THE 2023 ARIZONA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE IS

JANUARY 22 AT SCOTTSDALE CIVIC CENTER

About 50 collectors will showcase approximately 100 classic cars for 4,000 ticketed spectators, guests, VIPS and media January 22 when the fifth Arizona Concours d’Elegance takes place on the lawn of the Scottsdale Civic Center, next to the Scottsdale Center for the Arts.

The curated and judged event rejoins Arizona Automotive Week, featuring internationally known car auctions scheduled each January in the Phoenix/ Scottsdale area. The first four concours were held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, 2014 through 2017. This fifth one is the first event held at the Scottsdale Civic Center following a $30-million renovation.

“Scottsdale Arts and the Arizona Concours d’Elegance will bring the art of the automobile to a grand Concours on the Civic Center Plaza where the public can view spectacular automobiles only seen in museums and private collections. This is a one-day event you do not want to miss,” says Paradise Valley resident Ed Winkler, the event co-founder and co-director, with Scottsdale’s Chuck Stanford Jr., both well-known car collectors.

This year, the concours theme is The Art of Aerodynamics, with collectibles from the earliest streamlined vehicles, including significant race cars, early horseless carriages and pre-war classics to sports and competition cars from Europe and the U.S. and a display class for contemporary supercars.

Signature cars that will appear include a 1913 Bugatti Type 22 Torpedo, believed to be the oldest running Bugatti sports car in North America; the 1935 SS-90

Prototype, the first sports car built by the British automaker that would become Jaguar; and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing with a lightweight alloy body, one of just 29. Other distinguished marques include Pierce-Arrow, Mercedes-Benz, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Delahaye, BMW- Veritas, Talbot-Lago and Ferrari.

Approximately 50 international automotive judges from throughout North America will examine each car and present trophies to the best one in each of the 13 classes. The finest entry among the class winners receives the Best of Show award.

Scottsdale Arts, the 501(c)(3) organization responsible for multi-disciplinary artistic services in the city, is partnering with the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, also a 501(c)(3). Proceeds will support Arizona artists and art organizations.

Brian Passey, communications manager for Scottsdale Arts, says: “The folks from concours bring their automotive expertise, deep love of cars, contacts within the automotive world and experience in previously presenting the event, while Scottsdale Arts offers its artistic expertise, event-management skills, marketing resources and knowledge of presenting large-scale lifestyle events in Scottsdale.”

Tickets are available on ArizonaConcours.com and ScottsdaleArts.org/events/ or the Scottsdale Arts box office at the Civic Center. Tickets are limited. General admission is $100. Early entry and platinum VIP tickets are also available.

BONHAMS: THE SCOTTSDALE AUCTION RETURNS

TO THE WESTIN KIERLAND JANUARY 27

A docket with 123 cars, including The John White Ramshead Collection of rare mid-century Chrysler Ghias, will provide an opportunity to acquire automotive collectibles from all eras during the 2023 Bonhams Scottsdale Auction at the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Friday, January 27.

The 12th event begins with preview days, Wednesday and Thursday, January 25 and 26, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. MST. Bidders and ticketed guests may also view the cars auction day from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The live auction takes place at the Pittman Lawn, West Lot.

“The Reserve and No Reserve docket motorcars represents more than a century of automotive excellence,” says Jakob Greisen, Bonhams vice president and head of US Motoring from the Los Angeles office.

The earliest car is a 1912 Simplex 50-horsepower 5passenger Torpedo Tourer. The first owner, Eleanor Sears, was America’s greatest pre-war sportswoman and one of the nation’s first female motorists. Her fiancé, America Cup yachtsman, Harold Vanderbilt, gifted it to her, Greisen explains.

From four decades later is a 1953 Siata 208S Spider, the 18th of just 33 Motto-bodied Spiders; it has been restored to factory-correct specifications by etceterini specialist Epifani Restorations, he says.

The ’60s are represented by a matching-numbers 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS. With coachwork designed and built by renowned carrozzeria Pininfarina and a rare hardtop, the 275 GTS was restored in 2018 by

Joining this Prancing Horse is a 2001 Ferrari F1 Authorized ‘Michael Schumacher’ Show Car, handbuilt at Ferrari’s Modena raceworks to celebrate the great driver’s F1 Championship wins.

Another great Italian marque is represented by a limitedproduction 2006 Maserati MC12 Corse. Intended for noncompetitive track use only, it was derived from the MC12 GT1 racing car that won the 2005 FIA GT world endurance championship. Powered by a 6-liter, 755-horse V-12, this is number 003 of only 12 produced and has just 123 miles from new.

And, the John White Ramshead Collection celebrates a trio of superb Euro-American collaborations. They include a 1957 Chrysler Ghia Super Dart 400 concept car which was displayed at that year's Torino and New York Motor Shows; it features a 400-horse Hemi V-8. A 1954 Chrysler Ghia GS-1 Coupe, designed by the great Virgil Exner, is one of only nine produced and five surviving. And, a 1962 Chrysler Ghia L6.4 was displayed at the New York Auto Show. “Only 26 were produced,” Greisen says, “and this is one of 17 survivors.”

The public can take part in both preview days with the advance purchase of a catalogue, $100.

A Bonhams wristband, $20, admits one to all preview days, and a bidder registration package, $130, includes catalogue, entry to the preview and auction for a registered bidder and guest. For information on tickets, see bonhams.com/scottsdale or call 1.415.391.4000.

Other awards include a People’s Choice, selected by spectators; Best Preserved; Best Restored; Best Period-Correct Modifications; Best Purpose-Built Performance; Visionary Award; Elegance of Heritage; Best Electro-Mod; and Rookie of the Year for the top vehicle owned by someone 25 years old or younger.

“At Barrett-Jackson, we continue to elevate the auction experience throughout all of our annual events,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “I’m particularly excited about bringing FCCS on board as part of our Scottsdale Auction because it further exemplifies our commitment and dedication to the collector car hobby, while ensuring its growth and popularity amongst the next generation of automotive enthusiasts.”

Volare Hangars at Pegasus Airpark: First Class for Your Aircraft & Toys

The Equity 1000 team have landed on a great opportunity for those looking for premier private hangar space in the Phoenix area to store their planes, helicopters, collectible cars and more.

Their Volare Hangars development is at Pegasus Airpark (5AZ3) in Queen Creek, the award-winning community about an hour from downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale and ten minutes south of the Mesa Gateway Airport. Comprising 24 standard hangars and 10 upgraded executive hangars, 60by-60 square feet to 80-by-80 square feet, Pegasus is a rare gated aviation- and equestrian-focused community, adjacent to the private airport’s large paved runway, 5,124 feet by 80 feet.

The zoning and site plan has been fully approved by the town, with conceptual drawings and unit reservations available. Equity 1000 LLC, a local family-operated company owned by the Panfils, has about 50% of the phase I units reserved. “We will be releasing purchase contracts within the next 30 days or so and have only started marketing

since the beginning of December 2022,” says John Panfil, a longtime Valley resident and former owner of Anthem Motors in north Phoenix. Delivery of the first units is expected to be during the third or fourth quarter of this year, he adds.

This Volare development originated from a combination of passion and market conditions by the family, including Johnnie, his son, he explains. They were searching for a hangar in Pegasus before coming across the opportunity to develop this vacant land and provide high-end hangars to the rapidly growing general aviation market, which is experiencing a significant shortage of places to store aircraft according to industry data and FAA’s congressional hearings, says Johnnie.

One reason for this shortage is that most airports are owned by municipalities, which have strict requirements they must meet for FAA funding. “Public airports receiving funding from the FAA are required to have ground leases on hangars located within the airport, and, once the initial term

46 Highline Autos 2023 Arizona Auction Guide | www.Highline-Autos.com Volare Hangars
renderings courtesy Equity 1000 LTD

and any renewals are over, the airport authorities can take ownership of the hangar. So, at most airports, hangars are only available with limited ownership rights due to ground leases that come with strict rules and restrictions, unlike private airports,” explains John.

Private airports, such as Pegasus Airpark, provide greater ownership rights without any ground leases; they are managed and maintained by a community association as they do not receive funding from FAA. Therefore, with fewer restrictions on how the hangars can be used, you can also store cars, RVs, boats, and other equipment without any issues.

“You own the hangar fee simple, forever allowing it to be passed down for generations and to appreciate in value without the diminishing returns caused by ground leases. You can also modify and make improvements to the interior of the hangar without concerns of an authority taking ownership of your hangar or kicking you out,” John explains.

Volare’s standard hangars are pre-engineered metal

construction for the exterior and demising walls. They will also include features such as premium hydraulic hangar doors, three-phase power supply, plumbing to install restrooms and/or appliances, insulated ceiling/walls and additional roof structure ready for future HVAC systems. Buyers of these units can build out “man caves” or small offices and restrooms in addition to storing aircraft.

The larger executive hangars will utilize commercialgrade CMU block construction for the exterior and demising walls, providing a substantial upgrade in build quality, insulation and sound attenuation. These units will have dedicated street addresses with private driveways and patios and greater flexibility in potential uses, including building out a portion of the interior into a residence.

Johnnie says, “Volare Hangars are built with passion and pride to deliver the best possible facility and amenities for storing present-day aircraft as well as being prepared for the future EVs and hybrids.”

Steering Wheel Art

“My name is Adrian Suciu, and I am the owner of Steering Wheel Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was born in Timisoara, Romania; after finishing high school, I joined the army. In 2001, I decided with my wife, Luminita, to move to Spain and get married.

“I had to accept any job opportunity to be able to maintain my family. I used to work as a postman, a construction worker and I even opened a secondhand store. Then, my wife and I decided for me to go to Romania to get my truck driver’s license so I could have a more stable job. But I kept searching for more things to do because that wasn’t my dream.

“I went to Timisoara, and my brother gave me a steering wheel to wrap in leather. I didn’t know that it was possible to do that, so I told him that I would buy a case from the store. He told me that he didn’t want that and that he wanted it custom made. I went to a guy that wrapped steering wheels in leather named Silviu. I was just observing how he was doing his job and I was fascinated by his work. I was just like a little kid in Legoland. I felt like I

was being told that I had to do this amazing job.

“My wife told me to focus on getting my truck driver's license, but I told her that I would also like to try to have this job which I thought was really amazing and interesting. I got to buy a sewing machine from Romania and I brought it to Spain. When I was trying to put the thread in the machine, I accidentally broke the needle. I didn’t get to accomplish much in Spain.

“In 2015 or 2016, I was thinking of moving to the U.S. with my family. I worked as a truck driver in Spain for about six months, and then we packed our bags and moved to the U.S. I started as a construction worker, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to wrap steering wheels in leather. I was telling my partners from work that I was thinking about wrapping steering wheels, and they told me to go for it. I began searching through the internet to get some thread, leather and more.

“My very first steering wheel that I attempted to wrap took days to finish, I would get out of my

garage exhausted. I wanted to see how someone would react to my new work because for me it was something very satisfying to see what amazing things I could make with my own hands.

“During the week, I would go to shops and garages that had custom cars so I could show them my work. When I saw the shop that I am currently at, I really liked it because I saw that it was very organized and clean. So I told my wife that I wanted to rent a shop for myself to work at with steering wheels; I could only rent a room at that shop, but that was just enough space for me. I asked the owner of the place if I could rent a room there, and he said that I could. I was very happy when I was told that I could rent that room.

“In September, I organized all of my things in my new place and I made myself a table to work on with leather and other stuff. This was where my new adventure began because I was around only exotic cars and that was how my perspective changed and went to the next level. People started talking about me and recommending me.

“I started going to every car event that I possibly could and sometimes I would even go to three events on Saturdays. One of the events takes place in Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson; I would go around there with my business cards and a steering wheel, and people would ask me why I was carrying a steering wheel with me. This year was amazing for me because finally I was able to put up a stand at Barrett-Jackson. I had some customers that would come over to my stand and congratulate me because I got to put my stand at the biggest car auction in the world. It was tiring but I enjoyed it because I was doing it with passion.

“When a customer tells me a genuine ‘thank you’ for the product it means a lot to me, more than receiving the money. I finally have a job that I actually love and I believe it’s the best job that I could ever have. I get to live in a dream that I wasn’t even dreaming about before.”

AZ JET CENTER HANGAR PARTY 2023

IS FEBRUARY 25 AT SAWYER AVIATION

Gourmet food, live music with Notes from Neptune, displays of cars, helicopters, planes, top spirits and wines, international fashion, silent auction items and fund-raising for worthy causes: Book your ticket for the annual AZ Jet Center Hangar Party, Saturday, February 25, 2023, 6–10 p.m., at Sawyer Aviation Private Hangar in north Scottsdale.

Tucson, AZ -based Jet Center Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that produces jet hangar lifestyle events to raise funds for selected charities. Each is an inspiring evening of enjoying the best things in life, including the passion for great cars.

“When you’re looking for a wonderful way to entertain clients, friends or significant people in your world, attending a special event like the AZ Jet Center hangar party has shown to create lasting memories and a deeper impression than most any other typical entertainment such as dinners or ball games,” says Katrina Couch, foundation president.

“A fundraiser charity event, with gourmet and lifestyle experiences, provides the perfect opportunity to have an amazing experience, including silent auction opportunities for trips, spirits and special gift items,” she adds. “You and your guests will accomplish wonderful memories.”

Among the featured cars is a Ferrari F-8 from a local owner, and Authentic Motorcars is bringing select classic vehicles, and other private owners will showcase their treasures. Aircraft are Sawyer Charter planes, including a new Embraer Phenom. Western Sky Helicopters will be present as well as

privately owned aircraft.

“Our sponsor partners provide opportunities for attendees to receive premium items while helping out organizations making a difference in your local community and the world,” she says.

These groups are Angel Flight West, Lost Our Home Pet Rescue and Kettey’s Exchange International. Angel Flight West’s volunteer pilots fly people to medical appointments at no cost to the passenger. Sick children are flown to needed treatments by Angel Flight West.

Lost Our Home Pet Rescue responds to challenging situations regarding pets, such as family issues, homelessness, medical emergencies and financial hardship. And, Kettey’s Non Profit provides resources to displaced women and children in several countries including Ghana and Mexico. Because of the Ukraine Crisis, the group is also raising money to help displaced people there.

Limited partnerships to support these causes are available; please inquire with Jet Center Events.

Event sponsors include Meguiar’s, Sports Car Market, Sawyer Aviation and Highline Autos

The AZ Jet Center Event is limited to 500 attendees. Highline Autos readers should enter the promo code 23Highline at checkout to receive $25 off the online ticket price (until February 24, 2023).

THE GRUNDY AGENCY: AGREED VALUE TAKES THE DRIVER’S SEAT

If you have one or more classic cars, make sure they’re insured with Agreed Value Coverage, says Josh Grundy, third-generation principal of The Grundy Agency Inc., based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, an hour north of Philadelphia.

Agreed Value and Stated Value are as different as junker and Jag. Today’s large insurance carriers offer Stated Value Coverage, but collector-carfocused companies insist on the Agreed Value product. “Let’s say you insure your collector car for $40,000 with one of the big guys. If something happens to it, that’s not what you’ll get a check for. The company will subtract depreciation, mileage and wear and tear, and your $40,000 valuation has disappeared,” he explains.

“Agreed Value, however, is an agreed-upon valuation between an insured and The Grundy Agency set at the start of the policy that will remain for the term

of the policy,” he adds. “There’s no haggling in the event of a total loss claim. The total you agree to, that $40,000, is paid.”

Grundy is a collector car expert by legacy. In 1947, his grandfather, James A. Grundy Sr., invested his World War II GI bill benefits to create the company and immediately debuted Agreed Value Insurance, a new insurance product to the niche market. The first policy James Sr. wrote was to protect his fatherin-law Sam Baily’s antique automobile collection.

Collector car enthusiasts quickly recognized the Grundy family expertise, and growth was robust. By 1955, with James Sr.’s guidance, the company had 10,000 collector cars insured in a vastly different marketplace than we see today. James A. Grundy Jr., Josh’s father, has been at the wheel of the Grundy Agency since the late ’80s, bringing innovative insurance products to market for the automotive

hobby. Josh notes that the firm is the country’s largest insurer of several categories of collector cars. This year is the agency’s 75th anniversary.

Today, James Grundy Jr. is the only broker in the country to have valuation and underwriting authority extended by the American International Group, permitting him to approve collection and individual vehicle values at his discretion, Josh notes.

In addition to covering classic, collector and exotic vehicles, The Grundy Agency can also insure collections of jewelry and watches, fine art, antique furniture, clocks, firearms, fine wine, guns, stamps, coins and more. “Our risk management specialists work closely with our clients to protect appreciating items of all types,” he says. In most cases, a third-party appraisal of nonautomotive collections isn’t required, but the company contracts with specialists if it is.

Grundy Insurance also created the Motor Vehicle Program, or MVP, which protects clients’ regular-use daily drivers, trucks, trailers, motor homes, electric vehicles and more on the same Agreed Value basis offered through Grundy’s Collector Vehicle Program.

And, because the Grundy Agency is licensed in every

state, you can insure your properties nationwide along with your automobiles and other valued assets. “While Grundy began with a knack for insuring great cars, we have diversified as a full-scale personal insurance agency looking to insure your whole world with one Grundy Personal Insurance Agent who has all the right contacts. We manage all of your risk so that you can enjoy your life,” Josh says.

“The basis of our success is that every Grundy policy includes superior coverage, legendary service and substantial savings,” he adds. “We focus on the client and how we can provide the best product at the most consumer effective price.”

Automotive enthusiasts also choose Grundy because they know the car passion here is long-standing, beginning a century ago when Sam, a Philadelphia businessman, restored a 1909 Pierce Arrow Mini Tonneau –– the first documented automobile restoration for historic purposes in the country, he says. “This important car is now in our lobby, and we use it for touring even to this day,” he says. “We are car people –– in and out of the office.”
