Applications Now Available for 2013 SCC GOV 101 ACADEMY 10-Week Program to Engage Residents with First-Hand Look at County Programs and Services SANTA CLARA COUNTY Applications are now available for the SCC GOV 101 ACADEMY, a 10-week program to provide a comprehensive overview of County government, its role and responsibilities, as well as the program and services offered by the County. The inaugural course was held last spring. “It is quite heartening to see how many people are truly interested in learning about our County government,” said President Ken Yeager, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “The programs and services provided by the County affect the lives of everyone, but often they go unnoticed.”
The Academy will hold its first session on March 12. Applications will be accepted until February 15. The 35 seats will be distributed across the county. Seven will be available in each of the five Supervisorial Districts. Most sessions will occur on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. One halfday session will take place on a Saturday. The graduation ceremony is planned for the Board of Supervisors meeting on May 21, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. The goals of the program are to: Raise public awareness of County roles and services; promote engagement and understanding of
the County; encourage participation in advisory commissions and volunteer opportunities; and contribute to creating a more informed public. “I would encourage those interested to submit their applications early, since last year there were more candidates than spaces available,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith. “We received excellent feedback from Academy participants about the interactive curriculum and the opportunities to visit several facilities to see first-hand how their tax dollars are spent.”
Man Sentenced for Growing Marijuana in Cosumnes Wildlife Preserve A Vallejo man was sentenced to two years and four months in jail for growing marijuana on public land. On Aug. 4, 2012, California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) officers located 19 separate growing locations with a total of approximately 2,000 marijuana plants in the Cosumnes River Ecological Preserve. Oscar Javier Palomino Ocegueda, 29, was located inside the growing area and armed with a shotgun. He was taken into custody without incident. Ocegueda later pleaded no contest to felony marijuana cultivation charges and guilty to felony pollution charges. He was
sentenced earlier this month in Sacramento County Superior Court. Cleanup of the area required the removal of camping related and personal items, three generators, steel carts, gardening tools, two propane tanks and approximately 50 gallons of gasoline, 100 pounds of fertilizer, 200 bottles of water, 500 feet of electrical cord and 2,000 feet of plastic gardening pipe. Nine separate 400500 pound helicopter loads were required to remove the material from the reserve. Three firearms were located, resulting in the recovery of a firearm that had been reported stolen in 2008. The

wildlife officers received assistance from the Sacramento and San Joaquin County sheriff ’s departments, Galt Police Department and the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The Cosumnes River Ecological Preserve encompasses, and protects, thousands of acres of wetlands that foster the growth of native vegetation and the wildlife dependent on those habitats. More than 250 bird species, 40 fish species, and 230 plant species have been identified on the Reserve. The Cosumnes River Preserve is recognized as one of California’s most significant natural areas.
Guidance on How Mobile Apps Can Better Protect Consumer Privacy SAN FRANCISCO Attorney General Kamala D. Harris issued recommendations for mobile application (app) developers, and the mobile industry, to safeguard consumer privacy. Today’s report provides guidance on developing strong privacy practices, translating these practices into mobilefriendly policies, and coordinating with mobile industry actors to promote comprehensive transparency. “Californians want to know what personal information their apps collect, how it is used and with whom it is shared,” said Attorney General Harris. “To meet this need and keep pace with rapidly changing technology, these recommendations strike a responsible balance between protecting consumers’ personal information and fostering the continued growth of the innovative app economy.” Today’s report, Privacy on the Go: Recommendations for the Mobile Ecosystem, is the result of an outreach effort that compiled input from stakeholders through-
out the mobile industry. Its purpose is to serve as a template for the mobile industry to develop mobile-friendly privacy policies and practices that will improve consumer privacy without stifling innovation. To accommodate the smaller screens of mobile devices, the report recommends the use of special notifications such as icons, or pop-up notifications to inform consumers about how personally identifiable information is being collected and shared. The issue of mobile privacy is increasingly pressing as more than half of American adult cell phone owners access the Internet from their phones, and more than 1,600 mobile apps are released every day. To protect consumers’ online privacy, Attorney General Harris forged an agreement among the seven leading mobile and social app platforms in 2012. The agreement – with Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Research in Motion – involved displaying app privacy policies that users could find in a consistent location in the

platform store and review before downloading an app. In October 2012, the Attorney General sent letters to approximately 100 mobile app developers and companies that were not in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act and gave 30 days to post a conspicuous privacy policy. In December, the Attorney General filed the first legal action against Delta Airlines, Inc. for violating California’s online privacy law, which requires apps that collect personally identifiable information to conspicuously post a privacy policy. Last year, Attorney General Harris also established the Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit to enforce federal and state privacy laws regulating the collection, retention, disclosure, and destruction of private or sensitive information by individuals, organizations, and the government. This includes California’s Online Privacy Protection Act, as well as laws relating to cyber privacy, health and financial privacy, identity theft, government records and data breaches.

OUR JOURNEY REQUIRES US ALL TOGETHER
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR
President Barack H. Obama, after taking the oath of office for the second time, delivered a comprehensive listing of the many challenges which our nation faces today. The delivery was made in an assertive tone directed to all present at the public inauguration held last Monday, January 21, 2013. In addition to the many legislative challenges already known to most of us, President Obama included global warming and gay/lesbian marriage rights to the many issues. Every liberal issue was mentioned. No issues were overlooked. In particular, mention was made of retaining social security, Medicare, Medicaid, education and addressing immigration reform. The most important three words repeated several times were “We the People”. The President was reminding America that the people elected him. He was going to be assertive in addressing the many issues which need to be “acted upon in our time” by Congress. While we can focus limited attention and action on each issue, President Obama was asking American citizens to become more engaged in letting their congressional representative know that their actions were being monitored. ‘Ask them how they voted? And why? The President was asking the American citizen (We, The People) to keep reminding the current elected officials that ‘We the People’ voted them into office to deal with the people’s concerns, which requires congressional action ‘in our time’.
The President indicated that social security and Medicare/Medicaid will continue because ‘We the People’ have a commitment to each other. This nation cares for those who need assistance. He asserted that budget adjustments would not be made on the backs of those who are already disadvantaged and needy. In this address, the President made effective statements that all need to support governmental programs. Citizens must tell their congressional representative that a comprehensive adjustment of taxes must be made. This adjustment of tax codes and entitlements will be very essential if a resurgence of the middle class is to occur. What are the priorities supported by Hispanics? Foremost is the need to have a job. Many jobs could be made available quickly by approval of funding for national infrastructures which have been neglected for too long. A second priority addresses the disparities in education which currently do not provide low income communities with the same resource level as those of well-to-do communities. Another high priority is the enactment of comprehensive immigration legislation, which brings out of the shadows of our society all those millions of undocumented immigrants already residents here in America. ‘Our journey is not complete’ was a phrase used by President Obama to let all know that though progress has been made, more is needed. President Obama summarized historical adjustments already made: Slavery no longer exists; Women now have the right to vote, and gay/lesbian individuals shall have the right
to marry. Progress is needed in so many areas that it requires residents to convey their preferences to their elected representative. These acts are required to achieve ‘governance by, of, and for the people’. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal’ is a historical tenant embedded in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution by our Founding Fathers. If this statement is to continue to have meaning we must change. The changes needed are to begin to provide access to the American Dream. All must have access to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’. If only a few achieve, then the rest of us are denied. How can this be achieved? All residents must communicate their expectations to elected officials who must be held accountable and responsible. In today’s environment of very fast effective communication, it is possible to send messages which inform elected officials that now is the time for them to be reasonable, to negotiate and to compromise in all matters, so that the business of ‘We the People’ is addressed first. The fallout of a system of law and order which treats us all equitably is a commerce that thrives. When all pay a fair share of taxes, our governance will happen without deficits. The distribution of goods and services to all who need supportive relief will be possible. America has the material and spiritual resources to enable life in a secure and peaceful national community. Our journey there is ‘a work in progress’, now over 200 years old. Our journey requires us all together.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream
Resource to Provide Library Users Guidelines to Start their Own Investment Club Santa Clara County Library District card holders now have direct access to “Investment Club Starter Kits,” a new resource based on the successful workshop presented last year at several District libraries by members of the Silicon Valley Chapter of Better Investing.
Four Solar Suitcases will be sent to orphanages in Africa to serve as viable power sources.
Martin Luther King Jr.Day was held on this past Monday, and many throughout the country honored his legacy by dedicating some of their time helping others. At the Tech Museum in San Jose, nearly 50 Bay Area students and their families came together to build “solar suitcases”, which would then be sent to Sierra Leone, where the life-changing kits will bring light to desperately poor West African schools. “The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, hundreds of thousands of people across the nation are continuing King’s legacy of service through similarly good deeds,” said Roqua Montez Director Public Relations at the Tech Museum, “The purpose of the event is to inspire youth to see how they can have a positive impact on the world through technology.” Middle and high school students and their families spent the day in the newly
opened “The Tech Studio” learning about solar power engineering before wiring and configuring the portable solar power systems. The kits will be donated to schools that have no electricity in Sierra Leone through the non-profit Schools for Salone. “The students range in age from 11 to 17 years old and they are a diverse group of boys and girls from across the Bay Area.” Montez said. “The suitcases - four in total - will be shipped to two schools and two orphanages in Uganda and Sierra Leone in the next month.” “The Tech has partnered with “We Share Solar” to present this project, and the suitcases were generously funded by Applied Materials,” Montez added. The We Share Solar Suitcase is an easy-to-use, easyto-transport, and complete solar electric system. Increased energy efficiency in lights makes it possible to illuminate a classroom with only 15 watts of electricity.
The kit includes a battery, a 20-watt solar panel, a charge controller, switches and wiring. The kit can be expanded to provide up to 200 watts of solar power. We Share Solar is a project of WE CARE Solar, a Berkeley non-profit whose Stachel, a gynecologist, was on a trip to Africa to investigate why women were having trouble delivering their babies. What she found was that most of the hospitals in Africa did not have the proper energy sources needed when a woman was giving birth. From this experience came the idea for the solar suitcases. Founders, Aronson and Laura Stachel are 2011 The Tech Awards laureates. Dedicated to improving maternal health care in the developing world, WE CARE Solar has deployed more than 200 solar suitcases around the world.

a sufrir pérdidas a corto plazo.

Nutrition Tips for Seniors On-the-Go
(STATEPOINT)
Claudia M. González M.S. R.D.

Today’s seniors are leading active lives, filling their time with travel and new experiences. While staying active is great for one‚ general well-being and happiness, continuous travel provides many challenges to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Good nutrition and regular exercise can keep you feeling great and reduce your risk for diseases such as prostate cancer, diabetes and hypertension. And, as we age, our risk for developing these diseases increases, so it is especially vital for aging men and women to protect their overall health. Next time you take a trip, don’t let your health go on vacation too. Here are some wellness tips that will travel as well as your wrinkle-free shirts: Maybe it’s all that waiting, but something about airports makes people hungrier. Packing food may be your best bet for a wholesome meal. If you do buy airport food, you may want to couple it with a little exercise. Explore the terminal options before settling on the first fast food joint you see.
Salads, low-fat sandwiches and smoothies abound these days. And instead of snacking on high-sodium pretzels or crackers on your flight, opt for an immunity-boosting piece of fruit instead.
vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. After the salad, stick with grilled, lean meats and whole grains. Keep the amount of fat you get from red meat and dairy products to a minimum.
On road trips, pack a cooler filled with fresh vegetables, homemade sandwiches and water. If you do stop along the way, try and wait until you can find a rest stop with plenty of healthy food choices.
When you‚‘re cooking for yourself, you know exactly what’s in your food. Don’t give up that knowledge just because someone else is doing the cooking. Ask how your meals are prepared to avoid certain no-no’s, like trans fatty acids, which are found in margarine.
Incorporate cancer-fighting foods into your daily meals. Evidence from several studies suggests that fish can help protect against prostate cancer because they have good fat, particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Likewise, a lack of vegetables in the diet is linked to a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer, according to experts at the Prostate Cancer Foundation. A buffet can derail a diet quickly. When possible, skip the all-you-can-eat food fest and opt for individual menu items instead. When you can‚ resist a buffet, eat an entire plate of salad before hitting the main dishes. Just be sure to go light on cheese and dressing and heavy on
Remember to exercise each day, whether it’s exploring a new location on foot, or taking a swim in the hotel pool. Beyond burning calories, endurance exercises are particularly effective at increasing the body’s natural levels of antioxidants, eliminating inflammatory molecules that drive cancer. Relax and enjoy your trip. Reducing stress can lead to a longer, happier life. More wellness tips can be found at www.PCF.org.

County Office of Women’s Policy Joins Domestic Violence Advocacy Consortium to Warn about Stalking SANTA CLARA COUNTY To a casual observer, it might appear just plain odd, annoying, yet harmless behavior. But the physical and emotional distress experienced by victims demonstrate that not only is it serious, but it also can be a very dangerous matter. January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and the County of Santa Clara Office of Women’s Policy is partnering with the Domestic Violence Advocacy Consortium to encourage everyone to focus on a crime, that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects millions of people in the United States every year. “Raising awareness helps the victims and their families identify with confidence this type of behavior and seek the protection to which they are entitled,” said County of Santa Clara George Shirakawa, Chair of the Board’s Public Safety and Justice Committee. “We want to reassure the victims that they are not alone and they can fight this crime.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NIPSVS), one in six women and one in 19 men have been stalked during their life-
time. For both female and male victims, stalking was often committed by people they knew, or with whom they had a relationship. “Like domestic violence, stalking is a crime of control and power that impacts people of all ages, origins and educational, social and cultural backgrounds,” said Esther Peralez-Dieckmann, Director of the County of Santa Clara Office of Women’s Policy. “Anyone can be stalked, so an understanding of this crime and empowering victims with information and resources to seek immediate help is crucial.”
mestic Violence Advocacy Consortium Director. Stalking is difficult to recognize, investigate and prosecute, because at times it might look as odd, but harmless, behavior. Quite often stalkers do not fit standard psychological profiles, and many follow their victims from one jurisdiction to another. One in four victims reports that the stalker uses technology to track the victim’s daily activities.

What victims should do In recognition of National Stalking Awareness Month, the County of Santa Clara and the Domestic Violence Advocacy Consortium are providing advice to safeguard victims and educate witnesses on what they can do to help: - If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
According to the Stalking Resource Center, National Center for Victims of Crime, stalking is a pattern of repeated (two or more occasions), unwanted attention, harassment, contact, or any other type of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear for their safety. Because victims usually know their perpetrators, their behavior may appear harmless to outside observers; however, victims often endure intense physical and emotional distress. Many lose time from work or have to relocate because of the stalking.
Unlike other crimes, stalking may take many forms, such as assaults, threats, vandalism or burglary. It can manifest as unwanted calls, gifts, flowers, or visits; repeated, unwanted, intrusive, and frightening communications from the perpetrator by phone, mail, and/or email; following or waiting for the victim at places such as home, school, work, or recreation place; making direct or indirect threats to harm the victim, the victim’s children, relatives, friends, pets or property; hiring private investigators, going through the victim’s garbage, following the victim, contacting victim’s friends, family work, or neighbors. All are common techniques used in stalking.
“If more people learn to recognize stalking, we have a better chance to protect victims and prevent tragedies in Santa Clara County,” said Cynthia Hunter, Do-

- Do not communicate with the stalker or respond to attempts to contact you.
- Trust your instincts. Do not downplay the danger. If you feel you are unsafe, you probably are. - Take threats seriously. Danger generally is higher when the stalker talks about suicide or murder, or when the victim tries to leave or end the relationship. - Contact a local crisis line. They can help you devise a safety plan and give you information about laws to protect you. - Develop a safety plan, including things like changing your routine, arranging a place to stay and having a friend or relative go places with you.
- Keep evidence of the stalking. - Contact the Police. - Consider getting a court order that directs the stalker to stay away from you. - Tell family, friends and co-workers about the stalking and seek their support. - Warn security staff at your job or school about the stalking and ask them to help watch out for your safety.

Picture Perfect Home Decorating Tips From a Pro (NewsUSA) Decorating can be one of the most exciting times during your experience as a homeowner. Not only are you creating the essence of your home, you are also adding your very own personal touch and style. One of the easiest ways to add unique spice to an ordinarily drab room -- incorporate exceptional artwork. “Many of my clients are simply amazed at how effective a colorful painting can be at bringing new life to a room that has become tired,” says Matthew Johnston, an artist known for his vibrant Tall Tulips paintings. However, as easy as it sounds, purchasing and hanging a painting on the center of the wall isn’t going to cut it in most cases. Johnston offers his advice to ensure your next painting purchases work with your room
rather than against it: Large High-Traffic Rooms For family rooms, living rooms and rooms off the kitchen, Johnston recommends figurative diptych paintings to create a story within each area. Diptych paintings consist of two separate panels that hang together and work as one. “In my figurative diptych paintings, each figure has their own physical space, yet they are a couple,” says Johnston. “Their face is cropped, and viewers can imagine themselves as being in the painting. The viewer has to look to other parts of the painting to imagine a story ... each individual person can create a different story for the painting.” Awkward Wall Spaces For stairways, long hallways and between windows, Johnston recommends using
a tall, narrow painting. “They are perfect for hanging up a staircase,” says Johnston. This style of painting also works well because they are bright and don’t require ideal lighting. Focal Wall Areas Spaces like the area over a fireplace will get a lot of attention from passersby. Hanging your prized piece is the perfect step for these spots. “Many of my clients choose my large floral paintings,” says Johnston. “Oftentimes, they will hang these on a wall which faces the front door ... to make an impression when first walking in the home.” To learn more about Matthew Johnston and his work, visit

Rembrandt’s Century SAN FRANCISCO Drawn largely from the collection of works on paper in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco’s Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Rembrandt’s Century examines a wide range of artworks from the 17th-century. Complementing the upcoming Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis, this exhibition sheds further light on the Dutch Golden Age and the remarkable artistic achievements of Rembrandt and his peers. At its core is a selection of etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn—arguably his generation’s most influential artist. Both Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis and Rembrandt’s Century will be on view in the Herbst Exhibition Galleries at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from January 26–June 2, 2013.Rembrandt was both a teacher and a student. While his work was among the most vigorously collected during this period, he too was
a collector. Like the sea shells and other natural wonders he collected, depictions of which are shared in this exhibition,
Rembrandt collected knowledge, which he disseminated to his students and followers. Championing etching as an original form of artistic expression, and technically experimenting with each stage of the etching process, Rembrandt inspired artists around the world for generations to come. Rembrandt’s Century examines a time when printmaking was becoming of particular cultural importance. Exhibition Curator James Ganz notes, “More

To Get Ahead at Work, Ditch the Flip-Flops
Businesses are Again Moving Toward More Polished Attire, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg aside. For many men, the days of wearing hoodies and flipflops to work are over. After a decade of increasingly casual office dress requirements (inspired by Zuckerberg’s 1990s Silicon Valley predecessors), CEOs began demanding a more polished look beginning with the 2001 recession. By 2002, more formal dress codes had been reinstated by 19 percent of companies with more than $500 million in revenues, according to a Men’s Apparel Alliance survey. “The 2001 recession gave Americans a taste of the tougher job market,” says Darnell Jones, a business professional and creator of TUKZ Undergarments for men, (www.TUKZ.com), which have clasps that ensure shirts stay tucked. “Then along came the Great Recession in December 2007 and, with it, the layoffs and high unemployment we’re still experiencing. Today, if you want to get hired, and if you want to get promoted, you’ve got to look like you mean business.” Jones notes that it’s not just corporate leaders who want a more professionallooking workforce. In a
2012 survey by Salary.com, nearly 25 percent of respondents said their workplace’s dress code is too lenient. Less than 10 percent said theirs was too strict. “Right or wrong, how much care you take – or don’t take – with your appearance communicates a lot about you,” Jones says. “If you take pride in how you look, you probably take pride in the work you do. If your outfits are throwntogether or dated, you may be reckless with details and not up on the latest in your profession.” If you’re ready to give up your office hoodie, but aren’t sure what to replace it with, Jones offers these tips: • Get a navy blue or gray blazer or suit coat: Solid colors are best, although pinstripes are fine, too. Get the best material you can afford. If wearing a jacket all day doesn’t fit with your workplace vibe, keep one in your office or cubicle to have handy just in case. Whether it’s a surprise visit from a client or an unexpected meeting with the CEO, slipping on a jacket is an easy way to make a good impression. • Watch your feet: Invest in a good pair of lace-up shoes -- brown, black or, better yet, both. (The color should complement your trousers and match your belt.) Avoid square-toed
shoes -- they’re dated. Be sure your shoes are polished, and replace the heels when they get run down, particularly if you’re going on a job interview or attending an important meeting. Of course, you’ll need socks, too. They should coordinate with the color of your trousers – and with each other! • Avoid the peacock effect: Your shirt should be a solid color – no patterns and no hot pinks. Be sure it’s pressed. An undershirt is a must; it helps prevent unsightly perspiration stains and unwanted views of underlying body parts. If you’re not wearing a tie and leaving the top button or two undone, make sure the T-shirt collar is not visible at your throat. If you’re wearing a coat, about a halfinch of shirt cuff should be visible at your wrist. • Flatter your face with a V-neck: A good-quality gray, V-neck pullover sweater worn over a blue dress shirt is a great look for business casual. The bottom of the sweater should stop at your belt line. “You’ll be amazed at how much more seriously people take you when you look the part,” Jones says. “The best thing is, dressing well makes you stand taller and feel more confident. That’s really a winning look.”

Tercer Secreto de Fátima “misterio o manipulación”
You may be able to avoid getting hot under the collar when you see your energy bills if you heed a few hints that offer a good way to focus your home improvement efforts where they count. • Upgrade Your Attic Insulation. Heat escaping through the attic may account for half your home’s heat loss. Make sure there’s at least 12” of insulation up there. Upgraded insulation can even help soundproof and weatherize your house for optimum living quality. • Install Storm Windows and Doors. This can cut heat loss at those sites in half. If you can, replace single-pane windows with double- or triple-pane windows.

• Install an Automatic Setback or Programmable Thermostat that can adjust the house’s temperature around your schedule. When you’re away or asleep, program it to a cooler temperature. When you’re around, raise it and you could save up to 10 percent of your heating and cooling costs. • Check Your Furnace. Change filters frequently. Also clean air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed. Change forcedair heating system air filters monthly as well. • Take Advantage of Solar Energy. Simply opening the drapes on sunny winter days can let sunshine in to naturally warm your home. Similarly, closing them at night can reduce heat loss.
• Use a Humidifier. If your furnace doesn’t have a builtin humidifier, get one for frequently used areas. The additional moisture can make it feel as much as 8° warmer than the actual temperature. • Insulate the Concrete Slab That Supports Your House. It’s estimated that 10 percent or more of a home’s energy loss can come from an uninsulated foundation. By adding the EnergyEdge system from CertainTeed, you can cut back on bills and help save the environment. Featuring PVC rails with expanded polystyrene insulation, it can be applied by handy homeowners or professional contractors to the exposed slab edge or other exposed foundation of the house.

Setting the stage for great game-day watching
(BPT) When you’re playing a sport, the playing field is a key component of the experience, whether it’s a muddy lot in the neighborhood park or top-quality turf in a prostyle stadium. When you’re watching your favorite sport, the viewing environment is just as much a part of the fun as the field is for game play.
As you’re gearing up to watch a major football bowl game or the pivotal match of a college basketball championship tournament, it’s important to set the stage for a great viewing experience. The game-watching pros at Sanus, makers of flat screen accessories like TV wall mounts, offer a few tips for creating the perfect environment for watching the big game:
Creating the focal point A flat screen TV is a must for most sports lovers and low prices on top-quality sets make it easy to get your hands on a screen worth your devotion. Don’t just grab the first deal you see, however. Research brands and options to find the right screen for your needs. Once you’ve decided on the screen you want, take steps to display it
for maximum impact. Wall mounting a flat screen is the most dramatic, convenient and safe way to display a TV - especially if it’s a large set. Whatever your needs or your space, you can find a Sanus wall mount that works. Fullmotion and tilting mounts allow you to move a screen to maximize viewing from multiple points in the room - so every fan has a front-row seat for the game
Savvy seating Of course, you’ll enjoy the game from the comfort of your own sofa or easy chair, but if you’ll be entertaining guests in front of your flat screen, you’ll need extra seating. Folding chairs can be uncomfortable and unreliable, so look for more comfy alternatives. The floor can be a great spot for game watching, so consider tossing some oversized cushions on the carpet and inviting guests to get comfortable. Seating should be arranged to ensure everyone has a great view of the flat screen, but don’t forget to set up some seating off to the side for those who might want to chat without disturbing other watchers.
Sound and light
Modern flat screens offer exceptional sound quality along with great pictures, so you can be sure to hear every cheer, call and score while watching the big game. For a sound experience that makes you feel like you’re sitting on the sidelines, however, look into a surround sound system. Like many other electronic devices, prices have dropped on such systems and it’s now possible to score great sound for just a few hundred dollars. You can opt to have the system professionally installed, but setting up surround sound is well within the capabilities of even novice do-it-yourselfers. Finally, don’t overlook the importance of lighting. If you’re watching an afternoon game, pull drapes to ensure no sun glare distracts from your view of the flat screen. You’ll need some lighting for night games, but keep things just bright enough to ensure guests are safe and can easily see the refreshments. Just as the right turf and a great field can make playing your favorite sport that much more enjoyable, setting the stage for great viewing can help ensure game day is a winning experience - for you and all your guests.
