New cycle highland perthshire 2015

Highland Perthshire

This is the 8th edition of Cycle Highland Perthshire.

The first edition was a year after the start of Etape Caledonia, Britain’s largest closed road cycle event, back in 2007. We perceived that having this event in Highland Perthshire, would bring huge benefits to the area in the long term. The editorials in this publication have been compiled with the help of the cycle businesses in Highland Perthshire, the idea is to give you a window in to what they are offering. Cycling is very much part of what the area has to offer, this publication owes its existance to the many businesses from hotels to shops, restaurants and activity providers that take a promotion within its pages. We ask you to please support these businesses, they do recognise the benefit of the many thousands of cyclists coming to the area, each year. Best wishes for a good cycle in Highland perthshire in 2015.From the CycleHighlandPerthshire Team.

Pitlochry Pitlochry, the principle town in Highland Perthshire.

Pitlochry came to prominence 150 years ago as a result of the railway and Queen’s Victoria’s doctor who recommended Pitlochry for its fresh air and health properties. It is located in a beautiful spot just off the main A9 to Inverness and Loch Ness. The main train and bus providers frequently stop in the town. It has many accommodation providers catering for all requirements, from hostels, caravan campsites to the very best hotels . Pitlochry is the start and finish of Britain’s largest closed road event, Etape Caledonia. The start of many training rides, and those who just come to cycle the Etape Caledonia course. Not to mention the off road cyclists. Pitlochry is home to a large dedicated cycle business that rivals any you will find in the big cities. Escape Route, has a team of five dedicated cyclists who know the area intimately, a superb bike workshop that can provide a bike service for the simplest of bikes to full rebuild jobs. See page13, 14 and the back page for full details.-

Why bother with a Bike Fitting? Custom Bike Fitting. You have invested in a good quality bike. May be you have a custom built bike, does that guarantee a perfect fit? After all, if the frame is built to your specific dimensions, it has to fit like a glove, right? Well, er, no, not quite. Custom Bike Fitting is all about optimising your position on a bike, optimising your position for best power and comfort. Just stop and ask yourself how many hours will or do you spend on your bike, you might think it is set right for you, but do you actually know for sure? Escape Route team in Pitlochry have invested in a “Wattbike” which has been developed in association with British Cycling and used by World and Olympic Champions. It is the first factory calibrated indoor bike to deliver accurate, consistent performance data and technical feedback. It is suitable for everyone from school children to Olympic Gold Medallists. The Wattbike allows you to link your performance directly to a computer, providing you with an extraordinary range of monitoring that was previously only available to the world’s top cyclists. Let me ask that question again, how many hours do you plan to spend in that saddle? Surely it makes sense to make sure your bike is set right for you, with no guesses, but with certainty.

The Wattbike Expert Software will help you to get the most out of every turn of the pedals. Within seconds you can be accurately measuring your power output, your pedalling technique and heart rate.

For a Custom Bike Fitting book a slot at Escape Route in Pitlochry, by giving Kevin Grant and his team a call on 01796 473859. Escape Route is open 7 days a week all year round, at 3 Atholl Road, Pitlochry. PH16 5BX Their new web site: www. Escape-Route.co.uk focuses on what they offer in the business. Rannoch Rannoch and Tummel. A very special area within Highland Perthshire, overlooked by Schiehallion, “ Mountain of the Fairies” made famous by Maskaline, who used the mountain to caculate the mass of the earth. The lochs of Tummel and Rannoch are a significant part of the landscape and the unique Caledonian pine forest of the Black Wood of Rannoch adds something very special and unique. The road around Loch Rannoch offers an excellent road cycling route. It is flat, relatively traffic free, as one couple who cycled it during the summer said, “We only saw four cars all day, it was wonderful with all the views across the loch, peaceful and that special feeling of being outdoors, in clean frsh air, full of scents, sounds and smells of the countryside.”
