HPU Theatre Presents: Waiting for Godot Thursday, August 15 - Saturday, August 17 at 7:30 pm; and Sunday, August 18 at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 23 – Saturday, August 24 at 7:30 pm; and Sunday, August 25 at 2:00 pm Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Open to the Public Written by Samuel Beckett Waiting for Godot is an absurdist play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, wait endlessly and in vain for the arrival of someone named Godot, whom they only know by reputation. To occupy the time, they philosophize, sleep, argue, sing, exercise, swap hats, and consider suicide – anything “to hold the terrible silence at bay.” Godot’s absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, has led to many different interpretations since the play’s premiere. It was voted “the most significant English language play of the 20th century”. Dear World Live is an interactive, award winning event that explores the subtle and powerful connections that students, faculty and staff have on colleges across the country. Robert X. Fogarty has been invited to our campus to photograph students, faculty, and staff, and culminates with a participatory and emotionally stimulating event where he will share portraits that will make you smile, cry, and laugh out loud.

The HPU dance minor program presents an evening of professional dance works by HPU dance faculty. Cara Hagan, Director of the dance minor program, Lindsey Howie (Theatre/Dance minor) and Melissa Pihos (PE) will perform contemporary dance works that speak to a broad range of styles and themes. Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grants The Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grants assist HPU faculty in planning vibrant, intellectually-stimulating cultural events that feature nationally-renowned academics, artists, and performers. The Grants support programming in all academic disciplines and help introduce students to the best ideas in art, literature, science, philosophy, and business. The theme for this year’s Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grants is Diversity: Living in Community. Diversity is a core value at High Point University, and speaks to academic freedom, inclusivity, and community within and beyond campus.
Drumming Up Diversity: West African Dancing and Drumming Thursday, September 12 at 5:30 pm David R. Hayworth Park, Hoffman Amphitheatre Rain Location: Conference Center Ballroom Open to the Public, No Tickets Required
Join in as the Amphitheatre comes alive with West African dancing and drumming. This hands-on teaching event will give students the opportunity to learn Malinke rhythms, dances, and call-and-response singing. Students will also learn the religious belief systems and the cultural history of the rhythms they are learning. Drums and other instruments will be provided, no experience is necessary, and everyone is invited.

Daniela Cepeda Tarud is the 2013 Queen of the Carnival in Barranquilla, Colombia. She is the representative of a city which, in its bicentennial year, has been honored as the 2013 American Capital of Culture in Latin America. Her lecture and performance will focus on the music, folklore, customs, and culture of the Caribbean Carnival.
Phoenix Reading Series: Juan Alvarez Thursday, September 26 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Open to the Public, No Tickets Required
Juan Alvarez is one of Columbia’s most promising young fiction writers. His debut story collection Falsas Alarmas has been awarded Columbia’s National Story Award for “City of Bogota.” He has since published a novel, interviews, non-fiction, vignettes, essays and translations in magazines such as Numero, El Malpensante, Etiqueta Negra, DonJuan, and many more. Currently, he co-edits the literary magazine El Perro, and is a member of the Urtak Team at Urtak.com. He has a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from the Universidad de los Andes, a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Texas, and is currently a doctoral candidate at Columbia University in the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures. Gregory Flaxman is a film scholar and an associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Flaxman’s widely published scholarship includes the books Gilles Deleuze and the Fabulation of Philosophy: Powers of the False, Volume 1, and The Brain Is the Screen: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Cinema. There will be a brief question and answer session following the lecture.
Phoenix Reading Series: Terry Kennedy and Drew Perry Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Open to the Public, No Tickets Required
Terry L. Kennedy is the author of the book of poetry New River Breakdown, and the chapbook, Until the Clouds Shatter the Light That Plates Our Lives. He teaches at UNC Greensboro where he is the Associate Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing. He is the editor of the online journal, storySouth, and the associate editor of the Greensboro Review. Drew Perry’s widely praised first novel, This Is Just Exactly Like You, was released by Viking in 2010. His second novel, Kids These Days, is due from Algonquin in January 2014. He has published fiction in Willow Springs, Black Warrior Review, Atlanta Magazine, Alaska Quarterly Review, and New Stories from the South, among other places. He is an assistant professor of English at Elon University.

Dr. Brian Meixner, HPU Assistant Professor of Music, presents a concert celebrating the release of Praxis, his compact disc recording of music for euphonium and percussion. Dr. Meixner, playing the euphonium, is joined by HPU faculty percussionists Dr. Nathan Daughtrey and Dr. Danny Frye, as well as the Gate City Percussion. The performance features music from the new album with contemporary and exciting new compositions for this fascinating combination of instruments.

Tim has managed to develop his own unique style that focuses on making the most of negative space. His high energy show combines music, art, humor, and audience participation to create a performance that event-goers will talk about long after viewing. “Truth in Fiction: How reading (and writing) fiction can offer answers to questions with which other philosophical forms struggle.” Jacob Paul will discuss how poetics in general, and fiction in particular, offers unique opportunities for inquiry by modeling conflict rather than testing, and proving, theses. His lecture will draw on his novel, Sarah/Sara, which is the story of a young woman kayaking the arctic to make sense of her parents’ death during a terrorist attack, as well as a range of other texts written in response to trauma and paradox.

It was Britney Gengel’s compassion for others that brought her to Haiti, just a day before a catastrophic earthquake that claimed an estimated 230,000 lives rocked the small, poverty stricken country. In Britney’s memory, her family has established the organization whose mission is to serve the children of Haiti by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where they can grow, learn & thrive. As parents of a current HPU student, the Gengels are proud to take part in High Point University’s Family Weekend.

HPU welcomes two esteemed theologians, Dr. M. Shawn Copeland, of Boston College, and Dr. Willie Jennings, of Duke Divinity School, for lecture and conversation. Empty Space Theatre Open to the Public By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett The Diary of Anne Frank is a stage adaptation of the book The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. From 1942 to 1944, in a Nazi occupied Amsterdam, the thirteen year old German Jewish girl, Anne Frank, lives hiding in an attic of a condiment factory with her sister, her parents, three members of another family and an old dentist. Along more than two years, she wrote in her diary, her feelings, her fears and relationship with the other dwellers. They embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell – swindling, lying, and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
Sechrest Art Gallery: Merry Moor Winnett: A Photographic Personal Perspective Monday-Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Call 336-841-4685 for more information) Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Sechrest Art Gallery Open to the Public, No Tickets Required November 11 – December 4 Merry Moor Winnett (1951-1994) moved to North Carolina in the late 1970s and quickly established herself as the queen of experimental photography known for infrared, hand painted, toned, stitched, composite-printed images of seemingly endless innovation. She used literature including mythology, science fiction, poetry and popular culture as well as her own life experiences to produce photographic passions. Whimsical and complex images were predominant in her early career while the later years were mixed between the tragedy of cancer and the exuberance of life.

Phoenix Festival: Nathaniel Mackey
Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 pm Phillips Hall, Francis Auditorium Open to the Public, No Tickets Required Nathaniel Mackey is an American poet, novelist, literary critic, editor and jazz aficionado. He is currently the Reynolds Price Professor of English at Duke. Mr. Mackey is a National Book Award winner for poetry, Chancellor of the Academy of American Poetry for six years, and a winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, among other honors. As a tribute to High Point’s jazz heritage, members of the HPU Jazz Ensemble will also be playing at this year’s annual Phoenix Festival.
Thanksgiving Message: Justin Constantine Monday, November 25 at 7:30 pm
Hayworth Fine Arts Center, Pauline Theatre Volunteering for his deployment to Iraq in 2006, Justin Constantine was excited to lead other Marines and help rebuild that war-torn part of the world. Little did he know that he would come inches from losing his life. While on a routine combat patrol, an enemy sniper shot Justin in the head, causing catastrophic damage along the way and destroying his jaws and much of his face. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a young Navy Corpsman, as well as his own warrior spirit, Justin is still alive today. Justin’s personal awards from his time in Iraq include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Justin speaks about the value of a positive attitude, teamwork and community values in overcoming adversity, and he now serves as a mentor to young students in his local community. Our annual Holiday Choral Concert has become a popular event for the High Point community and this year will be the most exciting to date! The concert will be a festive evening of beloved holiday music. A full orchestra made up of students, faculty, and guests will accompany this concert.
Each year during the holidays, the North Carolina Symphony performs Holiday Pops, a festive tradition that is a favorite with audiences around the state! Founded by Lamar Stringfield in 1932, the North Carolina Symphony is a full-time, professional orchestra with 65 members under the artistic leadership of Music Director Grant Llewellyn.

Hayworth Chapel Open to the Public, No Tickets Required This special candlelight service will feature members of the university community, the Chapel Choir and the Flute Ensemble. The Board of Stewards, Alpha Delta Theta sorority and Alpha Phi Omega fraternity will serve as ushers and greeters. The service is based on the traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols at King’s College, Cambridge, England.
