Radford Racing School Becomes First in the Country to Offer Trans Am Racing Program with Genuine TA2 Racing Cars Radford Racing School has announced the debut of a Trans Am Racing program making it the only school in the U.S. to offer such a racing experience. The new Trans Am program was developed in collaboration with legendary driver development coach and champion NASCAR and Xfinity Series racer Chris Cook, who has trained some of the world’s greatest drivers including Tony Stewart, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, and Johnny O’Connell, a four-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new program features late-model TA2 racecars that are offered by Chris Cook Performance through Tom Nelson Motorsports. The first Trans Am Racing program at Radford Racing School kicks off November 1.

School. “It’s a natural extension of our current courses and is a part of our expansion as a world-class high performance driving school. Working with Chris, we designed this program for both novice enthusiasts looking to experience the raw performance of a TA2 racecar and professional drivers who want additional training. Often, they ended up carrying the bare property because of a down market or they didn’t finish building the home or they lost money when it finally sold to a savvy low buyer watching it sit for an extended time.

When professionals started abandoning dense work spaces and working at home –– a lifestyle change many of us might have chosen as soon as the internet made office presence not universally necessary –– they wanted additional amenities such as dual offices and more sophisticated work-out rooms and spas. Why not incorporate multiple services into the live/work space if your home is going to be used more?

Now with a robust home market, particularly in Arizona, investors and builders are investing money in premier properties. That’s because quality buyers are there and willing to purchase specs on premium land built by superlative builders.

Then the cost of money dropped for the well-credited, and income for many considerably improved. Executives found working at home beneficial: You don’t have to duel with traffic, and pajamas or work-out clothes, rather than business suits, allowed comfort and productivity at the same time.

“A few years ago, people were downsizing, but now it’s a good time for entrepreneurs who want larger custom homes,” says Bill Bulaga, my colleague at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale in our Private Client Group.

They learned during the height of the pandemic they could use that time making money and enjoying their homes and their families.” He cautions, though: “Buying a luxury spec successfully depends on the builder you are going to. Do your due diligence and homework on what builder you are purchasing from. It’s crucial to find someone who has a great reputation and has been building quality for years. When you step into high-end luxury specs and you are spending this kind of money, you want a builder that will stand by their work –– not a face that will take your check and disappear.” During the last year, style preferences have also changed. Modern European has significant increased in popularity, and interior surface colors, fabrics and styles have shifted toward lighter palettes. Smart home systems have become a necessity, with new versions of high-definition audio, video, security and lighting systems taking precedence. The new exterior and interior look, open floor plans and those cutting-edge components are what today’s buyers are looking for. Let’s call it a supply and demand issue: It simply started to make sense for builders to build them. The more special its location, with acre-plus lots, unobstructed mountain views, high-quality finishings, the better money the specs are achieving. Our most recent spec offerings are two single-level spec homes in premium Paradise Valley locations, both under construction by Legendary Homes. “We’ve been building luxury homes in Arizona for 35 years, about 125 homes,

Ford GT National Rally breaks records written by Peter Volny photos by Matthew Fink & Rob Mains Over one hundred Ford GTs from model years 2005-2006 and 2017-2021 gathered the first week of November for their Annual Rally. This was the first time it has been held in Arizona. Owners and cars came from over thirty states and Canada, with one owner actually flying two cars in from Hawaii. This was the thirteenth meet and some owners have attended all thirteen.

Sunday morning a special Ford GT Cars & Coffee was held at the Fourtillfour coffee shop in Old Town Scottsdale, where passing motorists and pedestrians were treated to an exceptionally colorful display. On Sunday evening a cocktail party was held at the Otto Car Club where a genuine Le Mans Mirage Ford Race Car from the 1970’s, and a current Ford GT Le Mans racer were displayed.

David Bannister, founder of the Ford GT Forum and Chip Beck, Moderator of the Forum were the lead organizers. The Forum, which has grown to over five hundred members, was created to allow owners to stay up to date with all the aspects of these very rare cars. Jay Leno, also a GT owner, is a member. Members live all over the world including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and South America.

Monday morning saw the GTs depart the host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale, where a whole floor of the parking garage was dedicated exclusively to the GTs, to drive to the park in Fountain Hills where a concours was held and group photographs taken. From there they drove over to

Dinner that night was at the Hyatt and custom awards were given to Brian Naylor, chief Ford GT mechanic at Sanderson Ford, the only authorized Ford GT servicing dealer in Arizona; David Bannister, founder of the GT Forum; Raj Nair, President & CEO of Multimatic, who manufacture the current Ford GT; and Mark Heidaker who holds the record for the fastest Ford GT, a 3,700 horsepower missile that has exceeded 300MPH at the Texas Mile and does 0-300 in just 19 mind-boggling seconds.

On Tuesday a 250- mile rally saw the cars drive north up the Beeline Highway to Payson, west to the winding hills of Jerome and back to the Hyatt for a cocktail party. Wednesday was a private track day at the APEX track in Maricopa, where the actual Ford GT, the only car ever to win the LeMans 24-hour race twice was on display. While the drivers were at the track a cooking class was held at the Hyatt for spouses. That night everyone moseyed over to Desert Foothills, a western themed event center in North Scottsdale where a cowboy cookout and western photo booth kept everyone well fed and entertained.

The successful racing car was followed in 1954 by the 300 SL production sports car (W 198), which is called the "Gullwing" because of its unusual doors. In 1999, a jury of motoring journalists voted it the "Sports Car of the Century." Other highlights of the model history include the "Pagoda" (W 113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R 107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R 129, which is considered an automotive sculpture because of its striking wedge shape. In the 1960s, Birmingham, Alabama’s George Barber won racing Porsches. Today his home-town Vintage Motorsports Museum is winning both car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Documented in 2016 as the world’s largest motorcycle museum by Guinness World Records, the venue has 1,606 motorcycles, 118 cars (64 of these Lotus classics), although this changes daily, says Lee L. Woehle, the museum’s archivist. Last year, the museum and park hosted 368,000 visitors, including more than 3,000 from other countries. After 63 first-place wins, Barber continued his success as a business executive. In 1989, he revived his motorsports passion by collecting and restoring classic cars. Because great car collections had already been established, he listened to longtime friend Dave Hooper, a motorcycle enthusiast who ran Barber’s delivery fleet for 27 years. “He suggested that Barber shift his focus from cars to motorcycles and create a museum which reflected the history of motorcycles around the world,” Woehle explains. “He wanted to preserve motorcycle history in the United States in a way that represents an international aspect and

to supply an example of motorcycles that until then could only have been seen in books and magazines,” she adds. “So he set about building the world’s ‘best and largest’ motorcycle collection.” Hooper assisted two years later, in 1991, gifting him two bikes from his collection, including a rare, beautifully detailed 1952 Victoria Bergmeister. “Enjoying the Bergmeister’s beauty, he appreciated motorcycles for much more than just fast machines,” Woehle says. “They were also works of art.” Barber hadn’t forgotten about his racing passion. In 1992, The Barber Racing Team competed in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) series in in Daytona. The team won premier races and competed in the U.S. and Europe until 1998, bringing seven national championships back home. As a 501(c)3 tax-exempt private operating foundation, the museum opened to the public in March 1995 at its original Southside Birmingham location. Here, the Barber staff conserved or restored motorcycles to running condition, and, in some cases, to competition-ready shape. This location remained open until November 2002.

In 1998, New York’s famed Guggenheim Museum requested 21 bikes for exhibit at its “The Art of the Motorcycle,” which also traveled to the Field Museum in Chicago and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain. Barber said, “We can do this in Birmingham!” He imagined a one-of-a-kind facility with a road course where his collection could be demonstrated. England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed has featured cars from the Barber collection, and the museum has shown motorcycles twice at Pebble Beach, winning a first-place trophy both times. And recently, the museum loaned motorcycles to the QAGMO (Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art) Show, “The Motorcycle Design, Art, Desire.” In 2003, Barber acquired an 880-acre property in Birmingham, consulting with world champion racers John Surtees and Dan Gurney and others about the design. On September 19, 2003, the museum opened, including a 16-turn, 2.38 mile racetrack and motorcycles that span 100-plus years of production. More than 1,000 bikes can be seen on any day, and 220 different manufacturers from 22 countries are represented in the collection: Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, Showa, DSK and Cagiva. The park is also home to the Porsche Driving Experience,

and automakers have used it to stage vehicle debuts and film commercials. In addition, restorations are done in-house; all of the vehicles are operable, and every day examples are demonstrated on the track. The Barber Proving Grounds was built in 2014 next to the racetrack; it consists of a track area, which can be converted to various layouts and a wet/dry skidpad. The proving grounds allow users to demonstrate vehicle capabilities such as accident avoidance, braking, turning and acceleration. Mercedes-Benz began using the grounds for their employees’ “Brand Immersion Experience” in October, and other companies book the area for product debuts, kart racing, driving schools and safety instruction. Cycles and Lotuses Woehle explains that the museum’s earliest motorcycle is a 1902 Steffey and the earliest car a 1923 Ford Model T. The most recent vehicles are a 2021 MV Agusta Super Veloce motorcycle and a 2016 Porsche 918. The earliest acquired by Barber is a 1953 Victoria Bergmeister motorcycle and a 1958 Chevrolet Impala Bel Air. The most recent acquisitions: a 1987 RADD MC² motorcycle and a 1965 Brabham BT8 automobile.

▪1954 AJS E95 –– “Introduced in 1952, the E95 was a muchredesigned version of the E90 horizontal twin, which was known as the “Porcupine” due to the spiky finning on the cylinder head. The original design was drawn pre-WWII when supercharging was legal; when racing resumed in the 1940s, however, supercharging was banned, and the Porcupine was uncompetitive. The power unit was redesigned to be normally aspirated, and the cylinders were given a 45-degree angle to shorten the wheelbase to improve handling. While fast, the E-95 was not reliable, so factory involvement in the Grand Prix was discontinued.”
