ward-winning Canyon Kitchen will be the venue for a fundraiser for Hospice House Foundation of Western North Carolina on Wednesday, May 10. Not only is this a most worthy cause, but it’s guaranteed to be an evening of fun and shared experience, along with exquisite dining. A highlight of the evening will be guest speaker Hattie Bryant. Bryant is a healthcare consumer advocate and is author of the book, “I’ll Have It My Way: Taking Control of End-of-Life Decisions.” Hailing from New Orleans, Bryant has made her living as an adult educator. She later taught management, sales, and customer service to hundreds of small businesses and from the convention platform. She had the privilege of presenting seminars in 47 states and produced teaching materials for customers like ABC-TV, Chase-JP Morgan, IBM, Microsoft, Qwest, and Verizon. Her seminars and continuing-education curriculum development have been in business schools throughout the world. Most recently Bryant studied at the University of Southern California Graduate School of Gerontology. How did she

become an advocate for end-of-life choices? In 1990 her mother suffered a severe stroke and lost all cognition. It was then that Bryant realized she could not depend on others to make decisions about what she might want done if she could no longer speak for herself. Bryant’s book is a tool for people to minimize, if not avoid entirely, the pain, suffering, confusion, and disagreements that can arise when end-of-life decisions are not spelled out clearly. Her book encourages you to begin this process now, whether perfectly healthy or facing a serious illness. Each event guest will receive a copy of “I’ll Have It My Way” and she’ll open the floor to questions and answers. Her message is relevant and her energy is contagious. Canyon Kitchen, located in Cashiers at Lonesome Valley, has become widely known for its open-air dining and extraordinary food. Cashiers Library offers a chance to get to know your shy, furry neighbors.

hether you’re a lifetime resident of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau or the briefest of seasonal residents, you know that you share your living space with a host of wild neighbors. Squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, deer, bears, maybe even elk or, maybe, maybe, panthers − there’s a secret parade that’s staged just outside your sight every day and every night. They’re masters of stealth and they avoid you with a skill level that’d make a ninja resign in disgrace. But Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library is offering you the means of turning a spotlight on the creatures living right next to you. Motion-activated cameras are now available for check-out from the library for participants in the “North Carolina’s Candid Critters” initiative, which enables library users to participate in a statewide wildlife study. To join the project and check out a camera, sign up and complete a brief online training session at NCCandidCritters.org. Cameras will be distributed to participants

who have already registered. Candid Critters is a state-sponsored study that makes cameras available through public libraries. Participants check out the cameras to mount on private property or public land, and weeks later retrieve the images for uploading to the Candid Critters website. Approved participants will be able to use their cameras for a series of three-week deployments. Library staff will be available to help with uploading the images. Data will be used to map trends in animal populations across the state. Typical images from the project — including deer, bears and bobcats in the eastern part of the state — can be viewed at www.tinyurl.com/candcrit. Candid Critters is a partnership among N.C. State University, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the State Library of N.C., N.C. Cardinal, North Carolina’s public libraries and the Smithsonian. hile there are many delightful places to wine and dine in Highlands, the Center for Life Enrichment urges you to take your dining experience to a new level and participate in one of our many culinary classes offered this season. These events are much more satisfying than just going into a restaurant and ordering from the menu. The distance between the chef and the diner is disregarded, making this a memorable culinary experience as the chef engages with participants in the course of the food preparation. Wednesday, June 7. Cost is $95 for CLE members and $110 for nonmembers. Experience a culinary feast at the new Library Kitchen and Bar as Chef Johannes turns on the “Wow” factor like only he can. The four-course menu will also include a selection of beer and wine. “Lakeside Cooking Demonstration and Lunch” will be held from 11:30 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 14. Cost is $65/$75. Enjoy an early summer lunch with hosts Laura Huerta and Travis Brooks at Lakeside Restaurant. A delicious menu served with wine will leave

your taste buds completely satisfied. Experience a “Flavorful Taste of Portugal,” at 4:00 P.M. Monday, July 17. Cost is $90/$100. Chef M (Melissa Pelkey-Hass) will entertain with her humor and vast culinary skills as she prepares an authentic Portuguese meal blended with Old World wines. It’ll be a meal that’s not only delicious but unlike any other. “The Edible Foraging Guided Tour” will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 12. Cost is $30/$40. Take a guided hike with self-taught forager Ross Pearman to identify native plant species and mushrooms. This will be a moderate hike with frequent stops as your guide shares with you those morsels you can safely eat and those things you should stay away from. Ross provides many of the local restaurants with wild edible plants and mushrooms. “Cook & Tell: Recipes and Stories from Savannah’s Renowned Chef Johnathon Scott Barrett” is set for 11:00: A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 22. Cost is $45/$55. In this program, Johnathon will talk about his newest release, which highlights the South’s love of food and storytelling. Following the lecture there’ll be a reception on the porch and Johnathon will serve a few of his best hors d’oeuvres. “Sausage Academy,” 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 16, is a hands-on

class with Warren Dawkins who spent 53 years in the sausage industry. This unique seminar will provide you with the opportunity to make several different types of sausage, and you’ll leave with samples to enjoy at home. Cost is $45/$55. “All Time Favorites of On the Verandah” will be held from noon to 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 20. Cost is $50/$60.Participants will enjoy a smorgasbord of the Verandah’s favorite dishes. Demonstrations by Chef Andrew Figel, recipes and wine pairing make this an annual event not to miss. “Brewing and Brewery Tour in Beer City, USA,” will be held from 9:00 A.M. until later afternoon Saturday, September 23. Cost is $125/$140. Love Beer? This trip is for you as we explore craft brewing and breweries in Asheville, the city named in a USA Today poll as being the finest beer town in America. The program will be led by Dr. Sean O’Connell, Western Carolina University Biology Department Chair and leader of the Tuckaseegee Brewing Cooperative. “Tasting the Difference Between Old World and New World Wine,” is set for 3:30 P.M. The town of Highlands gets a well-deserved sprucing up with the Plateau Pickup Day, Saturday, April 22. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and enjoy a post-pickup cookout.

pril showers bring May flowers, and here on the Plateau April also brings Highlanders together doing the serious work of spring cleaning in anticipation of our coming summer season. More daylight hours, budding flowers, and that wonderful feeling of spring in the air makes us all want to shake off the gray of winter and do our part sprucing up the community. You’ll know that spring cleaning has hit its crescendo when the annual Plateau Pickup Day arrives on Saturday, April 22, and you spot volunteers in bright orange vests picking up litter by the roadside. This community undertaking, sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, bears no resemblance to the usual grumbling, grimacing “got to get this spring cleaning done” frame of mind. Instead, it brings smiling faces of all ages out for a day of community service cleaning litter from the Gorge Road between Highlands and Franklin, the streets within town, and Highway 106. This year Plateau Pickup Day falls on Earth Day, so it’s an especially meaningful way for everyone to celebrate and serve on a local level. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to come out to make this annual event another rousing success. Volunteers will be rewarded with a well-deserved hot dog cookout at nearby Cliffside Lake. What better way to end a morning of hard work than to relax by a cool mountain lake? To participate, meet at the Highlands Visitor Center at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 22. Call Jennifer at the Highlands Chamber of Commerce at (828) 526-2112 to sign up to volunteer. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and the chamber will provide the supplies needed for the task − vests, gloves, litter pick up tools, and garbage bags.

The Bascom’s Collective Spirits celebration, set for June 8-10, offers new twists on this Plateau favorite − the unofficial start of the Highlands Season.

he Bascom’s 11th Annual Collective Spirits: A Celebration of Art, Food and Wine is slated for June 8-10 and promises to be even better than ever. They’re spicing it up this year by introducing craft beer and other spirits to the menu, which will draw even more people to this exciting weekend. The event starts on Thursday, June 8, with the always popular private wine dinners. Each of the 12 dinners is held at a beautiful private home in either Highlands or Cashiers. A famous chef from around the country is stationed at each home with vintners from vineyards from across the country. The vintners and the chef work together to create perfect wine pairings with each course.

The dinners have between five to10 courses, so participants get to taste a variety of the chef’s cuisine and a large sampling of the vineyard’s wine. Friday, June 9, is the Stock Your Cellars Tasting Market at The Bascom. Craft beer, wine, and other spirits will be available for tasting and purchase. Live music and delicious food will be just one of the highlights of the market. The weekend culminates with The Terrace Soiree grand gala on Saturday, June 10. In previous years, the gala has been held offsite, but this year they are bringing it back home to the spectacular setting of The Bascom itself. There will be a silent

auction, a live auction, food, dancing, and lots of excitement. The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts is located at 323 Franklin Road in Highlands and is a not-for-profit charitable entity focused on community outreach, exhibitions, and education. Collective Spirits is their largest fundraiser, which funds their outreach program, and many attendees feel it marks the start of The Season in Highlands. EASTER ON THE GREEN The Village Green’s Easter Weekend is a wondrous mix of reverence and whimsy for the entire community.

he Village Green hosts more than 100 events each year. Many of these enhance the lifestyle of the Cashiers area for residents and visitors alike. Easter Weekend features events that celebrate the hope, renewal, and joy of the Spring holiday. For the first time this year, Cashiers area churches are planning to observe the Stations of the Cross on The Village Green. This walking devotional experience open to residents and visitors in the area features scripture, prayer and reflection to recall the events of Good Friday. Participants will meet at 4:00 P.M. Friday, April 14, at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road in Cashiers. The annual S’More Kids Klothes Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 15, for children 10 years old and under. “Grab your Easter basket and hippity-hoppity over to the Village Play area,” says Ann Self, executive director of The Village Green. Hundreds of treat-filled Easter eggs will be scat-

tered around the park for hunters who will be divided according to age. Activities will also include entertainment, a free lunch, and a visit with the Easter Bunny at The Village Green Commons. The following day on Easter Sunday, churches in Cashiers will conduct the Community Easter Sunrise Service at 7:00 A.M. Sunday, April 16, at the Gazebo and Lawn of The Village Green. Everyone is invited to celebrate Easter with music and scripture as dawn breaks over the mountains. “What a wonderful way to laud the new creation in a such a magnificent, natural setting,” says Self. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

The Village Green provides a beautiful, free public space, however, it’s a nonprofit organization that depends on contributions to maintain the park and provide such an exceptional venue for the community. f you want to support the students at Highlands School and have a great time, sign up now for the Three River Fly Fishing Festival, April 27-29. All proceeds go to the Highlands School Scholarship Fund and sponsorships are encouraged as a way to help out our area youth. Interested in entering a team but don’t know a thing about how to dress or how to cast? Don’t worry, you need not be fully equipped or experienced in the art of fly fishing, this is a festival for novices as well as those who know what they’re doing. You’ll even be able to rent everything you need. On Thursday, April 27, there will be a casting clinic held at Harris Lake in downtown Highlands. During the clinic, which is free and open to the public, novice fishers will be given casting instructions by

experts and more seasoned casters can hone their skills. Event co-chair Hilary Wilkes explains that it’s not meant to be too serious. “This is a fun weekend,” he says. “We don’t give cash awards but have lots of great prizes donated by sponsors and vendors for everything from the most fish caught to the best fish tale, even the ugliest fish. The community has really pitched in to keep expenses minimal, and we really appreciate that.” The fishing will be held on Friday and Saturday and is open to teams of two, with registration at any of the Highland Hiker stores in Highlands or Cashiers. Each team may choose to fish either guided or unguided but must stay within the tournament map’s boundaries which include the

Chattooga, the Cullasaja, and Nantahala Rivers. Teams are encouraged to fish a native stream, a delayed harvest stream, and a hatchery supported stream, and guides are available to hire for any team. Think of all the swag you’ll take home and the tall tales you’ll share! The $500 team entry fee covers streamside lunch both days from Mountain Fresh, an opening night reception at Wolfgang’s Restaurant and Wine Bistro, the closing night winners’ dinner at Cyprus International Cuisine, and happy hour at The Ugly Dog Pub. he 24th annual Tour de Cashiers rolls out on Saturday, April 29 at 8:00 A.M. from The Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center on Frank Allen Road. Riders from across the southeast, and as far away as Idaho, make the pilgrimage to Cashiers for this annual event which has earned a reputation as one of the premier events in the southeast. The fresh mountain air, incredible mountain scenery, and rush of adrenaline afforded by the more than 10,000 feet of elevation change, make this race a favorite. More than 300 cyclists dedicate their day to the challenge of one of several routes: Quarter-Century (25 miles), Metric (62 miles), Century (100 miles). Returning riders will be treated to complementary snacks and beverages at the Ugly Dog Pub on

Frank Allen Road. Pisgah Productions of Asheville will be lending operational support to the event by providing on-course surveillance, expanded rest stops, and en route mechanical assistance. Billy Love’s expansive vision for The Bascom includes the entire communities of Highlands and Cashiers.

recently spoke with Billy Love, artist and education director for The Bascom, about his role in the arts community. We began by defining Art’s function in society, particularly Highlands and Cashiers. “Art is boundless,” he says. “It helps people express their emotions. It can communicate things words cannot. Art can connect cultures, be therapeutic, move us, and make us move. It consoles us, stirs us up, opens doors, boosts our economy, makes us feel good or simply makes us feel.” As education director Love wants to ensure art is accessible to beginning art students, art dilettantes, art supporters, and art professionals. In other words, his mission is to make art part of many people’s lives in a variety of ways. “It makes me feel good to design opportunities, to watch people explore them, and to see their successful results,” he says. He’s done that well and often. The class schedule, with its roster of world-famous artist/teachers, is a boon to Western North Carolina. It puts Highlands in league with big cultural centers around the country.

Under Love’s direction, The Bascom’s artist-in-residence and emerging artist program has a huge ripple effect on the artistic community, particularly with the K-12 afterschool program. Artist-in-residence Byron Tenesaca had an impressive impact on the children’s program. His innovative photographic style fascinated the students. It encouraged vast exploration and discovery, expanding the curriculum to include this new medium. Working with homeschooler Noah Carver, 14, Byron was able to open a door to a burgeoning artist. Now Noah has a new digital camera and his own show at The Bascom on the horizon. Some people in the creative world are artists, but some are artful administrators who see to it that art and artists are supported. Billy Love is a fine artist in that regard, a conduit, channeling assistance to artists and their creations to the world. SUMMER SEASON With a successful winter season receding in the rearview mirror, Highlands Playhouse turns its attention to its exciting 2017 of professional theater.

hat’s a wrap! Our Awards Season film series came to a close in March. We were fortunate enough to host seven of the nine films nominated for Best Picture, as well as seven other films that were nominated in other categories. Thank you so much to all who turned out. We are confident that this award series will become an annual event. We’re ecstatic about the lineup of our 79th Summer Season. Plan to join us for what will almost certainly be an unforgettable series − “Cabaret,” slated for June 22 through July 8; “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, July 13 through 29; “The Fox on the Fairway,” August 3 through 19; and “Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical,” August 24 through September 3. General admission tickets will be offered on April 1 (no kidding). Tickets for our summer live performances are $38 each. Ticket sales make up only about 50 percent of our operation costs, so we rely heavily on patrons who love the arts and want to see it thrive here in Highlands. On that note, we host one annual FUNdraising dinner and auction to raise the funds needed. This year’s Bubbles Event will be held at The Farm at Old Edward’s. pril is a busy month for the Live via Satellite Series at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. On Sunday, April 2 at 12:55 P.M, The PAC presents “Bolshoi Ballet, A Contemporary Evening,” together with Harald Lander’s homage to classical ballet in “Études” and Alexei Ratmansky’s colorful folklore-inspired “Russian Seasons.” “A Contemporary Evening” brings some of the best dancers in the world together with masters of contemporary choreography. PAC will offer the Met Opera’s “Nabucco” at 12:55 P.M. Saturday, April 8. This performance was “snowed out” in January here in Highlands. We received permission to show it at this later date. Met Music Director James Levine conducts Verdi’s early drama of Ancient Babylon, “Nabucco,” with Plácido Domingo adding a new role to his

repertoire as the title character. Liudmyla Monastyrska sings the tour-de-force role of Abigaille, Nabucco’s willful daughter. The Bolshoi Ballet’s “A Hero of Our Time” will be presented Sunday, April 9, at 12:55 P.M. The new ballet score is based on motifs from the Lermontov novel “A Hero of Our Time.” The PAC presents the National Theatre of London’s performance of “Hedda Gabler” at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 15. Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. The Met Opera will stage “Eugene Onegin” at 12:55 P.M. Saturday, April 22. Anna Netrebko reprises one of her most acclaimed roles as Tatiana, the naïve heroine of Tchaikovsky’s opera, adapted from Pushkin’s classic novel. Dmitri Hvorostovsky stars

as the title character, who rejects Tatiana’s love until it’s too late. The month closes with the National Theatre’s staging of “Rosencrantz & Guilderstern are Dead” at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 29. Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take center stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds. The talents of Sculptor Eric Araujo are on full display at The Bascom and throughout the Highlands community.

he first meeting of the Art League of Highlands-Cashiers’ 2017 season will be at 5:00 P.M. Monday, April 24, in The Bascom Atrium, following a 4:30 P.M. wine social. Presenting the program will be Eric Araujo, who began a three-month Sculpture Fellowship at The Bascom in March. Eric Araujo is a working and teaching artist from New York. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice extends across various mediums such as Sculpture, Drawing, and Social practices. Eric received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute and Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. In addition to teaching undergraduate visual arts in New York and New Jersey, Araujo is owner and principal Fabri-

cator at Maven Designs and an Installation Specialist for the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. His work has been shown in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; the di Rosa Preserve in Napa Valley, California; the Canzani Center Gallery at Columbus College of Art and Design; Johannson Projects in Oakland, California; and Present Company in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently his work was included in a group exhibition at BRIC Arts in Downtown Brooklyn. While at The Bascom, Araujo will construct, of reclaimed lumber and steel, three sculptural and functional additions to the Winkler Sculpture and Nature Trail – part of the Highlands Plateau Greenway. His

contributions will include benches and an archway. The Bascom and Greenway are seeking financial assistance from members of the community to underwrite the cost of materials. WHEN SILVER SPEAKS BY DONNA RHODES

For artist Melanie Miller, spotlighted at Smitten, her work is a blending of hard-won lessons and an almost mystical intuition.

hen Melanie Miller sank her eager fingers into silver clay for the first time, it was joy at first touch. Her love affair with that medium has lasted 12 years and shows no signs of waning. Lucky Melanie, lucky us, for on April 20 she and her work will be the main feature at Smitten’s monthly Third Thursday event. A self-taught clay-sculpturist, she owes her creative aptitude to a talented coal miner dad who excelled as a bluegrass musician. Her mother took care of their seven kids, occupying them with inventive craft projects and inspired excursions into the land of imagination. Melanie’s work is unique, each piece a triumph of skillful design and thoughtful inscription. Her medium, silver clay, is fairly new to the art world. “Silver clay is pure silver particles infused in a clay binder,” she says. “I fire my handsculpted landscapes, pendants, charms, etc. at 1650 degrees. The moisture and

binder burn out, leaving a beautiful pure silver product.” She is most proud of her silver landscapes. She meticulously inscribes meaningful quotes on each piece, sometimes the choice of the buyer, but often words of personal heroes. The Highlands Performing Arts Center’s concert calendar is filled with music, dance, and a healing dose of laughter.

he Highlands Performing Arts Center’s 2017 Concert Season begins Saturday, June 17, with the PAC Gala featuring an all-new show by The Hit Men 2.0. The concert begins at 5:00 P.M. and the Gala Dinner at 7:00 P.M. at Highlands Falls Country Club. The Hit Men is a supergroup comprised of vocalists who either played, sang or performed with some of the biggest stars of the era, featured on songs like “Who Loves You,” “Oh What a Night,” “The Locomotion,” “Peace Train,” “Mony Mony,” and “Joy to the World.” Saturday, June 24, brings bluegrass at its finest back to PAC with Seldom Scene. On April 22, this longtime pillar of the bluegrass world will debut a new CD with the aptly titled “Long Time…Seldom Scene.” The new CD features 16 oft-requested

tunes and is the band’s first studio album since the Grammy-nominated album “Scenechronized” in 2007. The PAC Youth Theater’s production of “The Frog Prince,” set for April 28-30, represents the flowering of an ambitious program helmed by Megan Potts.

he Highlands Performing Arts Center announces the appointment of Megan Greenlee Potts as Artistic Director of the PAC Youth Theater. Potts’ predecessor, Dr. Ronnie Spilton, now shares her time between Highlands and Savannah with her husband Curt. Potts has been Dr. Spilton’s assistant for many years; and has years of technical and acting experiences, including a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in Technical Theater and Acting. She has already initiated several new classes for the Youth Theater program − Technical Theater Lab Class (a hands-on class focusing on the use of lighting and electronics in theater); Acting 1 Class (studying act-

With “The Frog Prince,” Mamet turns his considerable talents to the age-old children’s story of the prince who is turned into a frog and must find a pure and honest woman to kiss him of her own free will. The Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival will spotlight the genius of cellist Zuill Bailey during its exquisite 36th season.

he Highland-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival is presenting its 36th season June 25 through August 6. The regular concert series are held Fridays and Saturdays at the Highlands Performing Arts Center and Saturdays and Mondays at the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library. A featured artist this season is cellist Zuill Bailey, 2017 winner of two Grammy Awards and considered one of the premier cellists in the world. Bailey will be performing during the final weekend of the festival, August 4 and 5, and will headline the Final Gala on August 6. Bailey received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the Juilliard School. He performs on the Rosette 1693 Matteo Gofriller Cello, formerly owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest String Quartet. In addition to his extensive touring engagements, he is the Artistic Director of El Paso Pro-Musica in Texas, the Sitka Summer Music Festival/Series and Cello Seminar in Alaska, the Northwest Bach Festival in Washington, Guest Artistic Director of the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona, and Professor of Cello at the University of Texas at El Paso. Bailey was named the 2014 Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumni and was awarded the Classical Recording Foundation Award for 2006 and 2007 for Beethoven’s complete works for Cello and Piano. An internationally renowned recording artist, Bailey won Grammy Awards for “Tales of Hemingway” and is honored for Best Solo Performance, plus Best Contemporary Classical Composition and Best Compendium again for Tales of Hemingway. The Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival’s regular series concerts and special events have become a highlight of the season on the Plateau. This, its 36th season, will feature many familiar favorites as well as newcomers and tickets may be purchased for the entire season or for individual concerts. Donna Cochran’s myriad tasks for Highlands Cashiers Players mirror the development of this cherished Plateau institution.

onna Cochran has been part of the Highlands Cashiers Players since its first production, “Steel Magnolias,” in which she played the role of Ouiser. At that time, the organization was known as Highlands Community Players and Cochran has seen many things, in addition to the name, change since 1995. “My father used to say, ‘That which does not change dies,’ and HCP has indeed come a long way from holding shows in the Community Building,” Cochran says. “But as an organization we have made a two-decade commitment to producing Good Plays, Well Done.” The first full length show she directed was the melodrama “Caught in the Villain’s Web.” She has also directed Neil Simon’s “Rumors,” parts of “The Dining Room,” and “You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running.” One of her most cherished directorial memories was when

she directed “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” which starred her daughter, Katie. Most recently she was the director of “Welcome to Mitford,” which boasted a cast of 23. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened) 2 eggs (room temperature) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoon coconut extract 1/2 cup coconut milk 14 oz shredded sweetened coconut Bag of jellybeans 1 recipe of Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting

For Taylor Crawford, a lifetime of learning and a healthy imagination have led her to the sweet title of Cupcake Queen.

“

Cupcakes are just a little gift that can brighten any day,” explains local chef Taylor Crawford. You could say that she’s come upon her talents naturally, but there’s plenty of trial and error in her background, and maybe a touch of magic. “I learned to cook from my mom, sometimes my great-grandmother. Just little things here and there,” she says. “But what really inspired me was this book called “Kitchen Princess,” about a character who loved to bake. Her philosophy was – Cooking for others is the way to show you care about them. It’s a gift to share.” When Taylor was given free rein in her Blue Ridge School Home Economics kitchen, she found out for herself just how right that book had been. She turned out a dizzying array of cakes and cupcakes for friends and teachers and soon developed a reputation for daring recipes that extended far beyond the confines of the school. Baking is exacting, so improvisation demands a long process of experimentation. “You can’t just add peanut butter to a chocolate cupcake recipe and end up with Chocolate-Peanut Butter Cupcakes. At least nothing that anyone would want to eat,” she says. “You have to be patient and willing to try and try again. But when you get it right, you get something magical.” In a short span, she’s developed ecstasy-inducing recipes for things like Lemon Blackberry Cupcakes topped with Blackberry Butter Frosting, Bananas Foster Cupcakes, and Grasshopper Pie Cupcakes. All of which brings us to the 2017 Cashiers Library Chocolate Cookoff, which featured offerings by chefs, caterers and professional party organizers. Out of the this field of over 25 entrants, Taylor took top honors for her White Chocolate Raspberry Cupcakes, the first time a white chocolate recipe had been so recognized. Instructions: In a separate bowl combine flour and baking soda with a whisk and set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and coconut extracts until combined. Alternate flour mixture and coconut milk until it makes a semi thick batter. Do not over beat. Fold in 1 cup of shredded coconut. Set the rest of the bag aside. Divide between 22 cupcake liners and fill 3/4 full. Bake between 15-18 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Set on cooling rack and cool before frosting.

Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients: 8 oz. cream cheese (room temperature) 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter (room temperature) 2 Tablespoons coconut extract 2 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar 1 Tablespoon coconut curd Instructions Cream cream cheese and butter with a hand held mixture until combined. Add coconut extract and or coconut curd one tablespoon at a time. Add confectioner’s sugar 1/2 cup at time, mixing slowly to not send sugar everywhere. Keeping mixing until mixture is light or fluffy. Keeping adding sugar to your desired consistency. With a circular tip and your frosting bag, fill with frosting. Pierce tip into cupcake and squeeze gently to fill with frosting. Afterward create a large dollop of frosting on top of cupcake.

There are many misconceptions about the much-maligned wine and you’ll receive a comprehensive education when Advanced Sommelier Nick Demos takes the floor. Don’t worry, there will be no tests, just lots of outstanding food, wines, and live music. What will you find at the dinner? Well, it won’t be pink André or that dreaded sugary white zin of the 1970s. Many different types of rosés are being made worldwide, and the taste really depends on the wine’s country of origin. The variety of shades comes from the length of time the wines are in contact with red grape skins. Just like its red or white counterparts, rosés are more versatile than you may think. You can use them in cocktails and drink them with barbecue or salad. There are no rules! The resurgence in its popularity here in the US began roughly five years ago, and in France it’s believed that sales of rosés surpass that of

red or white. Sommelier Nick Demos will be present to discuss the different pairings and educate diners on the joys of rosés. Nick, a native of Western North Carolina, has been immersed in wine culture since an early age. His grandfather opened the very first wine shop in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, just after prohibition. In July of 2016, Mr. Demos passed the ever-challenging Advanced Sommelier exam through the Court of Master Sommeliers. He is currently pursuing his studies as a candidate for the Master Sommelier diploma. Curt unravels The Mystery of Aging Wine that Still Seems Young.

hen I entered the wine business 26 years ago, I immediately found that people are looking for others that they think will have the capacity to appreciate and enjoy their older wine treasures. Many assumed I would be a worthy candidate. Typically, I would be given a taste of a 30-35-year-old Bordeaux. The color was usually a brickish red and nearly clear around the edge. The aromas were subtly sublime. The wines usually were devoid of any weight or viscosity. The flavors were muted and focused more on the earthy, herbal, and not so much on fruit. They were usually on the verge of being dried out and tart. Overall was I impressed with the wines considering their age. The aromatics usually seemed to outlive the flavors. Would

I want to enjoy the wine with dinner? No. Although the wines were impressive for their age, they were wines to taste and admire, not to Drink. Fast forward 26 years. I have noticed a change in these wines of the same age, many of the same chateau. These wines seem younger in every aspect. Maybe Bordeaux has started using sulfites. I’ll give you a moment to stop laughing. The color is deeper all the way to the rim, the aromas are not as subtle, but lovely nonetheless. But the texture has drastically changed. The wine still hugs the glass and your taste buds as well. The flavors are generous and show muted notes of red fruit, as well as earth and spice. They have all for the most part maintained a sense of balance.

So, I must ask myself, why? The first clues are on the labels. The alcohol content in these wines has increased from one to nearly four percent. The other, rather disappointing fact, is that nearly all the chateau that I tasted 26 years ago, now have the same “consultant.” The only continent he doesn’t have any clients is Antarctica. So, it comes back to the age-old question of nature or nurture. Though all change is not bad. If you like your aged wines the way they used to taste you’ll just have to wait another decade, or just buy them precellared. If you’re a fan of the new style, then there are good things ahead. Using only the freshest ingredients, Billy Leonard’s Guacamole and Salsa are a slice of paradise for the palate.

man of many talents and interests, the common thread through Billy Leonard’s life is education. He is on the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, has a ministry, he is writing a book, and now is a Certified Health Coach. He and his wife Yen Ling, grow much of their own produce and their three daughters think it’s great fun to harvest their salads. While Yen Ling cooks a lot of traditional Taiwanese foods, Billy leans toward a more basic meal, easy to prepare, and without sugars and starches. Does this mean his food is boring? Far from it. Using fresh herbs and produce, he can whip up a tasty dish in no time. When he was asked for a recipe, Billy laughs. “Most of my meals are really simple,” he says. “Prior to my food shift five years ago, I ate unhealthy Mexican food at least two to three times per week. Now I get to enjoy the flavor of Mexican food without the pain of it.” He makes guacamole and salsa from scratch. He then cooks a thin steak with lime juice, salt, and pepper. He will cut the steak into small squares, then put a dab of guacamole on top, then a jalapeño on top of that, then a dab of salsa on top of that, and top it off with a cilantro leaf.

Instructions Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. In a medium (8-inch) cast iron or oven-safe non-stick skillet, lightly sautĂŠ the chopped onions in a bit of olive oil for 3-4 minutes. Blend the eggs, cream, salt and pepper in a blender until combined and lightly foamy. Coat the skillet with olive oil. Pour in the eggs, the onions and the cheeses. Put the skillet in the oven, and bake for 20 minutes or until the edges of the frittata are golden brown and the eggs are set. Top with chopped tarragon. Let cool before slicing.

The showy azalea is a natural for a landscaped yard, but it really shines in the wild forest.

eing from South Carolina, spring evokes memories of billowing azaleas, like rainbow-colored clouds floating across the fresh new green of the season. Who knew, just three hours north to these beautiful mountains spring would be so different? Although azaleas can grow in the higher elevations (there are some at 5,000 feet on the Blue Ridge Parkway), we have to be choosy where we put them, and even then, they may not be as prolific as the gardening magazines. The difference, of course, is that I grew up around hybrid azaleas. I don’t think I’d ever heard of native azaleas before living in the Nantahala National Forest. The first one I met was the Flame Azalea − striking any time, but when you’re looking into a midst of brown deciduous trees’ brown leaves and brownish-gray trunks − the orange “flame” really stands out. I thought it was a honeysuckle at first glance. Flame azaleas range in color from a pale yellow to a deep crimson red. We also have the elusive white native

azaleas (arborescens), and according to Wikipedia, they can grow up to 20 feet tall. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the hybrid azaleas you can buy in almost any color of the rainbow, but there’s something about a flowering shrub in the middle of the forest that’s there because that’s where God intended (talk about a Master Gardener!). These azaleas didn’t fall too far from the family tree − they’re in the same genus family as the rhododendron. According to the Azalea Society of America (azaleas.org), all azaleas are either species (aka native) or hybrids, and azaleas have been hybridized for hundreds of years with over 10,000 registered names. All North American azaleas are deciduous, but there is an azalea in Japan that is evergreen that comes in almost every color except yellow. Whether you enjoy hybrids or the natural beauty of the native azaleas, you have to admit the simple beauty of its flower is a sight to behold.

The Catbird, sporting slate gray plumage, has a slow warbling song that is varied and hoarse including higher notes, chips and squeaks. Most likely to be recognized by its distinctive call, the Catbird lives up to its name with its clear, catlike mewing: mwee and meeurr.

THE SLATE-COLORED DARK-EYED JUNCO BY WILLIAM MCREYNOLDS

The enigmatic Junco is a proud year-round resident of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

he Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) is a ground-dwelling sparrow often seen hopping around on the forest floor, flying low between shrubs and Rhododendron bushes and even skittering around our feet. It is recognizable by its dark gray back, white belly, and two long outer tail feathers that flash bright white in flight. Juncos emit a sharp “chip…chip…chip” which seems to come out of nowhere and everywhere at the same time. They feed and breed in coniferous and mixed forests, can be seen foraging in the fallen leaves, and are opportunistic visitors to our bird feeders, both seed and suet types.

This bird is seen year-round on the Highlands Plateau. Some stay with us all year and others migrate to Canada for the summer and return to the lower 48 in the winter. There are six subspecies of Junco, the most common being the Slate-colored Darkeyed Junco in our area and in the Eastern United States (pictured above) and the Oregon Junco in the Western states. Our most populous winter bird, last December 565 Dark-eyed Junco (over 25 percent of the total) were seen in the Highlands area during Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count. They nest on or just a few feet above the ground. The female incubates the clutch

of three to five eggs, which hatch in 11 to 13 days. Both female and male feed the hatchlings that fledge nine to 13 days after hatching. Their diet consists of seeds and insects as well as spring and summer caterpillars and spiders. The mission of the Highlands Plateau Audubon Society is to provide opportunities to enjoy and learn about birds and other wildlife and to promote conservation and restoration of the habitats that support them. There’s always a trout out there waiting for you. You just have to understand regulations governing hatcherysupported streams.

eing a fly fishing outfitter in town for over 30 years, we’ve answered a lot of questions concerning where to fish, how to fish, and what to fish with, but the most frequently asked question over the years has to be “When is trout season?” There is a common misconception about the time of year an angler is able or even allowed to fish for trout on a stream. The reason for the confusion related to “trout season” is caused by more than a few different designations of fishable water such as wild trout water, hatchery-supported water, delayed harvest sections, wild trout natural bait regulated water, catch and release ar-

tificial flies-regulated water, as well as your catch and release artificial lures regulations. However, the only one that restricts fishing during set times - thus being the designation that causes the most confusion about “seasons” is the hatchery-supported designation. A good, and very local, example of hatchery-supported water is the Cullasaja River that runs along US 64 West. March is the month that the State of North Carolina stocks the river full of fish. The state then closes it down to anglers from the first of the month to the first Saturday in April. This allows the fish to have time to move up or downstream and get acclimated to

their new home. Wild trout water, delayed harvest sections, wild trout natural bait, catch and release, artificial flies, and catch and release artificial lure designated water are open year-around and have different rules and regulations, which you can always determine by going to NCwildlife.org. So, the answer is quite easy – It’s always trout season, it’s only the accessibility of certain waters that are determined by their designation that can change. No one wants to turn back the Tide! The arrival of electricity made life in the mountains so much easier.

hen you finish reading this article, you’ll hug your washing machine. The majority of mountain families didn’t get electricity hooked up until after World War II. I’ve used two sources for this article, one being advice given to a new bride from her Kentucky grandmother and another being the memories of an Appalachian man. The Kentucky grandmother wrote the following instructions. Note: This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook with spelling errors and all. 1. Bilt fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. 2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. 3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water. 4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white. 1 pile colored. 1 pile work britches and rags. 5. To make starch, stir in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water. 6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard and then bile. Rub colored, don’t just rinch and starch. 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch and starch. 8. Hang old rags on fence. 9. Spread tea towels on grass. 10. Pore rinch water in flower bed. 11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. 12. Turn tubs upside down. 13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings. The Mountain man heeded his advice, “Washing and Ironing Were Laborious Tasks.” “Wash day chores began with making sure there was enough wood cut, split, and carried to the backyard to heat the water. My parents would fill a wash tub about half full of water where it ran out of a pipe at the end of the spring box. Washing required 3 tubs of water. One hot, one warm, and the other one cold water. The wash bench was made by turning 3 chairs on their backs and placing 2 boards strong enough to hold the tubs on the chairs. First were the white clothes and sheets. “Next were the colored clothes with the towels and washcloths washed last. The scrub board was used in the hot water to scrub the clothes clean. The warm water was the first rinse and cold water was for the last rinse. Starch was used as necessary and the starched clothes were hung out on the clothes lines along with the other items. If it was a rainy day, lines were strung in the house. “When dried the starched clothes had to be sprinkled down with water and rolled into a ball ready for ironing. 3 flat irons were used for ironing. First the bottoms of the irons were cleaned. A fire had to be kept going in the cook stove. One iron was placed on the hottest part of the stove, the 2nd iron on a slightly cooler spot and the 3rd iron on a warm spot. As the irons were used they had to be reheated by placing them back on the stove. Wash day and ironing got much easier after we got electricity in 1952.”

When he saw Eva approaching, he turned beet red and burbled an immediate in-Jemus-nam-amum. And that, dear parishioners, is the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but . . . When Billy Potts was minister of the Highlands Baptist Church in the late 1920s and 30s, he delivered such moving sermons that his words often brought him to tears. Marshall Reese, ten-ish at the time, asked his mama why Reverend Potts cried in the pulpit? Mrs. Reese replied that it was probably because the Reverend was thinking about all the bad things he had done in his life. Perhaps that was a sermon within a sermon for Marshall as he sat reflecting on his own previous decade. But Reverend Potts, a spirited man filled with passion and compassion, could laugh as energetically as he could cry. Terry Potts, Reverend Potts’ great-grandson says, “His sense of humor, particularly his penchant for punning, won him fame if not fortune in his travels on horseback for over 1,500 miles a month as a circuit-riding minister across Macon and Jackson Counties and well-

he new Emergency Department at the HighlandsCashiers Hospital is nearing completion and is expected to open in May. As the excitement builds, the staff anxiously await their new home. Cindy Pierson, Interim CNO for the hospital, is proud to report she’s been involved in the planning since June 2015. “I, along with other clinical team members, have had input regarding layout of patient rooms, team work spaces, and supply areas,” she says. She’s also been involved with decisions on new equipment for Emergency Department patient rooms. The staff was asked to provide clinical input regarding the design of specialty rooms (a Safe Room for behavioral health patients, isolation room, etc.) that will make the new space better for patients and staff that will be working there. The ED will have all private rooms that will allow for patient privacy. Every room will now have cardiac monitors. Each room will have computer stations to allow for bedside charting by nurses. There will be new “specialty rooms” that will allow for specialized care for certain patient populations, including a SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examination) Room for victims of sexual assault and a Safe Room with special modifications to monitor and treat behavioral health patients who may be at risk for harming themselves or others. “Additionally, we will have a decontamination room for any patients that may have been exposed to hazardous materials,” says Pierson. Why should Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Mission Health invest in a new ED? As Pierson explains, “The strategy for success for rural hospitals is built upon three bases: strong primary care; great diagnostics; and great emergency department services. By investing in a new ED here at HCH, we’re able to provide excellent care in a more efficient manner. The new space will allow us to better manage patient flow, provide improved patient privacy, and support ongoing quality care and treatment of our patients when they require services of our ED.” With the expected “go live” date fast approaching, stay tuned for news about tours to see how HighlandsCashiers Hospital is growing and changing to meet the needs of our community.

THE ELBOW-ITS MANY USES AND INJURIES! BY DR. SUE AERY AERY CHIROPRACTIC & ACUPUNCTURE

The humble elbow is the linchpin to a happy productive life. Treat it with care and common sense.

he elbow is the connecting joint between the hand and shoulder. Yes, we all know that! The elbow joint is important in many ways for movement, leverage and lifting. Whether you’re an athlete or not, the elbow’s function is very important in assisting the hand in dynamic movement. The wrist is basically to help with fine motor skills of the hand and fingers but the elbow is designed to provide leverage with its levers and pulleys of muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones. Rotation of the hand, also called supination and pronation, is also a vital function that the elbow performs. The main muscles that move the elbow are the biceps and triceps, which also attach to the shoulder. Injuries to any of

these muscles will undoubtedly end up including elbow pain. Golf, tennis and throwing sports can lead to overuse injuries of the tendons and ligaments, commonly known as Tennis Elbow and Golf Elbow. Tendonitis occurs when the injury causes inflammation and the tendon pulls away from the bone. Ligament injury can cause instability and significant pain as well as inflammation. And then there is the Funny Bone, a very surface level nerve called the Ulnar Nerve, which can often become inflamed with use and overuse. Many approaches exist for healing and prevention of future injury. A few of these include acupuncture, ultrasound therapy, massage and drug intervention to reduce pain and inflammation. It’s also a good

idea to remove the causative factor long enough for the healing to take place and strength and balance to be restored. Healing takes time mainly because of the demand on this joint for our daily needs and chores. The hand is essential to our daily mode of operation, and most people find it very hard to curtail its use! Be patient with the healing but do take care of it so that you will have full use in the future. It is also important to establish and maintain muscular balance as well as strength and length. Stretching and strengthening are two major components of rehabilitation in order to prevent subsequent injury! Remember that the elbow allows you to eat and drink so let it heal and keep it well!

hrough the ages, many branches of yoga and meditation have developed and from those branches various styles have been established. The science of yoga offers bodily cleansing techniques and guidelines for how we expend our energy through behaviors and thoughts, offering many ways to center the mind in focus. Vipassana meditation is one example. Unlike other mediations that suggest gently focusing on the breath, the third eye, or the space slightly to the right of the heart, this meditation technique is a process of selfdiscovery in which you observe your own experiences while participating in them as they occur. As humans, we are biologically programmed to think ALL THE TIME. With kindness and compassion toward ourselves, we begin to develop the witness consciousness. We begin to experience “Ourselves” as the “Observer” of our experiences, feelings, thoughts, emotions and our ego, the

map that we have constructed to make sense of our reality. Meditation is not a technique but rather a state of mind that follows the development of single focus. It does not require or exclude any spiritual beliefs at all, and does not teach any belief about god or the universe, but instead provides a platform for allowing the experience of your own truth to arise. The practices of both yoga and meditation are not about teaching blind faith or mandating certain behaviors but lead you to potentially transformational experiences. If nothing else, they are a process of rewiring the brain to create space between experience and action or response. There is endless wealth in these rich practices. In any case, the objective is to bring our usually outward focus inward, and unify body and mind, developing strength of focus, and beginning to find the spaces between the thoughts.

Buffeted by Big Blows, Donna’s life is marked by Unforgettable Years.

efore 1953, meteorologists tracked tropical storms and hurricanes by year and the order in which they appeared. Sometimes three or four storms simultaneously churned. Seven decades ago storm warnings were hit-or-miss (not unlike today): “This big blowy one might hit here, here, or here.” the meteorologist would say, slapping his pointer on Guatemala, Miami, and Galveston. “And this walloper that covers half the Atlantic…well…it’s anybody’s guess.” To make things more manageable, meteorologists began naming storms after women…her-icanes. Some of us took femalenamings personally. I thought I’d never live down 1960’s “Horror-cane” Donna (a name

86 | April 2017 | thelaurelmagazine.com

now retired, thank goodness). In 1979, in the interest of equality, him-icanes using men’s names alternated with her-icanes. Eventually winter storms had their own christenings. Now every ripple in the jet stream seems to have a moniker. The worse the storm, the more likely its name is to be retired. Though most of my life has chugged along swimmingly, I’ve had some stormy years. In the spirit of storm-naming, I have christened my maelstrom years with names I intend to retire. In 1952 a car squashed my cocker spaniel. That is the first, worst year of my life. I named it Atrocia. 1957, AKA Beelzebubba, Lester, my pet pheasant, came to a fowl end. His demise was on the heels of a move initiat-

ing a socially crippling avalanche of school transfers, seven in all, from first grade to 12th. Those transfer years have nicknames, though they weren’t rotten enough to retire. Skipping ahead to 1959, Hormonella (selfexplanatory). 1963 Kluster, Granny passed. Other years of note are Narcissus and Pandemania, the years of divorce. And finally, 2016, Tor-Peedo. The week before my mom departed, my house sold. I joined the land of the motherless and homeless, pushing around a yowling cat in a shopping cart filled with random cardboard boxes. But I don’t despair. 2017 could initiate a super-year trend. I look forward to smashing a bottle of bubbly across its bow. It shall be named, Amazy.

pring is in the air, and it’s the time to contemplate your life with a fresh attitude. This year, as you shake off the cobwebs from winter and start tidying up around your home and yard, why not also do some financial spring cleaning? Actually, you can apply several traditional spring cleaning techniques to your financial situation. Here are a few ideas: • Look for damage. Damage to your home’s siding, shingles, and foundation can eventually degrade the structure of your home. Your investment portfolio is also a structure of a sort, and it, too, can be damaged. Specifically, you may have deliberately constructed your portfolio with an investment mix – stocks, fixed-income vehicles, cash instruments, etc. – that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But over time, your portfolio can evolve in unexpected ways. For example, your stocks may have grown so much in value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a higher degree of risk. If this happens, you may need to rebal-

ance your portfolio. • Get rid of “clutter.” As you look around your home, do you see three mops or four nonfunctional televisions or a stack of magazines from the 1990s? If these items no longer have value, you could get rid of them and clear up some living space. As an investor, you also might have “clutter” in the form of investments that no longer meet your needs. If you sold these investments, you could use the proceeds to fill gaps in your portfolio. • Consolidate. Do you keep your lawnmower in a shed, a rake in your garage, and your gardening tools in the basement? When working on your outdoor tasks, you might find it more efficient to have all these items in one location. You could also have your investments scattered about – an IRA here, a new 401(k) there, and an older 401(k) someplace else. But if you consolidated all your investments in one place, you might cut down on paperwork and fees, and you wouldn’t risk losing track of an asset (which actually happens more than you might think). Even more importantly, when you have all your investments with one

provider, you’ll be better positioned to follow a single, centralized investment strategy. • Prepare for a rainy day. As part of your outdoor spring cleaning, you may want to look at your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear and in good repair, so that they can move rainwater away from your home. Your financial goals need protection, too, so you’ll want to ensure you have adequate life and disability insurance. • Seal leaks. In your home inspection this spring, you may want to investigate doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Your investment portfolio might have some “leaks” also. Are investment-related taxes siphoning off more of your earnings than you realize? A financial professional can offer you recommendations for appropriate tax-advantaged investments. This spring, when you’re cleaning your physical surroundings, take some time to also tidy up your financial environment. You may be pleased with the results. Colette Clark’s passion for ceramics has found its full-flowering at The Bascom.

olette Clark is an artist in the truest sense of the word. Her talents and experience in the art world include stitching, quilting, painting (both oil and water based), drawing, and clay. She says that clay has been the one constant over the last 50 plus years and this led her to become a volunteer at The Bascom’s Pottery Barn. She was a ceramic and sculpture major at the University of Georgia, “Way back when.” Her husband is a former Marine so they found themselves constantly on the move, but she says, “I always had my hands in something art-related.” After moving to Highlands 14 years ago, she immediately sought out The Bascom. At that time it was located in the Hudson Library on Main Street. It was when Frank Vickery became the director of the ceramics program that her cursory volunteering at The Bascom became a serious commitment. Frank Vickery, currently the Director of Ceramics at The Bascom, was finishing his Master’s Degree at Western Carolina University and asked Colette if she would cover the barn in his absence. She says, “So I became a sort of fixture in the barn. If Frank wasn’t there, I was, and I was a lot of the times he was there.” That was five years ago and she still spends

a great deal of time at the barn by helping with instruction and assisting when there are large groups of students. She also helps in maintaining the space and ordering supplies, and generally assisting wherever she can. She does have a studio at home so isn’t at The Bascom every day but says, “It’s where you’ll find me if I’m not at home.” She encourages everyone to be a part of the Bascom, even if you don’t consider yourself an artist. “I’ve taken workshops, painting lessons, and even a wood turning workshop!” “There are so many opportunities at the Bascom,” she says enthusiastically. Local gardeners can boost the fortunes of The Food Pantry of Highlands and the larders of their neighbors.

alling all gardeners or would-be gardeners! The Food Pantry of Highland is offering you an opportunity to play in the dirt and help their clients, too. Executive Director Marty Rosenfield is once again extending the Host Farmer Program to a few lucky people. Through the Host Farmer Program, instigated last year, the pantry will provide growers with vegetable plants; participants will then tend the plants and share the harvest with the Food Pantry. This not only gives their clients fresh produce that might not otherwise be available, but it provides a bounty of benefits to the farmer. If you already garden then you know

what this means − fresh and nutritious veggies that are from your very own land, not trucked in from parts unknown. If you’re the parent of young ones, having children assist in gardening can increase the chances they’ll eat more vegetables (maybe you’ll eat more, too). Gardening not only saves the grower money but helps build a sense of community as you share what you’ve grown with others who are not able to do so. It’s just one of the ways you can help this vital organization fight food insecurity right here in Highlands. The Food Pantry of Highlands serves the community and in 2016 met the needs of over 4,000 clients during that 12-month pe-

riod. These people depend on the pantry to supplement their grocery budgets and many have small children to feed. It is staffed totally by volunteers who serve in many capacities. There are those who distribute goods on Monday afternoons and those that help stock the shelves. There are those who help unload the trucks and those who fill bags with rice and beans. “I am so thankful to all these folks and I look forward to meeting new volunteers,” says Rosenfield. Thanks to a dedicated army of supporters, volunteers and staff members, Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society has saved the lives of thousands of animals over the course of 30 years.

he entire collection of Beatles songs were released on a new audio medium known as “compact discs.” A new national television network named Fox had its debut. “Into the Woods” premiered on Broadway. Paul Newman won the Oscar for Best Actor in the movie “The Color of Money.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 2,000 for the first time. A first-class postage stamp cost 22 cents, and a gallon of regular gas was less than a dollar. In a speech in Berlin, President Reagan proclaimed, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” The year was 1987 and the Cashiers Area Humane Society (later re-named the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society) was born. For the past 30 years, CHHS has saved the lives and found forever homes for thousands of abandoned, abused, and neglected animals in our community. In recent years, the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society has earned the prestigious designation of Emergency Placement Partner with the Humane Society of the United States, one of less than 300 nationwide and one of only four in North Carolina with large-scale transport capabilities. Last year, we opened the CHHS Canine Adoption Center, the most modern

animal welfare facility in Western North Carolina. All of these life-saving efforts were made possible by the visionary founders of CHHS who realized back in the 1980s that so much more had to be done for animals in need on the Plateau. Carrying forward that vision into reality for the past three decades have been our cherished and valued donors and supporters, our compassionate volunteers, and our dedicated animal-loving Board members and staff. From a modest beginning in 1987, CHHS is now a regional Humane Society, rescuing nearly 500 animals annually at our 10-acre no-kill shelter. We also bring people and pets together through our innovative community outreach programs such as low-cost spay/neuter, pet therapy, pet food pantry, and humane education. ur local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina in Cashiers is ecstatic to announce that our local mentor, Lynne Keating, has been named Big Sister of the Year for the state of North Carolina. Experiencing new things and expanding horizons are common benefits of mentoring. Lynne has been a champion for Sophie, encouraging and nudging her gently to spread her wings and set her sights high. Their relationship has blossomed with time, and through that, Sophie has become a more independent, confident, vocal, and successful young woman. When they were first matched over three years ago, Sophie’s interest in art quickly became clear to Lynne, who found an opportunity to nurture that nascent talent with

frequent trips to The Bascom. With Lynne’s help, Sophie is now enrolled in a private school that is continuing to help her develop her artistic talents, while also providing her opportunities for leadership and project collaboration. “Not only has Lynne helped me immensely these past couple of years, she’s proven to be an amazing friend,” says Sophie, “She’s never spoken to me as if I were a child. She’s always honest and willing to discuss, which is something I greatly appreciate. I think without Lynne, I wouldn’t have been pushed to go out of my comfort zone in many situations, and I don’t think I would have progressed this much as a person without her.” Not only has Lynne committed herself to being an engaged and active member

of Sophie’s life, she has also taken on BBBS leadership roles in Cashiers. With her efforts and leadership, the Council has gained new members, become more active and focused, raised funds to implement group and enrichment activities and become more present in the community through partnerships with businesses. Lynne has been instrumental in the success of this young program whose advisory council constitutes a small, yet mighty board. Although this is not the only board Lynne serves on, her commitment and enthusiasm for BBBS would lead you to believe she devotes all of her energies to making our program successful and impactful for the youth in our community. The National Big of the Year Selection Committee will announce the National Big of the Year this month.

n the evening of Valentine’s Day, Friends for Life staffers visited a local retirement home with two of our canine residents. On a day dedicated to love, what could be better than bringing together senior pets with senior residents? The time we spent was meant to honor the bond between, not just pets and humans, but the very special relationship seniors have with their animal companions. At our Forever Farm, a significant portion of our senior and special needs population are sadly, reluctantly, surrendered to us by elderly owners. In most cases,

these owners are facing the challenges of caring for themselves during their twilight years. These challenges can be financial as well as medical. As many seniors face these difficult changes: downsizing homes, moving in with their children, or making the move to retirement communities, they are also confronted with the agonizing decision of what to do with their beloved pets. In many cases, these pets have been a primary source of companionship for their elderly human. They’ve been the difference between a life of love and friendship, and a life of loneliness. In some cas-

es, they’re the reason that senior gets out of bed in the morning. So it is with a great sense of responsibility that we care for these pets when their owner no longer can. We are proud to offer a retirement home to those loving companions. It’s also why we were proud to visit the residents of that retirement center with two of our furry residents on Valentine’s Day. The blessing of good, clean mountain water is threatened by multiple factors. The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust is working to preserve this remarkable resource.

doubt many would argue that having clean water is important to people and healthy ecosystems. We have an abundance of water here in the Highlands-Cashiers area, having the second highest rainfall in the United States. This high rainfall, coupled with our steep slopes, means we also have more waterfalls than most. Our clean water also means we have some fine trout fishing streams − in fact, some consider the Tuckasegee River one of the best trout streams in the U.S. Our abundance of water, coupled with the shallow soils on our mountains, means that we do not have very large groundwater reservoirs such as you find on the coastal plain to our east. That means our water doesn’t stay here long but finds itself in our

streams and rivers pretty quickly after it falls from the sky. Those waters eventually wind up in some six different major rivers and both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The major contaminant in our waters turns out to be sediment primarily from ground disturbing activities such as houses and roads. Our second water problem is not so obvious – it’s increased water temperature. When we open up our stream side forests so we can view the stream we are also exposing them to extra sunlight that warms up the water. This also occurs when we make ponds or lakes. Warmer water makes it difficult for the insects that trout depend upon to survive and as a result we impact our trout populations. Impoundments like ponds and lakes also restrict the

movement of stream fishes. Protecting water quality is a conservation priority for the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust. We do this by protecting streams from development within our conservation easements and fee simple properties. All streams have 100-foot forested buffers where possible and only minimal disturbance is allowed. Now more than ever, it is critical that we protect our valuable land resources for all generations. The bond between horses and girls and women is deep and almost mystical. Carpe Diem Farms nurtures this special relationship.

here is something special between a girl and a horse. A certain percentage of the population is magically drawn to these glorious creatures. For me, it began at age three with a horse named “Rattler,” a very patient cow pony belonging to a neighbor. For his owner, age seven; my five-year-old brother; and me, he was a babysitter of sorts. He spent long summer days with the three of us aboard, wandering among the cows, pastures, and neighborhood. It began my love affair and deep connection with horses. He and the 24 horses since, have known my deepest secrets. They have shared my joy and my sorrow and because of what they have taught me, Carpe Diem Farms was created. We have spent the past 25 years sharing the miracle that is the horse

with children of all ages through our equine experiential programs. What we have done in after-school and summer camp programs, scientists and therapists are now figuring out. The themes identified in their studies, research, and interviews are based on the relationship and the impact horses have on adolescent girls − sharing physical affection, being there for each other, being connected, dealing with stress and depression, being good at something, and being a better person. We have found that horses help with communication and leadership skills. Caring for the horses’ needs teach responsibility, compassion, and thoughtfulness. When a participant learns that a 1000-pound horse is a flight animal, afraid and weary of anything new in its environment, they become more

aware of themselves to anticipate their steed’s potential response. Mucking stalls, preparing food, grooming, and cleaning tack are all part of the privilege of learning to interact, do groundwork and ride. Programs now are one-on-one. The late Dorothy Wertzlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generosity set the stage for the Mountain Garden Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s abiding commitment to local scholars.

n 1996, the Mountain Garden Club established the Dorothy Wertzler Memorial Scholarship, and has since awarded over $68,000 in college scholarships to deserving Highlands area students. Dorothy Wertzler, a past MGC president and Life Member donated thousands of hostas from her personal garden over the years for MGC sponsored plant sales, the source of the scholarship fund. Students pursuing courses of study in North Carolina colleges and Clemson University in Horticulture, Botany, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Marine Biology, Education, or other related fields may be eligible. The students must live in the 28741 or 28775 zip code to be considered, and are judged on their academic record, their financial need, and their character and commitment. In the past year, Mountain Garden Club has provided two very deserving young ladies with monies toward their education. They will join the ranks of many recipients who have come before them, like one that has a very successful landscape company, or another that earned his Ph.D. and is now a university professor. As of March 1, Mountain Garden Club is reviewing applications of additional students who wish to follow any of the above curriculums and need financial assistance.
