Rolls-Royce products enjoy an expansive lifetime, ultimately becoming timeless expressions of good taste, beauty and luxurious perfection. Phantom occupies a unique, pinnacle position in this regard, being revered for its timeless elegance.
The eighth-generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored RollsRoyce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. Indeed, it is not about what should be changed, but in fact, what should be preserved and protected.
A NEW EXPRESSION
The most obvious and important feature to be retained is Phantom’s commanding presence. This has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille. This gives Phantom a new and assertive modernity, reflecting its driver-focused character.
A subtle geometric change to the Pantheon Grille makes the ‘RR’ Badge of Honour and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille itself is now illuminated, a feature debuted and popularised in Ghost. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom's night-time presence.
Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad c-pillar, the latter giving greater privacy for occupants. The silhouette preserves the elegant key lines running from the Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapering rear tail. The ‘split-belt’ line begins at the front fender and curves
gently towards the rear door, emphasising the car's long dash-to-axle proportions, before falling gently towards the lantern-like rear lamps. The heavily undercut 'waft line' creates a strong shadow, visually signalling the marque's unequalled ‘Magic Carpet Ride’.
The side profile is further enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available to commission in a fully or part-polished finish. Alternatively, Phantom may be graced with a truly elegant disc wheel, recalling the romance of 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, perfectly encapsulating the sense of flight on land.
Responding to Phantom clients who have previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned. This aesthetic now enables Rolls-Royce to transform Phantom into the lightest of light or the darkest of dark appearances.
Phantom’s sumptuous interior remains almost unaltered: the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker, providing a more connected and immediate point of contact for the owner-driver.
Phantom and Phantom Extended have distinct characters of their own, representing two different seats of power. Phantom is now predominantly favoured by the ever-increasing number of clients wishing to be in the driving seat themselves. For those preferring to command the road from the rear seat, Phantom Extended offers the definitive super-luxurious chauffeur-driven experience.
ROLLS-ROYCE CONNECTED
Now, Phantom includes the debut of ‘Rolls-Royce Connected’. This enables the owner to send an address directly to the motor car from Whispers, the Rolls-Royce private-members’ Application, providing seamless navigation to an event, restaurant, dealership or even the Home of Rolls-Royce itself.
‘Rolls-Royce Connected’ also displays the motor car’s location, security status and current 'health' condition on Whispers; at the touch of a button, the owner can contact a preferred dealership for any servicing requirements or information about the car.

After a three-year pandemic hiatus, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance triumphantly returned to Ellen Scripps Browning Park in the La Jolla Cove April 22–24 with 141 cars and eight motorcycles judged in 24 classes on Sunday; a preliminary Ferrari Friday and Tour d’Elegance Saturday morning; gettogethers both nights; and even a vintage air parade, also on Sunday.
Presented by LPL Financial and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, the event, “World Class Cars, World Class Experience,” honored the 113th anniversary of Bugatti, with the Best of Show award going to a 1931 Type 51 Coupe from the famed Nethercutt Collection. Two other marque representatives were honored: a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Petite Royale owned by Richard Adams, which received the Aubrey Taylor Upholstery Award, and Lilian McCain’s 1931 Bugatti Type 57, the LPL Summet Best of Marque Award.
“Bugatti has such a long and rich history, and for us to celebrate this brand by showcasing the first Bugatti built only added to the excitement of the return of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. Like Bugatti, we are proud of what we’ve accomplished as well as what the future holds for this amazing Concours,” says Michael Dorvillier, co-chair of the event.
The event also showcased this year’s featured model, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe, “Gullwing.” On Sunday, Charlie Duvall’s 1956 edition won Outstanding Post-War vehicle.
To begin the automotive weekend, the first Ferrari Friday featured 80 registered Prancing Stallions, free for all attendees. “It was a beautiful spectacle that guests to the area enjoyed immensely, he says.
At the invite-only Chairman’s Happy Hour that evening, collectors, sponsors, volunteers and supporters enjoyed talking about great cars. “It was a huge success,” Dorvillier says of the event, hosted by the La Jolla Cove House.
On Saturday, 178 car aficionados in 90 cars cruised San Diego County for the La Jolla Tour d’Elegance. And that evening, the magical La Cabaret du Concours featured dress-to-impress attire, entertainment cabaret style, great food, a successful silent and live auction and dancing. “The build-out of the event was playful and colorful, highlighted by expert mixologists creating beautiful craft cocktails with playful unexpected garnishes,” he recalls.
And on Sunday for the culminating show, 10,000 attendees enjoyed the Concours automobiles, curated by an all-volunteer committee led by Dorvillier, Robert F. Kerner Jr., co-chair of the Concours, and Chief Judge Nigel Matthews. Among the other award-winners was Valerie and Aaron Weiss’s 1933 Marmon Sixteen, which won in the Outstanding Pre-War division, and Jeff and Kim Phillips’s 1936 Pierce Arrow Twelve Town Car, the Pacific Sotheby's Timeless Elegance Award.
Proceeds will benefit the La Jolla Historical Society, which preserves the history of the village of La Jolla, and several local community nonprofit partners each year.
“After a three-year layoff due to the pandemic, we welcomed back the automobile hobbiest and fans with a spectacular 2022 Concours d ‘Elegance. The fourth-annual Hypercar Invitational returns to Laguna Seca Raceway in California for three days, June 9–12, showcasing the automotive industry’s super stars, the fastest of the fastest, the best of the best: Bugatti, Pagani, Zenvo, Hennessey, Aston Martin’s Valkyrie AMR Pro and others.
Dealer sponsors are also bringing cars to the Monterey track famous for historic racing. These include O’Gara Coach, Boardwalk Pagani and Lamborghini, Luxury Collection, Miller Motorcars and Ferrari of Silicon Valley.
“Hypercar International is a unique experiential automotive marketing concept, a dynamic launch platform that unites a hand-selected group of top collectors and sports car buyers,” says Alessandro Borroni, the event founder.
“Over three perfectly curated days, our partner luxury brands can share their stories and form powerful relationships with our selected guests during luxury dinners as well as on track during unlimited sound days at the famous Laguna Seca," he says. Sound days? Laguna Seca has very strict sound limits for most days of the year, but HI is including two unlimited sound days, which are normally only offered to racing series like Indy. In this way, vehicles such as Lamborghinis, Paganis and naturally aspirated race cars can run freely at Laguna Seca, Borroni explains.
“Guests will also enjoy the unique opportunity of being able to safely run their cars to high speed on a one mile-pluslong runway at nearby Salinas Airport," he adds.
Borroni started the event three years ago because he wanted a more experiential way to unite car enthusiasts and collectors with the finest sports car brands. “The idea of the traditional auto show, where the car is sitting on a static stand, is almost something of the past in my mind. Our inspiration is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and our vision is to create an event like this for the U.S. market, so that car companies can bring their cars to a beautiful outdoor environment and guests can actually experience the cars.”
His car passion began in native Milan, Italy, near the historic Monza F1 track; until he was 12, he lived in Great Britain,
another motorsports-loving country. “My parents always thought I would ‘outgrow’ this interest, but it has only grown,” he says. “I love the people, the machines, and especially the entrepreneurs and founders who take the risks required to start and promote businesses in the automotive space.”
The event is kept small. Last year, Borroni and crew hosted about 100 hypercar owners, who are invited by sponsors and existing guests; a few new entries are invited each year. Owners may bring as many of their cars as they want to enjoy. Among those in 2021 were McLaren F1s and Senna GTRs; a Howmet TX jet car from 1968; an original RUF Yellowbird; a one-off Isdera Commendatore 112i; nine Bugatti Chirons; and one of the two carbon Bugatti EB1110s.
“This is a rare opportunity to be surrounded by so many passionate owners of this caliber of car, gathered at one of the most iconic tracks,” says Parris Mullins, motorsport director, O’Gara Motorsport.
For this year, sponsors have scheduled technical presentations; a watch sponsor with Roger Dubuis will be doing a haute horologerie luxury watch-making class; and, on the track, Randy Pobst will be performing the shake-down testing of the Pike’s Peak Tesla Unplugged car which he will take to Colorado to compete in the EV class.
“Even some of the most experienced luxury-event attendees tell us that the cars which they saw last year in the paddock were unlike anything they had seen together in their lives,” Borroni says. “They get to really become familiar through test rides and drives with some of the most exciting new products in the high-speed sports car categories.

The Huracán era: car #20,000 rolls off Automobili Lamborghini’s production line
Eight-year success story through 12 road and three track versions
Automobili Lamborghini announces Huracán number 20,000: an STO model in glorious Grigio Acheso Matt for a client in the Principality of Monaco. While the Huracán Super Trofeo Omologata is the pinnacle of Huracán performance in a road car with racing spirit, it heads an extended family of Huracán models that have delivered aspirated performance with characterized dynamic handling and driving emotion since its 2014 launch.
“At its unveiling we said that with the Huracán, Lamborghini is writing the next chapter in its great history,” says Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “The Huracán has delivered an evolution of design, technological know-how, driving adventures, track records and sales records since its launch. It was designed as a car to provide super sports emotion in every environment, from daily driving to thrilling performance on track. Every iteration of the Huracán has stayed true to that Lamborghini philosophy, while in motorsport the Huracán is not only the protagonist of the Lamborghini one-make Super Trofeo series but has proved its dominance in GT3 series throughout the world.”
Eight years’ success since 2014
The Huracán's success has endured for eight years, an attraction maintained over time thanks to a wide range of versions: 12 road and three racing versions. Since 2014, 71% of customers have chosen the coupé versions and 29% the open-air derivatives. Top of the markets is the United States, where more than 32% of all Huracán versions have been delivered in the last eight years, followed by the UK and Greater China. This solid success continues also today: Huracán models largely contributed to the 2021 sales record with a strong increase sales up to 2,586 units, due partly to the impetus from the very positive customer response to the Huracán STO.
2014: the first coupé version, LP 610-4
The first Huracán coupé (LP 610-4) debuted at the 2014 Geneva motor show with four-wheel drive, 610 hp, acceleration from 0-60 mph of 3.2 secs and a top speed of 201 mph. Innovations included Lamborghini ANIMA drive mode selection, on-board gyroscope LPI system, dual fuel injection and LEDs lights throughout the car: an industry first in the super sports segment. The Huracán LP 610-4 Spyder was unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015. The 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 is the same as in the coupé and develops 610 hp. The 0-60 mph sprint is covered in 3.4 seconds and the top speed is 201 mph.
2015: Huracán LP 580-2, a two-wheel drive experience
Compared to the LP 610-4, it differs in that it has a lower-powered engine and rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive. It has the same 5.2-litre V10 as the 610-4 but with power reduced to 580 hp and torque of 393 lb/ft. Thanks to the absence of four-wheel drive, Lamborghini's engineers have achieved a weight saving of 72.75 lbs compared to the Huracán coupé, at just 3,062 lbs. Top speed is 199 mph. A Spyder RWD variant of the Huracán LP 580-2 was unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2016. The 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 is the same as the coupe and develops 580 hp. A 250-off, limited edition Avio model in 2016, celebrated the aviation and aeronautic inspiration in Huracán styling.
2016: the Huracán Performante debut and the Nürburgring lap record
The 640 hp Huracán Performante stormed into markets in 2016: with Lamborghini’s patented ALA active aerodynamic innovations, it took the Nordschleife Nürburgring lap record for production cars and won awards around the world. In 2018, the Huracán Performante Spyder took the zenith of Huracán developments: the sublime combination of peerless technological innovation, performance and open-air driving. Like the Performante coupé, the Spyder outputs 640 hp at 8,000 rpm, producing 443 ft/lbs of torque at 6,500 rpm, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 124 mph in 9.3 seconds.
2019: the new Huracán EVO - the next generation V10 super sports car
In 2019, the Huracán EVO ‘evolution’ debuted. The distinctive design defined the aerodynamic superiority and enhanced driving dynamics of this new model taking the 640 hp and extraordinary abilities of the Performante combined with rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring and LDVI with predictive logic. The EVO Spyder adopted the next-generation vehicle dynamic control and aerodynamics developed for the coupé, with the 5.2-liter naturally aspirated Lamborghini V10 engine uprated for a higher power output and incorporating Titanium intake valves. In 2020, the Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) was presented delivering 610 hp of power at 8,000 rpm and 413 ft/lbs of torque at 6,500 rpm to a lightweight car with rear-wheel drive and dynamic steering for maximum driving fun. The Huracán EVO RWD has a top speed of 202 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. In the same year, Automobili Lamborghini was the first automotive brand to use Augmented Reality (AR) for the virtual launch of a new model, the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder. Using Apple’s AR Quick Look, the company brought its latest V10 super sports car directly to customers and fans worldwide.
2021: the Huracán STO – Lamborghini Squadra Corse at its heart
The Huracán STO (Super Trofeo Omologata) launched in 2021 delivered Lamborghini’s motorsport experience and know-how in a homologated road car. It has been inspired by the Huracán EVO Super Trofeo developed by Squadra Corse for Lamborghini’s own race series, as well as the Huracán EVO GT3, three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona and two-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring. With its 640 hp naturally aspirated V10 engine generating 417 lb/ft at 6,500 rpm, the rear-wheel drive Huracán STO delivers exhilarating acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, from 0 to 124 mph in 9.0 seconds, and a top speed of 193 mph.
2022: the Huracán Tecnica, designed and engineered for the best of both worlds
The latest in the Huracán family, unveiled in April 2022, is the Huracán Tecnica: the next-generation rear-wheel drive V10, developed for pilots seeking driving fun and lifestyle perfection on both road and track. The Tecnica’s moniker embodies the advanced evolution of the Huracan’s technical prowess and, instantly distinguishable,is as much a Huracán innovation externally as it is under the hood, with its new looks accenting improved aerodynamics for heightened performance, stability and ease of use, particularly on a circuit. Taking its engine from the Huracán STO, with an increase of 30 hp over the Huracán EVO rear-wheel drive (RWD), the powertrain delivers 417 lb/ft of torque at maximum 6,500 rpm and improved acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds.
From connectivity to the digital world of E-sports
In 2021 Lamborghini became the first automaker to incorporate complete vehicle system control by Amazon Alexa in the Huracán EVO, and also first to adopt the what:three:words function for accurate navigation anywhere in the world. Lamborghini fans enjoy the Huracán in a host of video games and E-sports competitions including FORZA Horizon and Gran Turismo, Rocket League and Assetto Corsa Competizione.
60% of Huracáns feature Ad Personam customization
More than 60% of Huracáns delivered have featured Ad Personam customization drawing on a vast palette of colors, trims and special materials. The Ad Personam program now offers around 300 exterior colors, but a customer can always request a unique option. Customers in central Europe, Japan and UK are the most inclined to tailor-made customization. Everyday objects such as furniture, sofas, bags,
clothes, but also make-up (eye shadows, nail varnish), precious stones and watchstraps inspire Lamborghini customers. They need to feel free to create something that represents them: their tastes, personality and everyday life. A Huracán rear-wheel drive for the Pope was created in papal colors and presented in the Vatican City to be auctioned for charity.
Huracán Polizia: a long-standing relationship with the Italian Police
Several Huracáns have been delivered to the Italian police in a long-standing relationship: mainly used in medical emergencies, last year a Huracán delivered a transplant organ across 304 miles from Padua to Rome in just over two hours.
Visitors touching down at Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi airport have enjoyed the sight of Huracán follow-me cars leading planes onto aprons.

From the road to the racetrack with Huracán Super Trofeo
The Huracán and its EVO successor have also created history on the racetrack. Almost 500 Huracán race cars have come off the production line in Super Trofeo and GT3 guise, including a limited Squadra Corse edition celebrating 10 years of Super Trofeo in 2019. Huracán GT3s have taken over than 40 championship titles and 117 victories in more than 12 series worldwide: Lamborghini is the only automaker to win the 24 Hours of Daytona GTD class three consecutive times, with the GT3 and GT3 EVO also winning the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring double, two years in a row between 2018 and 2019.

National WWI Museum and Memorial: War Wheels

The National WWI Museum and Memorial honors those who died in a war no one today can recall from participation, and most Americans know little about the carnage, other than a smattering from high school history.
For its generation, it was “The Great War” and the “War to End All Wars.” The numbers, for sure, were great: The conflict, July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, tallied nine million combat and five million civilian deaths, from bullets and bombs, tanks and poison gas, flu and genocide. And, rather than end wars, its conclusion sparked a far worse conflagration 20 years later, with more than 60 million dead including the horrors of the Holocaust.
This year, to mark Memorial Day, May 30, Highline Autos visits the museum in downtown Kansas City, Mo., where you can experience the most comprehensive “Great War” collection in the world –– more than 500,000 items.
In 1920, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, then known as the Liberty Memorial, began collecting objects and documents from all nations involved in the First World War. Formed in 1918, The Liberty Memorial Association was the collecting institution and built both the Memorial and the Museum. through the eyes of all nations that were participants,” says Doran Cart, senior curator. “The collection holds three vehicles used for transport as well as a U.S. battery wagon, a rolling kitchen with a wood wagon, a water wagon and a cook wagon. Also included is a motorcycle, a French Peugeot folding bicycle and three reproduction airplanes.”
The Museum and Memorial opened in 1926, with 150,000 spectators turning out to listen to President Calvin Coolidge deliver the keynote remarks. The Memorial was named a National Landmark in 2004, and the current National WWI Museum and Memorial, built beneath the Liberty Memorial Tower, opened in December 2o06.
Wars Move on Wheels
The earliest vehicle in the museum is a Model 1909 ambulance, among the last mule-drawn ambulances designed for the United States Army before motorized vehicles superseded them. Cart discusses this and other vehicles:
•French Renault FT17 Tank –– The tank’s original purpose was to serve as a mobile command center for battalions and provide machine gun cover. This was the first tank to be designed by Louis Renault, and 2,500 were ordered. It was also the first tank with a revolving turret and was armed with a machine gun or a 37-mm cannon. One of the few reproductions in the Museum, this Glenn Huff reproduction aircraft is a Nieuport 12 produced beginning in 1915. It served as a multi-purpose plane doing reconnaissance, bombing and fighting.

in large quantities in 1918. This actual tank was deployed in France and disabled by a German 7.7-cm artillery piece in the fall of 1918 just before the Armistice. The tank still has its original camouflage paint.
•1918 Ford Model T Truck –– When America entered the war, the federal government placed an order for 12,000 Ford Model T Trucks for the American Expeditionary Forces. More than 5,000 arrived in November 1918. The car served many roles including carrying equipment, troops and serving as ambulances. When they came off the line, they were painted black because Henry Ford opposed American involvement in the war. Any camouflage or other paint had to be added by the Army.
•1917 Harley Davidson Motorcycle –– They were first used by the Army during General Pershing’s expedition fighting Pancho Villa in 1916, during which motorcycles were equipped with a machine gun on a side car. In WWI, 20,000plus motorcycles were used by the expeditionary forces in France. They were primarily used for reconnaissance, communications and sending wounded from the front to the hospitals.
•Motorized and Animal-Drawn Ambulances –– Two ambulances are displayed in the Main Gallery of the Museum and Memorial: a 1918 Ford Model T ambulance and the Model 1909 mule drawn-ambulance. A mule-drawn ambulance was at times advantageous to motorized vehicles because it could travel where the motorized ambulances could not. In general, an ambulance could carry four stretchers of wounded.
•German Zeppelin L49 Fabric Fragment –– A recent addition to the Museum and Memorial’s collection is a small fragment of fabric from the skin of a Zeppelin L49, one of only two items from a Zeppelin in the Museum’s collection.

Chronology of World War I
On the morning of Oct. 19, 1917, 13 Zeppelins, including L49, were ordered to “attack middle England. Industrial region of Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, etc.” With a crew of 19 and carrying 11,000 pounds of fuel, it set out with a payload of 4,410 pounds of bombs; 42 bombs were dropped. Following the raid, L49 was forced down in France near Bourbonne-les-Bains by French fighter planes.
All crew members survived and were taken prisoner. This fabric is not currently on exhibit in the Museum and Memorial but can be found online at theworldwar.org.
