Brown A 1931 Bentley 4½-Litre Supercharged “Birkin Le Mans Replica” Tourer celebrates the 100th anniversary of the great British marque as it leads 130-plus classics into Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction, August 15 and 16, during the annual Pebble Beach/ Monterey Peninsula Car Week. The longest-held auction on the Monterey Peninsula, the 22nd Bonhams has been extended to two days, Thursday and Friday, on the western lawns of Quail Lodge & Golf Club, at Valley Greens Drive and Rancho San Carlos Road, Carmel. Offering a breadth of premium vehicles at reserve and no reserve, the event is held with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering 2019. The automobilia sale begins at 9 a.m. August 15 and 16, and the cars go on block at 10 a.m. daily. Preview days are Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Offered from the Virgil Millett collection and once part of the Fred Simeone and Tom Perkins collections, the 4½ Liter Bentley, with coachwork in the style of Vandem Plas, is considered one of the most important automobile models of the 20th century, explains Jakob Greisen, vice president of US Motoring for Bonhams, which holds the world record for the most valuable Bentley ever publicly sold. “Our 1931 Supercharged ‘Birkin Le Mans Replica’ Tourer is one of the hallowed 50 factory examples and was a Brooklands BARC winner in period,” he adds. This historic sports-racer is well known and documented and represents an extremely rare opportunity.” Also formerly in the Simeone Collection is an

expertly restored 1930 Bentley Speed Six “Le Mans Replica” Tourer, with coachwork in the style of the great Vanden Plas. In addition, an “era-defining” 1981 BMW M1 is also being offered, one of just 453 built and retaining tis matching-numbers drivetrain. By master designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, this is a car of many company “firsts”: mid-engine production; entirely developed by BMW Motorsport; BMWLamborghini partnership (chassis); and BMW in Group 4 racing. “As the basis of the epic Procar, the M1 is a very capable, uncommon, distinct and game-changing sportscar whose tremendous importance is garnering more and more attention,” Greisen says. Other outstanding cars to be offered are a Pebble Beach-winning matching-numbers 1932 Auburn 12-160A Boattail Speedster; a 1934 Duesenberg Model J Dual Phaeton, with coachwork by Fran Roxas in the style of Brunn; a one-off 1952 SIATA 8V Bertone Berlinetta, veteran of Paris and New York auto shows; and a 1953 FIAT 8V Ghia Supersonic, one 1 of 15 and once owned by Briggs Cunningham. Carmel Mission Classic

7TH-ANNUAL CARMEL MISSION CLASSIC

IS

AUGUST 14

by David M. Brown Four 1930s classics –– two American cars and one German and a Swedish motorcycle –– are among the 50 vehicles planned for the 7th-annual Carmel Mission Classic, Wednesday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., August 14, at the historic Carmel Mission Basilica, 3080 Rio Road in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The first, a 1930 Stutz Monte Carlo, features coachwork by Weymann. One of three known to exist, the car visits from the Los Angeles Driving Museum in Los Angeles. The body was hand constructed out of ash, and the exterior is covered in a leatherette material, making this a “fabricbodied” car. A 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual Windshield Phaeton with coachwork by LeBaron will appear from the San Francisco Academy of Art Auto Museum. Completing the ’30s car trio is a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Special Roadster, the last year for the supercharged masterpiece designed by the great Friedrich Geiger. And, a 1936 Husqvarna 40 SV cycle will also appear. Other cars scheduled are three American classics: a magnificent 1952 Buick Roadmaster 76R, owned by John Gray, and two Corvettes, a 1956 owned by Richard Pèpe and a 1963 Split Window ‘Duntov’ from ‘Corvette’ Mike Vietro. Annually, the event brings more than 1,000 car lovers to the famous Mission San Carlos Borromeo del río Carmelo, built in 1797, a National Historic Landmark. About 50 cars and 10 motorcycles will participate. Father Junípero Serra, an early Spanish missionary in the area is buried on the grounds; Pope

26

Francis canonized him in 2015. All proceeds benefit the charities of the Knights of Columbus and the Carmel Mission. The concours begins each year with a U.S. Marine Color guard and the singing of the national anthem at 10 a.m. Judging of the cars takes place throughout the afternoon. The celebrity judge is custom-car guru, Jon Dagostino. A variety of trophies will be awarded, including Best of Show. Last year, Larry Nannini’s 1933 Chrysler Imperial LeBaron C.C. Sedan was the recipient. Car-Guys’ Barry Meguiar returns to emcee. From 11 a.m. to close, a food court and Monterey County vineyards will provide gourmet meals and fine wines. During this time, illustrator Ed Greco will display his “Cars and Cowboys” work, and Carmel Valley harpist Michael Caulfield will offer his repertoire. At 1 p.m., the Most Reverend Sylvester Ryan, Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey, and Father Paul Murphy, the Pastor of Carmel Mission Basilica, will bless the cars. “From Ferraris to Funny-Cars and Blessings to Beverages, there’s something for everyone at the Carmel Mission Classic, held at the crown jewel of the Monterey Peninsula,” says Chairman Frank DiPaola, who co-founded the event in 2013. The entrance fee is $60 at the door and $50 for an online purchase; this includes a wine tasting and tour of the Carmel Mission. by David M. Brown Concorso Italiano – the world’s largest celebration of Italian car design and performance – returns for its 34th year Saturday, August 17, 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m., at the Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, California. More than 8,000 attendees are expected to enjoy 1,000 cars and motorcycles. The event celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the Ferrari 365 Dino and the DeTomaso Pantera. The 70th of the Abarth will also be marked. And, as part of the multi-year celebration of Alfa Romeo with Sports Car Market, three stellar models will be honored: Junio Zagato, Giulietta and Guilia Spider. Ten marques are individually judged at the Concorso: Alfa, DeTomaso, Ferrari, Fiat/Abarth, Lancia, Iso / Bizzarrini, Lamborghini, Maserati, Motorcycles & Special Coachworks (Italian Designed Vehicles). Other classics regularly shown include Apollo, Bandini, Bertone, Cisitalia, Ghia, Moreti, Pagani, Ducati and Moto Guzzi. The judges select 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in each marque; the 1st-place winners are eligible for Best of Show. Last year’s top winner was the 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport owned by Herb and Rose Wysard from Fullerton, California. In addition to that award, other honors include La Bella Macchina (Hall of Fame); Doug Magnon Preservation Award; Valentino Balboni Award; Art Centers Student Choice Award; and Meguiar’s Best Finish Award. New this year, as the fourth installment of Magnificent Monthly Monterey Drives, is a nonsanctioned two–three hour drive casual drive Wednesday, August 14, from Black Horse Golf Club

28

enroute to a surprise winery destination. The event, limited to 45 cars, includes breakfast and lunch. The traditional Friday Evening Reception returns to the CI Club Pavilion for CI Club for members and owners of registered vehicles placing their cars on the field the day before the show. Guests enjoy appetizers by Gino’s Family Restaurant and wine by Esser Wines. On Saturday, the Al Fresco Lunch is sponsored by Grundy Insurance, also catered by Gino’s. Tickets are $75 and include lunch and wine and or ice tea/water. Presenting and supporting partners are Meguiar’s, Heacock Classic, Ferrari Beverly Hills, Ferrari South Bay, Ferrari Los Angeles, Ferrari Westlake, Ferrari Silicon Valley and Bacchelli & Villa by MAG. CI Club Packages are $510, available until August 15. “Concorso Italiano’s atmosphere is on the vehicles on display, conversations between people who love and appreciate them and elements of Italian style such as fashion, food, music and art –– all of this on the beautiful grounds of the Black Horse Golf Club,” says Tom McDowell, chairman for the Mercer Island-Washington-based event. “Include the great California sunshine and you can understand the elegance and continuing appeal of Concorso Italiano.” For more information on Concorso Italiano, see concorso.com or call 425.742.0632.

Exotics on Broadway

EXOTICS ON BROADWAY MOVES TO SEASIDE FOR 5TH EVENT AUGUST 17 by David M. Brown Enjoy the look, touch and sound of exotics? Do names such as Bugatti, Pagani, Koenigsegg, Spyker and mainstream marques including Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Maserati and Porsche accelerate your spirits? If so, circle your calendar Saturday, August 17, 3–8 p.m. for the fifth Exotics on Broadway in historic downtown Seaside, California, on Broadway Avenue between Del Monte and Fremont boulevards. Attracting thousands of automotive fans annually during Monterey Car Week, the free event is focused entirely on Super, Hyper and Exotic Cars and postfactory modifications made for even more sizzling performance. In addition, automotive dealerships will showcase cars, and manufacturers will offer products such as wheels, tuners and performance equipment. “We outgrew Cannery Row in downtown Monterey,” says Aimee Shackelford, spokeswoman for the Seaside-based event. “The new location works well for us. Seaside has welcomed us with open arms. I think they understood that we created our show for locals and visitors to our area so that everyone could enjoy a free car show during Monterey Car Week.” The uniqueness of Exotics on Broadway continues to bolster the event’s appeal. “We also created the show because during the time when the show started, 2015, there were no car shows focusing on Modern Exotics with an emphasis on modification. Classics, after all, already have a home at every other show this week.” Unlike most concours events, this one is not judged. “It is an open show for everyone to enjoy

30

Highline Autos

without the politics of judging,” Shackelford says. ModFind is the Title Sponsor for the event. “It’s a very useful app that will be launched right before the show starts,” she explains. “The app allows car people the opportunity to sell that pile of car parts they have sitting in the garage or search for that diffuser for their car they have been looking for. It’s for all makes and models of cars and trucks. “The extra cool advantage of this app is that after you list your car parts, you can ask your friends to post it on their Instagram or Facebook, and if it sells, they get a kickback,” she adds. Exhibitors include Pagani, Koenigsegg, Rimac Automobili, GMP Cars, HRE Wheels, Meguiars, Karma Automotive, Barrett-Jackson, SS Customs, Boden Autohaus and many others. Exotics on Broadway ownership also manages FuelRun, a road rally for about 100 cars that takes place three times a year including Wednesday, August 14, from Malibu to Monterey during Monterey Car Week. Another event is GoldRush Rally, an annual nine-day event that takes participants cross country covering 3,000-plus miles in their exotic cars. Before Exotics on Broadway, the only way you could see Hypercars during Monterey Car Week was at Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, a limitedadmission ticketed event, Shackelford says. “We were the first to only showcase modern exotic cars, and we do it for free so everyone can attend.” For more information on Exotics on Broadway or the other events, see exoticsonbroadway.com or call 310.809.1320. Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE CELEBRATES 69TH YEAR AUGUST 18 by David M. Brown The Bentley, Ballot and Zagato centennials will be marked and Bugatti Race & Touring Cars and Historic Hot Rod “Cover Cars” are among special classes to be honored during the 69th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Sunday, August 18, at The Lodge at Pebble Beach™, 1700 17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach. Approximately 200 of the world’s finest collector cars will be judged and awarded in 29 classes on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. The Concours also hosts some of the world’s most anticipated concept cars and debuts annually. Bentley, for example, will be officially revealing the 2020 Flying Spur this year. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a contest of elegance, not speed, explains Kandace Hawkinson, spokeswoman for the event. “Vehicles at Pebble Beach are judged and awarded for style and technical merit, history, originality and the accuracy of their preservation or restoration,” she explains. The Concours began in 1950 and, as the world’s top-ranking collector car competition, is today considered the benchmark for similar events. It first showcased new cars, based on the European model, but the focus shifted to collector cars in 1955. Racing standouts were soon included, with a dedicated class as early as 1953; dream cars and concepts appeared in the 1980s, and driving events and the importance of preservation came in the 1990s. The Sunday, August 18, schedule: Viewers may enter the field at 5:30 a.m., and at 8:30 a.m., the

34

Highline Autos

judging begins. At 10:30 a.m., the field opens to general admission spectators, and from 1:30–5 p.m., the awards are presented. Other events associated with the event include the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, a 1,500-mile trip from Kirkland, Washington, to The Lodge at Pebble Beach, August 5–14. On August 15, The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex is a noncompetition rally along sections of 17-Mile Drive and historic Highway 1, with a stop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. And, the 15th Pebble Beach RetroAuto, at The Inn at Spanish Bay ballroom, 2700 17 Mile Drive, in Pebble Beach, is Saturday, August 17, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., featuring a curated collection of collectibles and automobilia as well as luxury goods and tools. Finally, this year’s Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum, also at The Inn at Spanish Bay, August 15–17, with session hours varying daily, features prominent automotive people discussing topics of concern to collectors. The world-destination Concours raises approximately $2 million annually for local charities. Total donations have surpassed $27 million. Ticket packages are still available. All Concours tickets and ticket packages are for this event only; they do not include admission to other car activities held during Pebble Beach Automotive Week. Some of these are nonticketed, while others may require a ticket. For information on tickets and events, see pebblebeachconcours.net or email info@pebblebeachconcours.net.

1939 Porsche Type 64 Berlin-Rome, No. 3, Lot 362

RM SOTHEBY ’S MONTEREY

IS

AUGUST 15–17

by David M. Brown RM Sotheby’s Monterey returns August 15–17 to the Monterey Conference Center, 1 Portola Plaza, offering 120-plus of the world’s most valuable and sought-after motor cars. Last year, RM Sotheby’s, based in Blenheim, Ontario, sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for $48,405,000 –– a record for the most valuable car ever sold at auction. This year, four signature cars lead the docket: a 1939 Porsche Type 64 Berlin-Rome, No. 3; 1964 Aston Martin DB5; 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta; and a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT. The oldest Porsche-badged car, the only surviving Type 64, predates the company’s first production model, which became the 356. In preparation for the September 1939 Berlin-Rome race, the governmentowned Volkswagen commissioned three special long-distance racing versions of the KdF-Wagen, known inside Porsche as the Type 64. The cars were built with lightweight aluminum bodies and shared the same drivetrain and suspension as the Type 1 Volkswagen. The war cancelled the competition just as the first three cars were completed, and the Type 64 became property of the German Labor Front. The Type 64 appearing at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction was a family car driven extensively by Ferry and Ferdinand Porsche before being sold in 1948; it comes to auction from long-term meticulous stewardship by its fourth owner. The DB5 is a factory left-hand-drive example and the fifth produced and has been in the possession of the current owner since 1981 in

38

Highline Autos

highly original, never fully restored condition. Maintained by marque experts during this time, the matching-numbers car features factory options such as an overdrive transmission and a 3.77 rear axle ratio. The great British marque, in fact, will be honored August 15, when RM Sotheby’s “An Evening of Aston Martin” will showcase more than 30 of its finest road-going and track-ready sports cars. The 250 GT is one of just 40 steel-body SWB Berlinettas built in the final production run of 1962; it is gorgeously liveried in Grigio Argento on Red Connolly Vaumol leather. Offered without reserve, the fully restored Ferrari has a matchingnumbers Tipo 168/61 V-12 engine. Also without reserve, the Porsche Carrera GT is the only model finished in paint-to-sample Metallic Orange and shows just delivery mileage on the odometer. A full luggage set and the original books are included. The auction begins Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PDT and continues for approximately four to five hours until the day’s run is complete. Public preview days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. PDT. Admission to the auction is restricted to registered bidders, consignors and credentialed media. Bidder registration is $300, which includes an official auction catalog and admission for two to the preview and auction days. Admission to the public preview is $40 per person. Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION CELEBRATES IMSA HISTORY AUGUST 15–18 by David M. Brown The 50th anniversary of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) will be celebrated during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 15–18 at historic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Historic auto racing has been central to Monterey Classic Car Week for 46 years, and this year the track marks its 62nd year. Every year, approximately 70,000 fans of historic racing visit the circuit where more than 500 periodcorrect car cars compete and are displayed. One week earlier, 300-plus cars will participate in the Monterey Pre-Reunion Races, August 10–11. A day before, August 9, Monterey Classic Car Week officially begins when historic race cars leave the track with a police escort for a car show in downtown Monterey. Competitors will race in 14 groups including 1966–1985 Masters Historic Formula One, 1983– 2016 Masters Endurance Legends; IMSA Prototypes – GTP, WSC, LMP, DP; 1973–1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT; and 1981–1991 IMSA GTO/GTU. Awards include The Spirit of Monterey for the driver or entrant who excels in the spirit of the weekend; the Ken Miles Trophy, for a vintage car under 1500cc; the Rolex Award for Excellence in each category; the Gary Byrd Foundation award for a pre-war car; and the Henry Ford Trophy for the best of that marque. In addition, the Phil Remington Trophy is given to the best mechanic; the Stand 21 Trophy for the car with the most period-authentic look; the John Fitch Excellence Award for the best

Corvette; and a Best Paddock Display. Finally, the Bonhams Cup is awarded to the driver who best exemplifies the spirit of the event in featured morning race groups. IMSA is bringing several drivers who have been a part of its history, including Elliott ForbesRobinson — its first winner at Laguna Seca Raceway during the 1974 Monterey Triple Crown. In addition, great sports cars and prototypes associated with the racing group will be displayed and compete on the track. The Grand Marshal will be Hurley Haywood, the legendary driver with five wins at 24 Hours of Daytona, three at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and two at 12 Hours of Sebring. Two-time Formula One champion Mika Häkkinen will be making exhibition laps on the 2.238-mile track in the 1970 Can-Am McLaren M8D once driven by the late Dan Gurney during the noon hour on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is a legacy event of Monterey Classic Car Week. It is the only event where the incredible cars do what they are designed to do — race!” says Tim McGrane, CEO of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It is an automotive museum springing to life with over 500 cars in 14 race groups ranging from 1911 to more recent years taking to the race track.” Race schedules, entry lists and ticket information are at weathertechraceway.com/rolex-montereymotorsports-reunion. AUGUST 15–17

by David M. Brown Three classic cars representing 60 years of automotive history –– a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot #8019), 1965 Shelby Cobra CSX2328 (#8120) and a 2018 Ferrari 488 GTB (#8010) –– are among 250 vehicles to be offered at the 19thannual Russo and Steele Monterey, August 15–17, by Fisherman’s Wharf, 290 Figueroa Street. Gates open daily at 9 a.m., and the cars may be previewed until 3 p.m. The auction begins at 5 p.m. daily. Combining quality and diversity, the Russo and Steele docket includes European sports, American muscle, classics, hot rods, victorious competition cars, contemporary supercars and customs at reserve and no reserve. “It’s a spectacular time in the collector automobile industry, and Russo and Steele is excited to be part of it,” says Drew Alcazar, founder and CEO of the Scottsdale-based company, which also holds an annual Scottsdale event each January. “Because we are owned by and filled with fellow enthusiasts, Russo and Steele listens to its clientele and offers them options such as premium lots with reserves,” he explains. “This makes Russo and Steele the only auction that is continually evolving to make each experience better than the next.” Offered without reserve, the 488 GTB, Rossa Corsa Red on Crema Leather interior, is classic Ferrari: design fused with performance. Styled by Flavio Manzoni in Maranello, Italy, the Prancing Horse is powered by the mid-engine 3.9-liter twinturbocharged V-8 generating 661 horsepower and

561 lb-ft of torque. Boost is controlled at lower engine speeds to keep the turbos spooled and acceleration linear, Alcazar explains. The car has only 279 miles. One of only 267 produced this inaugural model year, the 300SL Roadster differs from the original Gullwing hardtop coupe in a number of other ways, including its large front fenders and headlights and a distinctive chrome spear along the sides. Inside, the seating was plusher, and luggage capacity increased. This Russo and Steele car has a great color combination, too: Mercedes Benz Color Code DB534 Feuerrot or Fire Red complemented with a Saddle Beige interior accented by a black soft top. “This gives it a truly striking appearance that begs to be driven,” Alcazar says. For this first year of production, the 3.0L inline-6 was raised from 8.55:1 in the coupe to 9.5:1 compression for the roadster. With an improved cam and fourth-generation Bosch fuel injection, the 300 SL generated a solid 250 horsepower. “This made the roadster an all-around more comfortable daily performer with a top speed of over 150 mph in 1958,” he notes. “It was, and is, a truly awesome ride.” General admission is $30 daily. Bidder registration is $325, which includes admission for preview day and three days of signature auctionin-the round action for the bidder and a guest. The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering

THE QUAIL, A MOTORSPORTS GATHERING MARKS 17TH-ANNUAL EVENT AUGUST 16 by David M. Brown “100 Years of Bentley Motors,” the “25th Anniversary of the McLaren F1,” and “A Tribute to the Electric Car Movement” are the featured classes for the 17th-annual The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Friday, August 16, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, California. The event is held concurrently with the 22nd Bonhams Monterey Auction, August 15 and 16. The preview days for the auction are the August 14 and 15. More than 200 classic automobiles and motorcycles from the world’s pre-eminent sports and racing brands will be displayed during The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Six international culinary, fine wine and specialty cocktail pavilions add to the lifestyle event. Presented by BMW North America, the stations are named for some of the world’s famous roads: Pacific Coast Highway, Road to Hana, Atlantic Road, Ruta 40, Guoliang and Spartanburg. Vehicles will be judged in 11 classes. Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and Best of Show is chosen by all entrants participating in the event. Last year’s winner was a magnificent 1953 Lancia Aurelia PF200C. Other awards include the Spirit of The Quail, for the car best representing the spirit of motoring; FIVA/HVA Preservation Award for the best-preserved vehicle; Custom Coachwork; and category awards for judged vehicles. Approximately 30 Bentleys will appear for the company centennial, from a 1924 3/4.5 Litre through a variety of Speed Sixes in the mid-1920s and 1930s

44

to a 2018 Supersports Convertible. A trio of McLarens include a 1998 F1. The annual Fireside Chat Series, featuring motorcar enthusiasts such as racecar drivers, designers, collectors and restoration experts will have a surprise guest. And The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles will be bringing a special “red carpet” display of Hollywood cars. Because of the high demand, tickets are allocated by a computer-generated lottery system in February. However, those who wish to be placed on a waiting list can do so through the website below. The Quail Charitable Patron Ticket allows you to bypass the waitlist, with 50 percent of the proceeds benefitting Rancho Cielo, a learning and social services center for underserved youth in Monterey County. Other charities supported by The Quail are the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, Seaside & Marina High School JROTC, North Monterey County High School Marching Band and MY Museum. “Over its 17 years of celebrations, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering has become one of the most prestigious automotive events in the world, with a truly unique atmosphere,” says Gordon McCall, director of Motorsports for The Peninsula Signature Events. “All three of our 2019 featured classes will complement this atmosphere perfectly, and we are confident they will help to make the 2019 roster one of our most impressive to date.” For more information about tickets and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, call 831.620.8879 and see signature events.peninsula.com.

1898 Riker Electric Stanhope, Lot 38

WORLDWIDE AUCTIONEERS PACIFIC GROVE AUCTION IS AUGUST 15 by David M. Brown An original 1898 Riker Electric, owned and raced by company owner, Andrew Riker, and a 1961 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur lead the docket of more than 100 stellar motorcars at Worldwide Auctioneers’ third-annual Pacific Grove Auction August 15. The event is presented oceanside at Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links, 77 Asilomar Avenue, adjacent to famous 17 Mile Drive and positioned at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula for easy access from Monterey and Pebble Beach. The sale starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, August 15, with auction preview days August 12 until the sale, beginning at 9 a.m. until the beginning of the docket. The Riker retains its original leather license plate with Riker’s initials –– the first car registered in New York State and possibly the first in the U.S. When new, the pioneer alternative-fuel vehicle was capable of 40 mph and travelling 50 miles on a charge. Riker, founder of the Riker Electric Vehicle Company and later head engineer of Locomobile and first president of the Society of Automotive Engineers, was victorious with this car in 1898 at the Mechanics Fair at Charles River Park, Massachusetts, won two years later at a race during the 1900 Paris Exposition and also took first place at the country’s first 50-mile road race on Long Island, New York. “It is one of the earliest American electric cars in existence and certainly the earliest one that raced and offered for sale in amazing original, unrestored condition, making it a perfect preservation class

car and eligible for the most celebrated events like the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run,” says Rod Egan, principal and auctioneer for the Auburn, Indian-based company. “There are very few cars of this historic significance in existence and certainly hardly any that are available for sale.” Marking the 100th anniversary of Bentley this year, the Flying Spur, one of six left-hand-drive models, features rare James Young Alloy coachwork and factory air-conditioning. Other consignments include a 1947 Cisitalia D46 Single-Seater Monoposto, raced in 1948 by Roger Loyer, with original chassis, engine and body; a 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS, a superbly restored NARDI-optioned car, including dual Weber carburetors, with Coachwork by Touring; and a numbers-matching 1931 Cadillac V-12 Roadster, accompanied by GM Cadillac Heritage Certificate. “We look forward to welcoming friends and customers back out to Pacific Grove in August for another outstanding event at a venue now widely acknowledged to be one of the finest on the Monterey Peninsula, with the best views in town,” Egan says. The Pacific Grove Auction is open to the public. Admission for two with a catalog is $100 or spectator/preview admission at $35 per person. Pacific Grove residents are offered free admission with ID. California Automobile Museum

GreatGarages CALIFORNIA AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM: A WINDSHIELD VIEW OF CALIFORNIA HISTORY by David M. Brown Modern California was made by cars. The California Automobile Museum was made to celebrate that. “The museum’s collection represents California history through the windshield of an automobile,” says Carly Starr, curator of the museum, 2200 Front Street, about a mile south of Old Sacramento on the edge of downtown. The museum contains approximately 160–170 cars, with 125 on regular display. About 45 percent of that collection is owned by the museum. The rest of the cars are from the monthly changing Car Club display (five), 20 cars are for sale, and 15–20 cars are displayed in exhibits that change every five months. Currently, 25 microcars are being shown. In 1982, a few automotive-minded Sacramentans decided to open a car museum and founded the California Vehicle Foundation, which operates the museum. The first car was a 1938 Buick Sedan in 1983, donated before the opening. When the museum did open four years later, it displayed primarily Fords from Edward Towe; this collection was later sold. By the late 1990s, a wider variety of cars were added; then the museum shifted its theme to the cars of California.

50

Highline Autos

The earliest is a replica of the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, the oldest original is a 1900 Locomobile Steam Car, and the oldest car owned by the museum is a 1909 Cartercar Model H Touring. “Our primary exhibits range from the turn of the century through the 1980s, but we have additional displays for racing and alternative propulsion that go into later decades,” Starr says. The most recent cars are two “green” vehicles, a 2011 Nissan LEAF and 2011 Honda Clarity FCX (fuel cell). The most recent in the museum’s collection that is not a racing or an alternative- propulsion car is a 1990 Mazda Miata. Preserving the automotive history of a state is a unique theme among car museums. Why a 1929 Stutz Sedan and a 1989 Toyota Camry? “They are both important to automotive history and are both relevant to California drivers in those time periods, for different reasons,” she says. “We pride ourselves in having a wide variety of cars, including regular everyday cars that someone might recognize their grandparent driving or taking themselves for a road trip, in addition to having high-end cars from throughout history.”

mobiles, which were expensive in contrast to the gas-powered ones, she adds.

Let’s visit some Golden State cars. • 1912 Cadillac Model 30 Torpedo –– The specs: Four cylinders, 286 cubic inches, 40 horsepower; 3-speed sliding gear; two-wheel mechanical brakes; 3,700 pounds. Sticker: $1,900, about three times the cost of a basic Ford Model T. This model was the first American car to have a production electric starter. Beyond just the new technology, automobiles became more accessible as a result of this. Cranking an engine to start it, for example, was difficult for many women because of the strength required and the dangers. Even today, those attempting a crank are forewarned how to do it to avoid having a hand or lower-arm bone broken. “As electric starters became more and more common in automobiles by the 1920s, it also allowed for more and more women to drive, helping to support women’s suffrage movements as well as the flapper and Roaring ’20s culture,” Starr says. The success of the electric starter on affordable vehicles also helped to end the success of early electric auto-

• 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe Roadster –– L head 4-cylinder, 200 cubic inches, 40 horsepower; 3speed manual transmission; mechanical drum brakes; 2,155 pounds. Sticker: $430. Because so many of them were made, the museum features a number of Ford Model Ts and Model As. “We have some that are for preservation and static display only, but we also encourage engagement in this museum, and this Model A represents that,” Starr says. “We have a Model T and three other cars that visitors can sit inside of and take pictures and experience what sitting in an old car was like.” This Model A is one of a dozen that are part of the museum’s “Road Crew” outreach program in which cars are driven to community and educational events and used for Sunday drives for visitors to enjoy rides in classic cars, she explains. • 1933 Lincoln KB 255 Sedan –– L head V-12, 448 cubic inches, 150 horsepower; 3-speed manual

transmission; mechanical drum brakes; approximately 7,000 pounds. Sticker: about $4,500. This car was first owned by A.P. Giannini, who helped support many state industries, especially agriculture, film and infrastructure, and founded Bank of Italy, which became Bank of America. “He was a pioneer in providing mortgages, auto loans and installment credit to California’s poor and immigrants who had not been served by banks,” Starr explains. He also used this Lincoln to travel around California during the Depression, helping to keep banks open and credit available; a safe is in the back seat where a jump seat would normally be. This car was also one of the first group of vehicles to cross the Golden Gate Bridge when it opened in 1937, she notes. • 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Sedan –– L head V-12, 292 cubic inches, 120 horsepower; 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive; hydraulic drum brakes; 3,710 pounds. Sticker: $1,439. This luxury car is known for its streamline styling

and helping to bring the horizontal grille into fashion. This particular one has been in the same family since purchase. Bill Clark worked in his father’s Ford dealership in Auburn, California. He bought this car after seeing one in the Ford display at the 1939 World’s Fair in San Francisco and falling in love with it. This car is still owned by his daughter, Linda. She has numerous memories, including being embarrassed by it in high school, Starr says. (Today, she would be campus center stage with this classy sedan.) It’s entirely original, with one paint job a couple of decades ago in the original color, and has had only necessary repairs. • 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe –– OHV Inline 6-cylinder, 235 cubic inches, 115 horsepower; “Powerglide” 2-speed automatic; hydraulic drum brakes; 3,310 pounds. Sticker: $1,820. Even with the higher Bel Air trim, this is still an excellent example of the average 1950s car. “A family doing a road trip in 1953 might have been driving a car just like this,” Starr says.

1972 Datsun 240Z

This Chevy was donated to the museum more than a decade ago and not used, but recently the museum’s volunteer “pit crew” mechanics got it running again. “Thanks to their efforts, it will likely be joining our fleet of ‘Road Crew’ cars soon,” she says. • 1972 Datsun 240Z –– SOHC inline 6-cylinder; 146 cubic inches, 151 horsepower; 4-speed manual transmission; front disk, rear drum brakes; 2,300 pounds. Sticker: $4,105. Celebrating 50 years in 2019, the Z car epitomizes the change that was happening with the Japanese automotive industry. “For many years, Americans did not think Japanese cars could be cool or be reliable for a good price,” Starr says, noting that Japanese motorcycles were by contrast popular. The 240Zs sold quickly and were extremely popular from the start. This car has been owned by the same person since 1974 and is almost entirely original. “The wheels are different (he still has the original ones), some of the upholstery needed replacement, and he put louvers on the rear window to keep his son cool, but other than that, the car is just immaculately cared for. If you can believe it, it was a daily driver for a number of years,” she says. • 1981 Chrysler Imperial FS –– Engine: OHV V-8; 318 cubic inches, 140 horsepower; 3-speed automatic; front disk, rear drum brakes; 3,968 pounds. Sticker: $20,569.

54

Highline Autos

American car manufacturers were struggling by the 1980s –– Chrysler in particular receiving the famous government bailout. The compact K-cars were expected to save Chrysler, but company president Lee Iacocca also offered luxury models, such as this luxurious Imperial to challenge Cadillac. A limited Frank Sinatra (FS) edition was built: Iacocca and Sinatra were friends. But large luxury cars were declining in popularity, and only 516 of these were built in 1981 and 1982. This car also further exemplifies how Detroit was unable to compete with Japanese cars. The trim on this Imperial said “fuel injected,” but this was so faulty Chrysler had to provide for the installation of carburetors to these cars. “In fact,” Starr says, “the mileage on the odometer has an asterisk because that is the number of miles since that modification, not since new.” The museum is open every day except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day. Hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. year round. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, students and military, $5 for under 18, and free for under 5 and museum members.
