INNEAPOLIS -- Last week's riots at the U.S. Capitol came on the heels of growing calls to help more people understand how democracy works and where to get reliable information. Some say it should start in the classroom. The halls of Congress were stormed by supporters of President Donald Trump, who continued to promote debunked claims the presidential election was stolen. Many Trump supporters don't view Joe Biden's win as legitimate, and the rioters sought to overturn the results, despite election authorities across the U.S. certifying the totals.

John Silva, senior director of education and training at the News Literacy Project, said it's not so much a failure of the education system, but rather political groups preying on people's fears to the point that reasonable thought is abandoned.

But Silva said it's not just about teaching students how to be critical thinkers when consuming information. He said for adults who have become isolated in the world of political tribalism, they've largely done so through social-media connections. He said their friends and loved ones can help them have more productive conversations in real life.

"And eventually, the things that they start to believe - those beliefs become, to them, factual truths," Silva said.

"To help them understand that they've been manipulated into believing things that aren't true," he said.

However, some watchdogs feel civics curriculum should be broadened to include lessons on how the political process affects marginalized residents. They say that could help foster greater respect for voters with different views.

Silva said while it might be hard for Trump opponents to have empathy for his supporters, given some of their actions and rhetoric, it's John Silva, director senior de educación y capacitimportant to keep the lines of communication ación del News Literacy Project, dijo que no se trata open.

Tellingly, a growing number of conservative legislators and senators are convinced that Donald Trump is a harmful element within the Republican party, some of whom agree that the real estate mogul should be barred from seeking another popularly elected position for life.

ith a bipartisan vote, Donald Trump this week became the only president in the history of the United States to be the subject of a political impeachment trial on two occasions, following a vote in the House of Representatives where he was accused of inciting to the insurrection.

Regardless of the final result, since his trial is still pending in the United States Senate, the decision of the House of Representatives sends a very clear message: no one is Para más información visita www.lar- above the law and anyone who edhispana.com. seeks to violate the democratic or-

It turned out that the leader of the Republicans in the Upper House, Senator from Kentucky, Mitch McConnell, is in favor of the impeachment trial, as the most expeditious mechanism to achieve Trump's marginalization from the Republican party. But the reality is that Trump continues to enjoy considerable support from Republicans. At least 197 representatives of that party voted against the impeachment trial, which illustrates the level of influence that Trump still has over the Republican apparatus and the weight that he can have in US politics in the coming years. For now, no one will be able to take away from Trump the dubious honor of being the first president to be tried twice, first for having invited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, in the 2020 presidential elections, and now, for inciting an insurrection to starting with the lying accusation that President-elect Joel Biden was elected on November 3 thanks to massive electoral fraud. In addition to his followers' illegal foray into congress on January 6th, there is mounting evidence that the regrettable episode of the desecration of congress was part of a larger plan by extremist groups to ignore the popular will.

ARSON CITY, Nev. -- Although the directive to suspend student-loan payments and waive interest is set to expire at the end of the month, Biden transition officials have promised the new administration will extend it. More than 10% of Nevadans have student-loan debt, and more than half of the state's respondents to a recent survey said they don't know when they'll be financially secure enough to start making loan payments again. Another 30% said they won't be ready until June of 2021 or later. Cody Hounanian, program director at the group Student Debt Crisis, said the extension of the pause on payments is critical, but so is further action for

broad-based debt cancellation. "The burden of student debt is something that is growing exponentially as people are facing unemployment, or reduced hours, or extra medical costs during this pandemic," Hounanian said. More than 20% of Nevada borrowers who responded reported their financial wellness was poor or very poor. Now, during the pandemic, that number has increased to more than 55%. Hounanian said with the new makeup of the U.S. Senate, he expects to see certain changes, such as a fix to publicservice loan-forgiveness programs, an end to the bankruptcy-law provision that places a higher bar to discharge student-loan debt, and even refinancing reforms for federal student loans. He said organizations, lawmakers and experts want to implement these fixes, as well as go further - provide permanent debt cancellation for as many people as possible. "For those that are listening that feel that their lawmakers have not been listening to them in relation to the student-debt crisis, now is the time. And I'm feeling very optimistic that change is just right around the corner," he said. Borrowers in the U.S. owe roughly $1.6 trillion in student debt - more than all of the nation's credit-card debt combined. Hounanian said if someone's not being crushed by student debt themselves, they almost certainly know someone who is, and that's why the chorus of advocates is growing.

ospitalizations from COVID-19 infections in California have risen dramatically in the past 14 days, even prior to the expected post-holiday surge. COVID infections in California have increased 5.5 percent over the past 14 days: 21,747 people have been hospitalized, and 4,854 people are currently in intensive care units, said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of California’s Health and Human Services department at a briefing Jan. 12. The state that day crossed a grim milestone of 30,000 COVID-related deaths. Ghaly said he was optimistic about the numbers: “There is some hope here,” he said, noting that the numbers were lower than expected. But he cautioned that a post-holiday surge has yet to hit, and expects that the state will start to see the ramifications of holiday gatherings beginning Jan. 15. Almost all counties in the state are in the high “purple tier,” which indicates widespread levels of infection. Only Trinity County has moved from purple to red, while Humboldt County has backtracked from red to purple. The focus of the state’s strategy has been Southern California, where hospitals have been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the crisis and currently have no ICU capacity. Trucks are being used as makeshift morgues, and ambulance traffic is being diverted to hospitals further away which may have greater capacity. Low-risk patients are being discharged to facilities with lower levels of care, which is appropriate, said Ghaly. California currently has 2.5 million doses of the COVID vaccine and has a goal of administering 1 million more shots by this weekend, Jan. 17. Approximately 784,000 people in the state have already received at least one dose of the vaccine, and more than 99,000 people in the state have received the second required dose. California has planned mass vaccination sites at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, Petco

Park in San Diego, CalExpo in Sacramento, and Disneyland in Anaheim. “We want to vaccinate people as soon as we can, and not just keep doses in the freezer,” said Ghaly. He said extra doses would be given to people lower in the tier so that they are not wasted. State health officials were expected to meet with federal health officials Jan. 12 to adjust guidelines for vaccine distribution, given a ramp-up in production with more doses expected to soon become available.

ore Americans are investing their time and energy in the pursuit of fitness these days, with the percentage of people belonging to gyms and health clubs nearly doubling from 2000-2017, according to Statista. Beyond casual workouts, participation in extreme sports and endurance events has grown exponentially in the past 25 years. Whether you’ve recently started exercising, are ramping up your efforts or have always been an avid sports enthusiast, you’ve probably dealt with soreness and fatigue after a tough workout. While rest days are critical for athletes and exercisers of all levels, no one wants to be sidelined for too long and lose their momentum. To turbocharge your recovery process and get back into the game faster, consider these techniques: • Complete a dynamic warm-up: Before physical activity, perform a dynamic warmup to wake up muscles and get oxygen and blood flowing. Take your body through its full range of motion with effective moves, including high knees, butt kicks, forward and sideways leg swings and shoulder rolls. • Consider CBD: With a similar molecular structure to the naturally occurring endocannabinoids produced by the human body, cannabidiol (CBD) sports supplements can assist with your preparation, performance, and recovery, according to research. Check out the hemp-derived, customformulated supplements from Champions + Legends, which offers a portfolio of products used by some of the world’s most elite athletes to help keep them training, performing and recovering at a high level, including James Harrison, a two-time Super Bowl champion, Hafþór “Thor” Júlíus Björnsson Gregor, an Icelandic strongman, deadlift world record holder, and “Game of

Thrones” actor, rock climbers, Adam Ondra and Tommy Caldwell, CrossFit athletes, Sara Sigmundsdóttir and Pat Vellner, and Jay Glazer, football insider and MMA trainer. “There is a big difference between just taking the day off and consciously recovering,” says Sonny Mottahed, founder and CEO of Champions + Legends. “Better recovery means you can train harder next time.” To learn more, visit ChampionsandLegends.com. • Know your limits: While strength and endurance gains can only happen if you push your limits, it’s important to remember that improving athletic performance is a gradual process. Be mindful of your current strength, endurance and flexibility and learn to distinguish between normal soreness and discomfort, and pain that could be a sign it’s time to slow down or take a break. • Cross-train: The same type of exercise day in and day out can make you more susceptible to physical and mental burnout. Crosstraining will not only give you an edge in your main sport, it can also help you recover faster. • Foam roll: You don’t need a big budget or much time to receive the positive benefits of a deep tissue massage. Give yourself the spa treatment at home. Post workout, foam roll to reduce tension of large muscle groups and targeted areas. The harder the foam roller’s density, the deeper into muscle tissue you can go. You may find it helpful to have multiple rollers to choose from, depending on the muscle area and your level of soreness that day. • Refuel rapidly: Good nutrition is essential for swift recovery. Be sure to refuel quickly after tough workouts to aid muscle repair. You only have one body, so treat it well. Seek out the tools and knowledge you need to fully recover, faster.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California has just changed its tier system to speed COVID-19 vaccinations for older people. The first tier of Phase One included people in nursing homes and front-line workers. Tier 1B has been expanded to include people age 65 and older, plus those who work in education, childcare, emergency services, and food and agriculture. Fred Buzo, associate state director for AARP Califor-

nia, commended the state for prioritizing older adults. "Since the start of the pandemic, nearly 95% of the deaths from COVID-19 have been among people who were 50 and over," Buzo confirmed. The state issues guidelines on each tier, but each county decides how to allocate them depending on the amount of vaccine they've received and the need in that area. People should check with their own health-care provider and county to determine when they will be eligible to receive a vaccination. Buzo noted AARP's web-

site now features a California Vaccine Distribution Guide. It's an online hub for COVID information, and a series of tele-town halls about the virus. "Things are changing so quickly, so we are updating it very quickly," Buzo explained. "So, you need to check back frequently." He added people should be on the lookout for vaccine-related scams. In Santa Clara County, for example, Buzo indicated quite a few people have received fraudulent text messages telling them appointments are available "due to an excess of vaccine," when that is not the case.

t’s undeniable that climate change has been affecting and continues to threaten the winter sports and tourism industries. Colder regions around the world are experiencing a steady decline in snowfall and snowy months. In the classic tale of Frosty the Snowman, Frosty promises to come back next winter when the cold returns. But as global average temperatures continue to climb, will Frosty keep coming back? The SNOTEL network has kept detailed records of snow at high elevations since the 1960s. Based on their data, scientists have determined a 10-20 percent average loss in the annual maximum snow water equivalent (the amount of water stored in snow packs) during that time because of global warming. They have also recorded a one-to-two-week loss in days with snow cover in these regions since the 1970s. “Warmer winter temperatures also affect the characteristics of accumulated snow on the ground, including snow depth, how long the snow stays on the ground, and snow ‘slushiness,’” reports the group Protecting Our Winters (POW) in a report produced in conjunction with gear retailer Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). Of course, more slushiness and less powder are not ideal for winter sports enthusiasts. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding or just rolling around in the snow, there are many of activities that rely on the cold. One study found that 20 million Americans participate in winter sports annually, generating $20.3 billion dollars in the winter sports tourism industry. This industry supports over 191,000 jobs. So, what’s the industry doing to address

these changes? The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has taken on global warming via its Climate Challenge program. promoting education around global climate change, creating more sustainable slopes, and furthering outdoor business climate partnerships. Winter sports athletes have also been advocating for climate action. Before the 2014 Winter Olympics, 75 decorated Olympic skiing and snowboarding medalists wrote to President Obama calling for more ambitious action on climate change; they continue to advocate for climate action to this day. Additionally, “sustainability” was recently announced as one of the three pillars of Olympic Agenda 2020. Last but not least, Protect Our Winters (POW) has been a huge player in pushing for climate action. “We find things in deep winter or at high altitude elevations that we don’t find anywhere else, that speak very directly to our connection to nature and to the human soul...” POW’ executive director, Mario Molina, tells Yale Climate Connections. POW rallies athletes, scientists, business leaders and others to advocate for policies that protect climate and has resources for advocacy, education, donating and volunteering. s innegable que el cambio climático ha estado afectando y sigue amenazando a las industrias de los deportes de invierno y el turismo.

ELENA, Mont. -- People across the country were shocked by the crowd that forced its way into the U.S. Capitol on the first Wednesday of the year.

But followers of the far-right movement say there were warning signs leading up to the attack. Travis McAdam, program director for combating white nationalism and defending democracy at the Montana Human Rights Network, said far-right groups have been mobilizing in protest of COVID-19 safety measures. "A lot of times in those crowds, you had these armed contingents of militia members and other anti-government groups, and that started out pretty early on in the pandemic," McAdam explained.

HOENIX -- The attack on the U.S. Capitol last week has shocked and angered many Americans, but some in Arizona see its roots in the extreme rhetoric of past state leaders. Sandra Solis is a community organizer with Arizona's Puente Human Rights Movement. She said before President Donald Trump stirred up anti-immigrant fervor, there was Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Minutemen, a vigilante group that patrolled the border. "We've seen how these elected officials can actually cause more political tensions and cause more violence in our communities and that their actions do have a bigger ripple and do have a bigger consequence in our communities," Solis said. Some of the rioters at the U.S. Capitol have been identified as Arizonans and arrested since the attack. On Monday, five Arizona members of Congress, all of them Democrats, signed on to impeach Donald Trump for a second time for his role in inciting the violence in Washington, D.C. Solis said her organization's office is across from the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix, where about 1,000 protesters gathered last Wednesday. She said some were armed with rifles, raising fears about more violence. There are concerns stemming from social media that armed marches could take place in state capitals across the country this weekend. "We saw that individuals are going to try to copy and paste that blueprint into their local government, and what does that exactly mean for the safety and the

politics of our community?" She said. Solis hopes the attack in Washington, D.C. will draw more attention to mending the growing divide in this country. "We've all been able to really have a wake-up call. And I think the biggest thing is really just shining a light that we need to come back to a place where we have a more humane approach to settling our differences," she said.

Dijo ella.

oogle employees are forming the Alphabet Workers Union, both to push their parent company toward greater social responsibility and to ensure workers are treated fairly. It's a rare occurrence in the technology industry, but Andrew Gainer-Dewar, a software engineer at Google and a founding member of the union, said Alphabet workers have a history of workplace activism. In 2018, more than 20,000 Google employees staged a walkout over the parent company's handling of issues of sexual harassment. And just last month, roughly 2,000 Google employees signed a letter requesting transparency about the exit of Dr. Timnit Gebru from the company. She's an AI researcher who criticized Alphabet's lack of diversity. "We want to see Alphabet's leadership move towards more accountability," Gainer-Dewar said. "We want to see them take responsibility for what we've built and for its potential to both do really amazing things for people, but also to provide a space where really horrible things can spread and grow." Gainer-Dewar said the power of YouTube, an Alphabet subsidiary, was on display last week when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, many after seeing videos on Youtube or other social media platforms. He said there's a sense among members that Alphabet has ample power, but is no longer accountable

to what their workers want. Gainer-Dewar said when it comes to workers rights, one of the main focuses will be the twotiered system of hiring. He said there are full-time employees with long-term contracts, good pay and benefits, while others work as contractors or through vendor companies - with worse benefits, pay and working conditions - and often do essentially the same work full-time employees do. "They have these kind of precarious contracts that can be taken away from them at any time, or are just set to terminate on some fixed term right from the beginning," he said.

The Alphabet Workers Union, which is affiliated with the Communication Workers of America Local 1400, had more than 200 members upon launching last week. It has since grown to more than 600.

TAKE EO WITH YOU ANYWHERE... ANYTIME.
