JOHNSON AND JOHNSON VACCINE COULD BE GAME CHANGER IN GETTING U.S. VACCINATED BY END OF SUMMER

s the U.S. struggles with the slow pace of COVID-19 vaccine administration, experts predict the new Johnson and Johnson immunization authorized for emergency distribution Feb. 27 and delivered in a single shot, could be a game changer, potentially allowing all who want the preventive measure to be vaccinated by the end of this summer.

Moreover, the J&J vaccine can be stored in a refrigerator, overcoming the challenges of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which must be stored at minus 80 degrees Celsius and minus 20 degrees Celsius, respectively. The lag time to see full efficacy is shorter with a single dose regimen: 14 days with the J&J vaccine, versus 42 to 49 days with the twodose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, explained Fan.

President Joe Biden announced March 2 that there will be enough COVID-19 vaccine available in May for every adult in the U.S., in large part because of a deal reached by Johnson and Johnson and Merck, which will help with manufacturing. The bottleneck, however, lies in administering the doses and vaccine hesitancy. Nonetheless, the U.S. is getting the vaccine into people’s arms at a rate of two million doses per day, surpassing Biden’s expectations. In California, the Department of Public Health announced March 6 that its providers have administered more than 10.2 million doses. “It is great news that we have a third vaccine on the scene approved by the FDA: the Johnson and Johnson adenovirus DNA vaccine, said UC Davis Health Science Clinical Professor Dr. Dali Fan, who serves as a volunteer vaccinator at California Northstate University in Elk Grove, California. He noted that the J&J vaccine is a single dose regimen that is much easier to store. “So with three players coming to the battlefield, the tide has turned in our favor. We can greatly elevate the speed at which the American population gets vaccinated.”

The challenges lie in registration, recruiting sufficient vaccinators, finding people to vaccinate if a person does not show up for an appointment — so as not to waste a dose — and monitoring a vaccinated person for 15 minutes after they have received the shot. Speaking to Ethnic Media Services late evening March 4, after administering more than two dozen

doses at the CNU clinic, Fan joked: “It is always the rule that, when you're in a rush, it’s the last patient that creates trouble. It's never the first patient.” The CNU clinic has placed a priority on vaccinating educators who will return to schools later this month, under Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan for re-opening schools, announced March 1. All three vaccines currently available — the Johnson and Johnson, the Pfizer, and the Moderna — are equally efficacious, said Fan, addressing the rumors that the J&J vaccine was less effective at preventing a COVID illness. “You shouldn’t worry about which vaccine you’re getting: just get vaccinated,” he said.

Data has not yet been released as to how long the vaccines will last. Fan said that information was not yet available. “We know that it is safe to say that the immunization should last for more than six months and after that you may need supplemental injection next year.” “Hopefully if there are enough people getting vaccinated, the virus the pandemic will die down and die off entirely.” Johnson and Johnson is currently studying for a second shot and Moderna and Pfizer are studying for a third shot which would be engineered towards the new, more contagious and more virulent mutant variants, including the Brazilian variant, the U.K. variant, the South African variant, and a variant that has sprung up in the Bakersfield region of California.

egún la FDA, una autorización de uso de emergencia (EUA, por sus siglas en inglés) es un mecanismo para facilitar la disponibilidad y el uso de contramedidas médicas, incluidas las vacunas, durante emergencias de salud pública, como la pandemia de la COVID-19 actual.1 Una EUA permite el uso de productos médicos, aún no aprobados, cuando no existen alternativas adecuadas, aprobadas y disponibles. Desde el inicio de la pandemia de la COVID-19, la FDA ha otorgado EUAs para determinados productos médicos y fármacos que cree que pueden ayudar a abordar el impacto del virus en el público estadounidense. ¿Cuáles son los criterios para que una vacuna candidata contra la COVID-19 reciba una EUA? ccording to the FDA, an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, during public health emergencies, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.1 An EUA allows the use of medical products, not yet approved, when there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA has issued EUAs for select medical products and drugs it believes may help address the impact of the virus on the American public. What are the criteria for a COVID-19 vaccine candidate to receive an EUA? When the Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary has issued a public health emergency the FDA may issue an EUA after it has determined that the following requirements are met: * Based on available scientific evidence, including data from clinical trials, it is reasonable to believe that the product may be effective to prevent, diagnose or treat serious or lifethreatening diseases or conditions that can

be caused by SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). * The identified and potential benefits of the product, when used to diagnose, prevent or treat the identified serious or life-threatening disease or condition, outweigh the identified and potential risks of the product. * There is no adequate, approved and available alternative to the product for diagnosing, preventing or treating the disease or condition. Who will have access to a vaccine that receives an EUA? In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will recommend the allocation of vaccine doses and who should receive a vaccine first, if there are not enough doses of the vaccine for everyone. On December 1, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) made initial recommendations on who should be offered COVID-19 vaccination in the initial phase of the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program, while there is limited vaccine supply, and recommended that healthcare personnel and residents of longterm care facilities should be prioritized first. Will an EUA mean that the vaccine has been tested for safety? Issuance of an EUA for a COVID-19 vaccine requires a determination by the FDA that the vaccine's known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks based on data from at least one well-designed Phase 3 clinical trial that demonstrates the vaccine's safety and efficacy in a clear and compelling manner.2 An EUA for COVID-19 vaccines will be assessed by the FDA on a case-by-case basis considering all available scientific evidence. Doctors say it’s vital that Americans get vaccinated when it’s their turn, and continue to take precautions against infection. “Vaccinations are safe, effective, prevent illness and save lives. They offer an incredible opportunity for us to help defeat COVID-19 and regain normalcy,” says American Medical Association (AMA) president, Susan R. Bailey, M.D. “But with more contagious variants of the virus circulating throughout the U.S., now is not the time to let your guard down or scale back on the measures that we know will work to prevent further illness and deaths, such as wearing masks, practicing physical distancing, and washing hands.” To protect yourself and your loved ones, the AMA offers the following guidance: • At some point, likely in the next few months, it will be your turn to get the vaccine. También otras personas que no hablan el inglés están teniendo problemas para obtener información inteligible y servicios durante la pandemia. Justice in Aging y el Center for Medicare Advocacy han presentado una demanda en nombre de dos organizaciones comunitarias en Los Ángeles que trabajan con adultos mayores que hablan un inglés limitado. Estas organizaciones han observado un aumento de señores que hablan chino y otros idiomas buscando ayuda para reservar su cita para la vacuna COVID-19, según la demanda.

Pero él y su esposa, Marcelina Hernández López, tenían tantas preguntas. ¿Qué medicamentos le estaban dando? ¿Cómo el virus estaba afectando su cuerpo? Y lo más importante: ¿Iba a sobrevivir? En el Hospital Mercy en el suroeste de Bakersfield, nadie hablaba el idioma de la pareja, el Mixteco, un idioma indígena del sur de México. Hernández, de 62 años, desconocía que tenía el derecho, de acuerdo con la ley estatal y federal, de solicitar un intérprete, y el hospital no le ofreció ninguno. Su esposa estaba fuera de sí. “Siento mucha tristeza en mi corazón, porque no sé qué es lo que va a pasar con mi esposo, y no sé cuál sea su estado,” dijo ella a través de un intérprete el 19 de febrero, cuando su esposo estaba en la cama del hospital. “Él está sufriendo mucho en ese lugar… Me dice que viene gente y le dan inyecciones, él quiere saber cuáles son, pero no entiende.” Pasaron dos semanas. Todavía ninguna información de un médico o enfermera en un idioma que pudiera entender Hernández. Lo habían trasladado a otro hospital, pero su esposa ni siquiera sabía el nombre porque no entiende el inglés. Decenas de miles de inmigrantes de México y América Central en California hablan el Mixteco y otras lenguas indígenas. Como los Hernández, muchos de ellos no hablan o entienden bien el Español. Estos inmigrantes que en su mayoría trabajan en la agricultura u otros trabajos esenciales, han luchado durante mucho tiempo para recibir información y servicios médicos en sus lenguas, a pesar de las leyes que obligan a las instituciones médicas a ofrecer interpretaciones en persona o a través de un servicio telefónico, según defensores. “Entendemos que estos son tiempos difíciles y nuestro sistema de salud también está teniendo dificultades con la pandemia en general. Pero la pandemia ha expuesto todos los problemas acerca del acceso a servicios comunitarios,” dijo el director ejecutivo del CBDIO Sarait Martinez. Literalmente, en estos tiempos es una situación de vida y muerte.” Una parte del problema es que los hablantes de lenguas indígenas muchas veces no saben que tienen el derecho de preguntar por un intérprete. Algunos llevan a un familiar que hable inglés o español a las citas. Pero en situaciones médicas, puede ser difícil para esa persona traducir términos médicos complejos, en especial, si el miembro familiar es un niño, como sucede con frecuencia, dijo Marisa Christensen Lundin, la directora legal de California Rural Legal Assistance, un programa de difusión y asesoría legal para los inmigrantes indígenas ubicado en Arvin. También se requiere la traducción de documentos médicos importantes, dependiendo del tamaño de la población que hable esa lengua. California tiene sus propias leyes contra la discriminación que obligan a las agencias a prestar servicios de interpretación y traducción si reciben fondos estatales, como a través del programa de seguro de salud Medi-Cal.

En otras ocasiones, los servicios de interpretación sí están disponibles, pero los empleados del hospital no están entrenados para accederlos, López agregó. But he and his wife, Marcelina Hernandez Lopez, had so many questions. What medications was he being given? How was the virus affecting his body? And, most importantly: Would he survive?

Other non-English speakers are also struggling to get intelligible information and services during the pandemic. Justice in Aging and the Center for Medicare Advocacy recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of two community-based organizations in Los Angeles that work with older adults who speak limited English. These organizations have seen a surge in seniors who speak Chinese and other languages seeking help booking COVID-19 vaccine appointments, according to the lawsuit.

No one at Mercy Hospital Southwest in Bakersfield spoke the couple’s language, Mixteco, an indigenous language from southern Mexico. Hernandez, 62, didn’t know he had the right, under state and federal law, to request an interpreter, and the hospital didn’t offer him one. His wife was beside herself. “I feel a lot of sadness in my heart, because I don’t know what’s going to happen to my husband, and I don’t know what his condition is,” she said through an interpreter on Feb. 19, as her husband lay in a hospital bed. “He’s suffering a lot in that place … He tells me people come and give him injections, he wants to know what they are, but he doesn’t understand.” Two weeks passed. Still no information from a doctor or nurse in a language Hernandez could understand. He had been transferred to another hospital, but his wife didn’t even know the name because she doesn’t understand English. Tens of thousands of Mexican and Central American immigrants in California speak Mixteco and other indigenous languages. Like the Hernandez’, many don’t speak or understand Spanish well. These immigrants, who work mostly in agriculture and other essential jobs, have long struggled to get medical information and services in their languages, despite laws requiring medical facilities to offer interpretation in-person or through a dial-in service, advocates said. Now, with COVID-19 disproportionately impacting these immigrant communities, the language disconnect is creating major challenges for patients and their families as they try to navigate virus-related medical care. “It creates a lot of stress — not understanding the procedures, worrying they’re going to die, and not knowing what’s happening with their health, or what the doctor’s opinion is,” said Arcenio Lopez, executive director of the Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) in Ventura County, home to an estimated 20,000 people who identify as Mixtec. “There’s more risk of medical negligence when there is no clear communication between the patient and the providers,” he continued. “They might be treating something different they think the patient has, but the patient might have important information about their own body or health.” Indigenous Californians have had difficulties getting information in their languages throughout the pandemic. At testing sites and medical facilities, there is often no translation available, according to community organizers. At MICOP, people have turned up at the organization’s offices in Oxnard asking for help translating their COVID test results, potentially exposing staff members to the virus, Lopez said. In Monterrey County, the Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indígena Oaxaqueño (CBDIO), which serves indigenous immigrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, noticed community members were struggling to get tested for COVID-19. Staff members called 15 testing sites in the county’s farmworker-heavy Salinas Valley to ask if they offered Mixteco interpretation. Only

“We understand that these are dire times and our health care system is also struggling with the pandemic in general. But the pandemic has continued to highlight all these issues about our community accessing services,” said CBDIO Executive Director Sarait Martinez.“Literally in these times it’s a life and death situation.”

In an emailed statement, Chad Burns, a spokesman for Dignity Health, which Bakersfield’s two Mercy Hospitals are affiliated with, acknowledged the lack of Mixteco interpretation at the hospitals.

Part of the problem is that indigenous language speakers often don’t know they have a right to ask for an interpreter.Some bring an English or Spanish speaking family member to appointments. But in medical situations, it can be hard for that person to interpret complex medical terms, especially if the family member is a child, as is often the case, said Marisa Christensen Lundin, legal director of an outreach and legal advocacy program for indigenous immigrants at California Rural Legal Assistance in Arvin. The situation “is just so accepted that no one comes in to complain about it,” she said. Yet, “I could call any one of my 90 clients right now, and I can promise you that none of them have received interpreters at the hospital.” People have a civil right under federal law to access services in their language if the agencies providing the service receive federal funds, which most health care facilities do. Providers can meet these requirements by training bilingual staff or contracting with trained, qualified interpreters such as through a telephone service or community organization that provides professional interpreting services. Translation of important medical documents is also required, depending on the size of the population that speaks that language. California has its own anti-discrimination laws that also require agencies to provide interpreting and translation services if they receive state funds, such as through the Medi-Cal health insurance program. Jan Emerson-Shea, a spokesperson for the California Hospital Association, said she wasn’t aware of any problems with language interpretation at hospitals, and was not familiar with Mixteco specifically. She said hospitals do provide language interpretation. “All of our hospitals provide those services,” she said. “California is a large and very diverse state with lots of languages that are spoken, and hospitals make arrangements to make sure they have language services available to meet the

Providers may also erroneously assume that patients speak Spanish because they’re from Latin America. Even when indigenous language speakers do ask for an interpreter, they frequently don’t get one, or the interpretation is inadequate, advocates said. Mixteco, the dominant indigenous language in California, has several variants that are mutually unintelligible. A patient may be matched with an interpreter who speaks the wrong variant, rendering the service useless. And commercial over-thephone interpretation companies, which many hospitals use, often don’t have Mixteco interpreters available at all times of day, Lopez said. On other occasions, interpretation services are available, but hospital staff aren’t trained on how to access them, Lopez added. He cited a recent example in which a Mixtec woman reported visiting two hospitals in Ventura County that have contracts with MICOP to provide interpretation, but she still didn’t get an interpreter. The situation is exacerbating mistrust in the health care system, Lopez and others said. Maura Salazar, 66, a Mixteco speaker who lives in Lamont, said many people she knows have avoided going to the hospital even when they’re very sick with COVID-19 because they’re worried no one will understand them or they won’t be treated well. “They were afraid to go because of a rumor they wouldn’t get out,” said Salazar through a Spanish speaking interpreter. “They say there are interpreters in the hospital that speak Mixteco, but

Even Spanish speakers have struggled to obtain vaccine information. Rosa Lazarovits, a Venturabased marriage and family therapist who works mainly with Latinx seniors, said many of her patients have expressed panic over not knowing how to get vaccinated. The county does have an online portal with vaccine information in Spanish. But many seniors don’t know how to navigate the internet, she said. “They’re very stressed out,” said Lazarovits. “I see and hear a lot of stress and a lot of anxiety, not just because of COVID, but because of the lack of information. It’s like a double whammy.” To ensure people with limited English proficiency get the information and care they need during the pandemic and beyond, health care systems and government entities need to step up collaboration with immigrant community groups to get the word out about public health issues, Martinez said. Her organization is planning a campaign focused on educating hospitals and health care providers about their legal responsibility to provide interpretation, and to inform indigenous language speakers of their right to request an interpreter. Hospital administrators need to plan in advance how to provide interpretation for languages such as Mixteco, by identifying the variants spoken in the local area, and partnering with community-based organizations to find appropriate interpreters, said Christensen Lundin. Hospital staff must then be trained on how to summon the right interpreter if a patient needs one, she added. “You need to proactively plan,” she said. “You’re not going to do a great job serving people if what you’re doing is reacting three minutes (after) someone told you they had a language need and you’re scrambling to figure it out.” After a two-week hospital stay, Ernesto was released this week to continue his recovery at home in Arvin. The worst is over, said his wife, Hernandez Lopez. But she worries that others Mixteco speakers in her community will face the same anguish they did. She said she had a message for the hospital: “Look for interpreters who speak Mixteco.”

OVATO, Calif. -- The city of Novato voted this week on whether to allow Costco to build a huge new gas station, despite strong opposition from locals concerned about climate change. Novato is the latest front in a battle to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Lily Cohen, mobilizing team lead for the nonprofit 350 Bay Area, said projects such as this fly in the face of local and state climate goals. "The more gas infrastructure we have, the more time it would take later on down the road to take down that infrastructure and proceed forward with newer, cleaner, greener infrastructure," Cohen contended.

"We shouldn't be expanding fossil-fuel infrastructure in the time of a 21st-century climate crisis where we're experiencing consequences, like the unprecedented wildfires that we've had up here in the North Bay," Hastings argued. Last month the city of Petaluma took a big step toward decarbonization "February 22nd, they enacted the first prohibition against gas stations in the United States, and we're hoping this will start other local governments to follow suit," Hastings concluded.

passive solar house is typically designed from scratch factoring in several considerations to boost the structure’s ability to naturally keep the interior living spaces a comfortable air temperature without using conventional emissions-spewing HVAC appliances. The concept hinges on having lots of insulation, no air leaks, and large, strategicallyoriented south-facing windows that “collect” heat energy (in the form of sunlight) during the day and store it in “thermal mass” (concrete slabs, brick walls, tile floors or other building materials with heat retention capacity). This stored solar energy is then naturally distributed throughout the interior space by natural convection caused by ventilation and the dynamics of colder and warmer air reacting differently to gravity. While the concept has been kicking around since at least the 1950s, it wasn’t until 1991 that Dr. Wolfgang Feist, an Austrian physicist and subsequent founder of the Passivhaus Institut, turned the dream into a reality with the design and construction of the world’s first passive solar house in Darmstadt, Germany. This three-story home was designed from the ground up with thick walls and copious amounts of efficient insulation, and no holes large or small where hot air could escape. The Feist house was also designed to be free of any potential “thermal bridges,” where heat could travel through walls to get outside, unlike conventional homes which are framed with wood 2x4s and 4x4s with insulation laid or sprayed in between. Conventional framing typically comprises about 25 percent of the interior walls’ surface area. Unlike the insulation around it, the framing sections provide zero insulation value and therefore act as thermal bridges whereby hot air can escape. Passive houses, on the other hand, are designed with solid slabs or with denser framing materials to cut off this insidious form of heat loss. Siting is also a major design consideration for any passive solar house. Picking a spot that can harvest lots of sunlight (via large southfacing triple-glazed windows) and also take advantage of neighboring shade (like large trees and buildings) to cool the structure off in the heat of summer is also key. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to the building’s success in maintaining consistently comfortable indoor air temperatures without electricity or gas/oil no matter the weather outside. Another important aspect of the passive solar design is the incorporation of some kind of heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system that can let fresh air into the building without letting any of the heat out. Given all of the design, siting and construction factors involved, it’s usually not practical to convert a pre-existing conventional house into a passive solar one. But that said, there’s no reason not to upgrade what you can at home to at least take advantage of increased efficiencies where it’s easy and get as close to passive solar as possible. n Feb. 25 evening, a man scaled the wall of the 117-year-old Higashi Honganji Buddist Temple in Los Angeles County’s ‘Little Tokyo’ neighborhood and set fire to two wooden lanterns at the entrance to the temple, then knocked two metal lanterns off their stands, and finally threw a rock that shattered a plate glass window, as documented in surveillance camera footage.

The staff at the restaurant would not help. Lee phoned 911. Police officers arriving at the scene cited the lack of a crime and did not take a police report. “There was a lack of empathy and compassion,” said Lee, adding later that she continues to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and was afraid to leave her house for several months.

No one was hurt, said Bishop Noriaki Ito, who serves as the temple’s head priest. Speaking at the "LA vs. Hate - Stop AAPI Hate Press Conference" press briefing March 8 morning, Ito said he does not yet know whether the incident will be investigated as a hate crime. “Our immediate response was anger and hurt. But then we leaned on our Buddhist teachings to find compassion,” said the bishop, adding: “We are working to create a community of friends.” The vandalism at the temple is the most recent of a string of anti-Asian American incidents which have been sweeping the country over the past year. The web portal Stop AAPI Hate, an initiative of the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, has logged 250 incidents in Los Angeles County over the past 12 months. Nationwide, over 2,800 hate incidents — including violent attacks against elderly Asian Americans — have been reported on the Stop AAPI Hate portal. Advocates at the briefing said that number represented an under-count: most anti-Asian hate incidents go unreported. On March 9, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted on a motion to expand the LA vs Hate initiative and the Rapid Response Network, both of which support victims of hate crimes and incidents with support and resources, including men-

The motion is sponsored by LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis. “The situation has got worse over the past year. California — the bucolic burb which served as the backdrop for Rachel Bloom’s comedy series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” — said she lived in a “wonderful community” that had nonetheless experienced hate. Over the past year, one nearby family has kept up a persistent attack on her family and her neighbors.

Lee advised people to take a video, if possible, and to attempt to de-escalate the situation. She asked people who witness a hate crime to speak to the offender, and also to provide emotional support. “People have had acid thrown at them; faces have been slashed,” she stated emotionally.

Shen was bitten by the family’s dog, when out on a walk with her dog; the racist family set up a fight between the two dogs, she said. “They told me they were going to eat my dog,” said Shen, who still suffers scars from the dog bites.

Other speakers at the press conference were: Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón; Robin S. Toma, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, and Assistant Director of the Los Angeles County department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services; Manjusha Kulkarni, Executive Director, Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council, and representative of StopAAPIHate; and Fredrick Sykes, former Sheriff’s deputy, Mayor and City Councilmember of West Covina and currently a commissioner of the LACCHR.

Corey Ross, productor de Immersive Van Gogh habla sobre la nueva Exhibición de Arte, única en su especie, que combina una experiencia inmersiva, arquitectónica y multimedia con el trabajo de uno de los grandes pintores en la historia.

Así que tiene un poco de eso, y en realidad al final, es una película. Massimiliano creó un film animado del arte de Van Gogh, tiene cinematografía en él y tiene la exhibición de arte y éstos elementos se mezclan y se entrelazan para crear algo que realmente es una nueva forma de encontrar el arte en una creación.

mmersive Van Gogh es una nueva exhibición de arte experimental que destaca el trabajo de las más celebradas y elusivas figuras del arte.

Llegará a San Francisco el 18 de Marzo, fue diseñado por el director creativo y productor cinematográfico italiano Massimiliano Siccardi con composiciones originales, obra del compositor multimedia italiano Luca Longobardi, quien logra combinar música electrónica experimental con “piano puro, etéreo y simple.”

Y lo que es muy emocionante como productor es el ver cómo el público y el arte interactúan. Ese es el tipo de momento que me emociona. Ser capaz de llevar a la gente, de forma metafórica, de la mano. Y adentrarlos en esto de una forma que es completamente única.

Radicará en el SVN West, la sede anteriormente conocida como el icónico Fillmore West, con 500,000 pies cúbicos de proyección y 90 millones de pixeles iluminando la vida y el trabajo del post-impresionista Vincent Van Gogh. Lo que puedo decir es que creo que, de alguna manera, fuimos muy afortunados de que él escogiera a Van Gogh, porque Van Gogh es uno de los artistas más interesantes para reflexionar y pensar durante el tiempo que estamos pasando con COVID, porque Van Gogh realmente tuvo muchos problemas serios relacionados con sus enfermedades mentales. Pero además de eso, es un proyecto muy distinto e interesante, en el cuál involucrarte como productor. No hay actores ni cantantes, así que no es ese mundo. Pero creo que el desafío es facilitar a los artistas el crear algo que es de verdad único y extraordinario y tiene valor para que el público venga y vea, y quizá es ese el desafío en cada evento. Pero éste es tan inusual, y la gente no entiende qué es lo que irán a ver. Así que es interesante el ver cómo la gente ingresa con expectativas limitadas o la expectativa de algo diferente, y luego salen con ojos grandes, porque de verdad, esta es una forma completamente diferente de encontrarse con el arte, una experiencia completamente nueva. Se ubica en un cruce entre una experiencia y el entretenimiento. Algo con lo que San Francisco está muy familiarizado, con proyectos como el Museo del Helado.

En cada ciudad a la que vamos, seleccionamos uno o más artistas locales y los invitamos a crear un taller en el espacio del Lobby, y crear arte para el público conforme van pasando. Y típicamente es arte al estilo de Van Gogh, y a la gente le encanta. Vienen y pueden conocer y apoyar a un artista local. Somos capaces de soportar artistas locales y lograr esa conexión entre un artista contemporáneo, unos 100-150 años después de que Van Gogh falleció. Diría que, lograr esa conexión entre un artista local, sin importar si es un artista pop o de graffiti, que es lo que tuvimos en Toronto, o tenemos a ésta increíble mujer haciendo arte en Chicago, con un estilo de pintura más clásico. Pero lo que descubrí cuando llegué, simplemente me superó. Es una forma completamente nueva y diferente de encontrar el arte y teniendo algo completamente nuevo, que nunca has visto. Simplemente no te lo puedes perder. Es una experiencia única en la vida, hacia la cual eres completamente virgen. Tienes ojos vírgenes. Nunca has visto algo como esto. Immersive Van Gogh Producer Corey Ross sheds light onto the new, one-of-a-kind art exhibit which blends an immersive architectural and multimedia experience with artwork from one of the greatest painters in history

Well, so the choice of Vincent Van Gogh is Massimiliano's choice. As a producer I had heard about Massimiliano's work in Europe, and then I flew over and saw it and was very excited by his. And so we sat down with him and said, we'd like to help bring your work and this immersive arts concept to America. And we asked him which artist he might start with. And his idea was to do Van Gogh because Massimiliano is very intrigued by Van Gogh - he's done two other Van Gogh [projects] in the past and just thought that he could approach it and bring new things he hadn't done before.

mmersive Van Gogh is a new experimental art exhibition highlighting the work of the most celebrated and elusive figures in art.

Coming to San Francisco on March 18th, it was designed by creative director and Italian film producer Massimiliano Siccardi, with original compositions by Italian multimedia composer Luca Longobardi, who provided a score combining experimental electronic music with “pure, ethereal and simple-seeming piano.” Taking residence at the SVN West, the venue formerly known as the iconic Fillmore West, the site will house 500,000 cubic-feet of projection and 90 million pixels illuminating the life and work of post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. We recently had the chance to speak with the exhibition’s Co-producer Corey Ross of Starvox Entertainment, and he had a lot to explain in terms of why and how the team of Immersive Van Gogh were able to capture a unique and (as the title says) immersive experience for attendees walking through the enlarged and enhanced gallery of moving Van Gogh paintings. The exhibition has had rave reviews in its initial offerings in Chicago and Toronto, with each site being completely different experience than the other. The architecture of the chosen sites for each city bring a whole new angle to the moving art, as each building was selected to act as another facet of the exhibition, becoming part of the projections total experience. Corey, thank you so much again for taking time to talk about the exhibition. I wanted to start off by asking if you could explain what exactly the Immersive Van Gogh exhibition is and how it is presented. Sure. I think the shorthand was, speaking to Americans about immersive Van Gogh is if you've seen episode five of “Emily in Paris” on Netflix, then you know exactly what we're talking about, because there is a shot from inside the immersive show that our creator, Massimiliano Siccardi, created in Paris.

We have projected right into the design on the floor projections [of] social distancing circles. We realize the circle is one of Van Gogh's favorite shapes, so it fits right in. But you'll find a circle to stand in, but you're not confined to that circle. It helps you stay safe and socially distanced from people around you. But people move through. As the circle next to you empties, then you would move into that circle. So, it's another important part of the experience, is that you're moving through the art as it's changing and morphing around you and reacting to the architecture. And that, as briefly as I can handle, is what the Immersive Van Gogh experience is. Could you speak a little bit on how the project initially came together? What specifically led the team to choose Vincent Van Gogh and prompted you to look for him, as the artist to spotlight in this experimental style of exhibition?

Artistically, he was excited by the idea of working on Van Gogh. What I can say is that I think in a way we were very fortunate that he chose Van Gogh because Van Gogh is one of the most interesting artists to reflect on and think about during the time that we're going through with COVID, because Van Gogh really had some serious struggles in his life with mental illness. He was isolated a long time, in self-isolation, and committed suicide; he came to a very sad end. But his art continues to transcend and fascinate people 150 years later. And so to me, that's a bit of a cathartic story and bring some hope to people. You know, something positive can come out of this experience that we're all having collectively. And if there was an artist that would relate to this more than any other its Van Gogh. So again, it wasn't my choice. It was Massimiliano's choice. But I think it was very fortunate and timely that this ended up being the choice. Can you tell me if there were any unique challenges for you as a co-producer with your team on this exhibition during a pandemic? I mean, the big challenge has been COVID and figuring out a way to muddle through and present the show safely during a pandemic is something that's never presented itself before. But beyond that, it's just

But if you haven't seen it, the concept is that Massimiliano takes over a building which has interesting architecture - in our case in San Francisco it's the original Fillmore club where the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin got their start. And it's an amazing building because of its fabulous Arabesque archways. We take over a building. We digitally map the architecture in the building, and then we project on the architecture. So, the architecture of the building itself is part of the art and the whole thing is shaped around the architecture. [Then] the building itself is transformed by the art. Archways and then the floor and columns become animated with the organic pieces of Van Gogh: sunflowers, clouds, mostly organic shapes. We're projecting onto the architecture of the building Van Gogh's art at a massive scale. There's 500,000 cubic feet of projection. There's 90 million pixels. And so, when you come into the environment, you're seeing these pieces blown up to a level that you've never seen them before. If you're if you're what I call a 'technique geek' and you're really interested in sort of observing Van Gogh's technique, his paintbrush movement his speckles of paint - the whole way that he created it, there's no better way to investigate that than seeing it blown up to 30 by 150 feet. But the most interesting part of what Massimiliano is doing is the animation of the work and the choreography of this music. The experience is loosely narrative: [the] point of departure for how we created this show is we wanted to imagine what Van Gogh would have seen flash before his eyes in the moments before he died. So, it tries to capture all of Van Gogh's artistic life, and it feels like a stream of consciousness, and it's all choreographed to an extraordinary soundtrack that a gentleman named Luca Longobardi has put together. The animation itself is interesting in that it, first of all, brings the pieces to life. We have likened 400 images of Van Gogh's art from museums around the world. And then those pieces, you know, there's movement within them for sunflowers swaying in the breeze and clouds go by overhead and stars twinkle, so it's bringing the art to life, but it also deconstructs and reconstructs the art; one piece dissolve and molds into another and becomes another, and they reflect on each other and go back and forth. And all of that to enable this loose narrative and story-

a very interesting and different kind of project to sort of get your arms around as a producer. There's no actors or singers so it's not that world. But I think the challenge is to facilitate the artists in creating something that's truly unique and extraordinary and has value for the public to come and see and that's maybe the challenge in every event. But this one is so unusual, and people don't understand what it is that they're going to see. So it’s interesting to see how people come in with limited expectations or expectations of something different and then come out with their eyes wide because really, this is a completely new way of encountering art, a completely new experience. It somehow sits at the crossroads of, you know, experience and entertainment. Something that San Francisco is really familiar with, with projects like the Museum of Ice Cream. So it has it has a bit of that in it, and really ultimately, it's a film. [Massimiliano's] created an animated film of Van Gogh's art. It’s got filmmaking in it and it's got the exhibition of art and the these [elements] mix and intermingle to create something that really is a new way of encountering art in a new creature. And what's exciting as a producer is to see how the public and art interact. That's kind of the moment that gets me excited. To be able to take people, you know, metaphorically by the hand and welcome them into this and bring them through something that's completely unique. Could you talk a little bit on how you're incorporating the local artists within the exhibition and how that works? In each city that we're going to we're selecting one or more local artists and we invite them to create a workshop in the lobby space and to create art for the public as they come through, and typically that’s Van Gogh inspired art in some way and people just love it. Like they come in and they get to meet someone local and support a local artist. We're able to support local artists and we're able to make that connection between someone contemporary, someone 100-150 years after Van Gogh passed away. I say that to make that connection between a local artist, whether it's a pop artist and graffiti artist, which is what we had in Toronto, or we have this wonderful woman doing art for us in Chicago who is more of a classical painter. But as we select and curate these artists to see how they can interact with Van Gogh's art in Van Gogh's scene, and create something new and unique and specific for a person who is standing in front of them waiting to have a piece of art created for them. Thank you again Corey. My last question essentially boils down to, why would you recommend people come see the Immersive Van Gogh exhibition for themselves? I think, first of all, everybody needs to get out right now. We need to begin to have collective experiences in a safe way, and this is a very safe way of dipping your toe back into this world, which is a world that we've all been missing for the last year and a bit. So that's the first thing, you've got to just get out! The second thing is it's so, so unique. You'll write this up and you still won't capture it.

USTIN, Texas -- Responding to older Texans hit particularly hard by the massive winter-storm power outage last month, AARP Texas and the Texas Legal Services Center are asking for immediate financial relief for residential electricity customers. In a letter to the state's Public Utility Com-

mission, the organizations noted many, including those dependent on Social Security benefits for housing and medicine, found it impossible to leave their homes for days on end. Tim Morstad, associate state director for AARP Texas, said regulators need to step up for consumers now, and not wait until the state Legislature can address ways to prevent a future disaster. "People are still hurting," Morstad asserted. "They're still in need. There's actions that our utility regulators could take to make it easier for consumers." AARP and the Legal Services Center are asking the Public Utility Commission to prioritize relief for Texas consumers over relief for retail electric providers. The Texas power grid manager was fired after the power blackouts and the head of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas resigned. In addition, the state's largest electric cooperative has since filed for bankruptcy protection. It's estimated at least four million residential customers in Texas were without power and heat for days during the sustained subfreezing temperatures. Morstad pointed out AARP has heard from thousands of members about how the storm impacted them. "And how they're trying to put the pieces back together," Morstad explained. "And as we go into these next few weeks it's going to be like, 'And my electricity bill came and it's high and I wish I could get some help for that.'" Morstad argued the Public Utility Commission of Texas needs to allow customers time to address high utility bills and navigate the market to protect themselves. "So far, nothing out of our Legislature or our regulators really speaks to that," Morstad contended. "There has been no lifeline." The storm and power outages have been blamed for more than 40 deaths, and possibly as many as 70.

Brad Hoylman, D-Manhattan, noted that in 2017, Congress lowered federal taxes on corporate profits from 35% to 21%. It was a massive windfall for the wealthiest Americans, many of whom live in New York. "Our state is home to 120 billionaires with over $600 billion in wealth," he said. "We can do better for the most deserving, poor and underserved people in our communities." Hunger-fighting advocates say a state investment of $600 million over the next year would begin to significantly reduce hunger in New York.
