2020 presidential election, where Donald Trump lost.

President Joe Biden is absolutely right when he assures us that it is "anti-American" legislation. Denying a glass of water or a snack to an elderly person who has stood in line to vote for more than six hours does not correspond to the moral values of the United States, or of any other country.

hat would you think of a law that established a penalty of up to one year in jail and a $ 1,000 fine for offering food or water to another human being? Believe it or not, it is one of the most controversial provisions of the new Georgia state law, steam approved by the Republican legislature of that state, as part of a series of initiatives sponsored under the false premise that massive voter fraud was recorded in the November

Is it a coincidence that the majority of minority voters, especially Latinos and African Americans, vote for the Democrats?

But it is not all bad news. The tsunami of vote suppression initiatives has sparked pushback from some of America's leading private corporations. The Major League Baseball (MLB) decided to cancel the All-Star Game in Atlanta and move it to the state of Colorado. Other Georgia-based companies such as Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines have expressed their rejection of the new regulations in their state. And a handful of senior African-American executives are leading an effort to add more voices against anti-voting initiatives.

In Texas, for example, Senate Bill No. 7 seeks to limit the early voting period, prohibits the method of voting by car, which has become popular during the pandemic in order to maintain physical distance from other people, limits the number of vote deposit sites and, to top it off, it criminalizes automatically sending vote-by-mail requests. All of these provisions have a clear target audience: minority voters. Both Latinos and African Americans are more likely to vote in person and stand in line than non-Hispanic white voters. With the new additional restrictions proposed to limit the number of votes by mail, voting hours or deposit boxes, it is logical to expect more people to line up or simply stop voting.

However, it is not an isolated case. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, there are currently a total of 55 initiatives aimed at restricting and limiting voting in 24 states across the country. Rightly, many activists agree that this is a deliberate effort to affect the vote of poor minorities, especially Latinos and African Americans.

It is foreseeable that these controversial proposals will reach the Supreme Court of the United States.

LBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Polarization is seen as a growing problem in the United States, and many blame social media. But polls show Americans agree on many hot-button issues - and the divide may be more emotional than ideological. One example is gun control. A majority of Americans polled agree that stricter laws should be enacted for firearms sales. And Rachel Kleinfeld of Santa Fe, a senior fellow with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said there's also some common ground on immigration and abortion. Kleinfeld said she believes polarization is less about ideas and more about emotions that cause people to identify with a "tribe" with similar beliefs. She suggested that curiosity could be the antidote. "It is extremely hard to be curious and to hate at the same time," she said. "When you're curious, it doesn't mean you agree, but it does mean you have to find out more."

According to a recent Gallup poll, 57% of Americans favor tougher gun-control laws, while only 9% want to see fewer gun restrictions and 34% support the status quo.

"Polarization, of course, is not just about young people," she said, "but there is something particular that does seem to be going on with young people about a lack of ability to handle too much complexity in their thinking."

Social scientists often recommend limiting internet and media consumption to avoid hot topics such as economics or politics - and when consuming news, trying to seek out balanced reporting. Kleinfeld said social-media users often gravitate to sites that reinforce their own beliefs,

While it might not be as extreme as sometimes portrayed, Kleinfeld said polarization is worrisome because what we're seeing in America now also has been observed in other countries with extreme violence.

LBUQUERQUE, N.M.

EATTLE, Wash -- This week is Black Maternal Health Week and medical professionals are highlighting disparities in health outcomes. Black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and four to five times more likely when they're over the age of 30. Dr. Patricia Egwuatu, family practice physician at Kaiser Permanente in Seattle, said as a Black woman, she understands this fact personally and connects on a deep level with Black patients on this fear. "It's important to acknowledge this, to see where we are as society, and understand that racism has played a really big part in terms of where we are today when we talk about Black maternal health, and it's important for us as providers to advocate for our patients," Egwuatu contended. Egwuatu cautioned moms-to-be of any race should be on the lookout for a few warning signs.

would help attract more people of color into the medical profession, and added if people don't see others that look like them, they aren't likely to take that career path. "It's that pipeline, it's that mentorship, it's companies recruiting more individuals of color, providing them mentorship when they get into those roles," Egwuatu outlined. "And it's something that I'm passionate about. And I think we just continue to have to work on those issues."

No solo los luchadores usan máscara. Ponte tu mascarilla.

She also advised women to talk to their doctors if they have trouble breathing or swelling in their legs, which could be signs of a blood clot.

Egwuatu noted the lack of Black doctors could be one source of higher mortality rates.

Egwuatu suggested more mentoring in communities of color from a young age

She emphasized headaches that won't go away could be a sign of pre-eclampsia, a disorder that can endanger moms and their babies.

"When you have a physician that is culturally competent or looks like another patient, the patient is at ease," Egwuatu pointed out. "They can communicate what they're feeling, what's going on in their personal life, how it affects their health care."

PAYING TOO MUCH FOR HEALTH INSUR- ¿PAGA DEMASIADO POR UN SEGURO MÉDICO? NUEVOS SUBSIDIOS ANUNCIADOS ANCE? NEW SUBSIDIES ANNOUNCED

ANA B. IBARRA CalMatters

alifornians enrolled in health coverage this year will qualify for substantial savings as $3 billion in federal aid kicks in, including for people who are currently getting no subsidies.

Covered California, the state’s insurance marketplace, on April 12th opened a special enrollment period that allows people to sign up and make use of federal COVID-19 relief dollars designated for health coverage aid. This money is on top of subsidies already provided to some low-income and middle-income Californians through the Affordable Care Act.

Households that already receive some aid could get a couple hundred dollars more in savings in their monthly premiums. Also, people who are currently paying full price for insurance could get about $700 in savings a month, said Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee.

Experts expect this boost in aid to translate into a significant drop in the number of Californians living without health insurance, especially once the word spreads. “This is a huge deal for middle class Californians paying mammoth checks to insurance companies,” Lee told CalMatters. Affordability, he said, is the number one reason people go without health coverage. The new aid, part of the American Rescue Plan, makes subsidies available to many more Californians. Covered California estimates about 2.5 million people will benefit from new and expanded help. That includes about 810,000 currently uninsured people.

Covered California, the state’s insurance marketplace, opened a special enrollment period on April 12th that allows people to sign up and make use of federal COVID-19 relief dollars designated for health coverage aid. Photo Credit: iStock Last year, California became the first state in the nation to offer aid to middle-income residents who made too much to benefit from federal subsidies. The state raised the threshold for aid to incomes at 600% of the poverty level. Lee said about 50,000 more Californians signed up for coverage through the state marketplace when that assistance came online. The new federal subsidies will be bigger than what the state provides and will replace state help. Now “California doesn’t have to write the check,” Lee said. The new federal subsidies will be bigger than what the state provides and will replace state help.

This is a huge deal for middle class Californians paying mammoth checks to insurance companies. -PETER V. LEE, COVERED CALIFORNIA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

For people looking to sign up, their coverage can go into effect as soon as May 1 if they enroll before the end of April. People will be able to sign up for the remainder of the year. This enhanced federal aid, however, does have an expiration date: It will run through the end of 2022. For people already enrolled in a health plan through Covered California, their out-of-pocket share will be automatically adjusted; they should see savings as early as next month. The federal law expands eligibility for federal assistance and sets a maximum for how much of their own money families and individuals can spend on health coverage — 8.5% of their income. For instance, for a household with $70,000 of annual income, the cost of its health insurance would be capped at $5,950 per year. A household earning $200,000 per year wouldn’t have to pay more than $17,000 per year for health insurance. “The American Rescue Plan does limit the subsidy to amounts in excess of 8.5% of household income, so for a millionaire that would be premiums in excess of $85,000 (a year) and American health care is expensive but it’s not that expensive,” Joseph Newhouse, a professor of health policy and management at Harvard University, said during a press call with Covered California. Previously, households with incomes above 400% federal poverty level — about $51,040 for an individual or $104,800 for a family of four — were not eligible for federal assistance. Those families and individuals often buy their health coverage directly from insurers, but now those same people may be able to pocket some of their premium cost if they go through the state exchange.

According to the state Department of Finance, it may be another month or so before the state knows exactly how this will be reflected in the state’s budget. California has embraced the ACA wholeheartedly and has passed several pieces of legislation to enhance the health law. Besides creating its own bucket of subsidies, it also created its own tax penalty when the previous administration eliminated the federal one. Surveys and polls have shown that mandating people to have health insurance through a penalty is unpopular, but Lee and other insurance market experts say it does nudge people to sign up. L.A. Care Health Plan, which serves Los Angeles County, has about 100,000 people enrolled through Covered California. Lower income individuals who are just above the threshold to qualify for Medi-Cal could see their portion of the premium reduced to almost zero, said John Baackes, the CEO of L.A. Care Health Plan. The vast majority of L.A. Care enrollees “were getting a subsidy of some sort, but none had a $0 payment,” Baackes said. During 2020, as many people lost their jobs during the pandemic and with it their employer-sponsored health insurance, more people fled to Covered California and Medi-Cal, the state health insurance program for low-income people. Historically, people drop off Covered California because they gain coverage through a job or become newly eligible for Medi-Cal. Usually, about 10% of those who drop off become uninsured, Lee said. Last year, that number grew — about 25% of those who left Covered California lost coverage completely.

CASI DOS MESES DESPUÉS, LOS PROVEEDORES DE CUIDADO INFANTIL SIGUEN ESPERANDO LOS CHEQUES DE ALIVIO ELIZABETH AGUILERA CalMatters

ALMOST TWO MONTHS LATER, CHILD CARE PROVIDERS STILL WAITING FOR RELIEF CHECKS

D

ELIZABETH AGUILERA CalMatters

Hernandez hired professional sanitizers to come in and deep clean on a regular basis, plus a daily cleaning person to wipe down toys and surfaces between uses and an extra assistant to help with virtual learning. She had to boost her WiFi for the kids who log in to school, transformed a bedroom in her home into a classroom, and bought extra food and supplies. Her utility bills also skyrocketed as she took in kids before sunrise and kept some until after midnight to accommodate parents’ work schedules.

esperate child care providers who look after state-subsidized children are anxiously waiting on a much-needed one-time stipend of $525 per child promised by Gov. Gavin Newsom back in February. The stipends, which could tally in the thousands for some providers, might mean the difference between staying open or turning out the lights.

“When I heard about the stipend I was excited and it’s going to help us but now we are in April and I haven’t seen it,” said Hernandez, who is licensed to care for up to 14 children. “I need the help now.”

So far, child care providers have not gotten a single dollar of that relief. The payment process involves federal money disbursed to California then routed through state agencies to local organizations that will pay providers directly. The state departments of education and social services, which oversee child care programs, are in charge of getting this money distributed. Social Services said in an email that money should be going out this month to local organizations, which then have 30 days to pay providers. The Department of Education said checks to contractors were being mailed April 12 and providers should be paid by those local organizations between April 30th and May 15. “The (Department of Education) understands the importance and urgency of funds to be disbursed to child care providers in a timely manner,” wrote spokesperson Jonathan Mendick in an email. “Stipends are going out to direct contractors (April 12) from the State Controller’s Office, about three weeks after the funds were made available to the department.” Social Services has contracted with the Foundation for California Community Colleges to distribute its portion of the money. “The Foundation is working as quickly as possible to distribute the funds,” department spokesperson Scott Murray wrote in an email. “Most providers should receive their stipend payment by the end of April.” Meanwhile, child care advocates are worried most providers won’t get paid until sometime in May, says Denyne Colburn, CEO of the California Alternative Payment Program Association, a member organization representing dozens of community contractors across California that connect eligible families with child care and facilitate payments. “This is not a nicety, it’s a necessity,” Colburn said. “I know the state is dealing with a multitude of issues but we are talking about reopening the economy and these providers never closed, and those that did close are not reopening, so we should be bending over backward to keep providers stable.” The state has lost more than 8,500 licensed child care sites in the last year and three in ten jobs in child care have been lost during the pandemic. Advocates say the sting from those closures hasn’t truly been felt, but will be when the economy fully reopens and parents start to look for care that is no longer there. That’s why child care providers are so frustrated by the slow process and point to federal stimulus payouts to Americans in need that happened seemingly overnight. For Sylvia Hernandez, who runs Blossom To Success Child Care in Van Nuys out of her home, the stipend will be a lifeline.

“It’s going to help me stay afloat. I don’t have an emergency fund anymore. I used up my savings account and used my credit cards to make ends meet,” she said. “I’m trying here to survive and stay open for my community and it’s getting tougher.”

Hernandez experienced a 65% spike in operating expenses throughout the pandemic to keep her child care open. That included spending nearly $9,000 on cleaning supplies last year and paying $133 a month for upgraded internet.

Newsom promised the stipends on Feb. 23 as part of the state stimulus plan. Every child care provider who had state-subsidized children enrolled in November 2020 will receive $525 per child to help support their operations after a year of increased costs due to sanitizing, social distancing requirements, virtual learning and closures due to COVID-19 exposures. “I don’t have an emergency fund anymore. I used up my savings account and used my credit cards to make ends meet.” SYLVIA HERNANDEZ, PROPRIETOR, BLOSSOM TO SUCCESS CHILD CARE The stipend was part of a preliminary agreement between the state and the newly formed Child Care Providers United union, which is in negotiations with the state over its first labor contract for state-subsidized child care providers. The problem, Colburn said, is it took the state a month for the funds to move to the agencies that oversee child care. From there it’s taken more time for the orders to be processed through the controller’s office or through other channels before checks are set to go out to local contractors on their way to providers like Hernandez. The Education Department is handling the majority of the stipends as it oversees a wide range of child care programs that account for 274,114 children, wrote Mendick, in an email. This week the agency still couldn’t say how many providers will receive stipends. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Services is overseeing $16 million in payments for 28,034 children, according to an email from Murray. As of last week, Colburn said she’s been told by state officials the money would be processed by the state by April 21 and that it would take 10 more days to get paper checks in the mail to the local contractors who will then pay the providers. The state does not do electronic transfer for these payments so local organizations are checking their mailboxes, often for what could be multi-million-dollar paper checks. Then contractors will begin cutting checks to individual providers. “It seems like this whole process should have been set up,” she said. “I don’t understand the more than a month delay. Providers are closing, they are barely hanging on, they are upset.”

But arts education has the power to emotionally and academically rebuild students — and the world around us. I come from an immigrant community, where people routinely shift between English and Spanish in everyday conversation. I also attend the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, a nationally well-regarded public arts high school. While I share many similarities with my friends at home because of our common backgrounds, my high school is a predominantly white institution. Straddling the divide between these two communities was hard, and I molded different versions of myself to exist in each space. Thankfully, I found that art can spread ideas and facilitate cultural exchange. As I grew through my artistic practice, art became a way for me to manifest the society I dreamed of: a place where disparate identities and cultures can coexist with empathy and equality, while nurturing joy and justice. In California, I serve as the student ambassador to a statewide organization, Create CA, working to ensure every student has access to a full arts education. California’s Education Code promises classes in music, dance, theater and visual arts to all students, but even before the pandemic, only 12 percent of secondary schools met that requirement. At the start of this crisis, I saw people in need of a way to heal, and I knew using our imagination was a solution. When I realized I had the tools to aid those around me, I started an online, student-run organization called The Art Hour providing free visual and performing classes for students from the Los Angeles area and beyond. Most students learn about our classes through word of mouth, through social media, or through their school. We give students a platform to express themselves and indulge their imaginations. They make glitter and sparkle costumes inspired by Nick Cave’s “Soundsuits,” act out fantasy worlds to inhabit, and dance with the zeal of prima ballerinas. Teaching young students across the country how to take charge of their own narratives showed me the power the arts hold. Recently, in a class I hosted, I showed students

artwork and posed a question: “What would you like to say to your community?” One student drew a singer that put on an anti-racist, Black Lives Matter concert. The singer was surrounded by phrases like, “Your skin is beautiful” and, “You are loved.” This young girl, who was only 7 years old, used her voice to create an uplifting message for her community. Creating art has made me conscious of how I observe and interact with the world, the same awareness that little girl expressed. This coming fall, I have the privilege to attend one of the nation’s most prestigious universities on a full scholarship. Because of my arts education, I see endless career and academic possibilities in front of me. I want every student to have the same opportunities. In California alone, 1 in 10 jobs is in the arts and culture sector, which doesn’t include the innumerable jobs that rely on creativity — a skill refined with exposure to the arts. What many people don’t realize is that participating in the arts in school opens up opportunities for students beyond the classroom and into their adult lives. As I’ve engaged with the arts more broadly, I’ve seen the art world greet my white, affluent peers with open arms, while I’ve had to claim my own space. Because I’ve pioneered my own path, I’ve had artistic opportunities that seem unfathomable — from my first gallery show at the age of 14, to working with arts museums across the county to create bilingual public programming. While arts education has the power to rebuild our students, we must implement it with equity in mind. We need to give students, especially students of color and those who are low-income, an arts education that reflects, respects and builds upon their culture, language and background. When we recognize that all art and methods of creating are valid, our art becomes the future. Art has the power to heal students’ trauma and rebuild our economy in the wake of the pandemic. Arts education is necessary to rebuild our society and country. We can use art to reshape our society and culture in a way that is more equitable, and in doing so we can rewrite our own legacy. We just need schools to provide our communities with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Students, parents and teachers need to raise their voices by asking their school board members and administrators to ensure every student receives a full and accessible arts education. Arlene Campa, 18, is a senior at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, the 2020-21 Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate, and the founder of The Art Hour, a student-run nonprofit that provides free art classes to students in grades K-12.

L

ANSING, Mich. - Opponents of Michigan's proposed trans sports ban are working to educate people about what they see as its dangers. Senate Bill 218 would prohibit trans high school students from playing on teams associated with their gender identity, verses their sex assigned at birth. A key concern among the bill's supporters is that trans athletes -- particularly those born male who identify as female -- would have a competitive advantage. As a transgender youth in Ann Arbor, Eli Herrmann contended there's no scientific evidence to back up that claim. Herrman, who is co-facilitator of the Michigan Organization on Adolescent and Sexual Health Youth Advisory Council on Transgender Youth, noted that trans youth already feel shunned by the homophobic culture of sports. "Many trans people just don't want to be a part of that," said Herrman. "I don't know any trans people in my school that partake in sports; I'm the only person. So, it is not as if, very suddenly, we're going to see hundreds of trans people." Some argue measures like SB 218 promote women's rights. However, more than two dozen national women's rights and gender-justice organizations publicly support full and equal access in athletics for transgender people. SB 218 has not yet had a committee hearing. Herrmann plays on the boy’s soccer team, and said he thinks sports help validate a young person's identity and skills. He added trans people can't control how they were born, and just want to live their lives, like everyone else. "There is a lot of hate, and sports can be a place for kids to escape," said Herrman. "Taking that away from someone who is young, who might not have a supportive family, might not have a supportive school - that can leave a person in an extremely dark place, and I've seen it before." Advocacy Director at MOASH, Shakti Rambarran, noted the Michigan High School Athletic Association has called the bill "unnecessary." She said she thinks it would create more problems than it would solve.

"Realistically, what this bill is trying to do is invalidate trans youth and their experiences, and perpetuate transphobic stereotypes," said Rambarran. "It is unacceptable and unnecessary." More than four dozen groups signed an opposition letter sent to Sen. Lana Theis - RBrighton - who introduced the bill. It is cosponsored by a dozen other GOP senators. MOASH is joining Neutral Zone in hosting a town hall with legislators and youth to discuss the measure later this month.

La nueva información incluye información de antecedentes, metodología, análisis de impacto y medidas de mitigación. limate change impacts the everyday lives of all citizens around the globe, but certain communities are disproportionately affected. Women, in particular, shoulder a disproportionate burden as they are most reliant on natural resources for their livelihoods but lack the needed resources to properly respond to climate disasters. With women representing over 70 percent of the total global population living in poverty, the United Nations estimates that 80 percent of those displaced by climate change are women. At the very core of female climate change vulnerability is the pervasiveness of patriarchy and gender hierarchies. Throughout history, women have been suppressed in politics, economics and labor, and many are forced to remain in the domestic sphere with the primary duties of raising children. Flooding, drought and other effects of climate change, such as increased heat and air pollution, can disproportionately impact women, particularly pregnant women, causing premature births, stillbirths and other problems. “[The climate crisis] grows out of a patriarchal system that is also entangled with racism, white supremacy and extractive capitalism,” says author and climate activist Katharine K. Wilkinson. And while women may be the most impacted by climate disasters, they have limited opportunities to participate in decision-making processes. Wilkinson, coeditor of a recent book of essays on climate feminism called All We Can Save, adds that the unequal impacts of climate change make it harder to achieve a “gender-equal world.” Despite historical setbacks, climate feminists have made much progress in recent years, with increased female representation in government roles and leadership positions. Today, many of our climate justice leaders are women. Youth activist Greta

Thunberg has captured the attention of global leaders, demanding they take immediate action against climate change. U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez developed and proposed the Green New Deal, pushing the U.S. government a step closer to recognizing the scale of our climate crisis and enacting drastic environmental policy changes. Climate feminists believe women should be leaders in the environmental movement because their experiences with institutional sexism and other inequalities resulting from the way our society is structured engender a deeper commitment to fighting for justice and equality. Additionally, women tend to prioritize making change over being in charge—and recognize the importance of nurturing a sense of community in the broader climate movement. That said, how can we help advance climate feminism? Men in positions of power can certainly change the face of climate leadership by listening to the ideas of women from diverse backgrounds—and stepping back for women to make the decisions and set the vision. Most important, women need more leadership positions in local sustainable management and development in addition to increased representation in the federal government. National climate policies that are gender-responsive can not only bring greater responsiveness to the public’s needs but also help dismantle ethnic or gender divides in the environmental field, pointing toward a more peaceful and sustainable future.

USTIN, Texas -- A 10-day road trip by guncontrol advocates, calling on senators to pass background checks on all gun sales, will end in Washington, D.C. this week.

As part of the "Everytown for Gun Safety" event, volunteers with Texas Students Demand Action and Moms Demand Action gathered at the Texas State Capitol last Friday.

Since the first of April, there have been multiple mass shootings in the U.S. Shannon Watts, founder of the group Moms Demand Action, believes Americans are ready for commonsense gun laws, including last week's proposals from President Joe Biden. "We should be celebrating the reopening of businesses and schools after a long, brutal year of COVID," Watts remarked. "And instead, Americans are wondering if gun violence will also be part of the return to normal." In a Twitter post last week, Gov. Greg Abbott encouraged lawmakers to bring him legislation to sign that would make Texas a "Second Amendment Sanctuary State." Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association, the country's largest gun lobbying group, is hoping a federal judge in Texas will grant it bankruptcy protection, which would allow them to reincorporate as a Texas nonprofit. "Shame on me, shame on other white women and Americans who waited way too long to get involved in this issue," Watts commented. "Black and Brown women have been doing this work for decades with very little visibility." Watts added the group Moms Demand Action now has six million volunteers, and will make 60 stops in 22 states, culminating with a demonstration in the nation's capital Friday.

Y él me respondió “Sí, la he estado viendo”.

Me encanta interpretarla.

Lo tienes en “For All Mankind”. ¿Te gustan los shows sobre política? Lo tienes en “For All Mankind”. ¡Exacto! Si te gustan las piezas temporalis, deberías ver “For All Mankind”. ¡Lo tiene todo!

FOR ALL MANKIND Coral Peña talks about becoming a TV aerospace engineer, “Good Will Hunting”, and unexpectedly becoming a role model to other minorities

know about him until I was in adulthood. And I was wondering, seeing yourself play a space engineer of color and not only that, but a female space engineer, do you feel that the representation aspect is important? You are advancing diversity in a show like this that's a really large ensemble, but that you have that role and kids watching it now can be like “There's a career in engineering and space exploration for people that look like me.”

“For All Mankind” is an Apple TV+ original that centers around a simple question: What if the US lost the space race to the Soviet Union so the pursuit for power in the cosmos continued on past the 70s? In the first season of the riveting show, the rapid advancements in technology and society had NASA colonize the moon and bring in more Women into the space program. In season two, which is now streaming and finalizes with its last episode on April 23rd, it’s been nine years since the first season and the fight for control of the moon and space continues. Aleida Rosales, played by Dominican-American actress Coral Peña, is an engineer tasked with handling the physics of flight in space. Coming from a past full of troubling experiences including crossing the border illegally and losing her mother at a young age, Rosales is very intelligent and can adapt to situations, but also challenges the rules from the space program superiors. Recently I had a chance to speak to Coral Peña about her role in “For All Mankind”, her 1997 movie inspiration which helped flesh out her interpretation of Aleida, and why more than just space fans will be captivated by the show’s mix of alternate history, Sci-Fi, and drama. To start off, could you tell me a little bit about Aleida’s story and how she fits into the overall narrative of "For All Mankind"? Although it is my first season with the show Aleida was actually in the first season. She's in fact, I think the very first character we’re introduced to in the first season and the younger years [were] played by an amazing actress named Olivia Trujillo. She did a beautiful job. And so the exciting part about the fact that I get to play the older version of Aleida is the fact that Olivia plays Aleida very different than I do. And that is something that I was afforded because there is a ten-year time jump and because Aleida, somewhere between season one and season two, has been through so much and has had such a difficult life. Clearly, we don't exactly know why yet, but we do know that she's had a very difficult life and in the second season [it] is exciting to watch a very different version of Aleida who is extremely brilliant. She's an amazing engineer, but who, because of her trauma, doesn't know how to work with people and doesn't know how to work with authority figures and with people that she just hasn't doesn't know how to trust yet. So that's Aleida, she's a very special character. I love playing her. I know that people get an even clearer idea of who Aleida is as we finish off the season. Besides looking at the initial performance of the younger version of Aleida, how did you mold the character to your style or, your

own performance, and did you have any other inspirations which helped you in that? Yes. So, I got very lucky that the whole point was that Aleida must have had this 180-degree transition between season one and season two. So, at first I was trying to mimic a lot of what Olivia Trujillo did in the first season, but after speaking to [creator] Ron Moore and the show runners and Maril Davis, who produced the show, I realized that the most exciting thing I could do was create a completely different character. So, I had a lot of freedom and I got to just think about what it would be like for someone to, you know, we leave her in the first season, and we see that her father has been deported and she's virtually homeless. And what is it like to play a character who at such a young age has been through that much immigration trauma? So there's that end of things, and then in terms of my inspiration, I feel like I'm going to keep bringing it up - and it's so cheesy - but the perfect example of a troubled genius that we see and that we have is in "Good Will Hunting", we see Will Hunting whose this mega genius, but has gone through so much trauma, and that was the movie when I was a kid that I loved so much! And so, I drew a lot of inspiration from that as well. What is it like to be someone who everyone knows is the most talented and everyone is rooting for them but can't help but self-sabotage and self-sabotage. That movie definitely was a bit of my inspiration for [Aleida]. I was reminded a little bit about José Hernández who is a retired MexicanAmerican astronaut, and I personally didn't

Yeah, I think when I'm working on something I oftentimes don't focus on or don't know how to focus on how other people could receive it. I'm just focusing on what's here now. And so when we were working on the second season, I didn't think about, 'oh, this could be really impactful for young Latin girls who want to be engineers.' But then, as the show has started to come out and more and more episodes have come out this season, I was on set one day with Michael Okuda, who is the Technical Advisor on set for a lot of these ‘space things’. And I went up to him, (we're filming season three right now), during the middle of filming and I said, 'Hey Michael, how do you like the second season have you been watching it?' And he said, 'yes I've been watching it.' And then it got quiet, and I saw him starting to get teary eyed and he said, 'I just want to let you know that personally, this character means a lot to me. I relate to Aleida a lot. And even though I'm older now, even now, the representation and her presence in the show, it makes me feel like I can do anything.' And I started to get teary eyed as well! So I thought, ‘oh, my God, I didn't even think about how far of a reach something like this could have.’ So now I think since having that conversation with him, I've been thinking about what it means for a young girl who wants to be an engineer, to see it, to see themselves and say, 'oh my gosh, yeah, I'm allowed to do this, I'm allowed to do this. And now I've been given permission,' which is crazy. They they've always had permission. But sometimes you just have to see yourself to know that you have permission to do whatever you want. I can't even begin to unpack what it means to be that person that can offer that to someone. Thank you for that great answer. On another note, I did wonder about space things. I was wondering how you might have physically prepared for this. Was there a lot of like sort of like astronaut training, physical training etc.? Well, Aleida's stuff is on Earth. So, most of my preparation has been just it's like space travel 101, you know, trying to just catch myself up with how engineers have to think, you know, how does a space engineer have to think when they see an astronaut, when they see the moon, when they see a shuttle? What is their first thought? Unlike an astronaut who is coming from maybe the Air Force or Annapolis, as Ed Baldwin (played by Joel Kinnaman) was, they're just thinking, how can I fly this thing? And what

are the physics to fly? Well, I'm thinking, okay, what are the physics of how many people can I have on this ship? What's the weight going to be like? What type of engines do I have to consider using, what's the force and impact that I have to take into consideration? I mean, it's just a different mindset that you have as an engineer versus someone who's coming from a flying background. So that was the preparation I did just kind of listening to interviews of how engineers just talk about space. And although there's only probably like .01 percent of it I actually understand, it's just about opening my brain up to the possibilities of thought that an engineer has. Thanks again Coral. My last question is why would you recommend people get on Apple TV+ if they haven't seen "For All Mankind" and catch up as the second season is coming out, with the final premiering on the 23rd of April? Like I said, when I'm working on a project, I never think about exactly how people will receive it. But as the season has come out, I've been delighted and just in shock at how many people are, I guess, in love with this show. I mean, I am someone who, I read a lot of GQ and recently GQ published an article where they said, 'you need to stop sleeping on "For All Mankind."' And I go, ‘oh, my gosh, people are not just in love with this show, people are fighting for this show. People are begging for people to watch it because it is it is that exciting of the show.’ It is doing something very special, which is these time jumps in the ultimate history and it combines these interpersonal stories with politics, with space. It is exciting and it juggles all these things at the same time. And it's doing something that I don't know has ever been done with the structure of the show. I usually say, well, if you like space, if you like Sci-Fi, if you like alternate history, you should watch the show. But I think the show has been able to do so much more than that. So, I guess I'll just say, listen to Rolling Stone, listen to GQ, listen to Vanity Fair, and watch the show, because it's great and this season is fantastic. So like come for the space, but stay for the other things it does. Stay for everything else. I mean, pick, what do you like in TV? Do you like the family drama, well you get it in "For All Mankind". Do you like shows about politics, well you get it in "For All Mankind". It does have everything. And it's crazy that they've been able to not only make it work, but to make it exciting. Yeah. I like eighties period pieces, so I think that's what I'll stay for. Exactly! If you like period pieces well, you should watch "For All Mankind". It has everything!
