ON THE FLY BY JENNY KING

Even with a new name, the Three River Fly Fishing Festival remains an irresistible challenge for novices and serious anglers alike – April 28 through 30 in the streams around Highlands.

W

hat previously was known as the Three River Fly Fishing Tournament has been renamed. Due to its growth and popularity, it’s now known as Three River Fly Fishing Festival. It truly is just that. It’s not just about who catches the most fish, it’s a celebration of the rivers and streams that surround us, and the people who are intent upon keeping our land pristine. Since the beginning there have been organizations that have taken this competition seriously. Charter sponsors are Benjamin F. Edwards, & Co., The Highlander, Highland Hiker, Mountain Fresh Grocery, and Old Edwards Inn and Spa. It’s thanks to these, as well as others, that the Three River Fly Fishing Festival is able to continue raising monies for the Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund. This year’s festival runs from Thursday, April 28, through Saturday, April 30. On Thursday, April 28, there will a casting clinic held at Harris Lake in downtown Highlands for both novice and experienced anglers. The fishing competition will be held on Friday and Saturday and is open to teams of two with registration at any of the Highland Hiker stores in Highlands or Cashiers. Each team may choose to fish either with or without guides but must stay within the tournament map’s boundaries, which include the Chattooga, the Cullasaja, and Nantahala Rivers. Teams are encouraged to fish a native stream, a delayed harvest stream, and a hatchery-supported stream. Other festival activities include an opening night reception at The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts, closing night dinner at Cyprus International Cuisine and happy hour on Friday at The Ugly Dog Public House. Committee member Hilary Wilkes says, “It’s meant to be a fun weekend. We don’t give cash prizes but have lots of great awards donated by sponsors and vendors. The Highlands Rotary Golf Tournament, set for Monday, May 2, at Highlands Country Club, is a marvelous challenge for serious golfers and casual duffers.

You’ll also get to meet the new K-9 member of the Highlands Police Department. The Donald Ross-designed course was once the showcase for golf legend Bobby Jones. At the end of an exciting day, you can savor the spotlight during the Awards Ceremony, get bargains with both silent and live auctions, and enjoy a tasty cocktail buffet at 5:30 P.M. Throughout the years, the tournament has raised more than $100,000 to support the

For those of you who like to learn while “on the road,” the Center for Life Enrichment is offering several travel programs in 2016, one of which allows a group of travelers to experience the authentic character, traditions, and vast cultural heritage of Mexico that often intersects in the form of cuisine. This expedition, “Chocolate & Orchids” takes place November 12-20, and examines the ancient and modern Mexican culture in Mexico City, Puebla, and especially Oaxaca, as well as the influence of climate, elevation, flora, and fauna on agriculture, art, architecture, and ways of life. The history and uses of chocolate figures prominently in Mexico as well as orchids and their

pollinators. We will look at the botany behind the food and drinks that we love such as the agave and tequila connection. Leading this journey of the senses is Dr. James Costa, Executive Director of the Highlands Biological Station and professor of Biology at Western Carolina University. This trip promises to be a oneof-a-kind travel experience and popular program, so you are encouraged to book now as space is limited. The Center for Life Enrichment is a continuing education, non-profit organization and offers an eclectic array of lectures, workshops, and educational adventure trips and meets the needs of active adults. Wildflower Whimsy is a celebration of the little jewels that are popping out all over the Highlands Plateau and Cashiers Valley.

E

ach spring a remarkable event occurs in the deciduous woodlands of the Highlands Plateau and Cashiers Valley, the emergence of the spring wildflowers. As the first warm rays of sunlight touch the forest floor, thousands of plants awaken from their winter slumber to present an unmatched seasonal exhibit of beauty. They decorate the forest floor with a riot of color and fragrance advertising their beauty to pollinators and humans alike. Nowhere else in the natural world is this display so lavish as in the southern Appalachians. Known as ephemerals, due to their short season of productive growth, many of these plants will disappear back into dormancy, not to be seen again until next year’s spring emergence. Don’t miss your opportunity to witness this fleeting display of beauty. To mark the occasion, the Highlands Biological Foundation will host Wildflower Whimsy on May 6 and 7 at the Highlands Biological Station. This two-day event is a celebration of spring ephemerals and will feature wildflower walks, a native plant auction, a reception with a cocktail buffet, and special guest

speaker Alan Weakley, Director and Curator of the UNC Herbarium at UNC Chapel Hill. On Friday, May 6, join us for guided tours of the Highlands Botanical Garden, a repository of over 450 species of native pants. At 5:30 P.M. Dr. Alan Weakley will present “Plant Genealogy: the Origins of our Southern Blue Ridge Flora” at the Highlands Nature Center. Then stay for a native plant auction and a lively reception. On Saturday, May 7 you will have the opportunity to participate in one of four special guided wildflower pilgrimages. All proceeds from Wildflower Whimsy benefit the Highlands Biological Foundation, whose mission is to foster research and education focused on the rich natural heritage of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Tickets include a lecture, plant auctions, live music, and wine reception on Friday, and a guided wildflower walk on Saturday. The registration fee is $75 for members of the Highlands Biological Foundation and $100 for nonmembers. The Cullasaja Gorge Cleanup, set for April 23, isn’t a chore – it’s an opportunity to revel in a gorgeous slice of beauty among friends and neighbors.

pril, the month when spring announces its intention to stay by providing us with more daylight hours, more sunshine, budding trees, and gorgeous flowers, is also the time when we all kick into our spring cleaning mode. Mother Nature is sprucing things up so it seems only natural that we would start freshening up too. Highlanders take their spring cleaning seriously. You’ll see shop keepers polishing windows and planting flower boxes; and, on Saturday, April 23, you’ll see volunteers in bright orange vests picking up litter on one of our most scenic byways, the Gorge Road between Highlands and Franklin.

This community undertaking, sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, bears no resemblance to the usual grumbling, grimacing, “got to get this spring cleaning done” frame of mind, but instead brings smiling faces of all ages out for a day of community service. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors and join in the fun while giving back to our beautiful community. Starting at 9:30 A.M. volunteers meet at The Highlands Visitors Center where they’ll be provided with all the tools of the trade needed for this adventure – vests, gloves, litter pick up tools, and garbage bags. Volunteers will then be assigned a section

of road to work on and a day of sprucing up our mountain will begin. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Working side by side, laughing all the while, volunteers soon have our roadside sparkling. Reward for your hard work awaits when you gather after the cleanup at nearby Cliffside Lake for a hamburger and hotdog cookout. What better way to end a morning of hard work than to relax by a cool mountain lake? Don’t miss this opportunity to join this cleanup effort and help keep our mountains beautiful. 300 CYCLISTS, 10,000 FEET BY MARY JANE MCCALL

Serious and not-so-serious bikers can test their endurance and enjoy the wild local scenery at the 24th Annual Tour de Cashiers, May 14.

R

egister now for the 24th annual Tour de Cashiers, slated for May 14, by visiting tourdecashiers.com. Coordinated by the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce and assisted by Pisgah Productions of Asheville, Jackson County Law Enforcement and numerous local volunteers, this annual event boasts entrants from across the Southeast and as far away as Idaho. May is the perfect time to enjoy the spring splendor and this event’s scenic route counts some of the area’s best views as part of its appeal. This mountainous route travels through Jackson, Macon, and Transylvania counties and features 10,000 feet of elevation change, challenging ascents, and thrilling descents, sure to thrill

even the most seasoned athletes. Last year approximately 300 cyclists ranging in age from 18 (the minimum entrance age) to 72 participated in one of the three routes available. For the weekend athlete eager to enjoy a spring day there is the Quarter Century, 25 mile ride, just right for hitting those weekly goals. More challenging still is the Metric, a 62mile ride. For those serious athletes ready to assault the mountain and test their mettle, there’s the Century, a 100-mile route. Regardless of which route riders choose, they’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery and an exhilarating ride. This year Pisgah Productions of Asheville will be lending operational support to the event by providing additional

on course surveillance, expanded rest stops, en route mechanical assistance, and expanded Support and Gear activities. Countless other individuals provide their time and energy to make this event safe and successful. Route guidance and emergency medical services will be provided by regional fire departments, rescue squads, and other law enforcement agencies. Local community sponsors provide financial underwriting for The Tour and all receive recognition in all event publicity. CASHIERS LIBRARY: COMMUNITY RESOURCE BY LUKE OSTEEN

Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library maintains its vitality, even in this glorious spring season.

ou may believe that with lengthening days and gorgeous weather, people would be inclined to spend less time inside Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library. Sure, people need books about gardening or hiking guides, but how on earth can the library attract patrons in this most sublime of seasons? Well, there are concrete reasons that this venerable institution remains a treasured year-round community resource. Consider its April lineup of criticallyacclaimed movies – “Steve Jobs” (rated R) on April 7; “The Danish Girl” (rated R)

on April 14; and “He Named Me Malala” (rated PG-13) on April 21. These movies start at 3:45 P.M. in the library’s Meeting Room, which delivers a state-of-the-art sight and sound experience. There’s also free popcorn and bottled water. There are activities for children, too. Storytime is offered at 11:00 A.M. Wednesdays and is open to toddlers and preschool kids. In addition, Lego Club meets at 3:45 P.M. Tuesday, April 12. This is a marvelous opportunity for youngsters to exercise their imagination and build close friend-

ships among kindred spirits. The library will also host Crafternoon at 3:45 P.M. Tuesday, April 26. Crafternoon teaches children a charming new craft each month and invaluable lessons in creativity. In addition to its book collection, Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library offers an expansive assortment of CD books, one of the greatest collections of DVDs in North Carolina, and ebooks. Also, if you need help with your digital reading devices, the staff is happy to provide assistance.

The Village Green springs to glorious life with the Cashiers Rotary Arts & Crafts Show, set for Memorial Day weekend.

T

he Village Green in Cashiers will come alive this Memorial Day weekend as some of the region’s finest artisans converge for the bi-annual Cashiers Rotary Arts & Crafts Show. The show takes place on Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. both days, rain or shine. While admission is free, a suggested donation of $3 or more is appreciated. Proceeds go to benefit the many community service projects and non-profit organizations supported by the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley. This juried event draws some of the finest artisans from throughout the Southeast. From as far away as Texas to local

favorites from right here in Western North Carolina, the show features more than 85 exhibitors showcasing a variety of original arts and handmade crafts. Spend the day browsing the aisles of one-of-a-kind pieces from painters, sculptors, jewelers, wood and metal workers, quilters, toy and instrument crafters, soap and condiment makers, and more. Feeling hungry? Stop by the Pavilion for a hamburger, hot dog, or veggie burger grilled fresh before your eyes and served up by members of Cashiers Rotary. There will be live performances by local musician Steven Johannessen, whose rich tones and repertoire of classics and standards have made him an area favorite

and children can laugh and play on the nearby playground while parents relax at a picnic table in the shade. All this is set against the backdrop of our beautiful mountain home and the charming atmosphere of Cashiers. CHAMBER’S SNEAK PEEK AT 2016 BY DONNA RHODES

Thanks to its members and a small army of dedicated volunteers, the Highlands Chamber of Commerce is assembling a calendar filled with wonderful events.

T

hroughout the year the Highlands Chamber of Commerce works overtime, making sure the Plateau is thriving with activity. While Chamber members are busy implementing scheduled programs, concerts, outings, etc., they are also brainstorming events for the following season. The Chamber generates a jampacked calendar that not only appeals to visitors and residents from toddlers to seniors, but to the businesses that serve those populations. The Highlands Plateau is one of Western North Carolina’s most exciting and entertaining mustdo-destinations. And that highly successful draw is owed largely to the vision and planning of the dedicated Chamber members. 2016 promises to be one of the best seasons ever with a line-up that has residents and visitors planning their social calendar around Highlands’ happenings. CHORAL WORKSHOP AND CONCERT BY ANGIE JENKINS

Highlands First Presbyterian Church’s Choral Workshop is a marvelous opportunity for local singers to learn under the tutelage of Master British Composer Philip W.J. Stopford and perform in a public concert – Saturday, May 7.

n Saturday, May 7, Highlands First Presbyterian Church’s Chancel Choir will host a Choral Workshop, open to all interested singers in the area. Participants will perform in a concert for the public at 7:00 P.M. that evening in the church’s sanctuary. The event will be facilitated by Master British Composer/ Conductor Philip W.J. For photographer Terry Barnes, the lens is the gateway to a magical world that most of us overlook.

D

igital photographer Terry Barnes is not only a fine artist, but also a skilled visual entertainer. He loves to pull the viewer into his images, excite their senses, and give them a good show as he transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. One of Barnes’ trademarks is his wrapped canvas presentations. That means the collector enjoys the clean look of an unfettered image with no frame to

limit it, not to mention the benefit of saving framing expense. Barnes says, “I love landscapes and shoot when no one is around. When I look at God’s creation I am swept away by a breathtaking vista, a magical sky, a roiling storm, or a nighttime starscape. To capture that on canvas is my deepest passion.” Turning 60 this January has made him

look at things differently. “I appreciate things more,” he says. “And while I remind myself to use the tools I have, I am always on the lookout for that little something extra that I can experiment with and see where it takes me.” One of his most satisfying photographic moments occurred in Charleston a few years ago. He was shooting at a large cypress pond rookery where ibis, egrets, and

other waterfowl nest. He said, “It looked like snowfall when all the birds took flight.” He had equally thrilling moments out west where the wide-open spaces were goose-bump grand. And, of course, his mountain scenics are their own special kind of viewing entertainment. When Barnes is not shooting a prize-

winning photo (he’s won a national juried show three years in a row, one of the snowy egrets being a show-stopper) or images for several galleries, he is playing acoustic guitar, a pastime he’s enjoyed for four decades. Barnes is retired from communications and living his dream. He says, “It’s been thrilling to make the transition from hobby

Shifting cultural tastes and aesthetics have not tarnished the appeal of silversmith Elizabeth Haskins’ exquisite creations.

E

lizabeth Haskins is a classic silversmith. Even though she was steeped in the arts as a child, she didn’t latch onto her true medium until college. At the insistence of a professor she took a jewelry-making class. It was love at first strike. “It was a challenge, but I loved the aspect of building small sculptures, using torches and hammers,” Elizabeth says. She began with a silver goblet, which progressed to repoussé silver trays, bowls, ladles, and traditional serving ware. Over the years, cultural shifts place less value on ceremonial silverware and more emphasis on simplicity. She followed that trend and now her work focuses on traditional and abstract jewelry that accessorizes anything from casual to formal. The Highlands Performing Arts Center brings a dynamic new energy to its performance calendar.

e decided to shake things up this year! We’ve included new entertainment genres with an illusionist/mentalist and comedy and satire along with our favorites of Broadway, bluegrass, and retro-rock. The season starts off with Travis LeDoyt, who The New York Times dubbed “the best young Elvis.” He’ll perform two concerts, June 17 and 18. Travis only sings Elvis’ songs from 1959 to 1962. Next up is Guy Bavli, Master of the Mind. An illusionist guaranteed to baffle your mind, he’ll confound and dazzle us on Saturday, June 25. He delights audiences with interactive entertainment that delivers a unique combination of mystery, humor, and suspense. Bluegrass is always welcome in our area. The Grammy Award-winning Balsam Range is coming back by popular demand on Saturday, September 17. In addition to the Grammy, Balsam Range also received Entertainer of the Year from the International Bluegrass Music Association. The political season will be in full swing by September and we’ll welcome the political relief with the satirical comedy of Capital Steps on Saturday, September 24. This is “Political Incorrectness” at its best. Regardless of whom you support…no one or no party is safe from being roasted. Broadway comes to the Highlands Cashiers with the Phat (Phantom) Pack. These three Phantoms met in Las Vegas while performing in “The Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular.” All three have sung on Broadway in a variety of hit shows, including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Miserables,” and many more. DRAMA CAMP: IT’S ALL AN ACT BY MARY JANE MCCALL

Highlands Playhouse’s Children’s Theatre Camp, slated for June 27-July 8, cultivates the dramatic talents of its young participants.

T

he Highlands Playhouse is always growing and looking for ways to entertain and engage the entire community. From the summer series of professional stage productions to the year-round, first-run movie theater, it offers something for everyone. This summer marks the return of the Children’s Theatre Camp. This program offers campers a chance to work with a team of professional actors to discover and explore many aspects of theatre such as acting, singing, and dancing. Directors Ginger Moseley and Bill Patti also recognize that drama programs teach skills that will benefit the students throughout their lives. “Students in drama learn so much more than just how to act on stage,” says Moseley. “The skills required to be a good actor also make for better adults in general.” She hopes that students will gain confidence and expand their creativity while taking away some other valuable skills such as problem solving, thinking under pressure, picking up on non-verbal cues, as well as the ability to take direction... all while having a lot of fun in the process. This year the two-week session will run from June 27 to July 8 (closed July 2-4

in observance of Independence Day). Class times are 9:00 A.M to noon for ages 5-9 and 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. for ages 10-16. A SPRING OPENING BY CHERIE FAIRCLOTH | HOLLY KLAINE, ARTIST

A showing of the enchanting creations of Holly Klaine launches a busy season for the Art League of Highlands-Cashiers.

T

he Art League of Highlands-Cashiers opens an exciting art season with its first artist reception at 4:30 PM Monday, April 25, in the Atrium at The Bascom, 323 Franklin Road in Highlands. Presentation starts at 5:00 PM and will feature artist Holly Klaine, a new and emerging artist in the ALHC. This event is free and open to the community. Nothing could be more appropriate for a Spring opening than the refreshing pastels of Holly, newcomer to the ALHC and resident of the neighboring Lakemont community in Northeast Georgia. A plein air painter, she takes her inspiration from wooded roadsides, the mountains that surround home, inside the forests that complete her landscape. Holly is uniquely inspired by continual seasonal changes. Most recently, she has seen a lifelong dream fulfilled – completion of her greenhouse style studio, built from glass and wood and providing her with a view of seasonal subjects to work from. Educated at Loyola University in New Orleans, Holly began her work as a plein air artist years ago in beautiful old Winter Park, Florida, before moving to North Georgia.

Working mainly in pastels, she prefers the portability of the medium to oils and watercolors, noting that Van Gogh created many of his bright works in pastels. Her collection includes a montage of anything that catches her eye with her box of pastels always at the ready. Versatility is a virtue to Holly who doesn’t limit herself to one medium. Beyond her love of pastels, she enjoys work in clay, creating one-of-a-kind spirit houses. Whimsical sculptures that catch the eye when a candle is placed inside to throw light in all directions, Holly’s houses are a favorite with her fans. I call it ‘Springtime in the Mountains.’ It loves living outside,” she said. The transcendent works of Lucien Harris III are spotlighted by a beguiling exhibit at The Bascom.

L

ucien Harris III was an American painter of natural subjects. He was a self-taught artist best known for his observations of the interactions of plants and animals. Harris worked as a naturalist painter, and was immensely influenced by his father, a highly regarded lepidopterist. Harris was a native of Atlanta, a Navy aviator, and a veteran of World War II. Subsequent to the war, Harris graduated from Emory University Business School. After graduating, Lucien joined the Trust Company of Georgia and later worked for The First National Bank of Orlando. In 1973 he retired as Senior Vice President of Sunbank N.A. An enthusiastic admirer of the beauty in Highlands, he relocated to the area in 1980 to gain continuous inspiration for his work. As an advocate for encouraging the arts within local communities, he became a founding member of The Art League of Highlands in 1980. Through his various roles as a teacher and supporter of the League, he was instrumental in the early development of The Bascom Louise Gallery at The Hudson Library. In collaboration with the Art League

of Highlands, The Bascom is honored to showcase the extraordinary talent of Lucien Harris. “We are fortunate to have this work in our collection and even more so to have borrowed additional paintings from the Harris family and local collectors who knew him and admired his work,” said Sallie Taylor, Chief Exhibitions Officer of The Bascom. Elementary? Hardly – Highlands Cashiers Players’ production of “The Game’s Afoot” promises to mix murder and comedy into a sparkling entertainment. It’ll be performed at the Highlands Performing Arts Center, May 19-29.

“C

ome, Watson, come!” he cried. “The game is afoot. Not a word! Into your clothes and come!” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may not have coined the phrase, “the game is afoot,” but it certainly brings to mind his famous detective. When you think of Sherlock Holmes, you’re no doubt picturing a character created by Broadway actor William Hooker Gillette. Gillette was a wellknown part of late 19th century and early 20th century theater. It is his portrayal of Holmes that has created the modern image of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes, complete with deerstalker cap and curved pipe. Gillette is the central character in the Highlands Cashiers

Players upcoming production of “The Game’s Afoot.” It is December 1936 and Gillette has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. It’s up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays. “The Game’s Afoot,” written by Ken Ludwig (“Fox on the Fairway,” “Lend Me A Tenor,” “Leading Ladies”) is directed

by HCP President Michael Lanzilotta. The cast includes Stuart Armor, Virginia Talbot, Lance Trudel, Raina Trent, David Spivey, Lauretta Payne, Megan McLean, and Lynleigh McLain. This well-known cast has brought many a play to life on stages in Highlands and will undoubtedly make their director proud. Careless water service leads to a dining disaster at Madison’s.

J

ust last month, someone came up to me and complained that my restaurant reviews are relentlessly positive. This perspective, he maintained, gives them all the necessary flavor and resiliency of a pile of overcooked kale. OK, I can argue the point, but I’ll also concede that the illusion of unrealistic sunshine is predicated on two immutable facts. First, my personality is eternally optimistic. Something about my basic makeup allows me to find something positive in nearly every experience. (Nearly. I can’t help but be more than a little saddened that I was not named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2015. For those of you keeping score, that makes the 38th year in a row. I’m beginning to think that I’ll never make it. Even

after I sent in 16 carefully composed selfies. And don’t even get me started on this year’s US News & World Report ’s Hunks & Hotties. Clearly, it’s rigged.) Secondly, it’s a reflection of the precarious situation facing every restaurant in Highlands and Cashiers. With such an abbreviated busy season and exorbitant rents, they’re all walking a tightrope suspended between some measure of success and utter disaster. If they’re not finessing the game with everything they’ve got – from menu to waitstaff to presentation, they just don’t survive. It’s brutal Darwinism at its most basic. Which brings us to Madison’s. This jewel at the heart of Old Edwards Inn & Spa is the apex of the local restaurant scene. Local restaurant scene? Let’s cast that net a little wider – with impeccable

ratings on Open Table and Yelp and AAA’s Four-Diamond Award, Madison’s is recognized as one of the finest dining experiences in America. So how am I going to cast a bit of shade on this venerable Highlands institution? Well, let’s start with the menu – Tricia ordered Crispy Rabbit Schnitzel and Rabbit Confit, and Almond Crusted Sunburst Trout; for me, it was a Rustic Caesar Salad and Red Wine Braised Beef Shortribs. For dessert, we coveted and reluctantly shared White Chocolate and Roasted Pear Bread Pudding, and Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding. Do you see the problem? With such a carefully composed menu, how could the actual dishes be anything less than extraordinary? We relished every morsel,

Rabbit Schnitzel and Rabbit Confit and it was a constant struggle between carefully savoring each forkful and shoveling great bites into our mouths like Ponderosa ranch hands. I really can’t find fault with Madison’s gorgeous dining room. It beguiles with a remarkably sumptuous atmosphere, inviting both intimate conversation and languid dining. This is not an experience to be rushed. Which brings us to our server. Pennijo was confident and unfailingly sunny and somehow managed to pull off the re-

markable trick of being both attentive and unobtrusive. But if we’re to find fault with our dining experience, it would be Pennijo’s mix-up with our water. As we were seated, Pennijo offered a choice of three waters to accompany our meals – Highlands Tap, Sparkling Water and Spring Water. Tricia opted for Highlands Tap, while I went with Spring Water. Well, halfway through the meal, Pennijo accidentally added Sparkling Water to my glass half-filled with Spring. You

can imagine my fury as the out-of-balance water played hob with my critic’s carefully calibrated palate. How was I supposed to enjoy my meal now?! (Actually, that water mix-up didn’t happen. Pennijo was faultless and poised and an absolute delight. I threw this last bit in so that Richard Simonson, the complainer I introduced at the beginning of this review, won’t have a leg to stand on the next time he takes me to task. Madison’s was an unforgettable experience.)

t seems like only a few years ago, kale was practically a forgotten part of Americans’ diet. Now, thanks to some innovative recipes and a greater commitment to eating healthy, kale is back on the menu. That’s good news for all of us. Kale is packed with all sorts of good things. Its only drawback is the sometimes bitter taste it delivers. Here’s a clever solution to this dilemma that’s both easy and quick. Bitter kale, combined with sweet and sour orange is always a winning combination. Add some protein-rich seeds and some healthy fats in the form of avocado and you have a happy and healthy salad going. This salad is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, folate, Vitamins A, C, K, protein and omega 3 fatty acids, so make an extra effort in trying to feed it to the kids and to yourself. Kale, Orange, Pumpkin Seed Salad Recipe YIELD: 2-3 Servings PREP: 5 mins Ingredients 4 leaves Kale (stalk removed) Juice of 1 /2 Orange 1 Orange peeled and chopped 1 Avocado sliced 1/4 cup Pumpkin seeds raw 1/4 cup Ground Hemp Seed 2 cloves Garlic pressed 1 pinch Cayenne Pepper 3 tablespoons Olive Oil 1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt Instructions 1. Rip kale into shreds. Add orange juice and manually massage the kale until it gets softer in a large bowl. 2. Transfer the kale onto a large plate and add all other ingredients (except for the last four) in layers. 2. Mix garlic, cayenne pepper, olive oil and salt in a cup to make a dressing. Pour the dressing over the salad. Serve,

Local restaurants are joining the fight against AIDS in the most delicious way possible – through their menus.

T

he Western North Carolina AIDS Project’s 14th Annual Dining Out For Life is happening again on Thursday, April 28. “This is WNCAP’s largest fundraiser of the year and biggest community event,” says Jesse Oates Vest, Special Events Coordinator for the agency. There are over 115 restaurants participating throughout seven counties that day and over 250 volunteers who help make it happen. Dining Out For Life is a national event that takes place all over the country with over 60 cities participating. Diners can support the cause just by heading out for a meal that day. Restaurants are donating 20 percent of their pro-

ceeds including breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and takeout. “We are excited to collaborate with restaurants and help them have a great day, hopefully bring out some new folks to their establishments, and make it a very community oriented event,” says Vest. There are several opportunities to support DOFL in the area. In Highlands, both On the Verandah and Wolfgang’s will be participating in the event again this year. In Franklin, The Bowery has signed on for the first year. By supporting Dining Out For Life and joining one of these restaurants on April 28, diners will help WNCAP create much

needed AIDS Awareness and Education throughout the 18 counties of Western North Carolina and enable the organization to continue providing compassionate care for families and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Rebecca Shuler’s Coconut Cake, a legacy of her beloved grandmother, is a thing of magic.

R

ebecca Shuler grew up with a grandmother who loved to cook. “Dolly” Ramey was known for her classic Southern meals, especially her fried chicken. Rebecca remembers her Granny fixing chicken for every church function and to give away to pastors in the area. Shuler, who is the Highlands town clerk, carries on Dolly’s legacy with another one of the family’s recipes, coconut cake. She says, “I never liked coconut but whenever Granny made this cake I couldn’t wait to eat it. It’s funny because now I can’t seem to attend any event without bringing one.” Rebecca’s husband Matt, IT director for the town and pastor of John’s Creek Bap-

tist Church in Cullowhee, feels the same way about this magical cake. He won’t eat coconut in any other dish! One change Rebecca has made to her grandmother’s original recipe is the addition of coconut cream. She says it makes the cake much more moist. Old Fashioned Coconut Cake 1- box white or yellow cake mix 1- 14 oz. can Cream of Coconut 1- cup sour cream 1- 8 oz. container Cool Whip 1 ½- cups sugar 1- tsp. vanilla 1- 7 oz. bag coconut 1- jar maraschino cherries (optional) Mix cake mix as directed and bake in three layers. Assemble cake while warm

and poke holes with a straw in each layer. Pour cream of coconut into holes. Mix the sour cream, Cool Whip, sugar, and vanilla together until smooth. Use this to ice the cake. Sprinkle coconut over the icing and top with halved maraschino cherries, if desired. Rebecca says the cake may be served warm, but it’s just as good after being stored overnight in the refrigerator. This writer was witness to the evidence of the cake’s magical properties. It sat in the town offices with everyone watching anxiously, forks in hand, while the magical cake rested under glass awaiting its photo op. Dolly Ramey would have been proud.

The globalization of wines is leading to a homogenous product and a loss of savor and “place.”

I

began my wine career 25 years ago in an environment where I was, almost exclusively, exposed to domestic wines. My experience with old world wine, though limited, was eye-opening. The differences between new and old world were obvious. I rarely saw an old world wine with alcohol levels above 13 per-

cent, the fruit was restrained and balanced and there was a strong sense of place or “Terroir” The difference today is far less obvious. I read about the New France where winemakers are going for a more global style, fruit forward with greater accessibility, and more weight (Alcohol). I am seeing

wines coming from France and Italy with alcohol of 15 percent or more. I wonder. Is this shift merely fashion, an economic trend or is the warming climate taking the decision out of the producers’ hands? Whatever the reason I hope it is just a trend. We all may be the same but our wine doesn’t have to be.

Embrace the splendor of the season with a visit to Cliffside Recreation Area.

A

s spring begins here in the mountains, the landscape transforms from a dull brown speckled with evergreen trees into a lush and vibrant mixture of colors, scents, and sounds that dazzle the senses any time you step outside. To best experience the wonders of nature one must venture out of town and into the wild. For those with a busy schedule or no desire to travel deep into the back country, Cliffside Recreational Area acts as the perfect inbetween. It allows for easy access to the outdoors, offers gorgeous scenery, and many other opportunities to enjoy nature. Located in the Nantahala National Forest just a short distance from Highlands off of 106, Cliffside is perfect for a day or afternoon trip. With camping offered close by at Vanhook Glade Campground, overnight or extended stays are also possible. At the heart of the recreational area lies Cliffside Lake. This small lake is hatchery supported and stocked with trout. It’s open for fishing year-round with the exception of March, as that is the time of year it is stocked with fish. As with most locations, a valid North Carolina fishing license is required while fishing at the lake. Access to fishing can be found at a variety of spots including a fishing dock, and all are made easily accessible by a loop trail that runs the entire circumference of the lake. Along the trail there are also areas for picnicking complete with tables, grills, and a wonderful view of the lake. There is also a roped-off swimming area on the lake shore for anyone that wants to cool off on a warm day. In addition to the lake access, there are several trails available for exploration of the area. There are hikes to waterfalls, ridge line trails, and access to the Vanhook Glade Campground for anyone making the stay overnight. The trails vary in length but none are much longer than two miles. Given that the trails are relatively short, they are passable by most despite some moderate inclines on a few of the trails. During all seasons, with the exception of winter, a parking fee of $4 is required. There are also picnic shelters available for reservation available for a fee. With a variety of ways to experience the wonders of the outdoors, the Cliffside Recreation Area is a must for anyone that enjoys a woodland sabbatical. With its ease of access and many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, there is no reason to miss the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful outdoor recreational area.

arcissus – what a name. These flowers have every right to be a little narcissist – after all, they’ve got the guts to stick their neck out on a cold Spring day while other flowers are still getting their beauty sleep. In Greek mythology, Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, and couldn’t tear himself away, and there he wasted away and turned into a flower. (I could think of worse things to turn into.) This is a pretty important plant, and they have their society – The American Daffodil Society. There are about 50 different species of Narcissus, and over 25,000 hybrids. They grow here as well as Africa and Japan. (I guess there were Narcissistic people all over the world) These flowers are commonly called Daffodils, or Jonquils, and are all a part of the Amaryllis family. The leaves are sometimes mistaken for blades of grass, and the flower almost always has a trumpet or cup surrounded by 6 petals. These are hearty plants and are willing to share, so you may see them popping up where they weren’t intended. I’m not sure how long a daffodil bulb will survive, but it is known that they can easily live longer than the person that planted them. I have some of those. About 20022003, my mother in South Carolina kept asking me to “dig up some of those Jonquils your Daddy planted and take them home with you.” I put it off for a few years, but finally one Spring I did, and each Spring I’m always surprised to see one, then two then several of the sweet little yellow reminders of my parents in my own yard. You can grow them in pots, you can force them indoors in the dead of winter, or you can “naturalize” them, by letting them grow and multiply. They love woodland areas, and can tolerate our sunny days. Off the mountain, an area with partial shade would probably fare them better bloom times. Some daffodils bloom from six weeks to six months given the right growing conditions. These bulb plants look best in multiples, and are super easy to grow. With so many varieties, it’s hard to decide, but start with one or two, then add a little every year. When the Narcissus family has its family reunion in early Spring, it’s always a happy occasion because it means Spring is finally here.

The diminutive Golden-Winged Warbler is making its last stand in Appalachia.

E

arly spring in Appalachia brings the return of some of our most beautiful and precious songbirds, the warblers. Soon our trees and bushes will be decorated with members of this large avian family sporting such descriptive and geographic names as Yellow-throated, Hooded, Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Kentucky, Chestnut-sided, Canada, Black-throated Blue, Black-and-white and Black-throated Green. The rarest of these small, colorful birds is the Goldenwinged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera). This gaily colored bird sports a slate gray cape with a black bib and mask, white belly, black bill and bright yellow brush strokes on his crest and wings. Only slightly less spectacular, females lack only the black bib and mask. Its song is varied including a high first note and fine vocal buzz: zeee zaa-zaa-zaa.

The Golden-winged Warbler winters in semi-deciduous forest areas and coffee plantations in southern Central America and the northern Andes of South America. Migrating north in early spring, their summer breeding grounds include Appalachia, notably the Highlands Plateau, and the American Midwest, especially Minnesota and Wisconsin. They occupy open shrubby areas, wet thickets and bogs, and regenerating clear cuts and successional land. Foraging for insects and spiders, the favorite food of Golden-winged Warblers is caterpillars. The male courts the female with “moth flight” featuring a slow flyby and fervent wing beating. “Goldens” are mostly monogamous and both parents feed demanding fledglings. Ours might be the last generation to see this glorious bird in Appalachia as it

goes the way of the Carolina Parakeet and Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Suffering severe population declines in the last 50 years, the Golden-winged Warbler is threatened with extinction. Expert birders now go entire seasons without spotting a single Golden in Appalachia. The chief problem is loss of habitat. This decline is occurring despite national, state and local efforts at conservation and preservation of both the Golden and its habitat. Want to get involved? SPRING PEEPER

T

he spring peeper’s most distinctive trait is the dark cross or X-shaped blotch that usually is found on its back. In fact, the species name “crucifer” means “cross bearing.” The spring peeper can be tan, gray, yellowish, orange or pinkish. It is a small frog with small toe pads. Spring peepers inhabit woodlands and swamps, preferring areas of thick, brushy undergrowth near ephemeral or semipermanent ponds.

ABOUT TROUT BY DONNA RHODES

Powell Wheeler’s passion for brook trout ensures healthy populations in Western North Carolina.

W

hile Powell Wheeler’s job with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission focuses on anything that relates to fishing in public rivers, ponds, lakes, and streams, he has a special place in his heart for the out-of-the-way places where native brook trout dwell. Sometimes these populations are very isolated, which plays havoc with genetic diversity. These isolated streams are frequently on private land. At the invitation of landowners, Wheeler can visit and offer suggestions for restoring these important habitats. To facilitate his passion for brook trout rejuvenation, he uses sampling equipment called a backpack shocker. While

the word “shocker” might raise eyebrows, Wheeler assures us it is perfectly safe. An electrical current buzzes the water and the fish in the vicinity are knocked unconscious for a few seconds and pop to the surface. Wheeler nets the trout and takes a tiny snip off each tail fin, labels it, releases the fish, and sends the sample to the fish genetics lab to determine that fish’s family tree. Did it descend from New England trout introduced to North Carolina waters? Does it show signs of inbreeding? Is it a genetically sound specimen? Are all the fish in the sample healthy and the ecosystem balanced? These data help point the Wildlife

Resources Commission in the right direction for trout stockings, better regulations, and for restoring native trout populations. While Wheeler does the backpack shocking mostly in public waters, he wants to help landowners restore their waterways as well. In doing so, it ultimately supports the entire state’s network of interlocking water systems. If you have brook trout, invite Wheeler to your property. ears are beautiful and fascinating creatures. While many people are frustrated with bears getting into their birdfeeders, trash or even homes, most feel a sense of awe and respect for them. Leaving aside the challenges of living in bear country for a moment, here are some interesting facts: • Black bears are found only in North America: Canada, 42 of the United States, and northern Mexico. • “Black” bear is a species, not a color. Variations include brown, cinnamon, blond, or white (i.e. the Kermode “Spirit” Bears of the Pacific NW). Some have a white chest blaze. • Their eyesight is good, though a little shortsighted. Their senses of hearing and smell are far superior to ours. A bear’s nose works 100 times better than ours; they can smell food over a mile away. • While classified as carnivores, 85 percent of a bear’s diet consists of plants— nuts, acorns grass, mushrooms, roots, seeds, berries/fruit, etc. Their “meat” consists mostly of insects and larvae; they occasionally take a fawn or other small animal. • Bears are not true hibernators—dormancy is more accurate. They do not eat, drink, or defecate for several months. This is when cubs are born. • Bears are more timid than you’d expect. People have witnessed bears running away from chipmunks and butterflies. • Bears communicate with vocalizations and body postures. Mothers issue commands to cubs with grunts. Bears will moan and sway when afraid. They don’t actually growl, but will huff and clack their teeth to scare us (or other bears). • Attacks are rare. They might rush toward us if they feel threatened by our proximity, but they usually retreat without causing harm. • Bears that become accustomed to humans because of food or trash may act tame, but they are still wild animals that can cause harm to our pets, our property, and us. Black bears coming out of hibernation are very hungry, so please take steps to prevent access to non-natural food sources. BOTANICAL EXPLORERS & EARLY SETTLERS

A committed community has spared Highlands’ natural heritage.

T

his is the second in a series of three articles saluting the Botanical History of the Highlands Plateau, based upon research of the Laurel Garden Club’s Land Stewards and Ran Shaffner. The pamphlet and video accompanying the research were winners of the N. C. Society of Historians’ Paul Green Multimedia Award in 2015. In the 18th century, botanical explorers introduced the Western world to the Highlands Plateau through books, illustrations, and articles about its diverse plant life, ancient forests, and appealing climate. In 1875, Macon County native Silas McDowell enticed Samuel Kelsey and C.C. Hutchinson to visit. The pair were so taken with it they founded the town of Highlands and set about promoting it as a gardener’s paradise.

People from up and down the Atlantic seaboard hitched their wagons to Highlands’ star. Many brought considerable horticultural expertise. Others picked up growing skills along the way. All were interested in preserving the natural beauty of the area, so much so that Thomas Harbison, Mary Chapin Smith, and the Boynton brothers established societies for the study of botany and horticulture. A growing Highlands attracted a few who sought to profit from the consumption of its land and forests. In 1905 the Highlands Improvement Society was formed. Within four years it purchased the summit of Satulah Mountain, providing permanent public access. Today’s Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust grew out of H.I.S. and is North Carolina’s oldest land trust, conserving 2,500

acres to date. The American Chestnut Blight in the late 1920s and the leveling of an ancient forest for a golf course prompted Atlanta native Clark Foreman to propose a natural history Museum to educate the public about the importance of preserving the land, its beauty, and resources. In 1930 botanist William Coker and zoologist Edward Reinke joined Foreman in establishing a Biological Laboratory, today’s fgdfgBiological Station. While keeping its gaze fixed on the storied past, the Cashiers Historical Society is mapping an exciting year ahead.

016 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Cashiers Historical Society. It was kicked off with a $100-aplate brunch held at the historic Hanks House with about 40 guests in attendance. Since that time, so much new information has been learned about the early days in Cashiers Valley and so much valuable historic preservation has been accomplished. Alan Rhew, the society’s Executive Director, recently sent an update on upcoming programs and activities planned for the 2016 season which I’d like to share with you. There’s a lot for you to look forward to. The Phase III Historic Sites Survey is just about ready to go to the printer and should be available for purchase prior to summer. The primary areas included in this survey are Highway 64 East, Cedar Creek, and the Bull Pen communi-

ties. There are 52 properties that were surveyed by Sybil Argintar, Preservation Planning Consultant, who documented the architecture, photographed properties and described the known history about them. Millie Lathan, who has completed three phases of Faces and Places of Cashiers Valley, is currently working on the fourth phase and plans are to incorporate those new additions into a high quality, hard bound, compendium containing all four phases. This year’s CHS Symposium will be held on June 9 in partnership with Western Carolina University with the subject being Horace Kephart and featuring excellent speakers, with lunch included. The venue will be on the WCU campus. The annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse, titled “You Can Leave Your Hat

On,” will be located at a house that’s located in the midst of extensive beautifully manicured grounds. Accompanying the house is a documented history dating back to the 1880s. The Opening Event for the showhouse is slated for Friday, August 12. Colonel John’s Cabin, the oldest standing structure in the Cashiers area, which sits next to the Zachary-Tolbert House, will be furnished and operable by this spring – ready for multi-uses such as seasonal activities and programs. What a great “save” that building has turned out to be. Also in the planning stages are “Rambles,” guided history tours to places like cemeteries and historic sites. Work is being done on a Heritage Trail, via a walkable path system. Stay tuned for future updates of events offered by the Cashiers Historical Society.

The solution to the Kenny Conundrum carries its own sweet smell of success.

I

had an English Bulldog named Bentley. And like his automobile namesake, he passed gas from intake to exhaust. Once he was soundly snoring at my feet and expelled a methane cloud that nearly set my hair and the curtains on fire. It was so loud it woke him. He jumped up, stared at his butt, and then barked at his meanie for a good five minutes. Bentley’s tale of flatulency may have been legendary, but there is an account that surpasses even Bentley’s best. When my son was a young teen, we carpooled to a school a half-hour away. Every morning we picked up Kenny, a.k.a. Kaboom Boy. It was Kenny’s premeditated delight to let loose a Sousaphone cadenza of ka-

booms every morning. Pleading, admonishing, or threatening to tell his mother didn’t faze him. “I can’t help it!” he’d say, laughing hysterically as we gagged and coughed. Then one night it hit me. Perfume. You know how ancient cologne gets that putrid, rancid stench? So I rummaged through Granny’s drawers, if you will pardon the expression, mining for Avon. There it was, still in its collectible Siamesecat-with-rhinestone-eyes bottle. I carefully unscrewed the cap and let the odor waft my direction. My eyes teared-up. The skin on my nose sizzled, then peeled. ‘Yep, this’ll do,” I said. So next morning, we picked up Kaboom Boy, and he didn’t disappoint. A

mile down the road he shot a cannon blast so vile I nearly ran off the highway. I pulled into a rest stop, reached into the glove box, extracted the stink-loaded cat bomb, turned around and let him have it. He tried to wriggle free from his seat belt, but not before I thoroughly drenched him. After his screaming stopped, he became uncharacteristically silent, north and south. We heard ol’ Kenny stifled his flatulency over the decades and became so bloated he was frequently mistaken for the Goodyear Blimp, his last sighting over the Biminis. Ah! The thrill of victory and the agony of da fweeet.

f you’re like most Americans, you eat a high-carb breakfast packed with cereals, bagels, muffins, and fruit smoothies, or you don’t eat breakfast at all either because you’re too busy or you want to lose weight. You are sabotaging your weight loss goals by destabilizing blood glucose and insulin after the night’s fast. Breakfast is exactly what it sounds like — the breaking of a fast. After eight-plus hours of no food, your body needs fuel to bring its systems up to speed and maintain even energy for the day. As it turns out, eating a solid breakfast is one of the best things you can do to lose weight. We’ve all been taught the “calories in

vs. calories out” theory for weight loss. In an effort to cut calories, we skip breakfast because it’s the easiest meal to do without, especially if we tend to wake up with no appetite or we’re always in a rush to get to work. But while calories can matter, skipping breakfast can actually lead to weight gain. Chronic low blood sugar creates a cascade effect in your hormonal system that directly affects your body’s ability to deal with stress. This can result in increased inflammation throughout your body, which can lead to weight gain. Low blood sugar also causes brain fog, mood issues, insomnia, decreased brain function, and other health issues. None

of these symptoms will help you stick to a healthier eating plan. Skipping breakfast makes you more likely to binge on sugary foods that result in an energy crash later in the day – making you less likely to go out and get that much-needed exercise. (PS: A big sweet, milky coffee drink with whipped cream is not a breakfast.) Eating a nutrient-dense, lower carb breakfast with plenty of protein and healthy fats provides the brain and body with proper fuel, balances your blood sugar and insulin, and gives your metabolism a boost for the day. Eat a strong protein-based breakfast as it can also reduce hunger hormones.

Healthy habits are simply a matter of time and a bit of patience.

e often take health for granted until we hit a bump in the road, becoming ill or developing a problem. The body innately wants to be healthy and does a great job keeping itself in homeostasis or balance but we still abuse our systems just by modern, everyday living. There are many obstacles today that we didn’t face 30 to 50 years ago. Our pollution and toxicity levels are much greater than they used to be, including in our water, air, food, and soil. Many of us do the best we can by

buying organic and “eating clean,” but sometimes this isn’t enough. Our bodies still face daily challenges of toxicity. Those who don’t pay any attention to how they live or what they eat are facing a much greater problem as life goes on. We have the choice to avoid disease, illness, and other ailments caused by a breakdown of the body systems and cells. Being healthy on a cellular level takes education and commitment on a daily basis. Once the habits are formed, good or bad, they take time to break and form new ones. Do something for at least 30

days in a row and it will begin to become a habit. This is one way to take charge of your own health. Start by learning how the cells can break down at a much faster speed than the body can keep up. When the cells break down this way, these free radicals, or cell pieces, floating in the bloodstream can damage other cells and organs. Over time, this can cause damage to our DNA, taking a toll on our organs and brain and decreasing longevity. Choose to take hold of your health and your life and you will reap the long term benefits!

Gentle Paisley’s incredible forbearance and the tender ministrations of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society have given her the promise of a better life.

A

bandoned and left to die. Starving, lost and alone. Crippled by blindness. How many obstacles must be placed in the path of a soul before they finally give up on humanity, and give up on themselves? But Paisley did neither. This amazing three-year-old Labrador mix was dumped on the side of the road in Glenville last August and forced to fend for herself. But her will to live, and her ability to forgive, were stronger than the cowardly humans of her past. Paisley was extremely malnourished when she first arrived at our no-kill shelter. She was so feeble that it took weeks for our caring staff to nurse her back to health. Once we realized that Paisley was vision-impaired, we spared no expense to explore options to improve her eyesight, including taking Paisley to

Greenville, South Carolina to be seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Our generous donors and supporters made it possible for us to provide Paisley with the highest level of compassionate care, even when the vet bills far exceeded $1,0 0 0. Yet do not despair over Paisley’s blindness, for as any human companion of a visually-handicapped animal can attest, heightened senses such as hearing and smell help to dramatically overcome the inability to see. Paisley is very happy and quite comfortable within just a few moments of new surroundings, and she is as loving and affectionate as any canine we have ever known. Paisley may not be able to “see” according to the conventional definition of eyesight, but this incredibly spe-

cial canine can look directly into your heart and promise you a lifetime of unconditional love. She is amazing and inspiring, much like the hymn written by John Newton: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind, but now I see.” Established in 1987, Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit no-kill animal shelter that receives no state or county tax dollars, and no funding from any national animal organization. This flagship community organization was chartered May 2, 1945, and has been active and growing ever since. Highlands School and the young people of the area have always been a focal point for this club, sponsoring many activities and projects for the students’ and school’s benefit. The Interact Club (a mini Rotary Club for students), Youth Exchange, Boy Scout Troop 207, the Dental Program, Students of the Month, College Scholarships, Academic Reception, Ath-

magine you’ve just battled the mountain road up to Highlands. It’s your first trip here and you’re stumped. Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, there is hiking to be done, but where? If you’re smart, you’ll stop by the Highlands Visitor Center. They have everything you need for a well-informed visit – maps, brochures, magazines, and gracious volunteers to answer your questions. There are only two hearty souls who fill the position year round, Elaine Carlton and Tracey Strain. What does it take to be a successful volunteer? Clearly, a familiarity with the surroundings as well as patience and a sense of humor. In speaking with them both, it’s obvious they each possess these traits.

Tracey, former owner of Whiskers on Main Street for 20 years, has been in Highlands since the 1980s. When asked why she chose to volunteer at the Visitor Center, Tracey said, “After I closed my shop I missed that connection I had with other businesses in town. Being a volunteer helps me stay current with what’s going on in Highlands. I guess I’m just not constitutionally predisposed to sitting at home. We can have a great deal of fun in the Visitor Center and I like to make people glad they’re here.” Elaine Carlton came to Highlands in 2004 after retiring from a career in state government in Atlanta. Her husband Phil, who moved up here in 1999, was already donating his time and suggested Elaine

After two years here she realized she wanted to fully immerse herself in her new hometown so she joined the Highlands Rec Park and began volunteering at the Visitor Center. “For my entire life not only my vocation but my avocation revolved around helping the less fortunate,” she says. “I wanted to try something different and I wanted to share my great love and knowledge of the area.” Even if you’re a resident, take some time to stop by the Visitor Center and speak with the front desk volunteer. SATULAH’S PEAK EXPERIENCE

Satulah Mountain remains a towering presence in Highlands, thanks to the sustained efforts of the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust.

atulah Mountain has been a place of significance for a long time. To the Cherokee it was known as “Grumbler” or “Snorter,” perhaps a place to stay away from. To the first settlers it may have looked like a sitting stool and perhaps Satulah is a derivation of “Stoolie.” In 1909, the residents of Highlands thought enough of the mountain to put their resources together to buy a large tract so it would be protected from development. Today the organization that has the responsibility to care for that original tract is the HighlandsCashiers Land Trust. Since 1909 the protected lands on Satulah have grown to 94 acres owned by HCLT plus two conservation easements that add another 15.5 acres. How did we get to be the largest owner of land on Satulah? It began with the original tract in 1909. In 1997, the donation of 4.5 acres by Howard Jenkins and Bryan Baldwin secured pedestrian access to the Mountain via Satulah Road. In 1998, the citizens of Highlands again banded together to purchase the eight acre tract at the end of Worley Road, now the John Barnfather Hobson III Park. In 2008, Robby Haynes and his brother Wycliffe donated 11 acres. Robby donated another 1.18 acres in 2014. There are currently numerous unsupported facts and accusations about Satulah. Here are a few truths – The lands the Land Trust owns are a public park and the public has the right to walk to that property via Satulah and Worley Roads. The Land Trust will vigorously defend the public’s right to go to the park, and has done so in the past. It is home to a special ecosystem and several rare plant species. It has been designated a North Carolina Registered Heritage Area. Since 1909 the summit of Satulah has been and will remain a public park for all to enjoy in perpetuity. LITERACY FOR LIFE BY TONYA HENSLEY LITERACY COUNCIL OF HIGHLANDS

The Literacy Council of Highlands is offering guidance during the critical years of a child’s development.

W

hile we all know that literacy is important, specialists are now informing us that the first 2,000 days of a child’s life are even more critical than we thought. From the website first2000days.org, we gain more insight into this process: “Brains are built, not born.” The brain is one of the only organs not fully developed at birth. Most of the cells are there, but the connections – the wiring that forms the architecture is not. These connections develop in early childhood. Every experience a baby has forms a neural connection in the brain. These connections – called synapses – form very rapidly in the early years at a rate of 700 synapses per second. These early days can predict future success. By third grade, we know that a child’s academic future and success in life is predictable. If a child has not caught up by fourth grade, chances are he or she will not catch up, and this can lead to increased chances of dropout and a lifetime of struggling. We are fighting to end this cycle by offering quality programs for all ages, free of charge. Birth – Five Years: The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is offered throughout Macon County. This wonderful program provides a book per month mailed directly to the child’s home. This can build a library of 60 quality children’s books, chosen by a team of experts in child literature. To register, go to imaginationlibrary.com. Kindergarten – Third Grade: Children can participate in several ways, the first being our after-school ESL enrichment program. This program provides homework assistance, cultural experiences, and literacy activities. Children can also participate in our ESL summer camp program in July. In Franklin, all children can participate in remediation directly in their classroom setting. Fourth – Twelfth Grade: Study Hall is held in a group setting and provides homework assistance, computers for research and printing assignments, and additional resources, such as games and books. This age group can also participate in ESL class which teaches English and related skills. Adults: Evening ESL and GED classes, including dinner and a children’s program, are offered two nights per week. All Ages: Our computer lab, featuring wi-fi and Rosetta Stone in English and Spanish, is open to the public. Individual tutoring is available in any subject. AMI Appalachian South, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is excited for the spring and seasons! The mission of NAMI North Carolina is to provide support, education, advocacy, and public awareness so that all affected by mental illness can build better lives. Here’s what we’re offering this year: Family to Family – For family members of someone with mental illness. Information is provided about mental illnesses and there’s discussion about how to deal with emotional overload. Peer to Peer – Education for individuals with mental illness with the goal of developing coping skills to aid in the recovery journey. Parents and Teachers as Allies – Presented by a health care professional, teacher, parent, or someone with a mental ill-

ness, this focuses on working together to support any child with mental illness. In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness – This uses video clips, personal testimonies, and audience discussions to educate about mental illnesses and recovery. ashiers Cares distributed over $22,000 at its March meeting to representatives of the nine charities supported by its fundraising efforts. Under the leadership of Lynne Keating, it was the most successful year since its beginning. The charities are Fishes and Loaves Pantry, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Cashiers, Community Care Clinic, Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic, Clean Slate Coalition, Literacy Council of Cashiers, Four Seasons Hospice Care, Life Challenge of Western North Carolina, and United Christian Ministries of Jackson County. Each organization is a 501(c) tax-deductible group whose main focus is the Cashiers area. Cashiers Cares is an all-volunteer

group whose mission is to fundraise for these groups who help and support our community. Its motto is “Neighbors helping Neighbors,” with the goal being to help make a difference in as many people’s lives as possible in the Southern Jackson County, Cashiers area. The group’s major activity is sponsoring the Lunch after the Christmas Parade at the Community Center. It’s free for all to attend, with special appearances by Santa and friends. The Rotary Club helps with the food for this event. At this time all the charities are in attendance with information on their organization and available to meet attendees and explain their groups’ goals and purposes. Donations can

be made at the lunch on a “Shopping List” of explicit needs of each charity and donors choose who and what they want to give. There is also an annual Mail Campaign which brings in much needed donations. Cashiers Cares was begun with the aid of local churches – the Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Jude, and Cashiers United Methodist Church – all of which continue to support the organization. There are plans to continue to grow fundraising efforts and to raise muchneeded funds for the betterment of this community and its citizens. A local farmer’s co-op offers just-picked produce that’s both healthy and delicious.

D

o you know what a CSA is? It stands for Community Supported Agriculture and means that you buy shares in a farmer’s harvest. What do you get for your money? You’re guaranteed the freshest produce available and it comes directly from your neighbors. The Cashiers-Highlands area is lucky to have a CSA right here and it’s called Blue Ridge Farmers Co-op. In its eighth season, it’ll run from June through October. This project was spearheaded by local growers Donna Few and Bob Smith, both of whom are dedicated to locally grown, organically produced fruits and vegetables. Few’s farm is high in the mountains around Cashiers while Bob is from Bryson City. Since the farms are at vastly different elevations this means you’ll be able to reap the benefits of an extended growing season. So, just how does it work? Well, you sign up for your share. Then on Wednesdays you’ll pick up a box of your fresh, organic produce at the United Community Bank in Cashiers. Each box will vary in content depending on what is available for harvest at the time. There will also be a tailgate

market running concurrently and you’ll find more things from the co-op like shiitakes, Bob’s honey, wild foraged mushrooms, organic sprouts, and micro-greens. Harvests will continue through autumn, so seasonal fruits and vegetables will be available for 18 weeks. Smith and Few are not only dedicated to growing organically, but all the seeds they use are heirloom. There are absolutely no genetically modified plants grown on their farms.
