Biden's silent message, ratified in his speech after assuming the presidency at noon on January 20, was crystal clear; Only in unity is it possible to overcome the great national challenges: the pandemic, the economic crisis, and the threat of domestic extremism. But the transition also revealed that it will not be easy to dismantle the legacy of the Trump era. The wall of the city of Washington and the display of armored glass on both the Lincoln Memorial and on Capitol Hill, a powerful reminder of the division of the country. It is a fact that Biden welcomes the most divided country since the Civil War, a word that is worryingly increasingly found in the vocabulary of right-wing militant groups that continue to believe that Trump is the legitimate president and Biden is a usurper. But the task of unifying the country does not only correspond to the political class but to society as a whole. The 200,000 flags that flew over the National Mall remind us that only united can we defeat the pandemic. Hence, Biden's request that we ALL put on our masks in the next 100 days makes sense. We must do it out of common sense, but also out of respect for others. The images of the presidential inauguration may end up being the mirage of a short-lived honeymoon. On more than one occasion, personal or group political interests have prevailed over the national interest. But Biden's gestures suggest that he is willing to invest the necessary political capital and bet on the beginning of an era of reconciliation, as the symbols materialize in policies that fill the gaps of inequality that have deepened for many in the wake of the pandemic, including comprehensive immigration reform that our essential and anonymous heroes deserve. Estimated to affect one in 10 older adults and cost billions annually, the threat of elder financial fraud is pervasive, and especially so right now. With seniors more isolated than ever due to the pandemic and stimulus checks being sent to millions of Americans nationwide, experts suggest that seniors and their families be extra vigilant. “Scammers look for key time periods where money and private financial information are in motion. Not only is IRS fraud one of the most common and successful types of scams that exists, as a general rule, additional money equates to additional fraud,” says Ron Long, head of Aging Client Services at Wells Fargo. “Scammers are banking on the fact that many seniors are apart from families and friends due to COVID-19. When someone is alone, physically or socially, they often miss out on the added benefit of a second pair of eyes and ears.” Compounding the risks associated with isolation is the number of seniors who feel their chances of falling victim to a financial scam is unlikely. According to a recent Wells Fargo study conducted by The Harris Poll, 69 percent of all seniors age 60 and above believe they’re not likely to be susceptible to a financial scam, despite nearly all seniors (97 percent) acknowledging that older people are very or somewhat susceptible to becoming a victim. When asked about their peers, the poll found that 47 percent of all seniors knew someone who had already fallen victim to a scam. “The results indicate what most of us want -- the ability to age relatively unaffected from the realities associated with aging,” says Dr. Marti DeLiema, a gerontologist and consultant for Wells Fargo’s Aging Client Services. “The problem is that when someone doesn’t

feel they’re at risk, they’re unlikely to take precaution.” To better protect seniors from elder financial fraud and abuse, consider these tips from Wells Fargo: 1. Don’t wait for a crisis. Seniors should speak with trustworthy family members about financial plans, as well as consult them when something doesn’t feel right. 2. Stay up-to-date. Seniors and families should draft and periodically update legal documents such as wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney.

The Georgetown analysis found that 42% of households with annual incomes under $25,000 are canceling their postsecondary plans, but in households with incomes of more than $200,000, only 19% are canceling. "The fact that we're seeing lower-income students completely canceling or being more likely to interrupt their collegegoing presents the risk that the college attainment gap is going to increase between higher-income and lower-income students," she said. Fasules said she thinks the country needs to ensure everyone has access to higher education - during the pandemic and beyond. "It's becoming more and more apparent," she said, "that we need to provide students support, more so than ever, even if it's support for remote learning - that they still have the ability to go to college or pursue a postsecondary education, safely and financially."

EW YORK—On a recent Monday, Maribel Lapuz got up at 4:30 a.m. The 46-year-old immigrant from the Philippines braved the sub-zero weather and took the train from Jersey City, NJ to a nursing home in Brooklyn, NY, where she has worked six days a week as a caregiver since last February. A thousand miles away, Mario Ramirez drove from one house to another starting at 5:00 a.m. doing construction and plumbing work in Marietta, Georgia. Ramirez, a 52-year-old Mexican immigrant, has never missed a working day since the start of the pandemic. “When the Trump administration sent the $1,200 stimulus checks to workers,” Lapuz said, “I didn’t get it; I was ignored.” “Someone like me in this country is not eligible for unemployment,” Ramirez said. “That means I can’t stop working in order to support my family, despite the risk of COVID-19.” Their situations may soon change. Deemed “essential workers” by the federal government, Lapuz and Ramirez are among the 5 million undocumented immigrants who may be rewarded a path to citizenship—and it could happen during the first days

Indispensable to American life and economy, undocumented essential workers are now at the core of an immigration plan currently being drafted by congressional Demo-crats and immigrant rights advocates, and aggressively promoted by the incoming ad-ministration.

Some immigration advocates and scholars also question whether the upcoming immi-gration plan is the right approach. If the Biden-Harris administration proposes to extend legalization opportunities to 5 million undocumented essential workers, what about the other 8 million undocumented immigrants?

The new immigration legislation—folded into the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill that Biden unveiled last week— will include granting undocumented essential workers a green card and decreasing the wait time to obtain U.S. citizenship. “Essential workers, many of whom are undocumented immigrants, are unsung Ameri-can heroes—risking their lives during this deadly pandemic to care for our communi-ties and ensure food is on the table,” Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) said in a recent virtual press conference. “I’m working on legislation to immediately protect essential workers and their families from deportation and provide them with a fast-track path to citizenship.” Vice President-elect Kamala Harris weighed in publicly on the issue. Speaking last week with Spanish-language Univision, she said the incoming administration would automatically grant green cards not only to undocumented essential workers but also to DACA

HICAGO -- A little more than a year after Illinois became the eleventh state to legalize recreational cannabis, legalaid groups are working to help residents get past cannabis convictions expunged through a state-funded program called the New Leaf Initiative. Gray Mateo-Harris, a board member of the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation, said criminal records can prevent people from getting certain types of jobs, financial aid for education and even housing. She reported 700,000 cannabis convictions are eligible to be expunged. "Even though it is simply a conviction or an arrest that was likely dealt with a long time ago, still they're living and reliving the consequences of that arrest or condition for the entirety of their lives," Mateo-Harris explained. Funding for the New Leaf Initiative comes from a tax on the sale of cannabis. MateoHarris contended it's a restorative step because Black communities and other communities of color have been overcriminalized in cannabis arrests and convictions. Mateo-Harris noted Illinois is unique in having social-justice measures built into its legalization law. "We understood as a state that there needed to be funds and specific earmarked provisions that would allow for some of the profit from what has become certainly nearing a billion-dollar industry to really flow back into those communities that were so heavily impacted," Mateo-Harris remarked. Andrew Sharp, content director for Illinois Legal Aid Online, which launched an online portal to provide information on the initiative, said resources are grouped into categories: minor cannabis arrests, minor cannabis convictions and other convictions. Part of the portal's job is to help figure out which group someone is in.

"And then educate them on what that process looks like, whether it's automatic, pseudo-automatic or not automatic at all, and how they can take steps to get the relief that they need," Sharp outlined. He confirmed there will be free services available to qualifying low-income Illinoisans, and explained the goal is to make sure all residents have equal opportunity to work, learn and live.

s the COVID-19 pandemic death toll passed 400,000 in the United States, three Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials joined in a “virtual town hall” telebriefing to describe the county’s expansion of its vaccination program and address community concerns. The virtual town hall, moderated by Dr. Hector Flores, chairman of the department of family medicine at White Memorial Medical Center, occurred on the first day of the county’s new program to make vaccines available to people as young as 65. It also coincided with opening of five new, large-scale vaccination sites, which can each potentially administer about 4,000 vaccinations per day. The best way to make an appointment for a vaccine, the doctors said, is via the website vaccinatelacounty.com, but appointments can also be made by phone, at (833) 540-0473, between 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.. A key complaint among those attending the town hall was the difficulties in getting through to make appointments. “Please bear with us,” said Dr. Seira Kurian, director of the DPH’s medical affairs division. “We’ve had really huge call volume and number of hits on the web site. Simon pointed out, for instance, that despite fears of anaphylaxis – an allergic reaction – to the vaccines, out of 2 million vaccine doses administered so far, there have been 21 cases of anaphylaxis, none of them fatal. It also seems that the vaccines already available work against the new, more-contagious strains of the virus that have emerged in recent weeks and Simon also said that the vaccinations have not been found to endanger pregnancies and are equally effective across racial and ethnic lines. The two vaccines currently available, made by the pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna, require two doses. The second Pfizer shot should be taken 28 days after the initial one. For the Moderna vaccine, a second shot can be taken in 21 days. So far, the county has administered 77,000 second doses, along with almost 300,000 initial ones. "I think if industry was really doing what it could to keep their employees and the people in the communities that they are operating in safe, they wouldn't be bringing in hundreds or thousands of people to live in very close quarters," Furlong asserted. "It's the exact opposite of what should be happening during a pandemic." A TC Energy spokesperson responded by email, saying the safety of its crews and the public are core company values. Furlong noted one challenge protecting tribes from outbreaks at transient work camps is that official COVID case counts are recorded in a workers' home state, not in the county where they are working.

unters do play a large part in conservation efforts across the U.S. through their taxes, licenses and donations. In fact, the National Wildlife Refuge System itself was founded by a hunter: President Theodore Roosevelt. That being said, the mere act of hunting alone is not conservation. While one can conserve an animal’s pelt, meat, or the memory of that animal, shooting and killing an animal, of course, does not mean that it has been conserved. However, hunters take action outside of hunting in order to maintain the species’ health, environments and numbers in which they hunt. In this regard, not all hunters are conservationists, but many become conservationists through hunting. Most of the U.S. government’s funding for conservation comes from hunters. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service raises money for wetland habitat protection through its program called “Duck Stamps.” Federal Duck Stamps are required to be purchased by all waterfowl hunters, but they can also be bought by anyone who would like to contribute to conservation. Since their creation in 1934, Duck Stamps have helped conserve nearly six million acres of habitat. They also serve as a free pass into any national wildlife refuge that charges an entry fee. Additionally, according to the Rocket Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), hunters pay $796 million a year towards conservation programs through their state licenses and fees. RMEF is largely made up of hunters, and along with other similar groups, they estimate that they have added around $440 million a year to conservation efforts. Another federal tax on guns, ammo, bows and arrows generates $371 million a year towards conservation. A survey conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service showed that the percent-

age of Americans who hunt has halved over the past 50 years, and that the decline continues to accelerate. Because hunters provide much of the funding to government conservation programs, the decreasing popularity of the pastime is taking a toll on efforts by state and federal agencies to implement wildlife habitat restoration plans and related activities for the benefit of wildlife. There are some who see this decline in hunting as a positive. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), for example, published a detailed article citing the main reasons why they believe sport hunting is cruel and unnecessary. They point out that a substantial percentage of animals hunted are shot but not killed causing an unnecessary amount of pain and suffering. Additionally, they argue that while natural predators maintain the balance of an ecosystem by killing the sickest and weakest individuals, sport hunters often try to aim for large, healthy animals for better bragging rights. It is undeniable that hunters contribute to conservation efforts, but the sport and act of hunting itself has proven to be a controversial subject for many.
