Remembering the great New Zealand driver, a 2014 McLaren P1 (Lot 1413) is the world’s first hybrid supercar and one of only 375 built worldwide. Commissioned to meet USA EPA and DOT requirements, the P1, chassis 24, is finished in McLaren Formula 1 racing team’s “Racing Chrome.” With 903 bhp –– 727 bhp from the 3.8L Twin-Turbo V8 and 176 bhp from the electric engine –– it’s capable of 0–62 mph in 2.8 seconds, topping out at 217 mph. The name of another great racer will be mentioned often during the 50th- anniversary celebration: Shelby. A 1965 Ford Shelby GT350 (Lot 1381), “#257” is finished in Wimbledon White and includes a fiberglass hood, Shelby American-installed KONI shocks, override traction bars, aluminum intake manifold, Cobra oil pan and exhaust headers. In 2019, this stellar pony car received a Division 1 Class restoration and, two years later, it won two Concours Premier Awards from the SAAC-46

Originally sold in 1967 by Paradise Ford of Scottsdale, Arizona, Shelby Registry-documented CSX 3356 (Lot 1397) has a 427ci side-oiler V-8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor; in the early 1990s, Mike McCluskey completed a full restoration including metallic blue paint with white stripes. A 1969 Shelby GT500 Fastback (Lot 1317.1), one of only 1157 built, is a California “Black Plate” car that has received a show-quality restoration. The original owner ordered it with a Candyapple Red exterior, Black Clarion Knit/Corinthian vinyl high-back bucket seats, 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission and the optional 3:50 axle ratio. Matching Carroll’s original car, this Guardsman Blue aluminum-bodied 1965 is powered by a 427ci V-8 fitted with the same twin Paxton superchargers feeding dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors on a cross-ram intake manifold. The engine is mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission. “Carroll Shelby’s name is iconic in the collector car world, and we’re honored to continue to carry on his legacy by celebrating and auctioning these amazing vehicles bearing his name during our 50th anniversary celebration,” Jackson says. “The Shelby Cobras and Shelby Mustangs on the docket in Scottsdale this year include some of the finest examples we’ve ever seen.” Other outstanding cars include a 1967 Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro 427/450 (Lot 1407); 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe (Lot 1415); a 1959 MercedesBenz 300SL Roadster (Lot 1414); and an LT4-powered 1969 Pontiac GTO Custom Convertible (Lot 1349). Also 1969 vintage, the Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS “Cutaway” Coupe (Lot 1369) is one of only two known “cutaway” promotional display cars used that year to promote the 1969 Camaro model. Featuring one of the original GM straight-6 cutaway engines, it’s been privately kept for 52 years. Finally, the last Buick Grand National will be sold (Lot 1347). Built on December 11, 1987, the “mighty 6” ended General Motors mid-size rear-wheel-drive G Platform and also marked the closing of GM’s Pontiac, Michigan, assembly plant, opened in 1927. With just 33 miles, the 3.8-liter turbocharged black-on-gray legend has been perfectly preserved in its climate-controlled storage space in Louisiana.
Fab Collections Multiple car collections exemplify vehicle diversity, a long-time theme at Barrett-Jackson. The Mile-High Collection is a special offering with its depth and diversity –– the product of a true enthusiast’s heart and soul. The 13-car selection from the vast GM North American Heritage Collection comprises two Camaros, nine Corvettes and two Cadillac CTS’s. The full collection in Sterling Heights, Michigan, includes industry firsts, such as the first electric self-starter on the 1912 Cadillac; the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle, the 1966 Electro-van; and milestone production vehicles such as the first production 1966 Olds Toronado, featuring frontwheel drive. Both Camaros in this 13-car offering from the collection have fewer than 300 miles. A 2020 CC Camaro (Lot 421.1), VIN 001, has the 6.2-liter V-8 with a manual. A 2022 Cadillac CT5 Blackwing (Lot 1260.1) carries a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 with 668hp and a 6-speed manual. Included in the sale of this Stingray is a two-day driving class from the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Motorsports Resort & Country Club just outside of Las Vegas. The 13-car Flying Marlin Collection is led by a 2019 Lamborghini Huracán Performante Spyder (Lot 1406), in Nero Nemesis flat black. The coupe version set eight lap records and the fastest production car lap time around the Nürburgring. The 5.2-liter V-10 wallops out 640 horsepower and accomplishes 0–60 mph in less than three seconds. And, with its 760-horsepower supercharged “Predator” engine, a Velocity Blue 2020 Shelby GT500 (Lot 1271) conquers the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds, makes 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and has a limited top speed of 180 mph. In addition, the 2015 Porsche 911 Turbo (Lot 1275) has been upgraded by Evolution Motorsports. Its 3.8-liter flat-6, originally rated at 580 horsepower, now develops a dyno-proven 771 horsepower and 773 ft/lbs of torque on 100 octane. “Nobody displays the diversity of the collector car world

Switching Gears in the New Year Tucson-Based Crown Concepts Leans Into the New Normal in the Car Restoration Industry written by Nick Esquer During the pandemic, a lot of people dived into new hobbies and habits, or old ones they had abandoned years before. With everyone adjusting to the new normal of spending more time inside, things like streaming movies and ordering everything online got a little old. One hobby that did see a pickup during the pandemic was car restoration, or just motormania in general.
Superperformance inventory, engine room, management offices, service bays, All-wheel dyno, powder coating room, and a machine shop where mechanics tinker on cars with sufficient detail and precision.
Classic car owners and racecar enthusiasts began to get back behind the wheel of hollowed out shells of their garaged project cars and realized they needed some professional help to move their tasks along. That’s where Tucson-based Crown Concepts came into the picture.
It’s in this area where owners Curtis Brown and Joey Martin oversee the restoration house’s projects. Crown Concepts is a perfect spot for auto fanatics to bask in the inventory of mint cars and handcrafted workmanship, including current projects like a ’61 Willie’s Jeep custom off road and a ’69 GS Buick with an LS3 crate engine; cars with owners who are wanting to bring their rides out from the doldrums of the pandemic.

While the pandemic has been kind to Crown Concepts in keeping business flowing, it has also presented a number of challenges that has made things a little more difficult to work with, but presented a new opportunity to be creative.

But apart from beefing up muscle cars, Crown Concepts can also be found on the racetrack, especially APEX in Maricopa, where it offers specialized trackside services to help racecar enthusiasts stay ready to roll. From owners looking for an oil change to quick tune-ups to full-service requests that require pickup and drop off for hands-off clients, Crown Concepts does it all.
Ideally, Loa and crew would like to see these things done in 9-12 months. Over the past year, it’s gotten more difficult because of waiting on getting parts from suppliers due to the supply chain issues born out of the pandemic’s slowing effect. “The biggest effect is having individual resources on hand. From metal and steel to aluminum, having it available is tough. Something that would’ve usually taken a week can take up to three months now. The project is stalled until we get a specific part, for instance. So, we’ve adapted and worked on other parts of the project while we wait, essentially,” explains Loa.
“We’re doing fuel, tires, maintenance, parts and replacement, etc. Anything we can’t do at the track, we can take care of it back at our shop,” adds Loa. “We do vehicle storage here as well. We can pick up your car wherever you are, take care of the maintenance, then drop it back off.” As the pandemic begins to slow and more people get back on the road, Crown Concepts will be looking to the future while it continues to do what it does best. He was born in New York of Haitian parents, went to Haiti and then returned to New York. His dad was in the military, so the family moved to bases in California and Seattle. In August of 2019, he came to Arizona for a job opportunity. O’Brien was born and raised in Yonkers and came to Arizona to attend ASU.

This gated hillside estate celebrates Hacienda-style architecture in the Silverleaf golf community of north Scottsdale. The 6.250-acre mountainside sanctuary, 10738 East Diamond Rim, offers both privacy and connectedness to the lush High Sonoran Desert. On the west side of the McDowell Mountains and backing to the country’s largest municipal nature preserve, the 15,603-square-foot home was designed by acclaimed architect John Sather, AIA, AICP, senior partner of SWABACK Architects + Planners, and built by the distinguished Salcito Custom Homes, both Scottsdale. For Sather, the home is timeless in design and its vision as a small village. “Given the size of this house, the design concept was to break up the masses,” he explains. “With five separate buildings, the space created between the buildings becomes as important as the interior space.” Outside, the linked courtyards add to a spirit of quiet luxury. “These communal courtyards act not only as social spaces but as indoor/outdoor circulation. Given the hillside location, the abundance of rock helps integrate the home in its mountain setting. The terracing of the forms down the mountain also helps give the collection of spaces the feeling of a small mountainside village,” he adds, noting that the 43-year-old firm served as the land planner for Silverleaf almost a quarter century ago.

Included in the three-level home are a 3,109-square-foot standalone casita and a pool house straddling the infinityedge heated pool and spa; seven bedrooms, four in the main house; 11.5 bathrooms; a six-car garage; a standalone spa cottage; and an office that could become another bedroom. The lower level is a partial walk-out finished basement. Sather notes that the estate would be a perfect match for a car collector; it has exterior areas to show cars in a courtyard setting as well as extended-length garage spaces. “The new owners could certainly explore expanding the number of garages given the size of the property,” he adds. When they envisioned their Southwest home, the owners were detail-focused, specifying the best materials and the most astute workmanship. At the entrance, for example, the imposing arched front door with seeded-glass panels was custom crafted of reclaimed materials by La Puerta of Santa Fe, and the two-story entryway features a custom chandelier by trade-only designer Paul Ferrante. The woodwork throughout is particularly impressive. This includes distressed hickory floors in the main house, which complement the Venetian plasterwork. The flooring required four months to create and install, the owner told The Wall Street Journal’s Libertina Brandt for a January 11, 2022, feature about the home. Throughout are Douglas fir beamed ceilings.

Imported from Italy, the Albertini windows and glass-paneled doors, with their rich burnt-pine finish, intensify this design robustness. The company deliberately sized the three decorative panels on the interior doors so that the door levers center on the door rail. In addition, Tucson-based Taber & Co., known for its bespoke mesquite woodwork, crafted the in-wall cabinets for the living room; the custom interior doors are also solid mesquite. In the expansive living room, the fireplace surround was entirely assembled from book-matched marble slabs to great effect for your guests. The owners told Brandt this room and the home overall have performed magnificently for charitable fundraisers. With a breakfast bar and room, the eat-in kitchen features gas and electric appliances, a reverse osmosis system and a walkin pantry. You won’t need cumbrous dish racks as the twin custom granite sinks incorporate drain boards chiseled into the countertop. And, to reduce back strain when rolling dough, chopping vegetables or doing other prep work, the center

island is at an above-standard 42 inches. Further, outlets are faux painted to match the surrounding walls and backsplashes. Other spaces are family and great rooms; a library with a built-in bookcase; an Arizona room/lanai; a loft; and a workshop in the large garage. On the lower level, the owner, a movie producer in one of his careers, designed a $500,000 10-seat tiered theater with state-of-the-art projection and sound systems including 17 speakers and a 160-inch screen, designed by world-class engineering firm Shen Milsom & Wilke. “As a movie producer, I was determined to build a state-ofthe-art theater because I want to experience films under the best possible circumstances and in the best possible way,” one of the owners told Brandt. “It has been acoustically engineered so that you don’t hear noises from the rest of the house.” Next to the theater is a 2,000-bottle wine cellar; the stone walls help maintain ideal temperature and humidity levels for

Also on this “play” level is a game room that can accommodate many toys such as, currently, a pool table, juke box, Skee-Ball alley, Harley-themed pinball machine and poker table. These trees form a natural canopy and add to the home’s solitude. The fountains are antiques, and an inviting bougainvillea-lined walkway made from reclaimed stone leads to the main entrance. Technological upgrades include Energy Star-qualified equipment, a recirculation pump, a gas tankless water heater and owned security and smart home systems. Scottsdale is a bonus. No longer just a winter getaway, the city is attracting more and more full-time residents, especially since the onset of COVID and its variants. “We’re car owners ourselves, and we know that these vehicles are your passion, hobbies and in some cases, investments. They are often irreplaceable one-of-kinds and customs,” says Evans, who originally planned the facility to include space for the couple’s varying collection of 12–15 cars.
He had three cars before he was 18: a ’69 Triumph GT6 at 14 which he still owns, a Fiat X19, and a customized ’77 Toyota Celica. “I wanted to buy a ’69 Chevelle SS 396, but my dad said no,” he recalls with a smile. “I likely would have wrapped it around a telephone pole at 15.”

His dad wasn’t a farmer at heart, and he wanted to move to warm Arizona. After that happened in the early 1980s, Ron and Pam built their healthcare company while he also collected, bought and sold cars and acquired a small facility in the Airpark. After selling the business, he realized he wasn’t ‘wired to retire,’ so the couple acquired the land for today’s Vault Auto Storage of Scottsdale.

Evans was raised on a farm in a small town of 500 people in Southern Illinois. His car passion started small and grew fast. “I got my first Hot Wheels in 1968 when I was 18 months old. A neighbor farmer had an original 289 Cobra which I

Cars and the Dream to Change Healthcare Long before Dr. Nima Ghadimi, founder of Scottsdale Physicians Group (SPG), set out on a mission to change healthcare, he became fascinated with cars. Growing up in Iran, he never missed an edition of Science Magazine so that he could read all about them. From classics like a 1969 Ford Mustang fastback to the Vector W2 twin turbo, Dr. Ghadimi was hooked.
An internist by training, Ghadimi founded SPG in 2003, focusing his efforts on rethinking healthcare and how it’s delivered.
Prior to receiving his medical degree, Ghadimi “flipped” cars to make extra cash, and even worked as a used car salesman. His favorite of all was 1985 Mercedes 190 with the Zender package in all white.
SPG provides innovative, best-in-class healthcare in a variety of settings, from hospitals to more than 70 facilities, including nursing, independent living, group homes, and more. It also provides in-home healthcare to patients around the state.
“It was absolutely beautiful. I sold it right before I entered medical school, and I still wish I had that car,” Ghadimi said. Throughout the years, Ghadimi estimates that he has owned over 200 cars. Some he flipped, some he drove, and others he just kept. As a child, little did he know that he would revolutionize healthcare using cars and technology.

In 2010, father and son team, Paul and Jason Phillips, opened their first Toy Barn in Cave Creek, Cave Creek and Peakview roads, to provide luxury garage spaces for cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, jet skis and RVs. This January, they will break ground on their sixth location, and the second at the Scottsdale Airpark, as Arizona celebrates its annual car-auction week.
“When we started the company, almost by accident, we never thought we would expand to six locations, but Arizona has such a robust car culture,” Paul says. You own your Toy Barn unit, similar to a condominium; it is governed by CC&Rs and an owners association. Prices vary by location. Floorplans are from 800 to 4,800 square feet. All units feature minimum 20-foot-high ceilings with heavy-duty garage doors, entry/exit doors, plumbing, climate control and Wi-Fi. And, each community is monitored, including 24-hour surveillance and gates requiring private codes. “You can be sure your inventory, tools and valuable possessions are always secure,” Jason says.
“When we started out during the Great Recession, we wanted to meet the demand from downsizing home owners and people who could use more space for their valuable cars,” Jason says. One of the popular get-togethers are the Cars and Coffee open houses twice a month, at Chandler on the third Saturday and Lone Mountain on the fourth, 7–10 a.m., rain or shine. Events such as these and the owners’ camaraderie make Toy Barns special places. “Without our membership, we would just be another boring storage facility,” he says.
Owners are enthusiastic. Alpio A. Barbara, president of Redwood General Tire, based in Redwood City, California, and Alpios at Troon, an event center in north Scottsdale, owns five Toy Barn suites at the Peak View and Lone Mountain North locations. He began the Cars & Coffee event at the latter site. “Your cars don’t sit outside, and they’re well cared for,” he says. “They’re neat and clean, and you can meet with your buddies any time you want. They’re a country club for cars.”
While building the second Scottsdale Airpark site, the Phillips’ are expanding the Chandler and Lone Mountain North locations. The 119,400-square-foot Lone Mountain North campus will have 97 units and the country’s first condocovered-parking stalls, he says.

To do this, she and her Scottsdale team extend the traditional interior design scope beyond furnishings, artwork and lighting to include multi-sensuous elements, natural components, technology and ancient insights.
The firm’s “Eco-Luxe Design Experience” helps homeowners prioritize their health and sustainability goals and then guides them through the design and construction process to achieve the home they desire with the minimum of stress. “I design each home with the sensitivities and priorities of the individual homeowner in mind,” she explains. “Some people are more cautious about the things they want in their home, and we respect that. Others want all the cool features that tech can create, such as green walls, AI-connected exercise equipment and smart home components, and we respect that, too.”
“My general philosophy is to do everything with balance, and that means technology can provide great benefits and comfort and convenience features, but the old ways also were developed with many years of practice and have much to offer as well,” says Shively, who pioneered “green,” health-focused interior design in the Valley 16 years ago.

The elements in Feng Shui are also important. “Water is fluid and flexible, earth is solid and stable and wood is growing and expansive. Metal is often used to represent money (coins) and can serve to increase wealth,” she says. “Fire is dynamic, and it may be real fire such as a fireplace or it might be represented by the orange and red.”
In her interiors, Shively incorporates what she terms “common sense” Feng Shui (Chinese, “wind-water”); its goal is to maximize the positive flow of energy or “Qi.” She says: “You can intuitively feel when the energy is off, and frequently it is something as simple as where the furniture has been placed.”

For example, Feng Shui principles suggest placing a desk so your back is supported by a wall rather than with an open door or large window behind you; this eliminates a sense of vulnerability while you work. And, locate a bed in the room so that the door does not align with the foot of the bed: “A bedroom should feel secure and intimate, but not confining,” she says. And, place a mirror so that you can see around a corner in a situation to help alleviate an unsettled, uneasy feeling."
Nature must be part of a healthy centered home. “Nature is part of our humanity, and without some awareness and experience of that divine mystery man ceases to be man,” wrote naturalist Henry Beston. For example, to maximize views, Shively incorporates the beauty and harmony of the outdoors, such as with natural lighting from large windows. “But we may utilize automation to control the window coverings to reduce the heat gain those large windows can produce,” she adds. “We can use natural materials such as woven grass for those window shades, which again provides a connection to nature, interesting texture, and at the same time anti-microbial benefits.”
Colors are significant in Feng Shui; they invoke different energies and help produce specific emotional results. Pantone’s color of the year, for instance, is Very Peri, combining violet-red and blue undertones. The company says it represents the “merging of the physical and digital worlds over recent years. It is a joyful and imaginative color, inviting creativity.”
One of her go-to resources is Plant Solutions, Joe Zazzera’s 41-year-old Scottsdale-based company, which specializes in providing natural connections to home interiors.
The more traditional palette provides this energy, Shively explains. Red, for example, is powerful for love, relationships and good fortune. Warm neutral colors are calming and uplifting. And blue and green are soothing and evoke the element of water.

can create a calm environment or a lively dynamic one and can even change the way we perceive color, making the same room feel cool or warm. “LED lighting systems can be programmed to change according to the activity we are doing or the mood we want to evoke,” she says.
He continues: “But now, after all of these years, we’ve begun to ask, ‘Why have we done this? Why have we not incorporated nature in all aspects of our lives? Why shouldn’t I have nature indoors? Why shouldn’t we be connecting with nature?’”
Shively frequently uses Ketra, whose products include LED luminaires and lamps, controls, software and driver chip technology. Its Natural Light product gradually shifts in color, temperature and intensity to mimic the sun, making spaces light filled. Ketra also offers a high-definition palette, with 16.7 million colors, including pastels, saturated colors and whites. Founded in 2009, Ketra was acquired ten years later by industry leader Lutron Electronics of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania.
The natural connection is innate; it’s in our DNA, he explains. “We talk with our clients about bringing this connection indoors to help their wellness and fitness.” Zazzera notes that studies show that our levels of cortisol, the steroid hormone that increases stress, decrease when we are in nature. Moreover, at work or even in a home office, if we have indoor plants, absenteeism rates reduce and productivity grows.
She acquires the product through a number of Valley sources: Cyber Technology Group and Acoustic Design, both Scottsdale, and Desert Sound and Security in Phoenix.
More complex, expensive gestures include green walls, with living plants, and moss walls, created with organic moss that has been harvested and constructed in the company’s Scottsdale warehouse and then installed by the company. “They are both beautiful installations but require maintenance,” he says. “You have to commit to do it.” Triumphant Technology
Maximizing natural light is very popular, largely because of its biophilic design, says Kathryn Bertmaring, Southwest account supervisor for Lutron. “As more and more consumers seek dynamic lighting that can shift throughout the day and mimic the patterns of the sun, they’ll need tunable systems that can move along the black body curve, which represents the total range of white light found in nature, like the range offered in Ketra light sources.”

Delos is a custom multi-component health and wellness product composed of water purification, air purification and Ketra (Circadian rhythm lighting from Lutron) as well as a Live wall bringing the nature element inside the home(delos.com).
But, she notes, technology can assist in a balanced interior design, but it can also create unintended issues. She advises common sense. “A holistic or balanced approach to designing something as important as our homes is needed to ensure that we feel comfortable, safe, and healthy while in our private spaces,” Shively says. “Working with a professional who can guide you through decisions about which aspects of technology to include and which to avoid is very helpful.”
“The purification gets down to the microbial level, so Delos is not just an air or water filter; it is a process,” says Christopher Matthews, the company principal. “The Lutron Ketra product can get to most any color temperature, which allows for warm/dim outside mid-day color temps and then evening warm/dim temps to calm the body down.”
Sometimes, simple fixes are the best. To reduce exposure to EMFs, for example, switch off Wi-Fi at night or move electronic devices such as your cell phones or tablets from the bedroom. And, she says, “Whole-home air filtration systems are great, but simply opening a window can also work really well to replace dirty air with fresh air.”
