Saturday 1st July to Thursday 12th October People By Alan Bennett Pitlochry Festival Theatre With a bath on the billiard table and a garden resembling a jungle, aristocrat (and former model) Dorothy Stacpoole faces a desperate situation. The decaying family pile is close to ruin. And with the coffers all but empty, Dorothy must now choose between auctioning off the historic contents - or handing everything over to the National Trust. Archdeacon June, her sister, is all for the Trust. But Dorothy loathes the idea of opening her home to the public: people spoil things, don’t they, trampling over history, gawking at family memories? The thought of flogging off the art and the heirlooms is equally unbearable. And there’s a third option, too: a shady, über-rich consortium is interested in buying the house and relocating it from Yorkshire to somewhere altogether more desirable. Like Dorset. Whilst pondering which way to jump, Dorothy unexpectedly encounters a familiar face from her modelling days. Theodore, now a producer of “adult” films, is in search of the perfect period setting - and four poster bed - for his latest porn epic. Please note that this play contains occasional strong language, partial nudity and some sexual content. To book, Tel: 01796 484 626 or go online: www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com.

What’s On Highland Perthshire What’s On Highland Perthshire Thursday 20th July to Saturday 14th October The Ruling Class By Peter Barnes Pitlochry Festival Theatre

The aristocracy: backbone of Britain, pillar of Church and State, the living embodiment of tradition. And purveyors of certain eccentricities. Some stranger than others... When the 13th Earl of Gurney dies in somewhat embarrassing circumstances, the title is inherited by his son, Jack – to the horror of the rest of the family. Why? Well, Jack’s particular eccentricity is a little more extreme than most: he’s a paranoid schizophrenic who thinks he’s the Father, Son and Holy Ghost... Returning home from a clinic to assume the title and to preach an alarmingly subversive brand of peace, love and understanding - Jack is spectacularly unsuited to life in elite society. Appalled, the scheming Gurneys close ranks and deliver an ultimatum to Jack’s psychiatrist, Dr. Herder: Jack must either be cured completely of his delusion – or quietly declared insane and committed to an asylum. But Herder’s attempts to shock Jack into normality are far from orthodox... and whilst the treatment may appear outwardly successful, deep within Jack’s psyche, something dark and deadly is released... One of the landmark plays of the 1960s, Peter Barnes’s classic cult comedy, influenced by everything from music hall to Ealing comedy, is a theatrical tour de force, combining feverish energy, ferocious humour, razor-sharp satire and genuine horror. The 1972 film earned Peter O’Toole an Oscar nomination, whilst James McAvoy starred in the acclaimed 2015 London revival. Do not miss this! Please note that this play contains occasional strong language and some adult content. To book, call Box Office on 01796 484 626 or go online: www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

Thursday 24th August to Friday 13th October Europe By David Greig Pitlochry Festival Theatre

On the platform of a provincial railway station, in a border town somewhere in Europe, two refugees arrive: Sava and his daughter, Katia. They’ve been travelling forever. All they want to do is rest and find a place to begin again. But it won’t be here. Tensions rise, threaten to explode. And at night, out in the forest, the wolves gather... So who will live and who will die? Who will find love when it is least expected? And who will manage to escape..? This startlingly contemporary work by Scotland’s greatest living playwright is a fierce and compassionate drama about shifting borders, changing identities and globalisation. Please note that this play contains frequent strong language. To book, call Box Office on 01796 484 626 or go online: www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

Richard, our Farm Guides and our Shetland Pony Fergus, (who will carry refreshments) will take you on a walk over the hill at Errichel Farm, visiting sites of interest, from the place of a farm steading dating back to the middle ages, to sites of prehistoric round huts and evidence of ancient rigged cultivation. Richard will bring these areas to life, describing how people would have lived and worked the land over the millennia. The walk is approximately 4 km with some steep sections over uneven ground. Good walking boot/shoes essential. Tea/Coffee and cake will be served at the top of the hill. Who is this suitable for? Adults and families with children over 8 years* old. out ancient-style hand ploughs. All day time events include museum exhibits, talks around a log-fire in the Crannog roundhouse, demonstrations and hands-on experience of ancient crafts and technologies. Lughnasa also marks the period when the grains are ripening but not harvested yet. Throughout the Celtic world, the ripening of the grain was cause for great celebration. The reaping, threshing and preparation of breads formed great ritual and ceremony to ensure bounty for the following year. Today modern celebrations include fetes and country fairs, singing, dancing, and feasting in community gatherings. Accordingly, our last artefact for this month is a 2,500 year old foot plough discovered under the house floor during the underwater excavation of Oakbank Crannog in Loch Tay, along with grains of barley, spelt and emmer wheat. The digging end of the plough may have originally been covered with an iron point, or it may have been a ceremonial deposit. There are at least two other crannogs in Scotland where a similar type of object was discovered under floor timbers. Too many for coincidence? Join us for a great day out for all.
