FALLS OF ACHARN: This walk has some really good views of Loch Tay and the falls themselves are special. Consists of two water falls, the upper and lower falls, a Hermits Cave (may be a Victorian folly) and a viewing platform. Particularly spectacular when the burn is in spate. Park in the village of Acharn, just near the signpost “Falls of Acharn, Circular Walk”, it is about 1 mile in length, straight up steepish climb and back down to the village.
CROFT MORAIG ‘Mary’s croft’, is a stone circle comprised of 8 standing stones in an oval setting at about 7m diameter followed by a second circle of 12 standing stones about 12m in diameter. Excavations in 1965 found pottery of local Neolithic origin dating to 300BC. Access is through the gate into the field. Explanation plaques tell you the whole story. Located in a farm field on the left of the road on the A827 from Aberfeldy to Kenmore.

WHAT IS A CRANNOG? Perthshire is home to more than 40 ancient loch-dwellings, or crannogs, found across Scotland and Ireland and dating from the early Iron Age some 2,500 years ago. Highland Perthshire has more than 18 crannogs in Loch Tay alone, built to take advantage of good lowland farmland and access to trading networks via the River Tay. Who owned these enigmatic homes? Underwater archaeological evidence shows that Tayside’s loch-dwellers were sophisticated farmers and traders who lived on the loch in peace for several generations. Whether crannogs were built as status symbols or defensive homesteads or both, the answers lie underwater and in the islands which have grown up around their ancient remains. The Scottish Crannog Centre gives you a unique opportunity to go back in time and see for your self how they lived.

THE BIRKS OF ABERFELDY inspired Robert Burns to write his poem of the same name after a visit in August 1787. The circular 1.5 mile path (allow 1.5 to 2hrs) follows the path alongside the Moness Burn. What you see today is the product of the past, not the recent past but of millions of years. Waterfalls are a feature of these hanging valleys where side streams drop down steep slopes. From the centre of Aberfeldy, take the A826 road to Crief for 200yds, the Birks of Aberfeldy is on your right. Excellent leaflet and map available in the car park. ABERFELDY WALKS LEAFLET. This is an excellent leaflet with good maps for each of the eight walks highlighted. There are two Aberfeldy walks, including the famous ‘Birks of Aberfeldy’, a Weem Walk up the Rock of Weem with a good view, Camserney takes you up to old Shielings, there are four walks in and around Kenmore. This excellent leaflet can be purchased from the Tourist Information Centre in Aberfeldy.
THE VILLAGE OF FORTINGALL, was built 1890-91. The thatched cottages are examples of a planned village built in vernacular style (combining both Lowland Scottish & English influences). Recognised as one of the best examples of ‘arts & crafts’ vernacular style in Scotland. The parish church is on an early Christian site, dedicated to Coeddi, bishop of Iona (died 712), probably founded from Iona itself as a daughter monastery. GLEN LYON, ‘was also known as “An Crom Ghleann”, (the bent glen), is the longest enclosed glen in Scotland and runs for 34 miles from Loch Lyon in the west to the village of Fortingall in the east. There is a popular drive through the glen starting at Fortingall, through to Bridge of Balgie (12miles) and back over the side of Ben Lawers to Loch Tay.

CLIMB TO THE CENTRE OF SCOTLAND. Schiehallion, at 1083 metres, is often said to lie at the centre of Scotland. A popular Munro to “bag”, with an abundance of nature to discover on the way to the summit, with the most stunning views of Rannoch and Tummel. It also played its part in history when Maskelyne used it in an experiment to help calculate the mass of the Earth back in 1774. But for those who just enjoy myths and stories, it is more fondly known as the Fairy Mountain.
THE CLACHAN. In times past, ordinary clansmen would live in thick stone walled cottages known as black houses, often consisting of a single room sometimes with a window. The hearth was in the centre of the floor, the peat smoke escaping through holes in the turf & heather covered roof. At Allean Forest (700 metres beyond Queens View), you can see one of these cottages. Car park, toilets and way marked trails. “ Forestry Commission Scotland”. THE SOLDIERS OF KILLIECRANKIE Last Saturday and Sunday each July, 11am to 5pm 30th and 31st July 2016. Meet Bonnie Dundee’s Cavalry, see Government and Jacobite troops in action, visit the living history camp and watch musket balls being made.

Go on a Battlefield Tour, see where the government troops lined up and learn which Jacobite Highland Clan regiment stood opposite them. Kids activities. Watch traditional craft industries produce their wears, the BIG tent has activities running throughout the day.
