About The Village Green T

he Village Green is literally The Heart of Cashiers. Not only is the 13-acre park geographically situated in the center of Cashiers, but it is also the hub for community events and gatherings. With over 80 annual events that are open to the public, it is easy to see why The Village Green has become the heart of our Village. Mission Began by a visionary group of collaborators, The Village Green came into 4 | Events at The Village Green 2022

existence 30 years ago in 1992 to preserve the heritage and integrity of our Cashiers Village and enhance the land for our community’s civic, spiritual, academic, recreational, and cultural activities. The Village Green will continue its mission to enrich our community through cultural events, family-friendly programming, and the arts for generations to come.

Funding The Village Green receives no public funding or government support; operations and improvements are funded by specially planned events, grants, and individual contributions.

hoose the food less traveled at The Green Market – Locally Grown on The Green, Cashiers Green Market for local growers at The Village Green Commons. The market is “producer-only” meaning that the vendor must be the grower or producer of ALL the products they sell. Vendors must produce within a 125-mile radius of Cashiers. That means that the season for each fruit and vegetable is longer. Shopping at the Green Market provides a forum for learning how food is grown, who grew it, and why it tastes so good. Fill your basket with naturally raised meat and dairy items, fresh eggs, jams, pickles, and freshly baked bread… Set your table with fresh cut flowers that morning or plant your entryway with locally grown perennials.

Groovin’ On the Green July - September

usic fills the air in The Village Green no matter the season. The Village Green Commons Lawn and Lewis Hall are the venues for artist performances. The Village Green is bringing back our FREE summer concert series, “Groovin’ on the Green!” Our 2022 Groovin’ schedule features some outstanding musicians. The concerts will feature favorite groups, and perhaps a few new ones as well. The Village Green staff is delighted, too, that they will be able to hold concerts indoors when the weather turns inclement or cooler and when daylight is shorter in the Fall. A new addition to Groovin’ this year will be the ability for a group to “Rent a Tent.” 16 | Events at The Village Green 2022

StoryWalk I

n the summer of 2020, the leaders of the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library, The Village Green, The Literacy Council of Cashiers, and Vision Cashiers began a collaboration to install a StoryWalk in The Village Green. A StoryWalk provides an outdoor adventure that champions reading along with family connection, health, and wellness. Pages of a story are posted at a series of stations along the trail at The Village Green, allowing families and friends to enjoy a story as they walk the path. The collaboration between these

organizations has allowed the community to enjoy four books along the StoryWalk: Every two months a new, seasonally appropriate book is debuted on the trail. Scan below to contribute to this amazing literacy adventure in The Heart of Cashiers!

Village Nature Series

he Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust and The Village Green sponsor a series of lectures each year from May through October. Visitors and residents learn about wildlife in the area and the various features of their natural habitats. The Village Nature Series will begin at 5:00 P.M. on the last Tuesday of the month from May through October at The Village Green Commons Event Hall on Frank Allen Road. May 31: Mountain Wildlife Rose Wall, Education Director & Senior Naturalist of the Balsam Mountain Trust will be bringing a host of mountain wildlife that is endemic (native) to our Blue Ridge Mountains. Come prepared to interact with some of WNC’s most beloved creatures! June 28: Cherokee History and Nikwasi Mound Elaine Eisenbraun, Executive Director of The Nikwasi Initiative will give our group a history lesson on Cherokee culture and history in our area, including the significance of The Nikwasi Mound and those like

July 26: Living with Bears Cynthia Strain with BearWise will explore the nuances of bear behavior and how we can peacefully, and happily, co-exist with a treasured mountain species. August 30: Healthy Headwater Streams Patrick Weaver, Education Coordinator with Headwaters Outfitters will give us information on how you can help keep the headwaters of The French Broad and The Chattooga Rivers pristine for generations to come. September 27: Animals We Love to Hate Carlton Burke, of Carolina Mountain Naturalists, will bring live animals that all of us love to hate! October 25: The Secret Life of Bats Dr. Rada Petric, Director of the UNC Institute for the Environment at the Highlands Field Site will showcase one of WNC’s most spooky creatures – BATS - just in time for Halloween!

4th of July Extravaganza Monday, July 4

ome one, come all! This Independence Day, come on out to The Village Green for an evening of food, music, and of course, fireworks. The annual “4th of July Extravaganza on the Green” will take place at 6:30 P.M. on Monday, July 4 28 | Events at The Village Green 2022

at The Village Green Commons. Entertainment will be provided in the form of the rhythm and blues band Continental Divide, as well as a fireworks show featuring over 1,000 colorful bursts. Admission to the event is free, however

donations will be collected to help with the cost of the event. Many small communities have eliminated fireworks from their celebrations due to the costs of a large pyrotechnic display, but The Village Green believes it is important to preserve this patriotic tradition

for the Cashiers community. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnics and coolers of their own. We hope to see you all there, and God Bless America!

Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival

he Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival enhances the cultural life of Western North Carolina by sponsoring performances by acclaimed musicians and promoting education, outreach and audience development programs that foster an appreciation of chamber music.

Easels on The Green July 10 - 17

his summer is the Sixth Biennial Cashiers Plein Air Festival, now Easels on The Green, an art competition and sale featuring nationally acclaimed painters from throughout the country. Plein air is French for “open air.” More than 20 invitational artists will set up their easels to capture the beauty of the North Carolina Mountains July 10-17. Their original art is displayed for viewing and sale at a pop-up art gallery at The Lewis Hall at The Village Green on Frank Allen Road in Cashiers. The artists’ medium, technique and subject matter are varied but every canvas highlights the unique landscape and lifestyle of the area. Special events, ticketed events, and a gallery open to the public showcase their art. Festival artists will present live demonstrations and offer insights into their methods for painting. Plans began for Cashiers Plein Air Festival in 2008. The idea originated from members of the The Village Green Board of Directors. Mary Palmer Dargan, Trish Warriner and Karen Weihs launched the first festival of professional Plein Air artists in 2010 to compete and sell works created

Blessing of the Animals

Saturday, October 1 | 11:00 A.M.

he Blessing of the Animals is a tradition in the Cashiers community started by the Church of the Good Shepherd. Cashiers’ area churches will observe this annual event at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 1 at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. Bring a chair to this gathering with animals that features music and prayer in celebration of all God’s creatures great and small. Each animal receives a special blessing. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the Cashiers Highlands Humane Society. Besides a monetary gift, items like blankets, rugs, towels, Milk Bones, unscented cat litter and canned dog and cat food are useful as well as

always needed. The Village Green will provide water and trash cans for the animals, which must be leashed or otherwise secured and under the owners’ control at all times. The tradition of animal or pet blessings is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures. Leaf Festival

Friday - Sunday, October 7 - 9

housands of “leaf lookers” travel through the Cashiers area every October to enjoy the wonderful hues of red, orange and yellow as the trees turn their Autumn colors. This fall festival celebrates the leaves beginning to change in the beautiful mountain village of Cashiers. This popular and free event welcomes 100 artisans and merchants to the park. Visitors will find unique handcrafted wood, pottery, jewelry and more on display and available for purchase throughout the weekend. Plenty of food and drinks are available in the park. Leaf Festival also includes a special fall

edition of Groovin’ on The Green Common’s Lawn. Ingles Supermarkets brings Cashiers their Hometown Concert Series featuring Joe Lasher and Kaitlyn Baker on October 7 at 6:00 P.M. More live musical performances will be on the Gazebo stage Saturday and Sunday. The festival starts each day at 10:00 A.M. and ends at 5:00 P.M. on Friday and Saturday, and until 3:00 P.M. on Sunday. Christmas on the Green

Friday, November 25 - Friday, February 3

he Village Green will add some sparkle to your holidays on Friday, November 25, with the annual “Christmas On the Green” celebration. After a day of feasting make your spirits merry and bright with a visit to The Village Green.

The festivities also include the annual Cashiers Christmas Tree lighting ceremony 5:30-6:30 P.M. Friday, November 25, at the Gazebo near the Cashiers Crossroads. Visit local vendors for crafted Christmas gifts and some warm and tasty treats.

The evening features holiday music, but the highlight of the day will be when the switch is turned on to illuminate the 65-foot spruce in the center of Cashiers followed by thousands of twinkling lights throughout the village core.

Stroll the pathways of The Village Green at the crossroads of Cashiers throughout December & January to enjoy the breathtaking light display. The Village Lights will stay until early February 2023.

The Lewis Hall at The Village Green is an open and inviting space that is incredibly versatile. The Hall can be transformed into whatever your heart desires. Whether that would be a winter wonderland or kept in

a more rustic state by playing off the natural light, cedar beams, and classic color palette. During our “High Season – May through December,” pricing begins at $5,000 and is capped at $9,000.
