TRUMP ADDRESSES JOINT SESSION OF U.S. CONGRESS
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR President Donald J. Trump addressed a joint session of U.S. Congress this past Tuesday, 02.28.17. I was impressed by the comprehensive scope of issues presented while staying with policy statements prepared by his advisory staff. Is this not the same individual who categorized us Latinos as 'drug addicts, criminals, and rapists'? Then, like a chameleon he changed his posture when wanting support. During this presentation Trump was on his best behavior. I hope that 'Chicanos-LatinosHispanics' have learned to be wary and careful when dealing with his administration. I note that his Cabinet appointees have much wealth (several billionaires), much military experience, and almost no public service experience. Trump is trying to manage America in the same manner that he operates as a CEO who expects his staff to always agree with him and/ or support him. He has already dismissed some public servants who were providing correct expert advice when trying to warn him about his Executive Orders. Trump likes to 'win' all the time. He has selective listening skills which enable him to create his own 'reality bubble'. It was obvious to me that he wanted the U.S. Congress to support his proposed governance program proposals. He has recently experienced the 'checks & balances' system built into this nation's constitution. This nation's citizens must appreciate that the Legislative and Judicial sectors have exercised their powers with authority. Trump is not used to being subject to 'checks & balances'. The domestic issues which the Trump Administration must deal with remain stonewalled by Congress, dominated by partisan Republicans. These are: 1) Comprehensive Immigration Reform; 2) Comprehensive IRS Tax reform; 3) Domestic Economy Maintenance & Stimulation;4) Addressing Infrastructure neglect; 5) The
2010 Affordable Health Care Insurances; 6) Education issues; 7) National and community safety & security issues; 8) International Trade & Foreign Affairs, and many related matters. Trump correctly asked U.S. Congress members to set aside partisan behavior in order to become an 'engaged active and supportive' legislative body through decision-making. The most important public policy change was that of not having America continue to function as the chief global police force. Trump emphasized “I represent America and its security interests”. His administration will favor formation of 'direct treaties' on a one-on-one format rather than 'international group efforts such as the Trans Pacific Treaty' from which America has already withdrawn.' NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) is to be renegotiated to obtain 'a better deal for Americans'. In addition, Trump emphatically stated America will stand by its NATO allies now that all are 'paying their fair share of costs. “We will respect their sovereignty; they must respect America's sovereignty.” Trump also acknowledged that there is a new level of activism in America which is evident at local 'town hall meetings'. The President took a very different tone which was upbeat, optimistic, and very conventional. Trump insisted, “America is a nation that stands united in condemning racism, hatred and violence.” As an American of Mexican Heritage, I remain concerned about THAT WALL which Trump insists on building. The U.S. Congress must allocate resources to other programs having higher return on investment, e.g., apply those resources to infrastructural projects. History teaches us that the Great Wall of China, Adrian's Wall (Roman Empire), Siegfried Wall (France vs. Germany post WWI), and Berlin Wall all failed. THAT WALL is a misallocation of scarce resources needed elsewhere. Illegal immigrants will use underground tunnels or fly over THAT WALL which will be a constant reminder of the racism, bias, and bigotry which indigenous people have endured since European 'White
Supremacists' arrived as immigrants themselves. In addition some 150 nations are the source of immigrants. It is appropriate to secure our national borders; to deport the criminals; and to define our national sovereignty. Immigration reform is possible if, and when, those who benefit from existing practices are willing to support the legislation needed. Trump and his advisors would do well to review America's deportations beginning with those which happened during the Great Depression (Book: Decades of Betrayal authored by Francisco Valderrama and Raymundo Ramirez, University of New Mexico Press, 2006). Read about the Bracero Program (1942-46). Even the Eisenhower Administration had its 'Operation Wetback' deportation program. Obama was not the only 'Deporter-in-Chief ”. In regards to the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Republican partisan approach to 'REPEAL AND REPLACE' already acknowledged need to retain ACA's good points. Health care must be uncoupled from employment. Comprehensive national health care policies will require dealing with some very complex health insurance industry issues. This nation's residents need affordable health insurance. It is unethical and immoral to profit from the health misfortunes which many experience. I favor an approach which does not involve vouchers or privatization which enables a few to profit from the current practices which need to be improved. Trump admitted that this nation's health care system is more complex than anyone imagined. Not true...The Obama Administration tried to accommodate the health insurance industry; 33 Republican governors sabotaged ACA success by not participating (which undercut enrollees in very large numbers). The President's proposal to increase funding for the Pentagon concerns me in that none know if this is an indication of the current influence of the 'military-industrial complex' which former President Eisenhower warned about. It was the Eisenhower Administration that invested in the existing inter-state highway system. This infrastructure element needs upgrade and
repair. The U.S. Congress could behave in a non-partisan manner when dealing with repair and improvements of any and all infrastructural elements. Roads, highways, public transit, harbors, airports, high speed rail systems are all essential to this nation's domestic economy and its growth. Many 'shovelready' projects already exist and would, when funded, immediately employ many working class folks. It is these folks who have the propensity to spend all their earnings each month...an activity which would boost the American domestic consumer economy to a higher GDP rate. This President is an accomplished promoter, sales and business person. Trump will favor new business deals wherein it is possible to be nationalistic by 'buying American and employing Americans'. Care must be taken to not become too protective and/or nationalistic because foreign relations and trade provide markets for many services and products 'Made in America'. American productivity is higher now because of the investment in robotics and automation. It would be good to provide each chronically unemployed individual with a 'guaranteed living allowance' (which would be spent immediately when such persons purchase essential services & supples as well as pay their rents.) Economist Milton Friedman favors this GLA approach because no social services agencies & staff costs are needed. When dealing with current levels of unemployment, it is essential that the current method for calculating 'the available work force' needs to be corrected by inclusion of those laborers who have chosen not to look for a job. Currently these folks are not included in the Department of Labor statistics, which ends up 'skewing this data base into an 'alternative fact'. The Public School System, especially pre-K to 12, need to promote their accomplishments and to address the needs to eliminate corruption, waste, and inefficiencies. Their 'core curriculum' up to 7th grade needs to focus upon the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetics plus critical 'evidence based thinking' and interpersonal communication skills. Parents
must be given options for their kids: public schools, charter schools, private and religious schools, etc. Education is never free; it must be underwritten. Any 'Free college program' must be accompanied by an agreement to payback through 'public service' in underserved communities. Comprehensive IRS tax reform is very important. This nation may eliminate 'tax avoidance practices' by adopting a 'value added' approach. All subsidies must have a 'sunset clause' and the ultra-wealthy must pay their fair share of taxes; Corporations must not be able to stash their overseas profits offshore to avoid the current 35% corporate tax rate. It was reported that Apple had $220 billion stashed offshore to avoid payment of about $85 billion (which could easily have paid for local road improvements now being paid by a repressive sales tax...i.e., ordinary folks who pay sales taxes; have ordinary personal incomes. All unethical and immoral tax avoidance loophole must be eliminated. I appreciated the several examples of 'making a better deal for America' which reflect President Trump's business expertise and ability. But we all must remember that he does not follow precedents or existing standards of law & order behavior. So let's 'trust him but continue to check him out.' President Trump appropriately asked the U.S. Congress to begin its legislative deliberations in a non-partisan manner. It is essential to eliminate the current legislative gridlock.˚ Maybe he read this nation's constitution which is where 'law and order' begin. And “We, The People” must continue to speak up at Town Hall meetings. It is the best way to tell U.S. Congress members to 'just do your job' honestly and with integrity so as to re-establish public trust, integrity, and transparency. Trump and his ilk must understand that many people of color exist in this American nation...and we are here to stay because we have been here since primordial times. 'Aqui estamos y no nos vamos'. Try to display truthfulness, respect, consideration and integrity...we know we have earned that much if not more.

LA MEJOR DEFENSA ES… CONOCER TUS DERECHOS Por José López Zamorano La Red Hispana Es entendible que la nueva política migratoria de la administración Trump haya generado niveles de preocupación e incertidumbre en la comunidad de migrantes del país, especialmente ante el temor de aquellos indocumentados de que sean objeto de una deportación sumaria que los aleje de manera imprevista de sus seres queridos. Los reportes de operativos inéditos fuera de un avión, de un templo religioso o de una escuela, han alimentado un estado de ansiedad que empieza a cambiar los hábitos cotidianos, no sólo de las personas en condiciones migratorias no autorizadas, sino también de residentes legales y de ciudadanos de origen latino, temerosos de caer en las redes migratorias por el color de su piel.
Casi siete de cada diez extranjeros que habitan en los Estados Unidos y que no son ni ciudadanos ni residentes legales permanentes, viven con la preocupación natural de que pueden ser deportados en cualquier momento. Singularmente, el nivel de preocupación es muy similar entre los residentes con “Green Card”, de acuerdo con una encuesta del Centro Pew. Tiene por ello sentido la campaña lanzada por organizaciones como la Unión Nacional de Libertades Civiles (ACLU) o de gobiernos como el de México, para que todos los inmigrantes sin excepción conozcan sus derechos y sepan cómo responder si son detenidos en la calles o visitados en sus casas por autoridades migratorias. Por ejemplo, si es extranjero, no es ciudadano de los Estados Unidos y la policía
lo detiene caminado en la calle, tiene el derecho de permanecer en silencio. Puede dar su nombre y dirección, pero No tiene que acceder a ningún registro de su persona y pertenencias, pero siempre mantenga la calma y condúzcase de manera respetuosa ante las autoridades. En caso que se le notifique que será arrestado, permanezca en silencio, solicite la presencia de un abogado y pida que se le permita comunicarse con su consulado. Recuerde que tiene derecho a llamar a su abogado sin que la policía escuche el contenido de la conversación y casi todos los consulados tienen una sección de protección a sus connacionales. Cao was 1 of only 11 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Calculus BC Exam. Looking across approximately 4.7 million AP Exams taken by 2.6 million U.S. public high school students in 2016, close to 400 students earned every point possible on an AP exam, a rare accomplishment.
AP Exams are based and reported on a 5-point scale, where a 5 is equivalent to a grade of A in the corresponding college course. Cao received the top score of 5.
This was the second time he earned a perfect score on an AP exam. His first perfect score came last year when he was an 11th grader and earned a perfect score on the AP Calculus AB Exam in Spring 2015. "Anton not only possesses an exceptional aptitude and love for math, but he also demonstrates impressive diligence and persistence, which places him into a rare species of students," said Garry Redillas, Cao's AP Calculus BC math teacher. Logan Pollard California News Service LOS ANGELES - Tax season is well underway; the deadline is April 18. Tax time can mean loads of stress, especially because the U.S. Tax Code has become increasingly complicated. But Nancy McPherson, state director for AARP California, says the AARP Foundation's Tax-Aide program aims to alleviate some of the difficulties in figuring it all out.

"Many taxpayers are unaware of an Earned Income Tax Credit, or they think that they don't qualify for it, and it's actually one of the most important forms of income support for low-income workers," she explained. "So, Tax-Aide can help people figure out if they do qualify, so that they get the credits that they deserve." Last year, nearly 3,000 volunteers in California helped almost 200,000 people file their federal and state income-tax returns.
"The Foundation's focus is offering free tax preparation help to anyone, and specifically people who are 50 and older who cannot afford a tax preparation service," she said.
McPherson says her mom uses the Tax-Aide program, which is available nationwide.
Some tax experts say the average taxpayer doesn't need a tax attorney, but a service like Tax-Aide can offer helpful reassurance and guidance for basic tax questions and getting returns filed.
"My own mother in South Carolina uses it; she's 92 years old," added McPherson. "She likes to prepare her own taxes, but she also likes to have someone check it to see that she did it correctly, and someone can go over that with her to make sure she didn't miss anything."
McPherson points out that the trained Tax-Aide volunteers also are familiar with deductions you might not even know about. Just last year, she says, the Tax-Aide program helped Californians obtain over $96 million in income-tax refunds and nearly $18

El programa "Tax-Aide" Ayuda con los Impuestos, de la Fundacion AARP, es una alternativa para que todos, no solo adultos mayores, venzan el desanimo propio de la temporada de impuestos con ayuda gratuita para hacer sus declaraciones. While the campaign continues the hospital and clinic’s commitment to serve the underserved, it also reaches out to those who may not know the scope and quality of services provided by the County’s public healthcare system. SCVMC has the highest level trauma center in San Jose (and serves 3 other counties), the only comprehensive emergency department between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the only rehabilitation trauma center in California. We are a great healthcare system and are working to have more residents choose our physicians and services because of the quality of care we provide. With the current debate on the Affordable Care Act, this is a critical time for public healthcare systems. Questions about how public healthcare systems will be financed remain. If the Affordable Care Act is repealed or replaced, over 20 million people lose their health coverage and critical funding for critical public-health efforts like responding to outbreaks, healthcare to the homeless programs, and anti-smoking, diabetes prevention, and anti-obesity campaigns could be affected. The services provided by Santa Clara Valley Medical Center are important to the overall health and well-being of our community. Irrespective of changes at the national level, SCVMC wants to continue its mission and serve all members of our community.

Place the ham steaks on grill and sear on both sides, approximately 3-4 minutes each side; basting with spicy teriyaki on both sides to achieve a caramel crust. Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine garlic, oregano, olive oil, mustard, salt and pepper. Mix until blended into a paste. Using a spatula or hands, rub garlic mixture all over pork loin, massaging into meat. Place pork roast on baking pan and roast uncovered in preheated oven. Roast one hour until internal temperature reaches between 145 F to 160 F using a digital thermometer. Remove from oven. Cover loosely with foil and let stand 10 minutes before slicing. LOS ANGELES -- California immigrant rights groups say they're puzzled and want more details after President Trump sent conf licting signals about immigration on Tuesday February 28th.
The Bridge Act would give legal status to certain people who were brought to this country as children. In his speech to Congress, Trump focused on enforcement, not reform. He announced the creation of a new of f ice called VOICE - which stands for Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement - that would highlight crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.
First, the president reportedly told a group of news anchors that he's open to some sort of compromise that potentially would allow undocumented immigrants who have not committed a serious crime to gain legal status, but not citizenship. But he made no mention of it in his speech to Congress later that night. Polo Morales, political director for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said he takes everything Trump says with a grain of salt. "We've heard a lot of things from this administration all throughout the campaign. We're just not really clear on what type of compromise bill he's talking about," Morales said. "The only legislation that we see that is
Morales said the move is designed to spread fear, and only makes compromise more elusive. "Every week, having a list of undocumented people who have committed crimes, and having that lead the stories out there? That is not a way to get to immigration reform. It's actually very divisive and very dangerous," he said. The U.S. Senate passed the so-called Gang of Eight comprehensive immigration reform bill in 2013, but it has stalled in the House of Representatives.

San Jose Leaders Announce $5 Million Gift to the SJ Flood Victims Relief Fund San Jose, Calif. – City leaders gathered in the Rock Springs neighborhood to extend their gratitude to Mr. Kieu Hoang, CEO & Chairman of RAAS, for making a generous $5 million donation to the San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund on Wednesday March 1st. “Mr. Hoang’s extraordinarily generous gift will make an enormous and immediate difference for the hundreds of flood victims who’ve been forced from their homes as a result of this disaster,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo. “I will always remember how thousands of donors and volunteers came together in a time of crisis to contribute their time, energy and money to help our neighbors get back on their feet.” The seven-figure gift reflects a joint effort between Mayor Sam Liccardo, Councilmember Tam Nguyen and Mr. Chieu Van Le, co-founder of Lee’s Sandwiches, who has been a long-time friend of Mr. Hoang and helped connect him with city leaders and the relief effort. "I'm humbled by the kindness of Mr. Chieu Van Le and the generosity of his good friend Kieu Hoang who reached out to me yesterday to help the flood victims,” said Councilmember Tam Nguyen. “And I am pleased that the Mayor has been prepared to accept this wonderful donation from Mr. Hoang and will see to it that his wish be fulfilled and that the victims will be helped in a timely manner."
The San Jose Flood Victims Relief Fund will provide identified non-profit organizations with funding to intake, screen, and assess displaced flood victims and offer emergency financial assistance to support housing stability and other immediate needs. Types of direct financial assistance may include temporary rental subsidies, hotel vouchers, work-related tools or equipment, vehicle repairs or replacement, home furnishings, or other immediate needs support, and priority will be given to vulnerable households that have been either temporarily or permanently displaced from their homes. When added to the thousands of other generous gifts received to-date, the fund has now raised more than $6 million that will be used to provide relief and assistance to food victims most severely impacted by flooding along the Coyote Creek last week. The fund was established jointly by Mayor Sam Liccardo and Silicon Valley Community Foundation. “The outpouring of community support for those whose lives have been affected by last week’s flooding has been tremendous,” said Emmett D. Carson, Ph.D., CEO and president of Silicon Valley Community Foundation. “This newly announced gift – combined with the many donations from Silicon Valley residents and companies who were moved to help – will bring muchneeded assistance to those who’ve been harmed by the flood.”

Q&A with Cinequest’s Virtual Reality Specialist Kendall Stevens
You have spent a lot of time breathing thinking and working with VR. Any memorable experiences with thus far? So I think one of my favorite experiences was when we received a couple of horror pieces and one of them was “Choose Your Death”, so you could either be buried or cremated, so when you put people in the headsets and they’re not a big fan of horror, let alone in VR, and they’re just going, ‘Oh my god! Oh my god!’, it’s great. But then also when you watch these animation clips such as “Asteroids!”, the emotions that are evoked when you get to connect with these characters on such a level, it’s really cute. Who would know that these two little aliens, Mac and Cheese, can make you so empathetic towards them. And empathy is the driving word you’ll hear in VR time and time again. Since you’ve been part of the curation, what VR experiences should people not miss this year?

Arturo Hilario El Observador Cinequest 27, officially known as Cinequest Film & VR Festival, brings a new age of virtual content, curated by their VR Project Manager Kendall Stevens. In its first year of brining VR component to the festival, we were eager to find out from Stevens what the happenings where with the VR, including the Forums & Panels, Canteen & Immersive Experiences, Cinema Programs and workshops. Mind you, this is just the virtual reality experiences, there's also a whole world of films to explore this year at Cinequest. So let's get to it! Hi Kendall, thanks for the interview. Could you tell me a bit about yourself. What was the path to getting into what you are doing with your career now as the VR Project Manager? Where you originally interested in tech? Business? Arts? I had always been an avid fan of film, I was born in the Pacific Palisades so grew up in the spotlight, we had some great neighbors like Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise so I idolized them as a child and had thought that was going to be the path that I originally wanted but by the time I got to high school I decided to pursue a more operational, finance side and ended up getting a degree in Microeconomics and after that it took six months that I didn’t want to buy and sell I wanted to create, so I dove back into wanting to be in an industry where there is constant innovation and creation. So for VR particularly I had a friend that is part of the Facebook Oculus team and hearing their story with the Kickstarter and when they were acquired by Facebook, Palmer Luckey’s company I should say, I grew a passionate interest in TI and from there it was just studying and understanding how the technology works, where it’s going
and how it can be applied across the film and entertainment industry as well as other verticals.
I think trying to make sure you attend the workshops and forums, especially if you’re ever interested in creating some type of content or wanting to understand the space that is a huge highlight as well as. Come to the Canteen, grab a drink, get to see firsthand what it's like to experience something with a VIVE (HTC VR equipment) where you’re walking around, or we have Playstation and for everybody that’s been a fan, I myself have one of these at home, it is so much fun, I probably wouldn’t work if I could just play all day. It’s such a different
MARCH 3 - 9, 2017 feeling and it’s so immersive and so expansive that to see where it is now and where it will continue to grow, the possibilities are endless for VR, and that continues to emerge with things like augmented reality and mixed reality. I imagine that a year from now it will be a complete different platform and space then what it is today, it will keep going. Some of the VR panels have home roots in the bay area. Can you talk a bit about those? There are [short films] like, “A Tango in San Francisco” by Jason Tang, he is local, we have quite a few of our panelists from the Bay Area. Marco DeMorose is the partner of the VR Fund, one of the largest VR funding companies, he’s one of our panelists. HTC is right in our home, Silicon Valley, and our strategic location of being based here, we have that first hand experience, to be in this hub, seeing what’s at the forefront of technology and getting to work with people like Oculus and HTC, Samsung, a lot of different providers as well as artists. Now that the festival is in swing could you make a comment on what you see for the future of this element within Cinequest? This being our first year a lot of it was securing the content, the relationships and really creating a presence in VR and I think going forward promoting and now that I think now that we’ve set the state we can really take off and continue to, as our theme is, elevate.
How's your day-to-day here helming the VR at Cinequest? Halfdan (Halfdan Hussey, Cinequest's CEO and Co-Founder), who's been amazing, hired me on to help him create and produce all of the different programs and with that your day-today encompasses everything. You’re working across all divisions, whether it’s marketing, distribution tech, operation, ticketing, the list is endless. The best part for me has been the content curation and the discovery of content, working with these studios, having these touch points, because VR is so new you have a chance to speak with the executives of the company where in a regular film world it’s almost impossible to, and you’ll get really lucky if you get to. So its been a fun, amazing, broad experience. Sounds fun. Now why incorporate Virtual Reality this year? What was the reason for having it this year? With VR it has been gaining momentum in recent years, through the acquisition of Palmer Luckey’s company in 2014, we wanted to make sure there was enough content and diversity, great quality content because for a while people in Live 360 were still trying to figure out the technology and really develop good 4k quality, the stitching, the overall production of it has been, still, a constant work in progress and with animation I think we’re really at a great point. This year we wanted to make sure that we led an amazing, world class, ‘set the platform’ form type festival. And with the lineup of artists, the type of content and the amount of content I think we’ve covered all bases.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – On the eve of Oscars Weekend, Friday, the 24th, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) honored outstanding contributions to the positive portrayals of Latinos in media for the 20th year at its Annual NHMC Impact Awards Gala at the historic Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. “Though the Oscars this year once again fail to recognize the tremendous Latino talent in entertainment today, NHMC’s Impact Awards Gala seeks to give these creatives the accolades they deserve and excite a new generation of young people,” said Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. “Latinos represent 18 percent of the population and the biggest group of moviegoers in the country. Our community deserves more from film studios, a fair shot to increase the positive portrayals of Latinos across America like all of our honorees are striving to do.

Gerber said, "It is a privilege to bring Elena's adventures to life on-screen, and we are honored to be recognized by the National Hispanic Media Coalition for this princess who proudly represents her heritage by embodying strong values and a responsibility to both her family and her kingdom." Olivas adds, "As a Latina woman and mother, I am so proud to work on a show that brings our diverse cultures to the forefront of children's television. Growing up, there were not many characters on TV that I could directly identify with, so it's a dream come true to provide today's children with a representation of themselves through Princess Elena and the world of Avalor." writing class. 4 – Accountants & Bookkeepers Data processing probably created more jobs than it eliminated, but machine learning– based accountants and bookkeepers will be so much better than their human counterparts, you’re going to want to use the machines. Robo-accounting is in its infancy, but it’s awesome at dealing with accounts payable and receivable, inventory control, auditing and several other accounting functions that humans used to be needed to do. Big Four auditing is in for a big shake-up, very soon. 5 – Doctors This may be one of the only guaranteed positive outcomes of robots’ taking human jobs. The current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to a new UN DESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) report. In practice, if everyone who ever wanted to be a doctor became one, we still would not have enough doctors.

Shelly Palmer Oxford University researchers have estimated that 47 percent of U.S. jobs could be automated within the next two decades. But which ones will robots take first? First, we should define “robots” (for this article only) as technologies, such as machine learning algorithms running on purpose-built computer platforms, that have been trained to perform tasks that currently require humans to perform. With this in mind, let’s think about what you’ll do after white-collar work. Oh, and I do have a solution for the short term that will make you the last to lose your job to a robot, but I’m saving it for the end of the article. 1 – Middle Management If your main job function is taking a number from one box in Excel and putting it in another box in Excel and writing a narrative about how the number got from place to place, robots are knocking at your door. Any job where your “special and unique” knowledge of the industry is applied to divine a causal relationship between numbers in a matrix is going to be replaced first. Be ready.
2 – Commodity Salespeople (Ad Sales, Supplies, etc.) Unless you sell dreams or magic or negotiate using special perks, bribes or other valuable add-ons that have nothing to do with specifications, price and availability, start thinking about your next gig. Machines can take so much cost out of any sales process (request for proposal, quotation, order and fulfillment system), it is the fiduciary responsibility of your CEO and the board to hire robots. You’re fighting gravity … get out! 3 – Report Writers, Journalists, Authors & Announcers Writing is tough. But not report writing. Machines can be taught to read data, pattern match images or video, or analyze almost any kind of research materials and create a very readable (or announceable) writing. Text-to-speech systems are evolving so quickly and sound so realistic, I expect both play-by-play and color commentators to be put out of work relatively soon – to say nothing about the numbered days of sports or financial writers. The good news is that robots make amazing doctors, diagnosticians and surgeons. According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, IBM’s Watson is teaming up with a dozen US hospitals to offer advice on the best treatments for a range of cancer, and also helping to spot early-stage skin cancers. And ultraprecise robo-surgeons are currently used for everything from knee replacement surgery to vision correction. This trend is continuing at an incredible pace. I’m not sure how robodoc bedside manner will be, but you could program a “Be warm and fuzzy” algorithm and the robodoc would act warm and fuzzy. (Maybe I can get someone to program my human doctors with a warm and fuzzy algorithm?) But Very Few Jobs Are Safe During the Obama administration, a report of the president was published (it is no longer available at whitehouse.gov, but here’s the original link) that included a very dire prediction: “There is an 83% chance that workers who earn $20 an hour or less could have their jobs replaced by robots

in the next five years. Those in the $40 an hour pay range face a 31% chance of having their jobs taken over by the machines.” Clearly, the robots are coming. What to Do About It In What Will You Do After White-Collar Work?, I propose, “First, technological progress is neither good nor bad; it just is. There’s no point in worrying about it, and there is certainly no point trying to add some narrative about the “good ol’ days.” It won’t help anyone. The good news is that we know what’s coming. All we have to do is adapt. Adapting to this change is going to require us to understand how man-machine partnerships are going to evolve. This is tricky, but not impossible. We know that machine learning is going to be used to automate many, if not most, low-level cognitive tasks. Our goal is to use our highlevel cognitive ability to anticipate what parts of our work will be fully automated and what parts of our work will be so hard for machines to do that man-machine partnership is the most practical approach. With that strategy, we can work on adapting our skills to become better than our peers at leveraging man-machine partnerships. We’ve always been toolusers; now we will become tool-partners.” Becoming a great man-machine partner team will not save every job, but it is a clear pathway to prolonging your current career while you figure out what your job must evolve into in order to continue to transfer the value of your personal intellectual property into wealth. Daily Commute Can Cause Stress Levels to Soar Veronica Carter Public News Service ST. LOUIS -- The more time spent in the car, the more experts say it can impact our mental and physical health. The average American spends more than 25 minutes commuting to and from work and school. It's a little less in Missouri, where the average commute time is 16 minutes. Researchers have found that daily commutes longer than 20 minutes can make a person more susceptible to chronic stress, or "burnout.” Sports and internal medicine doctor A.K. Mishra said those with lengthy commutes are more likely to feel tired and stressed, but he said there are ways to make the most of the time on the road. "Sometimes there's just things we want to think about and sometimes the only time we have to ourselves is in the car,” Mishra said; “and people find peace in talking to themselves, and talking out ideas or things that are on their minds." Mishra said taking public transportation can be stressful as well, but it's better on the mind and body than driving because of the chance to nap or just relax while
someone else deals with traffic. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 12 percent of households in Missouri and the Midwest report using public transportation. Traveling can be a major cause of stress, Mishra said, because it's unpredictable and people may feel as though they have no control. Commuters can experience boredom, social isolation, anger and frustration from problems such as traffic or delays.

He said listening to music or audio books can help, but he also suggested practicing a form of yoga and meditation. "One way to do that is to just breathe gently and be cognizant of how shallow ones breaths typically are in the context of being stressed,” Mishra said. Sitting behind the wheel or in a plane or train is hard on the body as well, and Mishra said people who sit in the same position repeatedly or for long periods are at an increased risk for chronic back or neck problems. He said it's important to stretch before you leave, and try to switch positions often if you can't stop and take a break.
