LETTER FROM THE

Editor

Dear reader, This issue of High Rise Life magazine is dedicated to architecture. Throughout this issue we explore contemporary architectural thinking and architects that are strategically involved in the creation of our built environment and urban design. The range of articles is both diverse in form and content. We intentionally displayed architectural projects through visually striking imagery. A key example of this can be found in our cover story feature of one of Southern California’s most photogenic homes —Elementi in Beverly Hills. Inspired by the Pacific Coast Highway bridges and waterfalls, designer Michael Chen has interpreted the beauty of the California Coast’s natural and man-made elements into an equally stunning architectural masterpiece. Enjoy this issue!

Phantom Oribe

A Bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom in Collaboration with Hermès Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has co-created a magnificent Bespoke Phantom in a unique collaboration with Hermès. Designed and handcrafted by a combined team of Bespoke specialists at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, West Sussex, and Hermès in Paris, Phantom Oribe reflects the personality and passions of its owner, Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. “This magnificent expression of our pinnacle product represents a landmark for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, bringing together two houses with more than three centuries’ combined experience and heritage. It is the result of a deep, genuine collaboration between the Houses of Rolls-Royce and Hermès, in which designers, materials specialists and skilled craftspeople worked side by side to create a truly one-of-a-kind Phantom. It has been an extraordinary privilege to unite on such a creatively challenging, technically 14

demanding commission and bring our client’s remarkable vision so beautifully to life.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars “We are really delighted to see this bespoke car come to life after a remarkable journey of creation and craftsmanship conducted hand in hand with both of our houses. We are proud to have contributed to creating a unique and contemporary expression of our client’s vision, thanks to our spirit of innovation, the quality of our materials and the know-how of our craftsmen, who have developed, amongst other things, unique stitching and upholstery techniques for the interior of the car and a hand painting technique for a bespoke gallery. It has been a real pleasure to work alongside the Rolls-Royce experts and to see how this car expresses all the values that Hermès cherishes every day.” Axel de Beaufort, Design and Engineering Director, Hermès Bespoke Division.

“This unique Phantom is a fusion of East and West, ancient and modern, serenity and exhilaration. It was a great creative and cultural exchange working with Hermès; we learned a great deal from each other. It is always a pleasure when a client brings us a bold, clear and imaginative vision, and a great thrill to see it realised so perfectly.” Michael Bryden, Lead Designer, Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has co-created a magnificent Bespoke Phantom in a unique collaboration with Hermès. The client envisioned the car as a ‘land jet’, bringing the serene exclusivity of private air travel to the road. www.HighRiseLife.com

The car’s striking two-tone exterior matches the characteristic green and cream glazes of antique Japanese Oribe ware, of which Maezawa-san is a prominent collector. The upper part is finished in Oribe Green, a fully Bespoke colour created exclusively for the client; in an unusual move, Rolls-Royce has made the paint available for use on the client’s private jet the Phantom will be paired with. Developed over many months by specialists in the Surface Finish Center at Goodwood, it perfectly captures the lustrous, deep-green glaze that characterises these 16th century ceramics. The effect is beautifully completed by the cream-white lower section. The Oribe ware-inspired colourway harmoniously continues through the interior, created and realised through a true meeting of minds between Hermès designers and craftspeople in Paris, and the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople at Goodwood in West Sussex. Together, they applied their shared expertise and ingenuity to ensure every individual component embodies the finest traditions of both houses. The interior is finished predominantly in Hermès Enea Green leather, extending to details that include the immediate touch-points of the client; for example, the steering wheel, duchess handles, gear selector and the rotary controls for the motor car’s climate settings. The Hermès leather flows around the upper instrument panel, interior pillars and parcel shelf. It also enrobes less visible surfaces including the glove compartment and luggage compartment lining, centre console, decanter April/May 2021

stowage compartment and Champagne cooler. In a sign of the project’s truly collaborative nature, and the two makers’ mutual esteem, the glove compartment lid is embossed with the signature Habillé par Hermès Paris. Delicate Hermès piping adorns the headrest cushions and calf supports of the rear seats, while soft Seashell White accents and matching lambswool floor mats create a sense of light and space throughout. The interior is also replete with examples of Rolls-Royce Bespoke design and handcraftsmanship. Wooden speaker frets, for example, are formed by meticulously perforating the Open Pore Royal Walnut veneer applied to the doors, creating a seamless, textured aesthetic and delicate haptics. Open Pore Royal Walnut is additionally applied to the centre and rear consoles and picnic table backs; in another first for Rolls-Royce, the interior features Hermès ‘Toile H’ canvas on the door armrests, centre and rear consoles and, most notably, the signature headliner.

Hermès brings its distinctive equestrian heritage and innovative craftsmanship know-how to the car, with the leather upholstery created using stitching and edge-painting techniques originally employed by master saddlers. For Phantom’s Gallery, a feature unique to Rolls-Royce, that runs the length of the motor car’s fascia, Hermès commissioned an artwork based on a design by the celebrated French artist and illustrator Pierre Péron (1905–1988) who created many of the House’s iconic scarves. The work, inspired by the famous Hermès horse motif, is hand-painted on Open Pore Royal Walnut and is presented as though staged in an art gallery, behind glass. Torsten Müller-Ötvös added, “This majestic and tasteful Rolls-Royce Phantom demonstrates what is possible when talented people from two of the world’s great houses work closely together alongside a far-sighted, inspirational client like Maezawa-san. It is a meeting of minds, expertise, visions and skill that represents the very best of our respective craftspeople and capabilities.” 15

F

rom experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences.

That mentality is increasingly evident in all aspects of life, especially with home design and decor. After all, spending more time at home means more time to discover what truly evokes happiness. At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color. With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy style in your home.

Appliances In the past, appliances were meant to blend into the decor to be less obvious, albeit essential, elements of a kitchen. A more contemporary approach: vibrant appliances that get noticed. You can find major appliances in a wide range of colors, but if you’re not sure about going that big and bold, many smaller countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and toasters, come in a range of colorful options, too.

Architecture When contemplating where and how to apply color to a space, avoid boxing in your options. Think beyond traditional wall space when planning ways to change the color in a space; be thoughtful with color and highlight architectural details to elevate the interest and charm in your home. Take a 360-degree immersive color approach, painting the same shade from floor to ceiling and all around to create a mood-boosting lift to a room. To infuse more color and boldness into your space, consider a timeless and elegant shade of red, like HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Color of the Year. This paint color, “Passionate,” is a deeply saturated hue that is daringly rich and invigorates the senses. This bold and empowering red is steeped in history, merging modern design with traditional charm.

Furniture Whether you’re into project pieces you can transform into something new or simply shopping for furnishings that complement your space, be sure to consider how the furniture fits into the overall color scheme. Selecting furniture that fits with the design brings a more cohesive and stylized feel to the room. For example, a desk and bookshelves in pale natural hues can lend warmth to an office with walls painted a cool dynamic blue.

Cabinets Painted cabinets are on-trend, and if you’re bored with basic whites and grays, you’re not alone. Designers are going bold in the kitchen and using cabinetry as a showpiece. These color palettes create inspiring spaces that invite you to get busy baking or simply pull up a chair and linger over a cup of coffee. If you’re concerned about how to bring a color palette together, consider using a collection that has been intentionally curated to mix and match shades for a perfect look no matter which hues you choose. You can easily achieve a new look with an option like the Delightfully Daring Color Collection from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. With earthy tones inspired by nature and a dose of vibrancy, the shades are simultaneously energizing and calming. The palette makes it easy to introduce statement colors in unexpected ways so you can feel confident in your selections. nspired by the Pacific Coast Highway bridges and waterfalls, designer Michael Chen has interpreted the beauty of the California Coast’s natural and man-made elements into an equally stunning home, but with an Asian twist and jetliner views. Located in the ultra-exclusive Beverly Hills enclave of Trousdale Estates, Elementi has recently listed at $65 million, or the Bitcoin equivalent.

Not a stranger to drama or luxury, Chen’s design skill is borne through his extensive world travels, as a set designer for Warner Brothers, furniture designer in Milan, theme park designer in Hong Kong and luxury home designer and developer across Southern California. The façade of Elementi displays Michael’s inspiration in the bridge entry to a large pivoting front door over water that cascades down past a dining room suspended over a lower courtyard, and then continues into an atrium on the lower level.

23

Measuring 18,000 square feet, the home has seven bedrooms and fourteen baths, a great room dressed in marble with views to the ocean, an atrium open from the roof to the lower floor, a chef’s kitchen and butler’s pantry designed so cooking takes place away from the clean, minimalistic lines of the main kitchen. The master suite cantilevers over a balcony and has two walls of glass capturing the views, along with dual baths clad in marble and one with a skylight. Elementi is the only home in Trousdale Estates that is permitted for a daylight basement, which is accessed via a Venetian plastered spiral staircase.

The basement/ground floor is designed around entertaining and its pièce de résistance: a 150-year-old imported Mediterranean olive tree in the atrium. There is also a 2,000-bottle wine cellar, a wellness center and gym, office and a home theatre. One of Southern California’s most photogenic homes, Elementi is listed with Michael Chen and Aaron Kirman of Aaron Kirman Group at Compass, Los Angeles. Each of the three-bedroom beachfront residences in this new release have sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. All are appointed with the finest European finishes that grace bright, open living spaces. Only a dozen of the 40 total residences are penthouses that offer a rooftop terrace gathering space with private plunge pool, outdoor kitchen and 180-degree ocean views as far as

30

the eye can see. Outside the Residences themselves, Ocean Bay will offer a wealth of first-class amenities including a private Residents’ Club for owners. Ocean Bay’s beachfront residences and penthouses are priced from $800,000 to $1.2 million USD. Ocean Bay Luxury Beach Residences & Penthouses are located on Punta Cana’s famed Bávaro Beach, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Ocean Bay features world-class amenities and restaurants including a private Residents’ Club with oceanside pool and dining reserved exclusively for Private Residence owners.

Ocean Bay broke ground in spring of 2020 and is slated to be completed in the second quarter of 2022. The project is being developed by Noval Properties, one of the leading real estate development groups and most trusted engineering and construction firms in the Dominican Republic. Noval Properties will also offer a complete worry-free, maintenance-free property management service for all owners which includes property rental through the resort when the owner is not enjoying the residence themselves.

www.HighRiseLife.com

The rarity of undeveloped oceanfront property and new construction on Bavaro Beach coupled with the pent-up demand for travel and second home ownership in the Dominican Republic has dictated an unconventional decision to break ground amid a worldwide pandemic. Noval leadership is confident in their decision to move forward with the project and their certainty is bolstered by the support of the Dominican Republic government which has issued an assurance to all tourists that it will cover costs associated with testing positive for Covid-19 while in the country, mitigating much of the hesitancy visitors feel about international travel. “We are excited to announce this new release of premier oceanfront residences and penthouses that will become the crown jewel of Punta Cana. The Dominican Republic’s tourism has held strong throughout the Covid-19 setbacks and we are seeing a resurgence of travel to our country, especially the Punta Cana area and Bavaro Beach. Interest in owning a second or third residence in the Caribbean is also growing exponentially now that most professionals have found an ease and freedom in the efficiency of working remotely. The timing could not be better to introduce Ocean Bay Luxury Beach Residences,” says Barbara Warren, Director of International Development for Noval Properties.

About Ocean Bay Luxury Beach Residences Just 30 minutes from the Punta CanaInternational Airport, Ocean Bay Resort and Luxury Beach Residences is bringing a new level of luxury to the shores of Bavaro Beach, Punta Canain the beautiful Caribbean country of Dominican Republic. Big Budgets From Out-of-Town Homebuyers Are Edging Out Locals In Popular Destinations Like Phoenix & Las Vegas With a record share of home searchers looking to move to another metro, out-of-towners are making it difficult for local residents to win bidding wars. The average out-of-towner moving to Phoenix has $630,000 to spend on a home, versus $510,000 for locals. Nationwide, 31.5% of Redfin.com users looked to move to a different metro area in the first quarter, according to a new report from Redfin, the technology-powered real estate brokerage. This is up from 30.3% in the fourth quarter of 2020 and 26% a year earlier, and the highest share since Redfin started tracking migration in 2017. The upswing in people moving from one area to another since the start of the pandemic is due partly to remote workers moving to relatively affordable areas in search of larger homes 32

with more outdoor space. One consequence of pandemic-driven migration is that out-of-towners are driving up home prices and making it difficult for local residents to win bidding wars.

Out-of-towners have significantly bigger budgets than locals in the most popular migration destinations The average housing budget for out-of-towners moving to Phoenix, the number-one migration destination for Redfin.com users in the first quarter, was $627,000, 23% higher than the $510,000 average budget for local buyers. In Austin, the next-most popular destination, out-of-towners had an average budget of $855,000, 32% higher than the average local budget. Next comes Las Vegas, where the average out-of-towner had a $582,000 budget, 16% higher than locals.

“Remote work is here to stay for many Americans. The long-term cultural shift is disseminating money once concentrated on the coasts throughout the country,” said Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather. “Affluent remote workers are able to get more for their money by moving from job centers like the Bay Area to more affordable places like Phoenix and Las Vegas. But local residents looking to buy their first home are losing out because of the big budgets flowing into their hometowns. Many local buyers, particularly those who aren’t selling a home to fund their purchase, are being forced to compromise. They’re searching for smaller homes in farther-flung neighborhoods, or even dropping out of the search altogether.” Phoenix home-sale prices were up 20% year over year to $366,000 in March, and they www.HighRiseLife.com

were up 28.2% to $427,000 in Austin and 13.9% to $336,000 in Las Vegas. But even with significant increases, prices in those destinations are much lower than the places migrants are moving in from. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the top origin for people moving to Austin, the typical home sold for $1.43 million in March, and in Los Angeles, the top origin for people moving to Phoenix and Las Vegas, it was $774,000.

budget of $698,000, 33% higher than the average local budget.

“Not only are a lot of remote workers moving to Las Vegas, but many people are moving here and bringing their businesses with them, setting up shop in Nevada,” said local Redfin real estate agent Lori Garlick. “Inventory is so low that the market is frustrating for locals, first-time buyers and people who don’t have big down payments. Potential buyers are waiting in line to tour anything with a pool and a nice-sized lot. But if a buyer doesn’t have a budget big enough to pay over list price and throw in other incentives for the seller, like waiving the appraisal fee, they’re just not going to get the house.”

Out-of-towners have bigger budgets than locals in 32 of the 35 cities included in Redfin’s budget analysis. San Francisco, San Jose and Fremont, CA (part of the Oakland metro) are the only cities where locals have higher budgets than migrants. That stands to reason, as the Bay Area has the highest median income in the country, which means locals are likely able to afford higher-priced homes than those moving in from other areas.

The average housing budget for out-of-towners moving to Nashville in the first quarter was $719,000, 48% higher than the $485,000 average budget for local buyers, a bigger premium than any other metro. It’s followed by Atlanta, where out-of-towners have an average April/May 2021

Atlanta, where 26% of Redfin.com users searching for homes in the first quarter were from out of town, was the fifth-most popular migration destination in the first quarter. Nashville, where 39% of Redfin.com users searching for homes in the first quarter were from out of town, is also a popular destination.

Dallas and Atlanta were the next-most popular destinations for people looking to move to a different area, meaning they—along with Phoenix, Austin and Las Vegas—had the biggest net inflows of Redfin.com users in the first quarter. A net inflow is a measure of how many more Redfin.com home searchers looked to move into a metro than leave, out of a sample of 2 million users.

Relatively affordable inland metros are typically the most sought-after for Redfin. com users looking to leave their home metro, a trend that has intensified with the pandemic. Net inflow of home searchers has increased significantly from a year ago in all of the top 10 migration destinations.

Migrants are looking to move away from New York, the Bay Area and Los Angeles In terms of places people are looking to leave, New York, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Seattle top the list of places with the biggest net outflow in the first quarter. A net outflow is a measure of how many more Redfin.com home searchers looked to leave a metro than move in, out of a sample of 2 million users. Expensive coastal cities tend to be the places Redfin.com home searchers are looking to leave; in fact, the list of places with the biggest net outflow is the same as it was in the fourth quarter of last year. But as is the case with inflow to the most popular destinations, net outflow has shot up over the last year, more than doubling in seven of the top 10 places migrants are looking to leave. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore Unveils New East Wing Showcasing a Library Reception, Lounge and Bar The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore has reimagined its East Wing to include a Library Reception and an exciting new food and beverage concept called Republic. Conceived by tonychi studio, the Library Reception, Lounge and Bar are designed to evoke the warmth, intimacy and elegance of a private residence. While each space boasts a distinct interior design and experience, their spatial layouts blends harmoniously, with floor-to-ceiling partitions which may be opened or closed depending on the mood or time of day. 38

“Having worked on both Colony and Summer Pavilion restaurants in 2015, it is a privilege and honour to return to The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, which is an architectural masterpiece by Kevin Roche. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to define both the expected and the unexpected for this landmark hotel that embodies modern Singapore and today’s global lifestyle”, said Mr. Tony Chi, founder of New York based tonychi studio. www.HighRiseLife.com

Library Reception The new Library Reception will redefine the guest arrival and check-in experience. Here, guests will encounter an understated elegance inspired by a grand residential library, characterised by natural oak wood floors and ceilings, and stocked with literature on diverse subjects to encourage guests to enjoy and appreciate the space for as long as they desire. A new Digital Hub will offer a suite of business centre services.

Republic Designed to depart from the usual expectations of a hotel food and beverage outlet, Republic is a multi-dimensional concept which transforms throughout the day, and serves from morning to late in the evening. Adjacent to the Library Reception is the Lounge, with three grand chandeliers and expansive walls adorned in blue herringbone fabric. Guests are invited to savour their time in this residential parlour, enjoying light bites from the four vitrines throughout the day, à la carte dining options, or an elegantly modern five-tier afternoon tea experience. After dark, imbibe on liquid history at Republic Bar, which showcases an extensive cocktail menu devoted to a narrative of historical anecdotes originating from Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Italy; and a curated selection of the finest vintage spirits epoch of the 1960s. While the decade of the 60s was marked by cultural and social revolution, it saw the rise of style icons and the legends of rock music, as well as the international jet set, which led to a sophisticated era for cocktailing.

April/May 2021

The Republic Bar concept in collaboration with Proof & Company pays homage to this era where freedom, expression and individuality were celebrated, with a cocktail menu that showcases flavours, ingredients and sensations inspired by the influential hallmarks of the 1960s, and around four cultural epicentres of importance and meaningful change. “The dawn of Republic creates symmetry and balance between the East and West wings of the hotel, with Colony restaurant alluding to that period in history when Singapore was part of the British Crown Colony, through to its next major milestone with the formation of the Republic of Singapore in 1965, anchoring the hotel experience with a deep sense of place”, explained Mr. Peter Mainguy, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Take a seat at the rich, dark toned, natural wood bar and allow our bartenders to share stories about a “Mythical Beast” that was once spotted on our tiny island, the British designer behind the “Mini Skirt”, the Space Race that inspired “Stardust” and how Ferruccio Lamborghini went from making tractors to “Miura” - the first super car. In addition to the main bar, Republic offers six unique Home Bars, exquisitely detailed with handcrafted red Venetian glass, and embodying the opulence and residential style of home parties in the 60s, while our bartender or vintage spirits ambassador plays host to your revelries. Decorative artwork throughout the bar celebrates the decade of the 60s, while a curated music playlist complements the transition of the East Wing from day to night, and a standalone deejay booth offers the option of live music. very Mother’s Day is an opportunity to show your mom just how special she is and how grateful you are for all she does. Make her day with a present that wraps the personal touch of a handmade craft and the novelty of a quirky trend into one unforgettable gift.

This year, upgrade your usual flower fare with an arrangement that’s beautiful and delicious: a California cheese bouquet. Customizable with ingredients tailored to fit your loved one’s tastes, these thoughtful gifts combine cheeses, berries, herbs and more wrapped together for a perfect Mother’s Day celebration centerpiece and gift with an artsy (and thoughtful) touch. Created by cheesemonger Jessica Lawrenz, these easy-to-follow crafts for a Classic Cheese Bouquet or a California Bounty Cheese Bouquet call for wholesome cheese made with 100% sustainably sourced Real California Milk from dairy farm families. For best results, use medium-bodied cheeses that can be easily skewered without softening up at room temperature. Find additional cheese bouquet inspiration and more recipes to celebrate Mother’s Day by visiting realcaliforniamilk.com.

Classic Cheese Bouquet Using knife, cut floral block into shape that fits inside vase. If using bouquet paper, use base at least 3 inches across and 4 inches high. Wrap floral block in plastic wrap to keep from touching items in bouquet; place inside vase. If using bouquet paper, place wrapped floral block in mug to keep from falling over. Use various cookie cutters to prepare cheeses as flowers. To create salumi roses, lay out 4-5 slices salumi overlapping one another. Fold row in half and roll into rose bud, securing with u-shaped toothpick. Place on skewer, add herb leaves and use floral tape to secure ends of toothpick to skewer. Repeat. Skewer cheeses, salumi roses, goldenberries, lemonquats, mini apples and mini artichokes. To assemble, start in center with larger items. Use shorter skewers or toothpicks to secure smaller items closer to edges. Use rosemary, bay leaves and wax flowers to fill gaps in back of bouquet. To wrap: Once finished, gently lay block with skewers on top of paper, wrap and secure with tape and ribbon. Craft courtesy of Jessica Lawrenz (@mongermoldandmilk), Courtesy of Family Features.

5 Tips to Promote Health During Spring As seasons change, there’s often a great deal of shuffling and movement, including common allergy triggers like trees, pollen, mold spores, dust and dander along with pesky sinus pressure. Combined with changes in barometric pressure and weather patterns bouncing up and down, spring can be one big pain – literally. “This is the time of year when most of us are excited to see the change of seasons, but millions of allergy and sinus sufferers welcome spring with trepidation,” Dr. Ian Smith, M.D., said. “Common triggers such as trees, pollen, mold spores, dust and dander can wreak havoc for many. Having a trusted multi-symptom reliever of upper respiratory allergies like Mucinex Sinus-Max is absolutely key in making the season more enjoyable for all suffering from sinus and congestion issues. With a reliable multi-symptom product stashed in your medicine cabinet, and the combination of simple modifications like being mindful of your indoor climate, eating more fruits and veggies, and staying hydrated, can help limit sinus discomfort this season.” Take steps this spring to ease the impact of sinus and allergy problems and focus on your overall wellness for a smooth transition with these tips: Control your allergy and sinus triggers. Knowing what flares your allergic reactions can help prevent discomfort. For many people, monitoring pollen counts and limiting time outdoors on high-pollen days can help reduce reactions. You might also avoid hanging laundry outside, as pollen can stick to clothes and sheets as they dry, and ask for help with yardwork to limit your exposure. Find some pressure release. When nasal congestion or sinus pressure build, it can feel like a ton of bricks have landed on your head. However, you can find relief with products designed to help clear up your stuffy nose, relieve headaches and thin and loosen excess mucus. Often, if you’re experiencing sinus problems, you’re dealing with multiple symptoms. From congestion to headaches and sinus pressure, an over-the-counter medicine like Mucinex Sinus-Max can break up your sinus symptoms with just one dose or your money back. Manage your indoor climate. Even when you start spending more time outdoors, it’s important to keep close tabs on the quality of the air inside your home. If you’re prone to allergy flare-ups or sinus infections, manage the humidity level by using a humidifier or dehumidifier. If outdoor allergens are a concern, avoid opening windows and doors, and instead rely on air conditioning on warmer days. Also be sure to change filters regularly and use an air purifier for added protection. Keep fluids flowing. More time outdoors in warmer weather can quickly lead to dehydration, especially if you’re working up a sweat. Drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated and keep your body operating in top shape. Staying hydrated can also help keep mucus moving, allowing you to ease through allergy or sinus problems. Update your medicine cabinet. A seasonal change is a good time to take stock of your medical supplies and medications to ensure you have what you need for the months ahead. Discard any expired prescriptions or over the counter medicines and be sure restock common spring and summer essentials like bug bite ointments, sunburn spray and multi-symptom products like Mucinex Sinus-Max to help temporarily relieve sinus and congestion symptoms in one dose. Also be sure to replenish your first aid kit with plenty of bandages and wound care supplies. For more information, visit Mucinex.com, Courtesy of Family Features.

Why EQ Beats IQ in Driving ‘True’ Leadership Success Written by Merilee Kern, MBA

In many way’s to your ability to influence people—a proficiency that is driven by one’s Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ). Leadership is more about soft skills—the ability to inspire, persuade, guide, sway and communicate in a way that’s “heard” rather than just “listened to”—than it is about being the best relative to hard skills. As a leader, if you do not understand your team’s motivations and feelings, you will never be able to establish an optimally-functioning team and reap the copious rewards related thereto. The result is needless opportunity loss.

you even when times get tough. That is why it is vital to your leadership to allow your EQ to lead.

To become more adept at such soft management skills, leaders can actively work to improve their EQ. This effort includes and actually starts with—understanding your own emotions and triggers. What motivates and demotivates you, evokes feelings of stress or satisfaction, compels you to go “above and beyond” or not participate at all? You can conduct these inner exploration exercises on your own in a journal or daily walk, perhaps, while some leaders amp up the effort by conducting self-assessments with a coach, mentor or therapist.

Recall that EQ builds companies and IQ builds products; it is not possible to have one without the other. At the same time, one is not valued over and above the other. Although the theme of this lesson is to let your EQ lead, that does not make it more valuable than IQ—both are required to win.

“If you are to lead with maximum efficacy, you must build an enthusiastic following,” notes leadership authority Andrew Wyatt, author of the new book, “Pro Leadership: Establishing Your Credibility, Building Your Following and Leading With Impact.” “This requires relational and people skills as well as all of the related soft skills that contribute to one’s EQ. And, a leader cannot staff EQ out. You must to have it yourself. Those who don’t will need to develop it to realize truer and more unencumbered success.” According to Wyatt, whose eponymous company develops leaders worldwide through coaching, speaking, training and consulting, the good news is that everyone can develop their EQ. Unlike IQ, which pretty much is what it is, EQ can be nurtured, developed and increased. Below are a few excerpted insights from Wyatt’s book on why EQ matters to leadership, how to lead amid different EQ/IQ types and developing your leadership EQ—both in your organization and within yourself.

Why EQ Matters to Leadership Pro leaders must have the ability to influence others to follow them, and the most important ingredient in influence is relationship. The key to a winning relationship is winning the heart, and doing so is not possible without EQ. You may have a high IQ and natural giftedness in your vocation, but if you are unable to influence others—you may be effective as a manager—you will never be a leader. Remember, leadership is about people, and people will follow with their head for only so long before they eventually grow weary and peel off or fade away. But if, through your relational abilities, they feel your love and care for them, they will follow

April/May 2021

But EQ alone won’t be enough. In fact, it must be balanced with IQ. Although IQ is not a natural leader attribute, and as a result is best relegated to the back seat, it is important to the success of any enterprise. Your role as leader will be to balance both EQ and IQ, to manage the balance and tension between the two. That balancing act will be manifested-through how your team works together.

3 Types of Players When filtering for EQ and IQ, there are three categories of people you will find. I have worked with, followed, or led all of these: EQ dominant; IQ dominant; and EQ/IQ flexible. A strong culture, organization and team will have all three types of players on their roster. Where the two dominant types will normally be position players, most pro leaders will be flexible. Let me explain. To be great a company, you must add value through offering a great product. IQ builds products. People who are IQ dominant have high IQs—a natural gift that, when applied, results in great products that add value to people’s lives. Consider the advances in medicine, science and technology. None would have been possible without the work of IQ-dominant people. To successfully lead an IQ-dominant player, you will need to first satisfy their intellect through a clear and rational articulation of your vision and strategy. Next, they need to be enlisted in forming the tactics you will employ to accomplish the strategy. Since they are the product designers, they will want to have shared ownership of the product before they follow your lead and buy into your vision. Once you have satisfied their intellect, you are free to win their hearts. The second player type is the EQ-dominant individual. This person is also a position player. You will most often find them in advertising and creative positions, client service, marketing and sales—critical roles if a company is to be successful. Rarely will they build a product, but their EQ is invaluable in product development, specifically in refining products in order to bring forward the product the market is demanding. These individuals are valuable because they understand the basic truth that no one has ever bought anything; they are sold on something.

47

To lead EQ-dominant players, a leader must always start with the heart. You must offer a creative vision and strategy and they must see you as the courage behind the plan. They want to be led, from their heart to their head. And while you must appeal first to their creative side, you may not ignore their rational side because that is where their fears exist. As their leader, they will naturally look to you for courage and to help them overcome their fears. The third type of player on your roster will be what I define as EQ/IQ flexible. Every great leader I have met or studied fell into this category. The defining characteristic of this person is her ability to balance EQ and IQ specifically, having the ability to discern which attribute needs application to a particular circumstance and to execute the proper timing of the use of the attribute. In athletics, this is called hand-eye coordination. All athletes have it to one degree or another, and the degree to which they do is what separates the amateur from the professional. EQ/IQ flexible personalities have the ability to walk into a room and immediately judge the chemistry, while subsequently activating the attribute most suited to the current environment. Whether a board room or a lunchroom, they are comfortable in both environments because they have the ability to adapt instantly to each environment.

dysfunction caused by this imbalance. As the leader, it is critical for you to have no favorites, with the ability to defend both camps. Developing EQ among your leadership team is a necessary activity of pro leadership. These leaders realize they cannot succeed alone. As John Maxwell astutely commented, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go with others.” The extent to which you foster EQ among the members of your inner circle is the extent to how far your leadership team will go. To do this as a leader, you will need to start at the same place you did with your cultural EQ: your attitude. Leadership development of any type is a process, not a destination. It is a journey that never ends. When you stop developing, you stop growing. No matter what your own EQ level is, ongoing personal development is always important. Read all you are able to find on the topic. Second, if you don’t have one, consider working with a coach. Third, join a peer group or start one yourself. It is true that iron sharpens iron. Developing EQ is not a solo sport, you will need to have some people to rub up against. Leadership is a lonely business; you need to have someone to talk to, a safe environment to

share and people who will tell you the last 10 percent—that bit of information most people won’t tell you. “IQ builds products, but EQ builds companies and followings. So, as you step out today to lead, let your EQ lead the way,” Wyatt urges. “Develop your EQ, your culture’s, your team’s, and your own. Do so, and you will have taken a big step in developing your following and your pro leadership abilities, putting yourself in a prime position to be able to motivate the people you lead.” About Merilee Kern, MBA Forbes Business Council Member Merilee Kern, MBA is an internationally regarded brand analyst, strategist and futurist. This is my personality type and, as a result, I find these people the most difficult to lead. Nevertheless, to lead EQ/IQ personalities effectively, start with their heart by appealing to their deepest motivations. But don’t stop there. You will need to follow with the logical argument as you clearly build your case. If you win them to your cause, they will become your greatest ally because they will naturally become spokespersons for that cause. However, this is a two-edged sword. If you lose their trust—or if they simply do not accept your vision and the mission—it may hinder their work. In the end, these personalities are a strong proof-source that the true measure of leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.

Developing EQ in Yourself and Others Setting an EQ standard starts where every other cultural development begins, with leadership. That would be you. Based on the principle you read about in the last chapter, to develop a culture-wide EQ you will need to start with yourself, beginning with your attitude toward the people you are leading. As humans, we naturally favor ourselves. That means, if I am an EQdominant person, I will naturally be drawn to other EQ-dominant people. The same is true for the IQ-dominant person. This is fine for friendships. However, favoring one trait over the other in your organization will create a culture of favoritism, resulting in 48

5 Fundamentals to

Financial Recovery

The COVID-19 public health crisis triggered a financial crisis for many individuals and families. Whether their pain was caused by furloughs, layoffs, or pay reductions, people were thrown off track from meeting monthly obligations and from progressing toward their long-term money goals. Now as vaccines help the U.S. edge closer to normalcy and more people regain employment, recovery can be a slow process. But there are simple steps people can take to get back on track and stay on solid financial ground, says financial planner Aaron Leak, the founder of ECL Private Wealth Management. “The key to gaining back lost ground and full recovery is making sure you put the fundamental pieces in place,” Leak says. “One of the challenges is figuring out how to do it amid continued uncertainty with the economy. But the most important thing is to take control of all the factors of your financial situation as best you can.” Leak offers these steps to financial recovery: Learn about assistance programs. Leak says many people who are eligible have not pursued avenues of aid such as unemployment benefits, credit card hardship programs, and the Paycheck Protection Program, which is available to the self-employed and contractors as well as small businesses. “It’s important for people to understand what’s available to them,” he says. “Some don’t think they qualify when in fact they do, or they feel they’re being a burden, or they didn’t think the pandemic would last this long.” Refine your budget. “Sitting in their house much of the year forced people to take a hard, honest look at their finances and ask the question, ‘What is it that I do that costs me so much money?’ “ Leak says. A comprehensive analysis starts with doing a deep dive on all expenses and monthly bills, he says, and weeding out poor spending habits and things they can do without. That breakdown of costs enables one to hammer out a sensible budget that creates more room for savings, paying down debt, and investing. Prioritize savings. Leak says the pandemic exposed how many people lacked a sufficient amount of savings for an emergency. “Having an emergency fund is essential,” he says. “You need a minimum of three months’ worth of expenses saved up, but ideally enough money to get you through a full year. If you’re back to work, each month take a portion of the money you’ve trimmed out of your monthly expenses and build your emergency fund.” Know your 401(k) options. If you are furloughed or laid off but leaving your 401(k) with the company, you may be able to take a loan or a withdrawal from it due to the pandemic. “This or cashing out your 401(k) should be a last option because it can jeopardize your retirement nest egg,” Leak says. “After the 2008 financial crisis, people who stayed in the market experienced financial recovery from their losses.” Another option is rolling over a 401(k) into an IRA account. “This offers many other choices to grow your money,” Leak says, “since an IRA can be a mutual fund, annuity, CD, or almost any other type of financial instrument.” Refinance your home. Home value is akin to having another emergency fund, Leak says. “Your home equity is sitting there doing nothing for you unless you tap into it,” he says. “Whether it be a home equity line of credit or doing a refinance and taking cash out while the interest rates are low, either could be a good option.” “Embracing a new level of priorities and discipline will serve people well in making better money decisions,” Leak says. Hungry Artist David Datuna on Take A Bite Out of Hunger NFT Series The Dole Sunshine Company has joined forces with acclaimed artist David Datuna to create an NFT (non-fungible token) collection inspired by their Sunshine for All™ rallying cry. The aim is to increase awareness of food insecurity and malnutrition worldwide, while raising funds toward alleviating hunger today. The works will be available for purchase via NFT auction platform Rarible.com on May 6 at 3:30pm PST.

Inspired by Datuna’s viral banana-eating moment at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, which earned him the moniker of “The Hungry Artist,” Dole has partnered with Datuna to create an NFT series to further the brand’s goal of making nutritious foods accessible for 1 billion people. The need for good nutrition has never been greater with nearly one-quarter of the world’s population experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity1 and globally one-

third of food produced for human consumption lost or wasted2. “I’m a big fan of companies that understand their responsibility for stewardship and admire Dole’s goals to support ending hunger, achieve food security, end food waste, and promote sustainable agriculture,” said David Datuna, the Hungry Artist. “My NFT collection for Dole, along with the physical artwork, tells this story www.HighRiseLife.com

through symbolic animations, sound and imagery.” The partnership is part of the overall global Dole Promise, which aims to increase access to good nutrition, decrease food waste, plastics in packaging and greenhouse gas emissions. The brand has already been hard at work around the world, and in 2020 launched a partnership in the City of Jackson, Mississippi, with 10 public and private institutions, including the local Boys & Girls Club. Dole’s Sunshine for All TM Cities initiative brings nutritious food and education into underserved food deserts. Proceeds from the NFT sales will be donated to Boys & Girls Clubs to fund nutrition and hunger-focused programming, including Dole’s Sunshine for All Cities™ program. With this initiative, the Dole Sunshine Company is hoping to raise the funds needed to expand this program and other nutrition-focused initiatives nationally, deepening the partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs and bringing education, pop-up farmers markets and nutritious food to cities across the country, including our ongoing efforts in Jackson, and expanding to Baltimore and beyond later this year. “Our promise to provide access to good nutrition to 1 billion people by 2025 is one we know cannot be accomplished alone. Therefore, we seek out partners like David Datuna and the BGC that are closely aligned with our values,” said Pier-Luigi Sigismondi, global president, Food and Beverages Group. “To create systemic change, we need to converge purpose with creativity, innovation and technology. This effort is the best representation of how we want to make a difference in this world. As a brand that can literally eat its purpose, David’s perspective on using art and digital technology as a platform for awareness and societal change, is one that clearly resonates and inspires us.”

April/May 2021

Taking a Bite Out of Hunger Datuna will create a five-part series focused on the intrinsic connection between nutrition and food security. The NFTs will represent people coming together to take a bite out of hunger. The fifth and final piece, Sunshine for All, is a pop-art inspired montage of the first four pieces highlighting the importance of closing the gaps to good nutrition for all. This work will also live as a physical piece featuring Datuna’s signature lens technique, a layered composition signifying society’s individual viewpoints. The entire art series will go on sale on May 6. The fifth montage piece will be at auction through May 8th and will be on display in a virtual gallery (Decentraland), as well as

a physical location in New York City to be announced shortly. Net proceeds from the NFT sales will be donated to Boys & Girls Clubs to fund nutrition and hunger-focused programming, including the Sunshine for All™ Cities program. In addition, Dole is working to limit the environmental impact of the NFT sale by partnering with decarbonization advisor, Aerial, to create a climate positive solution. This will not impact the amount of funds raised by the auction and will ensure any future sales are also appropriately offset.
