HOW AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP KIDS ON A SCHEDULE DURING SCHOOL CLOSURES

CÓMO Y POR QUÉ ES IMPORTANTE MANTENER A LOS NIÑOS EN UN HORARIO DURANTE EL CIERRE DE LA ESCUELA

ENGLISH

S

StatePoint

chool closures have forced families nationwide to readjust to the current reality. However, a sense of structure is important for children’s developmental growth. To create a routine for your kids that sticks, consider the following tips: • Just because there is no formal school day doesn’t mean kids should sleep in or stay up late at night. Keep the same bedtimes, wake-up routines and mealtimes you always maintained during a regular school week. Doing so will bookend the mornings and evenings with a sense of normalcy. • Mimic a school day to the best of your ability. Use the distance-learning tools your child’s teachers offer as well as other educational apps and resources to have kids focus on

different school subjects. This will help break up the day into little chunks just as would happen in the classroom. Be sure to build in time for art projects, exercise and music. Most importantly, don’t forget “recess.” If possible, allow children to play in the backyard where they can socially distance from neighbors, or set up an area of your home for playtime. • Evenings are a good time to relax and unwind together. Play board games, watch your children’s favorite movies or even use the many resources available online to enjoy a virtual walking tour of a museum, botanical garden or zoo. This is also a good time to allow children to connect with their friends using video chat or with family members they are not currently able to see in-person. • For many children, screens are their greatest distraction.

For this reason, one of the best ways to ensure your children stay focused on the schedule you create for them is by managing their screen time. During these challenging times, it can be tempting to let your family routine fly out the window. By using new tools such as distance-learning programming and schedule management apps, you can keep kids to a schedule that makes them ultimately happier and healthier.

Álvarez emphasized that with the arrival of the coronavirus in Mexico, tourism, which is the basis for the livelihood of the musicians in this plaza, stopped completely. "When all this is over, we will return with every-

thing," he said. With songs of encouragement, joy and love, the dozens of mariachis who went to the hospital of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER) were positive to the cry of "Garibaldi never dies". And it is that in recent weeks, the Plaza Garibaldi, a place recognized for its party and joy, has been empty, with no customers but with musicians trying to earn a living without great success. "Mexicans face any problem and we sing this time we organized to come to the hospital. We have always been in earthquakes or emergencies, situations in which we try to lead this life with optimism singing," said musician Mario Luna to Efe, who put of example themes like the mythical "Cielito lindo". He also added that in a difficult situation it is important to take care of each other and asked that if someone has an event, they will be delighted as long as the sanitary measures are complied with. He also wanted to ask the Mexican government to help them in some way, such as with a loan to cover needs, since many are pulling savings and they are running out. The Government of Mexico decreed the health emergency until April 30, which forces the non-essential economic activities to stop, and urged the population to stay at home, although quarantine is not mandatory so as not to affect the millions of people. employed in informal work. The number of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Mexico, which causes the COVID-19 disease, officially amounts to 2,439 and 125 deaths, according to the most recent report. With their performance today, the musicians emphasized the gratitude to the health personnel while they encouraged the sick and made known their precarious situation for which they need work to continue. During songs like "Cielito lindo" or "El mariachi loco" they were happy despite the situation, which caused them to have to wear a mask and keep their distance during their performance.

Paramedics in Los Angeles are trying a new telehealth program to treat people with mild illnesses on the scene, which saves precious hospital beds for severely ill COVID-19 patients. Sean Ferguson, firefighter specialist with the L.A. County Fire Department, said in cases of mild illness, a nurse practitioner can provide the right level of care. "They can then further evaluate the patient, make their own medical assessment, create a treatment plan and even prescribe medicine to them, thus saving them a trip to the emergency room," Ferguson said. The fire department for the City of L.A. also is participating in the program, which is free to patients and saves them a very expensive trip to the ER. This is one of the first large-scale paramedic telehealth programs in the country to be created in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Ferguson said people call ambulances for non-emergency reasons on a regular basis - sometimes even if they've just run out of a prescription - and that puts a strain on hospitals. "We still encourage people to call 911 if they believe they have a medical emergency," he said, "and then through our medical assessment on scene, we may then conference them in to these nurse practitioners." On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order expanding protections for medical providers that offer telehealth services. Ferguson said the city and county hope to continue the telehealth program long after the current crisis has passed.

EARTHTALK Q&A: ENERGY-EFFICIENT INTERNET USAGE?

transitioned all of its facilities to run on nothing but renewables in 2016, including the nation’s largest data center in Reno, Nevada.

hough our online activity uses no paper, it still consumes quite a lot of energy. Data centers account for much of this energy use. These warehouse-sized buildings contain arrays or “farms” of servers, which are essentially souped-up computers that have many uses, including storing data and supporting all the activity on the internet. They are the hardware behind the proverbial “cloud.”

Like the personal computers we all use, servers require electricity to function. Since internet users can call upon them to provide information at any time, they must remain on 24/7. Furthermore, as with any form of electrical activity, the functioning of this large number of servers packed together in a small area can result in overheating, making the need for cooling an additional energy cost for data center managers.

According to data center provider vXchnge, U.S. data centers alone use over 90 billion kilowatthours of electricity annually—about what 34 coalpowered plants generating 500 megawatts each produce. ComputerWorld magazine reports that the energy consumption of data centers worldwide will likely account for 3.2 percent of global carbon emissions by 2025—about as much as the airline industry—and as much as 14 percent by 2040. In light of all this, finding ways to cut energy use has become a big priority in the industry. One of the simplest strategies is to locate data centers in cool climates, and use outdoor air to counter excessive heating. Alternate options include cooling inlet air by running it underground, or using a nearby water source for liquid cooling. Another issue is separating hot air produced by servers from the colder air used to cool them—no easy task if the servers are all housed together. But there are plenty of cheap solutions. Google, for example, uses low cost dividers from meat lockers for this purpose. Another way data centers can reduce cooling costs is to design servers that can operate at high temperatures without overheating. Recent research shows that servers can operate at much higher temperatures than initially believed without compromising safety or efficiency. But not all data centers are comfortable letting their servers run hot. Other ways to make server farms more efficient include optimizing grid-to-server electrical conversions and reducing the energy required by “sleeping” servers. The good news is the industry is making strides in the right direction. Apple, Facebook and Google all power 100 percent of their data center and other operations with renewables, albeit through the purchase of “renewable energy credits” akin to carbon offsets that air travelers can buy to keep their carbon footprints in check. Microsoft is moving toward 70 percent renewable energy by 2023, while laggard Amazon still only gets about half its data center power from renewables. And Switch, one of the largest U.S.-based data center companies,

With the COVID-19 pandemic creating so much uncertainty and upending so many routines, experts say that focusing on the things within your control is particularly important. “At this particular moment -- challenging as it may be -- it is very important for all of us as individuals to recognize that our actions can and do have a collective impact,” says Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “A lot of people are grieving at this moment. Tragically some are grieving loss of loved ones; but people can also grieve the loss of employment, routines or the ability to be with family and friends. Everyone should know that these feelings are normal, and they should allow themselves to experience them.” Here some simple steps from the AMA to maintain your physical and mental health during the unusual times of COVID-19: 1. Channel your feelings of anxiety or helplessness into action. Practicing physical distancing and making sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds are two steps that protect your health and the health of others. Create a safety action plan for you and your family. Also consider how small gestures – like offering to pick up groceries for an older or at-risk neighbor who may be anxious about leaving home -- can make a big difference. 2. Take care of yourself physically. Get as much sleep as you can, try to include fruits and vegetables into your diet, and make sure you move. With many gyms and parks closed and physical distancing

in place, it may seem harder to work out, so consider options at home, including dancing, to stay active. 3. Create new routines. With more people working from home and/or caring for school-aged children, the daily lives we had before COVID-19 are a distant memory. But building routines -- time for work, time for meals, time for decompressing -- is critical to creating a new normal. In the world today, there are so many things we can’t control, but our schedules are something we can. 4. Take time to turn off social media and the news. It is critical at this moment to know what is happening in the world and to stay connected with family and friends, but if social media and 24-hour news are making you anxious, consume them in doses. 5. Feel your feelings. It’s natural to worry and be afraid at a moment like this. It is also important to remember there are physicians, public health officials at all levels of government, as well as experts in the private sector, working tirelessly to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19. 6. Stay connected. Social media gives us a common connection point during times of isolation, but there is real opportunity at this moment to stay connected via phone calls and video chats with friends, family, and even people you haven’t heard from in a while. Physical distancing is important, but it’s still okay to socialize. 7. If you have children, talk to them in an age-appropriate way, and avoid ascribing feelings to them. Don’t say, “I know you’re scared.” Kids are observant and they’re wise. They may know things are different, but they may not be afraid. Let them know smart people are working on ways to keep us all safe. Model healthy coping.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Two carinsurance giants, Allstate and American Family Insurance, have just announced they'll refund $800 million to the drivers they insure.

"This is only going to happen if state insurance commissioners around the country get involved and encourage all the auto insurance companies to return the money to all of the drivers," he said.

The companies say the rebates are possible because people are driving so much less during the COVID-19 crisis and, thus, collision claims have fallen off dramatically. Other companies say they may follow suit.

He said people also have the right to contact their elected state insurance commissioners to push for action on this issue.

(This authority will allow the personal representative to take any actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consent to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person Files and objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. de que pronto llegará a Beijing, donde trabaja.

uhan, China - Wuhan awoke from a months-long slumber on Wednesday with thousands of people leaving the Chinese city as strict quarantine measures that have kept it sealed for almost 11 weeks were lifted at dawn.

After 76 days of enforced quarantine and amid an atmosphere of contained joy, more than a thousand vehicles chugged along the roads of Wuhan as most of the traffic controls imposed since January were lifted. Despite the lifting of most measures, 15 of the 75 checkpoints that regulated inbound and outbound traffic in the city remained operational on Wednesday, a worker at the toll booths said during a tour organized for the media. Since 23 January, all exits and entry points have been restricted in Wuhan, the capital of the central-eastern province of Hubei, after the Covid-19 epidemic took hold in late December. The authorities now claim to have the outbreak under control, railway services resumed in the three stations of Wuhan, from where the first trains departed. Some were bound for cities like Jingzhou, in the province of Hubei, while others headed for large cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai. According to the state Global Times, ticket sales figures updated as of Tuesday showed that more than 55,000 passengers had already purchased tickets to travel by train, of which 40 percent are destined for Pearl River, where thousands of factories employ migrant workers from the rest of China. "Very happy, very happy, I'm going home," a passenger told EFE while rushing to start her trip to her hometown. Air transport also resumed operations on Wednesday, although on a reduced scale, as the city's airport witnessed a steady, if quiet, trickle of travelers. Many of the passengers sported white protective overalls, including children. At the airport, Zhang is waiting for his flight to his hometown Qingdao, in the east of the country. "I want to return. The epidemic surprised me while in Wuhan, I have not been able to return since then," he tells Efe. A woman covered from head-to-toe in a white protective suit says she is relieved to see the flux of people in the terminal and is hopeful she will soon get to Beijing where she works.

Photo Credit: Unsplash app run on the Alipay and WeChat platforms will be able to purchase tickets. Even after proving they are healthy, passengers still get their temperature checked. The mobile health code app developed by the Chinese authorities establishes three categories: green, yellow and red. A green code guarantees the person is not infected and has not been in close contact with confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases. A yellow code indicates the user should be in home isolation and a red code confirms the holder is a Covid-19 patient and should be in quarantine.

Taxis and transport by ferry and tram will also launch services on Wednesday, as well as coaches for long-distance routes, while medium- and short-distance routes will remain suspended for the time being.

The city of 11 million inhabitants has recorded more than 50,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the end of December, of which 2,571 have died, according to official data.

On Wednesday Wuhan registered one Covid-19 death after China recorded a milestone on Tuesday of zero deaths, the first time since the outbreak began, according to the National Health Commission.

In Wuhan, there are still 445 people infected with the coronavirus of the 1,190 infections in China. Of those infected in the country, 189 patients are in a serious condition and 155 of those are in the capital of Hubei.

"I'm going to Tianjin (in the northeast) first. I wasn’t sure this trip would come to fruition, but for now, everything is going well," the woman adds.

Since the pandemic began, 81,802 people have contracted the virus in China.

Official figures, however, show a very notable improvement of the situation after at least 3,333 people died from the respiratory disease.

Planes will not travel full and will carry around 50 percent of their total capacity to prevent possible infections spreading, despite passengers undergoing extensive health and safety checks before boarding.

Aside from railway connections and air travel, the state news agency Xinhua reported that another 30 bus routes will also resume Wednesday to bring total operating lines to 346, and another subway line will reopen.

However, getting to Beijing will require a stopover, as there are no direct flights to the Chinese capital, airport employees told reporters.

Even though normality is slowly being restored, social distancing is still a priority.

Health authorities said that as of midnight on Tuesday two new Covid-19 deaths were recorded, one in Shanghai (in the east) and the aforementioned one in Wuhan. To date, 715,854 people have been monitored for having had close contact with infected persons. Of those 13,334 remain under observation, and 83 are suspected SARS-CoV-2 infections. On March 12 the Chinese government declared that the peak of transmissions had come to an end in the Asian country.
