THE CARRERA GT: Second-To-None Performance Credentials written by David Neyens

Throughout its rich history dating back to 1948, the Porsche marque has graced the motoring world with a succession of racing homologation specials engineered and built to meet international competition requirements while remaining perfectly legal for road use. The limited-production Carrera GT of 2004-06 is an electrifying case in point, rooted in a development program that commenced in 1999 and yielded a prototype shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2000. Conjuring stunning images of the shark-like 904 Carrera of the mid1960s, the new Carrera GT was initially intended as the planned successor to the mighty and successful Le Manswinning 911 GT1 race car of the late 1990s.

While FIA rule changes frustrated its endurance-racing plans for the new car, Porsche forged ahead with the Carrera GT road

car, repurposed as a range-topping, elite supercar representing the culmination of all the lessons Porsche learned on the track. The initial show car generated a firestorm of interest among Porsche’s top clients, and was first shown in production-ready form at the March 2003 Geneva International Motor Show. The Carrera GT pushed the technical limits of the era’s supercars to new heights, and demand for the car exceeded even the wildest expectations of Porsche’s traditionally conservative product planners and sales organization.

Beginning with an only slightly civilized derivation of Porsche’s V10 race engine intended for FIA events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the “street” Carrera GT power plant paid nominal observance to worldwide emissions and noise regulations. Factory-rated at 603 horsepower, the mid-mounted 5.7-liter

Carrera GT V10 engine was, and firmly remains, a ferocious performer. Technical specifications of the Carrera GT remain stunning today, beginning with a competition-style, carbonfiber monocoque tub and subframe structures produced by Italy’s ATR Composites Group. Race-worthy underpinnings included inboard rocker arms with upper and lower wishbones at all four corners. Both the Carrera GT’s clutch and brake components employ strong yet lightweight ceramic composite materials. Even its massive 19- and 20-inch staggered wheels are made from ultra-lightweight forged magnesium for minimal unsprung weight and a razor-sharp response to driver inputs.

The design of the Carrera GT body was completed by a team of stylists under the famed Dutch automobile designer Harm Lagaay. Similar to other contemporary Porsche models, the Carrera GT employs an automated rear wing that deploys at speeds above 120 km/h (75 mph) or by the driver’s election at any speed, providing additional downforce and stability. In fact, not one body feature of the incredibly aggressive Carrera GT is not functional — everything serves a role in elevating the driving experience. Huge air intakes on both sides blast cool, dense air to the Carrera GT’s three radiators, providing five times the engine-cooling area of that on Porsche’s contemporary 911 Turbo. The carbon-fiber underbody of the

Carrera GT is a study in cutting-edge aerodynamic efficiency, working in concert with the rear diffuser to maintain the car’s remarkable stability even at shockingly high speeds. While designed and developed for extreme all-around performance, the Carrera GT’s interior is an example of purposeful luxury and safety features, including front and side-impact airbags, plus safe stopping afforded by ABS brakes.

Performance credentials for the Carrera GT are nothing short of superlative by any era’s standards. According to Porsche AG, acceleration from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved in just 3.9 seconds, with the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark obliterated in 9.9 seconds and the car hitting a top speed of a supercar-worthy 330 km/h (205 mph). While never intended for the drag strip, the Carrera GT can also deliver a wicked 11.4-second elapsed time over the quarter-mile — normally the preserve of bare-bones drag cars. Mated to the racebred V10 engine is a 6-speed manual gearbox and transaxle, controlled with a simple yet elegant beechwood gearshift knob that pays homage to the wild V12 Le Mans-conquering Porsche 917s of 1969-71.

While Porsche was frustrated in its quest to take the Carrera GT to racing, the car was nonetheless an unqualified success as a thinly disguised racing car for the road, satisfying

Porsche’s most ardent and well-heeled clients. Demanding equal measures of respect and skill to master, the Carrera GT still stands as one of the most thrilling high-performance sports cars ever produced — bar none. Proof of this came in July 2004, when factory test driver and famed racing driver Walter Röhrl tore through the Nürburgring’s notoriously challenging Nordschleife circuit in just 7 minutes, 28 seconds — a world record that stood for more than the next five years. According to Porsche AG, approximately 1,270 examples of the highly anticipated Carrera GT were ultimately built at Porsche’s newly built production facility in Leipzig, Germany. Of these, just 644 were destined for America’s hungry, elite supercar market of the mid-2000s.

“My name is Adrian Suciu, and I am the owner of Steering Wheel Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was born in Timisoara, Romania; after finishing high school, I joined the army. In 2001, I decided with my wife, Luminita, to move to Spain and get married.

“I had to accept any job opportunity to be able to maintain my family. I used to work as a postman, a construction worker and I even opened a second-hand store. Then, my wife and I decided for me to go to Romania to get my truck driver’s license so I could have a more stable job. But I kept searching for more things to do because that wasn’t my dream.

“I went to Timișoara, and my brother gave me a steering wheel to wrap in leather. I didn’t know that it was possible to do that, so I told him that I would buy a case from the store. He told me that he didn’t want that and that he wanted it custom made. I went to a guy that wrapped steering wheels in leather named Silviu. I was just observing how he was

doing his job and I was fascinated by his work. I was just like a little kid in Legoland. I felt like I was being told that I had to do this amazing job.

“My wife told me to focus on getting my truck driver's license, but I told her that I would also like to try to have this job which I thought was really amazing and interesting. I got to buy a sewing machine from Romania and I brought it to Spain. When I was trying to put the thread in the machine, I accidentally broke the needle. I didn’t get to accomplish much in Spain.

“In 2015 or 2016, I was thinking of moving to the U.S. with my family. I worked as a truck driver in Spain for about six months, and then we packed our bags and moved to the U.S. I started as a construction worker, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to wrap steering wheels in leather. I was telling my partners from work that I was thinking about wrapping steering wheels, and they told me to go for it. I began searching through the internet to get some thread, leather and more.

“My very first steering wheel that I attempted to wrap took days to finish, I would get out of my garage exhausted. I wanted to see how someone would react to my new work because for me it was something very satisfying to see what amazing things I could make with my own hands.

“During the week, I would go to shops and garages that had custom cars so I could show them my work. When I saw the shop that I am currently at, I really liked it because I saw that it was very organized and clean. So I told my wife that I wanted to rent a shop for myself to work at with steering wheels; I could only rent a room at that shop, but that was just enough space for me. I asked the owner of the place if I could rent a room there, and he said that I could. I was very happy when I was told that I could rent that room.

“In September, I organized all of my things in my new place and I made myself a table to work on with leather and other stuff. This was where my new adventure began because I was around only exotic cars and that was how my perspective changed and went to the next level. People started talking about me and recommending me.

“I started going to every car event that I possibly could and sometimes I would even go to three events on Saturdays. One of the events takes place in Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson; I would go around there with my business cards and a steering wheel, and people would ask me why I was carrying a steering wheel with me. This year was amazing for me because finally I was able to put up a stand at Barrett-Jackson. I had some customers that would come over to my stand and congratulate me because I got to put my stand at the biggest car auction in the world. It was tiring but I enjoyed it because I was doing it with passion.

“When a customer tells me a genuine ‘thank you’ for the product it means a lot to me, more than receiving the money. I finally have a job that I actually love and I believe it’s the best job that I could ever have. I get to live in a dream that I wasn’t even dreaming about before.”

For two decades, the Silverleaf community in north Scottsdale has represented exalted Southwest living. This super-luxury hillside estate home, 10719 E. Rimrock Drive, elevates Silverleaf still higher.

The gated community’s first LEED-certified home, the two-story, 13,111-square-foot Formal Mediterranean-style home in the Horseshoe Canyon neighborhood combines environmental excellence, including energy-saving geothermal, luxury spaces and materials, precision craftsmanship and remarkable views toward the mountains and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Scottsdale-based Desert Star Construction, guided by its founder and CEO, Jerry Meek, sensitively carved the 9.142acre homesite from the hillside. The two-level home includes

six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two powder rooms. A stand-alone 1,789-square-foot two-bedroom guest home is included.

“The way this fantastic property is laid out, its design and its convenience is a result of the owner’s desire to have it all. The air-conditioned garage will comfortably accommodate four cars, and room adjacent is available for more bays, says the home’s architect, Erik Peterson, AIA, president of PHX Architecture, which specializes in homes, clubhouses and hospitality projects. The design/construction team completed the home in 2012.

Aazami adds: “One of its many fine aspects is the flex second level, which gives you additional bedrooms and a different perspective on the property and its spectacular setting over the magnificent Silverleaf clubhouse, the golf course, the mountains and the nature preserve, with its many miles of hiking and biking trails and extraordinary high desert views.”

Green from the Ground Up

The hillside site called for extensive excavation and had a wash running diagonally through it, requiring the team to think innovatively in both the design and construction phases,

Peterson explains. “We had to fit all the programs for this home and balance the allowable zoning coverage area. Components such as the geothermal were part of the complexity of the systems that make up this home. And, its mere size and scale, as well as establishing privacy and creating a resortlifestyle setting, made this home uniquely challenging to design and build.”

Because of these and other factors, the home has generated local and national press coverage. The Wall Street Journal, for example, filmed and photographed the project.

To prepare the site, Desert Star removed more than 3,000 cubic yards of bedrock to conveniently locate the main living area of this home on the ground floor, with the children’s bedrooms and an elaborate game room and view balcony on the second level. Accessed by a spiral staircase, the second level has two ensuite bedrooms with view patios, a fireplace, a bar and a large sitting area.

“The home had to embrace the hillside where it was located, wrapping gently around its slope while preserving as much of the natural desert vegetation as possible,” Meek explains. “Every stone salvaged from the mountainside was carefully preserved and re-embedded into the retaining walls lining the property.”

The auto court retaining walls received equal care. “We constructed them using spread footing, excavating with a

hydraulic 6,000-pound hammer attached to a Caterpillar excavator,” Meek explains, noting that this foundation spreads the load for greater building stability.

The Desert Star crew formed the retaining walls with aluminum panels incorporating cast-in-place concrete. “When we completed the concrete work, we installed waterproofing and applied Native DC Ranch Stone,” he adds. “We then backfilled, compacted and restored the natural desert.”

For the geothermal, the team bored twelve 350-foot-deep ground loop wells to cultivate earth-generated and stored energy for year-round home conditioning. Inside, a Savant Whole House Technology System allows for controlling and monitoring your safety, comfort and entertainment features throughout the home.

The main house is LEED Certified, the guest house LEED Silver. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a green building certification program developed by the nonprofit Chicago-based U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

In 2010, Desert Star also claimed the first LEED AP for homes and the first LEED-certified custom home in Paradise Valley that achieved Platinum, Gold and Certified because of three buildings on the property. In addition, about 12 years ago, the builder completed the first LEED Gold full-service restaurant after the firm joined with architect Candelaria Design Associates and other team members to renovate the historic El Chorro restaurant in Paradise Valley.

Quality & Craftsmanship

“Quality needs to be built into each project; it can’t be inspected in later,” says Meek.

All walls, for instance, are insulated for acoustics and are finished with Porcelina™ plaster. And, throughout the flooring is hand-scraped rustic walnut and smoothly waxed terracotta; interior doors are solid rustic knotty walnut finished with suede glaze and antique distressing. The home has 13 gas fireplaces, carbon filtration, a water softener, and 14 air handlers connect with geothermal-fed cooling towers.

Individual spaces reiterate this commitment. The kitchen cabinetry is hand-hewn select alder with El Tovar finish, and the large island features crema gold marble. The refrigerator is Sub-Zero Refrigerator, the range Wolf, the microwave and coffee station Miele and the trash compactor Kitchenaid.

“The area offers easy access to the butler’s/baker’s/catering pantry with custom select alder cabinetry, ample storage and gold-veined Calcatta counter space for preparation,” Meek says. The adjacent breakfast room has select alder cabinetry and large picture windows with wide views of the mountains and the golf course, and the beverage station bar features custom cabinetry, a refrigerator, sink and copper countertop.

The master suite incorporates a groin vault ceiling with spaces for pampering and dressing. A spacious dressing area includes custom carved cabinetry, an expansive walk-in closet, a beautifully appointed “her” vanity with Calcatta Borghini marble, walk-in shower, soaking tub and inspiring golf course and mountain views. His side has a massage room, custom handcarved closet and dressing area, full-featured vanity, an over-

sized shower with custom ceiling detail and a steam shower.

The living/great room has reclaimed wide plank oak flooring, hand-hewn soda-blasted ceiling beams, built-in custom carved cabinetry and a limestone fireplace. French doors open to a spacious patio with golf course and Valley views. The family room includes a full-size bar with a stainless countertop and space for lounging, watching movies or playing cards. The dining room is warmed by a limestone fireplace.

Also on the first level are his and her offices flanking a small interior courtyard with a fountain. His office has knotty alder cabinetry with hand-tooled distressing and soft-hewn edges and a hand-waxed custom finish. The temperature-controlled wine room has a capacity for 500-plus bottles, and the exercise room has mountain and golf course views and a private loggia for post-workout relaxation.

Outside are several lounge areas to enjoy the views; kitchen/BBQ terrace; a pool and spa; pool bath; and a lowmaintenance lawn.

Premium kitchen, bathroom and entertaining components were sourced from companies such as Bosch, Perlick, Clyde, Mountain Grid, Zurn, Toto, Jaclo, Rocky Mountain, Bates, Brasstech, Atlantis, Rohl, Phylrich, Hansgrohe, Marzi, Devon, Kohler, Steamist and Cheviot. Diablo Roadster for Concorso Italiano

Scott Reiner has been detailing cars for 38 years. “It’s my passion,” he says. “The world of detailing has been nonstop for me since I was young. I have had no other job.”

The owner of Worldwide Detailing Products & Services in Tucson will detail any car, boat or RV, but he specializes in making high-end luxury and performance vehicles look showroom new for collections, shows, auctions and private sales.

In particular, he has meticulously serviced a 1997 Lamborghini Diablo Roadster for more than a decade. The red-on-black mid-engine supercar is documented as the first Diablo imported into the United States. Only 466 or 468 Diablo Roadsters were produced from 1996 to 1999; they were the

first 200-mph Lambos. The 530-horsepower, 5-speed Italian exotic has logged just 25,000 miles; garage kept, it has been fully serviced since July 1997 when it arrived in California.

Reiner provides a variety of services, including a Full-Service Wash; Mobile Autowash and Detailing; Interior Detailing, with steam-cleaning for cloth or leather; Exterior Detailing, including polishing and waxing; Engine Steam Clean; and Ceramic and Graphene Coatings. In addition, the company offers Concorso Italiano Preparation and Private Collection Options for shows and sales.

Reiner traces his car/motorcycle passion to his drag racing youth. His first job in the industry was at a Tucson Toyota

dealership, where he learned the business from a veteran car detailer. Then he hung out his detailing shingle.

Through a client, Reiner became involved with the Arizona Lamborghini Club; he’s been a member since 1994. After he had finished detailing a Lambo, members began requesting his services, and he was on the fast track.

In 1996, the Diablo owner, a fellow Club member, visited the Lamborghini factory in Sant’ Agata, Bologna, where he met the great factory-team driver, Valentino Balboni, who took him for a high-gs heart-throbbing test drive. When his head cleared, he bought the 1997.

Numerous show awards have been given as a result of its classic Gandini design, one-off status as the first roadster in the United States –– and Reiner’s distinguised premium care. In 2007, 2008, and 2010, the Diablo placed 1st in Class at the Concorso Italiano, held annually during Monterey Car Week.

In preparation for the 2019 event, Prestige Autohaus, which handles the Diablo’s technical aspects, confirmed that no modifications have been made since its purchase. “It is exactly

as received from the factory 25 years ago,” the owner says.

About the same time, Reiner completed a fastidious detail on the car in California. “We spent about 100 hours on the Diablo over two months, including 20 hours of polishing and 12–15 hours applying graphene ceramic,” he says.

At the event, The Diablo again secured 1st in Class place as well as being elected the People’s Choice. And this year at Concorso Italiano, the car won 1st in Class and the muchsought-after Valentino Award, honoring the driver who inspired the purchase 25 years ago.

“I’ll go anywhere in the U.S. and worldwide,” Reiner says, noting that he hopes to be invited to go to Scottsdale in January to show a vehicle at the reborn Arizona Concours.

“When I hear people asking about ‘that great car detailer in Arizona,’” he says, “I want them to know I am that car detailer. Call us.”

‘The highest privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country.’

Next time you’re on I-10 east or west near Indio, California, watch for those light-brown road signs noting a point of tourist interest ahead. One is for the General Patton Memorial Museum; if you have the time, stop off at exit 173, Chiriaco Summit, once part of the Desert Training Center in World War II. Eight decades ago what happened here helped in the battle to save freedom and democracy.

About 28 miles east of Coachella and Indio, you can fill up on gasoline, snacks, pop and history at the exit area, anchored by the 501-C-3 nonprofit museum, which celebrates the achievements of the great general and his men. Here you can see more than 50 vehicles as well as artifacts, weapons, letters and other material from World War II, the Korean War, Viet Nam and later.

Every November 11, we remember the sacrifices our veterans have made throughout U.S. history. The most recent numbers document a population of 19,162,515, about 10.7% female,

according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Living World War II veterans total 240,329; 234 are dying each day. The Patton Museum celebrates all of them year round.

Dec. 7, 1941, seismically shook the country. Americans were tired of foreign wars and just beginning to thrive again after the Great Depression, but it was clear that all departments of the military had to reinvigorate quickly, and Americans with that. To meet the land challenge — in particular, that posed by the formidable German General Rommel and his panzer divisions — General George S. Patton (1885–1945) was charged with establishing the Desert Training Center in late 1941, just weeks after the Day of Infamy at Pearl Harbor.

Since World War I, when tanks first saw combat, Patton had advocated for armored strength teamed with knockout offensive action. At the DTC, his mission was to train a million men to do this in heat similar to that in the Sahara of North Africa, where the first American war action would occur. The chosen area was 18,000 square miles of Mojave and Colorado Desert in California and Arizona, which was Sahara-scorching in the summer months. Areas of Nevada were also included because of the similar climate.

The site, Chiriaco Summit, in the Coachella Valley, Riverside County, is also known as the California/Arizona Maneuver Area (CAMA). About 50 miles southeast of Palm Springs, it’s close to today’s Joshua Tree National Park. A world-famous concert is held in Coachella every year; few concert-goers and musicians are aware that their enjoyment is possible because of what was performed here eight decades before.

General Patton, Meet Joe & Ruth Chiriaco

In 1942, “Blood and Guts” Patton, as he was already called by his men, visited Joe and Ruth Chiriaco; he was an entrepreneur from Alabama and she a Minnesota native who came West to become a nurse. After purchasing the land where today’s museum is, the couple opened a general store and service station in 1933, next to the new US Route 60, now I-10. Soon the facility was attracting soldiers, local clientele and others traveling on the new highway. Early visitors were also the first rangers at Joshua Tree National Monument, now a National Park.

General Patton needed Joe to help understand the desert terrain; he had been a surveyor on the transformative Colorado River Aqueduct in the mid-1930s. His daughter, Margit F. Chiriaco Rusche, who owns the property, says that Patton told her father: “You run the store, and I’ll run the war.”

The Army purchased 40-plus acres from the Chiriacos, while he established his headquarters, Camp Young, about a quarter mile from the store. Training continued at DTC until 1944, when the Allies declared victory in North Africa.

An airport used by Patton was built to the east of today’s museum. Today Chiriaco Summit Airport, owned by Riverside County, hosts private planes which stop at the café for lunch and serves search and rescue teams. “We’re well known for the General Patton Burger,” Margit says.

The collection and eventual museum started slowly. “My dad had saved a few items from the time when there were so

many soldiers surrounding Chiriaco Summit from Camp Young and other camps,” she says.

“Dad saved three of the iron pipe frames used over jeeps in the beginning when they could not get the real tanks here fast enough for them to begin their maneuvers,” she adds. “After the camps were closed, others collected items, and many kept them at home until later when we received them as donations.”

In 1945, the Chiriacos established a memorial to Patton after he died on an Army base in Germany when a truck and the 1939 Cadillac accident he was a passenger in collided.

In 1985, the BLM placed a monument on the site of today’s museum. “There was immediate interest in providing a hub for the items and their interpretation,” Margit explains. The effort to build the museum began when she and Leslie Cone, representing BLM, formed a committee and established a 501-C-3. Her parents gifted the land for the museum in 1987. They died nine years later.

As a result of the efforts of the Bureau of Land Management and the private sector, the museum opened to a crowd of more than 5,000 on Veterans Day, November 11, 1988.

Among the 54 vehicles in the collection today are a variety of tanks, including a Pershing, a Sherman (“Rosie”), two M Stuarts and a number of M60s. Also in the collection are a dump truck,

jeeps, a trailer, an amphibious truck (a “duck”), an ambulance and a fire truck. The museum acquired many of the M60s by donation from Defense Reutilization Management Office and other government surplus agencies.

And, the museum includes weaponry and medals and other articles of interest that were part of DTC life, North African conflicts, European conflicts and the Pacific. Regular exhibits are held inside and out. An electric cars charging station, an antique store, book store and travel information center are also on the museum site.

Several acres showcase military vehicles in the Ed Hastey Park, all with interpretive signage. Also outside you can find several walls memorializing veterans and first responders. Visible from the interstate is a bronze statue of Patton by Viet Nam War vet Austin Deuel, erected in 1993. A member of the Scottsdale American Legion/VFW, he died in 2021.

The Metropolitan Water District donated a large map for the opening; it shows the 11 training camps used by the DTC. “Without the availability of water for the remote camps, we could not have gone into North Africa and then Europe and helped win the war in Europe, bringing peace to the world,” she says.

A large expansion of the museum occurred in 2017. Recently added is the 6,000-square-foot West Wing, made possible by N. Chandi and Suzanna Chandi; the Coeta and Donald E Barker Foundation is filling it with the interpretative educational exhibits.

Next to this is the Matzner Pavillion, another 6,000 square

feet of tanks and large military vehicles for display and interpretation. Also new is the Camp Young USO Theater which shows several informative videos about the camps and the museum and the efforts of stars such as Al Jolson and Bob Hope to entertain the troops throughout the world.

“The most important significance of the museum is for the public to know what happened during the war and that training took place at Camp Young at Chiriaco Summit. The museum is laid out that anyone can do a ‘self tour’ and has a wealth of information displayed,” says Pete Minix, an Indio resident who has served on the board of directors and continues to donate work to the museum.

“Patton’s impact on Chiriaco Summit was tremendous. Overnight the little café went from about 20–25 people a day to 300. Joe and Ruth worked very hard to bring their little operation up to speed fast,” explains Mary Gordon, a writer who lives in Tucson. One of her books, Chiriaco Summit Built by Love to Last in the Desert, details the history of the area.

“When Margit needed someone to help write their family business story, she asked if I’d be interested. I found the Summit and the family so interesting and inspiring. I woke up every day happy to be working on such a worthwhile project,” she recalls. “I could talk on and on about the Summit.”

Tanks, Trucks & Jeeps

The oldest vehicle in the collection is the 1941 WC3 Dodge light-range utility truck, and the newest is a 1980 16-936 wrecker which was used in Operation Desert Storm.

Here are some details on a half dozen of the other vehicles:

•Jeep, ¼ ton, 4x4, 1950–52 — Built by Willys-Overland, it has a 4-cylinder 54-horse engine and was the replacement for the WWII jeep, one of the vehicles, it’s said, that won the war. Changes include a 24-volt electrical, tailgate, gas filler outside the body and a different rear end. Total production was 62,329. This one was donated by John and Kathy Hendrix in memory of Joe E. Mann.

•2 ½-ton Truck, 6x6, Amphibian — Built in 1944, the DUKW “Duck” was manufactured by the General Motors Corporation with a 6-cylinder, 104-horsepower 270-ci engine. The truck was used during World War II and the Korean War by U.S. Armed Forces. The Leroy Allen Family donated it.

•M26 Pershing Tank — The heavy tank, built in 1945 by Ford, has a V-8 GAF automatic and can reach 20 mph. It carries a 90mm gun. Donated by NTC, Fort Irvin, it was refurbished by Battlefield Vegas.

•1939 Cadillac — This is similar to the one that Patton was riding in when it collided with a truck that killed him on an Army base in 1945.

•2-1/2-ton Cargo Truck— Built in 1943, it was used for communication and carrying telephone poles to installation points.

•Fire Truck — Manufactured by Dodge and the Waterous Company, this vehicle has a 6-cylinder Dodge 230-ci flathead producing 92 horsepower. It was used stateside by the U.S. Armed Forces. The Desert Centers Lions Club donated it to the museum.

On Veterans Day, The Patton Museum is celebrating Veterans

Day with a memorial event, free to all visitors. The ceremony will honor Austin Deuel, the sculptor of the Patton statue at the entrance to the museum, and will welcome home the Sherman tank that has been refurbished by Battlefield Vegas; the company will be given the Founders Award. And, the museum will open the Colorado river Bailey bridge crossing the dry lagoon, gifted to the museum by the Bard Water District.

General Patton’s granddaughter, Helen Patton, says: “I consider my every visit to the General Patton Memorial Museum a privilege, not only because it touches me personally as a direct descendent but also as someone who through my constant study of the war has learned to appreciate the amount of preparation our soldiers’ efforts in Europe required. It’s riveting to stand at the place where young men, who would later give their all, were formed.” Her father, Patton’s son, was Brigadier General George Smith Patton IV (1923-2004).

She adds: “Here is a heritage all Americans can share, where freedom’s backbone begins for all nations and all people. Its representative is the unforgettable Patton! But only because soldiers in his wake took tactic and tenacity forward toward certain victory, which continues to inspire new generations of soldiers. May we never forsake nor belittle what this territory gave birth to. I will be eternally grateful to the founders of this museum and those who keep the history available and the ground sacred.”

a Reimagined Homage to The Record-Shattering CC8S

Twenty years ago the introduction of the Koenigsegg’s first production car, the CC8S, defined the new “megacar” category. In celebration of the CC8S’s 20th anniversary, the Koenigsegg CC850 was unveiled at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering to an audience of media, customers, and industry luminaries.

The CC850 is a contemporary reimagination of the Koenigsegg CC8S. It is also a dual tribute for Koenigsegg, celebrating 20 years of vehicle production, as well as the 50th birthday of the company’s founder and namesake, Christian Von Koenigsegg. As such, CC850 production will be limited to just 50 cars worldwide.

“The CC850 is an homage to the single most meaningful car in Koenigsegg history,” said Christian von Koenigsegg.

“The CC8S put us on the map and made us successful – and celebrating 20 years of production, alongside my 50th birthday, felt like the right time to reveal the CC850 to appreciate our roots.”

The Ultimate Driver’s Megacar

The CC850’s mission is to deliver the purest, most funda mentally joyful driving experience of any Koenigsegg so far.

While visually the CC8S inspiration is apparent, the drivetrain, engine, and capabilities of the CC850 are anything but vintage.

The CC850’s 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 was engineered and constructed entirely in-house. As seen in the Jesko, this V8 does not feature a flywheel and is therefore the most responsive, fastrevving engine possible. The visceral experience and accom panying aural signature are otherworldly and incomparable.

Performance is staggering—the CC850’s 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivers 1,185 hp on gasoline or 1,385 hp on E85, as well as 1,385 nm (1,020 lb-ft) of torque.

As with the iconic Koenigsegg ONE:1 released in 2014, the CC850 also achieves a 1:1 power to weight ratio with 1385 hp and a 1385 kg curb weight.

Revolutionary World-First Transmission

What makes the Koenigsegg CC850 truly unique and driverfocused is its revolutionary, worldfirst Engage Shift System (ESS). The ESS allows for different gear ratios depending on the driving mode, providing tailored experiences based on road or track use. But that’s not what truly sets ESS apart.

Based on Koenigsegg’s Light Speed Transmission (LST), ESS, paired with a clutch pedal, is an adaptable, multi-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission that also can run as a super-fast, smoothshifting 9-speed automatic. The ability for the driver to seam lessly choose between an unadulterated manual transmission or more laid-back automatic shifting is unprecedented. It places the CC850 in a class by itself.

The gated ESS shifter is a work of mechanical art and is reminiscent of Swiss chronographs— intricate, aesthetically beautiful, and completely functional. Great care has been taken to make the ESS one of the most engaging manuals ever created. Additionally, the Swedish flag crowns the manual shifter as it did in the original manual CC8S.

CC850 Design: Familiar, Yet All-New

The exterior showcases sleek Nordic Koenigsegg design, telephone-dial style rims and triple taillights, all of which draw inspiration from the earliest Koenigsegg models.

The interior boasts a symmetrical, minimal design aesthetic

akin to the CC8S. This symmetry makes adaptations for leftand right-hand drive versions practical. The round steering wheel, the open-gate shifter with exposed mechanical com ponents, and the analogue chrono cluster showcase the precision work that underpins the CC850.

And of course, as a Koenigsegg, the CC850 features the iconic detachable hardtop, the synchrohelix door system, the Autoskin function – and, naturally, it can run on renewable fuels.

Bugatti Carbone Limited Edition: the first carbon fiber smartwatch

Bugatti has revealed the latest in its range of innovative digital timepieces, created with VIITA Watches. The Carbone Limited Edition by VIITA is not only the world’s first limited-run smartwatch, but also the first to be constructed with a full carbon fiber housing. As with its range of hyper sports cars, only the very best materials, design and craftsmanship have been chosen.

In the modern era of Bugatti, carbon fiber is a crucial material. Extremely lightweight, strong and dense, it is used both in the monocoque and in the body of every Bugatti. Without its innate strength, the recordbreaking performance of models like the Chiron Super Sport 300+ would simply not be possible. The revolutionary material is applied here to the Carbone Limited Edition smartwatch, immediately creating a link with Bugatti’s range of hyper sports cars. Finished with highlights of blue, a French racing color forever associated with the brand, the carbon fiber elements are milled precisely from a solid block.

Compared to the first model, the Bugatti Ceramique Edition One smartwatch, the battery capacity has been increased by 22% to 540 mAh, meanwhile the overall weight has reduced by 13% despite the larger battery, thanks to its new lightweight materials. In normal use, without the GPS services, the battery lasts up to 15 days. In always-on mode, a battery life of two to three days can be expected.

In both materials and design, the Carbone Limited Edition mimics the Bugatti line-up, and also in its innovative use of technologies. Much like the Bugatti Ceramique Edition One smartwatch range, it features a GPS sensor especially developed for this range of watches, housed among 1,000 intricately packaged components, which provides an entirely new level of accuracy. Wearers taking it to the racetrack can have their lap times and acceleration data recorded automatically by the watch.

A dual-sensor measures both heart rate and heart rate variability to report detailed health data to the wearer, which can be logged on more than 90 different sports. Cardiovascular recovery, training recommendations, biological age and stress level measurements are each generated and supported. More basic functions like step counting and sleep monitoring are also included.

The Bugatti Carbone Limited Edition is waterproof to 100 m or 10 ATM, and comes with a 390*390px AMOLED Sapphire glass touch screen with 16.7 million colors. Owners of the watch have the choice of wearing it with a gray silicone/nylon strap or a black silicone strap – both included in the box.

As a testament to the quality of every Bugatti smartwatch, a five-year warranty is provided – a new standard for smartwatches offered only by Bugatti. Only 2,500 pieces will ever be created, with the first 500 delivered in December. Each watch costs $2,555.00.
