It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them. First, it was the white working class, and now it is Latino and Black workers as well. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.

Today, while the very rich are doing phenomenally well, 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and we have more income and wealth inequality than ever before. Unbelievably, real, inflation-accounted-for weekly wages for the average American worker are actually lower now than they were 50 years ago.

Today, despite an explosion in technology and worker productivity, many young people will have a worse standard of living than their parents. And many of them worry that Artificial Intelligence and robotics will make a bad situation even worse.

Today, despite spending far more per capita than other countries, we remain the only wealthy nation not to guarantee health care to all as a human right and we pay, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. We, alone among major countries, cannot even guarantee paid family and medical leave.

Today, despite strong opposition from a majority of Americans, we continue to spend billions funding the extremist Netanyahu government’s all-out war against the Palestinian people which has led to the horrific humanitarian disaster of mass malnutrition and the starvation of thousands of children.

Will the big money interests and wellpaid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real les-

from this disastrous campaign? Will they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing? Do they have any ideas as to how we can take on the increasingly powerful Oligarchy which has so much economic and political power? Probably not.

In the coming weeks and months those of us concerned about grassroots democracy and economic justice need to have some very serious political discussions.

Stay tuned.

Probablemente no.

Elections

have consequences, as California is likely to learn when Donald Trump once again moves into the White House.

The state has been a bastion of antiTrump sentiment ever since the bombastic billionaire real estate tycoon first ventured into politics nearly a decade ago.

Its political figures — particularly Gov. Gavin Newsom, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Senator-elect Adam Schiff — have sought and achieved notoriety for their public denunciations of Trump.

Trump has responded in kind. As president, he attempted to thwart some California policies, such as its reductions of farmers’ supplies, and as a candidate portraying Vice President Kamala Harris’s home state as a hellhole of crime and social decay.

There’s no reason to believe that Trump, despite election night promises to bridge the nation’s stark conflicts, will not continue using California as a punching bag during his second stint as president.

The agricultural water conflict is likely to resurface because the state is still trying to reduce farmers’ share. Trump’s promised crackdown on undocumented immigrants would likely have its greatest impact on California. The state’s aggressive crusade to reduce reliance on carbon-based fuels will conflict with Trump’s pledge to ramp up oil and gas production.

That’s just three points of friction between California and Trump’s second presidency, and many more are out there such as gun control and transgender participation in women’s sports.

California officialdom appears ready for four years of confrontation. On election night, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas told Politico, “California will do everything

we can to protect America from Donald Trump.” Attorney General Rob Bonta promised to wage legal battles against Trump on gun control and abortion rights, telling the political news outlet, “We have gone down to the detail of what court do we file in.”

Positioning as a Trump foe is a slam dunk tactic for California politicians, especially those, such as Bonta, who may aspire to succeed Newsom as governor two years hence.

But, one might wonder, what does Harris’s defeat and Trump’s victory bode for Newsom? He will no doubt lead the opposition if Trump tries to punish the state, as he anticipated in a recent interview.

“They’re not going to wait to wind up. It’s ready, fire, aim — not ready, aim, fire,” Newsom said. “And that is going to create a dynamic that will be profound in two senses — from a governing perspective and also from a political attack perspective.”

However, would he take the next step of joining what will be a clutch of Democratic politicians angling to succeed Trump in 2028?

While laboriously building a national political profile in the last two years, Newsom repeatedly denied any ambition of becoming a presidential candidate, saying at one point he has “sub-zero interest.”

National political media never bought the line and continued to portray him as a potential aspirant for the White House. However, whatever ambition Newsom may have had if Joe Biden bowed out this year was dashed when Democratic leaders immediately anointed Harris as the substitute.

Her decisive defeat probably means that she has hit the political ceiling, particularly since initial election night finger-pointing dwelled on her shortcomings as a candidate, as well as the Democratic Party. The door is now open for Newsom to run, unless he truly intends to finish out his second term as governor and return to life as a restaurateur and wine merchant.

Newsom has spent half of his 57 years climbing up the political ladder, one rung at a time. Is he really willing to give it up? What he does in the coming months, either entering the Democratic Party’s forthcoming battle royale or exiting the national political arena, will answer the question.

CEDARS-SINAI IN LA USES COLLEGE INTERNSHIP TO DIVERSIFY HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE

Suzanne Potter California News Service

Lack of diversity in the medical field is a big problem.

Data show fewer than 6% of active physicians in the U.S. are Black and fewer than 7% are Hispanic, so Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is working to diversify across the campus. The Next Generation Healthcare Pathways program offers a 10-week paid internship.

Daniela Villegas, the program's manager added that the first-level DISCOVER program (Dynamic Internship for Students Cultivating Opportunities and Vision in Healthcare Education and Research) exposes college students to an array of possible careers.

"We like to pretty much allow them to job shadow, to have mentors, to just network across the medical center," Villegas outlined, "To be able to see if health care is their passion."

You can fill out an interest form at the Cedars-Sinai Next Gen website here https://bit.ly/3Ar5gYQ.

Students hear from professionals in a range of fields, not just doctors and nurses but jobs without a 5-10 year training requirement, like radiology technologists, phlebotomists, administrators and more. Once you complete the DISCOVER program, the next step is the ELEVATE program, which offers a one-year position while you finish your degree.

Villegas encouraged students to take a chance on the Next Gen program, even if they do not know what they want to do after graduation.

"We always like to not just target the '4.0' students," Villegas explained. "We really like to open the doors to just anyone that wants to come learn, network experience, get the experience hands on. And again, Cedars-Sinai is huge and we will find a career for everyone."

Cedars also has a two-year Youth Employment Development program for high school students in partnership with Fairfax High School, which pays minimum wage and counts for school credit.

8 WAYS TO LIVE HEALTHIER IN 2025

Take steps to limit risk for cardiovascular disease

Family Features

Thelast decade has seen a surge in cardiovascular risk factors such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, each of which raises the risks of developing heart disease and stroke. These trends are leading researchers to conclude that the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) will continue to rise.

More than 60% of U.S. adults will have some type of CVD by 2050, according to forecasted projections from the American Heart Association, which is celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all. Additionally, total costs related to CVD are expected to nearly triple in that time to more than $1.8 trillion.

The increase will be driven by an older, more diverse population, but these risk factors are rising even among children and adults.

“We recognize the landscape of cardiovascular health will change over the next three decades because of the coming tsunami of rising health care costs, an older population living longer and increasing numbers of people from underresourced populations,” said American Heart Association volunteer Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA. “Yet these are still leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.”

While continued systematic changes are needed in science, policy and health care, the majority of CVD is preventable at an individual level. You can help turn the tide on the dire outlook of CVD while improving your own health by following and encouraging others to follow the American Heart Association’s “Life’s Essential 8.”

Eat better. Aim for an overall healthy eating pattern including whole foods, fruits and vegetables, lean protein, nuts, seeds and cooking with olive and canola oils.

Be active. Adults should get 2 1/2 hours of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. Kids should have 60 minutes every day, including play and structured activities.

Quit tobacco. Use of inhaled nicotine delivery products, which includes traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and vaping, is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

Get healthy sleep. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Children require 10-16 hours for ages 5 and younger, including naps; 9-12 hours for ages 6-12; and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18.

Manage weight. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight has many benefits. Body mass index is a useful gauge. Optimal BMI is less than 25, but less than 18.5 is considered underweight. You can calculate it online or consult a health care professional.

Control cholesterol. High levels of nonHDL, or “bad,” cholesterol can lead to heart disease. Your health care professional can consider non-HDL cholesterol as the preferred number to monitor, rather than total cholesterol, because it can be measured without fasting beforehand and is reliably calculated among all people.

Manage blood sugar. Most of the food you eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) your body uses as energy. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.

Manage blood pressure. Keeping your blood pressure within acceptable ranges can keep you healthier longer. Levels less than 120/80 mm Hg are optimal. High blood pressure is defined as 130-139 mm Hg systolic pressure (the top number in a reading) or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic pressure (bottom number).

VOTERS AGREE TO FIX UP CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS. $10 BILLION CONSTRUCTION BOND PASSES

The last California school bond measure in 2020 failed, so school officials say they are desperate for money to fix crumbling buildings and other infrastructure.

Carolyn Jones CalMatters

With California’s fund for school repairs on empty, voters approved a $10 billion bond to pay for much-needed upgrades at K-12 schools and community colleges.

“This is very good news for all students,” said Adam Clark, superintendent of Mt. Diablo Unified in Contra Costa County. “In our district, we have so many fundamental repair needs – electrical, plumbing, roofs, windows – and this relieves the pressure. It means we can get to work.” Proposition 2 will help fix dry rot, mold, malfunctioning electrical systems, gas leaks and other health and safety hazards that plague hundreds of aging campuses. At least 38% of the state’s K-12 students attend schools that don’t meet the minimum safety standards, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.

“This is critical for the education of our students, in every community, up and down the state,” said Rebekah Kalleen, a legislative advocate for the Coalition for Adequate School Housing, a nonprofit that pushes for school facilities funding. “Students need to be in safe facilities. Learning outcomes depend on it.”

Schools are especially desperate because the state’s last school facilities bond, a $15 billion bond in 2020, failed. That has left the state’s school repair fund depleted, with an ever-growing list of needs. The Public Policy Institute of California estimates that it would cost more than $100 billion to fix every leaking roof and broken heater on California’s campuses.

Since California overhauled its school funding formula in the late 1980s, state and local bonds are the only source of money for school repairs and modernization. Prop. 2 gives $8.5 billion to K-12 schools and $1.5 billion to community colleges. It needed a simple majority to pass.

Voters appear to favor Proposition 2 Californians showed steady support for Prop. 2, according to polls. A survey in October found that 52% of voters favored the proposition, with higher levels of support among Democrats and voters in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Inland Empire. That support has been fairly consistent since the Legislature in June approved putting the bond on the ballot.

Prop. 2 garnered bipartisan endorsements, including from the state Democratic and Republican parties, the California Teachers Association, the California Chamber of Commerce, as well as a slew of education organizations. Supporters are confident that Prop. 2 will not meet the same fate as the previous school facilities bond. That bond, Proposition 13, was confusing to voters because it shared a name with the famed 1970s tax reform measure, Kalleen said. Other factors contributing to the defeat were the election date, which was March 2020, as pandemic shutdowns began, and the large dollar amount of the bond.

As of Oct. 24, Prop. 2 backers had raised $12.3 million, with the bulk coming from the California Teachers Association, California Building Industry Association and Kalleen’s group.

The only formal opposition to Prop. 2 was from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and Assemblymember Bill Essayli, a Republican from Corona, who argued that taxpayers already give ample support to schools, and the state should pay for school repairs out of the existing general fund budget. They also argued that sooner or later, state bonds translate to higher taxes.

“Bonds are borrowed money that must be paid back, plus interest, even if that means cutting vital programs to do it,” the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association wrote in its ballot argument. “Governor Newsom recently declared a budget emergency because California spends more than it takes in. Children in school today will be drowning in new debt for decades if Prop. 2 passes.”

As of Oct. 24, opponents had not reported any campaign donations to the Secretary of State.

“Right now, we have classrooms that are so badly rusted that chunks of iron beams in the roof regularly fall off the buildings.”

-Eric Gross, superintendent of Pacific Elementary school

The San Francisco-based, nonprofit public interest law firm Public Advocates agrees with the need for school facilities funding, but has opposed the way California would distribute the money. The state would give out most of the money based on matching grants, which means that school districts that can raise more money through local bonds — typically, larger and wealthier districts — can collect more Prop 2 funds.

Prop. 2 sets aside $1 billion for smaller and lower-income districts and includes a sliding scale that would give more money to smaller districts, but the scale is not nearly wide enough, Public Advocates argued.

Public Advocates had threatened to sue if the measure passes, but on Tuesday night the firm’s managing attorney John Affeldt said no decision had been made yet.

“Voters appear to be correctly recognizing the desperate need for capital financing for our public schools, but I don’t think this is an endorsement of the Legislature’s plan to distribute the funds,” Affeldt said Tuesday night.

But even with the inequities, Prop. 2 is a lifeline for most school districts, especially those with limited abilities to raise local money.

“Right now, we have classrooms that are so badly rusted that chunks of iron beams in the roof regularly fall off the buildings,” said Eric Gross, superintendent of Pacific Elementary in Davenport, near Santa Cruz. “If Prop. 2 passes, we can replace dilapidated classrooms and build new classrooms to accommodate our growing enrollment.”

Carolyn Jones CalMatters

EXPERTS EXPRESS CAUTION OVER POST-ELECTION AI DEEPFAKES

CA law that tried to regulate them is on hold

is still in place.

As the votes are being counted, experts warned people to be wary of videos purporting to show voting irregularities because they could be artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes.

On Monday, three U.S. intelligence agencies said Russian internet trolls are behind a fake video claiming Arizona is changing voter rolls in Kamala Harris' favor.

Chris McIsaac, a governance fellow at the right-leaning think tank R Street, said people should be skeptical of seemingly shocking videos.

"The key for people who are consuming information online is to remain suspicious of things they see that garner an emotional response," McIsaac cautioned. "Just be sure to try to doublecheck multiple sources to try to figure out what is true or what is false."

Just last week, the elections board in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, declared a widely seen video of someone destroying ballots marked Donald Trump to be fake. Bucks County election officials asked the Pennsylvania state attorney general to look into the case.

In August, California lawmakers passed a bill to give judges the power to order people who post AI deepfakes to take them down or face fines. The law is on hold after the creator of a deepfake targeting Kamala Harris sued on constitutional grounds.

McIsaac noted Minnesota's law banning deceptive election-related videos

"We've seen about 20 states take some form of action to try to regulate the use of deepfakes and election communications in some fashion," McIsaac observed. "The vast majority of those attempted to do so by requiring labels be included on any manipulated video or audio."

The problem is, inflammatory videos tend to go viral and be shared millions of times, whereas the rebuttal from the authorities tends to have comparatively little reach. If questionable clips emerge over the coming days, people can look to county and state election officials and to law enforcement for guidance on the videos' veracity.

CA CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM SUFFERS BLOW WITH PASSAGE OF PROP. 36

Advocates of criminal-justice reform warn the passage of Proposition 36 will mean a sharp reduction in funds to anti-crime initiatives. The measure raises the penalties for certain drug and theft crimes, making more of them felonies that carry jail time.

Will Matthews, a spokesperson for Californians for Safety and Justice, a nonprofit public-safety advocacy organization, said voters were fed false promises that Prop. 36 would reduce property crime by forcing more people to choose between treatment and incarceration.

"It really was a disingenuous initiative that now will result in billions of dollars being diverted away from treating addiction, treating mental illness, and helping folks coming home from a period of incarceration," he said.

Prop. 36 repeals parts of Proposition 47, which funneled the savings from reduced prison costs into programs designed to combat poverty and addiction - the root causes of crime.

Christopher Hallenbrook, a political science professor with Cal State Dominguez Hills, agrees that Prop 36 will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars, money he says will be diverted from anti-crime initiatives.

"There's no way you can pass '36' and not put more people in jail. The more money you're spending on incarceration, the less money you're spending on other things," Hallenbrook stated. "That

is definitely an accurate assessment for Prop. 36 and it seems to be one that voters decided they were OK with."

Prop. 36 was largely funded by such retail giants as Home Depot, Target and Walmart, hoping that the prospect of higher penalties would deter retail crime.

- Fiscal General Rob Bonta

“Congress is an environment of legislative scarcity,” he said. “California is an environment of legislative abundance.”

Adam Kovacevich, fundador y director ejecu-

RETURN OF THE RESISTANCE STATE: WHAT ANOTHER TRUMP PRESIDENCY WILL MEAN FOR CALIFORNIA

Alexei Koseff CalMatters

Expect four more years of combative showdowns between California’s Democratic leadership and a second Trump White House.

Inthe early hours of Wednesday November 6, Former President Donald Trump won a second term after four years out of the White House, likely thrusting California back into leading the resistance against him.

The Associated Press made its call at 3 a.m., declaring that the Republican defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who would have become the first woman president and the most powerful Californian in four decades.

Instead, Californians now face a repeat of Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021 — another four years of governance consumed by combative showdowns between the state’s Democratic leadership and Washington, D.C., possibly distracting from or even setting back progress on addressing California’s own problems.

Though many were rooting for a Harris victory — which could have taken California’s priorities nationwide and brought additional resources home — state officials, industry leaders and activists prepared for this outcome. Trump, after all, routinely made California a punching bag in his campaign.

Across state government, officials have been gaming out a response to “Trump-proof” California. Gov. Gavin Newsom and his budget team are developing a proposal for a disaster relief fund after the former president repeatedly threatened to withhold emergency aid for wildfire recovery from California because of its water policy.

“The best way to protect California, its values, the rights of our people, is to be prepared, so we won’t be flat-footed,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta, whose team has been working with advocacy organizations and attorneys general in other states on how they would answer another Trump administration. “We will fight as we did in the past if that scenario unfolds.”

During Trump’s first term, California sued more than 100 times over his rules and regulatory rollbacks. Bonta said his team has preemptively written briefs and tested arguments to challenge many of the policies they expect the former president to pursue over the next four years: passing a national abortion ban and restricting access to abortion medication; revoking California’s waiver to regulate its own automobile tailpipe emissions and overruling its commitment to transition to zero-emission vehicles; ending protections for immigrants brought to the country illegally as children; undermining the state’s extensive gun control laws, including for assault weapons, 3D-printed firearms and ghost guns; implementing voter identification requirements; and attacking civil rights for transgender youth.

“Unfortunately, it’s a long list,” Bonta told CalMatters days before the election. “We are and have been for months developing strategies for all of those things.” California takes on Trump

In many ways, California is more protected from swings in federal regulations than other states, because it has a robust regulatory framework of its own that often goes much further than the federal government.

Lorena Gonzalez, president of the California Labor Federation, said unions see an ongoing challenge to the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Board as a much bigger threat than any actions Trump might take. California law is already stronger than federal law on minimum wage, overtime pay and wage theft protections.

“He can’t do anything through the Department of Labor that would undo that,” she said.

But with Democrats in control of every state office and holding supermajorities in both chambers of the Legislature, Trump’s victory could completely upend policymaking in California.

“The best way to protect California, its values, the rights of our people, is to be prepared, so we won’t be flat-footed.”

-Attorney General Rob Bonta

During his first term, legislators focused on counteracting his federal agenda — though not always suc-

cessfully. California’s governors in that period, Newsom and Jerry Brown, took executive actions to limit the fallout of his rollback of environmental regulations, including launching a pollution-tracking satellite and negotiating with auto companies to maintain higher mileage standards.

Newsom’s office declined to discuss the stakes of the presidential election — although at a press conference last week, he said “no state has more to lose or gain in this election” than California. Nor did representatives make Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire

and state budget next year, available for interviews.

A return to open conflict is a worrisome prospect for the business community, which was often caught in the middle of federal and state rules during Trump’s first term — such as with a 2017 law that restricted employer participation in workplace immigration raids.

“Having the state react, it sort of puts things in limbo,”

said Jennifer Barrera, president and CEO of the California Chamber of Commerce. “When the two aren’t aligned, it creates some problems for our members that operate on the national level.”

How far will California go?

As Democrats look to protect California’s liberal values, there is concern they will resist Trump’s plans by going further in the opposite direction, in potentially counterproductive ways.

Federal regulations make only a marginal difference in the cost of housing in California, according to Dan Dunmoyer, president and CEO of the California Building Industry Association, but he fears the state’s response could unintentionally undermine its efforts to boost construction. In 2019, as the Trump administration narrowed federal water protections, California adopted even more expansive state regulations that developers complained made it more complicated and costly to get building permits.

“The anti-Trump factor is real,” Dumoyer said. “I expect that if Trump says the sky is blue, they’ll say it’s black today.”

Divided partisan control could also further gridlock Congress, setting up the nation’s largest state as the battleground for major policy fights, especially in areas that are not of interest to Trump.

Adam Kovacevich, founder and CEO of Chamber of Progress, a left-leaning tech industry association, said advocacy groups seeking more oversight of the industry have been very active in Washington, D.C., for the past four years and enjoyed a lot of success with the Biden administration. Under Trump, they will turn to California to lead the way on regulating artificial intelligence and children on social media, as well as enforcing antitrust law.

“Congress is an environment of legislative scarcity,” he said. “California is an environment of legislative abundance.”

Trump is also viewed by the tech industry as a wild card who might punish major companies that he believes opposed him, Kovacevich said. Such a contentious relationship could hurt their profits — and then California’s tax revenue.

“It’s tech industry success that plays a huge role in funding the state’s social safety net,” he said.

Immigrant community on the defensive

With Trump’s campaign heavily emphasizing tougher enforcement of the U.S.-Mexico border and mass deportations, California’s large immigrant community — millions of whom are undocumented — has been plunged into an especially uncertain and terrifying moment.

As Newsom put it last week, “the impacts from valley to valley, Silicon Valley to Central Valley, will be outsized” — particularly if Trump also revives his push to limit legal immigration, including by refugees, foreign workers and international students.

The California Immigrant Policy Center, an immigrant rights advocacy group, has already led 15 scenarioplanning exercises with hundreds of people from organizations across the state to prepare. “We know that the Trump administration is going to target California. They’ve been targeting California throughout this election cycle,” Masih Fouladi, executive director of the group, said. “We need to do a lot in California to make sure that we are defending, protecting our communities.”

Under Trump, Fouladi said, immigrant rights groups would lobby to make sure state and local resources are not used to detain and deport people and that non-citizen residents continue to have access to health care and other public services, which the state has significantly expanded over the past decade.

One likely priority is strengthening the California Values Act, the 2017 “sanctuary state” law that limited police cooperation with federal immigration authorities. After a contentious legislative battle, the version that passed was scaled back from what supporters originally envisioned, exempting people convicted of hundreds of more serious crimes from the protections and allowing state prison officials to continue handing over individuals facing deportation orders.

“What we hope for is to address the rights of the immigrant community in a humane way,” Fouladi said.

POST-ELECTION ANALYSIS: RURAL VOTER NUANCE IS DEEPLY ENTRENCHED

DonaldTrump's victory in the race for the White House was again aided by wins in rural states such as Nebraska.

While other contributing factors are discussed, a rural expert says it's clear longstanding political sentiments in smaller towns haven't changed. As the results from Tuesday night are examined, political analysts cite Trump's gain with Latino voters.

Nick Jacobs, assistant professor of government at Colby College is also an author who has written about rural issues, and says the campaign also regained some ground in rural America that it had lost in 2020. Jacobs said if the media or political strategists try again to understand why these areas still largely back Trump, they have to resist preconceived notions.

"We're going to see it again with these diner interviews - is that prior to even being interviewed [post-2016], rural people were put into this prefabricated box," he explained. "And the truth is, voters in rural places -- [like] urban places -they're complicated."

It's been decades in the making, but Jacobs feels the public still doesn't grasp that rural voters feel underappreciated by the

establishment. The trouble is, he added, this generally doesn't lend itself to policies that can directly appeal to them. He thinks Democrats should keep trying to produce local candidates who can relate to these voters, adding that having both parties find success in rural America is good for democracy.

Jacobs said his research, along with separate polling, has shown that rural and urban voters often agree on certain issues.

"Concerns about corporate monopolies, freedom within, sort of, the marketplace, whether that's for health care or reproductive rights -- there are very few policy issues that divide the two," he explained.

In Nebraska, voters this week rejected an abortion rights amendment and instead endorsed restrictions, even as reproductive rights saw victories in other conservative states. However, Nebraskans did approve paid sick-leave requirements, a policy often aligned with the Left.

The Biden administration's big policy achievements, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, have paved the way for a lot of rural in vestment. But Jacobs says many projects aren't shov el-ready yet, and aren't likely to move the needle with rural voters hesitant to embrace them.

"It can't be such a simple story as, 'Spend money and the votes will follow,' because what we're talking about [is] decades of feeling like 'the government has left me behind,'" he concluded.

DECLARED THE WINNER IN CA-16

Liccardo for Congres

SAN JOSE, CA — The Associated Press has called the race to succeed Congresswoman Anna Eshoo for former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, as has the Decision Desk, Washington Post, NBC News, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo has a commanding lead in the race; as of Wednesday November 6, 2024 at 5:30 pm, Liccardo led his opponent, Assemblymember Evan Low, by a margin of 19.8%, with Liccardo receiving 59.9% of the total votes counted.

Assemblymember Evan Low called Liccardo to congratulate him early this evening.

“While we await final results from the County Registrar,” Liccardo said, “I am working to put a strong team of congressional staff in place to serve our district at home and in D.C., because our community deserves a representative who can hit the ground running.” Liccardo continued, “I thank Evan Low for his well-wishes and congratulations earlier this evening, and I was also pleased to receive a message of congratulations and support from Congresswoman Anna Eshoo. I join our community in expressing our profound gratitude for her

three decades of leadership and service to our community.”

In offering his assessment of the campaign, Liccardo noted, “Over the past 11 months, we focused the dialogue in our campaign on solutions to the problems our communities face, from the high cost of living to homelessness, and I’m proud of the way that our community has responded to our substantive campaign, and honored by the strong support we’ve seen.”

During his campaign, Liccardo wrote a detailed 130-page “Let’s Get it Done” action plan to lower costs, build more affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and protect reproductive rights and other fundamental freedoms. To read more, click here.

The Democratic House leadership today called Liccardo to invite him to fly to Washington D.C., to meet with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his team to discuss committee assignments and to get an office set up.

EXPERTS ANALYZE WHY CA PROPOSITIONS ON MINIMUM WAGE , RENT CONTROL FAILED

Californiapolitical analysts say inflation and voter confusion contributed to the failure of propositions to raise the minimum wage and allow stronger rent control.

Proposition 33 would have allowed local governments to pass strict new rent-control ordinances.

Christian Grose, professor of political science and public policy at the University of Southern California's Dornsife College and Price School of Public Policy, said voters may have found the measure to be overly complex.

"We did some polling on this back in September, and we found a lot of people were undecided," Grose said. "I think it's a confusing initiative for a lot of voters, and so often when people aren't certain what the effects are going to be, they'll just vote no."

Opponents of Prop. 33 argued that more rent control would discourage construction of new rental units, thus thwarting attempts to increase the supply of housing.

Proposition 32 would

have raised the minimum wage to $18 an hour for companies that have 26 or more employees, and to $17 for smaller companies.

Grose called the defeat surprising, as California recently raised the minimum wage -- but only for fast-food workers.

"With inflation, there's some concerns about raising minimum wage will then lead to increased costs. So people who traditionally would support minimum wage maybe are opposed," he said.

Opponents of Prop. 32 warned it would have hurt California businesses and led to an increase in the cost of goods and services.

Keely O'Brien, policy advocate with the Western Center on Law and Poverty, said Prop. 32 would have helped the working poor at a time when poverty is the highest it has been in years.

"In early 2023, 31% of California residents were either poor or near poor, and nearly 76% of poor Californians lived in families with at least one working adult. So these are not, these are families who are working. They're often working really hard, and they're still not. They still don't have the resources that they need," O'Brien said.

EXPERTOS ANALIZAN POR QUÉ FRACASARON

LAS PROPUESTAS DE CA SOBRE SALARIO MÍNIMO Y CONTROL DE ALQUILERES

masiado compleja.
