Brown A 2006 Ford GT once owned by NFL Hall of Famer John Elway from the Mile High Collection, an AACA National First Prize-winning 1929 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Coupe J-142/2165 and other great cars are among the approximately 1,500 vehicles and 200 road art items that will be offered at Mecum Glendale March 16–19 in State Farm Stadium. At Worldwide Auctioneers, a Pebble Beach award-winning 1929 Duesenberg Model J Berline, one of the first Model Js delivered when new, brought $2,260,000, and at BarrettJackson, celebrating its 50th anniversary in Scottsdale, a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT (Lot #1398) generated $1,980,000.

And, at Gooding, online sales totaled $6,962,450 from 50 of 57 lots sold, an 88-percent sell-through, and at Worldwide Auctioneers, 82 automotive lots and automobilia totaled $10,500,000, a 91% sell-through. Bonhams was equally successful, posting a 96% sell-through at $11,600,000.

And, at Gooding & Company’s Geared Online Scottsdale Edition, a 1961 Maserati 5000 GT Coupe found new ownership for $924,000, and Bonhams sold a 1958 AC Ace Roadster for $516,500 –– an aluminum-bodied car an Air Force pilot had brought to the U.S. from France.

The sale of ten charity vehicles was led by the record-setting $3,600,000 from the auction of the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 VIN 001 (Lot #3009). It was the highest selling charity car donated by a manufacturer in Barrett-Jackson’s history. Two 2022 Toyota Tundras, the Toyota Tundra Capstone VIN 001 and the Toyota TRD Pro 002, sold for $700,000 and $550,000, respectively. Paralympian Kaitlyn Verfuerth, who has benefitted from the Fund, was on the auction block for both sales. To date, Barrett-Jackson has helped raise more than $144 million for charity for organizations around the world.

A barn-find 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadsters, one of 141 produced, sold for $472,500, and, from years later, a 1961 Porsche 356B 1600 Super T5 Cabriolet, a matchingnumbers example in the Reutter T5 body style, $226,240. And, a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Sports Saloon, Coachwork by Touring, realized $381,750.

In addition, a very early-production 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL set a new world auction record for the model at $108,900. And all ten cars in The Richard Donner Collection sold, led by the late filmmaker’s favorite 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible, which gaveled down for $121,000 after a keen bidding war.

More recent classics finding new garages included a lowmileage 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, $445,000; a Pinnifarina-designed 1995 Ferrari F355 Spider, with fewer than 900 miles from new, $224,000; and a 1997 Porsche 911 ‘Type 993’ Turbo S Coupé, with just 14,000 miles since new, $467,000.

Concours in the Hills smashes records for eighth year in succession written by Peter Volny photos by Rob Mains The eighth annual Concours in the Hills car show on Saturday February 12 continued its unbroken tradition of record setting. Almost 1,200 vehicles, and an estimated 4050,000 spectators, completely filled 35-acre Fountain Park in Fountain Hills, AZ to raise over $430,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

LeMans, CanAm and other race series. One car was Mario Andretti’s Lotus 38, which revolutionized Indy from front engine to rear. Others included a Ford GT Mk IV, McLaren Mk 8E, Toyota GTP, Lola T70 and T160, Genie Mk 10, Surtees TS-8, Maserati Birdcage, Mirage M1 and M12. Six helicopters flew in and were on display including a USMC AH-1Z Cobra around which Cobras from the local club were displayed.

Mother Nature again cooperated with clear, sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80’s. The magnitude of this show is a testament to the enormity and diversity of the car scene in Arizona. The show had over 100 sponsors, including Title sponsor Gila River Resorts & Casinos, and encompassing most facets of the car business. Private car owners pay just $60 to participate and spectators are free.

The show was declared open by former race-drivers Arie Luyendyk, Harley Cluxton, Derek Daly and Lyn St. James announcing, “Drivers Start Your Engines”. A special interactive feature was the Discount Tire Pit Stop Competition where the public were able to test their skill at a timed wheel change as in NASCAR.

The show is arranged by sections for Domestic, European, Asian, Race Cars, Motorcycles, Military and Off-Road vehicles. A new section for this year was Limited Edition Exotics which included such exceptionally rare cars as a $20 million McLaren F1, Hennessey Venom F5, LaFerrari, McLaren Elva, Aston Martin One-77 and a vintage Ferrari 500 Superfast.

Peter Volny, show founder and lead organizer, stated “I’m amazed every year at how this show just grows and grows. I’m so appreciative of the many volunteers from both the car community and PCH who help make it all happen”.

Panorama Estates is 80 acres of possibilities in Arizona Wine Country. The new central Arizona single-home community is on the east side of Page Springs Road at Winter Sun Drive in Cornville, a town about an hour and a half north of Phoenix/Scottsdale. Out of the 69 approximately lots, 64 are available, says Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale. The parcels begin at just more than three-quarters and will be sold in two phases. The asphalt-paved exterior streets have been completed. Also in place are the fire hydrants, street drainage and drainage easements, the spring-water well site and the water-storage treatment and distribution area. All utilities have been brought to site by Arizona Public Service Company, the state’s largest generator of electricity, and CenturyLink, which is providing the telephone, cable and internet. “Find your cooler summer oasis here and allow your imagination to explore the possibilities,” Aazami says. “We want to inspire ideas at Panorama Estates.” Nancy Read, who handles Sedona and Prescott for PCG, is partnering with him on the community. Ehr is also inspired by the community and believes it can provide opportunities to implement the “Wine County Living” design he completed for a home in St. Helena, California, in the Napa Valley. Please talk with us or visit.” Cornville: ‘Where Friends Become Family’ With approximately 3,300 inhabitants, Cornville offers full-time residents and seasonal guests a small-town atmosphere in a cozy 13-plus square miles. The mild semi-arid climate at 3,500 feet is 15 degrees cooler in summer than the hotter desert areas in Phoenix and Scottsdale, and snowfall is minimal. The Sinagua Native Americans first settled the area almost 1,000 years ago, followed by the Yavapai and Apaches. Spanish explorer Antonio de Espejo came through here in early May 1583, mountain men followed 250 years later and other settlers in the 1860s. You can visit the area’s first homesite from 1880. Entirely agricultural until the late 1960s, Cornville began to attract retirees in the last half century for its quiet ambiance, mild climate and affordable lifestyle. Senator John McCain, who died in 2018, and wife Cindy had a vacation home adjacent to Oak Creek; here he and his 2008 presidential running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, met to plan their campaign. The McCain family still owns the ranch.

In all directions are stellar views. Panorama Estates backs to state trust land on the south, and Coconino National Forest is on the north and south, across Lee Pasture Road. Oak Creek, flowing south from world-destination Sedona and green Oak Creek Canyon, is approximately 1 ½ miles north; along its banks are some of the area’s wineries, guest ranches and cafes, such as Up the Creek Grill, formerly the historic Page Springs Store and Gas Station. In view are the red rocks of Sedona and, farther north, the state’s highest elevations, the San Francisco Mountains, 11,000 feet to more than 12,000 feet high. House Mountain, a 5,125-foot shield volcano, is to the northeast. Mingus Mountain, at 7,818 feet, tops the Black Hills to the west; along its slope is the historic copper-boom town of Jerome, now a popular arts, dining, wine and shopping destination. By car, the best approach to the community is from Interstate 17 north to Exit 287 toward Cottonwood via SR 260, then State Route 89A north to Sedona, turning right at Page Springs Road (in part Yavapai County Scenic Route 50), then about 10 minutes to Panorama Estates. If you fly a small plane, the Cottonwood Municipal Airport is approximately 10 miles west; Flagstaff Pulliam Airport is approximately 54 miles north; and the Sedona Airport

approximately 17 ½ miles northeast. In Cornville, the Solair Estates Airport is just 2 ¼ miles south. Major grocery stores are within 10 miles: Fry’s Food and Drug, approximately 8 miles southwest; Walmart Supercenter, 8 ½ miles southwest; and Food City, 8 ½ miles southwest. The U.S. post office is 2 ½ miles southwest, and Verde Valley Fire District Station 32 approximately 1 ½ miles south. Verde Valley Medical Center is approximately 9 miles west and NextCare Urgent Care is about 9 ½ miles west. Ambulance service is available by dialing 911, and the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department has police jurisdiction. Oak Creek Elementary School (PreK–8), is approximately 1 ½ miles northwest, and Mingus Union High School (9–12) approximately 8 miles southwest in Cottonwood. The Oak Creek Ranch School, a private boarding school, is in Cornville. Northern Arizona University is in nearby Flagstaff, and Yavapai College has campuses in Sedona and Clarkdale, including a wine center.

The Hills, the Trails & the Vines are Calling “If you enjoy four-wheeling, there are many opportunities right outside your door to enjoy the beauties of central and northern Arizona,” Aazami says. Hiking and mountain biking trails are abundant. In addition to the famous red sandstone monuments of Sedona, Oak Creek and the Verde River offer hundreds of miles of trails; small boats and kayaks can navigate them. If you prefer a less strenuous but equally rewarding train ride, the Verde Canyon Railroad through Clarkdale takes you on a fab fourhour tour above the Verde River and its colorful canyon, complete with bald eagles and other wildlife. The 423-acre Dead Horse Ranch State Park in the Verde River Greenway has 10 miles of hiking trails and has access to Coconino National Forest land. And, near Clarkdale, Tuzigoot National Monument was built between 1125 and 1400 CE –– the Verde Valley’s largest and best- preserved Sinagua pueblo ruins.

More and more, the area around Panorama Estates has become Arizona Wine Country, with its Merlot, Chardonnay, Rhône and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals. The Verde Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) features land adjacent to the Mogollon Rim, the 7,000-foot-high escarpment that crosses New Mexico and Arizona. Talk of vineyards and varietals and wine awards is everywhere in the area. In fact, a decade or so ago, the Wall Street Journal suggested the area could become Arizona’s “Little Napa.” Among the Cornville-area wineries are Eric Glomski’s Page Springs Cellars, known for its Rhône-style varietals such as Traminette and Syrah, and in Cottonwood is Bob and Barbara Predmore’s 87-acre Alcantara Vineyards. On June 28, 1926, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), manufacturer of the 35-horse Mercedes in 1901, and Benz & Cie, whose founder shares credit for inventing the first internal combustion-powered automobile 15 years before, merged to establish one of the great automotive brands. Mercedes-Benz Pkw and Daimler Truck are now independent companies based in Stuttgart, Germany. Other great names followed, of industry pioneers, legendary cars, great drivers, famous races and tracks: Daimler, Maybach, Jellinek, Benz, Simplex, Kompressor, Gullwing, Silver Arrows and The SLR McLaren; Stirling Moss, Mika Hakkinen, Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton; 1894 Paris–Rouen, the Argentine Grand Prix, Indianapolis, Nürburgring and Mille Miglia. Celebrating these people, places and automotive firsts, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, on the outskirts of Stuttgart, Germany, in Bad Cannstatt, showcases 160 cars, from the first to today’s industry standard-setters. vehicles embraces 135-plus years of history and innovation and is not open to the public, but those cars are seen at exhibitions, motor shows and classic car events and rallies, explains Benedikt Weiler, the museum curator. On January 5, the 11-millionth visitor toured the museum; people from more than 190 countries have enjoyed the cars, the automobilia and as many as 175 public and customer events annually including exhibitions, presentations, concerts and cinema shows, says Weiler, noting that visitors walk as many as three and a half miles during their visits. “The Museum celebrates the automobile; it relates its history and tells its stories, bringing both alive by placing them in the context of technology, day-to-day life, social history and popular culture,” he says. The vehicles include some of the oldest automobiles, such as The Daimler Motorized Carriage and a replica of the Benz Patent Motor car, both from 1886, famous racing cars and futuristic research vehicles, exemplified by almost 90 years of the great Silver Arrows. These cars are the centerpiece of the permanent exhibition comprising more than nine levels of open space.

The new museum replaced the former one from 1986. Daimler and Benz-Company has long held historical collections maintained by the original companies, Daimler-MotorenGesellschaft (DMG), founded in November 1890 by Gottlieb Daimler, and Benz & Cie, founded 1883. Assembling a historical vehicle collection began in 1921 by DMG and Benz & Cie. As distinctive as the cars, the facility was designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio van Berkel & Bos, Amsterdam, and built from 2003 to 2006. The walls and ceilings are a double helix reminiscent of the double helix of human DNA, where the genetic information is stored.

The Nazis condemned his modernist work as decadent; today it is celebrated. “Stuttgart’s cityscape is defined by its vineyards, and the local wines have won many prizes,” Larson says. The Stuttgart Wine Trail traverses the vineyards and offers great views from Royal Burial Chapel of the Württemberg Royal Family. The hills around Stuttgart include the “Stäffele,” which are hundreds of steps originally built to access the vineyards; Karlshöhe, which began as quarry in the Middle Ages; and the Eugensplatz, steps leading to a square centered by the figure of the mythological Galatea, beloved of Acis. And, the Museum of Viniculture offers extensive history of the local wines, and in late summer and autumn, the region’s vintners showcase their wines at local wine festivals.

Presented by LPL Financial and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, the 16th La Jolla Concours will feature 125-plus vehicles that will be independently judged in 14 classes, 13 for cars and one for motorcycles.

The Tour d’Elegance Saturday afternoon features concoursparticipating and other classic cars, and the people who love them, cruising San Diego. The event includes breakfast, lunch and commemorative gifts. “To top it all off, any participant of the Concours who participates gets an additional point that contributes to the Sunday judging,” Dorvillier explains. Proceeds benefit the La Jolla Historical Society, which preserves the rich history of the village of La Jolla, and several local community nonprofit partners each year.

The Concours, “World Class Cars, World Class Experience,” takes place at Ellen Scripps Browning Park in the La Jolla Cove, and the weekend’s events, such as the parties and tour, take place nearby, also in La Jolla. For the first year, a Ferrari Friday on Prospect Street is scheduled, free to the public. “We will be lining the streets full of Ferraris,” says G. Michael Dorvillier, chairman of the event. “We’ll also have live music, retail and dining specials and more to make it a fun evening.”

On Sunday, the judging occurs between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., led by Chief Judge Nigel Matthews, Global Brand Ambassador for Hagerty; the La Jolla Concours uses the multi-marque system provided by the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG). The car in the class with the highest score is the class winner, and all class winners are eligible for the Best of Show award.

SPIRIT OF ECSTASY REDESIGNED FOR MOST AERODYNAMIC ROLLS-ROYCE EVER Rolls-Royce has reimagined its iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine to grace the bonnet of its new all-electric motor car, Spectre, 111 years to the day the Spirit of Ecstasy was first registered as intellectual property of Rolls-Royce on 6th February 1911. The figurine has been remodelled with a lower, more dynamic stance that brings her much closer to the drawings made by her original creator, the illustrator and sculptor Charles Sykes, in the early years of the 20th century. It also sees her physical form represent The Expression, a visual device that forms part of the marque's new visual language. The new Spirit of Ecstasy stands 82.73mm tall, compared to her predecessor’s 100.01mm. Her robes, which flow behind her in the slipstream – often but erroneously characterised as ‘wings’ – have been subtly reshaped to make them more aerodynamic and realistic. The most visible change is her stance. Previously, she has stood with her feet together, legs straight and tilting at the waist. Now, she is a true goddess of speed, braced for the wind, one leg forward, body tucked low, her eyes focused eagerly ahead. These changes have both practical and stylistic benefits, contributing to Spectre’s remarkable aerodynamic properties. The earliest Spectre prototypes have a drag coefficient (cd) of just 0.26, making it the most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever created. The figure is expected to improve during the product’s exhaustive testing protocols undertaken in 2022. This new expression captures the essence of Charles Sykes’ original drawings, but rather than simply being ‘redrawn’ or ‘redesigned’, her new shape has been digitally sculpted by a computer modeller working at the Home of Rolls-Royce, who has a passion for life drawing and sculpture. Their experience in this field was invaluable in developing the figurine’s elegant lifelike facial features as well as her expression, which deftly combines focus and serenity. The designers also consulted stylists at Goodwood for their perspective on her hair, clothes, posture, and expression, adding an authentically contemporary aura to her dynamism and commanding presence. While all figurines are made using one of the oldest known casting techniques, named ‘lost wax casting’ or ‘cire-perdue’, each is individually finished by hand, so will be minutely different from figurine to figurine. As well as continuing a long Rolls-Royce tradition – until 1939, the mascots were made and polished by Charles Sykes himself – this subtle, ephemeral human element creates an intriguing contrast to the precise, highly engineered motor car she sits atop. Though relatively rare in the modern era, changes to the Spirit of Ecstasy have been made throughout her 111-year lifespan. She has been rendered in various sizes and materials and, briefly, in a kneeling position. The new version created for Spectre will appear on all future models: the current design will still be used on Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn and Cullinan and their Black Badge alter egos where applicable. AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION OF THE ICON Simultaneously, Muse, the Rolls-Royce Art Programme, has announced the jury for the Spirit of Ecstasy Challenge. This inaugural initiative invites the brightest and boldest young creatives to reimagine the icon of the Spirit of Ecstasy in a context beyond her current home on a Rolls-Royce motor car. In doing so, these young artists will create high-concept pieces that surprise, delight and inspire. For each edition of this prestigious biennial event, a global panel of expert judges will select a medium for the emerging designers from which to create an artistic interpretation of the Spirit of Ecstasy. For this edition, that medium is textiles. The esteemed jury members are: Anders Warming, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars; Yoon Ahn, Creative Director of Ambush and Jewellery Director at Dior Men; Tim Marlow, Director and Chief Executive of the Design Museum in London; and Sumayya Vally, Principal of South African architectural practice, Counterspace. Terminology at Porsche: do you understand the Porsche code? Every Porsche model has an official name and an in-house type number. Sometimes the two are identical, sometimes not – the Porsche Newsroom explains. Some dreams are difficult to capture in words because they have such long names. One example is the Porsche 356 A 1500 GS Carrera, which, in 1955, conjured up a blissful expression on the faces of car enthusiasts the world over. Visually and technically, the elegant sports car was superb: “Look, there goes a Porsche three five six A fifteen hund …” and it had already zoomed past with its top speed of 124 mph. Admittedly, names can be complicated. Often, however, there is a logical explanation for the model designations: the Porsche 356 A 1500 GS Carrera model, for example, originated from the Porsche 356 and was part of the refined A series. It had an impressive engine capacity of 1,500 cc (or 1.5 liters) and was labeled as especially swift by the suffixes of GS (Grand Sport) and Carrera (Spanish for ‘racing’). Porsche devotees juggle these abbreviations and codes with skill: the 356 and 911, 964 and 993, GTS, GT and S, Carrera, Spyder, Speedster … they are all part of the Porsche cult – and every mystique has its own code. Yet for many enthusiasts, the typology of Porsche can be confusing. How can a car be called a 911 and a 991 at the same time? Is that a Boxster there or a 987? Or is it a 982? And what do the 4, the S or the Executive mean on the current models? Here are two practical aids to help you crack the Porsche One number for each order Volume XIX, Number 02

356 A 1500 GS Carrera in 1957

One number for each order In order to understand the beginnings of the in-house numbering method, it is necessary to go back to 1931. Each order and every project of Ferdinand Porsche's newly founded engineering design office, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH, was given a consecutive number: the in-house type designation. It started with seven: the design of a saloon car for the German car manufacturer Wanderer. Number 22 became the legendary Auto Union Grand Prix racing car and the Type 60 was the Volkswagen. The numbers therefore rose with each new order, with each engine designed, with each drawing for an axle, gearbox or tractor. On June 8 1948, by which time the project numbers had climbed to 356, a novelty came about: for the first time an automobile was to be made under the official brand name of Porsche. And it was called the Porsche 356. This not only marked the birth of a legendary brand, but also an iconic model with a memorable design. The 356 underwent further development with each new model year. Substantial advances in development were indicated by adding the letters A, B and C.

901 or 911? The engineers in Zuffenhausen and Weissach retained this system. Order receipts were plentiful – there were test engines, naturally aspirated engines, water turbines, racing cars – and the internal numbers were rising faster and faster. In some of the new sports car types, Porsche again used the internal plant code for the official model name, as was the case in 1953 with the spirited mid-engined Porsche 550 Spyder. Yet, it was the successor to the 356 that led the sports car manufacturer to abandon the custom. In view of possible future cooperation with the Volkswagen plant, the new Porsche had to be compatible with the figures used there. As the 900 numbers had not yet been allocated in Wolfsburg, the decision-makers at Zuffenhausen chose 901 for the six-cylinder version and 902 for a subsequent four-cylinder car. However, an unexpected problem arose: Peugeot stated that they had been using three-digit numbers with a zero in the middle since 1929 and therefore owned the legal rights to all similar number sequences in France. The zero was quickly replaced by a one, and the ‘1’ typeface, which had already been created, was simply duplicated for the brochures and type name on the rear of the vehicle. A legend was born, officially christened with the 911 name. In 1964, no one could have guessed that this stopgap solution would one day be world-famous. Expansion of the model range Of course, the 911 did not remain the only model line within the Porsche company. The 914 marked the addition of a smaller, lighter mid-engined sports car, and over the years models such as the 924, 928 and 944 joined their elder sibling. They also received their internal number as model names. By now, the practice of using three digits starting with a nine had established itself worldwide as being synonymous with the reliable sporting character from Zuffenhausen. Soon, the 900 numbers began running out and competing with each other, but the engineers stuck to their system out of tradition. In addition to the various road-legal models, pure racing cars also had to be allocated internal type numbers. One example is the legendary 917: unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in 1969, this extreme athlete secured overall victory at Le Mans a year later – the first of many racing successes in the first half of the 1970s under the 917 code. Flexibility in naming Porsche models Flexibility became increasingly in demand when it came to naming all the Porsche models. The 911 is a clear illustration of this: in the 1968 model year, the series received the internal designation of ‘A Series’ for the first time. In 1969, the B Series followed, then in 1970 the C Series, up until the substantially redesigned G Series, which was presented in 1973. However, special models within the series also received their own type number from time to time, as was the case with the internal Type 930, named the 911 Turbo or the Type 954 (911 SC RS). In 1988, a major break occurred in the 911 history with the introduction of the completely redesigned 964 model series. The 993 followed in 1993. Then the 996, 997, a return to 991 and the current model 992. Between the internal codes of the 911, there are still further models to be found, with examples being the Carrera GT (internally known as the 980), the Boxster (the 986 being the first generation, followed by the 987 second generation, the 981 and the 982) and the Cayenne (955). The tradition of the three-digit type codes is maintained today – albeit with a certain degree of creative freedom. In addition to the official designations and the in-house type numbers, the Porsche employees also give some models affectionate nicknames: one model of the 356, for example, was known as the ‘Dame’, the 917/20 version of the Le Mans racing car is remembered as the ‘Sau’, or ‘Pink Pig’. But that is another story entirely. Apart from the official model names, there are also various suffixes to describe the numerous different model versions.

911 Targa 4 GTS

Current models Boxster A name first created in 1993 and a portmanteau derived from boxer (engine) and roadster Carrera Originally, ‘Carrera’ was the name of the Type 547 four-camshaft engine designed by Dr Ernst Fuhrmann. Porsche later used this suffix for the most powerful engine versions, such as the 356 A 1500 GS Carrera or the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. However, Carrera has almost become established as a synonym for the 911 model series. The name comes from the Carrera Panamericana, a Mexican endurance race in which Porsche secured major successes with the 550 Spyder. E-Hybrid As well as the combustion engine, the E-Hybrid models also have an electric motor on board, which provides more power while ensuring the powertrain as a whole emits less CO₂. Executive The Executive models of the Panamera range have a stretched body, which primarily benefits the rearseat passengers. GTS GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport and was originally a homologation class for motor racing. The 904 Carrera GTS received this badge for the first time in 1963. In 1991, the 928 GTS revived the tradition. The GTS suffix is currently used to designate the especially sporty and exclusive models of a Porsche model series. RS The RS (RennSport, or ‘racing sport’) is a road-legal model that has been derived from its motor racing equivalent. The designation is, however, also used for particularly sporty models, such as the 911 RS America. RSR The RennSport Rennwagen, which translates as racing sport racing car, is a purely competition version and is not road legal. S S for ‘Super’ or ‘Sport’: a version with a more powerful engine. Today the S consistently stands for Sport and, in addition to the extra-sporty engine, hints at the equipment enhancements compared with the basic model.

Spyder Originally coming from the coach-making term for lightweight, open carriages for two people, the name ‘Spyder’ at Porsche is reserved for open-topped mid-engined sports cars, just like ‘roadster’. The Boxster Spyder already has a legendary predecessor in the form of the 550 Spyder from 1953. Targa The 911 Targa is an open-roofed version of the 911, characterised by its distinctive roll-over protection bar and its fixed (rather than folding), removable roof section. The name comes from the legendary Targa Florio Sicilian road race and means ‘plate’ in English. Turbo These models have an engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger, which produces a powerful boost in performance. 4 Models with all-wheel drive Historic models CS Available from 1992, the Club Sport (CS) version of the 968 had the same engine but had undergone streamlining for extra sporting character: without electric windows, rear seats and air conditioning, it may have been less comfortable but was significantly lighter and therefore faster than the regular 968. GT Similar to GTS, the Gran Turismo (GT) suffix signifies a sportier version of the basic model; the designation has its origins in motor sport, when it was used to homologate vehicles for the GT class. Appearing for the first time in 1955 with the 356 A 1500 GS Carrera GT, Porsche returned to the designation in 1989 for the 928 GT. GT-Cup Near-production racing version and not road legal, used, for example, in the Porsche Carrera Cup. L L for ‘Luxury’: the third version of the original 911 received this suffix in 1967. SC Introduced in the model year 1964, the 95 PS 356 SC (Super C) was intended to mark the end of the series. In a similar way to this, the 911 SC (Super Carrera) was introduced in 1977, and was also intended initially to be the last 911 model. However, the series was continued with the 911 Carrera 3.2. Speedster In the Speedster models, the windscreen was significantly lower when compared with the basic model, which gave the car a more streamlined silhouette. In return, the driver had to sacrifice comfort in terms of the equipment provided. T Although it was also available as a Targa version, the T in the 911 T from 1967 stood for ‘Touring’ – and hence for a less expensive entry-level version of the classic vehicle with a less powerful engine.
