Like many other companies in our industry we are looking to hire. Fortunately our people are able to telecommute. HP’s editors are in Florida, our account execs are in Pembroke, Mass and L.A., California, our art director is in Wolfboro N.H., and we print in Hanover, Mass. We meet over Skype and message quick questions and answers. There are lots of comparisons between office work and telecommuting. It’s not for everyone. The most notable advantage for HP is that telecommuting enjoys sizeable reductions in overhead.

Integrated Breaks Ground at 2 Wells

Two Wells Ave rendering

Newton, MA – Integrated Builders of Rockland announced that it has broken ground on a 105,000sf office expansion at Two Wells Avenue in Newton on behalf of owner Two Wells Avenue, LLC. The new three-story addition will require extensive demolition on the north and west portions of the existing facility and will ultimately increase the building’s total size from 69,000sf to 127,000sf. Currently, Two Wells Avenue is a 69,000sf, single-story, steel-framed building that was completed in the 1970s. Integrated Builders will utilize selective demolition of the facility to preserve 27,000sf of existing space on the west side, where the new 105,000sf addition will be attached. The updated facility will boast a modern design with a glass exterior, an expanded parking lot, new utilities, and an underground stormwater infiltration

system. Additionally, a 3,162sf common corridor will be installed to connect the new and existing building areas to one another. The project team will provide construction management and contracting services and will be led by project manager Brian Kidder, superintendent Craig Ablondi, and assistant project manager Barbara Frazier. Spagnolo Gisness & Associates, Inc., will provide architecture and planning services. The project is expected to be completed in December 2016. “Two Wells Avenue has great bones, and we are excited to not only double the size of the building, but also preserve a portion of the existing space which holds a great amount of history,” said Jay Dacey, president of Integrated Builders.

How AEC Firms Can Use Google Analytics to Quantify Marketing and PR ROI

by Susan Shelby

Google Analytics is a free tool that collects data about a business’ website and online activities and interprets that data to provide information about the business’ audiences, customers, and website visitors. When AEC firms regularly use this data, they can better understand their clients’ preferences and interests, measure and track leads, and improve their marketing and PR to more effectively reach their ideal clients. While other analytics tools exist, Google Analytics is widely accepted as the market leader, as it’s the ideal choice for firms that are just dipping their toes into the analytics waters. What can Google Analytics do for AEC Firms?

While there are extensive layers to the data that Google Analytics can provide — data that can be explored as a user gains comfort using the tool — there are several basic and useful statistics that every AEC

firm can benefit from. These are: site visits; page views; bounce rate; average time on site; pages per visit; percentage of new visits (versus return visits from people who have visited your site in the past); referral traffic (this identifies the websites that send visitors to your firm’s site, including search engines, websites, and marketing campaigns, like banner advertising, email marketing, and payper-click ads); and keywords report (the search engine terms that deliver traffic to your firm’s website). By tracking this data on a regular basis, firms will begin to see how marketing and PR activities affect the data over time and eventually can use this information to increase website traffic, improve search engine rankings, understand where new project leads are coming from, and learn what kind of content is most useful to their target audiences. Getting Started: How Do You Set Up Google Analytics?

If your website does not already have Google Analytics installed, it can easily be added to any existing site by inserting a short piece of HTML code (which is provided on the Google Analytics website) onto each website page. If you don’t have immediate access to the back end of your website to insert the tracking code, you

should ask your website administrator to do it for you. Once this code is applied, Google Analytics will begin tracking data on your website. The Secret Sauce of Google Analytics: Automated Reporting

Once your account has been set up, you can identify what kinds of data reports will be most useful for your business. There are a wide variety of standard reports that users can have automatically emailed to them — on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Weekly reports typically offer the best view into changing data trends over time, without becoming overwhelmingly frequent. When a firm is just starting out using Google Analytics, there are several basic, useful reports that will help track and manage marketing and PR efforts. These are: • Visitor Overview. This provides a

snapshot of your website, including total visits, unique visitors, pages per visit, average time on the site, and bounce rate. Tip: Watch your site’s visitor metrics for major dips and

peaks, so you can identify the causes behind them. • Sources. Where your website visitors

are coming from (also called “referral traffic”). Tip: If there are websites or publications that are regular sources of new or return visitors, you may want to consider targeting those sites for more PR content or partnerships.

• Engagement. These statistics identify

how well visitors are engaging with your website, and typically include bounce rate, average time on site, and average pages viewed per visit. Tip: The number of clicks and positions should be constantly going up.

• Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Top Keywords. This identifies the

words and phrases that search engines have associated with your content and used to find your site.

Make the Most of All That Data

To translate the details of website analytics into valuable business information that firm leadership will understand and care about, it can help to create a brief continued to page 29

MathCounts for Future Engineers

Editor’s note: Reprinted from DiPrete Engineering’s newsletter posted on April 19, 2016 DiPrete Engineering is pleased to participate in this year’s MathCounts competition, a middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that supports the next generation of engineers. The MathCounts competition consists of students from 28 local middle and junior high schools who compete in four rounds of math problem-solving questions to earn a spot at the Raytheon MathCounts National Competition in Washington, D.C. Over the years, DiPrete has participated in the coordination and scoring of the competition. In 2014, Eric Prive, project manager at DiPrete,

traveled to Walt Disney World to handle the official scoring at the National Competition. This year, he has taken on the role of sssistant state coordinator for Rhode Island and will be proctoring the competition alongside DiPrete Vice President Chris Duhamel. “MathCounts is a great way to get students excited about math and its related fields through friendly competition,” said Duhamel. “By participating in MathCounts, we can show Rhode Island students that their current achievements can lead to a successful future in engineering,” added Prive. “It’s great to see the passion these kids hold toward math and its related fields, and we are honored to be a part of this annual competition.”

In December 2015, Daniel Marr & Son (DM&S) began work for steel fabricator Suncor/National Metals as part of the Terminal E Renovations and Enhancements Project at Boston’s Logan Airport. By way of a partnership with general contractor Suffolk Construction and Massport Capitol Programs, the project consists of approximately 110,000 sf of new construction and 150,000 sf of renovation to the international terminal. The upgrades will allow for the accommodation of the world’s largest passenger jet, the Airbus A380 Group VI aircraft, and improve overall passenger experience. The scope of DM&S’ work includes the steel erection of the new expansion, and renovations to part of the existing Terminal E structure. Working with 1,460 tons of steel, DM&S erected the new building in three phases. Phase 1 involved erecting five floors of steel from one crane location that had limited space to store material or equipment. Phase 2, the middle portion of the addition, called for an extensive amount of cantilevers that required temporary shoring to erect. Utilizing a Manitowoc 2250 Crawler Crane, DM&S

erected Phase 2 from multiple locations due to FAA limitations on the tip height of the crane. In addition, work over the “tug path,” an active drive lane used by cars to transport luggage from the planes, had to be carefully scheduled and sequenced to avoid interruptions to the daily operations of the airport. Phase 3 was erected using Marr Crane and Rigging’s 110-ton Grove. Also on site were Marr Crane & Rigging’s 90-ton crane and Marr Scaffolding Company lifts and shoring towers. Daniel Marr & Son recently celebrated the topping off on April 1. Currently, work continues in the existing terminal renovation phase, and DM&S is expected to conclude in the spring of 2016. Katherine Marr is communications coordinator at The Marr Companies in Boston, Mass.

NECTF Hosts Career Connections Millbury, MA – The New England Carpenters Training Fund (NECTF) hosted its first Career Connections Conference recently to increase awareness of the curriculum developed by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) for high school and pre-apprenticeship carpentry programs. The conference was held at the central training facility for the New England Regional Council of Carpenters in Millbury. There are already 14 schools in Massachusetts that use the Career Connections curriculum, with four others preparing to purchase the book series. The Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF) created the program when leadership of the UBC saw the need to provide young people with the knowledge and skills needed to choose wisely and prepare for advanced training in a registered apprenticeship program. One component of the curriculum is “One Trade, Many Careers,” which focuses on skills that research shows employers value most: goal setting, good attitude, punctuality, teamwork, and taking initiative. It also introduces students to the typical construction job site. Other components are basic and intermediate carpentry skills, residential construction, safety, blueprint reading, and math review.

The Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF) created the program when leadership of the UBC saw the need to provide young people with the knowledge and skills needed to choose wisely and prepare for advanced training in a registered apprenticeship program. A major feature of Career Connections is teacher support. Lessons are accompanied by a Teacher Annotated Edition with rubrics for each project, grading guides, a safety operation checklist, a skills matrix, and estimated lesson times. Completing the four-year Career Connections curriculum provides graduates with a jumpstart into careers as professional union carpenters. Graduates receive advanced placement at UBC Pre-Apprenticeship and/or Apprenticeship Programs. NECTF is receiving tremendous feedback on the program. The Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA) is expected to be present at the June conference, and events similar to the Millbury conference are being planned at different locations throughout the region.

Towers|Golde Receives 2016 CT ASLA Award

Phoenix Plaza

Hartford, CT – Towers|Golde is the recipient of the 2016 CT ASLA Award of Excellence for The Phoenix Plaza. The landscape architects were the lead designer for all plaza improvements including concrete pavers, precast concrete walls/curbs, metal barriers, planting, light fixture selection, and grading. While respecting this historic building

and its midcentury aesthetic, the main charge for the designers was to reduce paving, facilitate circulation, integrate with the scale of the building, while humanizing the scale at the level of the pedestrian. In the new design, the primary circulation through the plaza was maintained and pedestrian boulevards created. The remainder of the site was planted with a

mix of plants that thrive in exposed, dry conditions. Half of the plaza paving was turned into planted areas, which resulted in reduced installation costs. The building, which was renovated and received LEED Silver certification in 2010, now has a more appropriate and sustainable setting. The plaza has been modernized for today’s requirements while remaining true

to its midcentury roots. Planting plays a significant role in providing continuity and enclosure as well as environmental benefits. History Still Flows at the New Goffe Mill Plaza

by Robert Duval

The historic Goffe Mill site (also known as the former Wayfarer Inn site) in Bedford, N.H., is undergoing a unique and lively revitalization. The site occupies 16.2 acres across Bowman Brook between South River Road and the FE Everett Turnpike. Originally developed in 1744 by Colonel John Goffe, who obtained the property for his service in the French and Indian Wars, the Goffe family constructed two stone dams and a mill pond, where they operated a gristmill and a sawmill for over a hundred years. In 1961, the property was sold to developers of upscale hotels who opened the Sheraton Wayfarer Hotel and Conference Center in 1962, which became famous over the years for the politicians who stopped there while campaigning during New Hampshire’s presidential primaries. The property was sold in 1986 and was closed by the current owners in 2010. On April 8 the new Goffe Mill Plaza, a

mixed-use village-style development anchored by a 40,000sf Whole Foods Market, officially opened at the site. It was a widely anticipated opening with hundreds of shoppers enjoying the new site. A month prior, The Provident Bank, also part of Goffe Mill Plaza, opened for business. TFMoran, a local full-service engineering and landscape architecture firm, was hired by the current owners to redesign the property to include a grocery store, retail space, two restaurants, a bank, and an apartment building. The historic mill building, brook, and dams were to

be incorporated as a central part of the development. “Due to its long history and unique setting, the project imposed numerous challenges for the developers,” says Jeff Kevan, project principal for TFMoran. “We had to put together a plan that, in addition to providing access and parking for each use within the complex, also addressed the environmental quality of Bowman Brook, traffic safety, preservation of the historic mill, and structural stability of the bridges and dams, and created an accessible public walking trail all around the brook and mill pond,” he explained. The town of Bedford and the community came together in support of

this project. In addition to the revitalization of this historic site, the benefits were numerous, adding new jobs, bringing more visitors to the area, encouraging even more economic development, and adding public green space. “The community green space consists of a half-mile-long loop path designed around the historical Goffe’s Mill site which connects the future residential component of the development with the commercial, making this site a living walking community,” explains Mike Krzeminski, TFMoran’s landscape architect. “The path was designed to patios with granite benches in locations to overlook the Goffe’s Mill dams and

Landscape architects create spaces for all types of clientele to add greenery, stone, structure, walkways, and much more. At Gawron Turgeon Architects (GTA) in Scarborough, Maine, their landscape architects are experts in memory care gardens and exterior spaces for their healthcare and senior living clients.

Transition, changing from one space to another, is taken into careful consideration when it comes to memory care gardens. The progression of spaces from a porch to a site or shade structure and then on to an open, park-like setting is an important consideration for landscape architects to ensure residents comfortably adjust to changing light levels and feelings of safety and security. Revitalizing Watertown

Krzeminski Receives LA License

Michael Krzeminski

After construction

Editor’s note: reprinted from DiPrete Engineering’s newsletter posted on April 19, 2016 Watertown, MA – DiPrete Engineering is working in collaboration with Studio Troika, the project architect, and property owner, Mitchell Kassler of Edgewater Properties, on the revitalization of 150 Coolidge Avenue — a 26,000sf building in the heart of Watertown’s new development. DiPrete is providing civil engineering design services to enhance the existing infrastructure servicing the building — improving the pedestrian and vehicular movements — and to maximize the efficiency of the onsite parking. This one-acre property is advantageously located in close proximity to The Arsenal Project — a significant mixeduse redevelopment project.

Dudley Reclamation Site Opens W. L. French Partners With Rampco Dudley, MA – W. L. French Excavating Corporation, of North Billerica, in partnership with Rampco Construction, announced the opening of the Dudley Reclamation Project. The fill site currently has over 4 million tons of airspace/2.7 million cubic yards. The project opened in April and is located at 123 Oxford Avenue in Dudley. The project is the very first site of its kind in the state of Massachusetts operating with an Administrative Consent Order (ACO) from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, accepting both <RCS-1 and <RCS-2 soils (Reportable Concentration Standard). The Dudley Reclamation Project will help to address the large-scale disposal needs generated from the excess volume of soils from New England’s current and future large-scale construction and excavation projects. New policy and regulations in Massachusetts require fill sites that accept over 100,000 cubic yards of soil to receive an ACO from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The new MassDEP policy institutionalizes a site-specific review and approval process that has been successfully used on an ad hoc basis to expand opportunities for the reuse of excess soil excavated from devel-

opment sites. MassDEP approval of these projects insures that issues common to large-scale fill projects are appropriately addressed. French operates two of three ACO operating fill sites in Massachusetts. “This project is the largest soil disposal site in Massachusetts. The project will help to address the increasing soil disposal needs of the large construction and excavation projects generating excess volumes of soil in downtown Boston, the state of Massachusetts, and the New England region,” said Bill French Jr., president/owner at W.L. French Excavating Corp.

From large buildings such as airports, museums, hospitals, and chemical refinery plants to an entire city, this 3D surveying technique is becoming increasingly more common within the architecture, engineering, construction, heavy civil, and facility

planning industries. Portable, terrestrial scanners are noncontact 3D measurement systems digitally documenting the location of an object’s outer surface detailing as-built or as-is conditions. Brighton, MA – J. & M. Brown Company (JMB), based in Jamaica Plain, has completed the electrical fit-out of Harvard Business Publishing’s new 125,000sf headquarters’ office space at Boston Landing, 20 Guest Street in Brighton, Mass. The fast-track, four-month electrical project entailed the demolition and customized fit-out of five floors for HBP. BIM and CAD coordination were integral to the project and key factors enabling the NECA Boston contractor to meet the aggressive schedule. The office space features an open ceiling design, and JMB’s field crew installed metal clad cable high and tight into ceiling areas, maneuvering around duct work and sprinklers to hang hundreds of LED pendant lighting fixtures. Johnston, RI – Margulies Perruzzi Architects (MPA) has completed the repositioning of 338,600sf of Class A office space for Hobbs Brook Management LLC. The renovation project transformed the existing 1301 Atwood Avenue facility into a high-performance and amenityrich office building, and provides for the development of the surrounding 153 acres into the new Northwoods office park. MPA’s repositioning of 1301 Atwood consisted of a complete replacement of

the building’s exterior and the addition of 30,000sf to the building’s footprint by moving the external walls. Built in 1972, virtually all aspects of the building are now new, with the exception of the prestressed concrete beam structure. MPA used a unitized metal and glass curtain wall for the building’s envelope, providing high-thermal efficiency and allowing daylight to filter deep into the building’s interior. Expected to achieve LEED Gold certification, 1301

Atwood features new energy-efficient mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and recycled materials. The project team included general contractor Dimeo Construction; MEP engineers AHA Consulting Engineers; structural engineers Odeh Engineers, Inc.; civil and landscape engineers Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB); lighting designer HLB Lighting Design; and kitchen consultants Colburn & Guyette. Cushman & Wakefield | Hayes & Sherry is the com-

mercial broker representing the property. MPA designed the three-story building with three separate lobbies that allow for single- or multi-tenant occupancy of the building, with parking off of each access point. Each two-story entrance features abundant natural light and provides inviting and convenient access with elegant monumental stairs. Large, unobstructed floor plates look out onto the landscaped campus setting with a walking path and picturesque pond.

Retail/Hospitality New Whole Foods Opens in Bedford Design/Build: PROCON, Civil: TFMoran for JHM Providing You With The POWER To Perform

Whole Foods officials break bread at opening

Bedford, NH – Crowds of eager Bedford shoppers lined the pavement for the opening of Whole Foods’ newest location on the former site of the historic Wayfarer Inn. The 43,000sf store on South River Road anchors Goffe Mill Plaza, memorializing the Goffe family’s name and 200-year ownership of the property. Employees cheered as the supermarket hosted its version of a ribbon cutting with a Bread-Breaking Ceremony. Town officials gathered with development owner, Jiten Hotel Management (JHM) of Brockton, Mass.; design-build firm PROCON of Manchester, N.H.; and civil engineer company TFMoran of Bedford, N.H. Fourth-generation descendant of John Goffe, David Woodbury, also attended the celebration. JHM developed the mixed-use project in partnership with PROCON, who designed and constructed the foundation and exterior shell. As early plans took shape, Bedford officials wanted to ensure the Wayfarer Inn’s long and rich history

Ironwood Builds Gaming Space Malden, MA – Ironwood has recently partnered with QB Entertainment to deliver a reality gaming space, with an expected completion date of fall 2016. This will be the second gaming facility completed by Ironwood, joining the Swedish-born Boda Borg. Although Boda Borg was founded in the ’90s in Sweden, Boston has America’s first location. This type of gaming is designed to challenge both mind and body simultaneously as guests are faced with puzzle-solving and physical obstacles. The days of the laser tag craze are winding down as a new type of entertainment, “reality gaming,” is ushered in. Derrick Zhao, partner of QB, says “When video games and other virtual games were introduced to the market, players found out that they can get excitement from the virtual world which they will never get from the real world. However, in recent years, the virtual gaming

experience cannot satisfy some players. They began to seek gaming experiences in the real world. Consequently, reality gaming has become more and more popular. Also, some reality games are fresh entertainment, and most players would like to try out of curiosity.” In addition, Zhao noted that “parents are always worried that their kids will become addicted in video games or online games. Reality gaming is able to provide the same or similar experience; besides, reality gaming provides opportunities for players to do physical exercise as well as mental exercise. As a result, parents would like their kids to play reality games instead of videos games for extracurricular activities.” Is this new craze here to stay? It’s hard to say. With other similar venues like Escape the Room, Trapology, and 5Wits, Ironwood believes it’s onto something.

Healthcare Dellbrook | JK Scanlan Completes Two Expansions

Falmouth Hospital Emergency Center expansion waiting area

Hyannis, MA – Dellbrook | JK Scanlan has completed major expansions for the Emergency Centers of Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Falmouth. Combined, the projects resulted in an additional 44,000sf of new space for Cape Cod Healthcare and the renovation of 23,000sf of space. These projects had a total project value of $27.6 million. Currently, the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Department is the third busiest in Massachusetts, providing emergency services to 84,000 patients every year, with patient visits peaking

www.high-profile.com

sharply in the summer months. For Dellbrook | JK Scanlan, the challenges were two-fold: to conduct two major expansions simultaneously while managing demolition and construction activities in an environment where patients, staff, and ambulances are constantly coming and going. Today, each hospital is home to modern, spacious new EC facilities that enhance patient care, increase patient capacity, and consolidate ER services and offices. Phase 1 of the Cape Cod Hospital

Cape Cod Hospital waiting room

expansion involved a complete renovation of interior spaces, including a new entrance and triage areas. Phase 2 focused on the construction of a building that now serves as the new emergency center for the hospital. Phase 3, completed at the end of 2015, entailed the building of a new radiology suite dedicated exclusively to EC spaces, as well as a new staff lounge, conference room, on-call lounge, and administrative offices and support spaces. Similarly, Dellbrook | JK Scanlan led expansion efforts at Falmouth Hospital, which included the new construction of

a 19,000sf emergency room, as well as a 3,000sf renovation of the old ER reception area. The initiative unfolded in two phases with aggressive timelines. Phase 1 consisted of the new waiting, triage, and emergency care areas. This work also included a large earth-shoring operation and the construction of a permanent retaining wall to support the patient and visitor drop off area. Phase 2 involved the renovation of the old entrance and triage area which integrates with a new, expanded waiting area, as well as the construction of new meeting and support spaces.

Construction

Rendering of MMCC facility / RKB Architects

Freetown, MA – AmeriCann, Inc. (ACAN) has released final plans for its Massachusetts Medical Cannabis Center (MMCC) development. The MMCC design is one of the largest and most technologically advanced cannabis cultivation facilities in the nation. The nearly 1 million sf project will consist of multiple planned phases for tenants in the Massachusetts medical marijuana market. The first phase of the project, in Building A, consists of 130,000sf of cultivation and processing infrastructure, which can be expanded to approximately 600,000sf, based on patient demand. When fully developed, MMCC is projected to create over 300 jobs, with an annual projected payroll of over $14 million to the local community. Through AmeriCann’s Preferred

Partner Program, the MMCC facility will be leased exclusively to companies that have received a provisional or final registration to cultivate, process, and sell medical cannabis by the Department of Public Health. “We believe the MMCC project will create a center of excellence and set a new standard for the entire cannabis industry for quality control, efficiency, and sustainability,” stated Ben Barton, CFO and founder of AmeriCann. “Utilizing advanced greenhouse technology for cultivation provides our partners with the ability to produce superior sun grown medicine with far less energy and a reduced environmental impact.” MMCC is the first planned and approved greenhouse project in the Massachusetts medical marijuana market.

How AEC Firms Can Use Google Analytics to Quantify Marketing and PR ROI continued from page 8 executive summary that identifies toplevel metrics, a few key data insights, and a quick analysis. The specific data that is included will depend on the firm’s marketing and PR goals. For example, if the firm’s CEO has been trying to launch a new practice area to specialize in laboratory design, your Google Analytics executive summary may highlight the increase in laboratory design keywords that are driving traffic to your firm’s website, as well as the statistics from a recent email blast about how to design a cutting-edge academic lab environment. Marketing and PR professionals can also use Google’s custom URL builder to add a tracking code to any URL, which can then be used to track the website traffic that results from a specific social

media post, email campaign, online ad, or article. The Key to Quantifying Marketing and PR Results

Google Analytics provides a powerful tool for quantifying how well a marketing campaign performed, identifying how to better reach potential clients and offer the information they truly want, and increasing engagement throughout the sales cycle. It brings AEC firms one step closer to determining ROI for marketing and PR activities. Susan Shelby, FSMPS, CPSM, is the president and CEO of Rhino Public Relations, a full-service PR agency focused on meeting the unique needs of professional services firms.

Construction is constantly changing – from materials and design, to energy efficiencies, technologies, and more. But the one constant a builder can always rely on is the quality and professionalism of a union carpenter. For more than 130 years the Carpenters Union has been on the cutting edge of innovation, and they continue to work at the forefront of new advancements in building today. In the end, it’s not just about partnerships. It’s about being successful. The New England Regional Council of Carpenters.

Both Boston-based projects are owned by Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC), a leading developer of affordable housing in the nonprofit sector and one of the largest community development corporations in Massachusetts. Kaplan worked with Abacus Architects & Planners and Hezekiah Pratt Architecture & Design on this affordable housing project. Restoring a 44,000sf historic building, formerly the Tropical Foods supermarket, has begun to create 30 apartment units of affordable housing and ground-floor retail space. Extensive renovations will be required, including new framing, roof, and core area for the elevator and stairwells. As a historic building, the masonry restoration must meet National Park Service standards. The building will receive new windows, new storefront, and new stucco on the exterior of the building.

Exterior of St. Botolph Terrace

Kaplan will pull all new utilities into the building (gas, water, electric, sewer, etc.) and install new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) systems. The first floor will house, in addition to the retail space, the building management office, lobby, and bicycle storage closet. Apartments will range from studio to three bedrooms. The project is the second in the three-phase development of Parcel 10 and the outcome of an eightyear effort by the Roxbury community and the city of Boston to bring economic diversity and private investment to Dudley Square. Several of the units were designed specifically to provide universal access for residents with mobility, visual, or hearing impairments. The building was also designed and constructed in compliance with the Enterprise Green Communities Program to maximize energy-efficiency. Sustainability measures included abundant daylighting, bamboo flooring, energy efficient window systems, energy and water conservation equipment, and building

The residential portion of the building sits atop a street level parking garage that provides 18 automobile parking spaces, 24 spaces for bike parking, a common laundry room, a property management office, utility rooms, maintenance storage space, and an attractive and welcoming lobby area. Trends and Hot Topics

One Woman’s Success Can Only Help Another Woman’s Success Carole Wedge, FAIA, LEED AP, president, Shepley Bulfinch

by Suzanne Abbott

That is a quote from Gloria Vanderbilt, but so true. I had the opportunity to attend the Ad Club’s Women’s Leadership Forum 2016 recently for the first time. Being invited was exciting because I feel strongly about the benefits of women working together and supporting each other. At this amazing event, I was surrounded by 1,000 women all there to share about women in leadership roles with no filter. There were speeches given by some of the most innovative and inspiring women. It got me thinking about what advice I would give a younger me, or another woman just starting out in the industry. I also had to ask some amazing women that I know to share their insight on this topic:

“My dad always used to say, ‘Aim for the stars — if you miss you will still be pretty high up there.’ I think I would tell my younger self to enjoy my ambition and keep pursuing my ideas and goals. “Say yes — when you are asked to lead, participate, or engage in an effort — you will always learn from the experience, and there is a power in saying yes and being open to possibilities! “Set your own limits — no one else will. Be humble and compassionate to everyone you work with, and take all of your vacation! No one else will, and recharging is as important as working hard. “Thoughts for younger women in the industry . . . “Work smart — working hard is overrated – burnout is real and you need to be good to yourself. “Make sure you are being paid equally

to your peers — it is a simple sign of whether you are in the right environment and truly valued. “Stay ambitious for yourself and your profession. Embrace the opportunity to change your firm, culture, and business model, and change jobs if you do not think your heart is in what you are doing. You are more powerful than you think you are!” “If I had to give one piece of advice to my younger self it would be to speak up. Too many times I would hang back, afraid I may sound stupid, only to have someone at the table say what I thought of 10 minutes before.” --- Lisa Davey – Rachel Zsembery, AIA, LEED AP BD +C, vice president, Bergmeyer Associates

“Throughout your career, continue to refine personal and professional goals that are driven by a sense of

purpose. Working towards achieving purposeful and meaningful goals that align with personal values can spur the momentum necessary to develop new skills by requiring you to push beyond your personal comfort zone.” Erica J. “These are the things that I would tell a younger me: Practice bravery; gratitude buttresses optimism; be generous; never compromise on character; and harness entrepreneurship.” Emily Grandstaff-Rice, FAIA, senior associate, Arrowstreet

“When I was younger, I got too caught up in defining my goals by how others saw me. It is difficult to challenge influential people when they provide well-intended career advice. But if their vision for you does not align with your passions, it can get you off track. You alone know the limits of your ambition. Think and dream beyond anyone’s expectation.”

“If I had to give one piece of advice to my younger self it would be to speak up. Too many times I would hang back, afraid I may sound stupid, only to have someone at the table say what I thought of 10 minutes before. Trust in yourself and in your knowledge and have the courage to speak your mind.” My own experiences have taught me many things.

Surround yourself with people who are different from you. They should be different ages and have different skills and backgrounds than your own. Too many young women in the professional world flock together in groups based on things that they have in common, instead of embracing variation. My most valuable relationships are with women who have characteristics and backgrounds that differ from mine. Never underestimate the power of networking; some of the most valuable relationships begin this way. Continuing to develop those relationships over time will be a great investment. Networking is a constant exercise that can never be truly mastered because there is always another relationship to build. Take care of your colleagues and contacts and they will take care of you. Networking also builds your

brand, and building a strong brand is the most important advice that I can give to young people when asked. Continually educate yourself, personally and professionally. Always reach for the next innovation in your field. It doesn’t always have to be in the form of a degree or formal education. Take a class or seek out a webinar. Know what’s “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said. Both personally and professionally we are taught from a young age to compete with each other, and it is engrained in society that women cannot truly be friends and support each other. We learn it in grade school, and it follows us through young adulthood. going on outside of your industry. You never know when you will be in a position to switch markets. If you are personally interested in something that is different than your work, do it. I became a LEED AP when I had no design or construction involvement; I just wanted it. It has created many opportunities for me throughout my career.

Give everyone a second look. Sometimes I have met people who seemed very different than they actually were based on a first impression. I have definitely gained in business by giving people a second chance or a second look. Do a self-assessment. You should know your strengths and weaknesses and be able to leverage both to your favor. Set personal and business goals often and reach for whatever seems unachievable. Collaboration over competition. “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women,” former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said. Both personally and professionally we are taught from a young age to compete with each other, and it is engrained in society that women cannot truly be friends and support each other. We learn it in grade school, and it follows us through young adulthood. I am grateful that I have realized that I am not competing with women in my network. Collaborating with the great women in my life has led me to the greatest opportunities in my career. If I come across a roadblock that I cannot move myself, I consult trusted women who I know will offer insight. Listen! That is something that as a business development manager, business leader, or friend could never be overstated. Always encourage others to share more about themselves in a conversation. You will get to know them better and

understand what makes them who they are. This understanding will benefit you in both professional and personal relationships. Find a trusted adviser and ask to be mentored; never stop seeking input from others. Ask good questions whether you are in a meeting, with clients, or out at an event. Better questions give you an opportunity to truly understand a subject. Trust your intuition — it’s always right. Women have an uncanny ability Trust your intuition — it’s always right. Women have an uncanny ability to listen to their intuition. I think sometimes we let the competitive nature of the business world dull that sense, or we override it. Stick with it; this will pay off in the long run. This applies in your personal life as well, maybe even more so. If someone or something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Trust yourself. Overflow Crowd for Girls in Trades

UNH Stadium Under Construction

UNH Wildcat Stadium

Durham, NH – Construction is currently under way at the Wildcat Stadium on the Durham campus of the University of New Hampshire. The overall scope of the project includes development of a 34,907gsf interior and 52,908gsf exterior for the new stadium. As much seating and amenities as possible fit in a compact site bound by the existing field and College Woods. Ledge slopes from one side of the footprint to the other, requiring the use of both spread footings and pile foundations. The exterior of the stadium features architectural ground face and split face block, custom sills, and Omni Block (a patented insulated masonry wall system), all manufactured by Genest Concrete of Sanford, Maine. Because this facility is part indoor and part outdoor, there are many steel penetrations in the thermal envelope. This thermal bridging was mitigated with the use of thermal break

pads. Classic waterstruck brick and standing seam gable roofs make this unique stadium right at home on this New Hampshire campus. One unique aspect of the new facility is that visitors enter underneath the videoboard, walk along a sweeping path, over a dramatic 90-ft. bridge, and find themselves right next to the concessions on the main concourse. One level up, the exclusive Victory Club offers 500plus exterior seats for viewing a game, a function area overlooking the woods beyond, floor-to-ceiling glass towards the field, and large outdoor patios. The top level has continuous views of the field for the press and coaches, and three dedicated platforms for broadcasting cameras at home on this New Hampshire campus. The project is scheduled to be completed prior to the first home football game in September.

Boston – The Carpenters union was part of a group that recently held a conference and career fair in Boston called Massachusetts Girls in Trades. The first of its kind in Massachusetts, it drew 400 high school girls who were interested in the construction trades. The event sold out, and another session is being planned. The keynote speaker was Sister Amenyonah Bossman, an assistant superintendent with Suffolk Construction and a member of Carpenters Local 33. Also attending the conference to talk with girls were Carpenters Local 424 business representative/organizer Amelia Phinney; Carpenters Local 218 member Cheryl Lieteau, who is also a full-time instructor at the NECTC, NERCC; Representative Liz Skidmore; and Local 33 carpenter Theresa Haymon. Not only did they talk to the girls, a separate group of sessions educated their instructors about unions, apprenticeships, and how they and their students can tap into training and career opportunities in the trades. Each year, the New England Regional Council of Carpenters (NERCC) holds

a Training Expo at the New England Carpenters Training Center (NECTC) in Millbury. Over a thousand high school vocational students and their instructors visit the facility, learning about apprenticeship opportunities and the union. Participating schools are asked to encourage female students to attend, and the numbers increase year by year. For several years, Building Pathways, started in Boston when now-Mayor Marty Walsh was head of the Building Trades, has made an energetic outreach to women and minorities, including preapprenticeship training. Rep. Skidmore has been involved and helped start a Building Pathways program in New Hampshire. It has been widely praised. The New England Regional Council has developed a group named Sisters in the Brotherhood, a mentoring and resource effort. They also work with government and development agencies to implement diversity goals and plans for projects, including the Boston Plan. Not only are goals being implemented, but they’re being met through efforts by the union and its contractors.

EnviroVantage Participates in UNH Food Fight Durham, NH – Remember the scene from Animal House where the infamous food fight breaks out? Well, the food fight at The University of New Hampshire isn’t quite like that, but a press release from UNH Media Services has described the situation like this: “Starting in late August, you won’t need to stalk almost-done diners in order to get a seat during rush hour at HoCo (Holloway Commons). This project will add 350 seats to the dining hall, meaning you’ll be able to linger over your lemon chicken minus impatient glares.” The $10.5 million expansion of the main dining facility, which included demolition, renovation, and addition, was designed to have a garden terrace theme, bringing the outdoors into the building. The renovation plans added two new

www.high-profile.com

seating areas on and over an existing rooftop terrace; the building’s central stairway and elevator shifted, moving all exterior mezzanines into additional indoor seating areas; and a rubberized rooftop was added. The day after graduation 2015, the largest addition to a dining hall in the history of the UNH began. Headed by general contractor North Branch, first through the door was demolition specialist EnviroVantage (EV), whose owner, Scott Knightly, a graduate of UNH, has partnered with the school on numerous projects and was keenly aware of the expectation of quality of work and the no-nonsense timeline to have this project completed before the students returned at the end of August. EV project manager Troy Purington

did his homework and, in collaboration with North Branch, identified the challenges that were to follow and the solutions. Getting in and out of a building built on a hill, getting waste and demo materials sorted internally and then out, saving 20foot windows plus heavy recycling, all while “being quiet” so as not to disturb the active building adjacent to HoCo were all on his starter list. Purington praised onsite manager North Branch by saying: “North Branch was a wizard in helping to coordinate this. We can get more people, more materials, more equipment, more money, more resources, but we can’t get more time, and North Branch’s’ ability to synchronize all the trades was masterful.” On August 26, 2015, classes began

once again on the beautiful Durham campus, and all the students saw upon their return were more tables in the dining hall and more food areas to choose from. What they didn’t see was how EnviroVantage set the table for this 100-day project that culminated with a renovated dining hall and a major addition, by performing: 1) demolition in stages and phases, including weekends; 2) utilization of lulls and Scissorlifts; 3) cutting-edge equipment, including the BROKK 100 and the SHERPA 100; 4) removing 255.89 tons of waste; 5) recycling windows, steel, brick, metal, and concrete; 6) zero work days lost; and 7) zero OSHA violations. Less chance for a food fight (no promises)!

An All-Weather Winner

by Peter Davey

If you own property in New England, you understand the value of insulation. Yellow fiberglass batting, foam boards, and spray insulation inside walls and roofs have become the immediate solution for reducing heat gain and heat loss, but what about windows? Windows can be up to 30 times less insulated than walls and roofs! Although windows generally account for a small portion of a building’s shell, more than 30% of all the heating and cooling energy used in U.S. buildings and homes is due to heat lost or gained through windows. American Window Film, Inc. is now installing 3M Thinsulate Window Film, an innovative, low emissivity (Low-E) climate control film — considered insulation for windows.

A cost-effective, year-round upgrade to existing windows, 3M Thinsulate Window Film provides the traditional benefits of 3M Sun Control Window Film by rejecting heat in warmer months and blocking harmful UV rays that cause fading. It takes performance a step further to protect against heat loss during colder

Senior Living Thoughtful Design Solutions Makes a Difference in Senior Living

Duncaster Retirement Community exterior

Open kitchen and dining area

by Nicole M. Owens and Myles R. Brown By 2050, the number of senior Americans with Alzheimer’s, or some other kind of dementia, is estimated to reach 13.8 million, triple the number affected today. Two senior living communities in Connecticut, which provide care to residents with memory challenges, are leading the way medical research influences thoughtful design solutions. Healthcare professionals say it is making a difference. While Covenant Village of Cromwell and Duncaster Retirement Community in Bloomfield each provide a continuum of care, both recently added memory care facilities. The Grove at Pineview in Covenant Village and Duncaster’s Assisted Living Memory Care Neighborhood are based on a “small house” design, where everything revolves around a central space, with furniture and finishes reminiscent of home. “Baby Boomers are changing the way we provide housing and care,” says Michael O’Brien, president and CEO at Duncaster. “There is increasing desire for a robust program of health and wellness. As a result, design features are changing. We are breaking down the institutional feel to create an environment that is important to residents, their families, and our caregivers.” Memory care has additional design demands. “Conceptually, we approach design for memory care like we would any project. We start with the belief that design can make differences in people’s lives,” says Myles Brown, design principal with Amenta Emma Architects of Hartford. “We are always focused on maximizing natural light and views to the outdoors, while creating well-proportioned, clearly organized, interconnected interior spaces that foster both social interaction and

www.high-profile.com

independence. The expertise comes in the form of subtle design details such as higher levels of artificial lighting, lighting control, interior finishes, accessibility/ safety, and heightened visual clarity. Good design makes these details invisible to most users so that no one would say, ‘This looks like a memory care project,’” Duncaster added a 12-bed unit for memory care, doubling its capacity for this particular population. A majestic 100-year-old oak, known by residents as the Charter Oak, is the organizing element for the new building’s form and placement, symbolizing strength, endurance, protection, success, and stability. It also became the inspiration for the interior design’s “Connection to Nature” theme. Architects centered the building on the oak tree, stepping the footprint to bring southern light and glimpses of the tree to each resident room. They opened up the end of the building to a glassed activity room, or conservatory, where the tree can be viewed on all its magnificence. At The Grove, a renovation rather than new construction, there was an opportunity to split two oversized rooms at the end of a hall to create a SAIDO room. SAIDO Learning is a new concept in memory care developed in Japan where residents are challenged with 30 minutes of math, reading, and writing at least five times a week, which has been proven to reverse or slow the progress of dementia. The Grove is the first facility in New England to employ the method. Pamela Klapproth, Covenant’s executive director, says, “The program helps reduce signs and symptoms of agitated behavior.” [The program] helps bring them back to who they are as people,” she notes. The over-arching criterion, as a result of collaboration between the owners of

Duncaster Retirement Community

each community and architects, was to design for cognitive clarity, simplicity, and way-finding ease to create a homelike environment that would promote health, wellness, and safety for residents with dementia. While architects provided research on current best practices from around the country, staff at each facility contributed expertise on the realities of caring for this special population and discussed how they wanted to care for them. Adults with memory issues often suffer from sleep disorders. If they spend a great deal of time indoors, the ability to distinguish between day and night is blurred, upsetting circadian rhythms. In both facilities, the abundance of natural light is critical, as research shows it contributes to learning and productivity. The open concept also is critical. “The most important thing is to have an environment where residents have lots of socialization,” says Parmelee. At Duncaster, everything revolves around a country kitchen. Residents can be involved in food preparation or setting tables. Breakfast is not served at a regimented time, allowing that some people are early risers and others are not. They can come to the kitchen area in a robe and pajamas, read

the newspaper, just like they did at home. Both facilities utilized interior strategies to help residents negotiate their surroundings. Colors and finishes were chosen with respect to degenerating vision in seniors. Contrasting colors between vertical and horizontal surfaces help residents feel boundaries. Subtle changes in floor patterns add interest and define spaces without being too contrasting. Some seniors may perceive high contrast as a hole or cliff, which can be disorienting. Health professionals think environments such as these will create better outcomes for residents suffering from dementia. This would include fewer hospital admissions and residents who are more socially engaged.“ We will be measuring these outcomes overtime,” O’Brien says. “I think we are providing better care to the whole person, not just medical but social as well,” says Parmelee. Informed design helps meet that expectation. Nicole M. Owens is a marketing associate and Myles R. Brown, AIA, LEED AP, serves as a principal-in-charge of the Senior Living studio at Amenta Emma Architects in Hartford, Conn.

Amherst, MA – Hampshire College will open its new 17,000sf R.W. Kern Center as one of the greenest buildings in the world. Hampshire’s first major new building on campus in nearly three decades, the R.W. Kern Center recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the campus community. The college worked with architects from Bruner/Cott & Associates of Cambridge to design a building that supplies its own water and energy onsite, processes its own waste, was built nontoxic to avoid red-list chemical products, and with materials mainly from local and regional sources to limit the project’s carbon footprint. The R.W. Kern Center’s $10.4 million project cost was made possible by private donations. It will house the offices of admissions and financial aid, welcome areas, classrooms, and social areas for students and campus visitors including a coffee bar. It was built as a living laboratory designed to facilitate and inspire education for its lifetime and is already being used this academic year as

the focus of science, math, architecture, and technology coursework. Hampshire designed the building with the goal of becoming only the ninth building worldwide certified under the most advanced green building standard in the world, the Living Building Challenge (LBC). It is pursuing a related plan for its campus to go 100% solar for its electricity this year, pending the completion of a successful regulatory process. The college committed to avoiding the use of building products containing any of a dozen toxic red-list materials or chemicals including: asbestos, chlorofluorocarbons, neoprene, formaldehyde, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), lead, mercury, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and wood treatments containing creosote, arsenic, or pentachlorophenol. Kern Center builder Jonathan Wright of Wright Builders in Northampton, Mass., says the most difficult challenge of meeting the living building standard was to avoid the use of any toxic red-list materials or chemicals in construction.

Hinckley, ME – Landry/French Construction Company has won a first place award in the 2016 Build Maine Awards Competition for its restoration and addition of the Charles E. Moody School at Good Will-Hinckley, home to the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences. Sponsored by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine, the award was presented at the AGC’s annual event at the Augusta Civic Center in April. This marks the second consecutive year that Landry/French has won a Build Maine Award, with last year’s honors recognizing the new State of Maine Offices in South Portland. The top award was received in the Building Category for the Charles E.

Moody School project, Maine’s first fully solar-powered, net-positive academic facility. The renovations and additions to the 110-year-old building were designed by Harriman Architects + Engineers. The PV system includes 267 photovoltaic panels installed on the building and are expected to deliver 91,000 kWh of power. The Moody School will use approximately 77,000 kWh annually, leaving a net positive of 14,000 kWh of clean, renewable power. This will offset the energy needs of adjacent greenhouses and other facilities on campus. The energy cost savings is estimated at $1.3 million over 25 years.
