CAN THE CORONAVIRUS BE TRANSMITTED BY THE COMMUNION CHALICE?

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

T

his past Sunday, a parishioner asked during the forum following the Sunday 10 AM church service: Can the coronavirus be transmitted to cummunicants by the Blessed Wince Chalice? The simple direct answer is Not very likely if the wine chalice's surface is made of gold or silver. Both gold and silver have microbial killing actions. This past March 1, 2020 Sunday’s discussion of our practices around reception of the Eucharist. I want to be both clear and thorough around this topic, and so I am breaking it down into manageable pieces (I hope!).

This is simply to re-state what Fr. Terry Gleeson said during Sunday's Forum. If you desire to receive Holy Communion as wine, the healthiest option by far is to drink directly from the common cup (i.e., the Chalice). Fr David Sibley, a scientist before ordination, has written that peer reviewed studies and Centers for Disease Control guidance since the 1980s have consistently shown that “no documented transmission of any infectious disease has ever been traced to the use of a common communion cup” and “the risk for infectious disease transmission by a common communion cup is very low, and appropriate safeguards--that is, wiping the interior and exterior rim between communicants, use of care to rotate the cloth during use, and use of a clean cloth for each service - would further diminish this risk.” American Journal of Infection Control

(Vol. 26, No. 5, 1998). As we noted on Sunday, the higher-than-usual alcohol content of sacramental wine and the antibacterial action of the chalice silver or gold surface, combined with the above precautions, render this a reliably safe method of communicating. The same cannot be said, however, for “self-intinction” – that is, individuals dipping the consecrated host into the chalice's wine themselves. Although this is what we all have done automatically when we have a cold. The host resting on one hand – particularly after the exchange of peace – and then being dipped into the chalice, heightens the risk that some contamination of the cup will occur. What appears to be the most hygienic method can, in fact, be the least, and as Fr David notes, “any experienced Eucharistic Minister or clergy person will tell you, it is a common

occurrence, when people intinct the host, or their fingers to touch either the consecrated wine or the side of the chalice. This is an addition to, in fact, less sanitary than drinking in the first place. We can make sure our Eucharistic Ministers and clergy wash their hands, but we can't do the same for the congregation.” As noted yesterday, long standing Anglican practice and good theology, as well as our own Book of Common Prayer, impel us to offer the common cup to all those who wish to receive from it. They do not demand that anyone receive from the cup, nor do they speak of intinction. I offer the above for your continued reflection and discernment. Historic experience has continued to be non-infectious. This is important these days when mainstream media is emphasizing these

coronavirus deaths. The reality is that the common flu virus is responsible for about 12,000 deaths per year worldwide, a fact which elicits no mainstream media focused commentary. If one does what is necessary to sustain good health, practice coughing and sneezing into the crook of your elbow; and avoids overcrowded room contact with others, etc., the likelihood of contacting this coronavirus is negligible during this flu & cold winter season. Just isolate yourself if you acquire an infectious flu disease and use discretion and common sense to minimize its spread to others. That means getting enough sleep (at least 7 hours for adults; more for kids) and a balanced diet. Remember that your personal immune system is always doing its best to keep you healthy and hearty.

A

ACRAMENTO, Calif. - Education groups are praising a unanimous decision by a legislative committee Wednesday February 26 to audit the state's first online community college, called Calbright College. Lawmakers expressed concern about transparency and duplication of current offerings. Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers, says the $140 million invested in Calbright would have been better spent bolstering online programs at existing community colleges.

"Could have done it cheaper, could have done it with the expertise of the faculty that are already employed by our community colleges," says Freitas. Calbright College launched on October first and has 450 students enrolled, but just 38 who are pursuing certificates in medical coding, IT or cybersecurity. Its goal is to help working adults get flexible, low-cost job training. CFT Community College Council president Jim Mahler says the funding imbalance in favor of Calbright is stark. "If you look at the funding per full time equivalent student at Calbright," says Mahler, "they're being funded at the rate of 1,000 times what the rest of our students are getting funded at our traditional community colleges." "The cost of launching ICOM Academy was $500,000 - less than 1% of the investment put in Calbright," says Cortez. "We could do a lot more to support student success by reinvesting that funding in existing districts that are aiming to expand distance-education opportunities." Calbright has no full-time faculty and has been criticized for awarding a no-bid executive-recruitment contract to a friend of the former college president.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Projects that promote livability for people of all ages may be eligible for thousands of dollars in grants as part of the Community Challenge grant program from AARP. The program, now in its fourth year, has funded 13 projects across California so far. Tori Kjer, executive director of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, said the grant allowed her group to put the finishing touches on Golden Age Park in the city's dense, urban Westlake neighborhood last year. "The grant allowed us to bring in exercise equipment, barbecues, picnic tables, supportive walking paths," she said, and "really supported all the amenities that went in to make the park the beautiful, accessible space that it is for the community."

The park is next to a senior center and affordable housing, so the paths, play equipment and community garden were designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Groups, towns or agencies can apply for the grants now through April 1 at AARP.org/communitychallenge. Jennifer Berdugo, associate state director of AARP California, said the winning projects will have shown that they can increase civic engagement, create vibrant public places, deliver transportation and mobility options, support availability of a range of housing, demonstrate the value of "smart cities" or improve livability. "Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to several thousand or tens of thousands for larger projects," she said.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

E

ach of the remaining Democratic candidates has plenty of environmental cred—especially compared to Donald Trump. Frontrunner Bernie Sanders has been a backer of the omnibus Green New Deal, which calls for 100 percent clean energy by 2040 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 across all sectors, including homes and buildings. Joe Biden is a solid contender on climate and environment, and has embraced the Green New Deal as a “central framework”—and as such supports efforts to get the U.S. to netzero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. He intends to do so by spending some $1.7 trillion in federal dollars over the next decade alongside another $3.3 trillion in investments by the private sector and state and local governments. Tom Steyer has parlayed some $250 million in hedge fund profits into powerful Political Action Fund campaigns to oust climate-denying Congresspersons and combat the political monies being thrown around by fossil fuel magnates like the Koch Brothers. When Washington governor and climate crusader Jay Inslee dropped out of the primary race a few months ago, Elizabeth Warren adopted his omnibus climate action plan as her own. Pete Buttigieg also hopes to have the opportunity to implement his own ambitious climate mitigation plan aiming for nationwide “net-zero” emissions by 2050 through the expansion of clean energy jobs and domestic development of exportable green technologies. Buttigieg’s climate plan represents a scaled down version of the Green New Deal but puts an interesting twist on U.S. climate change mitigation efforts through the lens of national security and military preparedness.

Lufrani, who refuses to wear a mask so as to not cause more alarm. Outside the hospital, the city maintains its usual rhythms in a certain way, although there are signs that show that something has changed, such as Piazza Navona with hardly any tourists, the almost empty Pantheon or the Trevi Fountain with plenty of space to take photos, an unusual sight in one of the most traversed points on earth.

"This structure stood up precisely so as not to have a crowd of people arriving at the hospital and to prevent their contact," said Lufrani, who explains how the entire space is disinfected every time there is a suspicious case. Patients who arrive at this kind of temporary hospital should use portable toilets outside the structure, which are also periodically disinfected, and only when doctors have performed all the necessary checks, are they taken to the interior of the center. ome, Italy - Rome had so far remained relatively oblivious to the social alarm generated in northern Italy because of the coronavirus, but recently the ‘eternal city’ has begun to see nearly empty monuments, an unusually spacious public transport and some closed shops and restaurants. In the infectious diseases’ hospital Lazzaro Spallanzani, a center in the country in the fight against the virus, a large tent has been enabled to welcome patients who arrive believing they have been infected, increasingly by "social psychosis," says Franco Lufrani, the person in charge of emergencies at the center. Inside the center there are eight active cases, two of them serious, but there are more than 20 people who pass through this tent every day with the suspicion of carrying the virus, of which "the vast majority have nothing but fever, [and are sent home]”, says

Of all those who enter this space, the vast majority, 203 people, are negative in coronavirus and many are not even tested for this virus because they do not show any symptoms. Lufrani does not venture to say if there will be a large increase in visits to this tent, but the structure, with four aisles to isolate patients and a large area in the center to do the tests, is designed to house more patients if the alarm keeps growing.

At the moment in Rome there is no coronavirus focus, said the doctors of Spallanzani, and the cases present in the city have an epidemiological link with the most affected northern regions, Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, but that has not slowed down a devastating fall in tourist reservations. In March alone, there have been 90% rate of hotel cancellations, data like that of the most affected cities such as Milan or Venice, which after weeks of closure of monuments and museums are returning to normal and eliminating restrictions. Because tourism suffers, there has been slowing of a great economic engine of the Italian capital, which had almost 20 million arrivals last year. The alarm also affects the Romans themselves, many of whom go to the Spallanzani to check if they are infected by the coronavirus.

a música es un relajante para el cuerpo, la mente y el espíritu, por tal motivo ha sido considerada como terapia de motivación personal. Sus ritmos inspiran gozo, humor y fantasía. Es recomendable escuchar canciones y melodías con mensajes positivos que contagien entusiasmo. Los ritmos tropicales resultan óptimos para levantar el ánimo y avivar el espíritu. La música armoniza el ambiente, alimenta de energía a los sortilegios y aleja las malas vibraciones;
