CLIMB TO THE CENTRE OF SCOTLAND. Schiehallion, at 1083 metres, is often said to lie at the centre of Scotland. A popular Munro to “bag”, with an abundance of nature to discover on the way to the summit, with the most stunning views of Rannoch and Tummel. It also played its part in history when Maskelyne used it in an experiment to help calculate the mass of the Earth back in 1774. THE FALLS OF BRUAR. Long have the Falls drawn visitors - travellers, poets, artists, nobility and royalty - to view the wild grandeur of the Falls and their surroundings. In 1787, Robert Burns wrote a poem pleading with the Duke of Atholl to plant its banks with trees. Only after Burns’ death in 1796 did the Duke plant 60,000 larch and Scots pines. In 1844, the mature trees enchanted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their visit. The well marked route is just over one mile long. OPEN all year. North of Pitlochry on B8079. THE ATHOLL GATHERING hosted by the Duke of Atholl, the games chieftain, takes place on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May every year. It incorporates many of the time honoured traditions of a Highland Gathering, when clan members feats of strength and endurance where tested. The Atholl Highlanders march on the games field around 1pm. It is the first and one of the best highland games of the year. An excellent embankment gives a grand view of the arena.
