High Point University CLASS OF 2029

I want to congratulate you on your acceptance into my home away from home, High Point University! Our university has given me the best years of my life. Today, I am practicing sports medicine as a primary care sports medicine fellow in Utah, thanks to how HPU profoundly influenced my development and that of my peers.

From leadership and academic achievement to social engagement, I have truly transformed. At HPU, I conducted undergraduate research alongside my chemistry professor, presented that research at professional conferences, interned at the National Institutes of Health and played soccer. I credit so much of my success to the individual attention you receive from professors in HPU’s small class sizes.

High Point University attracts a certain type of student — one who wants to grow not only academically but also personally and socially. By living in this inspiring environment, we become kinder, friendlier and lead a more purposeful life. When I graduated, I left with all of the tools I needed for medical school and also with the attributes to be a good friend, steward and global citizen.

The culture of caring is what led me to choose HPU. There are endless resources on campus that enable students to excel academically and personally, including: peer mentors, Student Success Coaches, career and professional development services, peer tutoring and more! High Point University has a pristine campus and beautiful facilities, but the staff mentors who greet you every day with a smile and the professors who spend their personal time ensuring that you succeed academically are what truly make HPU great.

Everyone is willing to go the extra mile to help us develop the quality Life Skills needed to achieve a life of success and significance. High Point University has a true sense of “we are in this together,” which makes this campus especially unique. Simple things like having lunch with friends, professors, staff members or even with President Qubein are what set this place apart!

I could spend hours writing about how highly I think of my school. While graduation was bittersweet, I couldn’t have wished for a better undergraduate experience. I had truly amazing opportunities that I know would not have been offered by any other institution. High Point University prepared me far beyond what I could have imagined. Come join the HPU family!

HPU knows you want a college experience that includes stellar classes and professors, along with opportunities to build lifelong friendships, pursue passions and hobbies, stay fit, join a club or a team, and make memories that will last a lifetime!

These pages showcase just a glimpse of the FUN you’ll have at HPU.

Student Life

Live Here. Love it Here.

You deserve to love where you live. That starts with your residence hall. Picture this: You just pulled up to your first college dorm with mom and dad. You’re leaving your home, friends and family for the first time. You aren’t just carrying plastic bins that are way too heavy from the car to your room. You’re carrying loads of anxiety, too.

Do you want to be greeted by a stuffy old dorm room that adds to that stress? NO WAY! Your residence hall is where you’ll be living. Your home away from home. At HPU, we understand your environment should reflect the incredible educational journey you’re embarking on.

Not only are HPU upperclassmen, staff and faculty on hand to unload ALL of your belongings for you and take them into your dorm room, but you’re also greeted with nationally ranked dorms. HPU knows you rise to the level of the environment in which you live.

Meet Your New Squad

You’ve spent your entire life at home, but now you’re deciding where you’re going to live for the next four years as a college student.

Think about this: There are 168 hours in a week. You’ll be in class approximately 20 of those. You’ll be dedicating the rest of your time to joining organizations on campus, conducting undergraduate research, cheering on the HPU Panthers award-winning basketball team, growing through experiential learning opportunities and making friends you’ll keep for the rest of your life.

Find Your Rhythm

There’s no better feeling than standing in a crowd and singing along to your favorite artist. Imagine that moment, but in a more intimate setting surrounded by your closest friends. That’s what you’ll find here at HPU. Our fall and spring concerts feature major artists, like T-Pain, Lee Brice, Jesse McCartney, DNCE, Daya, Cheat Codes, J. Cole, Chris Lane and many others you know and love. And students have the opportunity to meet them.

Slay Your Workout

Regardless of how you prefer to get your sweat on, we’ve got you covered. With options to continue your favorite sport, pursue a new one, work out in a group setting or on your own, there is something for everyone at HPU.

HPU Rec offers an array of classes — ranging from the ever-popular yoga, spinning and Zumba to the latest cutting-edge fitness workouts and trends —  in addition to a five-week boot camp taught by a local fitness professional. Inside Panther Commons, HPU’s newest residence hall, are the Powerhouse, a workout studio dedicated to weightlifting, and the Wheelhouse, a spin studio with regular spin classes offered to students.

Leisure activities include bocce ball, corn hole, ladder golf, bicycles, trikkes, a tandem bike and the HPU ropes course.

• 17 Division I athletic teams

• 35 club sports

• 300 intramural teams

• Two major student centers

• Ten fitness facilities

• Six outdoor pools, five Jacuzzi hot tubs and an indoor pool

• Two indoor multipurpose courts

• Three outdoor basketball courts

• Four beach volleyball courts

• Six lighted tennis courts

• Indoor track

• Three intramural fields with stadium lighting and professional grade turf

HPU graduates don’t live in their parent’s basement. In fact, 99% are employed or in graduate school withing 180 days of earning their HPU degree, outperforming the national average by 14 points.

Intensely focused on Life Skills, HPU graduates enter the workforce with the characteristics employers want. Top companies, such as Amazon and Google, recognize that Life Skills are the most valuable traits of their workforce.

“Both professors and courses in my undergraduate and graduate school experience at HPU gave me a strong foundation in media, business and television. My professors taught me how to work with a team, manage deadlines and handle different aspects of production. It was a valuable experience that prepared me for my job at Fox Business Network. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me with my resume and helped me land my first internship at FBN, which ultimately helped me land the full-time role I have today.”

RACHEL DEODATO, ’24

“HPU prepared me for the future by allowing me to hone my critical thinking skills, fostering independence and providing a platform for personal growth. Through rigorous academic challenges, I learned to analyze information, solve problems and adapt to situations that have prepared me for the world as it will be. Additionally, college exposed me to a variety of perspectives and experiences, helping me navigate the intricacies of the world beyond academia.”

“HPU provided me with the resources, experiences and skills I needed to begin my career. I was able to gain experiential learning through HPU’s state-of-the-art TV studio, where I helped produce several weekly shows and long-form specials. I used the Office of Career and Professional Development during my first few weeks as a freshman, and I went on the HPU in the City trip in New York City shortly after. The relationships that I built in the career office and on that trip are the reason why I was able to craft a stellar resume and cover letter and have the skills needed to ace an interview.”

“Because of HPU’s small class sizes, I made strong personal connections with my professors and classmates. This helped me identify my passion for supply chain management. The staff in the Office of Career and Professional Development helped me explore various career routes and learn more about different industries. HPU taught me to never give up. I learned how to be adaptable and coachable. Through interactive experiences like simulations and presentations in my classes, High Point University prepared me for my future.”

Student Success Coaches

At HPU, coaching for students begins before they arrive to campus. Each freshman is connected to a Success Coach, a professional staff member who offers guidance, wise counsel and encouragement, as soon as they enroll at HPU.

Further coaching is seen in the mentorship students receive from faculty and staff members. HPU students benefit from an ecosystem of mentorship and support. From career advisors to faculty advisors, peer mentors and even club sports (which have their own professional coaches), there is no shortage of opportunities for constructive feedback.

No one in life gets far without the help of others. HPU understands this. That’s why the university has forged a culture where students are surrounded by coaches who care.

An HPU Success Coach is your guide through your transitional journey into college life. Here’s a glimpse at the important roles a Success Coach will play throughout your freshman year at HPU.

LIFE COACH:

When incoming freshmen arrive on campus, they experience a variety of emotions. Because it’s often their first time living away from home, students feel the need to quickly find their place at HPU. Success Coaches answer that call. Your Success Coach will encourage you to find your own niche on campus, as well as ways that you can apply and pursue your passions.

UNIVERSITY LIAISON:

A Success Coach will help you make connections with faculty and staff on campus. They can refer you to Career Services, Student Life, Counseling Services, Financial Aid and other offices on campus to ensure that you receive the support and encouragement you need.

ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR:

A Success Coach will assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal and social/emotional success. They will encourage you to get involved in clubs, intramural sports or other campus activities as a means of staying engaged beginning your first year.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR:

Success Coaches meet with each freshman at Orientation to review their fall course schedule. Success Coaches also guide students in choosing classes for the spring semester and fall of sophomore year.

Your Class With the Nation’s Most Inspiring College President

At HPU, your foundation begins early for Life Skills, or what the business world sometimes calls “soft skills” — the ability to communicate with different people, present ideas clearly, work in a team, be coachable, be adaptable, problem solve and persevere.

Nowhere else will you take a first-year seminar for all freshmen, much less one led by a college president who’s launched businesses and acted as a consultant. All freshmen benefit from the fun and useful First-Year Seminar on Life Skills, led by HPU President Nido Qubein and featuring special, accomplished guests.

The weekly seminar focuses on topics such as fiscal literacy, persuasive speaking, the art of negotiating and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses the “rule of thirds” — investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving. If you can gain the level of Life Skills in college that would otherwise take years of experience to amass in the real world, you will stand out.

BONUS: This course also includes guest sessions led by global leaders in HPU’s unique Access to Innovators program. Students will get to learn from industry titans such as the co-founders of Apple and Netflix, the CEOs of Domino’s, the Dallas Mavericks and MyEyeDr., the former director of NBC’s “The Today Show” and many others!

All freshmen benefit from the First-Year Seminar on Life Skills, led by HPU President Nido Qubein and global leaders who are his friends.

Life Skills Learning Labs

Our investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline — we are committed to equipping students with the Life Skills necessary to be successful in their career and in life’s daily interactions.

HPU’s campus is filled with real-world facilities that further instill Life Skills. For example, 1924 PRIME, Alo and Kazoku, three fine-dining restaurants, allow HPU students to build confidence in professional settings beyond the office and gain international cuisine and culture experience. We use many other common exchanges and interactions to teach the art of persuasion, effective communication and other skills that help HPU students stand out.

While some universities provide an etiquette class during a student’s senior year, HPU provides students with four years of career preparation inside three different fine-dining restaurants. 1924 PRIME, HPU’s flagship restaurant, Alo, HPU’s boutique hotel restaurant, and Kazoku, HPU’s family-style teppanayaki experience, provide the perfect atmosphere for students to engage in a unique type of learning laboratory.

At 1924 PRIME, students practice their interview skills in a setting where they can develop confidence while at the same time gaining familiarity with international cuisine and culture. Similarly at Alo, students practice interviewing, focus on continental dining style and learn to be comfortable with European dining etiquette and protocol. At Kazoku, students are able to build confidence in professional settings beyond the office and gain international cuisine and culture experience. Students dine at one of these fine-dining locations once per week, which is included in the HPU dining plan.

When HPU graduates enter the workforce, they not only know how to ace the interview, but they’re also comfortable and confident in various business settings. This prepares them for a lifetime of success. Just picture it: after you accept the job offer, your boss asks you to take an international client to dinner. Or you’re meeting colleagues after work to offer a major proposal.

Accelerated Access to Research

At HPU, students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year.

While many universities reserve research opportunities for upperclassmen or graduate students, HPU students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year. Employers want graduates who can communicate well, be resilient and problem solve. Those are the foundational skills of conducting research. HPU provides research opportunities for students in every major, from being coached by a faculty researcher on campus to landing impressive research experiences for undergraduates (commonly called REUs) through institutions such as the National Science Foundation, Duke University, the American Institute of Physics, Columbia University and others.

The High Point University Research Rookies Program works to incorporate students into the university’s culture of research and creative work, early in their undergraduate careers. The program is designed to create a community of undergraduate scholars and help build research-related skills to prepare students for faculty collaborative scholarship that makes an original contribution to one’s field. Getting involved in research or creative works in college helps students build unique credentials to distinguish themselves from among the two million other students they will graduate among and compete with for jobs or entrance into graduate and professional schools!

Access to an All-Star Alumni Network

From Google and Amazon to NBC, Rolling Stone Magazine, Coca-Cola and more, HPU alumni forge careers at top-tier global companies and then commit to regular campus visits where they mentor current students, give valuable career advice and discuss career opportunities within their companies.

Access to such alumni is part of why 99% of HPU graduates begin their career or continue their education within 180 days of graduation.

Values-Based Living and Learning

You’ll first notice it when you drive onto campus.

A security officer smiling to greet you. A professor stooping down to pick up a stray piece of trash along the Kester International Promenade. The President of HPU waving as you walk to class. A student holding the door for you.

Those gestures happen every day on the campus of High Point University. While seemingly insignificant, they make a big impact.

Many schools forget that the most important aspect of your life is the values on which you stand. HPU’s campus is designed to inspire and we proudly celebrate faith, gratitude, patriotism, generosity, civility and more. As HPU President Nido Qubein often reminds faculty and staff, “You can’t teach values. Instead, we must model a values-based approach to life. Students watch, they listen and they learn.”

Faculty and staff model the values of service, joy, generosity, gratitude and respect because they know that students are paying attention to the actions of those around them.

500,000 hours of service. the hpu family annually contributes

When students are surrounded by people who have a positive attitude, they begin to understand that nothing is impossible for the individual who is willing to work hard enough and smart enough.

And when students graduate and pursue professional careers, they go on to lead lives of success but also lives of significance.
