2020: THE YEAR OF DANGER

T

José López Zamorano La Red Hispana

cover the most difficult counties, especially in states with an important Hispanic population, like California.

he nascent 2020 is emerging as a year of dangers and challenges, but also unique growth opportunities for the Hispanic community in the United States.

The exact count of ALL depends on the destiny of hundreds of billions of dollars in public resources for health, education and much more, but also the reconfiguration of electoral districts in 2021.

At least 2 events have the potential to redefine the weight of Latino communities in the country's social and political geography: the 2020 Census and the November presidential elections.

And in November the general elections will take place. For the Hispanic community it is another major challenge. About 15 to 18 million Latinas and Latinos eligible to vote are not yet registered, according to the new Latinx organization. Hence, a large amount of economic and organizational resources are necessary to ensure that the largest number of Latino adults who are citizens make a difference in November.

These are two events where the Hispanic community can have a transcendent influence or, at the same time, can be one of the most serious missed opportunities of the new political cycle in the United States. The list of challenges could also include the judicial resolution on the future of DACA, the Deferred Action Program that benefits 690,000 young people, but the outcome of the case lies mostly with the Supreme Court of Justice, which must decide whether to accept the argument on the constitutionality of DACA or if it grants the Trump administration the desire to eliminate the program.

Photo Credit: Pixabay Undoubtedly, the first capital question of 2020 will be the Latin participation in the Census of April 1. Although the Supreme Court decided to leave out the question about citizenship, it remains among the members of the immigrant community that their data can be used against them in immigration proceedings.

Even when the law prohibits Census officials from sharing information with immigration authorities. A study by the Urban Institute also concluded that more than 1.7 million Latinos may not be counted because the Census did not dedicate enough budget for a trial in Spanish or the resources to

There lies the great dilemma of 2020. A year of great opportunities to leave behind the debate of the Latino community as the sleeping giant and start a conversation about the unlimited potential of the main ethnic minority in the United States. And the outcome depends entirely on us. For more information www.laredhispana.com.

DIPLOMACY & NEGOTIATION FIRST WAR MUST BE LAST RESORT leader who was responsible for some 700 American KIA's.

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

A

mericans must become very vocal about letting our national leaders get this nation into another war. The President and all U.S. Congressional members must keep in mind that wars are very wasteful of the very same resources which civilian commerce makes use of when conducting local business. In my mind's memory are visions of thousands of WWII warplanes parked in an Arizona field where they were being scrapped to recover the aluminum metal for other commercial uses. Human lives are lost during wars along with much material support. The number of military combatants is well documented. The number of civilians who lost their lives as collateral KIA's is never well established. Last Thursday (01.02.2020), President Trump authorized the assassination of Iranian Major General Qassim Soleimani, who had been instrumental in resisting American military forces. Allegedly, this one Iranian leader had been a very effective combat resistance

His assassination incited Iranian people to honor him as a martyr and a hero in Iran. This particular Major General had openly advocated asking American military units to go back home to America. With his rhetoric President Donald Trump has brought us to the brink of war with Iran. Such a war would destabilize the Middle East for decades to come. It would unleash massscale human suffering on Iran’s 80+ million civilian population. And Trump did this to distract us from his impeachment in the House, and a pending trial in the Senate. We must take to the streets and make our LOUD opposition very public. The #NoWarWithIran movement has shown this opposition, with planned protests around the country. On their website, nowarwithiran. org, they stated: “Let's show all others that we have learned our lessons from Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and global endless war. We will not be driven by lies into another war. We will not allow our Iranian American and Muslim neighbors to become targeted by law enforcement. We will not be divided.” Let's begin to use diplomacy

and negotiations first. Let's empower those communities which lack expertise and resources by assisting these same communities to develop their own essential capabilities. Wars are very wasteful of material resources and intangible lives. Diplomacy and negotiations may be slower; however, no resources are destroyed nor lives lost. Finally, let's ensure that those who did the work to use diplomacy and negotiations are thanked for their productive efforts. Can you imagine a future without wars because all of us have learned to first use diplomacy and negotiations? Is it possible that we may achieve world peace through diplomacy and negotiations? I suggest we try using diplomacy and negotiations first to ensure that wars diminish. It's worth trying. An observation about the application of sanctions which impact people. It would be much more effective to freeze the personal assets of national leadership who continue to have access to resources when sanctions are imposed. Would it not be much more effective to do things which will directly reach the leaders who make decisions being

opposed? Another aspect of direct negotiations is that very essential national needs may be identified and defined. This may lead to programs which mitigate these issues thereby diminishing the use of warfare to resolve those shortages of access to resources needed. The American use of foreign policy to encourage regime changes needs to become very transparent in order to bring into common knowledge who benefits and who is supportive. Too often corporate special interests which are profit oriented do not serve the long-term service needs of the indigent populations being affected. This approach invariably leads to internal civil strife. One only must become analytically informed about the colonial exploitive practices of the recent past. That approach must be modified to allow for local development of selfgovernance and development. A good beginning includes the development of educational facilities which includes both men and women. Future developments which improve local domestic issues are usually better identified by women than by men leaders. It is always productive to include the perspective of women who

are quite often more in tune with the humane issues extant today. The most productive processes include direct impute from those involved. Invariably communication systems which allow input from the local populations must be sought, encouraged, and developed. White Leaders are simply often not in touch with the issues being coped with by persons of color. Indirect evidence is directly visible when one examines the gender make-up of governing boards and elected officials. The resolution of many issues would be facilitated by the inclusion in governing boards of those who are being impacted and exploited. That will happen when communications are established which include direct diplomacy and negotiations. This includes stopping wars through direct action. Then it may be possible to effectively address other issues facing humanity such as global warming. As the world's population increases, people need to become informed enough to make necessary adjustments to their lives and speak out on issues facing them when the opportunity exists. All of this requires diplomacy and negotiations.

E

rom encouraging dialogue on mental health to initiating grassroots fundraising efforts for pediatric cancer, students across the country are choosing issues they’re passionate about and generating real change. Parents, educators and community members may ask a pertinent question: how can we develop this initiative in every child? While some might view leadership as an innate quality, new research commissioned by Lead4Change suggests that students can emerge as leaders with the right school curriculum. The independent research study measured change in key leadership skills in middle and high schoolers who completed the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program, a curriculum that teaches students to lead, create and implement team projects to meet a need in their community. Before and after participating in the program, students completed a survey that measured several different behavioral factors. The study found that students experienced significant changes in their growth, including leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent). Fifty-six percent of participants gained greater commitment to vision -- they were more capable of describing a compelling image of what our future could look like and were able to identify milestones to reach that vision. One example of the program’s success was at Wantagh Middle School on Long Island, N.Y. Following a school survey that measured students’ mental health, a young student group melted old crayons to create aromatherapy candles to reduce stress. Proceeds were donated to the Born This Way Foundation, an organization committed to supporting young people’s wellness. Students also took their story to the school board, requesting action. They led efforts in their school to create designated quiet restorative rooms. “We learned to embrace failure and use it as a tool to get better,” says Patti Andreolas, a teacher who oversaw the project. “It became more about the journey and watching the students evolve.” The survey also examined specific qualities integral for leaders, finding a statistically significant increase in students’ ability to engage, motivate and guide others to achieve goals that result in their desired changes. For example, after the Lead4Change program, students at Menchville High School in Newport News, Va. were united by a drive to improve

their community, developing a comprehensive plan that included collecting food, volunteering for a local food bank, participating in anti-bullying campaigns and creating a “Teacher Positivity” campaign. “As a group, we learned to incorporate everyone’s ideas and delegate work to achieve our main goals,” says Ashley Johnson, a 10th grader involved in the project. “Personally, the project helped me with prioritizing, time management and learning to balance responsibilities.” For more study results and program information, visit lead4change.org/research. While making an impact can seem difficult due to the complexity of issues affecting communities, leadership curriculum gives students the skills to address these matters head-on. The study found that younger students and those with lower scores at the start of the program benefitted the most from participating, demonstrating that anyone can become a leader when the proper skills are nurtured.

Household chores are time consuming and, let's face it, not many people look forward to cleaning and laundry. Invest in ways to lighten your load, with new technology that can help you with energy-saving capabilities which in turn save you both time and money.

Stick to a sleep schedule

Consigue un buen calendario

The first step in reaching your goals is making sure you're in good health. One of the most important, and difficult, aspects of good health is sleep. You'll feel more refreshed and ready to take on the day if you establish a solid sleep schedule and stick to it. To set your schedule, pick the time you want to wake up every day and count back seven to eight hours - that's your new bedtime.

Spend less time on chores

Get a good calendar Maximize your time by having a plan for each week. Whether you use a notebook checklist, the calendar on your smartphone or invest in a year-long planner, you'll always have your plan on-hand and never miss a deadline or to-do list item. Become a meal prepper Set aside time each week to plan your meals

Unos 40 panaderos usaron 2,6 toneladas de harina, más de 13,500 huevos, así como 50 kilos de levadura, 50 kilos de sal, 625 litros de leche, 500 kilos de acitrón y 187 kilos de mantequilla, 187 kilos de manteca vegetal “para el adorno” y 100 kilos de azúcar. erida, Mexico - A city in eastern Mexico has set a new Guinness record after baking the world's longest "Rosca de Reyes" ("Three Kings' ring") – a traditional Christmas pastry of Spanish origin typically eaten to celebrate the Catholic holiday of Epiphany – with an astonishing length of 3,009.65 meters (9,874.18 feet or 1.87 miles).

Over 30,000 people, including many pilgrims and tourists, flocked on Monday to the city of Tizimin in Yucatan state – located about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) to the east of Mexico City – to witness and taste the brobdingnagian egg-and-butterbased patisserie, which beat the previous record-holder (the northern city of Saltillo in 2019) by almost an entire kilometer.

About 40 bakers used 2.6 tons of flour, over 13,500 eggs, 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of yeast, 50 kg of salt, 625 liters (165 gallons) of milk, 187 kg of butter, 187 kg of vegetable shortening, 100 kg of sugar and 500 kg of acitron (a sweet confection traditionally made with the pulp of a several endangered cactus species). Measuring the pythonic pastry was no easy task: it took the Guinness team – which was accompanied by medical experts – six hours to ascertain its exact size using a flexible tape measure. The Rosca de Reyes, which is derived from the Spanish pastry known as "roscón" that was transplanted to the Americas during the 16th-century conquest, is usually filled with small figurines. In Mexico, whoever gets the statuettes is compelled to pay for tamales (filled dough dishes wrapped in corn or banana leaves) on Feb. 2, the feast

of the Virgin of La Candelaria (known as Candlemas in the Anglo-Saxon world). The record-shattering rosca in Tizimin was filled with 19,000 plastic figurines depicting Baby Jesus, as well as 20 made out of clay. Tizimin has the largest sanctuary in Latin America dedicated to the Three Kings, second only to the cathedral of Cologne, Germany. "We managed to create not only the world's biggest Rosca de Reyes, but also the most special of them all due to the fervor of residents and pilgrims when they reach the sanctuary of the Three Kings," said Sergio Fiscal, one of the head bakers behind the feat. The Three Kings, Biblical Magi or Three Wise Men are briefly mentioned in the New Testament's Gospel of Matthew, though their supposedly monarchic status is not. The Bible describes them as foreign visitors who arrived in adoration after Jesus of Nazareth's birth bearing the symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Later interpretations of the legend introduced their kingly qualities to make Christ's birth coincide with Old Testament prophecies. Throughout the Middle Ages, they became an important part of Christmas celebrations and nativity depictions in Western Christianity, especially in southern Europe. In Spain and Mexico – as well as most parts of Latin America – Christmas gifts were usually received on Jan. 6th, though the modern Santa Claus lore has become more and more popular with the spread of globalization and now many Spanish-speaking children unwrap their season's presents on the morning of Dec. 25, too.

LEGALIZED MARIJUANA: A MISTAKE FOR OHIO?

MARIHUANA LEGALIZADA: ¿UN ERROR PARA OHIO?

OLUMBUS, Ohio -Recreational marijuana use is now legal in both Michigan and Illinois, but don't expect that to happen in Ohio on Gov. Mike DeWine's watch. In an interview this week, DeWine said legalizing marijuana for adults would be a mistake. The governor told the Ohio Public Radio Statehouse News Bureau that today's marijuana is more potent than in the past, and could pose a health risk for young people. However, Matthew Schweich, deputy director of the Marijuana Policy Project, disagreed. "For years, we heard about the 'gateway theory' -- that consuming marijuana means you, all of a sudden, want to consume harder drugs," he said. "That's been thoroughly debunked by experts. The real gateway is prohibition. Prohibition forces people into an illicit market where there's a far, far higher chance of them being exposed to harder drugs." Schweich said regulating marijuana allows states to establish potency limits and ensure products are packaged consistently and sold appropriately. On Jan. 1, Illinois became the 11th state to legalize recreational use of marijuana for people age 21 and older. Ohio is among the nearly

two dozen states that have approved the use of medical marijuana. That program launched in January 2019 with just a few dispensaries, and grew to 46 by year's end, with more than $56 million worth of products sold. Schweich said it isn't a far reach to say recreational sales could be an economic driver. "Has legalization greatly benefited state economies? We can't say that for certain, because economies are complex," he said. "But by all accounts, these legalization laws are creating businesses, creating jobs, generating tax revenues, and I think that's part of the reason voters like these policies." In states that have legalized marijuana, Schweich said, so far there have been no bills or ballot initiatives to repeal it. "The proof is in the pudding," he said. "Voters in these states approved these policies, support them, continue to support them. If our opponents were right about this issue, I think we'd see more activity on the repeal front -- but instead, we see absolutely none." While one reform doesn't always lead to another, Schweich said legalizing medical marijuana has helped normalize the issue of marijuana policy reform, In a November 2018 poll from the Pew Research Center, 32% of U.S. adults said they oppose marijuana legalization, compared with 52% in 2010.

“ BACKSTAG E ” AT CE S 2020

e got to Las Vegas earlier in the week and took a self-driving Lyft from the Wynn to the Convention Center – super fun! CES 2020 officially started on Tuesday and there were so many amazing booths and exhibits being set up prior to this that we decided to go “backstage” to see what we could see. Big Buzz Words There’s a theme this year: The coolest technology is smarter, is faster, listens, and speaks.

All we know for sure is that Neon doesn’t have anything to do with Bixby, Samsung’s existing AI assistant, and that we’ll know a lot more very soon. More VTOLs, AVs, and Auto stuff AVs are here (we just took one) but I’m excited to see what’s next. Honda is showing off some great advancements in its Smart Intersection, Safe Swarm, and DriveMode technologies. BlackBerry is highlighting all the exciting stuff its QNX software can enable. At CES 2019, Bell stole the show with the Nex-

us VTOL, which you may remember as the human-carrying air taxi drone that looks like it was born out of the Halo video game series. Hyundai is going to show off its concept for a flying taxi. Perhaps the CES will also become the “Las Vegas Air Show.” We’ll see. Considering the U.S. economy is driven by the auto industry (pardon the pun), the companies on display in North Hall are going to offer one of the clearest glimpses into our tech future. Chinese Tech Huawei is the world’s #1 telecom supplier

5G, AI, Voice, AV, eVTOL, AR, XR – get out your lexicon. Just from the signage, it is alphabet soup this year.

Services While CES has traditionally been about hardware, this year I’m seeing more and more services on offer. Hardware margins are thin. Subscription service margins are awesome. It is a trend. From subscription food to home security to meditation, if it can be packaged as a service, it’s here at CES. Samsung Neon “Have you ever met an ‘Artificial?'” There’s no word on what, exactly, Samsung Neon is (yet), but Samsung has been teasing its “artificial human” all week – and I can’t wait to meet it! The best guess right now is that Samsung’s Neon is a digital avatar/computer-generated human that you can interact with. The possibilities are nearly endless: it can be used for work (think concierge or receptionist), for play (think Westworld), for healthcare (as a home companion), or for anything else you could imagine.

As I’ve written before, the tech in China (and its path to the future as a result of China’s data policies) will make it just about impossible for America to catch up, let alone compete. Considering the political climate, it will be interested to see how the various companies present themselves here at the show. Privacy and Security

You can’t walk five steps without seeing a sign for 5G. And, of course, every exhibit has a sign that says something about AI and Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Demonstrating the power and potential of 5G is going to be interesting. “Here, check out our superfast wireless network – it works just like your current indoor superfast wireless network, except I can charge you to use it.”

and #2 phone manufacturer, but their smartphones are virtually nonexistent in the U.S. They’re here at CES along with many other top Chinese brands, including Hisense, Xperi, Changhong, and TCL. Over the past 10 years, China has transformed from a total copycat tech community to a community of exceptional innovation. I will leave the politics of this transition for another article.

The velocity of data is increasing and will always increase. Where does that data come from, where is it stored, who gets to use it, and for how long? These are questions that lots of big tech companies are trying to help you answer. The subject is front and center – which is great, because data privacy is one of most important topics of our time. Smart TVs have been around for years. And every year, TV manufacturers do their best to try to make us care about higher picture quality. Bigger TVs, better picture, better interface… yawn! This year, there’s something to talk about. Cord cutting is real, and, if you cut the cord, you have access to enough bandwidth to see amazing picture quality and hear the best audio. This is not possible with a cable TV set top box. The intersection of the internet (network), display technology (TVs), and content (streaming video) makes 2020 the first year that there is a valid reason to purchase a new, big, awesome, flat screen. The Show CES is far and away my favorite show. This year don’t think about CES in terms of gadgets or single products. Think of it as a world’s fair filled with technology that will work together to change our lives.
