QUÉ HACER ANTE EL NUEVO PLAN DE DEPORTACIONES DE TRUMP WHAT TO DO ABOUT TRUMP'S NEW DEPORTATION PLAN

Thereis no doubt: Donald Trump will fulfill his promise of mass deportations. One of his first appointments was Tom Homan, as border “czar.”

Homan is the architect of the “zero tolerance” policy and has already announced that they will start with migrants who are a threat to public or national security, in addition to the resumption of the feared raids in work centers.

“His appointment suggests that the new policies could be marked by a lack of humane treatment, prioritizing coercion and fear instead

of the justice and compassion that vulnerable people in desperate situations deserve,” immigration attorney Rafael Borrás tells us.

It is obvious that there is concern among our community regarding possible deportation plans. Experts recommend not panicking but being prepared with the following steps:

1. Know your rights: Every person in the United States has fundamental rights, regardless of their immigration status. It is crucial to know that if you are detained by authorities, you have the right to remain silent, to ask to speak to a lawyer, and not to sign any documents without a lawyer present.

2. Raids. In case of raids or unexpected visits, remember that authorities must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. If someone shows up at your door, they are not required to open it without seeing a legal warrant.

3. A family plan. Discuss a plan with your family for what to do in case of an emergency. Decide in advance who will be responsible for childcare and family finances if a family member is detained or deported.

4. Documents. Prepare important documents such as birth certificates, passports, marriage certificates, and other documentation that you might need in case of separation. Make sure you have copies of all legal documents.

5. Consider power of attorney. A lawyer can help you set up this type of document so that a trusted family member or friend has the legal authority to make decisions about your home, finances, and children in your absence.

6. Seek support in the community. Stay connected with local civil rights and immigration organizations. You can also find support in churches, community centers, and other networks that provide guidance and emotional support.

7. Educate and reassure your children. Talk as a family about what can happen and explain to them that no matter what happens, you will be prepared to protect them.

8. Stay proactive. Stay informed to understand how laws and policies can affect you and your family. This will also allow you to act quickly if new legal opportunities arise.

In these uncertain times, these steps can give you a greater sense of security and protection for you and your family. Take advantage of available resources and stay calm – unity and community support are stronger than ever and can make a difference in these difficult times.

AsPresident-elect Donald Trump announces immigration hard-liners as his deputy chief of staff and border czar the week after the election, groups supporting undocumented college students in California are vowing to stand up for people's rights.

Golden State colleges serve 83,000 undocumented students, according to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal.

Jessie Ryan, executive director of the Campaign for College Opportunity, part of the California Undocumented Higher Education Coalition, expressed the mounting concerns.

"We got a glimpse into some of what might be done in Project 2025 statements," Ryan explained. "Looking at things like mass deportation, including ending pathways to citizenship."

Trump administration might pull DACA work authorization from the so-called Dreamers, people brought to the U.S. as children. People can find a map of resources broken down by campus on the website of the California Undocumented Coalition for Higher Education.

Ryan hopes California's sanctuary state law will deter any immigration raids on college campuses but there is no guarantee.

"The mood is very somber,

lies," Ryan observed. "Many of our students and families are feeling fearful and uncertain of what their futures will be and whether or not college remains accessible to them, or if they're even valued as part of the campus communities."

Gov. Gavin Newsom just called a special session of the Legislature and established a legal fund to challenge efforts to undo protections for vulnerable populations.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF AGING HIGHLIGHTS

ESSENTIAL, FREE RESOURCES TO SUPPORT CAREGIVERS FOR OLDER ADULTS AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES DURING NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH

California’s Network of Aging and Caregiving Services Offers Free Resources to Empower and Uplift Family Caregivers

SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Aging (CDA) is proud to recognize November as National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor and support the millions of individuals who provide care for their loved ones. This year, CDA continues its commitment to enhancing caregiver well-being by providing essential tools and resources across California. These resources, available through local Caregiver Resource Centers (CRCs) and Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), empower caregivers to thrive while caring for their loved ones.

“Caregiving is a great act of love, and this month – and every day – we uplift California’s caregivers as the under-recognized backbone of our families and communities,” said Susan DeMarois, director of the California Department of Aging. “We understand the sacrifices family caregivers make, and we are dedicated to ensuring that they have access to the tools, resources, and support they need to take care of themselves while providing for their families. We encourage all family caregivers to learn about and take advantage of the many free resources California makes available to meet their unique needs.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: To support the well-being of caregivers, the state provides free, essential tools and resources through the network of Caregiver Resource Centers and Area Agencies on Aging.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT: Family caregivers are the unsung heroes of California’s long-term care system, with every caregiver providing an average of 18 hours of care per week. That amounts to an estimated $81 billion annually in economic value to the state, with more than 4.5 million unpaid family caregivers across California balancing work, family, and caregiving responsibilities. Most caregivers are women, many working outside the home in addition to providing critical support to loved ones who rely on them, often at the expense of their own physical and emotional health.

According to recent statistics, one in five Americans currently provides care for a

loved one, with more than 4.5 million Californians providing unpaid care for family members, friends, or neighbors with chronic illnesses or disabilities. As the population ages, the need for caregiver support continues to grow, making it more important than ever for caregivers to know about the free services and resources available to them.

RESOURCES TO SUPPORT CAREGIVERS: CDA offers extensive support for unpaid family caregivers through the network of CRCs and AAAs. These local agencies provide free education and training, group counseling, respite care, and financial and legal assistance. Whether helping caregivers plan for long-term care or offering much-needed breaks, CRCs and AAAs are dedicated to ensuring caregivers have the resources and tools to succeed. In fiscal year 2022-2023, millions of family caregivers accessed these services, with thousands benefiting from professional care management and respite support. The Aging in California Resource Guide, with information on caregiver support and other topics, is another helpful resource that’s available in six languages.

To learn more about the support available to caregivers, visit CDA’s website at aging.ca.gov and connect with a local CRC or AAA to discover personalized resources that can help empower a caregiver's journey.

PROPOSED BILL WOULD FIGHT CRISIS OF

ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT INFECTIONS

in order to be able to provide modern health care."

Accordingto experts in the field, the system of developing new antibiotics is broken and doctors are running out of ways to treat deadly infections.

Lawmakers have proposed the PASTEUR Act to fix the pipeline. New antibiotics are critical but they must be used sparingly, which means private drug companies cannot recoup their investment.

David Hyun, director of the Antibiotic Resistance Project at the Pew Charitable Trusts, said the bill would establish a subscription model to fund research for certain drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

"It delinks their revenue from the volume of sales and provides an up-front payment to the companies purely based on the value of the public-health value of the new antibiotic," Hyun explained.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said patients in the U.S. contract 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections each year and more than 35,000 of them die. Experts estimate the U.S. spends $4.6 billion a year to treat infections caused by drug-resistant germs.

Dr. Sarah Doernberg, an infectious disease specialist and professor of medicine at the University of California-San Francisco, said the ability to treat infection dictates the safety of all kinds of medical procedures from giving birth to having surgery.

"We are able to operate ICUs and transplantation and give chemotherapy agent," Doernberg noted. "All of these things that we do that are very invasive and come with risks of infection, and we need to be able to treat the infections

WHAT OLDER ADULTS SHOULD KNOW THIS RSV SEASON

StatePoint

Eachyear, up to 160,000 older adults living in the United States are hospitalized and as many as 10,000 die due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a highly contagious virus that spreads through close contact with infected individuals, typically increasing during the fall and peaking in winter.

While most people with RSV develop mild symptoms, like that of a common cold, RSV can cause severe illness in older adults, especially those with certain medical conditions, like chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease or a weakened immune system. That’s why the American Lung Association, with support from GlaxoSmithKline, is encouraging adults at increased risk for severe illness to protect themselves against RSV. Here’s what they want you to know:

Severe Illness is Preventable: In 2023, RSV vaccines became available to help protect older adults from severe RSV illness, however, according to the most recent data, only 24% of older adults received it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends RSV vaccination for adults aged 75 and older, and adults ages 60 to 74 at increased risk for severe RSV disease. You can get vaccinated any time, but the best time to receive an RSV vaccination is late summer and early fall before RSV starts to spread in the community. If you have already received an RSV vaccine, you do not need another one. Talk with your healthcare provider about whether RSV vaccination is recommended for you.

“Vaccination is critical to saving lives and reducing hospitalizations during the respiratory virus season, but unfortunate-

ly, not enough older adults are getting vaccinated and disparities persist that put some populations at increased risk of severe illness,” says Albert Rizzo, MD., chief medical officer of the American Lung Association.

National Immunization Survey data shows that RSV vaccination rates vary, with 27% of white/non-Hispanic adults having received a vaccine, compared to 21% of Black/non-Hispanic adults, and 15% of Hispanic/Latino adults. At the same time, Black and Hispanic/Latino populations have higher rates of underlying conditions that increase the risk of severe RSV illness.

Healthy Habits Can Also Help Stop the Spread: In addition to vaccination, you can help stop the spread of RSV with these everyday actions:

• Washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds

• Covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue

• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick

• Staying at home when you are sick and avoiding close contact with others

• Cleaning frequently touched surfaces

• Taking steps for cleaner indoor air

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. However, if you do get sick with RSV this winter, be sure to watch for signs of severe illness, such as shortness of breath and worsening symptoms, and seek prompt medical attention if needed,” says Dr. Rizzo.

For more information about RSV in adults and to learn steps to prevent severe illness, visit Lung.org/rsv.

LO QUE LAS PERSONAS MAYORES DEBEN SABER ESTA TEMPORADA DE RSV

StatePoint

CALIFORNIA EMPOWERED IMMIGRANTS TO SPEAK UP AT WORK. TRUMP COULD END THEIR PROTECTIONS

Jeanne Kuang CalMatters

In30 years in America, Alejandro Gamez took any job he could as an undocumented worker — at fast food restaurants, factories and car washes and driving trucks, even when conditions were poor.

“I had no status,” he said. “I had no options.”

But after speaking up in 2017 about unpaid wages at an Inglewood car wash, his fortunes changed. As part of a state investigation into that employer’s labor practices, Gamez this year became eligible for four years of protection from deportation — and a temporary work permit that seemed to open doors overnight. The 51-year-old Hawthorne resident said he can apply for better, stable jobs that pay more and provide benefits. He now has a union-represented position in a college kitchen and a Social Security number to build his credit.

“It changed my life,” he said in Spanish. “It is giving me many job opportunities, to be better financially and to give a better life to my family.”

His opportunities are thanks to a recent federal program that grants temporary legal status to workers involved in certain labor investigations. With some of the nation’s strictest workplace laws but widespread concerns of employer retaliation, California has issued more than 200 requests to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, asking it to grant legal status to workers who report violations.

But just months after Gamez got his reprieve, the program may be on the chopping block: President-elect Donald Trump and his advisors have vowed mass deportations, a return to workplace immigration raids and the repeal of similar temporary protection programs.

Gamez’s attorney, Yvonne Medrano, said she’s expecting the program to be axed soon after Trump takes office Jan. 20. Her firm, the Los Angeles-based Bet Tzedek Legal Services, is no longer pursuing new cases under the program after representing workers seeking protections in 15 different workplace investigations.

“Removing this protection will return workers to a time when they fear deportation for

asking for minimum wage, their paychecks or any other protections they have,” Medrano said.

Other immigration attorneys in California had already stopped filing new applications before Election Day. They said they expect Homeland Security to honor the four-year reprieves that the department has already granted, but are uncertain what happens next.

“This is a discretionary program,” said Jessie Hahn, senior counsel for labor and employment policy at the National Immigration Law Center, an advocacy group. “We are not anticipating that if Trump were elected he would continue the program.”

A Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment about his intentions for the program.

It has created another group of immigrants who have been granted temporary permission to be in the United States as the chances of a federal immigration overhaul have grown ever slimmer — making their prospects heavily dependent on the see-saw of each presidential administration.

The program, one of several Biden administration efforts to boost the enforcement of

Immigration attorneys and advocates say while some applicants are seeking reprieves from active deportation cases, most have been living and working without papers undetected, meaning they’ve come forward to federal immigration authorities for the first time.

It’s not clear how many of those workers are in California. A Homeland Security spokesperson would not release state-by-state figures, citing “ongoing investigations.”

labor laws, aims to give state investigators easier access to witnesses who may otherwise fear reprisal for making workplace complaints.

It’s similar to the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that gave work permits and temporary deportation protections to immigrants who had been brought to the U.S. without authorization as children. About 500,000 residents have that form of legal status, but the program has stopped granting new applications after challenges in the federal courts. Trump tried to rescind the program in his last term; Stephen Miller, a close Trump advisor, said he will do so again, the New York Times has reported.

Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement is much narrower — 7,700 workers have benefitted since January 2023. Anyone who’s not a U.S. citizen can apply if they can prove they were working for an employer under investigation. First, a state or federal labor agency must submit a letter to Homeland Security saying they need the cooperation of worker witnesses in each investigation.

Those granted deferred action are shielded from deportation and allowed to work legally for four years, but there is no path toward permanent residency. Some recipients see

But California is an eager participant in the program; Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration says it was the first state to file a letter supporting worker protections. The state is home to nearly 1.5 million workers who are undocumented immigrants, making up more than 7% of the workforce.

Such workers are a frequent focus of the state’s labor investigations, and labor advocates say undocumented workers routinely fear both losing their jobs and being reported to immigration authorities for complaining about workplace violations.

“This fear can prevent them from fully cooperating with labor enforcement agencies in reporting and corroborating violations of the law,” Daniel Lopez, spokesperson for the state Labor Commissioner’s Office, said in a statement. “Ultimately, fewer protections undermine workers and impact responsible employers.”

In the past two years, the office, which investigates wage theft, has sent letters supporting deportation protections in 136 workplace investigations covering potentially hundreds of workers. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health has sent at least 12 letters. The Agricultural Labor Relations Board, which oversees farmworkers’ rights, has sent 10, and the Civil Rights Department, which investigates workplace discrimination complaints, has sent 60, spokespersons said.

The state has even paid to help immigrants get work permits. Last year,

Newsom announced $4.5 million to pay for free legal services to help farmworkers who are involved in labor investigations apply for deferred action. The money, allocated through mid-2026, has so far helped screen more than 500 workers for eligibility and 175 apply for the program.

There are as many as 800,000 seasonal and year-round farmworkers in California; at least half are believed to be undocumented.

“Agricultural regions have very limited access to immigration legal services,” said Jason Montiel, spokesperson for the Department of Social Services, which administers the grant to five legal aid groups statewide. “Providing farmworkers direct access to immigration legal services when their labor rights are violated increases the likelihood that they will file labor claims and collaborate with labor agencies.”

Newsom’s spokespersons did not respond to an inquiry about what will happen with the state grant program if federal rules change.

Nicole Gorney, a supervising attorney with VIDAS Legal Services, which is receiving a state grant, said that she has 12 farmworker clients waiting to be granted deferred action. She had hoped the state would expand the program to include workers in other industries.

“There are still a lot of workers out there who may qualify but really don’t want to come out of the shadows,” she said the morning after the election.

Gamez’ deferred action was granted in connection with retaliation claims he and his coworkers filed against Century Car Wash in 2018. That year, they had also filed wage theft claims with the state Labor Commissioner’s Office. According to state records, they told the office their managers made them show up earlier and leave later than the businesses’ opening hours, but their time-sheets didn’t match all the hours they worked. The car wash’s co-owners denied the claims, and told the state the time-sheets were accurate.

After demanding payment from his managers, Gamez said he was fired, and told to leave in front of customers. According to state records, he and his coworkers won the wage claims in 2021; a state hearing officer ruled Gamez was owed more than $20,000. But the state is still investigating claims the workers were fired and questioned about their immigration status in retaliation for speaking up. Last year at Gamez’ attorney’s request, the Labor Commissioner’s Office sent a letter to Homeland Security to request deportation protection for the workers.

“The ongoing investigation … is being conducted by our Retaliation Complaint Investigation unit and requires worker cooperation and testimony,” Labor Commissioner Lilia Garcia-Brower wrote in the letter.

Reached by phone, one of Century Car Wash’s owners deferred to the co-owner, who did not respond to a request for comment.

Gamez said his deferred action status kept him calm last week as many immigrants feared for their futures under a second Trump administration.

“Removing this protection will return workers to a time when they fear deportation for asking for minimum wage, their paychecks or any other protections they have.”

Others who received the protection remain afraid.

Alejandra Montoya came to the United States five years ago fleeing “problems in the family,” she said, and found work in the Central Valley’s fields. She had a degree in business administration in her native Mexico, and said she never intended to be an undocumented immigrant. But she had a son, and stayed to raise him in Bakersfield.

Montoya said she enjoys farm work, despite the hard days on her hands and knees picking and bunching carrots for $3.05 per box. On a good day, when the field conditions are forgiving, she can take home $150 or more, she said.

Working for a contractor hired by Grimmway Farms, she said she kept her head down, until one day last September when a coworker, Rosa Sanchez, was struck by a truck and killed in the field next to hers. Montoya said workers had raised concerns about that driver and she believed the accident was preventable. Some of the workers were told to keep working around Sanchez’ body, she said. Stunned, and now knowing what else to do, she did.

It was “traumatic,” she said through a translator. “Inhumane.”

In March, the state’s workplace safety agency issued more than $65,000 of citations against Grimmway, the contractor Esparza Enterprises and another contractor that employed the driver, alleging serious safety violations for allowing employees to work “in close proximity to a Commercial Truck being driven in an unsafe manner,” according to files obtained through a public records request. Federal and state records show the driver was backing up when the truck struck Sanchez.

The company and its contractors have contested the citations. Esparza did not respond to a request for comment. In a statement, Grimmway spokesperson Dana Brennan wrote that the company has strict policies prohibiting retaliation against employees or contractors’ employees who report issues at work.

“We have a confidential, anonymous, bilingual hotline where employees can report ethical concerns,” Brennan wrote. “As we have since we first learned of this tragic accident, we are committed to working with authorities throughout their investigation and extend our deepest sympathies to Ms. Sanchez’s family and her co-workers on this grievous loss.”

As a potential witness to the accident, Montoya applied for deferred action with the help of the United Farm Workers, and has since become more active with the organization, encouraging coworkers to apply and speak at a union convention in September.

The day after the election, she said she’s both relieved she got her work permit this year and fearful that she’s given her information to federal immigration authorities. In the fields, most of the workers were talking about Trump’s victory, “about what will happen with us now.”

“It protects us from deportation,” she said of the program. “Even so, the fear exists … Whenever he wants, he can take it away.”

“No tenía estatus”, dijo. “No tenía opciones”.

THE IMPACT OF THE 2024 ELECTION

Selen

Ethnic Media Services

Thepresidential election has left a country questioning outcomes on political violence, women, immigrants and the environment.

Through all these issues, November 5 shattered public assumptions that an increasingly multiracial America necessarily means an increasingly progressive one, said political, immigration and economic experts at a Friday, November 8 Ethnic Media Services briefing on election insights.

Political violence

There’s a similar public misconception around political violence: “We seem to assume that either we can predict it or else it’s not going to happen at all, which is why we’re constantly surprised when it does happen,” said Dr. Robert Pape, professor of political science at the University of Chicago and founder and director of the Chicago Project on Security and Threats (CPOST).

Already, as of November 8, the Justice Department disclosed a murder-for-hire plot for an accused Iranian government asset to kill President-elect Trump before the election.

“We need to be watchful against this. It would not come as a surprise to me if there are more assassination attempts between now and January 20 … and in the first 100 days after that, especially if he proceeds with aggressive deportation plans, which include sending ICE agents into blue sanctuary cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Portland … where immigration protests turned violent in 2020,” said Pape.

“Political violence operates like a wildfire. We can measure the material that can combust, but we can’t predict the triggering lightning strikes, thrown cigarette butts, the unattended campfires,” he added. “Because the Washington resistance march this January, for instance, is planned to be a peaceful gathering of 50,000, that doesn’t mean it will be. We’re in a tinderbox of a country.”

Women

“What contributes to political violence are narratives that blame any one group of people for the outcome of this election — like that women lost the election for a woman candidate,” said Kelly Dittmar, research director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. 2024 exit polls show that 54% of women and 44% of men voted for Harris, while 44% of women and 54% of men voted for Trump.

The 2024 voting gender gap, where women were 10 points less likely than men to support Trump, is similar to those in recent elections; in 2020 the gap was 12 points, while in 2016 it was 11.

Women have been more likely than men to support the Democratic candidate and less likely to support the Republican in every election since 1980 — “But these aggregate counts alone are insufficient to truly understand the women’s vote,” said Dittmar.

While most white women (52%) voted Republican, for example, over 90% of Black women voted Democrat.

An AP VoteCast exit poll shows that a third of Black women said Harris being the first woman president “was the most important factor” in their vote, compared to 14% of all women and 11% of all men.

“We talk about the gender of the voters, but we also have to recognize the ways in which gender plays a role in who we’re willing to vote for,” she continued.

An October 2024 Public Religion Research Institute survey found that, while the 43% of Americans overall agreeing that “society as a whole has become too soft and feminine” is down from 48% agreeing in 2023, partisan divides have more than doubled since 2011.

Now, 73% of Republicans say that society is too soft and feminine, compared with 42% of independents and 16% of Democrats.

“It’s less about Harris’ identity, and more about why a man tapping into grievances about threatened masculinity did not disqualify him from winning,” added Dittmar.

Immigrants and Asian Americans

“Without sugar coating it, this is the worst outcome we could have expected … That the majority of the popular vote is against us,” said Vanessa Cardenas, executive director of America’s Voice. “Economic issues overtook everything.”

A September 2024 Pew Research poll found that 81% of registered voters said “the economy will be very important to their vote.”

An AP exit poll found “voters broadly believed that Trump would be better equipped than Harris to handle the economy and jobs.”

“It’s no surprise that immigration was another major motivating factor, because Republicans ran the most vicious anti-immigrant campaign of any major party in modern history,” Cardenas continued.

An October 2024 America’s Voice report using AdImpact data finds that Republican candidates and organizations spent “$964 million on 1,892 unique TV ads that mention immigration so far this year.”

“Immigration itself is being redefined,” explained Cardenas. “As conversations around ending birthright citizenship, TPS and DACA are becoming mainstreamed, the lines between ‘legal’ and ‘undocumented’ are being blurred.”

“The Asian American voting bloc is particularly supportive of pro-immigrant laws, especially those

allowing citizens to bring relatives to the U.S., said John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC).

The AAPI community has the highest proportion of immigrants among all racial and ethnic groups, with about two-thirds of Asian Americans and one-sixth of Pacific Islanders born outside the U.S.

An October 2024 Pew poll found that 82% of Asian American immigrants supported prioritizing family immigration policies.

An AAJC voter survey conducted that month found that overall, however, the issues most important to AAPI voters were similar] to those most important to voters generally, the top three being jobs and the economy (86%), inflation (85%) and healthcare (85%).

Green jobs

“These issues have led to Trump being the first Republican president to be elected with having won the popular vote in more than 20 years,” said Ben Jealous, executive director of the Sierra Club and former president and CEO of the NAACP. “You can’t account for this without looking at the deindustrialization of our nation in the last 30 years after NAFTA.”

Since 1994, when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect under President Clinton, the U.S. lost over 80,000 manufacturing plants through 2014, the last year that Census Business Dynamics Statistics data is available.

In comparison, there are approximately 19,500 cities and towns in the U.S.

“That means that most Americans now live where

there used to be a factory, and when that factory shut down, what shot up was despair, poverty, joblessness, drug abuse and death from suicide,” said Jealous. “We’ve got to get back to the basic American formula of building an economy that lifts all boats by doing what we’ve always done: designing new things by following the science, then building them here.”

With the Inflation Reduction Act, passed under President Biden in 2022 and authorizing $783 billion for domestic energy and climate change spending, the largest in U.S. history, “We’re doing something we haven’t done in my lifetime: opening factories through the biggest economic opportunity on earth, a chance to change the way the world is powered,” he continued.

As of August 2024, Climate Power data shows that U.S. companies have reported 646 new clean energy projects, creating 334,565 new jobs and driving $372 billion in new investments.

“The turn to the right that we saw is a straight line from us betraying the working people of this country,” said Jealous, adding that this was reflected in Trump’s own performance: “In 2016, he promised to kill Obamacare, and his own party rebelled. This time, Vice President-elect Vance attacked the new green jobs as ‘table scraps,’ and Republican voters roared back.”

“In many red states, voters can be divided on whether or not they want clean technology, but they’re united on wanting it produced there, because they understand that their fortunes are tied to it,” he added. “Trump can say what he wants, but this is the future, and people aren’t going back.”

EL IMPACTO DE LAS ELECCIONES

Selen Ozturk Ethnic Media Services

COALITION FORMS TO REAFFIRM 'CALIFORNIA VALUES' IN 2ND TRUMP ERA MIXED

RESULTS FOR CA MEASURES TO END FACTORY FARMING

Thisweekend, a new coalition called "We Are California" is holding meetings up and down the state, preparing to resist what it sees as anticipated attacks from the incoming Trump administration.

Hundreds of nonprofits have joined the coalition, whose mission is to promote inclusion, community and democratic norms.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, explained the purpose of the coalition.

"What are we bracing for? Exactly what Donald Trump said he was going to do: mass deportations, family separation, worksite raids," Salas explained. "These are all things that he has done in the past. But what we're expecting and what we're bracing for is a scale of attack on our community that is unprecedented."

The coalition hopes by banding together, its members can fight any erosion of civil rights for LGBTQ+ people, immi-

grants and others. The gatherings this weekend will take place online and in person in the Bay Area, Fresno, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

Salas pointed out California has also put limits on how new immigration detention centers can be built.

"We can also model what it means to resist, but what it means to defy," Salas emphasized. "Because I think last time, we resisted. This time around, it's really about putting in place everything that interrupts this agenda."

Ameasure

to end factory farming in Sonoma County has only received about 15% of the vote so farso supporters are gathering tomorrow in Santa Rosa to find a new way forward. Measure J would have required big dairy and poultry farms classified as concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, to downsize significantly.

Cassie King, a member of the group End Factory Farming, said they raised the issue's profile - and will keep up the fight.

"The fact that the industry had to spend millions of dollars and rally so hard to defeat Measure J shows that they understand the public opposition to factory farming is growing and this system is on its way out," she said.

The No on J organization did not respond to a request for comment. In mailers before the election, it warned that Measure J would have cost jobs, hurt tax revenues as large farms shut down, led to higher food prices, and opened up the land to unwanted development.

Almira Tanner, lead organizer with the group Direct Action Everywhere, said cases of extreme animal confinement, cruelty and neglect have been exposed at factory farms around the country. And she calls the waste pits a huge environmental hazard.

"One of these dairy CAFOs in Sonoma County produces more waste than the human population of Petaluma. And that is not treated often. It is leaching into our groundwater," she explained. "It's emitting enormous amounts of methane, accelerating climate change."

Tanner noted that a similar initiative in Berkeley called Measure DD is currently winning with 60% of the vote. DD was intended to target the stables associated with Golden Gate Fields Racetrack, which ended up closing in June, five months before the election.

"There were up to 1,400 horses there at any given moment. They were in confinement for 22 to 23 hours a day, and of course, being trained and raced to death for profit," she continued.

Q&A: DAFNE KEEN AND HOW DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE BROUGHT HER BACK TO A CHERISHED ROLE IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

Thissummer proved that superhero films are far from losing steam and popularity, with the return of two iconic Marvel characters and the actors who have made them legendary, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The film, which broke the record for highest grossing Rrated film of all time, no doubt earned its popularity in large part from the portrayals of the aforementioned actors, who have been playing the superheroes for quite some time, in the case of Jackman it’s been decades, having starred as Wolverine/Logan in 10 films since 2000.

Although this is the third iteration in the Deadpool series which started in 2016 and focuses on the life of Reynolds’ “merc with a mouth” Deadpool/Wade Wilson, this also serves as an extension of what was seen as the final Wolverine film, 2017’s Logan. That film also starred 12 year old Dafne Keen as Laura, also known as X-23, who is a child used as a lab experiment to create a new Wolverine-type mutant.

Despite Logan’s hesitancy to connect with other people in general, he’s drawn to Laura and understands her perspective of the world and her circumstances. Together the unruly pair go on an adventure to help Laura escape the clutches of the organization responsible for the torture she endured.

The film ends on a somber note when the pair are separated, but Laura is able to escape and live her life.

The return of Wolverine was eagerly awaited because of the finality of that film, so seeing Wolverine return was a huge draw for the team up in Deadpool & Wolverine What people did not expect, and what was one of many huge cameo surprises in the film, was that Dafne Keen returns as an older Laura. This ended up becoming one of the most emotional and enduring beats in the film, and a fan favorite reunion. Although, because of multiverse reasons, this isn’t the same Wolverine Laura grew

fond of in Logan, but despite that they are able to create a connection and help each other once again.

Recently Dafne Keen spoke with El Observador and provided a behind the scenes perspective on what it meant to come back to the role she had in her childhood, and what it was like to work with Hugh Jackman again on this blockbuster film with characters that are beloved by fans.

Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine is available to stream on Disney+ now.

Earlier this year you were doing press interviews for the character Jecki Lon, for the Star Wars show The Acolyte. And at the same time, without the public knowing it, you were holding back that secret that you were involved with Deadpool & Wolverine with your cameo of the beloved Laura. What was it like having to hold back on talking about that secret role you had been working on?

It was quite fun. I think I really enjoyed keeping that secret. It felt like my own little secret, and it was really fun when I got to share it with the world. And I'm really happy the way things turned out. It was quite fun to lie to the press.

What was the experience like being able to reach back into that role from nearly eight years ago?

There's something so beautiful about the mixture of the sarcasm and the grit and the rawness of these characters.
-Dafne Keen

I think getting back into it was really fun. I think acting with Hugh is always such an honor to me, and I always feel so lucky that I get to do it. And honestly, the script was so special, and it felt like such a love letter to Marvel fans and to the Fox universe. It was just really exciting to get to be a part of that and to get to act with the people that I got to act with and to work with Shawn, who is just such a wonderful director who I've looked up to

for years. It was just a really wonderful experience.

And as wacky as the Deadpool films have been over the years, why do you think it works to also have this emotional weight to it and have characters that come from the much more solemn Logan in this film?

I think there's something so beautiful about the contrast of Wolverine and Deadpool, and I think that's what really

works about it, the opposites meet in the middle in a way. And there's something so wonderful about this duo. I think a lot of it is how special Hugh and Ryan's friendship is and Shawn's and the love that they all have for these characters and the love they have for the fans. And there's something so beautiful about the mixture of the sarcasm and the grit and the rawness of these characters.

Given that Deadpool & Wolverine involves alternate multiverses and many cameos from other eras of Marvel films, did you go back to research and watch any of the Marvel Studios films to get an idea of where this might be headed?

Yeah, I did. I definitely did. I did a lot of watching of all of my fellow cameos' movies. That's something that I really enjoyed doing. I rewatched all the Fantastic Fours, which I loved back in the day. I watched the Blades, I watched the Elektra movie. It was just really fun. I got to watch these movies that I already loved, that I'd already watched just in a natural way and getting to understand the multiverse as someone who now was going to be a part of it. It was really cool.

It's really cool when your job is watch good movies, and my job was to watch Avengers and X-Men [movies].

And I would be like, "I am just doing research tonight, which is a full movie."

What was that process of

figuring out how to play Laura after all that time had gone by from Logan?

It was really, really wonderful. And getting to play her and getting to finally give her that moment to thank Logan was so special to me and kind of giving her a happy ending that's still tragic because it's still not her Wolverine. It was beautiful. And like I've said before, I think acting with Hugh is my biggest privilege and the biggest honor. So anytime I get to do anything with Hugh, I'm there.

And on reflection, of these two projects where you've been Laura/X-23, what do you think the legacy of the character that you brought to life is?

I honestly think Laura's legacy is the legacy that Logan left her with. I think it's, "don't be what they made you." And I think when we meet her in Deadpool again, she's been pretty true to that. I think that's something that's really beautiful.

After the film premiered at Comic Con this year, days before its theatrical release, did you guys have an idea then of what the reaction would be from fans and the audiences from then on?

I think we hoped, and our expectations were not only met, but exceeded to a level that I think none of us really were expecting. At least I wasn't expecting it to be what it was, especially as a cameo. I was really surprised by it in a really wonderful way, and I feel so grateful. Even the experience of getting to celebrate the movie opening at Hall H, it was really exciting.

So for those that have yet to see the film, what would be your pitch to get them to watch it on Disney+?

My pitch would be that you get to watch it from the comfort of your own home, that it's a fun movie, it's full of action, it's full of love. And it can be really human at times and pretty devastating. And I think it's a pretty special movie, and you should definitely watch it.
