Few vehicles in the world can be instantly identified by just three letters. But to motoring enthusiasts everywhere, "GT-R" has become synonymous with excitement, high performance and unparalleled refinement. Making its debut at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the 2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition takes the nameplate to a level that was unimaginable when it was first introduced 50 years ago. To celebrate the half-century of the GT-R, engineers challenged themselves to find undiscovered performance potential while still making sure the car can be enjoyed by drivers at any level. "A GT-R is about total balance management," said Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R. "It is not about chasing a power figures, but creating a new GT-R, where no aspect has been overlooked. This is appropriate to celebrate the GT-R 50th anniversary."

A 50th Anniversary Celebration The 2020 Nissan GT-R will come in three trim levels in most markets: GT-R Premium, GT-R Track Edition and GT-R NISMO. In select regions, there will also be the Pure, Prestige and Black models, but it is the 50th Anniversary Edition that truly celebrates the GT-R's rich heritage. The special edition car will come in three heritage-era, two-tone exterior color combinations meant to represent the GT-R's liveries from the Japan GP series – of which the original GT-R was born to dominate in. Retired since the GT-R "R34" model, Bayside (Wangan) Blue makes a return, complete with white racing stripes. A four-coat, double-heat treatment process ensures a vivid blue with striking highlights and deep shadows. Upgraded performance, born from racing While many believed that the refinement and performance of the GT-R's 565-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twinturbocharged engine – each handcrafted by its own takumi technician – were so high that there was no room for

improvement, the car's engineers had a few tricks up their sleeves. Among them was incorporating new turbochargers, which help increase the engine's low rpm response due to an abradable seal, providing tighter clearances and a 5% increase in efficiency. Overall, they provide even sharper engine response in and out of corners, making the driving experience more rewarding and richer than ever before. The exhaust manifolds, inspired by racing technology, have optimized turbo flange attachment points, which allow for easier servicing and potential tuning, without touching the exhaust manifold. GT-R features a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with a refined "R mode," made for both road and track. It features more aggressive downshifts to better anticipate swift cornering exits, with gear selection happening during ABS engagement, resulting in reduced understeer and a more driver-intuitive feeling. The adaptive shift control is programmed to change shift schedules to fit the user's driving style, making it possible to drive according to the law on public roads, with full brute force available on the race track, without needing to manually change shift modes (in A mode/R mode). First Camelback Vintage Motor Show Raises Money for Hope Women’s Center written by David M. Brown photos by Alex Sczudlo The inaugural Camelback Vintage Motor Show April 6 at Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, raised $2,100 for the Hope Women’s Center as 300 car fans enjoyed more than 70 cars 1976 and before, including 13 displayed by the Arizona Citroen Enthusiasts (ACE), celebrating the French marque’s 100th anniversary this year.
Show: a 1956 Traction Avant and a 1925 C3 Cloverleaf. He also brought a very rare Citroen-based two-seater Burton. For the General Best of Show, Brett Donaldson won for his 1964 Austin Healey 3000. In four days, 1,300-plus vehicles generated $39-plus million for the Walworth, Wisconsin-based company.
Silverstone Opaco roof, Serial No. 178078 is one of 599 produced and one of just 125 sent to the U.S. The six-liter V-12 engine develops 661 HP and 488 lb-ft of torque connected to a paddle-shifted F1 Superfast six-speed. “State Farm Stadium was an incredible facility to work with and provides a wonderful foundation for growth,” says Mecum CEO Dave Magers. “We’re also thrilled that the city of Glendale and Mayor Jerry Weiers proved to be natural and valued partners in the promotion of this great event and that our visions for Mecum’s growth in Arizona are in total alignment. The top three cars were led by a legendary 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T Convertible (Lot S101), which brought $1.43 million. One of 12 built and one of only five with the A833 18-spline 4-speed transmission, the classic muscle car also has the optional Super Track Pak, including a 4.10-geared Dana 60 Sure Grip differential, extreme-duty suspension and cooling components and power front disc brakes. A 1932 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Torpedo Berline (S123) sold for $880,000. Debuted at the New York Auto Salon on December 1, 1928, the Model J carries an inline-8 designed by the great Fred Duesenberg, displacing 420 cubic inches and producing 265 horses. This J546 is the only Model J by Rollston Coachworks with the Style 342 Torpedo Sedan or Berline body.
Following the event, a 2016 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta was sold for $5.5 million.

A Truly One-of-a-Kind Service AZ Euros carves out its own stake in the import world one car at a time written by Nick Esquer
photos by Ruggy Ahumada From November through April, Arizona sees a huge influx of people coming down from Canada to get away from blizzards, and the cold and the dark of the harsh winters up north. But come May, those part-time Arizonans pack up and head back home to beat the heat that’s waiting for them. Yet another import from Canada that comes down regularly is that of the Canadian import car. But before those cars can be brought in and sold in the United States they need to meet import standards through the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency. This can only be achieved through modifications to the vehicles, even after initially being admitted. And this process, although costly, is a must for car owners looking to enjoy their import vehicle. However, here in Arizona, there is only one registered import service that can serve customers and meet the standards and regulations needed to keep things above board. That service is Mesa-based AZ Euros, a homegrown auto import shop and sales location that’s been serving the public since 2013. Headed up by friends Chad Day and Christian Andrade, the auto sales and service business started out of their shared passion for cars–Chad, for selling cars, and Christian, for working on them. Initially, the duo wanted to offer the public a unique inventory with hands-on and personalized service. Those ingredients continue today, but have evolved to focus more on the company’s main feature, imports. “As far as a daily mission we agree that without our customers being happy, we wouldn’t be where we are. It’s helped us to grow our business and we just want to do honest and clean work. That’s our thing, offering what other guys down the street can’t,” says Andrade. AZ Euros offers car buyers a solid lineup of cars for sale, including Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche, brands that the two car enthusiasts love to drive and work on. As service specialists, AZ Euros makes it a point to handle anything bumper to bumper. With six full-time employees, the Volume XVI, Number 04
shop offers full-service options for cars, except for painting. Engine swaps, A/C service, general maintenance, timing belt, safety–they can handle it. “There’s really not a lot we can’t do. Basically anything in between a bumper we can handle. We have figured out what really works in our service department,” adds Andrade. But the main reason why AZ Euros has grown and picked up a more loyal customer base is its truly one-of-a-kind service not offered anywhere else in the state. Dealing with import cars is a long process that takes resources and manpower that much larger shops usually handle. But through their vision, determination, and overall passion to serve the public as the only registered importer in the state, Christian and Chad have cut out a truly unique business platform that’s seen exponential growth. “We’re on a list of less than 80 registered importers in the nation licensed with the NHTSA, and the U.S. government, to bring in cars that are not certified for U.S. highways. These are brought in to conform to U.S. standards, which we take care of, no problem,” explains Day. Currently, the guys behind AZ Euros are focusing on keeping things moving the way they have been, with steady growth and a happy customer base that sees the value in what they offer. And with no competition in sight at the moment, the opportunity is all theirs. “We just want to continue to grow, even though we don’t have a full goal of what that looks like. We truly do enjoy what we have and just want to make our customers happy,” says Andrade. Aston Martin’s first electric model
Aston Martin Lagonda has revealed the final productionready iteration of its first all-electric production car, with the spectacular Rapide E making its world debut at China’s Auto Shanghai motor show.
Unveiled by Aston Martin Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Rapide E is a pivotal model for the luxury marque. Following the success of previous special-edition models, including Aston Martin Vulcan, the Vanquish Zagato family and DB4 GT Continuation, Rapide E continues to deliver a superior level of performance, craftmanship and exclusivity, while also propelling Aston Martin into the all-electric realm. The first car to be built at Aston Martin’s state-of-the-art St Athan production facility – the brand’s Home of Electrification – Rapide E represents a pioneering first step towards achieving the company’s wider electrification strategy and the successful fruition of Lagonda – the world’s first zero-emission luxury brand. A special edition with a production run strictly limited to 155 units, Rapide E has been developed in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE).

Shown for the first time here in Shanghai today, Aston Martin’s design and engineering teams have worked in partnership to extract the optimal aerodynamic performance available from the Rapide’s elegant form. Traditional metal vanes give way to a striking honeycomb front grille. With lower cooling requirements demanded of the EV powertrain, Aston Martin’s aerodynamic engineers have been given the freedom to optimize the aperture of the frontal area, minimising airflow through the car’s body, improving the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and increasing range as a result.
A re-designed underfloor streamlines airflow from the front splitter right the way through to Rapide E’s new larger rear diffuser – a feature that is now wholly dedicated to aero efficiency due to the removal of the exhaust system required before. The model’s forged aluminium aerodynamic wheels – shod with bespoke low rolling-resistance Pirelli P-Zero tires – have also been re-designed to give greater efficiency, without compromising brake cooling capability. A third unjudged “display” level is also offered. There are 13 major classes, and first, second and thirdplace trophies in each level for each class will be awarded as well as a Best of Show.
Automobile entry for the Rod & Custom Show is $30, and motorcycle $20. For Sunday’s Concours, automobiles are $40, motorcycle entry, $25, and bicycle, $15. Tickets are $10 per day per adult. GreatGarages AACA in Hershey, Pa.: 100 Years of Sweet Vehicles written by David M. Brown In Hershey, Pennsylvania, enjoy a Kiss and embrace some great cars. The AACA Museum Inc. opened in June 2003 in the city known for its chocolate factory. The collection features more than 100 cars, motorcycles, automobilia, antique buses in the Museum of Bus Transportation Collection and the Cammack Tucker Gallery, the world’s largest public display of automobiles and artifacts celebrating Preston Tucker’s “Car of Tomorrow.” The predecessor of the automobile is also celebrated in the “Roads to Rails” model train display, built with countryside scenes reminiscent of ’30s, ’40s and ’50s America. In 1993, the museum founders began planning, fundraising and acquiring vehicle donations from individuals, families and organizations. “Unlike some other museums who began as a collection started by one individual, this museum was built by the generosity of many enthusiasts who wanted to share their passion for the history of the Volume XVI, Number 04
automobile,” says Jeffrey Bliemeister, executive director for the museum, an independent 501(c)(3) not affiliated with the Antique Automobile Club of America. In January of 2005, the AACA Museum became one of two automotive museums in the United States to become an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. And, AutoWeek Magazine has named it one of the Top 10 Automotive Museums in the country and Road & Track one of the 12 Best Automotive Museums in the United States. The AACA Museum offers changing exhibits, too. For example, “Studebaker Cool: 114 Years of Innovation” and “Harley-Davidson: History, Mythology, and Perceptions of America’s Motorcycle” are being presented May 18–October 20, 2019. On May 11, hear “Tucker Talk II: The 50 Production Cars,” the second in a three-part series on the history of the Tucker automobile. Among the vehicles displayed are a replica of the Ford Quadricycle, 1896, the inventor’s first self-propelled car; the singer Whitney Houston’s 1986 Rolls-Royce limousine;

a glass-windowed hearse similar to those used for bootlegging during Prohibition; and, on loan, the only existing DeLorean prototype. One vehicle that gets a lot of love is the 12-foot tall, 26foot-long Hershey’s Kissmobile Cruiser, built in 1997 on a GMC chassis resembling three of the company’s Kisses: a classic Hershey’s Kisses Brand Milk Chocolate, a Hershey’s Kiss with Almonds and a Hershey’s Hugs Brand Milk Chocolate. After traveling 250,000-plus miles and distributing two million Hershey’s Kisses for The Hershey Company, it is spending some retirement time at the museum. The car is still owned by The Hershey Company. For like-thinking Forrest Gump, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” You can see the 1959 Lakeland bus that appeared in the eponymous award-winning 1994 movie –– he says goodbye to his girlfriend –– at the one-of-its-kind Bus Transportation Museum. And, the Floinn Café, on the lower level, owned and operated by Florence Fortnoy, is a surviving Wichita, Kansas, diner that was open from 1948 to 1983. For those who remember this uniquely American kind of restaurant, it’s a Valentine Diner, a 1940 Aristocrat model made in Kansas. Inspired by it, diner-frequenters might say: “Where’s that nice “soup jockey” (waitress) with my “draw one in the dark” (black coffee)? Vehicle Vignettes The museum tells the history of its vehicles by enacting a cross-country journey with decade-defining backgrounds such as a vintage gas station from the 1940s and a drive-in of the 1950s where stars were born on the big screen and baby-boomers made in the back seat. For the early-20th-century, when half the cars on the roads were Model Ts, you can see an 1895 Benton Harbor, a 1905 Cadillac Model E and a 1910 Otto set against a multifunction machine shop with the original Ford sign. For the 1920s, cars presented include a 1923 Nash, 1924 REO Funeral Hearse, 1925 Stearns-Knight, 1925 Model T Speedster, 1926 Wills St. Clair and a 1928 Pierce-Arrow Limousine. Around these are placed murals of downtown Hershey in the 1920s by Pennsylvania’s David Naydock. For the 1930s, Art Deco-era Miami Beach is the scene, with classics such as a 1930 Cord L-29 Convertible, a 1930 DuPont Model G, 1935 Brewster, 1936 Packard 120B Convertible, 1938 Lincoln Series K. Brunn, 1939 Studebaker President four-door and a 1938 Autocar 1200-gallon fuel tanker. And, for the powerful 1960s, with John Steinbeck’s “mother road,” Route 66, as the theme, a 1969 AMC AMX muscle car represents the last of the independents, a 1968 Cadillac El Dorado American sheer enormousness –– and a 1966 Plymouth Fury II police car to nab both of them exceeding the posted speed. License and registration, please. Car Cruisin’ the Decades Here’s a sampling of some of the cars: •1895–1896 Benton Harbor –– The very first vehicle donated to the collection, in 1995, this is also its oldest, built by the Baushke brothers of Benton Harbor, Michigan, carriage builders, with the engine supplied by William O. Worth, who later founded Chicago Motor Vehicle Co. Donated in 1995 by David Kolzow, the Benton Harbor was constructed to participate in the 1895–96 Chicago Times-

Herald “Motocycle Competition,” an early American car race. Winter prevented this. This is also believed to be the very first vehicle in America scratch built as an automobile rather than being a modified horse-drawn carriage. It may also be the first car built in Michigan. In 2014, it took part in the first-ever automotive heritage celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., which has since become an annual spring event highlighting significant automobiles, organized and presented by the Historic Vehicle Association (HVA), founded in 2009 to promote the cultural and historical significance of the automobile. In October 2017, it became No. 20 of the National Historic Register in a ceremony conducted by the HVA. •1948 Tucker #1026 –– The AACA Museum, Inc. became the home of the Cammack Tucker Collection in 2015, which is now displayed in a 5,200-square-foot gallery dedicated to the memory of Preston Tucker, celebrated in Francis Ford Coppola's 1988 film, Tucker: The Man and His Dream. The three 1948 vehicles include Tucker #1001, the first “production” prototype, Tucker #1022, and this one, the only surviving Tucker built with an automatic transmission, TuckerMatic. A total of 51 Tuckers were built by hand in Chicago, of which 47 are known to still exist. The collection also includes a factory Tucker test chassis, thousands of engineering drawings and blueprints, original Tucker parts, several engines as well as many other artifacts and displays. Because of the automatic, the drive train was extended and the rear fuel tank moved to the front, where it stayed until the end of the car’s production. The six-cylinder, 334.1 –cubicinch horizontally-opposed engine produced 166 horses. Beginning with this car, Tucker provided a modified rubber torsion tube, which continued until the end of production. And #1026 also used a new cable system for the signature Volume XVI, Number 04
“Cyclops” light. In 1950, a Tucker did 131 mph at Bonneville in Utah. More recently, this car and the factory test chassis visited the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Tucker. •1935 White Sedan: Custom 703 –– Produced by the White Motor Company of Cleveland, Ohio, the six-cylinder 77-horsepower sedan was owned by Dr. Louisa Tingley, a prominent Boston ophthalmologist and member of the company’s board of directors. In 1918, although White had stopped making cars, a custom-built automobile was made for her. When that car needed replacement in 1935, she “convinced” White to build one more. This extraordinary vehicle combines a three-quarter-ton White truck chassis and a cut-down Yellowstone Park bus body from the Bender Body Company, Bliemeister explains. “The doctor used this massive sedan until her death in 1952. This car is unrestored. It still has its original paint, interior and drivetrain.” •1945 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle –– William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson’s “Harley,” built in their home city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the “American Motorcycle.” During the 119 years of production, the company has produced them for the military law enforcement and the general public. This one was used as a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle, documented by the department as the only remaining 1945 model. CHP bought it new for $185. •1970 Chevelle LS6 –– Debuted in 1964, the Chevelle became successful with American drivers both as a downsized family coupe, sedan or station wagon as well as with performance-minded drivers for its beauty and engine options. The top of the pack 450-horsepower version was only

available as the LS6 option; Chevrolet produced 4,475, and they carry premium prices at auctions and private sales. This one was restored by students at Penn College in nearby Williamsport, Pennsylvania. In May 1970, Hot Rod Magazine said of the new legendary Chevelle muscle car, one of few contemporary vehicles capable of sub-14-second quarters right out of the showroom: “Earth Mover: The past is gone.” •1967 Ford Econoline Conversionvan, “H.M.S. Truckie” –– Donated by Luther John Deutsch of New Hampshire, this is considered one of the pioneers of the custom van movement. The work was done by Fred Marshall, owner of Marshall Vans in nearby Carlisle, using a 1967 Econoline with the 200-cubic-inch 84-horsepower engine. “Truckie” features a hand-painted wrap-around seascape mural and with amber fog lights replacing headlights, which made night-time driving a challenge. All the chrome and stainless steel and the wheels have been painted gold. The oak bumper is wood as are the interior walls, floor and ceiling. Volume XVI, Number 04
The nautical decor follows a “captain’s theme,” with the engine hidden as buried treasure in the wooden chest doubling as a center console. Inside is an ice box, bar, television and double bed. Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach Auction 17 is Largest Ever written by David M. Brown The 17th Annual Palm Beach Auction in April marked the Scottsdale-based company’s largest three-day Florida event, posting 632 vehicles for $30-plus million –– an impressive 98.9-percent sell-through-rate.

Resto-Mods remain in high demand, including the auction leader, a 1947 Buick Super 8 Custom Convertible (Lot #735), which brought $412,500. Other cars in the top 10 were three Chevys: a 1957 Bel Air Custom Hardtop (#731), $286,000; 1964 Corvette Custom Coupe (#734), $275,000; and a 1970 Chevelle Custom Convertible (#730), $253,000.
