have seen a big change in cycling over this period. Cycling received huge coverage over the Olympics, encouraging even more people to join in. Highland Perthshire offers great off road routes YOUR BIKE IS IN TIP TOP CONDITION! ARE YOU? You have spent time and money ensuring your bike is ready for ETAPE! Is your body ready? Have you considered the benefits of massage or do you consider it a luxury that isn’t really necessary? If you have never had massage pre or post training/ competing then you have never realised your true potential! It is important to realise that massage is not only beneficial for injury recovery, it offers numerous benefits to enhance sporting performance and should play an important part in the life of any sportsman or woman! Muscles often become excessively tight and this can affect flexibility, relaxation and muscle balance. Tight muscles result from overuse, excessive stress and the accumulative wear and tear on tissue from everyday usage. This can lead to reduced circulation to the area, restricting nourishment and increasing toxicity tension, stiffness and pain. The mechanical effects of massage will loosen, stretch, spread and lengthen muscle fibres breaking down any fibrous matting and therefore increasing ti s sue move me nt, pliability, circulation and integrity.

with new routes being devloped all the time. For road cyclists there are more killer climbs here than anywhere else in Britian, read page 13. I would like to thank all those who have far more knowledge about cycling than we do, who freely share their knowledge with us in this brochure. Also all the businesses who support the fast growing activity of cycling in Highland Perthshire. The catalyst that has truly kicked off cycling in Highland Perthshire , is the Etape Caledonia closed road cycle event, this year entries closed at 5,400, selling out in 72 hours. James Rattray - Explore Scotland.Ltd PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF MASSAGE PRE AND POST RACE • Improve or normalise connective tissue and muscle integrity • Improve or maintain range of movement and flexibility of muscles • Increase in metabolic rate and excretion of metabolic waste • Reduction in muscle stiffness, pain and fatigue • Reduction in tension and stress due to reduced pain • Improved bowel function due to reduced tension in abdominal tissues • Increased circulation aiding the improvement of cellulite • Increase in postural awareness due to improved muscle balance and joint functioning • Increase in relaxation due to reduced tension In summary! If the mind becomes too tense, so too do the muscles. If the muscles become too tense, so too does the mind! We are based in the Atholl Centre, the Event Headquarters, treatments are available 6pm- 9pm on Friday; 9am-8pm Saturday; 9am-5pm Sunday For full details see Perthshire Fitness Therapy see page 5. Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Caledonia It’s hard to remember a time when the Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Caledonia didn’t exist;

Cyclists are challenged to take on Etape Caledonia’s “tougher little brother” Etape Pennines which is hailed as the toughest sportive in the UK. While debut event for 2013, Etape Mercia, is the “forgiving little sister” which encourages cyclists to enjoy the rolling Cheshire countryside with limited climbing to overcome.

when cyclists didn’t base their events calendar around it and when closed road events were a rare luxury. Now in its 7th year, the event sells out in less than two weeks, hosts over 5,000 cyclists and retains its position as the UK’s premier sportive and first closed road cycling event to be held in the UK. Now IMG Challenger World, who own and manage Etape Caledonia alongside a portfolio of running and triathlon events, have created two new events forming an Etape family which caters for all levels of cyclists. Dame Sarah Storey is on board as ambassador to the series, recognising the importance of events which offer participants world class organisation and stunning routes, on closed roads. She will be cheering each participant on and offering exclusive training advise.

8

The Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennies, due to take places on 6 October 2013, quickly established itself as one of the toughest Sportives in the UK following its debut in 2012. Hailed as “Beautiful but Brutal” by Cycling Plus magazine, the event challenges riders to 78 miles and over 2,000metres of climbing. With speedy downhill sections and breathtaking views, hard work is certainly rewarded and riders will cross the finish line with huge feelings of self accomplishment. www.etapepennines.co.uk

Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Mercia 18 August 2013 – The latest edition to the UK’s leading cycling series, Etape Mercia is a fantastic entry level sportive which offers 69 miles of safe, closed roads in the scenic West Cheshire countryside. It is sure to follow the lead of the other Etape Series events by becoming a ‘must-do’ on every cyclist’s event calendar. www.etapemercia.co.uk Free places (800 free places across two events) are available for participants willing to raise £250 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, general entry is £63. www.etapemercia.co.uk, www.etapepennines.co.uk

Highland Perthshire Road Climbs Highland Perthshire: The Cyclists The Mountain Route Playground Highland Perthshire is the ideal location for anyone wanting to ride their bike: with a multitude of challenging climbs and stunning, virtually traffic free, routes through wooded glens, alongside deep lochs and towering mountains, there really is nowhere else comparable in the UK. One of the great bonuses of cycling in Highland Perthshire is the opportunity to mix and match so many routes. The network of roads is vast, meaning you can base yourself in one area and ride a different route each day, without ever venturing too far from your base. If you are new to cycling in Highland Perthshire then check out these three great places to ride: The Climb : Dalnacardoch: Tucked out of the way in Glen Errochty, this stunning climb is one of Highland Perthshire’s best kept secrets. It is a challenging, but ultimately rewarding climb, that is made even better by recently being resurfaced with lovely smooth tarmac. Map: OS Landranger 1:50000 43 Grid ref: Start - NN729 651, finish NN728 674 Details: 2.3 miles climbing with 676ft height gain. Description: Starting at Trinafour the climb starts immediately and steeply. The first section hairpins up a newly surfaced road and as you get higher you are offered fantastic views up Glen Errochty to Beinn Vrackie and towards the Trinafour climb. The climbing starts to ease as you approach Maud Loch on your left and finally flattens just beyond the Loch, before descending towards Dalnacardoch. The route can be made into a circular by joining the old A9 (now a traffic free cycle path to Struan at the entrance of Glen Errochty.

Ben Lawers: The ascent over Ben Lawers, the tenth highest mountain in the UK, is just one of the many highlights of this classic circular route. Map: OS Landranger 1:50000 51 Grid ref: Start – NN741 470 (Fortingall) Details: 31 miles, 1693 ft of ascent Ben Lawers Climb: 4 miles Description: Starting at Fortingall head south towards Fearnan, before turning onto the A827 south west. After 11 miles, turn right onto the climb of Ben Lawers, which initially climbs through trees, but breaks out onto an Alpine style mountainside. The climb starts to level out as you approach Lochan na Lairige, but then kicks up steeply one last time to take you to the top of the dam. A long windy descent on single track road takes you into Glen Lyon. Care is required for this descent. If required you can stop for refreshments at the bike friendly café at Bridge of Balgie, before riding back via Glen Lyon. The Glen is perhaps one of the highlights of this route as it is slightly downhill and if you have a tail-wind then you are in for a treat as you ride through the historic steep-sided glen.

The Loch route Loch Tummel: Map OS Landranger 1:50000 52/ 43 Grid ref Start - NN729 Pitlochry Details 27 miles, 1115ft ascent Description The first part of this route takes you out from Pitlochry on the route of the Etape Caledonia. Head out north west on the B8019 and turn left at the Garry Bridge towards Tummel Bridge. The road climbs and descends as you head towards the classic viewpoint of Queens View. It is worth stopping here for a magnificent view of Loch Tummel and Schiehallion. Carry on to Tummel Bridge where you will turn left over the old bridge. After 2 miles and Scot Tares – Skinny Tyres Ltd a short climb turn left again along a small single track Scot is a British Cycling qualified coach road that leads you back to Pitlochry via the south in road cycling, mountain bike and track. shores of Loch Tummel. As you arrive back you can He writes a weekly column for the Tayside avoid the A9 by turning left along a cycle path at the Courier main junction, which will lead you to Pitlochry via the Pitlochry Festival Theatre

However if you want something more challenging, with plenty of technical single track, red and black sections and even hike a bike descents, then it is best to book on with a guide for the ultimate ride. Cycle Routes & Maps Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival 4th-11th May 2013 Highland Perthshire Cycling are excited to announce some new and exciting events in this year’s Festival; the Highland Perthshire Enduro, is the first and a brand new style of event for the area, this latest and exciting format for mountain bike competition kicks off the Festival on Saturday 4th May which finds participants challenging themselves over a 58km off road route around the village of Dunkeld. This exciting event is being partnered by No Fuss Events who have had great success with this style of competition in the highlands. Entries are now live for this event and can be found on No Fuss Event’s website (http://nofussevents.co.uk/).

O t h e r new events are, guided road and mountain bike rides and a Film Night where amateur cyclists and film makers are being asked to submit a homemade cycling film which will be shown in the newly refurbished Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy, this Film Night will also show a professional feature cycling film and prizes will be given for the most voted amateur film. The week also features family fun days, kids events, local rides and the well renowned BIG Day plus lost more! The week all culminates in the legendary Etape Caledonia Sportive on Sunday 12th May.

Aberfeldy Cycling Centre Opened just last year, the cycling centre started out as an idea which grew, and then grew a bit more, until it became a fantasy centre that would not only support cyclists of all disciplines, but also pander to coffee fiends, cake lovers and kit junkies! Idea to reality was a tough journey, and some sacrifices had to be made (not the coffee or the cake!). The centre that emerged, whilst smaller than hoped, has become a hub of activity where cyclists can come and chill, chat to other cyclists and wash (possibly fix) their bike. The centre provides a place where cyclists, local or visiting, can come to plan their routes,

24

get advice and maps, and learn about the many other fantastic bike shops, workshops, trainers, and bike hirers in Highland Perthshire. The Centre’s fleet of hire bikes is growing, and has shapes and sizes for all including mountain bikes, hybrids, road bikes, kids bikes, and trailers and babyseats. A drop at the top service is available, as are guided rides. It also has it’s own workshop that does basic servicing, and maintenance classes; whilst the small shop sells all your basic cycling essentials. The stock isn’t extensive (we said the shop was small!) but you can order in parts and accessories. One of the mechanics has a liking for recycling old bikes into new things, so there is always something a bit different in the shop for the cyclist who has everything! The centre is open everyday 9am to 8pm during the summer, and shorter hours in the winter. 01887 829802 They don’t have a website yet, but find them on facebook www.facebook.com/ AberfeldyCyclingCentre

Cycle Highland Perthshire difficulty for each section of a trail. They also use symbols to show boggy areas, gates, bike shops, cafes and all manner of things useful to those of you who like to get out and about in the great outdoors. The series of Highland Perthshire Trailmaps were first produced in 2007 and updated in 2012. Steve has personally cycled all of the tracks shown on the maps and written route descriptions of varying degrees of difficulty for each map. The series of five Highland Perthshire maps covers wide area either side of the glen from Birnam in the Trailmaps south, to Blair Atholl and Bruar in the north. Maps Trailmaps are produced by Steve Smirthwaite from are printed in colour on waterproof paper and are Nairn. His Scottish maps cover some of the most available for sale at www.trailmaps.biz or local cycle popular cycling and walking areas in the Highlands, shops and tourist offices. including Royal Deeside, Aviemore and Highland Perthshire. Steve, an orienteering enthusiast, began making the maps because it was difficult to find suitable offroad biking routes on other maps. With one of Steve’s Trailmaps you no longer have to worry if a track is okay to cycle along or if some obstacle will halt the ride before you make it to the other end. Steve made his first Trailmap ten years ago showing the forest tracks around Aviemore and Glenmore. The maps show a code for the level of riding
