1st October to 14th October Hard Times By Charles Dickens Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Port na Craig, Pitlochry PH16 5DR

Hard Times By Charles Dickens (adapted for the stage by Stephen Jeffreys). Lancashire, the 1840s: when her father, a circus performer, mysteriously disappears, young Sissy Jupe is offered a place at Mr. Gradgrind’s school – and a job in Gradgrind’s household as a servant. Torn between two worlds, Sissy decides to leave the circus behind and start a new life. But in Gradgrind’s school - and home - there is no place for imagination or play. Gradgrind worships only reason and logic. And Sissy and Gradgrind’s children, Louisa and Tom, are raised to distrust “fancy” and believe only in cold, hard fact . . .When she reaches adulthood, Louisa catches the eye of bombastic mill owner and self-made man, Josiah Bounderby. Gradgrind sees many advantages to an alliance with a man of such wealth and influence. And much to Sissy’s disgust, the beautiful but passionless Louisa agrees to the match. Tom, however, is jealous of his sister’s apparent good fortune and longs for a similar life of wealth and ease. So when a wave of unrest sweeps the town, Tom seizes an opportunity to line his pockets – and ensure that someone far less fortunate than he takes the blame . . . A thrilling, moving and ultimately uplifting story of betrayal, sacrifice and redemption, Dickens’ great novel of the triumph of the imagination over the brutality of the new industrial age is brought vividly to life in Stephen Jeffreys’ magnificent adaptation. All tickets (From £15.00) can be purchased from PFT’s Box Office on 01796 484626 or online: www.PitlochryFestivalTheatre.com

Thursday 20th October 7.30pm Tales of Don Roberto With Jamie Jauncey Birnam Arts & Conference Centre Station Road Birnam Dunkeld PH8 0DS

£10/£8/£5 U16s Writer Jamie Jauncey grew up with stories from the extraordinary life of his flamboyant great-grand-uncle, RB Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936) - famously known as Don Roberto – but who really was ‘Don Roberto’, and what was it like to have such a figure as part of the family backdrop? Jamie’s fascinating talk will uncover the many aspects of Graham’s life… he was a landed aristocrat – with a claim to the Scottish throne, no less – the UK’s first ever socialist MP and founding president of the SNP, a prolific author, an inveterate adventurer, a superb horseman – hence the sobriquet Don Roberto, an eternal champion of the underdog and oppressed, he was held to ransom by a sheik, jailed as an MP for rioting on Blood Sunday in 1887… the list goes on and on! But, above all, his story is one

of someone who stood tall for humanity in all his endeavours. Jamie has kindly donated his time for this talk towards Birnam Arts’ fundraising efforts. Tel: box office 01350 727674 www.birnamarts.com
