(Weslaco, Tx)-“This is a real man’s race”, says Panther head coach David Fuentes. When Fuentes was a sibling, his father would take him to track meets and he would tell him that the 4x400 meter relay race was a race of endurance and “this is where you find all the excitement” he would add. And with that, Fuentes found himself competing in the same race at Weslaco High School where he was a star athlete playing football and ran the 1600 meter relay too. “We won district my senior year and winning this event surprised everyone,” says Fuentes. Will the surprises continue this Saturday night in the final event of the University Interscholastic League’s State 5A
Track and Field Championships at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas? Race is set for May 12th at 8:05 p.m. Weslaco will be making its second straight State 5A Track and Field Championships appearance in the 1600 meter relay event. However, the Panthers will have their hands full as they will try to unseat Desoto High School’s best time of 3:12.86 as compared to the purple and white’s time of 3:17.32. “We will be running in lane six and our team feels that we will can make up at least two seconds,” adds Fuentes. The Panther’s relay team is made up of three returning state competitors. Senior Mike Garza runs the first leg of

the race and he will hand off to senior newcomer Juan Cruz, followed by returnee Jerry Espinoza taking the hand off from Cruz and ending with junior returnee, Mishak Rivas running as the anchor. Garza knew that running the first leg had all the likings of a Super Bowl and doing it again this season would only demand more than just expectations. “We had to work harder,” says the Top 5% graduating senior who has maintained an overall grade point average of 97.0. “This is my senior year and I wanted to make sure that every second would count. Just my own motivation alone, helped me to work harder and encourage my teammates to do the same,” he adds. With last year’s teammate, Albert Rojas out for this year’s race, Fuentes had to make a choice to replace Rojas. He chose to go with Juan Cruz. “After we lost Albert Rojas to an injury recently, Juan was my next choice,” says Fuentes. “He has the most experience amongst our runners,” adds Fuentes. Cruz was part of the 2007 district championship relay teams in the 400m, 800m, and the 1600m. “He has run all the legs of every race. Our team is comfortable with him. Rojas is the captain of this team and he supports Cruz too,” added Fuentes. The next best time in state is 3:15.23 by Cedar Hill High School, followed by Baytown Sterling at 3:16.96. The Panthers rank fourth at 3:17.32. Do the Panthers have a chance to place in the top three? Fuentes thinks so. “Our team has been running in lane six all week long and I am pleased with our progress. It will be an exciting finish in Austin,” says the third year head track coach. Alternates for this year’s squad are Elizar Gaona and Pepe Cabrera. Four Legs. Running the first leg (top photo) will be Mike Garza handing off to Juan Cruz. 2007 UIL State 5A Track and Field Championships: May 11&12th 9:00 a.m.
Valley Athletes Make Trip To Austin (Raymondville, Tx)-If there is one team that could bring home a team state title at the Class 3A Track and Field Championships this weekend in Austin at the Mike Myers Stadium, it would have to be the Raymondville Bearkats boys team. The Bearkats field probably seven of the best Region IV competitors in the 4X100m relay, 800m run, 200m Dash, 4X400 Relay, Long jump, Shot put, and Triple Jump. Carlos Dominguez will compete in the triple jump and long jumps. His triple mark of 44-03.75 and long jump of 22’10” will need to improve if he expects to win the state title in either event. The top long jump mark is 24’0; while David Rodriguez will try to improve his mark in the shot put bettering his regional throw of 52-02.0, along with his discus throw of 155’09”. With seven events, all the Bearkats will need to do is score points in every event.
The higher the finish, the more points a team scores. On the girl’s side, McAllen Memorial’s Tricia Terry holds the best time in Class 5A in the 1600m run with a 5:01.40 and ranks third in the 3200m run with a time of 10:58.51, eleven seconds behind the leader, Allison Pye of Houston CyCreek. Pye also ranks second in the 1600m run with a time of 5:02.65. Both runners will have atleast one hour of rest before they go head to head again in the 1600m run. Another Valley hopeful vying for a possible medal will be Stephen Saenz of Rio Grande Valley in the Shot put event. His throw of 59’04” ranks fourth in state, with Nick Jones heaving the best mark of 61’01”. Mike Sanchez of Sharyland will compete in the shot put with the second best throw of 59’10”.

(Edinburg, Tx)- It was game one that made all the difference in the world for head coach Nick Cantu Jr. and his Edinburg North Cougars. However, the 32-5A second place Weslaco Panthers recovered after trailing 5-2 to go ahead and win 6-5 in the Best-of Three series in the first round of the State 5A Bi-District Championships. The Cougars, who finished third in District 31-5A surprised the Panthers in the second inning as they scored four runs with Randy Ramirez taking a pitch from starting pitcher Mark Ortiz, good for a two-run double that scored Robert Olivarez and Josh Silva. Again, the Cougars would pound Ortiz for another two more runs in the same inning with Javier Chavez hitting a driver to make it 4-2 Edinburg North. In the third inning, North would increase their lead by another run on a pop-up fly by Chris Cavazos to score Olivarez. The Cougars led 5-2 at the end of three innings. Then Weslaco head coach Eddie Serna made a pitching mound change and decided to go with senior relief
ace, Fabian Cuellar and he quickly cooled down the Cougar bats for the rest of the night. “He’s our ace of all positions and tonight Fabian came through for us,” said Serna. Mark Ortiz connected on a game-winning two-run hit in the top of the sixth inning scoring David Martinez and Dylan Deleon to win 6-5. In Game two, the Panthers easily defeated the Cougars 11-1 in five innings to win the series 2-0 and advance to the next round against Laredo United. The winner of WeslacoLaredo United will meet the winner of Sharyland-Harlingen South in the Class 5A Region IV Quarterfinals.
Sharyland Advances To Round Two In more Region IV Class 5A BiDistrict action, Sharyland defeated Laredo Alexander 12-2 in six innings in game one and the Bulldogs did all they could to keep up with the Rattlers in game two, but this game would end in five innings, 10-1. La Joya Sweeps Past Eagle Pass The La Joya Coyotes took care of first round business by defeating Eagle Pass 6-2 to sweep the series and advance to the area championships against Brownsville Porter (1811) this weekend. The winner of this game will meet the winner of the McAllen H.S. and Brownsville Lopez game in the Class 5A Region IV Quarterfinals next week. The Coyotes (28-3) were led by catcher Juan Martinez who had two hits for the day, along with the heroics of Miguel Pena who scored a key hit in the fifth inning to break a 2-1 gap. He would score two runners. The Coyotes will travel to Porter on May 10th for Game 1 and then come back home for Game 2 at Coyote field on May 11th at 7:30 p.

Martin head coach TJ Tijerina could only watch his team in game two fall apart as he would try to cheer on his team from the dugout. “We have to play better,” Tijerina told his team as they trailed 6-1 after two innings. For the Bulldogs, this would be sweet revenge after last year’s falling to the Tigers. In game one on Friday night, senior pitcher Joaquin Hinojosa controlled the mound with 14 strikeouts and winning in a 5-0 shutout. On this Saturday afternoon, game two would not be any different as the game ended after five innings. McHi starting pitcher Alvaro Moreno (7-1) drove in the first of five runs in the second inning
and even though Martin managed to hit off Moreno, it was the bats for McHi that made the difference. Moreno was a bit rusty after a two week furlough and this gave the Tigers an opportunity to score three runs after three innings. At this point, the Bulldogs led 6-3. Sophomore left-hander James Franz worked the final inning, earning him the save. “They were better. Pompa has real good team and they should do well in the playoffs,” added Martin head coach Tijerina. The Bulldogs will now play Brownsville Lopez in the second round of the state playoffs in the Best-of-Three series beginning tonight at McHi Baseball field. Games two and three (if necessary) will be played at Lopez. Homerun. On Friday night, Game 2 at the Lady Raiders Softball Complex had all the homefield advantages as the Raider crowds cheered on the Lady Raiders. “We played a hard-fought series and both teams played well,� said Medrano. Lady Coyotes Ad State 5A Softball Region IV Bi-District finals: La Joya Wins Game Three Over Weslaco
(La Joya, Tx)-The biggest mistake that the Weslaco Lady Panthers did in the State 5A Softball area playoffs was beat the state-ranked La Joya Lady Coyotes on their own field turf 1-0 last week in the best of three series. Weslaco (22-12) watched the Lady Coyotes end their 24-game winning streak after starting the season at 2-5. Her father would have been proud as Lady Panther sophomore pitcher Alex Guerrero was in the groove all night as she fanned 12 batters, dedicating this game to her deceased father. Lady Panther Crystal Tello scored the only run of the night on an error by La Joya catcher Clara Ozuna. The Lady Coyotes had their opportunities in the second inning when Melissa Rodriguez was walked and then stole two bases to make it to third
base. Guerrero would make sure that the next two batters would not reach first base and then struck them out. Head coach Carlos Rodriguez took his hat off to the Lady Panthers and also said that his team would need to fight back in game two in Weslaco. “This will not be easy today,” said Rodriguez as his team took the field on Saturday afternoon. In game two, the Lady Panthers took an early 2-0 lead as their bats came alive early on. Starting pitcher Monica Rodriguez, only a sophomore and daughter of head coach Rodriguez, took the mound and Weslaco quickly took advantage of her nervousness. However, late in the game, the Lady Coyotes bench started to do their “coyote-type of heckling” with waving arms and crying-mottos, which seemed to

2007 State Region IV Golf Results
Weslaco Golfer Advances to State (Weslaco, Tx)- And just like that, the Rio Grande Valley will only be represented by one senior golfer who had dreams of making her trip years ago. Kaitlin Hovda of Weslaco High School surprised the field at the Region IV Golf Tournament held at Cedar Creek in San Antonio by winning a playoff hole to make her first state appearance this weekend at Roy Kiger Golf Course in Austin, Texas. “This is like a dream come true. I will try my best to win,” says the longtime golfer. Many golfers had to overcome the wet conditions after a storm blew past the San Antonio area one day prior and only those with patience would survive the slower greens and shorter fairways. Last year’s fifth place team in the Class 5A boy’s division, Sharyland, failed to make their bid for another state appearance. Since the rain damaged most of the fairways at Pecan Valley G.C., golf officials narrowed
the event to 27-holes. Sharyland’s Brandon Reyna opened with a 70 to lead all golfers, but flustered in the final nine holes with a 43 due to a nagging wrist injury. Other RGV players not advancing were PSJA Memorial’s Jonathon Sloss and twotime 31-5A champion, Adam Haley of Edinburg; and last year’s state contender, Felicia Espericueta, two-time 31-5A champion, of Edinburg North. The state tournament for Class 5A tees off at 8:00 a.m. on May 10th and 11th at Roy Kiger Golf Course in Austin, Texas. The public is invited to attend.

2007 Bi-District Softball Champions: San Benito Lady Greyhounds The Lady Greyhounds lost a three game playoff to Eagle Pass 2-1, 8-9, and 7-6 in the area playoffs. The third game was played in 11-innings last Saturday night. San Benito captured the 32-5A District title.
