Built to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary, the F40 was a Berlinetta designed by Pininfarina. It featured sophisticated high performance with turbo-charged running gear combined with a first-class chassis, giving it the tremendous dynamic prowess that made it feel like a racing car.

The F40 nameplate was derived from F for Ferrari and 40, which represented the 40th anniversary of the marque’s car production. The F40 was also the last new car reveal attended by Enzo Ferrari before his death in August 1988.

The F40 had a radical machine philosophy cultivated by its predecessor, the GTO, and it was greeted with enthusiasm.

When the F40 was announced to the public in the middle of 1987, the Pininfarina-designed body surprised everyone. Its raw appearance resembled that of a racing model, but it was street-legal and could be driven around town.

The F40 retained only trace elements of its predecessor's styling that could be seen primarily around the cabin profile. Otherwise, the F40’s body styling was all new, along with many of its construction materials. The low and mean wide front end flowed with an array of cooling slots and intake ducts that could also be found behind the high-mounted wing, that spanned the width of the rear end. The F40’s wing became known as one of the ultimate ’80s power statements.

Despite Ferrari refusing to say how many of its mighty supercars would be built, the public flocked to it. Production continued through 1992, and 1,311 examples were produced in the chassis number range 76624-95317. For some context, that is nearly five times as many vehicles produced as its predecessor, the GTO. Racing versions were developed with suffixes LM and GT-E, which enjoyed success during the 1990s in European GT racing.

Lot #1405.1, a 1989 Ferrari F40 offered with No Reserve at the 2023 Scottsdale Auction, was produced at the height of

the supercar boom in 1989. It was an early-production F40 delivered new to the official Ferrari dealer in Holland, Kroymans Automotive B.V. It has a racing history with David Hart and Michel Oprey in the Ferrari/Porsche Challenge series.

This example is finished in Nardo Gray and retains its matchingnumbers mid-mounted engine and gearbox. Based on the setup, its 90-degree V8 is fitted longitudinally and has been tuned to produce between 700 and 1,000 horsepower.

The F40 offered was initially constructed as an early non-cat,

non-adjust F40; this Ferrari, Chassis No. 80782, was delivered new to Kroymans following completion at the factory in November 1989. According to the consignor, the car remained in the Netherlands until 1992, when it was rebuilt for racing by Peter van Erp of Cavallino Tuning, the racing arm of Kroymans. While becoming a race-ready vehicle, it was repainted yellow.

After it was complete, the F40 was sold to Dutch Racing Promotions of Blaricum, Netherlands, for use by H. W. te Pas. Te Pas raced it alongside Duncan Huisman and David Hart

during the 1993 and 1994 seasons.

In the mid-1990s, the car underwent engine upgrade work in collaboration with the racing shop Michelotto, which increased the output to over 700 horsepower. The vehicle later participated in the Ferrari/Porsche Challenge and was driven by David Hart and Mike Hezemans. In 1997, the car was sold to Michel Oprey, a known Ferrari collector, who commissioned further mechanical work on the vehicle throughout the winter of 1997-98. It raced again with H. W. te Pas, David Hart and Bert Ploeg in the same series in 1998.

The car was serviced by Elias Elia of Autofficina in Epsom, Surrey, in the U.K., with a previous owner in 2019. This service included testing the suspension and fitting new fuel tanks and fire extinguisher. Upon its acquisition by the current owner, the F40 was shipped to the Zanasi Group of Maranello, Italy, where it received a cosmetic restoration to its current livery.

Bill Wallace’s & Chuck Puth’s Racy XK120 (II)

Car restorer Bill Wallace and his business partner and close friend, Chuck Puth, are almost at the finish line on a nut-and-bolts restoration of their one-off 1952 Jaguar XK120; they will be applying shortly to compete at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance this August. They’re ready for the concours judges to take their magnifying glasses to it. Then they hope to be tipping glasses and singing a big British “Cheers.”

Recall that the left-hand-drive Jaguar XK120 roadster is one of six that appeared in the promotional Race of Champions May 10, 1952, in Silverstone, England, piloted by six standout drivers from around the world, including the great Stirling Moss, who won the contest, designed to promote the car in the developing United States market.

Wallace formerly owned Autobahn Collision and Preferred Collision, both in the Scottsdale Airpark. In 2019, he opened Impact Collision shop in Fountain Hills, 10 miles east of Scottsdale. His daughter, Shanti, assists him as the company office manager; she has a bachelor’s and an MBA, both from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Two classic restoration

techs, Aaron Guthrie and Flo Augustin, led the restoration.

Puth is a Rumson, New Jersey, native; he built homes and apartment communities there until five years ago. Today, he and his wife Debbie live in Montecito, California, where their children are in the music industry: Charlie, Stephen and Mikaela, who manages Charlie’s career.

Documented by a certificate of authenticity from Jaguar, the one-off XK 120 is the only one in bronze and is probably the last of the sextet existing. Destined for shipment to United States, the left-hand-drive sports cars were built in March and April of 1952 with VINs 672012; 672063; 672070, Wallace’s and Puth’s steel-bodied car, built April 23, 1952; 672080; 672094; and 672104. As yet, no one has been able to identify which man drove which car in the “Race of Champions.”

At the request of William Lyons, founder and CEO of the company, Jaguar quickly designed the XK120 in 1948 to accommodate the new XK twin-cam engines that would win five times at Le Mans in the 1950s in the magnificent Types C and D. The model debuted at the London Motor Show in

October 1948; capable of 120 mph, it was the world’s fastest production car.

After the race, three of the cars were shipped to Charles H. ‘Chuck’ Hornburg Jr. in Los Angeles and three to Max Hoffman, who had a Park Avenue Jag dealership. Meant for private sales, not racing, the six Jags were not identified to buyers as those that had participated in the Race of Champions.

Hoffman sold #672070 to a retired New Jersey man who drove it every day and painted it white. From these times is a 1979 DMV sticker from New York State that’s still affixed to the original windshield. “What’s better than that for authentic?” Wallace asks, with a characteristic laugh.

An astute Oklahoma collector bought the XK120 from the New Jersey man started to disassemble it for restoration and stored the car in his barn, in pieces.

He knew the car for the rare vehicle it was because he had searched down the VIN in sources such as Jag Data, determining that this was one of the six Race of Champions cars. He was not able to find the other five during the exhaustive 12-year search, Puth says.

From the Start, Challenges

“We are doing everything by the book, to the letter,” Wallace explains, noting the shop is following a concours-level book to check every detail including fit and finish, badging, exhaust and the color-keyed steel wheels. “Everything is original or original refurbished and era correct,” he adds. “We’re looking at everything the judges are going to be looking at it. That means every grommet and every clamp, every wire.”

The engine and tranny have been redone to original specs by California-based specialists, and the new interior in original biscuit and tan was also completed there by Classic Car Interiors, which specializes in work on concours-grade for British and European cars. The convertible top, or “hood” in England, is fawn.

One major challenge was sourcing the parts, especially during the pandemic. Through web searches, Wallace found a number of components, including a set of original unused valve caps; a tool roll, with tools that show they’ve been used by the side of the road or in the garage; an original

wood and brass hand tire pump, which also stows in the boot. “It has some scratches on it, but we’re keeping it that way; that says authentic and that it’s been used," he says.

He and his crew are refurbishing the original steering wheel and the horn button with an acrylic inset. And, they’ve found an original ivory flying cat “growler” emblem which attaches to the bonnet. “We also found a contemporary duplication, too, for use when the car isn’t being judged; the original is rare and valuable,” Wallace explains.

Through a friend, he also found authentic English plates. “A client of mine loves British cars and picked them up in Europe about 20 years ago,” Wallace says, noting that they have the correct badging documenting that they are original European plates.

Shanti’s persistent sourcing skills have been invaluable. The XK120 as sold did not have the original hood latch mounting bracket which secures the bonnet. “Shanti spent hours looking for it and found it through an American company that had it

in a warehouse in England,” Wallace recalls. “There was just one left.”

The two six-volt batteries, mounted in the middle of the car adjacent to each other, required a special order facilitated by Shanti and special attention from technicians Guthrie and Augustin.

“The two sixes were necessary because when the temperature was below freezing, which is common in England, the batteries depleted and you wouldn’t have enough starting power.”

Guthrie points out that a channel delivers radiant heat from the engine compartment back to the units: “So, as soon as you start the car, the engine heat begins to warm up the batteries.”

Jag & Friendship Joys

“Our common joy is to bring cars like this back to life,” Puth says. “I was in Vermont a while ago and noticed that so

many of the old barns are like that, so you just think how good it would be to see them vital again. It’s like that with the old cars, too.”

In 2020, the men started working together to restore Puth’s badly aged 1967 Lincoln Continental, and they’ve also collaborated on a magnificent two-tone 1963 Austin-Healey, which also began with the parts in boxes. “A real friendship starts with the love of something. In this case, we love the car and trust each other restoring it,” Puth says.

He adds: “I’ve seen so many classics, survivor cars, just sitting out there, and, as they say, once they are gone, they are gone. The Austin-Healey, for instance, would qualify for historic races. We’re restoring this XK120 with this in mind as well and want to select others after this. A Mercedes Gullwing, perhaps, or one of those elegant Facel Vegas from the ’50s and ’60s with Chrysler Hemis. Then we want

to show them to the world.”

The two men, in fact are considering a television show based on this common passion. “We’ll choose a classic, talk about how we found it, the history and the restoration process,” Wallace says. “We’ll do one, then move to another. We’re not going to say yes to every car. We’re not the fast food stop of car restoration. We are going to select cars that deserve more than sitting, aging, in a garage a back lot, a barn.”

Internet prime time will have its time. Right now, it’s Jag time. “This very special XK120 has got that James Bond look and it’s unique in styling. It’s 100% factory, and everything is in the right place. There’s heritage here. And pedigree. We’re ready.”

“My name is Adrian Suciu, and I am the owner of Steering Wheel Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was born in Timisoara, Romania; after finishing high school, I joined the army. In 2001, I decided with my wife, Luminita, to move to Spain and get married.

“I had to accept any job opportunity to be able to maintain my family. I used to work as a postman, a construction worker and I even opened a second-hand store. Then, my wife and I decided for me to go to Romania to get my truck driver’s license so I could have a more stable job. But I kept searching for more things to do because that wasn’t my dream.

“I went to Timișoara, and my brother gave me a steering wheel to wrap in leather. I didn’t know that it was possible to do that, so I told him that I would buy a case from the store. He told me that he didn’t want that and that he wanted it custom made. I went to a guy that wrapped steering wheels in leather named Silviu. I was just observing how he was

doing his job and I was fascinated by his work. I was just like a little kid in Legoland. I felt like I was being told that I had to do this amazing job.

“My wife told me to focus on getting my truck driver's license, but I told her that I would also like to try to have this job which I thought was really amazing and interesting. I got to buy a sewing machine from Romania and I brought it to Spain. When I was trying to put the thread in the machine, I accidentally broke the needle. I didn’t get to accomplish much in Spain.

“In 2015 or 2016, I was thinking of moving to the U.S. with my family. I worked as a truck driver in Spain for about six months, and then we packed our bags and moved to the U.S. I started as a construction worker, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to wrap steering wheels in leather. I was telling my partners from work that I was thinking about wrapping steering wheels, and they told me to go for it. I began searching through the internet to get some thread, leather and more.

“My very first steering wheel that I attempted to wrap took days to finish, I would get out of my garage exhausted. I wanted to see how someone would react to my new work because for me it was something very satisfying to see what amazing things I could make with my own hands.

“During the week, I would go to shops and garages that had custom cars so I could show them my work. When I saw the shop that I am currently at, I really liked it because I saw that it was very organized and clean. So I told my wife that I wanted to rent a shop for myself to work at with steering wheels; I could only rent a room at that shop, but that was just enough space for me. I asked the owner of the place if I could rent a room there, and he said that I could. I was very happy when I was told that I could rent that room.

“In September, I organized all of my things in my new place and I made myself a table to work on with leather and other stuff. This was where my new adventure began because I was around only exotic cars and that was how my perspective changed and went to the next level. People started talking about me and recommending me.

“I started going to every car event that I possibly could and sometimes I would even go to three events on Saturdays. One of the events takes place in Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson; I would go around there with my business cards and a steering wheel, and people would ask me why I was carrying a steering wheel with me. This year was amazing for me because finally I was able to put up a stand at Barrett-Jackson. I had some customers that would come over to my stand and congratulate me because I got to put my stand at the biggest car auction in the world. It was tiring but I enjoyed it because I was doing it with passion.

A Stellar Year for Sotheby’s

This was another great year for our Canadian Sotheby’s regional sales for collectibles, a record $925 million. “We are the world’s largest collector car auction house by total sales, with more than 40 years of proven results in the industry,” says Gord Duff, RM’s global head of auctions in Ontario, Canada.

He adds: “Our services are vertically integrated, from live and online auctions and private sales to estate planning and financial services, and our international team of car specialists provide an unsurpassed level of service to the global collector car market.”

In August 2018, for example, well-known Ferrari collector Greg Whitten of Seattle, Washington, sold his 1962 250 GTO, chassis 3413, through RM for a record $48.4 million — still the highest price ever achieved for a Prancing Horse at auction.

And this past year, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR ‘Uhlenhaut

Coupé brought €135,000,000 to become the most valuable car ever sold and, from the same year, a Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti garnered more than $22 million to become the most valuable car sold during Monterey Car Week. Volare Hangars at Pegasus Airpark: First Class for Your Aircraft & Toys

The Equity 1000 team have landed on a great opportunity for those looking for premier private hangar space in the Phoenix area to store their planes, helicopters, collectible cars and more.

Their Volare Hangars development is at Pegasus Airpark (5AZ3) in Queen Creek, the award-winning community about an hour from downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale and ten minutes south of the Mesa Gateway Airport. Comprising 24 standard hangars and 10 upgraded executive hangars, 60by-60 square feet to 80-by-80 square feet, Pegasus is a rare gated aviation- and equestrian-focused community, adjacent to the private airport’s large paved runway, 5,124 feet by 80 feet.

The zoning and site plan has been fully approved by the town, with conceptual drawings and unit reservations available. Equity 1000 LLC, a local family-operated company owned by the Panfils, has about 50% of the phase I units reserved. “We will be releasing purchase contracts within the next 30 days or so and have only started marketing since the

beginning of December 2022,” says John Panfil, a longtime Valley resident and former owner of Anthem Motors in north Phoenix. Delivery of the first units is expected to be during the third or fourth quarter of this year, he adds.

This Volare development originated from a combination of passion and market conditions by the family, including Johnnie, his son, he explains. They were searching for a hangar in Pegasus before coming across the opportunity to develop this vacant land and provide high-end hangars to the rapidly growing general aviation market, which is experiencing a significant shortage of places to store aircraft according to industry data and FAA’s congressional hearings, says Johnnie.

One reason for this shortage is that most airports are owned by municipalities, which have strict requirements they must meet for FAA funding. “Public airports receiving funding from the FAA are required to have ground leases on hangars located within the airport, and, once the initial term and any renewals are over, the airport authorities can take ownership of the hangar. So, at most airports, hangars are only

available with limited ownership rights due to ground leases that come with strict rules and restrictions, unlike private airports,” explains John.

Private airports, such as Pegasus Airpark, provide greater ownership rights without any ground leases; they are managed and maintained by a community association as they do not receive funding from FAA. Therefore, with fewer restrictions on how the hangars can be used, you can also store cars, RVs, boats, and other equipment without any issues.

“You own the hangar fee simple, forever allowing it to be passed down for generations and to appreciate in value without the diminishing returns caused by ground leases. You can also modify and make improvements to the interior of the hangar without concerns of an authority taking ownership of your hangar or kicking you out,” John explains.

Volare’s standard hangars are pre-engineered metal construction for the exterior and demising walls. They will also include features such as premium hydraulic hangar doors,

three-phase power supply, plumbing to install restrooms and/or appliances, insulated ceiling/walls and additional roof structure ready for future HVAC systems. Buyers of these units can build out “man caves” or small offices and restrooms in addition to storing aircraft.

The larger executive hangars will utilize commercial-grade CMU block construction for the exterior and demising walls, providing a substantial upgrade in build quality, insulation and sound attenuation. These units will have dedicated street addresses with private driveways and patios and greater flexibility in potential uses, including building out a portion of the interior into a residence.

Tucson-Based Crown Concepts Rides Its Recent Restorations into This Year’s Barrett-Jackson Builders Cup

The popular Barrett-Jackson Cup custom car competition returns this month as part of the 2023 collector car auction festivities at WestWorld. The contest selects 50 of the top custom car and truck creations that battle it out for multiple prizes ending in the selection of the Ultimate Best in Show as well as a People’s Choice Award that is picked by auction fans nationwide via social media.

Of those top 50 participants are two classic rides recently restored by Tucson-based Crown Concepts, from owners Curtis Brown and Joey Martin. The duo is proudly boasting their updated rides for the annual motomania event, including a 1961 Willys Jeep Truck and a 1969 Buick GS400, two rides with vast visual differences.

According to marketing director Christopher Loa, these two cars specifically show “the best of what Crown has done in terms of build quality and custom design up to this point. We have built several classic cars since we opened our doors in 2016, but the current Crown Customs team lead these two projects from start to finish for our customers and we

are very proud of what was accomplished.”

The two models have been passion projects for the team, having worked on them for over a year each. Now, they’re ready for their big debut on what is quite possibly the auto industry’s premier event in the United States. And while Crown Concepts has bought and sold cars at Barrett-Jackson in previous years, including a custom 1955 Chevy Bel-air that the team built and sold in 2020, this will be its first year entering into the Cup builders competition.

There are a total of 50 Cup vehicles that will grace the stage at the Scottsdale Auction beginning Saturday, January 21. Builders Bobby Alloway and Troy Trepanier will select the Top Five finalists competing for the Ultimate Best in Show prize and will announce the winner at the beginning of the day the following Saturday, January 28.

“We are very excited that two of our builds were chosen for this year's competition, and although we are hoping to win with either one,” Loa explains, “I think our team is most

Shifting to Hyper-Speed Exclusive Hypercar Owners Gather in the Desert at Hypercar Invitational 2023

When someone gets behind the wheel of a hypercar, such as a Bugatti or Aston Martin, the last thing they want to worry about when shifting gears is local sound ordinances. And with the annual Hypercar Invitational coming around the bend this spring, the event’s organizers wanted a way around that issue. Enter: Las Vegas.

This April, the desert surrounding Sin City will play host to the fifth annual Hypercar gathering which has previously been held in Monterey, California. Held at Vegas’s Spring Mountain Raceway over three days, this year’s car fest will carry over everything it’s known for—including enviable rides, decadent tastes and tipples, and today’s top drivers—plus the unfettered roar of exceptional engines.

Apart from eschewing community-based decibel limits, guests will have the opportunity to experience cars such as Hennessy, Pagani, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari, Zenvo, Koenigsegg, Porsche, and a few surprises, according to Hypercar’s Julian Bowden.

“What sets us apart from others is the ability for guests to interact and create intimate relationships with key members

from these brands, such as engineers, designers, and executives, while having the opportunity to actually experience these machines with the visionaries who conceived and built them,” Bowden explains.

“The three-and-a-half-day event is white glove and highly curated. Track days, aviation experiences, dinners, and a variety of surprises, plus the opportunity for our guests to bring as many of their cars as they wish to experience in this special setting. HI guests often show up with their own semis and drive something new each session.”

This exclusive luxury event was created five years ago by avid collector and moto enthusiast Alessandro Borroni, a native of Milan, Italy. His vision was to create a new version of the auto show, something dynamic and exciting, an insider’s event where the top manufacturers and collectors could come together to share ideas and a common passion.

After a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Borroni brought the invitational back to the Bay Area of California in 2021 before deciding to kick up some dust in the Las Vegas desert for this year’s event, keeping it intimate and exclusive.

So, who gets to spin their wheels at this hyper-charged event? In order to qualify for an invitation to Hypercar Invitational, a driver must have an impressive car collection, strong buying power, and a deep interest in the hypercar automotive niche.

Due to the curated nature of the event, invitations are limited. However, invited guests may bring as many of their cars as they want to take for a spin or just show off in the late spring sunshine.

“We have allocated all of the invites to our partnering manufacturers and dealers. In order to receive an invitation drivers must be vetted and invited by one of our collaborating brand ambassadors,” notes Bowden. “Occasionally, we select from our individual inbound request list if the guest has a really unique car which can enhance the selection at the event, whether it’s a special 60’s racer like the jet-powered Howmet car or a 90’s legend like the McLaren F1 HDK or the carbon EB110SS which showed up in previous years.”

This year, with the change of venue, instead of kicking things off with a coastal drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, drivers can take to the desert tracks to let loose under the sun. From test drives to high-speed runs on closed-off roads in the desert, to a USA-first 9-mile Nurburgring-like track experience, Hypercar Invitational will offer even the most jaded enthusiast some first-ever level experience, and shift their passions for cars to a whole new level.

The Da Vinci of Car Art

Mark Vinci jokingly explains that he removed the “da” in respect to the Italian artist of the 15th/16th century, but, for his car parts art, even the great Leonardo would agree he can proudly keep it.

Because of the artistry of the 30-year Valley resident, Fords and Chevys, Caddys, Beemers and other marques all receive meticulous restorations. Vinci crushes it every time he works with retired hoods, doors and trunks.

“Most of the work I make is created with the materials we see while driving: billboard paper, car parts and glass. The parts are composed into sculptures, and glass is embedded into some of the images, he explains.

He starts by collecting wrecked parts, “the more wrecked the better,” he says. He stacks up the parts, and a double roller driver smashes them into elegant ribbons of steel. Next, he acid washes and chops up the arts for individual pieces. He reassembles the parts, welding them into compositions. Then he powdercoats or finishes them with automotive paint.

Finally, his multi-faceted works are parked on the walls of Valley hotels, such as the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, the Valley Ho Hotel, Scottsdale, or in office settings in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area.

Arizona and California galleries have previously shown his work, including Gebery Gallery in Scottsdale and Venice, California, Fresh Paint Contemporary in Culver City, California, with 9 The Gallery in Phoenix and on Singluart.com.

Vinci was born in Newark, N.J., and raised in northern New Jersey in East Hanover, about 25 miles west of New York City. From an early time, he was drawing all the time. “It was about the only thing I was good at,” he recalls with a chuckle.

He earned a B.F.A. at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, where in his final year he aced a painting class, inspiring him to matriculate at the School of Visual Arts in New York City to improve his skills. A second impetus toward fine art followed when he became dissatisfied with his career as a graphic designer, even though he fared well in New York, Atlanta and Phoenix, winning four Emmys.

Automotive passion arrived through his maternal grandfather, Tony Pace, a car dealer. “I spent more time driving with him than anybody else before I learned to drive,” he recalls. “As you would expect, cars were the deal: driving to get cars, going to see cars, being in car lots, going to Jerome Avenue in the Bronx where the greatest concentration of wholesale car dealers in the Northeast was located.”

These moving memories fuel his art. “Have you ever experienced driving under an elevated subway or elevated rail line or roadway?” he asks. “The flashing of light and shadow is like watching an old movie that has a strobe effect. That’s where art comes from. And before you were the driver, you were the passenger, the one who could put your face against the window or out the window and look up at the flashing of light and shadow.”

He adds: “My work is dynamic visual abstraction about urban movement: transient visual moments captured at high speed, snippets and fragments framed and defined by the cityscape, quickly forgotten, yet leaving a residual imprint that is an unconscious distillation of our collective experience.”

About five minutes ago, your wife was stalked into a department store by a man wearing a medical face mask, with two accomplices trailing him, similarly disguised; she’s fine, the police have descriptions and are searching for them. Please come quickly, she texts.

Or, you have been receiving email threats from a radical environmental organization accusing you of “unforgivably slaying Mother Earth”; you’re the CEO of a mega-company that, among other lawn-care products, manufactures pesticides.

Worse, your daughter has come within seconds of being abducted by sex traffickers a few miles from the luxury home and guard/gated community you have worked so many years to achieve. Fortunately, an off-duty police officer saw the threat and intervened.

In each scenario, your security and your family’s are being threatened. As a person of means, you are tired of feeling vulnerable; you want these threats to end or, at least, you want to know how you and your family can be in control moving on.

“We are what we call ‘blindspot coaches’; we specialize in helping people see things before they happen and avoid them if possible or, if they are unavoidable, what to do when they do occur,” says Michael Johnson, who founded Shockwave Defense February 5, 2002.

For the highly acclaimed USAF Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (S.E.R E.) school in the state of Washington, for example, he and his staff teach instructors how to augment their program with additional life-saving skills so that they can train pilots, dignitaries and other persons of importance what to do if they are captured.

One program his company offers is “Protected.” With this, Johnson and his staff do threat and vulnerability assessments of businesses and homes, helping to safeguard clients from hostile entries and identifying danger zones. During the initial interview, he asks a client about his or her biggest concerns and challenges. “It’s basic information about who you are,” he explains. “We discover fears and concerns and what is threatening you in order to conquer them.”

From offices in Albuquerque, Scottsdale and Houston, he works with staff and coordinates with other organizations, in particular, Laser Shot Simulations for scenario-based training and the DeliverFund, which includes former Navy Seals, NSA, CIA and Special Ops agents who target human traffickers, using highly specialized software to track them and take them down. The number of women and children forced into sexual slavery each year in the United States may be as high as 325,000, a Department of Health and Human Services has estimated.

A second Shockwave Defense program, Dangerous in 4 Hours, teaches students how to gain the mindset and skillset to be immediately effective in hand-to-hand combat, knife skills and how to improvise tools such as pens and clipboards. Still another, Beyond the Boardroom, offers skills and tactics for executives. In the Valley, for instance, he’s trained upper-management personnel at Shamrock Foods to overcome adversity.

“We understand the world of violence,” Johnson says. “We train you to think like the enemy and become the enemy of the enemy. We train good people like you how to be dangerous to bad people like them.”
