Soldiers of Killiecrankie

Our Big Tent Performers 1. Killiecrankie ‘Battle Card’s’ - Dylan Gibson is the inspiration behind last year’s Killiecrankie Battle ‘Battle Card’s’ based on key characters in the Battle of Killiecrankie. He has updated the cards for 2018 and added another character, which Outlander fans will find intriguing. Dylan has also hidden the cards throughout this years event field, the challenge is to find them all. Dylan will give a short talk on the Saturday along with a tour and draw in the Living Histroy Camp. Dylan offers everyone a chance to create their own character. Dylan is an illustrator by profession and lives in Pitlochry. 2. Sword Dance - We are honoured to have Atholl Highlander Colin Scrimgeour, a member of the Duke of Atholl private army, to demonstrate the Sword Dance for us. The earliest reference in the 1440s, recognised as the sword dance as a war dance with some ceremonial sense in the Scottish Royal court during that period. It was a test of skill and agility, and believed that if the dancer could complete the dance without touching the swords, it was a good omen that they would be victorious in the coming battle. However to touch or displace the swords was a bad omen and was indicative of losses or even defeat.

involved in telling the story of the Battle of Killiecrankie. No prior knowledge required, turn up and join in. The whole family will find it really enjoyable to watch too. “The National Trust for Scotland’s interactive, family friendly talk is fun for all and why not visit their stall too. Nearby Killiecrankie Visitor Centre is home to exhibits on the history and nature of Killiecrankie and it’s a short walk to Soldier’s Leap where a government soldier escaped by jumping across the River Garry.” 4. Badenoch Waulking Group - Waulking cloth is rare in Scotland today, mostly confined to the Outer Hebrides where it is carried out as a celebration of heritage. The last true waulking (for the purpose of making cloth) is believed to have occurred during the 1950s.

We are lucky to have the Badenoch Waulking Group, winners of the Royal National Mod competition on a number of occasions. The group is made up of women from Kingussie, Newtonmore and Laggan an hour north of Killiecrankie. They meet most weeks and also perform at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, at various events in Kingussie and have released a CD of their songs.

5. Battle of Killiecrankie and the issues surrounding the A9 passing through the battlefield by Rulzion Rattray 3. Family interactive Battle of Killiecrankie story Rulzion is an avid highland with the National Trust of Scotland – This is a and Scots history enthugreat way for children up to 12 years or so to being siast, having learnt Gaelic on Skye when he come to the UK in the late 1960s and has been absorbed by the Gaelic account of the Battle of Killiecrankie, often over looked by historians. His six times Great Grandfather was one of the Jacobite Cavalry that day. You will find his talks fascinating and enlighten-

The Highland Bagpipes by Stuart Letford. Stuart is the editor for the Piping Times and lives in Dunkeld. We are very lucky to have Stuart on our committee, his piping knowledge is second to none. Stuart will explain the role of the bagpipes at the battle of Killiecrankie, he will explain the music played over three hundred years ago. Stuart also plays at the memorial ceremony at the end of the weekend. 7. Aberfeldy and Distric Gaelic Choir- Have been

a great supporters of Killiecrankie and are central to the memorial ceremony the last event on the Sunday each year. The choir has been making music since 1967, promoting the Gaelic language and culture in the heart of Scotland for nearly half a century. The choir has had many competitive successes both at

Provincial Mods and the Royal National Mod. Ceud Mile Fàilte! 8. ‘Evolution of Cavalry’ by Andy Dewar McCabe retired Sandhurst Cavalry Instructor who now lives at Kinloch Rannoch and runs the Rannoch Equestrian Centre. (Andy on the left) 9.
