PUBLISHER’S LETTER
There is something really cool to be said about the fact that I get to do what I do. In fact; there’s a lot to be said about it. Each time out I get to work with some really great women who for some of them shooting is an expression of their sexy side. Something that perhaps they don’t get to indulge during their day jobs. This issue took some doing to make happen and I wasn’t entirely sure that this issue was going to even see the light of day. I had planned on getting this whole thing done the week prior to it hitting the digital newsstands. This issue represents the first time I’ve actually linked our pages here with our pages on our website at HighSpeedMag.Com! I find that pretty exciting. Enough of that. This month we have the sultry Rebekah Shibao on our cover making her the HighSpeed Diva for December 2018. I don’t know if it’s just me; but sometimes Rebekah reminds me of the legendary Dylan Johnson. They share the same epic hair and smiles that can melt iceburgs. You’ll understand when you see Rebekah’s layout if you don’t already know. She’s also the one who is the launch Diva for the new HighSpeed Magazine. Her shoot was of her own
creation as she’d mentioned to me that she’d always wanted to shoot at a mechanic’s shop. Well it took me a little over a year to find the place and put it together but we did and she of course hit it out of the park. Opening the issue is the lovely Ashley Allen in her first appearance in the book. Following behind her is Kadelyn McBrearty who I recently found out is a die hard Backstreet Boys fan. Coming in at an even five feet tall Kadelyn is the shortest girl I’ve shot so far for the magazine. The great thing about each one of these ladies is the wonderful attitudes they each bring to the table. Enthusiasm and excitement make the set a fun place to be. I of course want to thank the team that helped make these shoots come together. Gabriella Simmons, Cristina Olivito, and Simran Oberoi, who did amazing work with these ladies. Folks; I do sincerely hope that you enjoy this issue. Please hit me up on Social Media or via email and let me know your thoughts and ideas. Regards DJ

2019 CHEVROLET BOLT EV
When you hear the words Electric Vehicle (EV) most people have one of two ideas go through their minds; Tesla or golf cart. At least that has been my experience since the first modern EV hit the market in 1990. Fueled (pardon the pun) by California’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, General Motors unveiled the EV-1, to meet the mandates requirements. This first-generation mass produced EV hit quite a few milestones including setting a speed record of 187 mph in 1994. Since then other car makers, big and small, have tested the EV waters with their version of the next best thing. With a resurgence in the EV market, heavy hitters in the auto market have stepped up to the plate with their best. Leading the EV movement, GM came with a heavy bat; The 2019 Chevy Bolt. Quickly, interest has surrounded the emerging EV market. Patrons are commonly looking for the basic qualifier; COST! Early EV’s, although good on long term savings at the pump, didn’t offer much in the way of resale value or maintenance and repair costs. Do to R&D being at its infancy when it came to battery technology, this seemed to be the biggest deterrent from investing $50 - $70k in a car that was intended to first and foremost, save you money. Chevrolet, an industry leader in automotive innovation came out swinging for the fences and hit a screaming homerun like LA Dodgers, Kirk Gibson, in game 1 of the 1988 World Series! Leading the pack against other EV giants like Tesla, Toyota and Nissan, the Chevy Bolt emerged NUMBER ONE in rankings by US News &World Reports, The Car Connection reviews, and received 4.5 out of 5 stars by Edmunds giving the Bolt their prestigious Top-Rated Electric Vehicle for 2018. Out of the box the Chevy Bolt delivers an impressive 238mile range on a single charge. Additionally, the Bolt exceeded industry standards with an average 128-mile city & 110-mile highway. This MPGe rating is based on miles per gallon gasoline equivalent measure of the distance traveled per unit of energy consumed. The difference between city and highway mileage can be attributed to lower average speed and the advance designed regenerative braking system. Simply put, regenerative braking utilizes the forward motion of the wheels to capture the energy produced when braking to add charge at the battery. This motion is essentially wasted in normal friction braking systems found on internal combustion engine vehicles. Style over function does not apply here. Chevrolet design teams have meticulously ensured that every cubic centimeter of the Bolt serves as efficiently as intended. There is ample room for up to five passengers giving ease of access with the four-door design. 22. HIGHSPEED Magazine December 2018 | HighSpeedMag.Com
Safety is, as always, top of the list with GM, offering lane change alert, and side blind zone alert systems, forward and side impact airbags, and increased forward crumple zone, earning the Chevy Bolt the Insurance Institutes for Highway Safety (IIHS) top-rating. Quoting the IIHS report “The Bolt earns good ratings in all five of the Institute’s crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. It also has an optional front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating. The car avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph, and the system has a forward collision warning component that meets National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.” So, you think that this little guy can’t get out of its own way? Think again! With a standard 200 horsepower, the Bolt reaches speeds more than 90mph; more than enough for any US highway. Compared to the Toyota Prius at 121hp and Nissan Leaf at 147hp, dollar for dollar the Bolt continues to shine as best value. Let’s not forget our initial concern about resale value along with maintenance and repair costs. In every way Chevy has made the Bolt affordable and cost efficient. Other EV’s are still saddled with large, heavy, expensive batteries that tend to have a short life span when compared to comparable vehicles. Professor John Kelly, of the Univ. of Utah, has completed a series of videos comparing Lithium-Ion battery technology and consumer warnings between the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. Quoting from an article in Green Car Reports “Kelly’s summary concludes Chevrolet’s thermal management of its batteries is “far superior” to that provided by Nissan in the Leaf, both the previous generation and the new 2018 version. Broadly, it now seems safe to suggest that electric-car batteries with active liquid cooling (and heating) seem to have lower rates of capacity loss—especially under extreme conditions—than do those that use only passive air cooling, such as the Leaf’s.” Additionally, Chevy is utilizing a 60 kWh Li-ion multi-module battery. Why is this significant? Cost! If a single cell in the module goes bad then that battery can have the faulty component replaced; just the single cell. Unlike other EV batteries where if one cell goes bad the entire battery needs to come out and a costly new one installed. The tides are a changing, my friends. With every dollar being spent needs to count for two, wise decisions need to be made. If you’re thinking that an EV is in your future, take the time and do your research. Test drive and compare and be ready to do some extensive reading on charging times and battery life and the difference between warranties. Putting all comparable EV’s priced starting at $36,620, one name stands alone; Bolt by Chevrolet. -

10 THANKSGIVING ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR HOSTS/GUESTS TO FOLLOW Photo by Gabriel Garcia Marengo on Unsplash
Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner or will be a guest in someone’s home, there are some basic rules of etiquette to follow. What do you need to know? Sharon Schweitzer, an international etiquette expert, author, and found of Access to Culture, offers these 10 tips: - Seating Plan & Place Cards: As the host, keep the cast of family, friends, distant relatives, neighbors and old friends in line with a seating plan. Seat introverts next to out-going guests and elders adjacent to youngsters. It’s acceptable to split married couples but not newlyweds. Place cards may range from simple and handmade to fancy. As a guest, RSVP within 48 hours of receiving the invitation. - Conversation Starters: As the host (hostess), you want the attitude of gratitude at your table and to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. Plan interesting conversation starters for your guests. For example, ‘What are you grateful for this year?’ Other examples include upcoming or past travel, musical events, bestselling books, newly released movies, food, sports and holiday memories. - Prying Questions: Prying, personal questions can push all the wrong buttons. Two of the most popular offending questions continue to be: “Are you seeing anyone yet?” and “When 24. HIGHSPEED Magazine December 2018 | HighSpeedMag.Com
are you going to give me grandkids?” Be prepared, and respond with humor so the questioner doesn’t sense a weak spot. ‘I avoid visiting about private topics at delicious holiday meals with more interesting things to discuss.’ - Politics: Just say ‘no’ to conversations about politics. While it may be tempting, biting your tongue and staying quiet is a good idea if you don’t want to start a political brawl when everyone should be enjoying perfectly roasted turkey. Do be up to date on current events, but avoid topics that fall under politics, religion or sex. - Rogue Guest: All hosts know the possibility of something going sideways exists when family, friends, and alcohol are involved during high-stress holidays. If a guest goes rogue, ranting about politics or family drama, be prepared with an immediate change to a safe topic like Aunt Carol’s stuffing recipe or Uncle Ben’s pumpkin pie. If they continue unabated, politely ask if you can speak to them privately. When out of earshot and eyesight of other guests, acknowledge their concerns and advise them Thanksgiving isn’t the time
or place. There’s no need to embarrass them in front of family and friends. - Arrive with Offerings: A great guest never shows up emptyhanded. If you have any special dietary needs, bring a gluten free (or sugar-free, or nut-free, etc.) side dish. Remember to bring food ready-to-serve (serving spoon and all) and wine pre-chilled. Try not to encroach on kitchen or refrigerator space. Call or text your host on Wednesday, asking if they need any last-minute items. -Be an Extra Set of Eyes (or Hands): As a guest, observe how the day is going and tune in to wherever help might be needed. If your host denies your offer to help in the kitchen, designate yourself as the resident babysitter, DJ or coat-check clerk. You can also offer to take out the trash, walk the dog or whatever will help free up your host and make the day run smoother. - Leave the Toast to the Host: Some guests don’t realize that giving the first toast as a guest is a big taboo. The host—the curator of the evening—deserves to make the initial toast. If you’re itching to make a big announcement
or show your appreciation to the hardworking host, ask them privately when they will be making their toast so you know when your turn is coming. If you are toasted as a guest or host, do not raise your glass and drink. It’s like clapping for yourself. Remember the 3 B’s of toasting: begin, be brief and be seated. Know the Schedule of Events: As the host, set a Thanksgiving Day schedule so you and your guests may plan their day, and avoid chaos. As a visitor, ask in advance about the schedule so you may plan accordingly. If you arrive at 12, is dinner served at 1:00 or 3:00 p.m.? This allows you to plan to visit other friends and family, and avoid too much ‘together time.’ Games & Activities: Physical activity is a great stress-reliever. As the host, plan a number of outside activities for your guests. Encourage them to engage in a flag football or soccer game, rake leaves or go on a neighborhood walk. Outdoor board games are always a hit with children and adults alike. As part of your Thanksgiving coverage, please consider using these tips from Sharon. If you’d like to speak to her or have her contribute more, just let me know. http://www.protocolww.com/

SHOOT NOTES:
O
ne of the toughest parts of working with Rebekah is the culling of images. There is always so much good stuff and I am usually angry at myself for being the one who messes up the shots. When I first met and shot with Rebekah back in 2017 she told me that she’d been wanting to find an auto repair shop to shoot in. Of course I was down for this opportunity no doubt. Thanks to a friend of mine we were able to get our hands on a great place. Michael’s Auto Repair in Glendora, California. It was a great place to shoot no doubt. We arrived at the location and Gabriella went to work at glamming Rebekah up. While I set up a single strobe. There wasn’t need for much more. The truck we shot on was just sitting there and was pretty perfect for the story we were going for. This is Rebekah’s second shoot for HIGHSPEED
Magazine and this was absolute fire. Or at least I sure think so. The last shoot we did together about a year ago didn’t go so well as everything went wrong. Well everything except the ladies who came out to shoot. They were awesome! Check out HighSpeedMag.Com For Rebekah’s interview and some additional images, or scan the code below.

2019 Lexus RC With the Lexus brand’s dedication to high performance and world-class craftsmanship, drivers can count on an emotional driving experience with the RC coupe.
BALANCE OF POWER
The idea of “sharper and more graceful” defines the LC flagship, so Lexus engineers have applied the same concept to the new RC. This included enhancing the car’s aerodynamics and fine-tuning the suspension system and powertrain. Armed with a more stable ride quality and sharper handling characteristics, the new RC is more athletic and responsive than ever. Enhanced aerodynamics — such as a new fin shape on the side window mold and a duct on the rear bumper that improves air flow, result in improved stability. New available 19-in. wheels and tires with increased grip deliver excellent steering response. Stiffer suspension bushings have been incorporated along with new shock absorbers which provide significant damping force from low suspension stroke speeds. Thanks to a significant amount of real-world testing that allowed constant fine-tuning by the chassis engineers, the new RC delivers an extremely supple ride quality and razor-sharp handling characteristics. Lexus RC 300 rear-wheel drive is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. This smooth operator produces 241 horsepower with 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 1,650-4,400 rpm. It’s
paired with an eight-speed sport direct-shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters and consumes fuel at a rate of 21 mpg city / 30 mpg highway / 24 mpg combined manufacturer estimated fuel economy. The RC 300 all-wheel drive has a 3.5-liter V6 engine. It produces 260 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. torque at 2,000-4,800 rpm, and is teamed with a sixspeed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The RC 350 gets a 311-horsepower version of the V6. With rear-wheel drive, it gets the eight-speed Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters; with all-wheel drive, it’s a six-speed automatic.
STRIKING STYLE AND COLOR
Lexus designers kept the RC’s dynamic coupe proportions, while enhancing features that are pleasing to the eye. Influenced by the flagship LC sporty coupe, every angle of the RC provides a striking view. Moreover, the RC demands attention with its new sleek front grille, headlamps and taillamps. The luxury coupe also comes with new standard 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch wheels available) with a distinctive split-5-spoke design. In addition, a total of 10 different exterior colors will be available for the RC, including a new vibrant color, Blue Vortex Metallic.
REFINED INTERIOR
Drivers will feel right at home in the luxury coupe cabin. To enhance the look and feel of the interior, a new Dark Gray Streamline treatment has been applied to the heater control and audio panels. The
design also includes enlarged knee pads to create a heightened sense of space, a new analog clock and cup holder. For the 2019 RC, Lexus offers six different combinations of interior trim. Colors for the standard coupe include Glazed Caramel, Playa and Black. The RC F SPORT models will get three new bold colors: Circuit Red, Black with Yellow Accents and White.
DRIVE MODE SELECT: LISTENS TO YOU
The RC listens to the driver through the Drive Mode Select system. On standard models Drive Mode Select tailors the vehicle’s throttle response, electric power steering and climate settings with a choice of Normal, Eco or Sport modes. F SPORT adds Sport S+ mode for maximum performance from the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and a Custom mode which lets the driver personalize the vehicle’s response.
F SPORT: Experience Amazing
The 2019 RC F SPORT gets new features exclusive to the coupe which include a sleek grille mesh pattern and sharp 19-inch alloy wheels influenced by the Lexus flagship LS and LC models.
Safety is a Staple with Lexus
Lexus Safety System+ is standard, which includes Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, High Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane
Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Intelligent High-Beams. Also, Lexus Enform Safety Connect is complimentary for the first 10 years of ownership with access to Lexus Enform response centers 24/7/365. The 2019 RC has an available Blind Spot Monitor (BSM). This feature is designed to assist the driver when changing lanes by providing information not only about vehicles in the side mirror blind spot zones, but also by helping to detecting vehicles approaching from the rear in adjacent lanes. The option also includes Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), which helps detect approaching vehicles from both rear sides to assist the driver when backing out of a parking space or driveway. The 2019 RC 300/350 models are set to arrive at dealerships in November 2018 with a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the following: RC 300 RWD - $41,145 RC 300 AWD - $43,835 RC 350 RWD - $44,075 RC 350 AWD - $46,240 Lexus stands true to its tradition by offering high performance, style and safety in a luxury coupe — the 2019 RC.
