Editorial Boys will be boys? Former Donna head football coach and athletic director, Dave Evans finally met his own fate when he was quoted saying, “boys will be boys” on Eyewitness News Five regarding the hazing allegations which took place on campus and various school sporting trips. His arrogant smile he being when portrayed interviewed on camera was convincing enough to get him fired by the Donna I.S.D. School Board. So what really took place behind the scenes? According to HSSM and Donna police reports, three Donna High athletes student School initiated several players by sexually molesting each one. Is this called Hazing? In the State of Texas, Family Child Protective Services (CPS) calls it sexual abuse. A crime. A national survey conducted in 1989-99 by Alfred University

of New York regarding hazing amongst college athletes, more than 325,000 athletes particpating in sports from 1,000 plus colleges; 250,000 plus athletes had experienced some form of hazing in order to be part of the team. Students were either beaten, tied up, kidnapped, force to committ

crimes, or were harassed in various other ways. Is it really worth it to be part a sports team that will not protect the diginity of our own children? Coaches serve as public servants and role models for these innocent athletes. What takes place on the field,

locker rooms, road trips, or other related sport functions, parents put their utmost trust in these coaches for caring for their children. These scars will never heal for the teens that were sexually abused or hazed. Mr. Evans, these boys will never be boys again...

(Weslaco, Tx)-As the grey-thunder clouds loomed from a distant gradually making their way to Bobby Lackey Stadium like a magnet on this Saturday afternoon on August 6th in Weslaco, players and coaches from across the Rio Grande Valley entered through the fenced gates for a photo shoot, but most of all, a quick look at their competitors from their districts, but this time it would be a face-toface encounter. It’s Football Season and RGV High School Sports Magazine debuts with its’ first issue back since 1999. “It’s great to have you guys back. It’s about time”, said Sharyland head football coach Fred Sanchez of District 30-5A as he walked to greet publisher, David “TDDAVE” Amador. While most readers might wonder why RGV High School Sports Magazine took some time off from the sidelines, publisher David A. Amador quickly answers this reason by stating that, “media technology is now in our hands and minds; anything that we would like to accomplish via internet or 4-color processing is now affordable and viable. Back then it was very frustrating, now we have SBC and Roadrunner internet systems which makes the internet faster and more elusive.” As Amador greeted more than 200 players from 19 teams making the trip to Weslaco wearing their school color jerseys, pants, and shoes, he stood amazed. “This feels like yesterday, but better,” says Amador as players and coaches filled out player profiles and season schedules under the tents of one sponsor, T-Mobile of the Rio Grande Valley. Attending the one day event was Clay Williams, KGBT-4 sports director. “This is great to have all these players and coaches attend this event. This is awesome,” added Williams. Mustangs

Meet the No.1 Team in 2005

By David A. Amador, HSSMOnine@yahoo.com

(McAllen, Tx)-The talk in District 30-5A is all about a much improved McAllen Memorial High School Mustang football team who are picked by RGV High School Sports Magazine as the No.1 team to beat in the Rio Grande Valley. The Mustangs, according to third-year head football coach, Joe Littleton, formerly of State 3A power house Cuevo believes that his Mustangs will be ready to excute all that will be needed to bring the Mustangs a second district title and playoff appearance since the Mustangs went 10-0 in District in the late 1990’s. “This will be our year,” says Littleton and he has one of the most highly recruited player in the Nation to do this with too. Junior sensation, Bradley Stephens, who stands at 6’0 and 190 lbs will team up with junior quarterback 6’0 Mitchell Bunger, who passed for more than 1,300 yards will seek tight end 6’1, 220 lbs. John R. Dougherty as one of his favorite targets to go on offense. Littleton finished last year with a young sophomore team at 2-3 in district play but also discovered the running talents of then 15-year old Bradley who has now rushed for more than 2,000 yards in his career. With Bradley gaining national attention

from most Division I colleges with his 4.0 GPA and 4.4 speed, other players that 30-5A teams must also deal with are 17 returning starters with seven on offense and seven on defense. Both sides are pumped in size and speed. Having Bradley will only make things more difficult for teams like McAllen, Rowe, and even La Joya in 2005. Players to watch on offense will be be guard, Roger Cantu 6’0 offensive tackle Robby Jasso, 6’1, 265 lbs. with wideouts 6’2 Jake Honeycutt and Carlos Nasser. On defense, linebackers 6’0 Danny Roman, and 6’0 Emory Sweeney, DT Josh Navarro, DE Andy Medina, and free safety Chris Pallagi, FS 6’2 John Halligan, will bring back the much needed experience and leadership to stop opposing teams. FS Halligan returns after leading the team with 125 tackles. The Mustangs open their season at Mission Veterans Memorial on Sept. 1st followed by Brownsville Pace, Weslaco East, and then traveling to face Corpus Christi Ray on September 23rd. With Bradley receiving high expectations as a junior, teams like Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, and even Iowa State will be trying to figure out a way to entice this academic successful student.

Rowe Warriors on War Path (McAllen, Tx)-After dismantling the McHi Bulldogs in the season finale match up last year to clinch the final playoff spot in District 30-5A to join Sharyland and La Joya, head football coach Gary Lauer should be able to secure a playoff prior to their match up with Tony Harris and his Dogs in 2005. The Warriors return only 14 lettermen after losing 30 seniors from their 7-5 season and Class 5A Division II area playoff appearance. Calling the plays will be the versatile QB Manny Gatling, a (6-2, 190, 4.7) senior who is also drawing college interest from some Division I schools. With his “Michael Vick” type of moves and speed, offensive linemen OT Michael Salinas, OG Erin Rodriguez, and OG Rey Carillo need to protect and give Gatling the needed time to excute his moves down field. On defense, junior defensive tackle Michael Flores (6-5, 230, 5.0) will team up with CB Michael Enriquez (5-8, 130, 4.6), LB Tony Reyna, and DT Alex Garza, to give the Warriors depth on defense. Gatling is projected to go both ways. Other prospects to look for are TB Jon Jimenez, K Marco Ruiz, and WR John Clough. Coach Lauer will be depending on Gatling, an all-Valley Player and unanimous all district pick from 2004 to move his offense. Extra point kicker and field goal artist, Ruiz accounted for 50 points last year.

Sharyland Loses QB Sarver

(Mission, Tx)-Sharyland head football coach had to deal with adversity in 2004 when his starting quarterback Josh Saenz decided to move back to McAllen to play for the McHi Bulldogs after his mold problem at home disappeared. This left Sanchez wondering who would start at Sharyland during the summer of ‘04. Good things happen for a good reason. Sanchez found his quarterback in Jonathon Sarver and a playoff berth while Saenz stayed home with a 2-3 district finish with the Bulldogs. It happened again for the third straight season. Sarver is injured and will be out for at least eight weeks due to a shoulder injury he experienced during a scrimmage recently. Eight offensive starters returning in 2005 to make this Rattler team a serious threat to contend with in 30-5A. With Sarver out, running back Waldo Garza (5-10, 198, 4.67), who scampered for 1,258 yards and found the end zone 14 times will be depended on to carry the load. On the line, center Michael Sanchez 6-2, 240, 5.0) returns along with OG Jon Villarreal, WR Trey Quientero, TE Homer Sanez, and WR Michael Smith. Newcomer and sophomore running back Cooper Shockley (5-10, 170, 4.7) could give the Rattlers balance in the backfield with Garza. On defense, cornerback Christian Pena, DE Trevor Ibison, LB Hilario Compean, LB Lucas Rodriguez, DB Orlando Pacheco and LB Joe Hinojosa will complete Sharyland’s bid to hold opposing offense at the line. The Rattlers will travel to Harlingen South on September 2nd followed by Mission (9/9), Edinburg North (9/16), and will then host Corpus Christi Moody on Sept. 23rd. District play will open at Rowe on October 6th. 12

30-5A Preview

La Joya Loaded Up Front (La Joya, Tx)-The next time the La Joya Coyotes host a State 5A Division I Quarterfinal game against power house Converse Judson Rockets, hopefully head coach Oscar Villasenor will offer to take the Rockets out to dinner and eat some “Cabrito” in order to slow them down. That was 2004, this is 2005. Again, the Coyotes, with a school enrollment of more than 4,500 students, return 41 lettermen with five starters on offense and four on defense. Last season, in District 30-5A, the Coyotes were perfect at 5-0 and clinched the title with an overall 10-3 record. On offense, Villasenor believes that he has the best running back in the league with Juan Martinez, who rushed for 375 yards in 2004. He will be joined in the back field by Jojo Ortiz and Jorge Tello. Other players to watch are TE Ray Ramirez, OL Pablo Ruiz, and TE Hector Veliz. On defense, all-district returnee nose guard Martin Lomas (5-10, 209, 4.9) returns with FS Juan Gonzalez (6-2, 185, 4.7), along with LB Andrew Rodriguez, SS Danny Zuniga,DB Carlos Delgadillo, and DE Manuel Lopez. The Coyotes host Laredo Alexander on September 2nd and they will hit the road against Edinburg Economedes and Corpus Christi Carroll. On September 23, the Coyotes will host Corpus Christi King. Look for the Coyotes to maintain winning edge throughout the year with a few surprises.

RGC Rattlers will Improve

Abel Cortez DT

Kris Perez OL

(Rio Grande City, Tx)-Greg Lara, head football coach of the Rio Grande City Rattlers will enter his second season pleased to know that RGV High School Sports Magazine picks them to finish fifth in District 30-5A and not last. With only three starters back on both sides of the ball, this could be a much improved football team in 2005, despite last year’s 3-6 finish. Players to watch on offense will be running back Roel Garza (5-11,175,4.6) with full back Leo Lopez. On the line, RG Joe Willie Leal, LT Danny Martinez, LT Juan Lopez, RT Juan Lara, all return to give the Rattlers depth. Lara feels comfortable with the experience of his returning lettermen which will make the Rattlers stronger this year.

Bulldogs looking to Rebound (McAllen,Tx)-What will Bulldog fans say if McAllen continues to miss the playoffs for the third straight year? Head football coach Tony Harris, now in his ninth season has taken his Dogs to the state playoffs only three times and has posted a combined 4-6 district record in the last two years. Five starters return on offense with QB Joaquin Hinojosa (5’-10”, 170, 4.6) moving up from the wide receiver slot along with C Lupe Cesarez (5-11, 215, 5.0) and OG Cris Olivarez(5-11,235, 5.1) returning. The Bulldogs are picked to finish last in District 30-5A by RGV High School Sports Magazine and will face a dangerous Weslaco Panther team on September 2nd followed by three home consecutive non-district games against Edinburg North (9/8) and Porter (9/15) and PSJA (9/23). Edinburg

Bobcats Vela Feeling Great and Ranked No.1 By David A. Amador, HSSM Sportswriter

HSSM PHOTO

(Edinburg, Tx)-If you would have told Edinburg Bobcat head football coach Robert Vela that his life was on a high roller coaster ride, he probably would have agreed. On the other hand, if you would have told him that his life was riding on the edge, he probably would has said, “you are crazy.” Vela, early on in the year did find that his physical well-being was at risk when he went in for his regular check-up. “It was crazy,” Vela told RGV High School Sports Magazine when his doctor told him he needed heart surgery immediately because of clogged arteries. “I would have never imagined that my life was in jeopardy. I talk about being Bobcats as a team, now I discovered that my doctors were true Bobcats. They saved my life,” says Vela. At 57, Vela says he “feels great” and is ready to take on another season in District 31-5A. The Bobcats are picked to win it all by RGV High School Sports Magazine but Vela adds that this time it will be a title that we “will not share with anyone.” The Bobcats return 22 lettermen with five starters on both sides of the ball with running back Dustin Ponce who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2004. The 5’10, 185 lbs. Senior will be joined by quarterback Bobby Trevino, who will move up from the safety slot. On the line, offensive tackle Eric Rogers will make routes for third year running back, senior Jesse Galvan and junior Adrian Casares, who

stands at 5’8 and weighs in at 150lbs. “We should be ready. Our schedule early on is tough, so it should prepare us for district,” says Vela. Tough is an understatement. The Bobcats open their season against last season’s Class 5A Division II Regional quarter finalists, San Benito; the Harlingen Cardinals will travel to Bobcat Stadium; and finally ending their non-district schedule with Class 4A powerhouse, Calallen. All three teams went deep in the playoffs last year. Vela and his Bobcats will open their district game at 2 p.m. at home against the Weslaco Panthers. Will the Edinburg Bobcats continue to surprise their counterparts in 31-5A? Last year, the sub-varsity teams went 18-2 in district play so expect the Bobcats to scratch it out with the Weslaco Panthers and new head coach Tony Villarreal. Head coach Robert Vela, says he is doing fine and feels great about himself and his second chance with life. “I look forward to seeing the team everyday. They give me all the strength I need,” adds Vela.

New Beginnings for Donna Redskins

back on offense and defense after clinching a co-championship District 31-5A title in 2004. Donna junior QB Noe Garcia (6-0, 205, 4.9) will team up with speedster RB Mike Tatum, and offensive linemen Noe Robles and Steven Kennedy. Chavez takes over a solid program that went through a rough off season. QB Garcia picked up three -starts last year, throwing for 440 yards and 6 TDs.

(Donna, Tx)-The Donna Redskins have seen more controversy within the football program than new head coach and athletic director Tom Chavez has ever seen. “Let’s move forward and be successful. These athletes deserve it,” says Chavez. One Donna source told RGV High School Sports Magazine that, “many senior players have quit the team for not wanting to comply with Chavez and his way of coaching. He says that only “two” have quit so far. The Donna Redskins return 20 lettermen, with five starters

New Look Panthers Ready for District

(Weslaco, Tx)-If Weslaco Panther quarterback Casey Cavazos, (6’3, 220 lbs) is anything like his cousin Sone Cavazos, former standout QB for the purple & white and Texas Tech, then the Panther’s return to glory will be well defined for new football head coach, Tony Villarreal. Villarreal comes to Weslaco after resigning from Brownsville Hanna and he

formerly coached at PSJA North and Port Isabel. He says Weslaco should have been his home a long time ago. “The people here are great. This town has a lot of class. I’m proud to have come here,” says Villarreal. While at Port Isabel, Villarreal coached his team to the State 3A semi finals and he also led the PSJA North Raiders to an undefeated season and with the Panthers

winning only three games in the past two years, Villarreal feels that “this program” is filled with talent. “The talent here is unbelieveable. We now have more than 170 athletes out for the program,” adds Villarreal. After going 0-6 in District 31-5A in 2004, the Panthers will rely on starters returning like all-district LB Anthony Villarreal (6-0,195,4.6), alldistrict TE Cameron Terneen

(6-6,285, 4.8), WR Albert Rojas (5-11,155,4.4) and Nick Garza (6-1, 265,5.0. Sophomore sensation alldistrict wide receiver, Mishak Rivas (5-10,145,4.4) returns to give the Panthers all the speed they will need with an all purpose player. Other prospects include DT Corey Villarreal, and DE David Chapa. The Panthers host McHi on Sept. 2nd. 31-5A Pre-Season Rankings

PSJA Bears Depending on “Big Mac”

(Pharr,Tx)-In a speech to his players after practice, PSJA Head football coach, Mel Rios talked about the commitment soldiers from the Valley have made to one another and tells his team that we “as a team must do the same”. Twenty-one lettermen return to the line up to make the PSJA Bears a true contender

in District 31-5A. Seven starters return on both sides with six-foot-three defensive end Marcario Lopez anchoring the defensive line to pose as a threat for Valley teams. After finishing at 5-5 in 2004, and 2-4 district, key players to watch on offense will be junior RB Marcos Garcia (510, 170, 4.6). Under center,

QB Adrian Garza returns after passing for some 700 yards late in the season; his favorite targets will be WR Rigo De La Cerda, and TE Ross Guzman. According to Rios, Lopez is gaining some college interest from Division I schools and will join FS Gabriel Alcala, LB Frank Vargas. Vargas was the work horse for the Bears

in 2004 with his 83 tackles. The Bears travel to Los Fresnos on Sept. 9th before hosting the San Benito Greyhounds on Sept. 16th. Rios will again take his team on the road for two straight games against McHi and Economedes. RGV High School Sports Magazine picks the Bears to finish third in District 31-5A. HSSM PHOTOS

PSJA North Ready To Begin Quest (Pharr,Tx)-When many did not expect PSJA North head coach Orlando Garcia and his ‘black” Raiders to make the playoffs in 2004, he proved everyone wrong again. “We are usually the underdog, but we will always wear black. It’s our trade mark,” says

Garcia. Seventeen lettermen return with only four expected starters on offensive back after last year’s 7-4 season The Raiders will host PSJA Memorial on Sept. 2nd and Mercedes (9/8) before traveling to Harlingen South

on September 16th. Garcia says that his “team will be ready” and “we should be okay when the season starts”. Players expected to lead their team are offensive tackle Rene Tijerina (62,295, 5.3) and defensive

back T.J. Fonseca (5-7,175, 4.7). Other players moving to new slots are sophomore LB Jesse Diaz (5-9, 210, 5.1), LB Brian Sanchez, LB Christian Garza, DB Jesse Martinez, TE Victor Ordonez, OT Rene Gonzalez, FS Hector Jasso, and DT Alvaro Garcia. HSSM PHOTOS

Edinburg North Rebounding (Edinburg, Tx)-New head football coach Roy Garza takes over a struggling Edinburg North football program after going 1-8 in 2004 and 1-5 in District 315A. The Cougars return six starters on offense and four on defense. However, do not let this fool any team. “More players are coming out for the

program and we are seeing new players,” says Garza. On offense, tight end Julio Rodriguez (6-3,215, 4.7) will sit big on the line while junior free saftey Carlos Salinas (6-3, 175, 4.7) will give quarterbacks another reason not to pass in his direction. Projected starting quarterback Ramiro Ramirez will call the plays for the

Cougars offense; he will get the protection needed from OT Leroy Vasquez, OL Wally Gonzales, and OL Jason Moseno. Like the Weslaco Panthers, the Cougars have posted three wins over the past two seasons. According to Garza, he says that “his players are more dedicated and are looking forward to the upcoming

season. The Edinburg North Cougars open their season against Brownsville Rivera on September 2nd at home against another team facing new odds with a new coach. On Sept. 8th, the Cougars will travel to face McHi, followed by hosting Sharyland (9/16) before opening District 31-5A play with cross-town rival Edinburg Economedes on Sept. 23rd. Jaguars Missing RB

(Edinburg, Tx)- Now that the spotlight has switched to McAllen Memorial running back Bradley Stephens from District 30-5A, head football Oscar Salinas will trying to figure out a way to replace last year’s running back Ryan Richardson, who now plays for the Texas A&M Javelinas of Kingsville. The Jaguars ended their season tied for second place with PSJA North, with the Raiders clinching the playoff spot instead at 4-2. Only three starters return on offense after losing 32 lettermen for the 2005 season. Salinas knows that this will a rebuilding year for his Jags but he still believes that they will be competitive enough to give it a run for their August 2005

money. Players expected to see action are all-district members Nate Garza (5-11, 290, 5.2) at center with wide reciever Alex Rodriguez (60, 180, 4.9) returning. Other prospects include LG Luis Garza, and potential running back Roel Ramirez. The Jags have not finalized who will get the calls under center but everything that this team will experience will be set for next year. The Jaguars take to the road against last year’s State 5A Division II bi-district finalist Brownsville Pace on September 3rd and will then host 2004 Class 5A Division I Quarterfinalists, the La Joya Coyotes on (9/9) before opening district play against Edinburg North.

Harlingen

Cardinals On Track To Unseat Greyhounds? (Harlingen, Tx)- Cardinal head football coach Randy Cretors would love another rematch with Austin Westlake from Class 5A Division I 2005, but in order for Cretors to do just that, they must find a way to win the “Battle of the Arroyo”. The San Benito Greyhounds did the impossible by running the boards with a perfect season in District 325A last season. They also beat the Cardinals along the way in 2004, something that head coach Mario Pena of San Benito enjoyed and Cretors did not. This year will be different as the Harlingen Cardinals return 24 lettermen with four starters on offense and five on defense. Can the 9-3 Division I regional semifinalists dethrone the Greyhounds from the 32-5A district seat? Leading the way for the Redbirds will be QB Robert Sanchez (60,180.4.6), who moves in from wide receiver and will get plenty of help from linemen senior offensive tackle Josh Woodall (6-1,240,4.9). Mitch Cretors will get the catches

The Cards will be tough when it comes to punting and kick offs with senior P/ K Johnny Guillen (5-9,165 lbs,4.5) returning to give Cretors tough kicking game. Guillen averages 40 yards per punt. On defense, linebackers Michael Aguilar(6-0,210,4.6) and Tony Flores (5-10,185,

Coach Cretors says the Cardinals must deal with inexperience, especially at QB, where Sanchez (36558 receiving) takes over after playing wide reciever last season. The Cards host the Donna Redskins on September 3rd and then travel

(San Benito,Tx) The Greyhounds are already talking about another perfect season and another district title in 32-5A. San Benito returns 17 lettermen, with six starters on offense and a five on defense from a team that went 12-1 and a third round State 5A Division II regional semifinal appearance at the Alamodome last season. The Greyhounds are loaded with sizable players on both sides of the ball like tackle Rey Quintanilla (64, 275,5.1), and projected running back to lead the district, Ernie Tamez. He told RGV High School Sports Magazine that he wants to eclipse the 2,000 yards rushing barrier and why not? Last year he amassed more than 1,600 yards on the ground. On defense, LB Rey Carrizales (5-8,180.4.7), FS Ricardo Gonzales (6-1,175,4.8), and DE Joe Nunez (6-1,210, 4.8) will be counted on to stop the Cardinals when they clash at Harlingen stadium on October 28th. The Greyhounds open their season with road trips to Donna (9/9) and PSJA (9/16) before seeking a second straight District 32-5A title when they meet Brownsville Hanna in their district opener on September 23rd at home. As for the Harlingen Cardinals, they will be looking forward to hosting the Greyhounds for revenge in the “Battle of the Arroyo.”

Harlingen South Hawks Ready To Fly! (Harlingen, Tx)-After watching the Harlingen South Hawks out play Laredo Alexander in a controlled scrimmage, RGV High School Sports Magazine picks the Hawks to finish District 32-5A in a tie for third place with Los Fresnos. Let’s face it, with Harlingen and San Benito favored to hammer it out for the title in a tough district, a third place finish would only be a compliment for just surviving the season. Second-year head coach James Helms takes the field with 14 returning lettermen from a team that went 4-6 in season play and 3-4 in district. The Hawks will start the season with QB Randy Cavazos moving to the top spot from his running back position where he rushed for more than 700 yards in 2004.

Other players looking to add a spark are FS Daniel Zamora (60,180,4.6), junior CB Phillip Alcala (5-8,160, 4.65), DT Sylvester De Leon, LB Rick Robledo, and LB David Valdez. On offense, RB Ben Alaniz, TE Peter De La Garza, WR Albert Najar, and C Ralph Garza will be called on to make the big plays this season. The Hawks host Sharyland on Sept. 3rd.

Vikings Set To Battle 32-5A

(Brownsville, Tx)-The Brownsville Pace Vikings surprised everyone in 2004 by making the playoffs with an impressive 8-3 record and 5-2 District 32-5A finish. The Vikings return 18 lettermen with six starters back on both sides of the ball. Players to watch are OL Ivan Morales (6-2,285,5.15), DL Albert Almanza, OL Juan Morales, OL John Garza, OL Joseph Saenz, and OL Jerry Alegria. OL Morales earned all-district honors after not allowing a single sack. Head coach Rene Medrano talks about the much needed senior leadership that his team needs to encompass inorder to succeed again in 2005. The Vikings open their season on September 3rd at Sams Stadium with Edinburg Economedes and will then hit the road with games at McAllen Memorial (9/9), Brownsville Lopez (9/17), and Los Fresnos (9/23) before returning home to entertain the Harlingen Cardinals in their district opener on October 1st. Medrano knows that his team will be competitive again in 2005 and believes that with “hard work and dedication”, they will contend again in District 32-5A with another playoff spot.

(Mission, Tx) - I know what you are probably thinking: predicting both Mission High School and Mission Memorial Veterans High School football teams in the playoffs in 2005 would be totally insane? Think twice. Size. Size. Offensive line. Size. Get the picture? NFL quarterback Koy Detmer of the Philadelphia Eagles would love to come back home to Tom Landry Stadium and take over at quarterback for his Mission Eagles. After all, Detmer did lead his Eagles to the State 5A semi finals in 1990. Since his departure, the Eagles have dropped to Class 4A and have seen their Eagle pride split into two high schools to share with Mission Veterans Memorial H.S.. However, this will be a much improved and re-adjusted Eagle team. Head coach Tommy Lee will return 21 lettermen with three starters on

to describe the five offensive linemen who will tower over their 32-4A district counterparts in 2005. Offensive guard, junior Lee Roy Vargas, at 6’2 and weighs in at 260 pounds will team up with classmate Cesar Chavez, another six-foot two, two hundred and fifty-six pound tackle; both should compliment sophomore guard Alejandro Vera, who tips the scales at 342 pounds and stands at least sixfoot, one inch. Also setting up the routes for blocking and pancaking their opponents will be seniors Issac Weslaco East, Mission Veterans To Contend for Title Hernandez and Nasario Munoz. The Eagles have finished their offense and four on defense receivers Noe Hernandez and last two seasons with seven wins after going 3-4 in District Jesse Martinez. and twelve losses, not good enough “We will have an offensive 32-4A. Lee will be pleased to make the playoffs. Instead, they with his offensive line that line that could help us pave have watched their now cross-town averages some 265 lbs. with the way for our backs,” says rival, Mission Veterans Memorial (6’3, 346 lbs) Alejandro Vera third year Mission head make it to the playoffs last anchoring the pack. enrollment. Now we are beginning to see the growth from the middle schools which will give us about 90 incoming freshmen players this year,” adds Lee. Sophomore Nathan Salazar and junior Hector Acevedo will be competing for the center slot and Lee describes them as both young and talented. “These guys have the potential to move our offense. One runs, the other player throws pretty good. We will have to wait and see who starts,” said Lee. After finishing the season in 2004

with a 3-7 record, the Eagles will return kicker, Carlos Gonzales, wide receivers Jesse Martinez and Joshua Cedillo. In the back field, (5’8, 170 lbs.) Raul Cordova, a junior will see most of the running action for the Eagles. The Mission Eagles will open at home against McAllen Nikki Rowe on Friday, September 2nd at Tom Landry Stadium followed by another east rivalry,

the Sharyland Rattlers. The Eagles will open district play at Edcouch-Elsa on September 23rd with Lee describing his non-district schedule as “tough” in every aspect. “Anytime you play two playoff teams from the previous season and both are projected to do it again, this will be a test for our program early on,” added Lee. Note: RGV High School Sports Magazine will feature Rowe vs Mission in the T-Mobile Game of the Week.

32-4A Cross-Town Rival To Contend

Mission Veterans Memorial Too Tough (Mission, Tx)-Was last season’s playoff appearance a fluke for then-first year head coach Carlos Longoria and his Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots? “This past season, both Patriot’s teams won it all. The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl and we made history by making the playoffs for the first time in school history”, says Longoria. Despite losing 30 lettermen, the Pats’ return 24 lettermen with six starters on offense and seven on defense, which only means that experience will bring leadership to this team. Players expected to make things happen for the red and blue are seniors WR Albert Lara, RB Gerardo Acevedo, along with juniors OG Modesto Padilla, and center Raymond Mercado. The Patriots are picked by RGV High School Sports Magazine to finish third in 32-4A and hopefully, they will make another bi-district appearance after going 8-3 in 2004. Longoria feels that his team is “solid and physically fit” to make a run at a possible district title. In order for this mathematical equation to multiply, the Patriots will have to find a quarterback and hopefully six-foot-one, 185 lb. running back, Acevedo will add to his 450 rushing yards he piled up as a junior by following offensive guard Padilla, who stands at 6‘5, 312 lbs.. Other players expected to fill the gaps are Justin Luna, Rolando Cobios, Jaime Bautista, Hollywood Garza, Ryan Hernandez, Danny Cavazos, Aaron Pena, and Bobby Venegas. Defensive back, Flores will give opposing quarterbacks trouble if they choose to pass his way because he is highly regarded as an interception artist after having a great year in 2004 as a junior. He had three interceptions and 46 tackles, to compliment defensive end Gonzalez and his 75 tackles he too, hammered up. The Patriots will open their season by hosting their first game against the RGV High School Sports Magazine’s number-one ranked team in the Valley, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs on September 1st. “If we can stop the Mustangs running game and play solid defense, this will give us an idea about what to expect from the Pats in 2005,” says Longoria. Longoria knows that the Veteran Memorial Pats were slaughtered last year in the State 4A Division II playoffs by State 4A Quarter finalist, Gregory Portland by an embarassing 70-0 score. In District 32-4A, five teams will vye for a playoff berth in 2005: PSJA Memorial, Mission, Weslaco East, Edcouch-Elsa, and Mission Veterans Memorial. The big show down will be at PSJA Memorial on Oct. 6th when the Pats play on turf and then host Edcouch Elsa on October 14th. Both games will determine who makes the playoffs. HSSM PHOTOS

Adrian Garcia RB

Daniel Rosales RB

(Weslaco, Tx)-Head coach Armando Cuellar smiles when you ask him about their preseason schedule and surely, anyone would smile or smirk, knowing that, early on, this Weslaco East Wildcat team will be tested offensively and defensively in nondistrict. If the Wildcats survive, watch out District 32-4A! The Wildcats will travel to PSJA on September 1st to begin their quest for a perfect non-district schedule followed by hosting the Harlingen South Hawks on September 9th and will then wrap it up with running back sensation, Bradley Stephens and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs on September 16th at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco. “It’s going to be fun playing this schedule and if we can get by and win at least two, we will be set and primed for our district opener,” added Cuellar. If the Wildcats are going to light up the new $200,000 Video Screen Scoreboard on football friday nights, hopefully it will feature touchdown runs by last year’s running back sensation, Daniel Rosales (5’7, 165 lbs. 4.7 speed), who netted 1,200 yards rushing and 12 end zone scores. He will be the bulk of this Wildcat offense along with 19 lettermen returning to make Weslaco East a true contender in District 32-4A. The Wildcats will feature eight returning starters on offense with quarterback Jonathon Jimenez getting the nod under center to lead them in District 32-4A. Also seeing action will be another running back, Adrian Garcia; tackle Joe Salinas; OL Jesus Montalvo, TE Joe Salazar, OT Craig Alaniz, RB David Salinas, along with wide outs Mario Rios and Danny Ibarra will be counted on for duty. Cuellar enjoyed his best season yet as a Wildcat head coach by posting a 4-6 record and ending the district season with a close 4-3 record. “We were one game away from making the playoffs last year. It was real close,” added Cuellar.

La Maquina Ready to Defend Title (Edcouch,Tx)-The Yellowjackets will begin another season with high expectations and why not, these guys keep winning

year in and year out. Last year, head coach Joe Solis witnessed his players winning another 32-4A district title by

going undefeated with a perfect 7-0 finish. On the down side, the Yellowjackets failed to get past the first round of the State 4A Division II playoffs losing to Regional quarter finalist, the Calallen Wildcats 2827. The Wildcats have been a thorn in District 32-4A, but, “we should be strong on defense with eight starters back but with only two starters back on offense, we will be tested early on,” says Solis. Will this be enough to

contend with knowing that the Wildcats, Patriots, and Wolverines will all be on the prowl to take out the sting in these men in yellow and gold. On a bright spot, the Jackets return 26 lettermen to give them depth; Jeremy Burnios, Benito Garcia, and Luis Rodriguez will be called on to lead the defense. Other prospects include J.P. Galvan, Manny Porras, Ventura Guerra, Mark Cardenas, Eric Fox, and defensive end Javier Rodriguez. The Yellow Jackets ended the season ninth-

ranked in the State 4A AP polls. Edcouch-Elsa opens district play on September 23rd against a much improved Mission Eagles squad at home, which could test the defense for the first in the season. The Eagles will be able to defend against the an experienced Yellowjacket “D”, but that setting will have to wait until then. The ‘Jackets will entertain Hidalgo (8/26) and Tulso-Midway on (9/2) and then travel to Raymondville on September 16th in nondistrict action.

Mercedes Ready To Pass Attack

(Mercedes, Tx)-New football head coach and athletic director Gilbert Leal likes what he sees already in the pre-season after putting his Tigers to the test against State 3A powerhouse Port Isabel in a recent scrimmage. The Tigers will operate under a new scheme: a vicious passing attack . The new-look Mercedes Tigers team features more athletes and discipline with Leal calmly leading his team. With 27 returning lettermen, the Tigers will also have five starters back on offense, no wonder the Tarpons had trouble defending the pass, but most importantly, a hungry defense. The Tiger defense forced three fumbles against a shocked PI squad, but many 32-4A teams will be surprised to play against a different team attitude under Leal. Offensively, wide receivers Candy Velasquez and A.C. Chapa will be the go-to players with a potent passing attack. Leal will coach his first 32-4A game on the sidelines at Sams Stadium against Lopez on September 23rd. The Tigers could be the dark horse in District 32-4A.

Wolverines Destined for 32-4A Title?

(Pharr, Tx)- If you tell head football coach Joe Sanchez that his PSJA Memorial Wolverines are not destined to make the playoffs in 2005, you probably will be locked out of the stadium on Football Friday nights. The Wolverines return 20 lettermen, with five starters on both sides. The green and black made a bold run in 2004 by sneaking into the playoffs with a 4-3 record after going 4-7 for the season. This marked the third season that the Wolverines entered post season play in its school history and Sanchez feels that 2005 could be his fourth. “We are primed but we have to replace

some linemen that we lost last year,” adds Sanchez. Adding depth will be returning lettermen OL Josh Segovia, DL Juan Villapando, and QB Ricky Sustaita.

Hidalgo Kicks Off New Era (Hidalgo, Tx)-The Hidalgo Pirates kick off a new era with former Rio Grande City head football coach George Pena. Pirate Athletic Director, Albert Guerra resigned as head coach in 2004 to concentrate more on his state-bound baseball team. One question remains: Can Pena put together a thriving program at Hidalgo. “We were successful at San Benito last year by making it to the third round. We will try to improve here (Hidalgo) too,” says Pena. The Pirates ended their 2004 campaign with a 2-4 district finish but only managed to win three games for the season. Returning for the Pirates will be five starters on offense and defense which means that few holes remain to be filled. On

August 2005

offense, running back Jose Chavez, QB Jose Nava, RB Jesus Olivera, TE Sam Ramos, and guard, Josue Rodea all return to give the Pirates a complete back field to contend with for Pena. Last year, Olivera rushed for 800 yards and made it to the end zone six times. On defense, Mauricio Villegas returns as linebacker with 80 tackles netted in 2004, followed by secondary player Ezau Martinez who intercepted the ball three times to lead the Pirates. Look for the Pirates and Pena to be a much enhanced team from 2004 and do not be surprised if the Pirates stun Port Isabel and La Feria by making the playoffs in 2005.

(Port Isabel, Tx)-Rising out of the Laguna Madre, Port Isabel head coach Monty Strumbaugh knows that losing to Marlin in the State 3A Division II semi finals in 2003 was almost a dream season but his Tarpons are beginning to make it a habit by eclipsing the third round of the state playoffs each year. In 2004, the Tarpons, again reached the Regional quarter finals, only to lose to Hallettsville 10-0. If Strumbaugh expects to defend his District 32-3A crown in 2005, again, they must convince La Feria head coach Robert Valdez that the Tarpons will prove that this “Seawall” will prevail. The Lions enter this season ranked No.23 in Dave Campbell’s Football Magazine Top 25 poll sponsored by State Farm Insurance. The P.I. big tidal wave return only two starters on offense and three on defense after capturing the district title with a perfect 6-0 in 2004. The big question remains: Can the Tarpons put together another traditional winning season? Strumbaugh thinks they can succeed again, despite the low number of returning starters. “With 3A all-state defense end Estaban Delgadillo (6’0, 230lbs.) back to lead our defense, this will be the key to making this run successful. Team leadership plays a role this year,“ says the P.I. Coach. On defense, the Tarpons also return linebackers Ralph Valdez (5’9, 175lbs) and Frankie Espinoza (5’11, 190lbs). Valdez also gets the nod at running back, rushing for 510 yards and 5 tds in 2004. New additions to the Port Isabel offense are Carr Greiner taking over at quarterback with Oscar 26

Port Isabel

TARPONS

Ready for State? Tarpons picked to win district, La Feria to close in

Grisham seeing action at running back. Protecting Greiner are offensive linemen Abel Cisneros, Joey Furerow, Alex Moore, and Jesus Alaniz. With the Tarpons thinking about how to repeat as district title holders, head coach Robert Valdez at La Feria, knows that Port Isabel has managed to deny his Lions another District title and despite last year’s blowout loss to Zapata in the first round of the state playoffs, the Lions are excited with things to come in 2005. The Lions return seven offensive starters and six on defense. Players to watch on both sides of the ball will be HSSM pre-season All-South Texas picks LB/TE Dustin Bransom (6’2, 195 lbs) and OL/DL Jaime Vasquez (6’3, 270 lbs). Despite all the experience that these Lions might possess in 2005, the mystic ways of theTarpons seems to create a dense fog for Valdez’s teams in their season finales with the Tarpons. Will this be the year of the mighty Lion? Unless the La Feria Lions can overcome the loss of their transferred quarterback to Zapata, RGV High School Sports Magazine picks the Tarpons to win it all followed by another second place finish for the Lions. 32-3A Pre-Season Rankings Here is how RGV High School Sports Magazine ranks this district in 2005 Season

Bobcats Making A Run In 05’ (Rio Hondo, Tx)-This little town by the Arroyo might prove to be bigger than the flounders caught on the banks by Rio Grande Valley anglers. The Rio Hondo Bobcats return twenty starters to make a run at the 32-3A district title. Head coach Gus Cavazos knows that having 10 starters on offense and eight on defense all returning would only mean that no excuses would be accepted for anything less than a playoff season looming ahead. “We should be very competitive with the experience we have on

the field,” says Cavazos. As he watched his players at RGV High School Sports Magazine’s Photo Day held August 6th at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco, you could sense his vote of confidence as he watched other players from the district have their photos taken. With tight end Jonathon Medina, a 6’4, 265 lb returning, he could help the Bobcats move their offense along with running back Robbie Mesa, a senior, who rushed for more than 600 yards in 2004. “We are excited and we know that we will be the underdog,” says Cavazos.

On defense, the Bobcats will be potent. Returning lettermen playing both sides off the field will be defensive end Medina, along with DE 6’1, 275 lbs, Adam Atkinson; others contributing to make the Bobcats contenders will be DL Leroy Juarez, LB Ryan Garcia, LB Eric Gant, DB Carlton Welch, and DB Eric Jaime. Lions QB Transfers to Zapata (La Feria, Tx)-Lions head football coach Robert Valdez says, “we will be contending for the district title again. Hopefully, we will win it and advance further in the playoffs.” Maybe. Now that quarterback Justin Ramirez transferred to Zapata, the La Feria Lions (6-3, 5-1) ranked No. 25 in Class 3A by Dave Campbell’s State Farm polls might now change. However, Valdez knows that polls do not mean

a thing when you play rivalries like Port Isabel and Hidalgo. “Playing these type of games with teams like the Tarpons and Pirates, what matters is who shows up,” says Valdez. Despite last year’s heart breaking loss to Zapata 20-14 in the bidistrict round of the state 3A Division I playoffs, the Lion’s will have to play this season without starting quarterback, Ramirez. The Lions return only 6

offensive starters and 6 on defense. Players to watch on both sides of the ball will be HSSM pre-season All-South Texas picks LB/TE Dustin Bransom (6’2, 195 lbs) and OL/DL Jaime Vasquez (6’3, 270 lbs). Returning on offense are running back Manuel Perez who rushed for almost 1,000 yards last season and on defense, NT Albert Garrett (6’0, 240lbs), and LB Rene Galvan should beef up the Lion defense.

(Lyford, Tx)-Call them the Dawgs if you may, but the Lyford Bulldogs want a another repeat season like 2004 because this would only mean that head football coach Jaime Infante would be in the playoffs again. The Dogs surprised everyone last year in District 32-3A by posting an impressive 7-4 season record and

third place finish with a 4-2. Furthermore, the Dawgs defeated Wes Oso of Corpus Christi 10-9 to win the Bi-District Crown in Class 3A Division II. Lyford would end their season the following week, bowing out to Devine 33-6 in the Area playoffs. Only in his second year, Infante returns 13 lettermen with eight

coming back on defense. Players to look for are DT Justin Valdez, LB Joey Rios, LB Joe Roy Delgado, DE Sonny Lopez, and FS Ramon Moya. Returning lettermen on offense are OG Victor Moreno, FB Felix Silva, RB Larry Mendez, and OG Louie Medina.

Progreso Ants might Sting (Progreso,Tx)-Can Elvis rock his way back into the playoffs with the number one running back in 2005? Second-year head coach Elvis Hernandez would love to see his team improve from last year’s rebuilding season as the Red Ants posted only two wins for the season and went 0-6 in 32-3A, and a last place finish. For the Progreso Red Ants, the red and black are use to placing last year in and year out, but this could change with running back Norbert Ontireres coming back after posting a 1,000 yard season in 2004. The 5’9, 160 lb. running back will be counted on to lead his offense with wide-receivers Sam Cameron

and Martin Ontireres retrurning. On defense, the Red Ants will need to fill gaps which allowed 350 yards in total offense to their opponents. Hopefully, returning lettermen, linebacker Hector Salazar, LB David Salazar, and DE Edgar Castillo will help lead this endeavor. “The King” and his Red Ants will travel to face the Premont Cowboys on September 2nd and they will face Santa Rosa (9/9) on the road before coming home to their newly built Red Ant Stadium on September 15th to take on MMA. The Red Ants will open season play at home against the Rio Hondo Bobcats. Can the Red Ants sting their opponents with their running attack?

BearKats Ready To Improve (Raymondville, Tx)-With all the controversy surrounding the newly built football stadium, only a winning season might quiet all the non-supporters from this Willacy County brush land. If the Raymondville BearKats improve from last season’s 45 record and 2-4 district finish,; one reason will be the soft hands of junior quarter back Carlo Dominguez and his running duo of

Jerry Muniz (5’10, 188 lbs.) and Joel Reta (5’8, 175 lbs.). Both backs combined for almost 1200 yards rushing in 2004 if Dominguez can sit in well, moving up from the junior varsity to replace Tommy Wolfe, the Bearkats should give opponents in 2005 much to worry about. Second year head coach Rene De La Garza knows that losing twentyfive lettermen would only means a disatorous season could be instored for Raymondville.

La Villa, Santa Rosa Primed (Santa Rosa, Tx) These two teams have something in common: a Sugar Bowl. No, not the NCAA Sugar Bowl played in New Orleans but instead, played in the sugar cane fields where both teams sit in these farming communities with less than 1,000 in population. Both, La Villa Cardinals and the Santa Rosa Warriors have not made the playoffs in the last five years, but they always have something to play for each year: their annual rivalry entitled the “Sugar Bowl”. In 2005, both teams combined for a total win/loss record of 1-18 season record and a combined 1-9 district standing in 32-2A. The lone win was at the Sugar Bowl game won by Santa Rosa. Warrior head coach Ubaldo Pena understands that losing eight games in 2004 could only mean that his

team is rebuilding. Santa Rosa returns eight offensive and defensive starters with seniors Harvey Flores (WR), Sam Salidvar (DB), and Steve Coshilla (OT) leading the way. As for the winless Cards, new head coach Joe Salinas is hoping that his eight returning starters on both sides of the ball will create at least one win. Yes, the Sugar Bowl game.

Ramirez, an Art Instructor at Edinburg High School will provided Editorial/ Opinion cartoon scenes and will also create a series of “On The Sidelines with Touchdown Dave” comic strip in every issue. “Smarty Cartoons will be a great addition to our staff. He is talented and creative. We know that our readers will enjoy his work in our publication,” says HSSM publisher, David A. Amador. Smarty Cartoons has been featured in several articles, and TV interviews in Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley. He was also featured as a Top Story on Eyewitness News 5. Many readers will remember his works that were published in The

Monitor newspaper in the Editorial sections. Ramirez says that, “this will be a new challenge for me” and he hopes that drawing sports cartoons will take him in a different direction. Ramirez was always interested in art. He started drawing cartoons at an early age in high school using crayons and pencils. He was always known as the “artist” in school. During his college years at Del Mar in Corpus Christi, Texas, he had his first comic strip published entitled “smarty”…which later became “smarty cartoons”. Now after 12 years of teaching, Ramirez is ready to take his work to a new level and hopefully, he will gain more attention through his “sometimes controversial” art expressions. You can visit his website at www. smartycartoons.com for more information.

offensive and seven defensive returning starters. Quarterback Ruben Salazar, a six-foot-three senior will take over again with seniors, LT Adam Herrera (6‘0, 220lbs.), RG Noe Yanez, and 5’8, 165lbs. running back Domingo Lugo contributing. With Lugo rushing for more than 500 yards last season, look for the Cougars to be much improved in 2005.

On defense, expect the Cougars corner back safety Jesse Chavez to add experience and depth with seven more returning lettermen. Others contributing are newcomers center Adolfo Hinojosa, RB Froilan Gaitan, and OG Nathan Yanez. The Santa Maria Cougars are the only Class A school in the Rio Grande Valley playing football and according to Villarreal, he’s excited about the

2005 season. The Cougars are picked to finish second in District 32-1A by RGV High School Sports magazine and look for Santa Maria to challenge Agua Dulce, a preseason district favorite in 32-1A. Ben Bolt-Palito, last season’s district`s champion will also contend for another district title after finishing at 4-0. The Badgers lost to Flatonia 28-7 in the first round of the State Class 1A playoffs in 2004. Here are RGV HSSM predictions for District 32-1A:

(Santa Maria, Tx) In a quiet community lying just southeast on Military Highway, a few miles next to the Mexican border, new head football coach, Raul Villarreal will be taking over a program which needs much attention in Class 1A. For Villarreal, being at the right place at the right time would mean that the Cougars might see a playoff berth this season for the first time in school history. Not bad for Villarreal in his first year as athletic director and new skipper. The Santa Maria Cougars finished with a 6-4 record in 2004 and managed an impressive 2-2 district record in 32-1A, but will now challenge pre-season district favorite Agua Dulce. TEXAS

Longhorns

Headed Back To Rose By David A. Amador, HSSM Sportswriter

(Austin, Tx)-Are the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns destined for another Rose Bowl win in 2005, but this time with hopes of claiming a BCS National Championship title? In order for this happen, Longhorn junior quarterback Vince Young will have to lead Texas this season without the services of first round Chicago Bear running back draftee, Cedric Benson. The orange and white will have their hands full when they open their 2005 campaign hosting Louisiana-Lafayette on September 3rd before traveling to their much anticipated game with the Ohio State Buckeyes on September 17th. The Horns no longer are strangers in Pasadena, California after last year’s Rose Bowl 38-37 comeback win over the Michigan Wolverines. Young was spectacular rushing for 192 yards and scoring four rushing touchdowns. Young is not getting any younger; instead, he is only getting better. While UT head coach Mack Brown knows that his offense will

probably be operating from the shotgun, he still has not decided who will accompany Young in the one-slot back field.

In 2004, Texas averaged 466.0 yards of total offense per game and added 53 scoring touchdowns with 302 yards rushing.

Tough Defense! The Longhorns allowed less than 105 rushing yards to opponents in 2004.

Bowl?

Three contenders will be vying for this opportunity to play with an experienced offensive line and quarterback.

Looking to take over Benson’s position will be true freshmen Jamaal Charles, sophomore Ramonce Taylor (5’11, 195lbs) and red shirt junior veteran, Selvin Young will both battle it out for this much prized position. Young and Young are best friends but if Selvin expects to join his friend in the back field he will have to stay healthy and keep

his academics up to par. Young (6’0, 230lbs) is recovering from a disturbing sprained ankle and missed spring workouts which opened the way for the other two underclassman. The Big Twelve Longhorns (10-1, 7-1) feature four returning offensive linemen which will be the key to paving the way for quarterback Vince Young.

Last year, Young frustrated opposing defenses by rushing for 1,079 yards and 14 touchdowns. Returning starters are senior LT Jonathon Scott (6’7, 310lbs), junior LG Kasey Studdard (6’3, 295lbs), senior RG Will Allen (6’6, 315lbs), and junior RT Justin Blalock (6’4, 330lbs). Tight-end senior David Thomas also returns to give Texas, according to Brown, “their best

offensive line since his nine year stay in this capital city.” On defense, the Longhorns will depend on senior LB Aaron Harris (6’0, 245lbs) who had a break out year in 2004 with 118 tackles. Others looking to contend for the linebacker slots are sophomore Robert Killebrew (6’2, 225lbs), red shirt freshmen Rashad Bobino (5’11, 235lbs), and Eric Foreman, a 6’4, 230lbs. Sophomore. All four down linemen on defense return to give the Longhorns another rugged-barbed wired fence for opposing offenses. Seniors Larry Dibbles (6’2, 285lbs) and Rodrique Wright (6’5, 330lbs) both will lead returning juniors Tim Crowder (6’4, 255lbs) and Brian Robinson (6’3, 265lbs). If Texas expects to meet probable two-time Heisman trophy winner, 4-year letterman QB Matt Leinhart and his two-time defending National Champions USC Trojans, the Horns’ must first contend with Ohio State, Oklahoma, and the Texas A&M Aggies. The Buckeyes destroyed Big Twelve opponent Oklahoma State 33-7 in the Alamo Bowl held in San Antonio, Texas in 2005. Could this be the year that the Longhorns beat OU? Could this be the year that Texas wins the Big 12 title? Could this be the year that Texas wins the BCS National Championship in Pasadena, California? Texas head coach Mack Brown knows that this will be the year he has been waiting for since coming to Austin, Texas nine years ago. “Hopefully we will go to Pasadena again and play for a National title,” adds Brown.

McNeal’s Aggies Ready for Comeback

(College Station, Tx)-Head coach Dennis Franchione, now in his second year, understands that after guiding his team to an impressive 7-4 season and a 2005 Cotton Bowl berth, more work needs to be done if the Aggies expect to take their season to a BCS game. Earvin Taylor, formerly of Mission High School will be the go-to guy for quarterback Reggie McNeal. At 6’3, sophomore Taylor should be a big target after gaining 10 pounds during the off season to tip the scales at 215 pounds. Opposite to Taylor will be senior DeQawn Mobley, also at 6’2 and 205 lbs. Both players should give the Aggies their best receiving corps in a long time. Last year McNeal exploded for more than 700 yards rushing and aired it out for 2, 791 yards with only one interception in eight games. In the backfield, the Aggies will be loaded with RB Courtney Lewis, who also rushed for 1,000 yards as a freshmen and 700 yards as a sophomore. With explosive talent like these fearsome four, how could the Aggies not improve?

(Dallas, Texas) Bill Parcells knows football. Parcells knows Bledsoe. Parcells knows how to gamble. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones must know Parcells well enough to allow him to gamble on quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Now is his third year, Bill Parcells seems to be back tracking instead of moving forward. Parcells is surrounding himself with his former players who once took him to the promise land of winning football games. Parcells also replaced some of his coaching staff with new faces by adding three new assistants and firing four. Terry Glenn, Keyshawn Johnson, and now Drew Bledsoe, former pupils of Parcells are now together wearing the blue and silver star with this much determined head coach who feels that bringing former players back might be the right move until his younger players blend in and get some experience with winning big games. The Dallas Cowboys enter their third season under Parcells after posting a 106 and 6-10 records in his first two seasons. One season was a playoff appearance. Since then, the Cowboys have been trying to find out what gels and what does not give. Along the way, the Cowboys have discovered one the NFL’s finest tight ends with Jason Witten, (87 catches 980 yards, 6 tds) and took a risk by allowing rookie running back Julius Jones of Notre Dame to show what he could really prove to Parcells in 2004. Jones did just that by rushing for 819 yards on 197 carries and averaged 4.1 yards per carry. Former N.Y. Jets pupil, Keyshawn Johnson caught 70 passes for 981 yards to give Dallas a spark on offense with aging quarterback and former pupil, Vinny Testeverde passing for 3,532 yards August 2005

COWBOYS

Super Again? Head coach Bill Parcells reunited with Drew Blesodoe

and DE Marcus Spears, 6’4 300lbs., of Louisiana State to eliminate the frustrations of not making the big plays and thus, creating more of a pass rushing game with the Cowboy’s new 3-4 defense set to debut in September. Tragically, Spears went down with an injury in the preseason. The Cowboys also picked up two more defensive linemen, 6’7, 290lbs. Chris Canty of Virginia and Jay Ratliff, a 6’4, 295lbs of Auburn. Ware is predicted to be the starting defensive end when the Cowboys switch to the 4-3 and a pass rusher from the outside when at 3-4. With Greg Ellis and La’Roi Glover already set, expect the Cowboys to add some depth with a rotation of players coming in and out with fresh legs, something Parcells had been seeking with patience. The Cowboys will be a much improved team on defense so look for quarterback Bledsoe to enjoy the season he has been wishing for since coming to the NFL. Bledsoe will be the key to bringing this team back to glory now that Dallas has discovered Jones in the backfield. At Buffalo, Bledsoe led the Bills in 2004 to 9-7 record and passed for more than 2,900 yards with 20 touchdowns and 395 points in total offense. Looks like the Dallas Cowboys are going to be super again in 2005! 2005 Dallas Cowboys SCHEDULE

(Houston, Texas) Houston Texan fans are wondering what to expect in 2005. Texan Quarterback David Carr knows that these fans are expecting playoffs for the first time in franchise history and fans should expect more from Carr, now entering his fourth season with Houston, after all, he was their number one pick three seasons ago. Head coach Dom Capers enters his fourth season with the Texans and he has seen his team make progress in their first three years by going 4-12, 5-11, and 7-9 in 2004. He also knows that the Texans lost five games by less than seven points each. The Texans were one of just six teams featuring a high powered offense with Carr passing for 3,531 yard; his main target, Andre Johnson accounted for 1,142 yards on 79 catches, while rookie running back Domanick Davis pounded defenses with 1,188 yards on the ground. That’s the positive side. The negative side was that the Texan offensive line gave up 49 quarterback sacks, which ranked them 26th in the league and if fans expect Carr to improve his passing ratio of 83.5 (a career best), then returning linemen Seth Wand, Chester Pitts, Steve McKinney, Todd Washington, and Todd Wade will have to protect Carr more and give him ample time to get things moving. Right tackle Victor Riley (6’5, 340 lbs) comes to Houston from New Orleans with hopes of defending Carr from rugged defensive players. According to Capers, he feels that his defense will be much improved after releasing cornerback Aaron Glenn and linebackers Jay Foremen and Jamie Sharper. The Texans will fill these gaps with Antwan Peek, Kailee Wong, and Zeke Moreno after posting just 24 sacks in 2004. Defensive back Dunta Robinson had a tremendous year in 2004 by intercepting 6 passes will also 34

TEXANS Waiting On Carr After three seasons, QB David Carr Expected To Win

be back to give the Texans a new defensive scheme. Capers feels that he will have “more competition” from his players who want starting positions. In the 2005 draft, the Texans feel that they picked a good one when Florida State defensive Tackle was available as the 16th pick. His presence on the field will add to Caper’s rebuilding line of defense. Johnson joins Robaire Smith, Gary Walker, and Seth Payne, who re-signed at the beginning of the season. For Payne, re-signing and staying in Texas was special. After all, he likes this modern city where his wife Brandi had his first child this past May. In 2003, Payne locked his knee on the turf against New Orleans and torn his ACL. Payne is expected to be ready to make an impact, despite his set back of injuries. On special teams, the Texans signed Reggie Swinton of the Dallas Cowboys so this should add some spark on returns. The Houston Texans open their regular season September 11th on the road at Buffalo and then return on September 18th to host the AFC Division champs, Pittsburgh Steelers. If the Texans expect to make this season their playoff year, the Texan’s offense needs to protect David Carr, in order to allow him to find his receivers in the red zone week after week.
