there are more than 3.4 million people living with epilepsy. Epilepsy is one of the four most common neurological disorders, despite its diagnosis and treatment not always occurring with the amount of focus that the disease deserves. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, 30 percent of people living with epilepsy are not in complete control of their seizures and continue to struggle day after day with the imminent threat of having a seizure.

he COVID-19 pandemic has altered our lives in many ways. It is therefore absolutely understandable that many of us have focused our attention and energies on how to keep our families protected, as well as informing ourselves about the safety and efficacy of available vaccines. But it is important to bear in mind that millions of people around us suffer other types of ailments and that there are ways through which we can make a difference in the lives of these people, even save their lives in emergency situations. In the United States, for example,
The good news is that, without neglecting the protections we require during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Epilepsy Foundation has persevered in its efforts to train school personnel, first responders, seniors, and those in charge. caring for others with epilepsy so that they recognize seizures and can properly administer first aid. The Epilepsy Foundation recently launched its free Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification training - - in Spanish and in person or via Zoom. It is the first and only training to offer a certification for the general public to learn how to help and support the millions of people living with epilepsy.
Hispanics are people with a good heart, and we are always ready to help or render first aid to those who need it. In this case, it is a matter of complementing our willingness to help others, with the training and qualification necessary to appropriately respond to an epileptic crisis. In the United States, there are approximately 710,000 Hispanics living with epilepsy. Being empowered and trained to offer a helping hand during a seizure can save that person's life.

ne full year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Now, as Californians wait to be vaccinated, we cannot overlook the fact that COVID-19 continues to claim lives. The current death toll in California surpasses the 55,000 mark. And the sobering reality is that the situation could be even worse if our state is hit by a powerful earthquake during this time of struggle and recovery. Scientists tell us that the risk of a damaging earthquake happening somewhere in our state is very real. Some of the most notable faults in the San Francisco Bay are the San Andreas, Hayward, and Calaveras faults. These faults are capable of causing a damaging earthquake, such as the magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta quake in 1989 that killed 63 people, injured 3,757, and caused more than $5.9 billion in damage. Today, countless homes—our bunkers in this battle against COVID-19, where we are hunkered down and awaiting our turn for a vaccine—might not be strong enough to withstand the next damaging earthquake. More than 1 million houses in California are particularly vulnerable to damage from earthquake shaking because they were built before 1980, when modern seismic building codes were put in place statewide. Just as senior citizens are more susceptible to COVID-19, older houses that have a crawl space may have weaknesses that can cause them to slide off their foundation when the ground shakes—potentially destroying the house or producing damage that can require several years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair. This type of damage happened even in the “moderate” magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Napa in 2014. Significant damage to a house also means displaced residents, who may need to stay in emergency shelters or hotels, or with family or friends, for months or even years. Or they may need to find other permanent housing altogether. Considering that many Californians don’t have earthquake insurance, and that our state already suffers from a shortage of affordable housing, it could be a long road to financial recovery if the worst were to happen and a family was suddenly forced to try to cover all the costs of rebuilding their lives. Many people believe the government will bail them out if an earthquake badly damages their home. This is a false hope. Government assistance, if available, is

extremely limited. Fortunately for these older, more vulnerable houses, there is a solution: a simple seismic retrofit. For many houses, a basic retrofit that costs between $3,000 and $7,000—and can even be done by a skilled do-it-yourselfer—can help prevent this devastating damage from happening in the first place. The work simply consists of bracing the walls in the house’s crawl space and bolting it to the foundation—a project that can be done in a day or two. Learn more about vulnerable houses and how to strengthen them at www.StrengthenMyHouse.com. Many communities in California have high concentrations of vulnerable, older homes: More than 80 percent of the housing units in San Francisco County and nearly 75 percent in Los Angeles County were built before 1980. Retrofitting older homes on a large scale in these communities will be necessary to develop “herd immunity”—resulting in the entire community becoming more seismically resilient by shoring up the vulnerable homes throughout. We cannot stop the next earthquake from happening, nor can we dictate when or where it will strike. But we can “flatten the curve” regarding the amount of heartache and loss that earthquake will produce. Owners of older homes need to consider “vaccinating” their vulnerable home now, before it is too late, by looking into a seismic retrofit. Seismically retrofitting an older house is like the homeowner receiving a COVID-19 vaccine—a retrofit significantly strengthens the immunity of that home to help prevent catastrophic earthquake damage. And unlike the COVID-19 vaccine, no one needs to wait in line to make that happen. Glenn Pomeroy is CEO of the California Earthquake Authority.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- This week, millions of California kids will step into classrooms for the first time since the pandemic started a year ago. Even so, advocates for public education say the state can't let the quality of distance learning deteriorate. A large number of families are choosing to delay their children's return to in-person classes.
that if they were to get COVID-19, and be unable to continue to care for the child, that there isn't a backup plan for that child," Lent explained. "So, they're big decisions, they're difficult decisions." Many see support for distance learning as an equity issue. Pew Research Center data show the highest share of multigenerational households are Asian and Latino families, at 29% and 27%, respectively.
Jaia Peterson Lent, deputy executive director of the National Center on Grandfamilies, said that's especially true of multigenerational families where grandparents are the caregivers.
The publication Business Insider looked at census data and found California has more than three-quarters of a million multigenerational households. That's the second-highest share in the country, at 5.77%.

E. Toby Boyd, president
of the California Teachers Association, predicted the new stimulus package signed by President Joe Biden last week will help school districts optimize distance learning. "Well, it's going to assist in making sure the connectivity, the equipment, is going to be there," Boyd remarked. "So it's going to take a while to build up. But with the resources now, they're going to have that opportunity to make sure it is occurring." A survey done last fall in the Los Angeles Times showed a huge gap between rich and poor areas, in terms of students' ability to thrive during distance learning. So, school districts have made a huge push to issue free laptops and Wi-Fi devices to needy families.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.

ORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon could do a better job setting up high school students for careers once they graduate, according to a new analysis. The Alliance for Excellent Education examined state policies for promoting career readiness after high school. Anne Hyslop, assistant director of policy development and government relations at the Alliance, said many states have taken a good first step, enabling students to get onto career paths before they graduate.
Hyslop explained with the pandemic forcing schools to shut their doors last year, states made modifications to their graduation requirements. "Now is actually a really good opportunity, I think, to reassess and to make sure that the policies we have are actually serving all students well and that there aren't student populations who are falling through the cracks," Hyslop concluded. Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.

ORTLAND, Ore.
"But there isn't this differentiation of a pathway for students who might be interested in STEM careers or a pathway for students who want to go into the military, which are things that other states have done," Hyslop observed. Hyslop pointed out some states also offer career seals on diplomas for completing certain steps, such as workplace internships.

She pointed out the state's graduation system essentially is the same for all students, meeting basic credit-hour requirements and demonstrating they have certain essential skills.
USA MASCARILLA.
PROTEGE A TU COMUNIDAD.
However, Hyslop noted many still lack measures of quality for these tracks.
She added high school diplomas no longer are enough to guarantee a job and schools should take the opportunity to expose students to different careers in high school.
In total, 19 states offer a graduation pathway to prepare students for careers.
"Students who do these pathways are doing other experiences during high school that are deliberately preparing them for future success," Hyslop stressed. "And so I think it helps make the high school experience more relevant, more enriching, can help students engaged in the classroom." Keeping students in high school has been especially important in Oregon. In recent years, it's ranked near the bottom among states for its graduation rate.

The measure also provides $135 billion to help schools safely reopen, $350 billion to support vaccination efforts, and another $350 billion to help state and local governments recover from a ruinous year. An expanded child tax credit of $300 a month per child — which will be available as a direct monetary payment each month — will lift half of the nation’s 11 million low-income children out of poverty. Relief is also provided for renters who were unable to make payments amid the pandemic, and also for small landlords. The measure provides also provides grants for small businesses: more than 160,000 mom and pop ventures have closed down permanently amid the pandemic. But the measure falls short in relief for undocumented immigrants, who will not receive the $1,400 stimulus checks. And, despite having put money into the unemployment insurance program via payroll taxes, undocumented immigrants do not qualify for unemployment relief. “We have to spend this money to make sure we have economic growth,” said Biden March 11 after signing the bill into law. He added that the relief measure will create seven million new jobs. “It changes the paradigm. For the first time in a long time, this bill puts working people in this nation first,” said the President. The measure passed both the House and Senate with almost no Republican support. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, criticized the measure as “bloated,” and stuffed with sops that had no relationship to COVID relief. He noted that the bill was passed even as money from the last round of $900 billion stimulus funding had not been spent. But Democrats disagreed. Speaking at a March 12 Ethnic Media Services briefing, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Illinois, said: “This is a game changer. This package of measures will help our economy heal. It is a big win for the American people.” One of the biggest components of the relief bill, the fight which Krishnamoorthi spearheaded, was aid to state and local governments. “Unfortunately my pleas with regard to this type of aid fell on deaf ears in the Trump Administration. Thankfully, Joe Biden has thought better of this issue.” Krishnamoorthi said local aid was necessary because sales tax revenues and other sources of tax revenue have declined dramatically for many states, cities, and towns, forcing them to reduce services and staff. “I have Republican mayors who are contacting me, saying: Look, we need the revenue. We need a way to avoid laying off further police and firefighters and what you did in Washington was terrific, but can you do more?” So this is not a blue issue versus a red issue. This is an American issue,” said the congressman. Addressing the bi-partisan divide on the relief bill, Krishamoorthi said: “I'm reminded of the that old saying - ‘Republicans just say no but take the dough.’ It's interesting how many of my colleagues voted no, but they're going to be gladly accepting the aid on behalf of their jurisdictions and those jurisdictions are going to benefit immensely from this help.” Other speakers at the March 12 EMS briefing included Chad Stone, chief economist at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities; Elaine Maag, principal research

he $1.9 trillion COVID relief package signed into law March 11 by President Joe Biden, offers benefits for almost every American, but — once again — leaves out undocumented immigrants, millions of whom have been essential workers during the national crisis. The measure, known as the American Rescue Plan, offers a new round of $1,400 stimulus checks to individuals earning less than $80,000. It also extends unemployment relief — which was set to expire March 14 — to Sept. 6, allowing millions of jobless people to get an additional $300 per week in federal benefits in addition to state unemployment compensation. People who received unemployment last year do not have to pay federal taxes on the first $10,000 they received in unemployment relief.

Photo Credit: Elias Shariff Falla Mardini / Pixabay associate at the Urban Institute; and Sekou Siby, executive director of Restaurant Opportunities Center United. Maag said one of the groups that would most benefit from the new law are low-income children. 14 percent of American children live in poverty; the relief bill would cut that to 7 percent. The rates of poverty are higher for Black children at 18 percent; and Hispanic children, at 22 percent. “Poverty harms children throughout their lives: early brain development is disrupted, leading to slower and stunted growth,” said Maag. She noted that children who grow up in poverty are less likely to graduate from high school or attend college. Employment and health are tenuous throughout their lives. Maag added that the two-year measure is unlikely to end cyclical, generational poverty, but is a start. Stone challenged the Labor Department’s tabulation of the unemployment rate, currently 6.2 percent — about 10 million people — and said a more accurate number would be about 9 percent. Incoming Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last month that unemployment rates could be as high as 10 percent, as millions of people dropped out of the workforce during the pandemic. Pre-pandemic, unemployment rates were 3.5 percent. Last July, however, as businesses shot down, unemployment skyrocketed to 16 percent, with 32 million people out of work. The new unemployment relief measures are set to expire Sept. 6. Stone said he would like to see members of Congress return to the bargaining table before they go on their summer break in August. “They should be looking at economic conditions and deciding whether it's reasonable to allow these benefits to expire on Sept. 6, or whether they should do something to further extend them,” he said. Job losses have been most dramatic among lowwage earners. 31 percent of all industries with the lowest average wages at the start of the recession have accounted for 55 percent of the 8.1 million privatesector job losses over the past year, said Stone. Siby of ROC United advocated for a rise in the minimum wage; a hotly-contested debate in Congress to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour was left out of the final version of the bill. 78 percent of the nation's 27.1 million service workers are women, people of color, and immigrants. Over one third of the nation's service workers do not earn enough to consistently make ends meet, he said. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Restaurant workers, who earn a portion of their wage in tips, are paid about $2.31 per hour. Siby compared the cost of living to income: a single mother of one child in Mississippi would need $26 per hour to live, but earns only $7.25. In California, using the same scenario, a single mother would need $40 per hour to make ends meet, yet earns just $12. “We have a huge gap between what people need to live on and what they are actually receiving and this is why the dependency on government subsidy is so high now,” he said. Minimum wage raises would not adversely impact small business owners, who are accustomed to working in low profit margins, said Siby. He also said it was possible to raise minimum wages even amid the pandemic, as the proposed plan which failed would have annually raised wages incrementally.

PG&E
AN FRANCISCO, Calif.
AN FRANCISCO, Calif. — With utility scams on the rise during the current pandemic, it is more important than ever for customers to be vigilant and to know what steps to take to prevent themselves or their families from falling victim. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers have gotten deceptively creative and increased calls, texts, emails, and in-person tactics and are contacting electric and gas customers asking for immediate payment to avoid service disconnection. These impostors can be convincing and often target those who are most vulnerable, including senior citizens and low-income communities. They also aim their scams at small business owners during busy customer service hours. However, with the right information, customers can learn to detect and report these predatory scams. As a reminder, PG&E will never contact a customer for the first time within one hour of a service disconnection, and will never ask customers to make payments with a pre-paid debit card, gift card, any form of cryptocurrency, or third-party digital payment mobile applications. Here are some steps customers can take to protect themselves and their families against being victimized: Register for My Account • PG&E reminds customers that they can visit PGE.com and register for My Account. Signing in will provide instant access to balance information, payment history and other account details and will provide a first line of defense against scammers. • If a customer receives a call from someone requesting immediate payment, they can log in to My Account to confirm whether their account is in good standing. • Customers can also call PG&E Customer Service at 800-743-5000 if they think that they are being targeted by a scam. Add a family member to your account • As an added layer of protection, customers can designate family members or another trusted individual to speak on their behalf to PG&E call center representatives. • For example, an elderly parent could authorize an adult child to speak to PG&E on their behalf and make that person their first call should they receive a call threatening disconnection. The adult child could then call PG&E to confirm their account details. • To designate an individual to speak to PG&E on
your behalf, contact 800-743-5000. “Scammers are constantly changing their tactics and tricks, so awareness is more important than ever to keep our customers safe,” said Melisa Munoz, PG&E contact center operations director. “If an email, visit to your home or phone call doesn’t feel right, don’t fall for it. Delete it, shut the door or hang up. And, as a reminder, PG&E will never ask for your financial information over the phone or via email.” Signs of a potential scam • Threat to disconnect: Scammers may aggressively demand immediate payment for an alleged past-due bill. If this occurs, customers should hang up the phone, delete the email, or shut the door. Customers with delinquent accounts receive an advance disconnection notification, typically by mail and included with their regular monthly bill. • Request for immediate payment or a prepaid card: Scammers may instruct the customer to purchase a prepaid card then call them back supposedly to make a bill payment. PG&E reminds customers that they should never purchase a prepaid card to avoid service disconnection or shutoff. PG&E does not specify how customers should make a bill payment and offers a variety of ways to pay a bill, including accepting payments online, by phone, automatic bank draft, mail or in person at an authorized PG&E neighborhood payment center. • Refund or rebate offers: Scammers may say that your utility company overbilled you and owes you a refund, or that you are entitled to a rebate. Again, customers should immediately hang up and call PG&E Customer Service to confirm details. • “Spoofing” authentic numbers: Scammers are now able to create authentic-looking 800 numbers that appear on your phone display. The numbers don’t lead back to PG&E if called back, however, so if you have doubts or have seen any of the above warning signs of a scam, hang up and call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. If customers ever feel that they are in physical danger, they should call 911. Customers who suspect that they have been victims of fraud, or who feel threatened during contact with one of these scammers, should contact local law enforcement. The Federal Trade Commission’s website is also a good source of information about how to protect personal information. For more information about scams, visit www. pge.com and www.utilitiesunited.org. Email Currents at Currents@pge.com.

CA GROUPS PRESS FOR TAX ON EXTREME WEALTH ENGLISH

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Some Democratic lawmakers are pushing for a new state tax on the uber-wealthy, in order to reduce inequality and better fund public services. Supporters want to place a measure on the ballot that would levy a 1% tax on households whose net worth exceeds $50 million, and a 1.5% tax on wealth of more than $1 billion.

ACRAMENTO, Calif.
Asm. Lorena Gonzalez, D-South San Diego, said the money would help create a more just society.

"We create more billionaires than anywhere in the world, and yet we still have people living on the streets," Gonzalez observed. "We still have schools that are underfunded. We still have people that don't have access to health care. All those things cost." Opponents cite the state's current budget surplus and say higher taxes would drive ultra-wealthy entrepreneurs to move out of state. The tax would generate an extra $22.3 billion a year. Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers, noted that during the pandemic, 7.8 million Californians filed for unemployment but billionaires in the Golden State increased their wealth by more than $250 billion. "This raises unprecedented revenue that can finally lower our studentteacher ratio, rebuild our infrastructure, create more green jobs, fend off wildfires, build housing for the homeless and much more," Freitas contended. Gov. Gavin Newsom has said he does not support a proposal to raise taxes at this time. Once the package of bills is filed, it would take a vote of two-thirds of the Legislature to put the wealth tax on the ballot. Then the measure would need a simple majority from voters to pass.

My answer is always the same: 'The best vaccine is the first vaccine you can put on your arm,'" said Dr. Illian Shapiro, AltaMed Medical Director of Health and Wellness Education, during this week's press conference. The doctor confirmed that the three immunizations are highly effective and safe. "Within 15 minutes of receiving the vaccine, I had my boss asking me to go back to work," he remembered, laughing. Shapiro explained that, like any other immunization, the vaccine may cause minor redness and temporary pain, which is a normal reaction of the body. “They are minor side effects because the body is learning to protect itself from the disease. It is OK to be afraid but it´s not OK not to ask for more information," said the doctor. “I wasn't sure about getting the vaccine,” confessed Lizbeth Benavides, 27, Special Education teacher and counselor for the Santa Clarita School District. "I never liked shots, and I was also worried because I have a 4-month-old baby, but my mother convinced me to do it." Benavides decided to receive the immunization so she could return to the classroom.
The state of California has expanded its reach to 170 organizations that work directly with disproportionately affected communities, to share information and answer questions from the population. In Detail • There are currently three vaccines available against Covid-19, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. All three options have undergone rigorous testing and are highly effective in preventing severe cases, hospitalization, and death from coronavirus.
Photo Credit: Gedesby1989 / Pixabay “The truth is that the shot only bothered me for five minutes. I've been working at the school since February,” she added. Regarding the availability of vaccines, Dr. Tomás Aragón, Director and Officer of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) explained that as the supply of available vaccines increases, the requirements will also be expanded so that more people can receive them. "Eligibility is going to change very soon, once more people of 65 and up, agricultural, essential and health workers and educators receive their
vaccines," said Dr. Aragón. Doctors and experts also agreed on the importance of maintaining safety protocols, the use of masks and social distance, until the entire population has been immunized. When can I get the vaccine? “In the state of California, already 10.3 people have been vaccinated, which translates to almost one in three Californians,” noted Yurina Melara Valiulis, Public Information Officer for the Vaccinate California Campaign. 54 percent of
• The three available vaccines were tested among members of different ethnic communities. For example, 45.3% of Johnson & Johnson vaccine clinical trial participants identified themselves as Hispanic / Latino; 19.4% as black or African American; 9.5% as American Indians or Alaska Natives; 3.3% Asian and 5.6% as multiracial. • To determine your eligibility, get in the waiting list, and get your shot visit https://myturn.ca.gov/, or call 1-833-422-4255

OWER BRULE, S.D. -- The U.S. government now has its first Native American serving in a Cabinet leadership post. Rep. Deb Haaland, D-N.M., was confirmed as Interior Secretary in a Senate vote on March 15th, and a South Dakota tribal leader is expressing great optimism as she steps into the role. The Interior Department manages the nation's natural resources and cultural heritage, and oversees the federal government's relationship with Native American tribes. Neil "Cody" Russell, Vice Chair of the Lower Brule Tribal Council, thinks she will be a powerful force in Washington for those who consistently have been overlooked. "I think she'll make some pretty good decisions for the Natives in and around the United States," Russell remarked. He explained he's confident Haaland will be a fierce defender of environmental concerns among tribes, including fossil fuel projects. President Joe Biden already has canceled a key permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline, but faces pressure to intervene in the Dakota Access Pipeline as well. Haaland faced opposition from a number of GOP senators, including those from oil-producing states, who say she has "radical" opposition to new oil and gas leases. Russell countered it's reassuring to have someone who Natives feel will respect and honor treaties with tribal governments. He hopes it leads to more positive movement in lands being reclaimed. "Give the [American] Indians a chance, the Natives a chance in what they were supposed to receive through treaties but
didn't," Russell argued. Some of Haaland's opponents have described her views and policies as partisan, but her supporters note during her short time in Congress, she introduced many bills that received bipartisan backing. South Dakota's two U.S. senators, both Republicans, voted against her nomination.

Q&A: EDGAR RAMÍREZ Y EL “YES DAY”

Me encantan.

Q&A: EDGAR RAMÍREZ AND THE “YES DAY” Positive family dynamics, inclusion, and gender equality are embedded into this kinetic family comedy
T
Arturo Hilario El Observador
derful, even scary because I had never done comedy and doing comedy is a very serious job, but because it is completely different from what I had done before. But I loved it, and the kids were wonderful. I'm not Dad, I have no children yet, but but I'm a very involved uncle, very present in the lives of my nephews and I believe a lot in the family, defend it a lot.
he new Netflix film “Yes Day” asks the question, “What would your children do if you couldn’t say ‘no’ to them for a day?”
Parents Allison and Carlos Torres (Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramírez) are wound up with work and home, and the idea of giving the kids and in some ways themselves a ‘yes day’ – in which they give themselves the freedom to do whatever fun things they want for 24 hours – becomes a reality as the Torres parents give into the idea and hilarity ensues. I spoke to Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramírez recently about his opinion on “Yes Day” and how his experience on participating in his first comedy went, and it included the importance of diversity to the crew and Producer Jennifer Garner by including Puerto Rican director Miguel Arteta and speaking Spanish in the film, the connection to Ramírez’s inability to see his own family in Venezuela, and the how adults should also release tension through ‘yes days’. Thank you very much for taking the time to talk about “Yes Day”. To start, I wanted to find out what interested you about the script and the story of this movie. There are several things. I find the concept of a ‘yes day’ fascinating. I find the theme of ‘yes day’ incredible as a therapeutic tool. Because in addition, without wanting to spoil things so that people can really enjoy it when they see it, when people see the film, they will realize that ‘yes day’ is not just an activity that should be done from parents to children. It is a wonderful tool for any relationship that is important to you. It can be your relationship with your partner or your relationship with your parents, with your coworkers, with yourself, because basically it has to do with exercising flexibility to somehow release tension, soften it; to also restore the balances that is irretrievably lost in the day to day [life] and the dynamics of any relationship, even with yourself When you concentrate only on work, work, work, work, you think about that until you are completely destroyed. When are you going to take a little vacation or take a moment to leave, or walk or take a hike? I mean, that kind of detail seems wonderful to me. And obviously also the wonderful invitation from Jennifer Garner, who is basically the culprit of all this. She was the one who invited me to make this movie and I feel very grateful because not only [have] I gained a wonderful experience doing my first comedy, but I have also gained a close friend and a person who is very important today in my life. And can you tell me a little about your role of Carlos Torres, who is the father in the movie? Yes, well, Carlos is a lawyer of Venezuelan origin living in California, who met Alison, fell in love, got married. He was always very, very open to adventure together with her, because they were both adventurers and once the children are born and they start having to make plans to create the structures that allow you to educate your children. Suddenly he was afraid to become the unpopular dad and left all of that, especially the role of the 'bad cop' to his wife and basically his journey in the film is to understand that as long as you can be loving with your children, you also need to get involved in education and to get involved in the structure and guidance that children hopelessly need. And that is a dynamic is one that I found very interesting within the film, because normally in these types of films that are at first sight family comedies, the focus is on the children, that is, from parents to children. And I think that one of the peculiarities that this film has that caught me is that it explores the dynamics within the couple. There is a love story within the film, which is the restoration of balance between
Any type of family, the concept of family is something that I think of, be it the family in which we grew up, in which we were born or the family we choose, because I also believe a lot in the concept of family. I chose from any type of family, however structured, whether traditional or not, it is something that is very important to me. Even a grandmother and a grandson are a family. A dad with his children in a family. Two dads, two moms, everyone. The concept of family for me is very, very important. And for me, it is also due to political issues and the situation in my country, in Venezuela. I was separated from my family for so long, forced to separate from [them]. Photo Credit: Netflix
Allison, the character played by Jennifer Garner, and my character who is Carlos. The incredible role of raising children and educating children is a role that must be shared equally within families that have more than one father or that have more than one mother. Do you understand when, when there are two parents or two, or two or more than two representatives, that role needs to be distributed? One cannot always be the bad cop and the other good cop, because there is tension. And we see that tension in the film and it is part of what the 'yes day ' helps to solve.
In Latin America we usually see a lot of that, the theme of which the mother is always responsible in establishing structures and often fathers who almost become another child to raise. And I find it very important that the film in a fun way, in a fresh way, it perhaps opens a space for discussion and reflection on the issue of gender equality in the role of parenting. What is it like working on a comedy in general and working with children and the stunts? And how does that compare to other work you've done like "The Undoing"? It's my first time doing a comedy and it was won-

This film is a way of celebrating that also, [the] love that I feel for my family and for the concept of family in general. That’s a great perspective. Additionally, could you speak on a favorite scene from the movie? The truth is, and with this I do not want to sound like a demagogue, I loved them all because in fact I joke with Jennifer and tell her that I believe that she and Miguel Arteta, our wonderful director, who is also Latino, I believe that They consulted with someone who knew me closely and then and then they offered me the script because, for example, one of the things I like the most in life is eating ice cream. I am a professional eater, that is, obviously I am not going to recommend that they eat the amount of ice cream that I ate [in the move] because I ate it, because I am a professional. But it was wonderful. That was my childhood fantasy since forever. To arrive and to be given massive quantities of ice cream without stopping. I didn’t imagine that at last I would fulfill that fantasy. There is nothing that I like more than an amusement park, than a Six Flags. I love rollercoasters. Since I had my first car I always imagined, always fantasized, and I think that happens to everyone, with rolling down the window to see what would happen. And so I had a lot of fun making the movie, I really liked all the scenes. And speaking of the family, the movie and even the Latino director, do you think it is important to see a diverse family in something as accessible as a family comedy? Completely, completely. In fact, that was established from the beginning of this movie. Jennifer and Miguel told me that they were very clear, that they wanted the father in the film, the father of the family, to be of Latino origin. In other words, you are simply in any city in California and basically, we live in one of the most diverse states in the United States and one of the most diverse places in the world. The film does nothing but reflect the reality in which we live, the world in which we live. And obviously representation is very important - and it is very important that every day the stories in film and television in the mainstream media represent and reflect the daily reality in which we live. I live in Los Angeles and I spend half of my day speaking Spanish. In other words, I speak Spanish and English constantly, I switch from one language to the other. It is completely natural. And for us it was also important to speak in Spanish, [and] speak in Spanish with the children. I believe that this country was forged precisely in the cultural richness, product of diversity, of people who came from many parts of the world to be this better country and I find it very nice that a film like this in a completely organic way, transmits it, reflects it. "Yes Day" is streaming now on Netflix.
