I
f March seems to be a bridge month between the long days of winter and the coming trees and flowers of spring, that’s because it is. It is also the perfect time for you to go through your home, get rid of things you meant to toss before the holidays and plan for this year’s decorating mission. The stores are on fire with season end sales, just waiting for you to come in and find your treasures. If you’re an online shopper, you will be delighted to see all the huge sales being offered by Way Fair, eBay and others. Some stores in your local area also offer special discounts if you see what you want online and come in to see and try the item on for size in their store. Don’t miss out on these great bargains! So, what color do you want to paint your house this year? Remember what I’ve said for the past three years. Color spices up our interiors and can be changed. Don’t get stuck in a rut just because you painted your rooms in last year’s offerings. If you chose a neutral color for your walls—Great! What do you want to do to accent walls? Take a walk through those stone quarry stores and fall in love with a slab or two. They’re not just for countertops. You can mount them behind the sofa as a great piece of art! Look at one to use behind your bed as a beautiful headboard. If you have a grand entrance, look at one as a possible waterfall wall to welcome your guests into the house. There are so many uses for these slabs. March 2020
Don’t forget the artwork! There are so many great canvasses out there. Look at an oversized piece for a main wall in your living room. You may even take a color in that piece and make that the wall color in that room. Especially shop locally if you are interested in replacing your mattress. The On-line folks offer the convenience of delivery right to your front porch, but a mattress needs to fit. If you are not comfortable on it, there is no return policy on used mattresses. Go try some on, you’d be surprised at how quickly your body will tell you that you have found the right one. Remember, if you are sleeping on clothe mattresses to change them every eight years, even if the mattress has a twenty-year warranty. You should also turn the mattress over every year. During your spring cleaning, dust off your shades and launder your sheers. They collect dust that may not be easily seen but can begin a cycle of sneezing and allergies in the family. We don’t think of being allergic to the air in our homes, but the vents need to be cleaned and new air filters put in at least every six months. Stay healthy out there, enjoy this in between season and happy designing! Carol S Townsend A.S.I.D carolstownsend@gmail.com Look for my latest books, Glitz, Glamour & Murder and the sequel. TCM to Honor Beloved Actress & Comedian Lily Tomlin with Iconic Hand and Footprint Ceremony at TCL ChineseTheatre Celebration to Take Place Friday, April 17, During The 2020 TCM Classic Film Festival Turner Classic Movies (TCM) today announced it will honor iconic actress and comedian Lily Tomlin with a hand and footprint ceremony at the world-famous TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX in Hollywood during the eleventh annual TCM Classic Film Festival on Friday, April 17. Tomlin, a Tony, Grammy, eight-time Emmy and two-time Peabody Award winner, has had a remarkable career starting in the 1960s starring in cinematic classics, television staples and on stage. "Lily Tomlin's talent has endured for fifty years because she knows who she is. She's managed to play broadly drawn roles alongside more nuanced characters without a hint of falseness," said Ben Mankiewicz, TCM primetime anchor and official host of the TCM Classic Film Festival. "Not long ago, Tomlin told The New York Times, 'I wanted people to see the characters as human beings. And see themselves in them, too.' The humanity she finds in the women she plays has enabled her to transition, seemingly with ease, from groundbreaking work on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In to four Emmy nominations for Grace and Frankie, where she co-stars alongside another seminal artist, Jane Fonda. There's a consistent richness to her work, in comedy and drama, as well as on stage in her innovative one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, and on the big screen. Whether your favorite Lily Tomlin performance is The Late Show, or 9 to 5, or Nashville‌wait, I'm not done. Or All of Me, Flirting with Disaster, I Heart Huckabees, or A Prairie Home Companion, you know all of those pictures were made more memorable because Lily Tomlin was among the cast. It's hard to imagine a more deserving artist to have her hand and footprints cemented outside Hollywood's signature classic movie house." This marks the tenth consecutive year TCM has featured a hand and footprint ceremony at the legendary TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX. In 2011, Peter O'Toole was the honoree, followed by Kim

Novak in 2012, Jane Fonda in 2013, Jerry Lewis in 2014, Christopher Plummer in 2015, Francis Ford Coppola in 2016, Carl and Rob Reiner in 2017, Cicely Tyson in 2018, and Billy Crystal in 2019.

TCM Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz will serve as official host of the TCM Classic Film Festival. The festival's official hotel and central gathering point for the 11th consecutive year will be The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which has a longstanding role in movie history and was the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel will also offer special rates for festival attendees. Screenings and events during the festival will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre, the Legion Theater at Hollywood Post 43 and the Cinerama Dome, as well as other Hollywood venues. JASON CERDA
Making an Impact in the Music Industry Written by Jennifer Gonzales
Jason Cerda is an international Latin pop recording artist and choreographer. Highly motivated and self-driven, Cerda has made an impact in the music industry. With unraveling opportunities set before him that has allowed him to perform with artists such as Ludacris, Nelly, J. Balvin, Becky G and many others. His success has enabled him to tour in the US, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala establishing a wide fan base from all over. Jason Cerda also performs at other well-known events in the Latin community such as, The Puerto Rican Day parade, People Espanol Festival in New York, Fiesta DC in Washington DC, Calle Ocho Festival in Miami and Cali Music Festival in Las Vegas, NV. With his newest single “Telefone” that was released in January 2018, being a huge hit, people from all over are anticipating what’s next? Aside, from singing and dancing, you can catch Jason Cerda on the big screen, he was featured in “Onze Jongens in Miami” which was just released in theaters in The Netherlands and will be hitting Netflix soon after. We were able to get together with Jason Cerda for an interview with High Rise Life and here is what he has to say.
Q: Can you give us some insight on who you are and when you experienced your first big break? I’m an international Latin Pop recording artist from Washington D.C. who began my career originally as a back-up dancer and choreographer. However, I made my way into the music business and have been recording music in both English and Spanish for the last 14 years. I have been fortunate enough to have had 3 singles on the Latin Tropical Billboard charts and have performed all across the world including in South America, Japan, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. I would say that breaking the Top 10 on the charts was my “break” because it opened a lot of doors for my career.
Q: What is your creative process like when producing music content? When it comes to making new music it always depends on the producer I’m working with and what the vibe of the song is. Sometimes the lyrics come to me right away, other times I just sit in front of an open mic and let ideas flow out of me until I find something I like. Once I find the flow I like, then I’ll sit and come up with my concept. Most times I like to find my pre-hook and hook before writing the verses, just so I know where I want to go with my story. Sometimes it comes easy and other times I have to step away for a bit and come back to it. Either way, it’s a beautiful process and I love that I get to make music for a living.
March 2020
Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given? I was 18, the same year I began pursuing my music career and at the time I was working a bunch of random jobs just trying to make money to be able to invest in career, when a friend of mine who happened to be a producer as well said something to me that has stuck with me until this day. He told me, “If you really want to take this seriously, surround yourself with music at all times. Get a job that allows you to be around music and always listening to new ideas. Find something that will have you always wanting to be inspired and creative.” The next day I went to my job at Footlocker, gave my two-week notice and began my journey as a choreographer and dance teacher and never looked back. I was around music 24/7 and most importantly doing something I loved to do just as much as singing.
21
Q: What do you enjoy most about being an artist/entertainer? I think what I enjoy the best about being artist, entertainer is that I get to connect with people on so many levels. Music is the one thing that brings people together no matter what language you speak, or what race you are. So, if I can make something that will connect with someone, AND I can make them dance at the same time then that is the most satisfying feeling.
Q: If you had the opportunity to collaborate with any artist who would it be and why? I think at this moment in time, my ideal collaboration would be with Drake. Not only is he one of the best artists in the world right now, but now he’s working with many Latin artists and making great music. I think we could make some really good music together, and I most definitely would make him do some choreography in the music video!
Q: Who are some of the artists you have had the opportunity to open for? I’ve been fortunate enough to open for so many bigtime artists in the industry over the span of my career. Some of my favorites are J. Balvin, Maluma, Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Farruko, Ricky Martin, T-Pain, T.I., Ne-Yo, Wisin y Yandel, Pitbull, and J.Lo.
Q: What do you feel is the best song ever released and why? That’s a very tough questions because I have many favorite songs for many different reasons. My all-time favorite song has to be “You Make Me Wanna” by Usher. To me, it was one of the best produced and lyrically written songs Usher every made. The music video was also very unique and did the song justice. As far as more recent music, I would have to go with Bruno Mars “Please Me”. To me it’s one of the most well written songs, and the melody arrangements are timeless. Not to mention it brings back the feeling of the 90’s.
Q: Aside from music, what are some other things that you are involved with? Over the last year I entered a new business venture that I’m very proud of. I officially opened my own dance studio in my hometown of Alexandria, Virginia. It’s a drop-in based facility where we offer more than 20+ styles of dance and fitness classes. This year in 2020, we are expanding the studio and taking it on the road by starting our first ever “Cerdafied Pop Up Experience” with our first stop being in the beautiful 305 on April 25th.
Q: How do you incorporate balance between both? I’m lucky enough to have an amazing business partner that holds it down for me while I’m traveling doing all of my music projects, as well as an awesome staff that carries out and executes my vision for the studio while I’m not there. It’s still very challenging to manage both, but I’m lucky enough to have a great team behind me.
22
Q: What’s next? Many exciting things! A movie that I was featured in “Onze Jongens in Miami” just released in theaters in The Netherlands and will be hitting Netflix soon after. Also, I will be releasing new music and touring. Lots of exciting things happening for sure. Looking forward to what 2020 has in store for me. All I know is that I’m going to embrace every blessing and tackle every obstacle with a smile on my face. About Jennifer Gonzales J.M. Gonzales has a strong passion for writing. Klarna is The Ring-Bearer as Lady Gaga Says Yes… to Herself Her ring of choice was the 'Knight Finger' ring created by fashion activist B. Åkerlund for Klarna. In the ultimate act of female empowerment, pop phenomenon Lady Gaga has put a ring on her own finger to celebrate that we are all free to propose to anyone at any time. The 'Knight Finger' ring was recently launched by Klarna, together with fashion activist Bea Åkerlund, to give the finger to outdated traditions. This year is a leap year - when tradition says it is acceptable for women to propose to their partner on February 29. Klarna believes that everyone should get what they love, and not have their decisions dictated by rules or outdated traditions. Lady Gaga responded to Klarna's message of empowerment by saying 'yes' to herself with her 180 million followers on social media as witness. In an exclusive comment for Klarna, Lady Gaga explains: "For my entire career, I've taken pride in using my voice to stand up for what I believe is right. So, I am excited to work with my
28
friend B. and Klarna to celebrate how far we've come as a culture and call out the work we need to continue to do. The idea that a woman can only propose to a man one day every four years is so completely ridiculous! Anyone who knows me knows that I believe any person of any gender identity should be able to express any act of love to anyone else on ANY day of ANY year. So, in an act of defiance of this outdated tradition, I decided to say yes to MYSELF! And wear this ring today with pride to remind myself and everyone that the only permission you need to love comes from within you" Klarna CMO, David Sandström on Lady Gaga's announcement: "Just like Lady Gaga, we at Klarna believe that if traditions go unchallenged, the status quo prevails. Why should we settle and conform to societal and industry expectations just because? The Knight's Finger ring was created as a symbol to enable everyone to express love on their terms to whom they wish, just like our millions of shoppers can get what they love every day with Klarna" For more information, please visit klarna.com. www.HighRiseLife.com

• Automobili Pininfarina to mark the 90th anniversary of the Pininfarina design house with a special vehicle unveiling at Geneva International Motor Show 2020 Automobili Pininfarina has made a fast start into 2020, the 90th anniversary year of Pininfarina SpA, commencing the testing and development phase for the ground-breaking Battista – the world's first fully electric luxury hypercar. www.HighRiseLife.com
Pininfarina Battista The Battista's technical development schedule is headed by Automobili Pininfarina Sportscar Director Rene Wollmann, formerly of Mercedes-AMG. In the driving seat of Battista, prototype vehicles will be former Formula One and Formula E legend Nick Heidfeld, now a Development Driver and Ambassador for the Italian luxury car marque. Rene Wollmann commented: "The mule vehicles running the chassis and powertrain concepts for Battista have already achieved 80 per cent of their performance capability without issue. This means that our EV performance is already equal to the most powerful combustion engine-powered hyper car currently in the world. And in the simulation and wind tunnel testing phase, by fine-tuning the aero packaging, we've already seen a significant increase in the potential range of Battista versus our original prediction. "In the next six months we will progress to delivering a thrilling pure-electric hyper car that seamlessly produces 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque across a range of driving modes to suit varying environments. Our clients cannot wait to experience this performance alongside Nick Heidfeld." Automobili Pininfarina's teams of engineers will now undertake a rapid development program of exhaustive testing, evaluation and development over the coming months, in the climates and environments that the Battista will be driven in, that culminates with the first hand-crafted Battistas being handed over to clients at the end of 2020 in Cambiano, Italy. The Automobili Pininfarina Design Team, led by Chief Design Officer Luca Borgogno, has also created a unique livery for Battista prototypes, seen for the first time on the new hypercar as its technical development program accelerates into 2020. Luca Borgogno said: "We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response to the aesthetics of Battista since it was first revealed. So, we have chosen to create a playful and interesting
March 2020
prototype livery design that is clearly inspired by the electrifying performance that lies beneath its beautiful exterior. "Yet our ambition is always to further delight our future clients. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the famous Pininfarina design house, the team at Automobili Pininfarina is now preparing the ultimate expression of Battista hyper car design, ready for its world premiere at next month's Geneva International Motor Show." obe Bryant, 41, was an American former professional basketball player. Originally born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kobe Bryant was the youngest of three. Growing up, Kobe learned to become adaptable to his surroundings by embracing his father’s travels throughout his retirement. After his father left the NBA to play basketball professionally in Italy, Kobe took it upon himself to learn how to speak Italian fluently. Although basketball was where his passion truly lied, Kobe was a trait of multiple talents. He enjoyed playing soccer, playing the piano, and was considered one of the most well-spoken players in all professional sports, his retirement speech was a great example of what a gifted writer he truly was.
"Be willing to sacrifice everything, but compromise nothing in your quest to be the best." Kobe Bryant

Kobe was a great businessman and had a keen eye for things that others didn’t. Back in 2014, during an interview he had with ESPN Kobe announced the opening of Kobe Inc. which he had stated that the company’s mission was to own and grow brands that challenge and redefine the sports industry, while inspiring the world. Along side of that he wrote children’s books and had released The Wizenard Series: Training Camp. Bryant won an Oscar for “Dear Basketball” the Best Animated Short Film at the 2018 Academy Awards. Kobe Bryant’s 20-year love and commitment for basketball was truly inspiring. Aside from his father Joe Bryant who also played for the Las Angeles Lakers, Kobe started playing basketball at the age of three and had considered the Las Angeles Lakers basketball team to be his favorite team to watch. Bryant entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) directly from Lower Merion High School. He was selected originally by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick of the 1996 NBA draft and then was traded for the Los Angeles Lakers. He became the youngest player to reach 30,000 career points, won 5 NBA championships, 18 time All-Star and two-time NBA finals MVP winner, these are just to highlight a few of his accomplishments throughout his career. Kobe Bryant was a role model to many people world-wide including his family. Gianna Bryant, 13, which was his second oldest was a basketball star on the rise. She had a passion for basketball and with the help from her father had only motivated her to play at her very best. She portrayed Mamba like moves on the court and there was no surprise that she would have been the next Mambacita! Kobe Bryant meant a lot to the world, a true inspiration, he has made a huge impact not only in the basketball community but on fans worldwide. Let’s continue to celebrate the life and legacy of the Mamba!

Located in Long Island City, the 67-story development, Skyline Tower, is now leading sales in New York's luxury real estate market. With a booming transit hub and rapidly growing neighborhood, Long Island's skyline and real estate market have changed tremendously in the past decade. At the start of 2019, rising interest rates caused many buyers to halt their plans in purchasing condominiums. Located in one of the world's most competitive markets, the increasing interest rates did not deter buyers from exploring their future home at Skyline Tower. In 2019, the tower managed to close 210 condo contracts, making it the top selling luxury real estate development. The project is a joint venture of Risland Holdings, LLC, United Construction & Development Group and FSA Capital LLC. In addition to Skyline Tower, Risland has two projects in the United States • Located in Prosper, Texas, Legacy Gardens is an upscale boutique 300-acre single-family masterplan community. The perfectly sized development provides all the amenities and lifestyle benefits of a large, master-planned community with the intimacy of a smaller, more connected neighborhood. • Mantua, a 25-year project with a 2,950-acre mixed-use community within two cities, Van Alstyne and Anna, Texas, will be reshaping the growth of North Texas. The first phase of the development, called Mantua Point, will include nature trails, beautiful amenities, a dog park, a pool and several gathering areas. Ultimately, the development is projected to have more than 6,000 homes and over 600 acres of commercial, office and mixed-use space while adding more jobs and a building a better economy in both Van Alstyne and Anna. While Skyline Tower is well underway with an impressive sales performance in 2019, Risland is developing world class residential and commercial real estate projects through a vertically integrated operating model. It combines the talent of local professionals using local vendors utilizing the experience and resources of its international partners to accomplish this goal. Risland seeks to develop profitable projects and focus on the responsibility to the surrounding environment and the well-being of the neighboring communities. They are committed to be successful in the local market and using green practices and be mindful of social responsibilities while promoting healthy lifestyles for individuals, families and providing jobs to the local community and the society at large. Risland also plays a big part globally in the real estate market while keeping a close watch on global sustainable developments. With 12 projects around the world including the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, India, Indonesia, etc., it is becoming an innovative driver in both urban developments and residential markets.

REAL ESTATE | MARKET TRENDS
Stage is Set for Competitive Spring Home Buying Season - For sale homes declined by 15.3 percent in February year-over-year, and inventory in large markets decreased by 16.3 percent - The February national median listing price was $310,000, up 3.9 percent year-over-year and prices are re-accelerating - Nationally, homes sold in 80 days in February, three days more quickly than last year The U.S. housing market continued to tighten in February as the inventory of for sale homes saw additional listings evaporate and
44
home prices rose, according to realtor.com's February Housing Trends Report released today. The continuation of these trends could signal a competitive spring homebuying season on the horizon. Based on realtor.com’s analysis, national housing inventory declined 15.3 percent year-over-year last month, while the median U.S. listing price grew by 3.9 percent, to $310,000. February's inventory decline, which amounted to a loss of 184,000 listings, was the largest year-over-year decline since realtor.com began tracking inventory data.
www.HighRiseLife.com
Twenty-five of the nation's 50 largest metros saw the number of homes for sale decline more than 20 percent. Inventory fell the fastest in Phoenix, San Diego, Calif., and San Jose, with decreases in excess of 36 percent over last year. "The Fed's decision to cut rates by 50 basis points earlier this week in reaction to concerns over the spread of Covid-19 is good for home buyers, but only if they can find a home to purchase. Finding a home remains the chief challenge in today's inventory-starved market," said realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale. "Given the still-decreasing number of homes for sale in many markets, if a listed home is priced well, expect it to sell quickly this year. Construction of new homes will need to jump into overdrive in order to bring the nation's supply and demand for housing back towards equilibrium. "Additionally, it remains to be seen how the recent growing concern over the spread of Covid-19 will impact consumer spending, at least in the short-term," Hale added.
March 2020
The lack of inventory prompted listing prices to increase 3.9 percent to $310,000, a slightly accelerated pace compared to last month. The U.S. median listing price had grown by 6 to 8 percent year over year until autumn of 2019 when growth began to slow, finally hitting a low of 3.1 percent in December. Home prices rose in 46 of the 50 largest markets in February and were on average 6.5 percent higher than last year. Philadelphia led the nation with the greatest price growth, topping out just above 17 percent at $295,000. As buyers grapple with a lack of inventory and rising prices, homes sold at a faster rate than last year. Nationally, homes sold in 80 days in February, three days quicker than last this time last year. This trend was exaggerated in the nation's largest metros where homes sold five days faster than last year on average. Hartford, Conn.; Raleigh, N.C.; and Washington, D.C. saw homes selling at the fastest rates in the nation compared to last year, each with homes selling more than two weeks faster than last year.

Rancho San Lucas Debuts New Greg Norman Signature Course in Los Cabos Rancho San Lucas, an 834-acre resort and residential community fronting a 1.2-mile stretch of beach on the Pacific Ocean 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, today celebrates the official grand opening of the Greg Norman Signature golf course and Rancho San Lucas Golf Club. The course is the showpiece of the resort and further positions Los Cabos as one of the top golf destinations in the world. Inspired by the native terrain and featuring splendid panoramic views, the Greg Norman Signature course at Rancho San Lucas is a versatile 7,210-yard, par-72 course laid out within earshot of the thundering surf of the Pacific Ocean. Spanning three different ecosystems, the links-style course meanders through a thick cactus forest creased by winding arroyos before descending to enormous windswept dunes.
46
Featuring a dramatic 300-foot elevation change, the well-strategized course has five holes on the beach, notably the par-3 third, which parallels the sea and will give players fine views of breaching whales during the winter months. There's also a signature island green at the testing par-3 17th hole. "Rancho San Lucas is the most spectacular piece of oceanfront property I've seen in a long time, so to have the opportunity to build a course on this site was truly once-in-a-lifetime," said Norman. "My goal was to keep it as natural as possible, using my 'least-disturbance' approach, while showcasing the property's three unique ecosystems: the ocean, the sand dunes and the arroyos. We wanted to build a sustainable course that is playable from all www.HighRiseLife.com
perspectives, including the forward tees. My design company is committed to making a global impact by creating courses that withstand the test of time, and I truly believe this golf course is one of the best we've ever built." Grassed from tee-to-green in Paspalum, a drought-tolerant, disease-resistant varietal, the course features a unique riveted bunkering design unlike anything else in the region. Specifically tailored to Cabo's terrain and locale, Norman and his design team integrated indigenous landscapes and grass varietals that use the least amount of water and in doing so, succeeded in creating a sustainable golf experience that flows naturally with the dune and desert landscape.
The club has applied for enrollment in Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Solmar Group Founder and Developer Francisco Bulnes relates a story about how the course was built. "In the beginning, Greg told me, 'It's such an amazing piece of property, we're only going to clear the fairway corridors 10 meters at a time.' Most designers mass clear a site and then attempt to re-vegetate it later. Not Greg. He was very careful to remove specimen trees and plants and shelter them in a nursery. He wanted to work at a very slow rate, so he could evaluate the site's contours and build the course in an environmentally responsible way. This took several months, but that's what his 'least-disturbance' design philosophy is all about: keep earthmoving to a minimum, and step as lightly as possible on nature's toes. We're excited to share this world-class golf course with our guests and owners." With two on-course comfort stations, each providing Mexican specialties and ice-cold refreshments, players can enjoy an all-inclusive experience during the round. A handsome ranchero-style clubhouse overlooks the fairways and sea. The practice facility features a spacious driving range, an 18-hole putting course, and dedicated chipping, pitching and sand play areas. Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to homeowners and guests of Solmar Hotels & Resorts, including the new on-site luxury hotel, Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas. The low-density community is elevating the standard of coastal living in Los Cabos with The Villas at Rancho San Lucas and the Norman Estates, a pair of residential communities. Real estate pricing ranges from $650,000 to $7 million. For more information, please visit www.ranchosanlucas.com.

The Landmark of San Francisco The Ferry Building Written by Paolo Murano
It’s a Saturday morning, the sun is rising and the fog is lingering as the city of San Francisco begins to wake up. There are runners jogging along the Embarcadero, breathing in the cool bay air. As they run past the iconic Ferry Building, there are shops preparing to open and outside there are farmers and food vendors setting up for the world-famous Farmer’s Market. The Ferry Building today is home to local artisanal merchants, regional producers and farmers, and serves as a transit hub for ferries from San Francisco to four different Bay Area ports. Located at the edge of high-rise offices and residential towers, the Ferry Building serves as a marketplace for commuters, locals, and tourists alike.
54
Completed in 1898, the Ferry Building served as the main port for tens of thousands of daily workers traveling to and from the East Bay. Every day boats carrying people and goods were brought through the Ferry Building port. However, with the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge and wider use of cars and freeways, people became less reliant on ferries and the Ferry Building was eventually converted into office spaces by 1955. After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and dismantling of the freeway in front of the Ferry Building, an opportunity to renovate the space and turn it into a world class marketplace began and the building was reopened in 2003.
www.HighRiseLife.com
Today, if you open a tourist guide or ask a local for their top San Francisco recommendations, you will hear that the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays at the Ferry Building is always a must see. Not only do you get to visit the iconic and historic building, but also you get to connect with regional and local farmers and vendors. The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market began in 1993. It preceded and was the inspiration for the renovation of the Ferry Building interior as a marketplace in 2003. The organization behind the world-famous farmers market is a nonprofit called the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA). CUESA was founded in 1994 and they strive to "grow thriving communities through the power and joy of local food.” Since 1999, CUESA has provided farmers market patrons with products from local farmers, food artisans, and restaurants, high quality and healthy products, transparency and educational opportunities to learn about the foods sold at the market, educational demonstrations, support for small food businesses and farmers, and increased
public access to fresh produce. CUESA pledges to “Work toward a healthy, just, and sustainable food system through education, advocacy, and action.” CUESA hosts a variety of events and programs outside of the Saturday Ferry Plaza Farmers Market throughout the year that allow people to learn, connect, and advocate for healthy food systems. To assist with funding these programs, CUESA hosts a series of fundraisers that serve to invite patrons to experience and learn more about sustainable and healthy food systems. Personally, my favorite CUESA event is their annual Summer Bash where local restaurants and food and beverage vendors to serve and educate patrons, while raising funds to keep the educational programs going. This event is always a party with a mission, with unlimited food and drinks from the Bay Area’s best chefs and bartenders, all made with the freshest farmers market produce. The next one will take place on June 14th, 2020 and the equally fun Sunday Supper will be on October 4th, 2020 so hope to see you all there this year.

Did You Know That Face Washing Mistakes CAN AGE YOU? Skincare is a unique process for everyone. Beauty routines range from the systematically meticulous to borderline nonexistent. But the truth of the matter is that no matter where you lie in the skincare spectrum, you could be making mistakes that cause your skin to age simply by washing your face incorrectly. We spoke to Dr. Manish Shah, who is a board-certified plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert in Denver, Colorado. He counsels patients on cosmetic procedures, maintaining results, optimizing their skincare, and preventative measures. "While skin treatments, injectables, and surgery can help maintain the visual appearance, your basic skincare goes a long way toward preventing premature aging. You Are Washing Your Face Incorrectly If You Do the Following Using too much toner Facial toners are an essential part of any beauty routine. However, using too much toner can dry out the skin and may even lead to more sebum production as your glands attempt to overcompensate. If you find your skin feeling tight or irritated after applying toner, you may be using too much, and this is especially true if you have sensitive or combination skin. Some toners come in a spray bottle, which is great for applying a light layer over the skin after cleansing. If not, simply pour a few drops of toner on a cotton pad and gently glide it across the face. Also, many toners have alcohol-based ingredients, such as denatured alcohol, in them. Avoid toners with these ingredients at all costs -- as they will dry the skin completely and remove natural oils needed to keep the skin moist and healthy. Products that are too harsh As consumers become more sophisticated, they inquire about ingredients such as retinol. They know it is super hydrating and great for the skin, but they don't understand that skincare needs to be sustainable, so they ask for the strongest, most active form of prescription retinoid. "This is a mistake," says Dr. Shah, "any credible doctor will first assess the condition of your skin alongside the products and treatments you are already using in order to determine if you need prescription retinol or if a less active form sold over-the-counter is better for you." Dr. Shah explains that "retinol in less active forms will have similar effects without irritating the skin as much, which will be helpful to you as you continue using a product on your skin over time." Scrubbing too hard Instead of rubbing and scrubbing your face to try to get it squeaky clean, your motions with your cleanser should be as gentle as possible. Your hands should not be doing all the work! Scrubbing the skin too harshly or with materials that add exfoliation can cause micro-tears in the skin as well as excessive elimination of essential oils which leave the skin dry. Over exfoliating While gently exfoliating a few nights, a week can do wonders for the skin, it's easy to go overboard. What keeps your skin looking fresh, young, and hydrated is preserving the outer layers glow March 2020
by lightly helping it shed old skin cells and moisturizing to help cell turnover. However, "the danger is that many people don't think to consider their loofah or washcloth as an exfoliation tool. Even if you are only using an exfoliant a few days a week if you are scrubbing with a harsher material every day, you could be exfoliating more than you intend and that can cause dryness, red patches, dehydration, and hyperpigmentation," warns Dr. Shah. Washing with hot water Though it might feel good, using hot water to cleanse your face can dehydrate it. Hot water can be abrasive, stripping the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and flaky. This can also lead to acne flare, breakouts, and skin irritation. For best results, rinse your face with lukewarm or cool water - not cold either - to help constrict blood vessels. Dr. Shah also points out that "hot water enlarges your pores, and this can affect the oil production of the skin as well as the texture of it." Washing more than twice a day You may be thinking, the cleaner, the better, right? Think again. Over-washing your face can actually damage the skin's natural protective system, which then can affect how easily the environment irritates your skin, how efficiently you retain moisture, and—over time—cause you to show early signs of aging such as fine lines and dry patches. "As a general rule of thumb, you should not be washing your face more than twice a day. If you have an activity like working out or an outdoor sport in the middle of the day, try to use a bland soap or cleanser to wash away dirt and sweat without further irritating the skin," advises Dr. Shah. Forgetting to follow up with a moisturizer "The best time to apply moisturizer is after the shower or after applying toner. This will help prevent excessive dryness, and it will help to skin retain moisture," says Dr. Shah. Moisturizers also come with a combination of vitamins and lipids that help the skin heal irritations, strengthen its protective functions, and look smoother and healthier. Washing with whatever soap is available. Many people are guilty of this one. People may think that soap is soap and a clean face is just a clean face, but you could be damaging your skin and aging yourself by washing the face with any available hand soap. Soaps with fragrances can be especially irritating to the skin. Overall, these soaps are not made for the face, and while this may be a minimalist approach, it borders on detrimental as hand soaps are dehydrating and lack many of the ingredients that optimize your skin's complexion.

Japanese Brand Yoshikimono is Partnering with Victoria & Albert Museum Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk New Exhibition in London On February 29th, the V&A opened Europe’s first major exhibition on kimono curated by Anna Jackson and Josephine Rout. The ultimate symbol of Japan, the kimono is often perceived as traditional, timeless and unchanging. Kimono: Kyototo Catwalk will counter this conception, presenting the garment as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion. It is then natural for the brand Yoshikimono to partner with V&A and be featured in the exhibition. Indeed, the brand has been created 10 years ago by iconic Japanese rock star Yoshiki. Yoshiki is the founder of rock band X Japan who sold during their international career more than 30 million albums. Within his collections, Yoshiki wants to celebrate the Kimono as a traditional garment but with a fashion contemporary twist. His aim is to introduce the art of the kimono to the younger generation in order to perpetuate this Japanese tradition. Highlights of the exhibition include a kimono created by Living National Treasure Kunihiko Moriguchi, the dress designed for Björk by Alexander McQueen and worn on the album cover Homogenic, and original Star Wars costumes modelled on kimono by John Mollo and Trisha Biggar. Designs by Yves Saint Laurent, Rei Kawakubo and John Galliano will reveal the kimono’s role as a constant source of inspiration for fashion designers. A fabulous kimono made with lightnings patchwork inspired by Kiss band will be featured from one of the first Yoshi kimono collections.
Q: How do you want your brand to evolve in the coming years? I think I’ve contributed to changing the Japanese music scene. My way of showing respect to all those artists including fashion designers is the word “disrupt”. As you know, kimono is as traditional as you can get in Japan, a country which most people consider to be conservative. I would like to keep tradition, and at the same time I’d like to break the unwritten laws the industry has made, which keep them confined within their own boundaries. These unwritten laws may not only apply to this specific industry, they may apply to any sector. There’s a fine line between the “sane and insane”. I’d like to keep walking on that thin line until I realize which side I belong to, or which side the world wants to belong to. Regardless, I feel very grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity to express my heart. The exhibition will take place at Gallery 39 and North Court, V&A, London. From February 29th to February to June 21st, 2020.
YOSHIKI QUOTES FOR PARTNERING WITH V&A Q: Why did you decide to go into fashion, and launch the YOSHIKIMONO brand? When I create music, I’m not just creating a combination of sound, I’m creating the life which some people might have lost, which my father lost. In terms of fashion, we are not only decorating the surface, we are revitalizing the inside every time we put something on our skin. Music and fashion co-exist in the same world. My father was a kimono creator and pianist... I guess that’s in my blood also.
Q: How does it feel to be present at the first major Western exhibition on kimono? It’s such an honor to be part of this exhibition. I can’t thank the curator enough for bringing kimono culture to this amazing museum. I feel grateful not only for my brand YOSHIKIMONO being part of it, but grateful for the entire kimono industry coming into the spotlight.
Q: In your opinion, does kimono have a place in the Western cloakroom and in fashion in general? Why is that? A century ago, who would have thought Japanese cuisine could have made it in the western world? Who knows? A century from now, people might be wearing kimono in space... Even on Mars.
