I
moved into my new home four years ago the 22nd of January. Do any of you ever have the feeling that time is skipping a few miles ahead of us?
So, at this time of the year I update the ‘inventory’ of my household goods, by making a photo library of what we have accumulated and seeing through the lens of my camera what might look a little worse for the wear. Why would I do something like this do you ask? There are a number of factors at play. One thing is that it’s very easy to get into a rut and excuse that old chair that my husband insists is his one and only love of his life. That may be the case, but an old, dilapidated chair is not only ugly, but after a while it is not enhancing the comfort that he claims. Throwing nice looking covers over it when we have company still doesn’t hide the fact that it’s no longer comfortable to sit in. Now if you are dreading going out and buying a new sofa, sectional or just a decorative side chair, holding tightly to the wallet in your purse or back pocket, I have great news for you. The pricing of new furniture is no longer the burden on our budgets that it used to be. You can find some wonderful new pieces for half the cost we experienced back in the 80’s and 90’s. Now you may think I’m being redundant, but before you head out on your new mission, sit down, look through some of the latest decorating magazines and see what is being offered. Tear out pictures of some of the items that you think would look great in your home. This small step before you go out into the fashion world can save you from becoming overwhelmed by all the choices. If you are in the Las Vegas area, stop by one of my favorites: Design’s by Simmons located on 1250 S. Rainbow Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89146 for some unique designer furniture. Keep to your color theme or if you are ready to throw out the baby with the bath water and begin again, look at the latest color pallets being offered. The color schemes run on a five-year cycle so it just may surprise you to know you are still ‘trending’ and don’t need to start from scratch.

If you are embarking on a project, large or small, consider your many options. Don’t let the project overwhelm you. A professional can make the project easier, freeing up your time and helping you make your decision-making process fun rather than stressful. If you are worried about cost, that becomes part of the plan. I’ve said this before but working with a professional can save you time and money. Let them do the hard work so you can enjoy the time with those you love. Wishing you many happy hours with your new decade of decorating your palace! With 15 existing residential projects globally and an additional 14 in the pipeline, Rosewood is intent on continuing to grow its residential business with a guest-centric approach, while staying true to the brand's A Sense of Place philosophy. This strategy has been at the core of the brand's remarkable hotel growth and will remain central to the company's ascent as the preferred option in luxury living. Rosewood Residences occupy the most sought-after locations at select Rosewood Hotels & Resorts properties around the world. Perhaps the best-known precursor to today's branded residential lifestyle is The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, located on New York's Upper East Side. Conceived in the 1930s, few hotels have risen to global prominence like The Carlyle, which was known as the "New York White House" during the Kennedy era in the 1960s. Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is building upon the success and heritage of its existing properties through the development of new hotels and residences across the globe. "Approximately 50 percent of Rosewood's pipeline properties have a residential component and we expect this ratio to increase over the coming years," said Karl Bieberach, chief development officer for Rosewood Hotel Group. www.HighRiseLife.com
In its continued efforts to deliver innovative and amazing experiences, Lexus unveiled its "Lexus Electrified" vision for an upcoming generation of electrified vehicles. Headlining this moment was the debut of the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept, which made its world premiere at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019. Since the brand's creation in 1989, Lexus has endeavored to deliver to its customers innovative and amazing product and brand experiences that stimulate the five senses. Since the launch of the RX 400h in 2005, Lexus has led the world as a pioneer in electrification technologies such as the two-stage reduction gear and the multi-stage hybrid system which leverage technology to offer excellent performance and the direct driving sensation characteristic of Lexus Hybrid vehicles. The "Lexus Electrified" vision unveiled today targets a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment -- even as mobility within our society continues to change with autonomous driving and vehicle electrification. Evoking the original fun of driving, Lexus is developing new advanced posture control and other electrification technologies to further evolve driving pleasure, and to fundamentally transform the essence of luxury vehicles of the future. Towards this February 2020
end, Lexus is drawing on the lessons learned developing the core technologies found in Lexus' popular range of gasoline-electric hybrids, including battery management, power control modules, and electric motors. In particular, the technology of Lexus Electrified enables integrated control of powertrain, steering, suspension, and brakes, realizing the ultimate potential of the motor control technology cultivated in HV. With this technology, we can control the driving force to provide ideal vehicle posture according to each driving situation. Lexus endeavors to continue providing enjoyable and safer driving vehicles. To advance this goal, Lexus plans to unveil its first BEV in November 2019 –broadening its response to the needs of various regions around the world, including the development
of HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and FCEVs. Moving forward after that, Lexus plans to expand its electrified vehicle lineup – launching its first PHEV and a new dedicated BEV platform early in the coming decade. By 2025, Lexus will have available electrified versions of all Lexus vehicle models, and we are aiming for the sales of electrified vehicle models to outpace those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicle models.
Lexus LF-30 Electrified highlights The LF-30 Electrified concept vehicle embodies the "Lexus Electrified" vision. For its exterior styling the advanced image expected of a BEV has been channeled into artistic qualities that result in a futuristic form, and an interior that assertively weaves in autonomous driving and other
31
new technologies aims to manifest Lexus' distinctive worldview. Performance is rooted in Lexus Electrified components, adding Lexus' latest technology to its leadership in development of HEV systems. Precise electric motor control enables instantaneous adjustments to posture not possible with conventional vehicles. Furthermore, the LF-30 Electrified employs numerous advanced technologies with a look ahead to the year 2030- such as a new-concept cockpit based on a human-centered design philosophy and a steer-by-wire system. In taking up the challenge of expressing a new design that could only be achieved with a BEV powered by in-wheel electric motors, Lexus visually articulated the LF-30 Electrified's unique energy flow. The vehicle form is meant to visually express the energy created by the wheels set at the corners of the vehicle body streaming toward the vehicle cabin and past the driver to directly flow onto the road surface. Taking advantage of a hoodless vehicle shape made possible by being a BEV, Lexus' signature "spindle" form has been further evolved to span the entire vehicle architecture. The window glass, which continually stretches from the front to rear, the muscular fenders, and the wing shaped headlights form the contours of the Lexus iconic spindle. The shape of the body is fashioned with an elegantly flowing front which transitions into a linear and sharp rear. In addition to the wing-shaped headlights, the sharpness of the rear lights and side air intakes combine to achieve both excellent aerodynamics and cooling performance, resulting in styling fused with function. The opacity of the side windows can be freely adjusted, providing occupants with expansive views of the surrounding scenery and a high level of privacy at night and in other situations. The color of the front face of the vehicle and luminescence patterns help identify from the outside whether the vehicle is being operated in its normal mode or in its autonomous driving mode, reflecting Lexus' pursuit of both a high level of styling and functionality. The exterior color 'voltaic sky' employs a leading-edge metal-infused coating to achieve a unique quality tinted by a touch of blue green. To manifest in a higher dimension Lexus' fundamental human-centered philosophy, the cockpit was designed based on the new Lexus concept of "Tazuna." Inspired by how a single rein can be used to achieve mutual understanding between horse and rider, the steering controller-mounted switches and head-up display have been coordinated to a high degree, creating a space that enables the driver to focus on driving while controlling various functions, such as the navigation and audio system and driving-mode

selection, without having to shift one's vision or operate manual switches. As an indication of the future image of a Tazuna cockpit, the LF-30 Electrified employs next-generation interfaces, such as gesture control and enhanced presentation of vehicle information through AR (augmented reality). The resulting interior is one that provides comfort and convenience for both driver and passengers. With the layout of the front passenger seat echoing that of a first-class seat on an airliner, the interior is one in which a sense of openness and a sense of envelopment coexist. All switches and other controls being comfortably within reach and a gesture-control large-screen display for the passenger seat add to the achievement of interior comfort and convenience. The rear seats use artificial muscle technology to mold to their occupant, and can support various modes such as reclining, relaxation, and alert functions. A Mark Levinson audio system creates a
www.HighRiseLife.com
next-generation listening environment, in which minute speaker control establishes ideal acoustic spaces for music listening pleasure for the driver and each passenger, and speakers built into the headrests not only provide an optimal audio environment but also have a noise-cancelling feature that contributes to enhanced quietness. A glass roof above the rear seats features voice control and a gesture controlled "SkyGate" display window that uses AR to display various types of information, such as a realistic star filled sky, user-favorite videos, and even navigation. In addition to its unique design, the interior also indicates the direction of next-generation luxury by using sustainable materials to reduce environmental burden. Yakisugi (charred cedar), a traditional Japanese material, is used in the floor and steering controller while recycled metal was processed into fibers for use in creating the pleated door trim. This approach expresses Lexus' distinctiveness and innovative spirit. To achieve a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment, the LF-30 employs numerous state-of-the-art technologies even beyond advanced posture control. In-wheel electric motors for each of the vehicle's four wheels and low positioning of the battery enable better handling of inertia and high-level driving performance. Autonomous driving technologies and drone support vehicle technologies look ahead to the year 2030 and the widely expanded value that vehicles can offer. Lexus Advanced Posture Control technology regulates the drive-power output from high-torque electric motors to adjust vehicle posture in tune with human sensibilities. Completely independent control of front and rear drive wheels allows appropriate provision of front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive, depending on the driving situation. Compact and lightweight drive-power units expand freedom in vehicle packaging and are used to enable the driver to enjoy ideal driving, regardless of the road surface or driving conditions. Positioning Lexus Advanced Posture Control technology as a core element of the 'Lexus Electrified' vision, Lexus intends to widely apply this technology throughout its lineup of electrified vehicles. The steer-by-wire system eliminates a mechanical connection to allow more flexible turning control depending on driving
conditions, and a more precise steering feel aligned with the driver's intention. It also contributes to a greater sense of openness by allowing the steering controller can be shifted forward and out of the way during autonomous driving. As a next-generation BEV, LF-30 uses wireless charging technology to simplify daily charging, and AI-based energy management to enable optimal distribution of electric power to both the vehicle and the home, and charging control coordinated with the user's daily schedule. Onboard AI distinguishes the voices of vehicle occupants, and uses personalized information stored on the driver's control key to serve as a partner. It facilitates the adjustment of elements of the interior environment, such as air temperature and audio, and the setting of navigation routes and destinations, while also making proposals for activities after arrival. It also understands the driver's preferences and helps them control the suspension and powertrain settings in real-time according to the driving scene. The LF-30 Electrified also carries the 'Lexus Airporter' drone-technology support vehicle. Using autonomous control, the Lexus Airporter is capable of such tasks as independently transporting baggage from a household doorstep to the vehicle's luggage area. Based on the latest autonomous driving technology concept of 'Lexus Teammate', the LF-30 Electrified features advanced driving support functions in the form of a Chauffeur mode and a Guardian mode. Occupants can enjoy both comfort and peace of mind during autonomous driving with advanced posture control technology being employed. Furthermore, a self-parking function and a front-door pickup function in which the LF-30 Electrified autonomously moves from driveway to doorstep provide an especially high level of convenience. In addition to the LF-30 Electrified exhibition, the Lexus booth at Tokyo Motor Show will contain "Lexus Senses theatre," a space where people can experience the "stimulation of the five senses." It consists of two experience spaces, audio and visual. In Theater 1, the sensual engine sound of Lexus LFA stimulates hearing with 360° 3D sound. Theater 2 offers a visually stimulating experience with the Lexus LC model by projection mapping - which changes its appearance according to the time of day and the viewing angle. In this booth layout you can appreciate the Lexus philosophy, while enjoying sensory stimulation through "real experience."

FZ Capital Group is pleased to announce a record-breaking deal at its luxury development, 88&90 Lex, a "happy coupling" of two distinct buildings in the heart of NoMad: one an art deco classic and the other a sleek and modern tower. A contract has been signed for the last Penthouse in 90 Lex, Penthouse A. Originally listed for $11M, the Penthouse sale would become the most expensive sale on Lexington Avenue in history. "We are pleased to announce the sale of our last Penthouse in 90 Lex," said Ziel Feldman, Chairman and Founder of HFZ Capital Group. Located inside 90 Lex, Penthouse A is a sprawling four bedroom, four-and-a-half bath corner residence that redefines urban indoor and outdoor living. As the building's crown jewel, newly constructed Penthouse A crowns the top of 90 Lex's existing structure and comprises an expansive layout framing a gracious, 38' x 18' private courtyard. With interiors by acclaimed architecture firm Workshop/APD, Penthouse A includes an open kitchen that cohesively flows into the living/dining room. 88&90 Lex was reimagined to seamlessly reflect the intersection of two distinct eras and architectural styles – the pre-war and the post-war – from 1927 to 1958. 88 Lex features high ceilings and gallery-inspired art walls, while 90 Lex presents graciously scaled living areas, and clean lines that accentuate the floor-to-ceiling windows. REAL ESTATE | MARKET TRENDS
2020 Begins with Lowest Housing Inventory inTwo Years Price Growth is Accelerating Faster Than National Average in Markets with The Largest Inventory Declines - Inventory across the U.S. declined by 12 percent year-over-year in December - The December U.S. median listing price was $299,950, up 3 percent year-over-year - Nationally, homes sold in 79 days in December, two days more quickly than last year

December saw the largest year-over-year decline of housing inventory in almost three years with a dramatic 12 percent decline, pushing the number of homes for sale in the U.S. to the lowest level since January 2018 according to the December 2019 Housing Trends report released today by realtor.com. Based on realtor.com's analysis, the inventory decline is accelerating across all price levels, including the luxury market. In December, inventory of homes priced under $200,000 declined by 18.1 percent year-over-year, higher than the 16.5 percent drop in November. Mid-tier housing priced between $200,000 and $750,000 also declined at an accelerated pace, up 10.2 percent year-over-year compared to November's decline of 7.4 percent. Listings of homes priced over $1 million shrunk by 4.4 percent year-over-year, up from nearly 2 percent in November. "The market is struggling with a large housing undersupply just as 4.8 million millennials are reaching 30-years of age in 2020, a prime age for many to purchase their first home," according to realtor.com Senior Economist, George Ratiu. "The significant inventory drop we saw in December is a harbinger of the continuing imbalance expected to plague this year's markets, as the number of homes for sale are poised to reach historically low levels." The inventory shortage gripping the U.S. housing market is showing no signs of slowing anytime soon. December's 12 percent year-over-year inventory decline is an acceleration from November's drop of 9.5 percent and equates to a loss of nearly 155,000 listings compared to December 2018. Additionally, new listings are failing to restore
February 2020
the market to equilibrium as the volume of newly listed properties also declined by 11.2 percent year-over-year. On a local level, the tech havens of San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.; Seattle-Tacoma Bellevue, Wash; and San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif. all saw inventory declines of more than 30 percent in December as well as listing price growth above the national median. Only three of the 50 largest U.S. metros saw inventory increase over the year: San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas (+8.8 percent); Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.-Wis. (+7.4 percent); and Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nev. (+4.8 percent), which all had year-over-year declines in their median listing prices. Overall, the median U.S. listing price grew by 3 percent, to $299,950 in December, which is a deceleration compared to last month, when the median listing price grew by 3.6 percent over the year. At the same time, price growth is continuing to heat up in metros where inventory declines were greatest in December. Of the 50 largest U.S. metros, 42 saw year-over-year gains in median listing prices, with 33 of the 50 growing faster than the national rate and 12 of those growing faster than December 2017's rate of 8.2 percent. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif. (+21.0 percent); Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, Pa.-N.J.-Del.-Md. (+13.1 percent); and Birmingham-Hoover, Ala. (+11.1 percent); posted the highest year-over-year median list price growth in December. All three markets also saw double-digit declines in their housing inventories. The steepest price declines were seen in Louisville/Jefferson County, Ky.-Ind. (-5.0 percent); Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.-Wis. (-4.1 percent); and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland, Texas (-2.9 percent). In December, 13.2 percent of active listings saw their listing prices reduced, virtually unchanged from a year ago. Among the nation's 50 largest metros, 15 saw an increase in their share of price reductions compared to this time last year. Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Ore.-Wash. saw the greatest increase in the share of price reductions in November, up 14.7 percent year-over-year. It was followed by Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, Ind. (+3.1 percent) and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland, Texas (+2.6 percent). Nationally, homes sold in 79 days in December 2019, two days more quickly than December 2018. However, in the 50 largest U.S. metros, the typical home sold at a nearly identical pace. Raleigh, N.C.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Rochester, N.Y.; saw the largest decreases in days on market with properties spending 13, 11, and 8 fewer days on the market than last year, respectively. Meanwhile, properties in Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif.; Buffalo Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Mass.-N.H.; sold 22, 10, and 9 days more slowly, respectively.

that inner exploration and respect for nature and community is key to bringing people together to create meaningful change. The resort is a place where visitors can seek personal growth through the property's curated rituals and deep connecting ceremonies. One of the jewels of the experience is the Architects of Life program led by the in-house Shaman Balder. Alongside hand-selected visiting teachers and guides, Balder will lead guests through rituals such as cacao ceremonies, yoga, multi vibrational sound healing,

meditation, plant ceremonies, and ancient practices that inspire reflection, exploration, and connection. The resort will also feature a Rituals of Sound program that pays homage to the music environment of Tulum and Mykonos, but in a more exclusive relaxed setting available only to guests. Palmaïa will become a stage for creative experimental musicians who will transport guests through curated deep beats, and deep-fusion electronic music with acoustic overlays. These music rituals will take place in various forms daily from 4 p.m. until midnight allowing all ages to enjoy some conscious fun. "There is a growing community of unconventional thinkers and spiritual seekers that gather in small communities around the world to embrace creativity, music and the environment. Together we are creating a new modern collective consciousness," said Ferri. "Palmaïa was designed to be one of these gathering points, and currently the only natural, forward thinking beach enclave of its kind. A safe place where we can create positive change within the boundaries of modern society." Perfectly matched to its surroundings of the Caribbean Sea and jungle, Palmaïa offers travelers all oceanfront suites, each with its own private terrace for views of the Caribbean ocean in seven distinctive layouts. They include suites for families with bunk-bedding for children as well as open plan suites for adults, suites with swim-out access to one of the hotel's four infinity pools; and suites nestled among the ocean-side jungle - all designed sustainably and without the use of animal products. A Nomadic Guide will be assigned to each traveler to attend to guests needs throughout the stay, and for parents, Palmaïa operates the only holistic fun children's activities program in hospitality run by certified Waldorf Educators. While on property, guests can dine from a selection of four restaurants along with a rotating food truck, each serving ethically sourced food from trusted farms and fisheries around Mexico. Executive Chef Eugenio Villafaña, who has trained at
numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, oversees the culinary programming. This includes creating parallel plant-based menus for each dining venue, a unique culinary offering in Riviera Maya and throughout the hospitality industry. Leading the plant-based dining programming is Noma alumni, Mauricio Alvarez. The signature fine-dining restaurant LEK serves gastronomic Mexican; Mar de Olivio is a destination for redefined Mediterranean cuisine; and the Oriental-fusion restaurant Ume merges Thai and Continental cuisines for à la carte dinner experiences highlighting sensual fragrances, exotic flavors, and densely rich hues. Su Casa, an integrated beach bar and restaurant on the dunes offers a laid-back Caribbean beach ambiance, with toes-in-the-sand comforts while El Caminante, offers an authentic food truck experience with a daily rotating menu. Eolo Beach Club plays beats by visiting sound artists, two pool bars serve fresh fruit cocktails and custom creations based on guests' mood, and the exclusive Atlas Club creates libations late into the night and houses a Health Café where guests can relax in a more modern city loft environment while sipping matcha lattes and snacking on avo-toasts. The resort also includes a jungle spa, Atlantis, where ancient ceremonies like the storied Temazcal are included in the menu of services. At Atlantis, one is guided by the Book of the Nine Paths to Health, designed to treat emotions as root causes rather than physical pain. Treatment rooms feature floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the foliage and are immersed between natural cenotes used for rituals and meditation. The fitness center is also hidden in the jungle. Guided by the philosophy that personal growth is the path to connect with Nature, Palmaïa was conceptualized without disturbing the original landscape of nature. The resort was designed with sustainability in mind and strives to become one of the first true carbon-neutral properties in the world in 2021 by compensating the energy Palmaïa uses by building solar panels on the resort and in other parts of Mexico. Additionally, guests will not find plastic water bottles on property and all bathroom amenities will be refillable and made with 100% biodegradable ingredients and essential oils. Part of the charm of the day’s celebrations is in giving family and friends flavorful foods to enjoy from chocolates and candies to other sugary treats. However, the festivities don’t have to be completely focused on unhealthy bites in order to make someone feel special. 5th & Sky Rooftop Gardens & Lounge Delights Atop Downtown San Diego Written by Merilee Kern, ‘The Luxe List’ Executive Editor
Photos Courtesy of 5th & Sky Rooftop Gardens & Lounge
Often when I’m out-and-about in downtown San Diego’s famed Gaslamp Quarter, I’m indelibly drawn to Theatre Box—a 73,000-square-foot luxury theatre, dining and entertainment complex encompassing one full city block. This collab between TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, and the Sugar Factory (with locations nationwide) has been epic. It not only launched TCL Chinese Theatre’s first luxury dine-in cinema, but also what’s become a hugely popular Sugar Factory confections, retail, gelato bar and café; the Sugar Factory American Brasserie eatery; and a sexy Chocolate Lounge where decadence reigns supreme. It’s no
52
surprise that celebs like Val Kilmer, Pitbull, Nick Cannon, Scott Disick, Sofia Richie, Evan Ross, Ashlee Simpson and Faithe Herman have famously spent time at the locale. Now adding to the allure of this downtown playground is 5th & Sky Rooftop Gardens & Lounge, a stylish rooftop restaurant and bar that debuted in August 2019. Offering elevated cocktails and crave-worthy cuisine in a lush, Japanese-style, open-air garden setting, at 5th & Sky you’ll be treated to spectacular views of downtown San Diego as well as the Coronado Bridge. It’s a fabulous place to eat, imbibe and socialize
www.HighRiseLife.com
under the stars. Various firepits warming the patio-style seating, an ever-buzzing sushi bar and a hand-painted mural by artist Kahori Maki further sets the mood of this venue’s chic communal space, where you’re likely to leave having more friends in your social circle than when you arrived. Given the Japanese orientation of the eatery, fresh sushi selections are the star of the show. Options unsurprisingly include the Gaslamp Roll, filled with crab, avocado and asparagus, topped with smoked filet mignon, avocado mousse, crispy shallots and unagi sauce. Other creative sushi selections include the Smoker Roll—a filling of cream cheese, avocado and smoked salmon topped with nori, smoked unagi and toasted sesame seeds; and the Gaudy Roll—a nori-filled delight with crab and cucumber, topped with ahi tuna, salmon, Hamachi and avocado. The sharing-friendly menu also boasts a bevy of signature small plates from the kitchen, many of which I’ve also personally sampled and savored. My favorites include the pork belly and citrus-marinated yellow watermelon pops with jalapeño-maple syrup; and the Hawaiian Bigeye tuna poke with mango, cucumber, seaweed cracker and house shoyu sauce atop sushi rice. Both had a decent amount of pepper-driven heat for those who like to keep it spicy. Also, a huge hit were the green shrimp ceviche mini tostadas topped with a generous portion of citrus-marinated shrimp, cucumber, cilantro, red onion, serrano pepper and a lime avocado mousse. From the land, my personal fav is the piquant BBQ short rib sliders with apple chipotle slaw—a plate of three savory samples you’ll surely long for later on. Had I any room to spare, I would have indulged in the white cheddar lobster mac and cheese—a dish rife with fresh lobster ensconced in a blend of white cheddar and fontina cooked in a creamy sauce. The food at 5th & Sky is certainly rivaled by its beverage program, which includes both traditional and some over-the-top cocktails all complemented by a curated wine list and local craft beer. Signature drinks to wet your whistle include the lychee martini, a combination of Belvedere vodka, yuzu, lychee and black cherry; spicy tamarind margarita, made with Don Julio Blanco tequila, tamarind vodka and lemon with Tajín rim; Oaxacan on Sunshine, a combination of Pierde Almas mezcal, Aperol, lemon and agave; and Double Black Smash, made with whisky, oranges, fresh berries and basil; among others.
The locale is open Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Happy hour is offered from 4 to 6 p.m. daily, with half-priced cocktails and select appetizers. 5th & Sky also sets the mood for late-night energy, offering bottle service packages and often hosting various live DJs to keep the nightlife kicked into high gear. In all, 5th & Sky is a lovely addition to downtown San Diego—an elevated alfresco restaurant and bar experience offering an intimate setting to relax, mix and mingle amid the picturesque San Diego skyline.

the glamorous supper club world of yesteryear when music and cuisine intertwined in an all-night destination. Through a multi-act production by No Ceilings Entertainment and its creative team, The Mayfair defies typical dinner service with not only live music, but immersive, full-scale productions on stage and throughout the restaurant that make guests feel the show all around them. "Supper clubs of the mid-1900s were the foundation for our country's best artists and cuisine, which The Mayfair celebrates and modernizes for the 20s of today," said MGM Resorts International President of Events and Nightlife Sean Christie. "Combined with spectacular entertainment overlooking unrivaled views of the Bellagio Fountains, The Mayfair delivers an experience that can't be found anywhere else in the world." The stunning space by London and New York-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studios draws inspiration from the whirlwind glamour of old Vegas and Hollywood, and The Mayfair's waterfront locale. Guests are brought into a world inspired by mythology and tales of Neptune with elements such as a statement bar with a sea-green Murano glass canopy, coral-inspired wall lights, scalloped-edge banquettes, and a ceramic shell wall. Textures and colors are richly layered to create a decadent and sophisticated backdrop for an evening of dining and dancing. February 2020
•Menu. Indulgent appetizers kick off the night starting with the Wagyu Handroll with Caviar layered with horseradish cream, tonkatsu sauce and a glittering gold leaf. Headlining the evening are quintessential American entrees prepared tableside like the Mishima Farms Wagyu Prime Rib, which is slow roasted for seven hours. The Mayfair's curtain call features whimsical delights and visual extravaganzas exemplified by The CIGAR, an edible chocolate and hazelnut cigar showpiece that arrives hickory-smoked under a glass cloche. •Cocktails. The Mayfair introduces theatricality to American paradigm cocktails such as the Lemon Drop, topped with a citrus bubble that pops and releases scents enhancing the flavors of the drink. Additionally, four champagne cocktails are served with a split of Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne to keep the libation flowing, such as the Julep made with Hennessy VSOP, apple cider syrup, burnt cinnamon and mint. •Nightly Entertainment. Entertainment evolves throughout the evening and the week to deliver new experiences for guests each time they visit. Dinner service begins with a world-class pianist filling the venue. As the sun sets, the energy rises with performances reminiscent of the showroom era of Las Vegas entertainment. The Mayfair's lead vocalists transport guests back through history with a multi-piece band to dazzle diners. As the evening continues, The Mayfair explodes with performances that immerse guests in the rule-breaking era of prohibition supper clubs with every performer, bartender and waiter joining the production. •Mayfair After Dark (Friday-Saturday from 11 p.m. – 3 a.m.). As the curtains close on traditional dinner hours, the vibe shifts for a fresh take on Las Vegas nightlife. Live musical acts and performances illuminate the evening for an all-night dance party. A late-night dinner menu featuring a variety of delicious offerings from steak and sushi to salads and desserts is available until 2 a.m. •Jazz Sundays. Every Sunday night, the Jazz Age reigns supreme. During Jazz Sundays, The Mayfair's band and vocalists serenade the dining room with original versions from the Great American Songbook, perfectly paired with the restaurant's contemporary take on American classic cuisine. •Creative Team. Renowned Artist Carol Bove Installs Sculptures on Claremont McKenna College Campus Four sculptures from the internationally renowned artist Carol Bove was unveiled the week of January 13 just outside Collins Dining Hall as the latest addition to Claremont McKenna College's distinguished public art collection. The sculptures—two created for Claremont McKenna and two previously exhibited to great acclaim in New York and Leeds, England—are a mixture of found metal, steel beams, petrified wood, and painted and polished stainless-steel tubing. Together they comprise Bove's most extensive permanent public installation to date. "We are getting to a critical mass of public art," said Trustee Christopher Walker '69, chair of Claremont McKenna's Public Art Committee, who commissioned and funded the Bove sculptures on the Claremont McKenna campus. Bove's sculptures will join three other works installed in recent years to create a diagonal swath of significant public art on the Claremont McKenna campus: • an imposing painted and neon tube abstract mural by Mary Weatherford (b. 1963), titled "From the Mountain to the Sea," in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum; • an untitled 40-foot white-painted stainless-steel totem between Appleby and Phillips Halls, one of the last works created by celebrated artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015); • and "Meet in the Middle," a sculpture of streetlights and benches in front of Roberts Pavilion, created by the conceptual artist Chris Burden (1945-2015). The Bove sculptures were chosen by an art advisory panel of Trustees and prominent curators after reviewing proposals of four noteworthy artists. Each artist visited campus in the spring and summer of 2018 and selected a site for a proposed work, then submitted a formal presentation to the art advisory panel. Bove "instantly loved the site" on the quad outside Collins Dining Hall, Walker recalled, "among the four proposals, each on its own unique and creative, the panel was clearly drawn to Carol's creative vision for the Claremont McKenna campus, voting unanimously for its approval." Walker, an avid art collector who has donated and loaned many pieces to Claremont McKenna, praised President Hiram E. Chodosh for his enthusiastic support. "Hiram is a true visionary and appreciates how art makes a campus special," he said.

Chodosh said the Bove sculptures "unleash the power to disrupt and inspire our engagement with the physical environment in which we live and learn." Walker, who has served on the Boards of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) owns art by three of the four artists who made presentations, he has a Bove piece, "Cutting Corners," inside his Los Angeles home. He had previously met Bove at art fairs, and in summer 2018 saw her exhibition at the David Zwirner gallery in London. "It is the right moment in her career to have her first big public art commission in the heart of the campus," Walker said. Although Bove has two sculptures installed at the sculpture park at The Contemporary Austin in Texas—and has had several outdoor exhibitions, including on New York City's High Line—the Claremont McKenna sculptures are only her second public installation on the West Coast (the other is a white, looping, steel sculpture, titled "IO," commissioned by the city of Beverly Hills). Philipp Kaiser, a well-known curator and the chief executive director of artists and programs at Marian Goodman Galleries in New York, Paris, and London, acted as a consultant to the committee. A former distinguished fellow in the humanities at Claremont McKenna, Kaiser has been following Bove's work for more than 15 years as he served on exhibition juries. He has seen her go through different creative phases. "She's a remarkable artist," Kaiser said. He calls her large-scale pieces "both sensual and refined" and said that they make a bold claim for autonomous sculpture but are at the same time relational and talk to each other. "It's sculpture about sculpture."
neighborhood of Los Angeles. Owner Chris Grant has worked with Bove for five years. Standard Sculpture also is modifying the other three sculptures, which have previously been exhibited elsewhere, with new metal components to connect to footings for their permanent installation at Claremont McKenna. The four sculptures to be installed beginning on January 13 and over the course of three days, with the artist present on the initial day, are: • "The Enigma of Pleasure" (2019). Made for Claremont McKenna, this work includes scrap metal left in its rusted state, folded and crushed steel that has been painted orange, and a highly polished black steel disc. It is 80-inches high by 74-inches long and 46-inches wide. • "Cretaceous" (2014). A second sculpture made from rusted mild (low carbon) steel and ancient petrified wood, this work was first shown in a joint Carol Bove/Carlo Scarpa exhibition that opened at the Museion Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Italy, in 2014. • "Lingam" (2015). Made of steel I-beams and 16-million-year old petrified wood, this installation was first exhibited in 2015 at David Zwirner in London as part of the artist's solo presentation The Plastic Unit. • "Four Loops" (2019). This white, looping tubular glyph was created for CLAREMONT MCKENNA. Measuring 267-inches long by 79-inches high and 34-inches wide, the loops will appear to float in space. They are constructed from 8-inch diameter stainless-steel pipes that are bent by multiple tons of hydraulic force. The raw steel is coated with many layers of sealant and liquid urethane and has been sanded and polished to a mirror reflective surface.
Bove's recent sculptures to be installed at Claremont McKenna incorporate both found metal, gleaned from shipyards and scrap yards, and manipulated stainless steel tubing. Some of the tubing is crushed or folded, then painted, resulting in what critics describe as an almost fabric or clay-like appearance.
A catalog about the Bove sculptures at Claremont McKenna will be published in spring 2020, featuring an essay written by professor and chair of UCLA's art history department Miwon Kwon and a conversation between the artist and Philipp Kaiser. Similar catalogs were published at the time of the Ellsworth Kelly, Chris Burden, and Mary Weatherford installations. The Kelly and Burden sculptures were donations from Trustee George Roberts '66, P '93. The Weatherford mural was acquired for the College by a group of trustees on the Public Art Committee in 2014.
Her looping, tubular pieces are part of a family of sculptures that Bove calls "glyphs" (a glyph is a hieroglyphic character or symbol.)
Walker summed up the committee's philosophy concerning public art acquisitions for Claremont McKenna.
In the catalog published for Bove's 2016 exhibition Polka Dots, arts scholar and curator Johanna Burton describes Bove's work this way:
"We're not going to have a museum. We're not going to have a sculpture garden," he said. "These sculptures along with other present and future public art loans, gifts, and acquisitions throughout the campus are going to be part of the academic life at Claremont McKenna." To that end, Walker said, confetti seating will be installed near the Bove installation next summer so that students can contemplate the sculptures at length.
"The raw, found steel tends toward the lyrical in the way only things made by chance can be in an effort to destroy or minimize massive lengths of junk steel, tools that compress or shred can lead to aesthetic results. Finally, the modified square tubes, prodded into shapes with a custom hydraulic press, are often dressed in paint that so fully melds with the metal as to look like its skin." One of the four sculptures that are to be installed were engineered and fabricated at Standard Sculpture in the Glassell Park
February 2020
"Chris Walker's extraordinary generosity and leadership and Carol Bove's vision and brilliant creativity join here to put the public arts in the heart of the liberal arts at Claremont McKenna," said Chodosh.
