to the Hiho Silver Country Shows Journal Hello and welcome to this issue of the Hiho Country Shows Journal and, we have to say, it’s a great one!
We’re sponsoring best dressed at the trot up at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this year, and we’re pretty excited about this! To celebrate this, we have a great feature from Sophie Callahan about her experience as part of the Hiho team at Badminton earlier this year. We also have style tips from our very own Harriet Edwards, aka, A Girl About Country. In addition to providing us with great looks for the trot up, Harriet has worked with Burghley to style one of the riders – we can’t wait to see how she looks! Doris, from Doris & Co, has shared some of her favourite finds that you can expect to see at Burghley. She had a chat with some of her stand holder friends to bring you a sneak peek of what’s new and noteworthy. And what a collection! Andrew is Hiho Silver’s very own ‘King of the Road’. If you’ve visited a Hiho stand at any event, the chances are you’ve seen him on it with his courtly ladies! When he’s not there, he’s busy designing the stand or sourcing beautiful jewellery for us.
Emma is best known in her role as Managing Director (or Queen Bee) at Hiho Silver, but she has many, many other strings to her bow! She supports lots of small businesses with their growth plans and works mainly on creative growth ideas.
Rhea specialises in anything equestrian and in addition to running her own PR and marketing agency in this area, she’s also a part of the Niche Brands team.
Nathalie is a freelance marketer with a lot of good ideas and an unwavering passion for all things creative... bringing a certain “Je ne sais quoi” to team Hiho.

Y
ou might have seen the brand Teddy Edward. Perhaps you’ve seen pictures of the gorgeous garments on Instagram? Or maybe at events? Here, we catch up with the founder Stephen Reeds to find out more about the brand.
Why did you start the business? I wanted to build my own brand, with the sort of ethos and products I could be truly proud of. I saw a few brands which strayed away from their original offering, and saw a gap in the market which needed filling.
“ You’re far less likely to show up at the pub wearing the same shirt as someone else when you’re wearing Teddy Edward! ” Tell us a bit about you and your background. I’ve worked in the fashion industry for over 25 years. After a long career building brands for other people, I felt it was about time I started working for myself!

What is your brand’s USP? When we say we are totally British, we mean it Everything is manufactured in the Great Britain, fabric and construction. Additionally, we only offer limited luxury collections due to our small production runs, you’re far less likely to show up at the pub wearing the same shirt as someone else when you’re wearing Teddy Edward! Flagship product – which product started it all? That’s a tricky question, we began with a flagship collection based around the best of “Great British design”, so we never really started with one product. However some of the big hits from our first collection include our Oakley Ladies gilet, and our Brocklesby alpaca wool socks, with the hand-linked toe seam.

Best show/event? It’s a toss-up between the Game Fair and the Burghley Horse Trials, and that’s as both an exhibitor and a visitor. The buzz and atmosphere around the event is second to none! Funniest business experience? We had one very... vertically gifted man attempt to try on some garments in the changing room at one of our events. Now normally you use the changing room to avoid everyone from being able to watch you change, but this guy was so tall he was sticking head and shoulders out of the top!
Best experience so far? (because of your business) I loved seeing the look on one young Lady’s face when she was trying on our new Cissie Moleskin Jeans at an event and looking at herself in the mirror. It was the biggest smile I’d ever seen, which makes all the stress of designing, making and selling the garments worth it! What are your business highs? I still get a happy buzz whenever someone tries on a product, loves it, and buys it. It’s so satisfying having a design in your head turned into a real, quality garment on your shop floor, and a great feeling knowing that somewhere out there, people are wearing it and love it!

yde & Hare is a new luxury lifestyle brand, run by Piers Dickinson. The brand creates British made cowhide accessories. All are high quality, ethically sourced and one of a kind, as Piers explains…
What made you want to start Hyde & Hare? I graduated in 2015 having studied Real Estate for 3 years and was always certain that this was the path I was going to take. Having been lucky enough to be offered a Graduate Surveyor role in the City it was the moment I read my contract and in bold were the working hours 8am – 10:00pm, this was the point where I realised I wasn’t cut out for this life which lacked any form of creativity! I then spent the next couple of months helping manage luxury safari lodges in Kenya where I discovered the beauty of cowhide and saw the potential of Hyde & Hare. The option to pursue a career using such a beautiful, natural material while supporting local British artisans was too good to turn down.

What makes your products special and what can someone expect? Sadly most people who produce cowhide goods use cowhide print, here patterns are printed onto a white hide using a computer and you can replicate it over and over again. You really lose the uniqueness, texture and feel of the natural material that cowhide is. We use the finest quality hand-selected cowhides, where each one is different in terms of their colour and pattern so we know each of our cowhide bags will be one of a kind and totally unique from any other like them. The fact that we hand select every single cowhide ensures we often have the softest and most textured hides, so soft people have been know to stroke our products more than their pets.
“ I was lucky enough to have breakfast and discuss ideas with Leonardo DiCaprio.” What is your funniest business experience? Meticulously planning our photo shoot for 2 months down to a fine tee with four different outfits, the location, models, lighting, jewellery and then forgetting the actual products to be shot on the day! Luckily it wasn’t far from home so a mad rush to get everything over to the location while our model was having hair and make up. Being only 6 weeks since our launch I’m sure there is plenty more to follow..

What is your best show that you’ve been to over the years? Having launched in June we will be waiting till early 2018 to exhibit up and down the country. The best event and highlight of the year has to be Badminton for us (partly because it’s on our doorstep!) and the fact that it’s probably one of the most well organised events as it’s 6 days long. You even see the Duke of Beaufort fence judging and handing out prizes on occasions.
Best experience so far? While helping manage safari lodges in Kenya I was able to combine game drives with planning the beginnings of Hyde & Hare before returning to England. I had the opportunity to meet some really interesting people and was lucky enough to have breakfast and discuss ideas with Leonardo Da Caprio. Fair to say I’m still waiting for his order.. Flagship product – which product started it all? The Foxley Handbag was the first product we designed and it’s been very popular since our launch alongside our Arundel Clutches. The Tricolour in both which consists of Brown, Black and White has definitely been one of the most popular colours in the U.K while Black and White has been a our most popular in the U.S. Texas seems to have an obsession with Black and White bags with all of our Arlingham Overnight Bags visiting new shores. If you had to sum up your business in

y name is Rachel Bragg and I’m an equine photographer, specialising in lifestyle portrait sessions for horse lovers and their equine best friends.
I’m a country girl at heart. I grew up in rural Bedfordshire (that funny little county just a bit north of London) and spent most of my formative years playing with my brother and friends on the 2 farms next to where I lived. School holidays were about trying to tame the untamable black Shetland pony that lived on one of them. We never did but received ample bruises and bites for our efforts! We were taught to shoot air rifles and had fun with the farm terriers who were incredible ratters. Growing up in this environment was utterly fabulous! 24
Despite the Shetland pony exploits I don’t think I officially started to ride until I was about 10. It was my Granddad who was responsible for my love of horses really. His business supplied hay and straw to many of the leading racehorse trainers in Newmarket and I frequently went with him, often left to explore the yards. The stable lads were always lovely and I spent many happy hours around the legs of million pound horses. I doubt that would happen now! As a result horses became a complete focus for me and so the lessons started. My very own amazing pony appeared when I was a teenager. I did the usual Pony Club things, I rode to drag hounds and I competed at junior affiliated show jumping. I once cleared a 5ft 2” puissance wall on my 13.2 pony.

In later life equestrian based photography became my real passion. I no longer have horses of my own so it’s a great way to stay in touch with the equine and country world. It was whilst working at a Horse Trials a few years ago as a freelance photographer that I first discovered Hiho Silver. I stared and stared at each piece and promised myself one day I’d be wearing something of theirs. The very first piece I had was the Willberry Wonder Pony charm. He now spends most of his time in my office attached to a very precious small wooden rocking horse. I subsequently purchased both the Double Leather Wrap bracelet and the Spinning Snaffle ring as treats for career achievements attained. I adore both and wear them on a daily basis, choosing this ring constantly over personal rings I’ve inherited over the years. Both of these items totally speak to me as they really do represent the rural way of life for me. I recently received

THE FINALE September sees the finale of the Event Rider Masters (ERM) 2017 season… and what a season it’s been with the first all female podium, world number 1 Michael Jung entering and winning his first ERM leg and Gemma Tattershall winning two legs so far. Who will take the title of overall champion this year (and bag themselves £30,000 as leading rider)? Well, it’s going to be a nail biter – that’s for sure! The final leg takes place at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials on 15th and 16th September.

Blenheim Palace sits proudly over the 2000+ acres of Capability Brown landscaped parkland and provides a stunning backdrop for some world class eventing action. In addition to the Event Rider Masters’ final leg, Blenheim also sees CCI*** and CIC*** 8 and 9 year old classes, the Eventers’ High Jump, Arena Eventing, over 200 tradestands (including Hiho!) and lots more.
As with all the phases, and all the legs, you can watch online for free at www.eventridermasters.tv, and you can see re-runs of all the other legs too. It’s been a superb series this year with seven legs making up the competition, including for the first time two continental European legs at Wiesbaden in Germany and Jardy in France. Last year’s series winner was Oliver Townend but having had a challenging series this year it’s looking like a new rider will take this year’s crown. Hiho Silver has been delighted to support #ERMsupergroom this season as well as last. Make sure you get involved in the final leg, to help reward the groom you feel has gone above and beyond. W
ith Burghley Horse Trials – one of Eventing’s famous Rolex grand slam tracks and arguably the most renowned 4* event in the world, just around the corner, all eyes are firmly on the riders and their noble steeds. The annual three day event which is always held over the first weekend of September is set in the grounds of Burghley House in the beautiful market town of Stamford, Lincolnshire. It’s a must-attend event for any aspiring or amateur event riders or equestrian lovers in general, offering the chance to watch equestrian heroes and their famous riders battle it out over the toughest of 4* courses and with over 80 international entries already confirmed including past winners, Olympic and World Equestrian Games medallists alongside many Team GB riders and first time combinations - this year is no different. Whilst the dressage, show jumping and cross-country elements of the event are of course the main attraction, there’s so much to see and do that there really is something for everyone. As a (very!) amateur eventer, cross country day is without a doubt my favourite and something that I have attended most years since I had my first pony aged 3! But as a self-confessed shopping addict and style lover, the huge shopping village also has my attention. For the riders, the majority of the event is obviously spent in riding boots and breeches but the trot up –

Feet First It’s really important to remember that horses are going to be involved in a trot up, so certain footwear is offlimits if you want to keep your toes! As always, I try to advocate practical style that looks fabulous but is fit for purpose, so my advice would be to wear fully covered shoes or even better, boots to keep your feet safe. I have been the unlucky recipient of many horses standing on my feet and let me tell you, it’s not pleasant, so protection is important! Another thing to remember – a trot up is just that, so it involves some running usually over gravel. So make sure the shoes you pick are 1. comfortable and 2. actually fit you. I would also advise that you have worn your shoes a few times beforehand so there’s no chance of unwanted blisters that you will have to run on if you want to keep hold of your horse! That doesn’t mean your shoes can’t be on trend though… here are my favourites;
Fairfax & Favor Amira Boots As we all know, I (as well as everyone else) am a huge fan of Fairfax & Favor and to be honest, I could have picked any of their boots to fit the brief. Indeed many riders (including the best dressed) have been pictured in Fairfax & Favor so it’s obvious that they are a firm favourite. I particularly love the new Amira over the knee boots, which have a small heel to add a bit of glamour, but are still practical as demonstrated by the Team GB Junior and Young Riders Event team at FEI European Eventing Championships earlier this month.

Really Wild Heeled Ankle Boots Another head turner – but for the right reasons! Again these boots are fully covered (toe protection sorted) and have a perfectly sized heel for running without risking a sprained ankle whilst still looking super stylish. These boots would be perfect with trousers or a skirt/dress and have to be at the top of everyone’s wish list!
Ariat Henleys Completely flat, so ideal if you do have a frisky horse and made by Ariat – internationally renowned for producing the most innovative and technical riding boots, so you know they’re going to be comfortable. These desert- type boots would look perfect with any outfit.
A Tailored Jacket The weather is completely unpredictable during Burghley week, it’s entirely possible to experience brilliant sunshine or pouring rain so a jacket is a must. I’ve specified a tailored jacket here for a few reasons; horses (particularly those fit enough to compete at this level) are unpredictable and full of energy – don’t give them a reason to spook or shy by having a jacket undone and flapping around. A tailored jacket or coat also adds a flattering shape to any rider, so it’s also important from a style perspective! I’ve listed a few of my favourite jackets that have ‘best dressed’ written all over them:

Dubarry Pearlwort Tweed Blazer Perfectly fitting of the elegant backdrop of Burghley house, this blazer is classically gorgeous and with a matching waistcoat available, paired with a silk shirt, you’re sure to go straight to the top of the style stakes. Without compromising your horse’s safety and your sanity!
Really Wild Gatsby Coat A long tailored coat in a neutral colour but don’t worry, this coat is sure to stand out from the crowd and would look stunning with a pair of burgundy skinny jeans and similar colour silk scarf (tied and tucked away appropriately of course)
Holland Cooper Knightsbridge Blazer Redesigning country tweed and giving it a modern makeover, Holland Cooper has been a firm favourite of many riders in recent trot ups. I love the new Knightsbridge blazer, particularly in the red barathea option which is reminiscent of a Huntsman’s Jacket and is sure to turn heads.
The Brockhurst jacket by Charleston Couture... .. makers of bespoke and limited edition pieces, so you know you’ll be the only one rocking your item at the trot up. Accessorise for the win! Outfit options are relatively restricted when it comes to trot up style because they have to be chosen with the main focus in mind – getting your horse through the trot up without impairing their ability to trot up sound. Clothing and shoes must be appropriate for being around horses and suitable to run in, after all you wouldn’t choose a short fitted skirt or high heels to run alongside your horse on any other day, so why would you for the trot up! So my biggest piece of style advice is to accessorise – that way you can inject your own personality into any outfit without compromising your safety. There are so many different options to choose with accessories, meaning the plainest of outfits can be instantly transformed in so many different ways which is usually how I add some personality to my own outfits. My favourite accessories to ensure you ace the trot-up are listed here.
Long chain Cherry Roller and Spinning Snaffle Rings from Hiho Silver The Cherry Roller collection is Hiho’s signature range and features too many gorgeous pieces to list (the new cherry roller bangle with interchangeable blingy beads would also be perfect here too), but I love the new long chain cherry roller. The Badminton Belt by Mackenzie & George You may have seen Mackenzie & George featured as the ‘Behind the Brand’ in a recent Country Shows Journal and for very good reason, makers of the finest country and equestrian accessories that are both timeless and elegant I really could have chosen anything from the Mackenzie & George range as the perfect trot-up accessory. However, the Badminton belt has to be the perfect trot-up accessory, with its polished brass snaffle adorning a supple leather belt that is narrow enough to be worn as a waist belt either around your coat or shirt dress, or simply around a pair of good quality jeans – the belt can even be personalised with your initials!
The key to trot up style is practicality, there have been many riders in the spotlight for the wrong reasons on trot up day over the years because their first thought has been fashion. Remember, you will be handling horses so you must dress appropriately to remain as safe as possible. Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in, you need to focus on your horse passing the inspection otherwise it’s a very long journey home! So all your energy needs to be there, rather than you feeling insecure or uncomfortable. Dress for the weather, which is unpredictable at best during Burghley week! But remember, practical doesn’t have to mean boring or ugly – if you follow my three top style picks, you’ll be sure to be trotting up for best dressed every time! X

Gillian Higgins Horses Inside Out
Gillian Higgins is the lady behind Horses Inside Out, a fascinating company that uses paints and show the muscles, bones and tendons, in addition to other anatomical systems, on the outside of a live, moving horse. Showing the position of these ‘parts’ on a horse in action makes it easier to understand how various aspects work together. Gillian works across the UK and beyond, and actually met our very own Queen Bee, Emma Warren, at World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Open Day. A bit about your background – how did you get into this career? My main passions in life are horses, anatomy, being creative, and teaching. As a Sports and Remedial Therapist, I realised that many of my clients were asking the same questions about their horses, particularly in relation to their backs. I decided to hold a workshop outlining the areas most prone to problems and showing them how, by understanding their anatomy, they could improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. I was then asked to give a presentation to the Event Horse Owners Association and the British Horse Society. One demonstration led to another and Horses Inside Out grew from there. Who’s your favourite horse and why? Freddie Fox, my own horse, is very special to me. We competed at intermediate and CIC ** eventing. He is such a character, cheeky, patient and kind. He was the first and the main model for Horses Inside Out which really changed my life. I think he is the most painted horse in the world!! He is on the front cover of all my books and DVDs. What’s your favourite event and why? I have very fond memories from Gatcombe horse trials. I love the parkland and the open galloping course. Proudest moment? Winning the Knowledge West Enterprise Awards for my business Horses Inside Out. What’s a typical day like? Every day is different!! I love the variety of my life. On a day when I have a live painted horse evening lecture demonstration, we usually travel to the venue ready to meet the team and then do rehearsals at 10am. After lunch we start painting the horses. With a team of 4-6 people it takes about 5 hours to paint 2 sides of 2 horses. At 6pm we have the final checks in the arena and the people start to arrive. The evening lecture demonstration starts at 7pm. This is dynamic and energetic evening full of information, exercises and tips for improving health and performance. People often leave saying - ‘Ahhh! That explains why my trainer says to do x’ and ‘I wish I had seen this years ago!!’. 34

World Horse Welfare

and Rover Burghley Horse Trials announced that the 2017 event would see the first ever ‘charity of the year’, and the charity selected was World Horse Welfare. With a number of fundraising initiatives set up during the event to support the amazing work the charity does, it’s set to be a really superb event for all concerned. This year sees World Horse Welfare celebrate its 90th anniversary, so it seems fitting that the charity has been selected to be Land Rover Burghley Horse Trial’s first official Charity of the Year. The charity was founded in 1927 by Ada Cole, with a campaign to end the long distance transport of British horses destined for slaughter in Europe. It was known as the ILPH, or International League for the Protection of Horses, before being renamed World Horse Welfare. In the UK, World Horse Welfare’s dedicated network of Field Officers investigate and resolve welfare problems, and the charity runs four Rescue and Rehoming Centres where horses in need can receive specialist care, undergo rehabilitation and find loving new homes through its rehoming scheme – the largest of its kind in the UK. World Horse Welfare’s international programmes alleviate the suffering of thousands of working horses by providing essential knowledge for horse owning communities in the developing world. The charity also works tirelessly to change legislation and attitudes to horse welfare through campaigns and education, including its founding campaign to end the suffering endured by the tens of thousands of horses transported long-distance across Europe to slaughter each year.

Another horse trials, another trot up, another display of the best in equestrian and country fashion! Back in May, I had the great pleasure of reporting on the Badminton Trot Up, scrutinising the outfits choices of the world’s top event riders, as they wrangled over exuberant horses, trying to get them to trot (and not perform airs above the ground) in front of the world’s media, the buzzing crowd and, most importantly, the vet.

My name is Sophie Callahan. I am an equine photographer, a country lifestyle blogger and vlogger, and a very proud ambassador for Hiho Silver. Hiho were sponsoring the Best Dressed Award for the Badminton Trot Up, and so I was invited to blog and commentate, as a representative of the brand. I experienced my first forray into radio, discussing the best and the worse of the riders’ attire, live on air, which was a lot of fun. And I wrote an article for the Badminton blog, detailing some of my favourites, as well as the overall winners, chosen by Hiho. As expected, we saw plenty of capes, a lot of fedoras and the repetition of some very ‘of the moment’ brands. Fairfax & Favor featured heavily, as did brands such as Sporting Hares and Holland Cooper. All of which were instantly recognisable. Eventually, taking the top spot were Australia’s Paul Tapner, for the men, wearing an original waistcoat, tweed and horse-print shirt combo, topped with a daring wooden bow tie. His outfit was by his sponsor, Claudio Lugli.
And for the ladies, Great Britain’s Danielle Dunn was the chosen winner. Danielle was dressed in a bespoke Charleston Couture jacket and hat, paired with boots by Equiclass and watch by Abbott Lyon. And I’d imagine we will be seeing a lot of the same themes again at Burghley. Capes, long boots, hats, tweeds… All the staples of the equestrian and country fashion fanatic’s wardrobe. And this time, for Burghley, we’re turning the spotlight onto you guys. I’m sure the trot up fashion will be suitably scrutinised by many critics. However, we wanted to give you the chance to show off your ‘best dressed’ efforts, in an attempt to win the fabulous prize.
