Anastasia Barnes In this edition of High-Profile, we highlight awards from all across the New England AEC industry, including Excellence in Construction awards from the Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire/Vermont chapters of the Associated Builders and Contractors; the American Institute of Architects’ New England Architecture and Friendly Firm Awards; and Leadership Awards from the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP Massachusetts). This year’s group of award winners represents companies that are not only leading the way in innovative and unique design, but that are incorporating essential elements into their building projects that are paving the way for a healthier, more sustainable future for the planet. Firms throughout the industry are proactively considering sustainability and climate resilience right from the initial design

phase, and the result is building projects that not only represent leading-edge architecture, but that significantly reduce their environmental impact and ensure their longevity. Change may not happen overnight, but our industry is adapting and rising to the challenge of creating healthy and healing environments for not only building occupants, but the neighborhoods and cities they inhabit. Although we are celebrating our industry’s achievements, let us not forget to give back in any way we can. I’m on the board of the Boston chapter of the Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP) and in November, we held a canned food drive event. In all, we collected 132.63 pounds of food! Many other organizations are holding similar events. Read more about the philanthropic efforts of companies in our industry on page 46. One such firm is the KBE Building Corporation,

which for 15 consecutive years has held its annual “Gift of Gobble” event. This year, employees assembled and delivered over 500 Thanksgiving meal kits to local organizations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maryland. Another feature this month is a Q&A with Rocco Derrigo, president of American Energy Management, Inc. and Connecticut Temperature Controls. As he returns to serve another term as president of the Massachusetts Building Congress (MBC), I sat down with him to discuss his initiatives for MBC and what members can expect from the organization in the coming year. Read the full interview on page 44. In this issue, you’ll also find our 2023-2024 Annual Green Supplement. On the cover, we highlight Adimab’s new biotechnology facility in Lebanon, N.H. ReArch Company is the construction manager on this unique project, which
was built using a mass timber structural system. A low-carbon alternative to concrete and steel, “mass timber is just one of many sustainable products people will start seeing more of in construction as the industry shifts its focus from not only changing city skylines but doing it with a positive impact on the environment,” says J.T. Up-Front DEW Construction Breaks Ground on Bow Elementary School Project Bow, NH – DEW Construction announced it celebrated the groundbreaking for the Bow Elementary School Addition and Renovations Project, which took place on Oct. 30. The event brought together key stakeholders, including DEW Construction, the Bow School Board, H.L. Turner Group, the SAU 67 office, and hundreds of Bow Elementary students. The ceremony featured a performance by the students, who have been learning about construction, and prepared a special song titled “I’ve Been Watching the Construction.” The centerpiece of the project is the construction of an 8-classroom addition, totaling 12,850sf, in the heart of the campus to address the needs of the growing student population. This addition will include a new elevator and a partial basement to improve accessibility and accommodate a fire pump and sprinkler riser. Additionally, DEW Construction will oversee a significant interior renovation spanning 57,546sf. One of the main focuses of these renovations is the safety and security enhancements to the school, including the installation of secure classroom doors and a central vestibule

with a new building access system to monitor and control entry and exit points, to ensure the safety of everyone on the premises. The administrative offices will also be redesigned to create a modern and functional workspace for the staff.
The project also includes upgrading the school’s fire protection and alarm systems to meet current safety regulations. Acoustical ceilings will be installed in various areas to improve sound quality and reduce noise levels, in order to provide
a better learning environment for students. The bathroom facilities will undergo renovations to enhance functionality and aesthetics, and electrical upgrades will be made throughout the school. The project is estimated to be completed by early 2025.

Ground Broken on $100M Reimagination of Boston’s International Place Boston – The Chiofaro Company announced it recently embarked on a significant $100 million reinvestment and reimagination of International Place in Boston. The 1.8 million sq. ft. office complex is located along the Rose Kennedy Greenway at the crossroads of the downtown waterfront and Boston’s Seaport District. Standing at 46 stories and 35 stories in two towers, the comprehensive plans are designed to celebrate the reputation International Place has in Boston and the pivotal role it has played in the evolution of the city. The project leverages the building’s unique assets and is designed to position International Place as the most progressive workplace environment for the next generation. With guidance from global architecture firm Gensler and insight about what matters to employers and employees, the team says they have curated a program that addresses needs throughout the day with collaborative spaces and onsite services. The space will offer a members’ lounge, tech enabled rooms, mothers’ rooms, flex spaces, podcast rooms, large format conferencing event space, wellness offerings, a bar and a 3,000sf outdoor terrace with views and seasonal fire pits. • Reconfigured retail spaces with modern retail storefronts will replace the existing exteriors of the Oliver Street retail facade, to create a more vibrant retail experience and a community corridor between Boston Harbor and Downtown Boston. • The primary entrances at One and Two International Place will be reintroduced with new lighting, seating, and improved accessibility. The Fort Hill Plaza entrance will be completely rebuilt as a 32-foot-tall and 80-foot-wide glass portal providing transparency into the IP Commons. These gateways will take design cues from IP’s neighboring asset, The Greenway, by integrating horticultural elements and public seating into most areas of the ground floor.

The new 13,971 GSF building is designed to convey the organization’s goals and values, and provide a professional and compassionate environment to support the adoption and treatment of animals. Dellbrook|JKS Underway on Reconstruction of Historic Nantucket Hotel
Veranda House
Nantucket, MA – On its original site in Nantucket’s Downtown District, Dellbrook|JKS is reconstructing the Veranda House, a boutique hotel on 3 Step Lane, with luxurious accommodations and views of the harbor. In late October, Dellbrook|JKS and its trade partner, Turner Brothers, placed 110 cubic yards of concrete for the building’s second floor podium slab, completing a key milestone and structural element of the Veranda House’s base. On top of
the podium, three levels of wood-framed construction are now underway. “We’re excited to be going vertical at the Veranda House,” said Gerry McCormack, Dellbrook|JKS superintendent. “Island construction has its challenges, but the adaptability of our team and partners keeps us moving toward success and will ensure that this beloved location is beautifully restored.” After losing the original 1880s inn to a fire in July 2022, its owner, the Procac-
cianti Companies, made plans with the architect, Union Studios, to construct a nearly identical building in its place with minor changes to increase accessibility and adhere to modern building codes. In the rebuild, two sets of fire stairs have been moved from the exterior to interior, and a shed dormer along with faux balcony has been added to allow space for an elevator, servicing all four stories in the Veranda House. Like its historic predecessor, the new
Veranda House will feature the same classic wrap-around porches, 19 guest rooms, and traditional, New England-style, shingled exterior. The hotel features a blend of charming antique design with modern amenities, and the design includes an inviting lobby, three residential units for staff, laundry facilities, and a full kitchen attached to a lounge and dining room. Construction will continue through the winter into 2024, and doors are expected to open in the summer.

2023: A Year of Milestones and Momentum for AEM and CTC Submitted by American Energy Management/Connecticut Temperature Controls 2023 marked a year of remarkable progress for American Energy Management (AEM) and Connecticut Temperature Controls (CTC). Emphasis was placed on pioneering solutions, enhancing energy efficiency, and elevating occupant comfort. The delivery of real-time insights empowered customers for agile decision-making. Sustainability claimed a prominent role, with systems achieving substantial energy savings and emissions reductions. The dedication to customized client solutions remained steadfast, ensuring surpassing expectations. AEM and CTC have had a busy and productive year, wrapping up many projects in 2023. AEM has recently finalized a BMS system upgrade for a 30-story office complex. The previous BMS system was antiquated and comprised
numerous components that had become obsolete. Consequently, the controllers could not undergo reprogramming to offer improved functionalities. AEM implemented a cutting-edge BMS front end and replaced the existing controllers, ensuring significant energy savings for the client. This upgrade provides a futureready solution that can support additional enhancements such as air quality monitoring, lighting controls, customized user apps, and more.
CTC is in the final stages of completing a Building Automation HVAC Renovation project in Windsor, Conn. This multifaceted project involved three phases, encompassing the removal of existing HVAC equipment and its replacement with upgraded counterparts. CTC took charge of installing new DDC controls for air handler units and reheat coils, wiring a new VRF system, and incorporating multiple unit heaters. The last phase of the project focused on the boiler plant and hot water pumps, including the implementation of domestic hot water monitoring. Additionally, approximately 145 fin tube radiation units were installed, each equipped with space temperature sensors and unit ventilators. CTC played a pivotal role in overseeing project management, providing engineering expertise, managing electrical installation, and conducting thorough system checkouts for the new
DDC system. The result is a cutting-edge controls system that meets the customer’s state-of-the-art requirements. Furthermore, investing in our team’s growth and development was paramount. Comprehensive training programs ensured that our experts stayed at the forefront of industry trends and technological advancements. Throughout the last year, we’ve experienced notable progress and expansion, highlighted by the introduction of several skilled professionals to our team. Across both locations, we’ve welcomed nine new team members, each bringing unique perspectives and expertise. We are committed to maintaining this growth trajectory into 2024. As we stride into 2024, AEM and CTC are poised for even greater heights in sustainability, energy savings and smart buildings. O&G Industries Looks Back on 2023 Submitted by O&G Industries O&G Industries, a family-owned company headquartered in Torrington, Conn., is commemorating its centennial year as the state’s largest privatelyowned construction management firm. The Building Group has accomplished an impressive year, marking significant milestones in education with the opening of five new schools, including the $44 million Frank D. Spaziano Elementary in Providence, R.I., which marks their first vertical construction project in the area. The Group has also managed other education projects throughout Connecticut, including the $82.5 million, 148,122sf New Fairfield High School in New Fairfield, Conn., designed by JCJ Architecture, and the 110,000sf Ox Ridge Elementary School, a joint venture with A.P. Construction in Darien, designed by SLAM. Additionally, they oversaw construction of the 148,855sf, $78 million Candlewood Lake Elementary School in Brookfield, Conn., designed by Tecton, as well as the 65,000sf Bowers Elementary School renovation and addition project in Manchester, which is their second Manchester Public School project that achieved net zero energy designed by TSKP Studio. The Group broke ground on the Keeney Elementary School, the third Manchester school designed to achieve net zero energy by TSKP Studio, after the completion of the Buckley Elementary school, which received industry recognition including the CREW CT Award of Excellence for Sustainable Education, Sustainable Architecture Excellence Award, Sustainable Architecture

Focus: Awards ABC MA Celebrates 2023 EIC Award Winners Norwood, MA – The Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC MA) celebrated its 31st Annual Excellence in Construction Awards, held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Norwood on Nov 2. More than 200 people attended the event. In all, 14 projects were honored. Four won Eagle awards, which represent the pinnacle of achievement; eight won Merit awards, which is reserved for work that stands above the rest; and two won the Leadership award, which honors work that demonstrates leadership beyond the results on the jobsite that make a broader impact in the industry and the community. BW Kennedy & Co. received an Eagle Award in the General Contractor – Commercial – Over $5 Million category for the transformation of 580 Pleasant St. in Watertown. BW Kennedy was hired as the design/build contractor to convert the existing manufacturing building into a Class A multi-tenant lab building for client Griffith Properties. The 147,000sf, three-level building includes a half-level
basement and new rooftop mechanical penthouse. Designed by DiMella Shaffer, the entire facade of the building was reconstructed with a lab module, using curtainwall and architectural metal panels. The main entrance and thru building lobby are designed to provide abundant daylight and a direct visual connection from the front to the Charles River in the back. Challenges included unique site conditions, proximity to wetlands, an aggressive 16-month construction schedule, and COVID-19 impacts on product availability and cost escalation. Additionally, with the original structure having been constructed on a landfill, the work included a large demolition and hazardous abatement component. Kaplan Construction received a Merit Award in the General Contractor – Institutional category for the Trust Early Learners project in Brookline. “The Trust Early Learners project stands as a testament to collaborative excellence, and it is fulfilling to be recognized for it,” said Nathan Peck, president of Kaplan Construction. “We overcame significant challenges during both preconstruction and construction, including nine rounds of pricing, a tight urban footprint, an abutting 170-year-old building, pandemic-related disruptions, and a fourth-floor terrace playground. Logistics planning, precise workflow, and continuous communication with abutters and neighboring businesses were crucial in delivering our client this state-of-the-art early education center.” Callahan Construction Managers received an Eagle Award in the General Contractor – Renovation category for its work on Squirrelwood Apartments, a 12-building, 88-unit affordable housing development located in Cambridge developed by Just-A-Start Corporation. Working in a densely populated area of Cambridge posed many challenges for this restoration project, including constructing an apartment building to Passive House standards, working with challenging soil conditions, and managing odd geometries at a site near other residential properties. “This recognition underscores Callahan’s dedication to creating affordable housing solutions that not only meet the needs of residents but also elevate the standards of construction excellence,” said ABC MA president, Greg Beeman. NEI General Contracting was recognized with a Merit Award in the General Contractor – Renovation category for its work on the occupied renovation of a 490,000sf affordable housing complex for Homeowners Rehab, Inc. (HRI). Located at 808-812 Memorial Drive in Cambridge, the Rivermark complex contains 88 apartments in a 10-story building, 212 apartments in a 19-story building, 38,000sf of commercial space, and five levels of parking. The project pursued and received an Enterprise Green Communities Certification, a program aimed at transforming the quality of affordable housing in America, meeting criteria related to integrated design, site improvement, resource conservation, operational energy considerations, and more. Dacon received an Excellence in Leadership Award for its work on the Monogram Foods and Edwards Vacuum facilities, both in Haverhill. Beeman commented, “Dacon’s work on two projects key to the downtown revitalization of Haverhill was an outstanding example of leading by example. Dacon collaborated with the city of Haverhill and the Commonwealth to make a lasting positive impact on the local community, and helped create 600 new jobs as well as provide support for local families and students.”

ASM Holds Biennial Gala, Elects new Board Members Boston – On Oct. 26, the Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts (ASM) held its Biennial Dinner Gala & Elections at the Omni Parker House in Boston.

CT ABC Holds 2023 Excellence in Construction Awards Southington, CT – The Connecticut Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (CT ABC) held its annual Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards ceremony on Oct. 18 at Aqua Turf Club in Southington. The Excellence in Construction awards program was developed to honor the state’s most innovative and highquality Merit Shop construction projects. Bard College has selected KBE to provide Construction Management at Risk services for its new, four-building residence hall complex providing 450 beds and a student Headhouse commons building. Set on six acres, the overall Annandale Residences complex encompasses 130,000 sf. The three 3-story residential buildings are wood-framed. The 10,000 sf, steel-framed, two-story Headhouse provides student meeting space for work collaboration, gathering, and dining. The six-story structure includes a cast-in-place concrete podium with five stories of wood-framed residential space above. In all, the building encompasses 632,613 sf of residential space (394 units/587 beds) and retail space, along with a five-level, 213,162 sf precast parking garage providing 589 spaces. KBE is the design-builder for this new, 200,000 sf, seven-story residence hall. When complete in the summer of 2024, new campus facility will provide 657 beds, a 500-seat dining hall, game rooms, seminar and meeting rooms, and multi-purpose spaces. The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification. Brightview Senior Living | Harrison, NY
KBE’s current senior living portfolio includes the new 155,750 sf, four-story senior living community underway in Harrison, NY. When complete in spring 2024, the community will provide 144 residential units and support services for independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Shelbourne at Mt Pleasant | Mt Pleasant, NY
Another project is this four-story, 91,000 sf senior living community, which will provide 100 assisted living and memory care units. Amenities include fitness areas, salon, theatre, commercial kitchen, dining rooms, and an internal courtyard for memory care residents. The project will wrap up next summer.

Among recently completed work are the following: The Chelsea at Washington Township, NJ: Owner Capitol Seniors Housing just held its grand opening, celebrating the completion of the two-story, 78,263 sf senior living facility. Designed by Meyer Design, Inc., the new community provides 22 memory care units and 63 assisted living units, along with dining facilities, sports lounge and theatre, meditation room, library, and outdoor gardens. This fall, KBE wrapped up three new senior living communities in the Mid-Atlantic for national developer Columbia Pacific Advisors - for a total of 19 projects to date for this client. Each senior living community is approximately 100,000 sf, two stories, and provides between 90-100 assisted living and memory care units. The most recently completed projects are located in Chesapeake, VA; Hanover, PA; and Newark, DE.

Two CMP Exterior Projects Recognized with CT ABC Awards

Suffield, CT – CMP Exterior, a Connecticut-based trade firm specializing in commercial exterior coverings, was recently honored with two project awards from CT ABC’s Excellence in Construction awards program, which was held Oct. 18. CMP Exterior was recognized as a “Specialty Trade Contractor” for its work on the Ground Transportation Center at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks and the Vero at Orange Senior
Living community in Orange. CMP worked as a trade contractor for KBE Building Corporation on both projects, which each took first place in their categories at the annual event. First Place-Mega Projects was awarded to the Ground Transportation Center project at Bradley International Airport. The 1.4 million sq. ft. facility for Conrac Solutions and the Connecticut Aviation Authority is part of the State of Connecticut’s expansion plans for

the airport and provides a 4-story consolidated rental car facility and garage complex for six rental car agencies. A second 4-story garage provides fueling stations and full automotive repairs and service areas for the rental agencies. As part of its award-winning role, CMP coordinated the custom fabrication of the high-end fiber cement panels. Each panel had to be custom-measured and fabricated before installation atop the rain screen system on the buildings’ exterior.
First Place- Health Care/Large Projects was awarded to The Vero at Orange, a new, 3-story senior living community. The 163,022sf facility provides 78 independent living units, 69 assisted living units, and 28 memory care units, along with numerous amenities. CMP Exterior provided full installation of the James Hardie exterior fiber cement siding.

Boston – The Boston Chapter of Professional Women in Construction (PWC) announced the winners of its annual awards program at its Awards Gala on Oct. 19. In its second year hosting the event, PWC Boston welcomed over 150 architecture, engineering, and construction professionals to celebrate the industry and, in particular, the achievements of the five award winners. This year’s event included the addition of Chiderah Okoye, chair of Transform Power Systems (TPS), as emcee and keynote speaker, as well as a new “Community Impact” category to acknowledge the difference that PWC members make in their communities. The company holds an annual all-supervisors safety meeting each May with 50 to 60 supervisors and managers convening to focus on safety, emphasizing industry trends and its own past injury performance. MEMIC safety management consultant, Rodney Stanley, said the company’s efforts have paid off. Sullivan & Merritt’s experience modification rating – an industry metric that measures a policyholder’s past workers’
compensation claim costs as well as the probability of future additional claim costs – is now less than half the national average for all employers. efficient while still iconic and elegant.” Amenta Emma’s design for Canaan Parish in New Canaan involved the demolition of all existing units and the new development of approximately 100 units of affordable and market rate housing, and on-site office/clubhouse. The redevelopment included phasing to minimize the
off-site relocation of existing residents. The project received Energy Star v3.1, Indoor airPLUS, and NGBS Silver + Wellness Certifications. Partnering with developer Heritage Housing Inc., Canaan Parish received awards for “Best Affordable Community” and “Best Public Private Partnership Development.”

2023 Canstruction Boston Award Winners Announced Boston – The winners of the 2023 Canstruction Boston design/build competition were recently announced. Mixed-Use Nauset Completes 94-unit Mixed-use Apartment Complex in Union Square Somerville, MA – Nauset Construction recently completed Union 346, a 94-unit apartment community that includes 2,000sf of ground floor retail, for a joint venture partnership between John M. Corcoran & Company (JMC), The Grossman Companies, Inc., and SMT Development. Located in the heart of Union Square, the transit-oriented development is located near 18 restaurants, nine entertainment venues, and many public transportation

options, including the new Green Line Extension. Union 346 also has a Walk Score of 97 and a Bike Score of 99. “Union 346 brings much-needed market-rate and affordable housing to
the vibrant Union Square neighborhood, which will further support the emergence of Somerville as an innovation hub,” said Tim Corcoran of JMC. Designed by ICON Architecture, the 5-story wood-frame apartment building was built over a 2-story, steel/concreteframed podium at the former site of J.J. Sullivan Plumbing & Heating. Nauset recreated the decorative corbels that were part of the former structure and
integrated them into the new building’s facade. Union 346 includes both studio and one-bedroom apartments, with 18 designated as affordable units for renters earning between 50%, 80%, and 110% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Union 346 is pet-friendly and amenities include a fitness room, bike storage and repair station, dog washing station, lounge with a kitchen and gas fireplace, roof deck with a fire pit, rooftop
garden planters, and views of the Boston skyline. The community also features an on-site backyard-style patio, complete with cooking grills and furniture. The building is professionally managed by JMC. In collaboration with the City of Somerville, the project team also designed and constructed a publicly accessible park at the rear of the site that provides open green space. The building’s exterior facade is comprised of cast stone at ground level with a combination of brick and composite metal panels. A white TPO membrane roof with concrete pavers tops the building, and casement windows and balcony sliding doors complete the building envelope. Constructed with the environment in mind, Union 346 was designed and constructed to LEED standards and is awaiting formal certification. “Bringing Union 346 online further exemplifies Nauset’s focus on being the go-to construction manager for complex, highly efficient, midsize urban infill projects throughout the Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville markets,” said Anthony Papantonis, president of Nauset Construction.

Restoraton and Renovation Erland Completes Ice Rink Renovation

Newton, MA – Erland Construction announced it has completed renovations on the ice rink at The Fessenden School in Newton. After successfully completing three projects together, Erland and CBT Architects were chosen by the independent boys’ boarding and day school to improve the school’s existing ice rink facility. The scope of work focused on renovating the building’s interior to support the ongoing needs of Fessenden’s hockey and ice rink rental programs. Erland updated the rink to include new fire protection services, life safety systems, and ADA accommodations and completely revamped the public restrooms. Throughout the project, Erland worked closely with the school and Preferred Mechanical to coordinate construction around the concurrent

upgrades to the rink’s ice surface. “We value the partnership we’ve established with The Fessenden School in the time that we’ve worked together,” said Ben McConchie, academic group manager, Erland. “It was great to be back on campus and revamp these spaces before students return for the upcoming school year.” The campus remained occupied throughout construction, with demolition taking place during the off hours to minimize disruption to the school’s operations, child care center, and summer camp activities.
Abbot Repairs Community Center Newton, MA – Abbot Building Restoration Company, Inc. announced it recently completed significant chimney repairs at the Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Newton. As the building had been taking on water for some time, the JCC management team initially hired a roofing contractor to inspect the roof and patch areas where necessary. However, the leak persisted following the roof repair leading management to focus on the chimney. Their next step was to hire an engineering company that utilized advanced drone technology to provide a close up view of all sides of the chimney. This precise inspection identified significant damage to the brick, failed pointing, severe cracks in the cap, and a lack of sealant/mortar under the chimney liner flange. Based on a strong working relationship over the years, the JCC management team contracted Abbot to provide essential repairs to the chimney. After erecting pipe staging to access the chimney from the roofline to the top of the chimney, Abbot utilized its masonry experience and expertise to cut and point the entire chimney, replace all of the cracked bricks, patch the chimney cap cracks, and seal

the gap between the metal flange and chimney cap. Abbot then applied two coats of clear sealer onto the brick to provide a secure waterproof barrier. After Abbot’s work was completed, the roofers returned to replace any damaged slate and to repair visible roofing defects.

On Oct. 27, Massport CEO Lisa Wieland and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103 Business Manager Lou Antonellis toured the Greater Boston Joint Apprentice Training Center (JATC) together and observed new apprentices learning handson skills as they forge new careers. Massport apprentice, Alejandro Cardenas, said, “I’m learning everything, from small outlets to part of the high voltage system. This is an amazing opportunity. Everyone is for you, nobody is against you, and that’s one of the things about this place. Each apprentice completes 10,000 hours of on-the-job training with experienced journeypersons, plus 1,000 hours of intensive classroom instruction with qualified instructors, leaving with a Journey level electrician or Systems Technician Commonwealth of Mass electrical license. “We deeply value our partnership with Massport,” said Antonellis. “Workforce development and training are crucial to keep creating the kind of good, union jobs our communities need. Organizations and Events Massachusetts Building Congress Introduces New President, Rocco Derrigo At its most recent program meeting, Rocco Derrigo, president of American Energy Management, Inc. (AEM) and Connecticut Temperature Controls (CTC), was introduced as the new president of the Massachusetts Building Congress (MBC). Since 1921, the MBC has been bringing together decision makers from all corners of the multi-billion dollar design and construction industry in the Bay State. Comprised of architects, engineers, construction management, contractors, labor unions, and materials suppliers, and supporting industries including law, finance, insurance, education, and communications, the MBC strives to connect and keep its community informed of opportunities and evolving policies and trends impacting their businesses. Derrigo served as president in 2016 and has chaired the organization’s golf tournaments and “Golf Plain and Simple” events. He takes the reins from Fran Harrison, director of business strategy for SMRT Architects and Engineers, who served as MBC president in 2022 and to October 2023. High-Profile sat down with Derrigo recently to talk about what’s in store for the MBC.
High-Profile: As a returning president for MBC, what key initiatives do you plan to introduce during your 20232024 term to continue advancing the goals and mission of the organization? Rocco Derrigo: The MBC is in a good position today, and the board and I want to build upon this momentum. We have a new executive director, we’ve streamlined many of our business processes, we’re refreshing the website, are updating our by-laws, and developing a program to give our member companies greater visibility. We kept educational programs going virtually during the pandemic and in this past year we’ve produced some impactful in-person programming and two golf events this summer, all wellreceived by our members and industry partners. The key initiatives for my term will be to: • Focus on great content for our breakfast meetings so we provide our membership with an incredible opportunity to be in front of upcoming projects and to learn about emerging opportunities and industry trends. We also want to hear from industry members as to programs and content that can assist them with their business challenges. • Provide our members and industry colleagues the best opportunity to network within the AEC community, including with people driving the projects and policies so important to us all.

We invite new people, including young professionals and students, to get involved. There is a place at the table for all. Our success is measured by giving our members the best opportunity to enhance and grow their businesses. We want to be the leader in providing valuable content at our networking meetings. HP: Serving as both the president of AEM/CTC and MBC is undoubtedly demanding. How do you see that balance? RD: I see the two roles as very independent. As president of the MBC, I must work in the best interest of our AEC industry and the organization, helping to take the great position the MBC is in now and expand/enhance our presence. The board and I are passionate about taking the MBC to new levels, so the entire membership – all sectors and all ages or career levels – will benefit. HP: MBC has a rich history dating back to 1921. How do you see the organization evolving in the face of changing industry dynamics, and what strategies will you implement to ensure MBC remains relevant and valuable to its members? RD: The legacy of the MBC is very important to me and the organization has continued to evolve over its centurylong history. As president, I feel we must maintain the stature of the organization while also making sure we change with the current market forces. The Boston marketplace is very dynamic, and the
MBC will need to continue to be as well. We need to make sure we have a good balance of new members with fresh ideas to help drive the content of meetings moving forward. We need to ensure that young professionals and college students obtain both the knowledge and connections needed to make their careers successful. We need to continue to find leading-edge programs that help members see where the market is going and how these changes can benefit their businesses and their careers. A good example is our most recent program focusing on the Downtown Boston Improvement District and programs supporting the conversion of office buildings to residential. As the workplace and laboratory markets evolve, we need to help our members stay on top of opportunities. I think our last program was a great example of how the MBC will lead the way. HP: MBC plays a crucial role in bringing together professionals from different sectors within the AEC industry. How do you envision fostering greater collaboration and knowledge sharing among these diverse stakeholders during your presidency? RD: MBC’s role is providing the content in our networking meetings to bring members of the AEC industry and supporting businesses together. History shows us if the program is right – offering opportunities, knowledge that impacts their businesses, and connections that benefit all, the community responds. Most importantly our members want to attend meetings that open opportunities to grow their businesses. In the case of our younger colleagues, we also want to provide the opportunity to meet mentors, grow their professional network, and get involved in a meaningful way. We need to be laser focused on providing strong content, so our community sees value in spending their valuable time attending our events. HP: Your involvement with MBC spans several years, and this is your second term as president. What do you see as the most critical challenges and opportunities facing MBC in the upcoming year, and how do you plan
to address these challenges while capitalizing on the opportunities? What would you consider as your top priorities, and what outcomes or changes would you like to see by the end of your term in 2024? RD: I am honored to have been asked to lead the MBC again. As we are exiting the post-pandemic time, the AEC industry is also faced with challenging economic times in many of our sectors. These challenges include an inflationary economy, higher interest rates, workforce development and supply, and evolving real estate demands, all along with talk of slowdowns in the construction industry. All these issues are an opportunity for the MBC to help the industry see the next emerging markets that will flourish. Our goal is to help the AEC community learn about the changes and provide our membership and industry colleagues with networking opportunities, so they have a business advantage. Our success will be measured by the impact the MBC continues to have on the AEC industry as well as the success of our members and emerging young professionals.

Assembly Marks Largest-ever Gathering of Women in Construction in Boston Boston – An event on Oct. 28 marked the largest-ever gathering of women construction workers in Boston, as over 1,000 union tradeswomen congregated to celebrate the progress achieved in promoting inclusivity and diversity within the union construction industry.

Women Build Boston was established in 2022 with a mission to empower and unite women in construction. The event welcomed women of all skill levels engaged in the building trades across New England, as well as their allies. Jenaya Nelson, a 26-year member of Laborers Local 223, expressed the sentiment, saying, “We are not only building our skyline; we are also building our labor movement.” Darlene Lombos, the executive
secretary-treasurer of the Greater Boston Labor Council (GBLC), emphasized the remarkable growth of this collective effort, stating, “What started as a small group of us has grown into a sisterhood of solidarity for thousands of Boston tradeswomen. Last year, we were making history. This year, we’re blazing the trail and letting everyone see how the power of sisterhood can be a major force for change.” Chrissy Lynch, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, highlighted the common values that unite the participants,
saying, “We all share the same values; we want to build the middle class. We want an economy that works for everyone, not just the rich and powerful. We’ve got to fight for new laws that help working people. KBE Foundation Completes 15th Annual ‘Gift of Gobble’ Event Farmington, CT – For the 15th year running, the KBE Foundation hosted its annual Gift of Gobble Thanksgiving meal assembly program on Nov. 18 in Farmington. Staff members from KBE Building Corporation, Elite Construction Resources, and CMP Exterior, along with their families, gathered at Camp Courant to assemble and deliver 500 Thanksgiving meal boxes to community service organizations, a new annual record for the donation program. an assistant project manager just over one year ago. With this promotion, he will oversee projects from planning to implementation. He will lead the project team, ensuring all Riley objectives regarding quality, schedule, cost, safety, and customer satisfaction are met. He has over 17 years of industry experience,
encompassing project estimating, site supervision, and management. Cameron Riley has recently been promoted to field operations manager from his previous position as superintendent. He began his journey with DEW as a foreman over five years ago. He will now oversee the management and development of DEW’s trade workers and foremen based out of the firm’s New Hampshire offices. Additionally, he will work closely with project teams to effectively plan and fulfill various resource requirements.
